A rare and harsh gem of a film, Mi Vida Loca tells the story of young Hispanic women in Los Angeles and the struggles they have in a life of gangs, drugs, and personal betrayal. Mousie (Seidy Lopez) and Sad Girl (Angel Aviles) are best friends from childhood, growing up in gang-infested Echo Park and remaining loyal to each other. But when Sad Girl sleeps with Mousie's boyfriend (a drug dealer who is killed) and becomes pregnant, their friendship is ruptured. As the violence of their neighborhood erupts around them, they must try to stay together as friends despite their betrayals. This is an unforgiving look at a world where women seem to have no choice but to raise their children, deal drugs, and survive by whatever means necessary. Director Allison Anders (Gas Food Lodging) structures the film as a series of unflinching and vivid anecdotes, bringing insight to a tragic side of modern society. --Robert Lane

4 out of 5 stars ORALE!! IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT THE BOYS NO MORE!!.......2007-09-02

this movie is an A man strait up. it's one of the best representing the life of the poor homegirls from the barrio. it could have been better, but those were the ways, and that's how things were in those times in the streets. two homitas down for life, then they get jumped in, then damn here comes a vato. messes it all up. here comes betrayal, hardships, and parenting. you got to run the streets and do your thing at home. it's hard in a place like that, and even harder to get out. that's the way of the world you got to do what you must to survive. just goes to show how men come and go. sometimes you got to let it go and grow up for your kids sake, and move on. head up, fight for yours, and don't let no one get you down, even if you have to go at it alone. you know. great movie, chicks all thugged out, makeups down too, great job. do recommend.

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC! CAGNEY & BOGART?...........AND THERE'S MORE?.......2007-07-07

This has been a favorite of mine for many years. I wish they would released "Crime School" on DVD! What is the problem?? The whole cast is great in this tale of two childhood friends who take two very different paths as the result of a dumb idea and one of the boys getting caught by the police. They just don't make them like this anymore! No wonder today's youths of the world have no character! I know, I don't want to see who's running this world in 50 years! The DVD boost a nice transfer and some cool extras. This is also available in a Gansters box set(well worth it!)If you haven't seen this film, your missing the best of the best! Bring "Crime School" to DVD please!

5 out of 5 stars Another great James Cagney movie.......2007-05-29

This is a superb movie. James Cagney was awesome. Dead end kids are all dead now, I think. Very good old time movie. It actually had a moral to it's story. Today's filmakers and actors should take note.

5 out of 5 stars Great Nostalgia!.......2007-04-16

I purchased this movie for my husband, who collects antique radios. We merely wanted to see the bar-radio. We enjoy all things Art Deco and vintage, particularly 20-40's. We realized that we were really enjoying the movie! It's a bit sappy, but weren't all movies from the era?

5 out of 5 stars A very New York movie .......2007-04-08

(To Kristopher Haines) you asked "What did audiences see in these kids?" Many kids in the northern cities saw themselves, or knew of wise guy tough kids just like the Dead End Kids. They also knew or knew of a 'Father Connelly' who would try and set neighbourhood tough kids on the right path in life.

If you were a New Yorker you might have been similar to one of the kids depicted in this film yourself. In 1938 many actors & actresses in motion pictures were from New York, thus Hollywood made movies with the New York viewing audiences in mind. That's why the movie going public liked their antics.

After the war when the East End Kids evolved into the The Bowery Boys their fan base grew even larger. Today they have a substantial following amongst old movie fans, and yes many of these fans are from the Tri-State area (NY/CONN/NJ), Philly, Boston, Providence, Chicago etc, since those fans related to the Boys growing up, or watching their re-runs on TV.

5 out of 5 stars "Whaddaya Hear, Whaddaya Say?".......2007-03-14

Rocky Sullivan (James Cagney) was always a troublesome kid, but what do you expect from a guy who grew up in the slums? The only difference between him and the man who became the preacher (Pat O'Brien) is that Rocky got caught stealing and the preacher didn't. So Rocky went to juvenile detention and graduated to the slammer thanks to his ties to bigshot gangsters. He agreed to take the fall for them at the advice of his lawyer (Humphrey Bogart) at the promise that he'd jump right back in with them when he got out. What a sucker he was.

When Rocky gets out, he finds that his old friends have turned on him and used up his money. He doesn't take lightly to that and uses his intelligence to outsmart them time after time. In the meantime, upon returning home, Rocky meets up with some childhood friends including the preacher and a girl he used to pick on (Ann Sheridan). He also meets the new town hoodlums (The Dead End Kids) and becomes their idol. However, Rocky's life was never destined for a happy ending.

This film is incredibly powerful because it comments on so many modern issues. Is the criminal a victim of his own free-will or of his environment? And in being a criminal, does that make him all bad? Also, the relationships between the characters are great because they're so well established. Cagney is perfect in the role, a street-wise, easy-going guy you can't help but love despite his imperfections. Also notable are the Dead End Kids, especially Leo Gorcey whose strong personality and looks are very similar to Cagney's.

This is an excellent film that transcends the gangster genre.

This tedious remake of the classic Christmas movie The Bishop's Wife falls on its face by significantly altering the careful design of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert E. Sherwood's story for the original film. In Sherwood's version, a rather wooden, inept bishop and his lonely wife unknowingly take into their lives a heaven-sent angel who aids the former and ends up falling in love with the latter. In this unnecessary update, an inner-city preacher (Courtney B. Vance) and his estranged spouse (Whitney Houston) are visited by a celestial goof (Denzel Washington), whose unsolicited offer of help is enough to galvanize Vance's character to fix his own problems. What that means is this: by the second act, there's no reason to have Washington's angel in the story. Even his infatuation with the missus isn't enough to warrant his hanging around this movie; the change is a colossal blunder by director Penny Marshall. Vance ends up stealing the film from Washington, but it's a Pyrrhic victory; for the most part this movie just seems like a series of random scenes between opportunities for Houston to belt out songs. --Tom Keogh

Description

Starring Academy Award(R)-winner Denzel Washington (Best Actor, TRAINING DAY, 2001; Best Supporting Actor, GLORY, 1989; REMEMBER THE TITANS, THE HURRICANE) and multi-talented Whitney Houston (THE BODYGUARD, WAITING TO EXHALE), here's a delightful romantic comedy to send spirits soaring! Washington plays a charming angel named Dudley who's sent to earth to help a young minister (Courtney B. Vance -- DANGEROUS MINDS) and his beautiful wife (Houston) revive their marriage! But things take a hilarious twist when Dudley accidentally falls in love with the preacher's wife. From director Penny Marshall (RIDING IN CARS WITH BOYS, A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN) and featuring screen favorite Gregory Hines (RENAISSANCE MAN), this critically acclaimed comedy hit also showcases nine dynamic songs by Grammy Award(R) winner Houston, including the Top 10 hit "I Believe In You And Me."

4 out of 5 stars The booth? She showed you the booth? lol!.......2007-08-26

I liked it. But I like most Christmas themed movies. With Courtney B Vance and Denzel Washington in it how bad can it be? Whitney Houston couldn't act her way out of a paper sack, but she has a beautiful singing voice which added a lot to the movie. But Jenifer Lewis absolutely stole the show! I'm such a huge fan of hers. What bugs about the story line is that while Henry's got the weight of the world on his shoulders, and is single handily trying to hold the entire community together, all Julia can do is complain that she's not getting enough attention. While Henry is trying to get an innocent boy released from jail and trying to save the church the best way he knows how, without any help from Julia. She's off ice skating with Dudley. Going off to sing at Jazzies with Dudley. Having lunch with Dudley and getting her finger poked by a tree, with Dudley. Seems to be she could have been more of a help to her husband.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Mother's Day Gift.......2007-06-13

I sent this to my mother as apart of her mothers day gift...she loves this movie and I couldn't find it anywhere. It arrived in excellent condition just as ordered! :o) Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars The Preacher's Wife.......2007-02-06

It was excellent! It should be a classic. I don't know why it's not played more around the Christmas holiday!

5 out of 5 stars A Hallelujah Good Time.......2006-06-30

Whitney and Denzel make a phenomenal team. The soundtrack makes the movie all the more wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars A new holiday classic!.......2005-12-14

Ever since I saw this film in theaters with my family in 1996, I knew this film would become an annual holiday tradition and it has. It's amazing to think how far Whitney has fallen since her role as the singing Preacher's wife, but I do consider this to be the best role she has played on screen (surpassing "The Bodyguard", "Waiting to Exhale", and "Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella"). It was a role tailor made for her, as she did start her singing career in church and always wanted to make a Gospel album.

The cast is also magnificent, as I love the lady who plays Whitney's mother with her sassy comments ("don't talk about your behind, I gave you that behind!"; "I'm not one to pry..."), the Preacher's somewhat flustered secretary ("first he took the picture, then he took the car and moved to Cleveland", "Please Santa, put that man under my tree...if he can fit!"), Courtney Vance as the Preacher who's lost his spark, the boy who plays the son and narrates the film, and of course Denzel Washington as the angel who comes to offer help. Gregory Hines plays the villain role, and Lionel Ritchie has a cameo as Whitney's old flame. And cameo of cameos, Whitney's own mother Cissy plays a member of the choir.

My favorite scene coincides with my favorite song on the film's soundtrack: "My Heart is Calling" when Whitney and Denzel go ice skating while Courtney is stuck in traffic and growing frustrated. That song should've been a single, but whatever genius decided to release the melancholy "I Believe In You and Me" probably killed a great opportunity to ignite Whitney's career at the time. As I remember, this film didn't do well at the box office and the soundtrack didn't fly off shelves. Had they chosen "My Heart is Calling" (one of Whitney's best songs ever), it might have had a different outcome. Oh well...the film remains as a must see holiday classic that I never get tired of.

A year ago, I finally watched the original "The Bishop's Wife" and I must say that they definitely improved upon the original. To call "The Preacher's Wife" a remake is somehow missing the picture. They are completely different in style and I prefer the musical and modern "Preacher's Wife" over the 1950s/1960s film. "The Preacher's Wife" just makes you feel good when its all over, it's a rare family film that doesn't have any embarassing moments and one that the whole family can watch and enjoy together. Don't miss it!

Fly with the U.S. Navy's elite Blue Angels demonstration squadron in the breathtaking video The Magic of Flight, which explains the basic principles of what enables airplanes (and birds) to fly, what creates lift, how planes maneuver, how planes land again. Going back to the Wright Brothers' experiments at Kitty Hawk, the documentary explores how the intrepid bicycle makers ruminated on the elements of flight for many an hour before even attempting to assemble their first aircraft. The Blue Angels put into action the discoveries made by the Wright Brothers, as they make their selections, train, and perform.

Pilots push their high-performance fighter planes through difficult but graceful maneuvers for amazed air-show audiences, demonstrating where the state of the art really lies for 21st-century flying. For all the skills of the pilots, however, the most astonishing part of the video would have to be the camera work, with cameras mounted on the planes' bellies, noses, and cockpits to give an up-close view of what the machines are really capable of. Planes fly arm's length apart during maneuvers where the slightest misstep would mean certain catastrophe. The Magic of Flight does indeed go a long way toward capturing the wonder of flying, with spectacular camera work, editing, and production. --Jerry Renshaw

Im a pilot myself. This video is awesome. I loved showing it on my Aquos.

4 out of 5 stars Great Flying Scenes.......2007-07-12

A bit too much sidetracking into history for a knowledgeable aviation buff, which cut up the marvelous flying scenes. The history was better for a novice - but the photography of the Blues demos were well worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars Great viewing for the whiole Family especially on a Home Theater PC.......2007-03-17

Great viewing for the whiole Family especially on a Home Theater PC and HDTV. This is HD at its best!!! educational and fun. A Classic.

3 out of 5 stars it is okay..........2007-02-23

This should have been named "The Magic of Flight with the Blue Angels". Unfortuately it is mostly about the Blue Angels, and not as much about flight in general and the magic of flying. I do think the Blue Angels are fun to watch, so this movie is still pretty good, but it did not do much for my love of flying. The reason I say this is because I was hoping for something that was more in touch with my love for flying, which is smaller aircraft, not fighter jets. Another good title for this movie would be "the Blue Angels and the Air Show". Unless this is what you want to see, look for another movie.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome look into the history of flight, carrier flight and the Blue Angels!.......2007-02-17

This film is both a visual and an historical masterpiece!

MoF takes you through the history of flight; from the Wright Brothers' first flight, to harrier jump jets, F-18 aircraft carrier landings/takeoffs, and the Blue Angels' rigorous training program!

Along the way, you are introduced to the basic theory of flight with impressive computer animations that illustrate how we were able to manipulate the wings of a plane in comparison to that of birds to create lift and control it.

The flight footage is absolutely stunning with no visual-effects. This film takes full advantage of IMAX, bringing you up-close and personal to the action.

I cannot find one thing negative to say about this film. It is an absolute MUST for your collection!

Sergio Corbucci's Immortal Classic - Now Restored From The Original Negative!

Franco Nero stars as the lone stranger who roams the West dragging a coffin filled with chaos towards a destiny ruled by vengeance. Co-writer/director Sergio Corbucci (THE GREAT SILENCE, COMPANEROS) packs his landmark classic with indelible images, unforgettable performances and some of the most shocking brutality of any `Spaghetti Western' ever made. This is the still-controversial epic that defined a genre, launched a phenomenon and inspired over 50 unofficial sequels. This is the one and only DJANGO!

This definitive edition of DJANGO has been re-mastered from the original camera negative, recently discovered in a Rome vault untouched for over three decades. Also included for the first time is the optional Italian audio track featuring Franco Nero's own voice. Following two years of extensive restoration, Blue Underground is no proud to present the most stunning and complete version of DJANGO you will ever see.

5 out of 5 stars One of the all time great spaghetti westerns.......2007-07-15

Sergio Corbucci's Django is a definite example of a spaghetti western classic. Our mysterious protagonist Django(Franco Nero) arrives to this lonely town. He drags a coffin behind him. We still don't know what's in the coffin. That's one of the mysteries of the character. We still don't know what are his motives. You just constantly ask, who is that guy ?
There are some great performances , great action ,and some pretty cool surprises in this picture. It's shot pretty well . There's alot of hand held camera used during the action sequences. You feel like your there almost , like you fall with the characters. I love that . I also recommend The HellBenders, Companeros, The Great Silence , and anything else
Corbucci you can find. 9/10

Description

Henninger Productions presents Blue Angels: A Year In The Life, a four part series that follows the lives of the Navy's elite flight demonstration team, from starting as "newbies," to the end of the air show season, all shot in High Definition video. Each year as new pilots are selected, they must endure a long and arduous process of training, studying, and team building, taking pilots to their physical and mental limits. But it is all worth it the day they are "crested" and recite the Angels' creed, knowing soon they will take off to perform the most extreme and exhilarating air performance in the world.
Each episode follows the team as it prepares for its upcoming Summer 2004 season. We watch as nervous new applicants wait to hear whether they have made the team, and see the heartbreak of those who did not. We jump into the cockpit with the team as they spend the winter constantly practicing the awe-inspiring tricks that will dazzle audiences. And we follow them through show season and witness the aerobatic stunts they have worked so long and hard to perfect, ending the series as the new batch of recruits join the team.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best doco's on the blue angels.......2007-07-19

The documentary has a slick, fast action packed look about it. The behind the scenes about the training, display sequence and selecting new pilots is second to none. There is even a look at the hard working and often over looked maintenance team.

5 out of 5 stars The Blues really deliver..........2007-07-01

I did not know what to expect from this video. It was great! The most heart-wrenching was Major Dan Shipley having to leave for medical reasons. The flying sequences were amazing, although I noted some editing missteps. Also, Blue Angel #6, Craig Olson, was a Lt. (Part 1, Becoming Blue) not a Lcdr. He was not promoted to Lcdr until the 2005 Season. ( He is currently back on the team as #6. )

I enjoyed seeing the friendships develop and really got a kick out of the way the Blues welcome new team members.

I highly recommend this video.

5 out of 5 stars Great Documentary!.......2007-04-27

I have brought this together with the following:

Fighter Pilot - Operation Red Flag (IMAX)
American Fighter Pilot DVD
The Magic of Flight (IMAX) (2-Disc WMVHD Edition)

I think the Blue Angels: A Year In the Life came on top of my list. It has surprisingly good quality and value. Very interesting story of their year round trip. Great video quality and much longer play time then The Magic of Flight. Hints: get this instead of The Magic of Flight if you are into Blue Angel stuff.

The story tells about the Blue Angels history, their structure including all the frontline and backstage crews. The doc starts with their winter training, then it goes with the ups and downs during their round year airshow and recruitment when near the end of season. All with great detailed and video quality is crisp top-notch.

Oh BTW, I heard that there was an accident in Beaufort that a Blue Angel pilot was killed in action. I wish his family the very best and the pilot RIP.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent look at the best.......2007-03-15

This collection is a must have for anyone interested in the Blue Angels or really, any precision demonstration flying team. The team is sharp and well trained and the video shows a lot about how they get that way.

5 out of 5 stars Best of The Best.......2006-11-10

Having seen this series on the Military Channel I knew what I was getting. A comprehensive look at the Blues in selection, training, preparation, and performing. Truly the Blues are greater than the sum of their parts. Highly recommended.

Although I thoroughly enjoy the music on Pavarotti & Friends For War Child, I could not play the CD as purchased on either of my CD players because it was in a 5.1 format. A friend copied it onto a disc I can play.
I feel that CD's purchased through your company should be in formats able to be used be the masses, instead of a select few that are able to have state-of-the-art machinery.
Other than that, I am extremely happy with your service (I was a first-time buyer), and with the CD as a whole. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars An all-star presentation of life and survival!.......1999-07-12

Pavarotti and Friends for War Child is the second but not the last, of Pavarotti's efforts to make visible that which we would prefer to ignore. From his opening prayer of Holy Mother, he pleads for compassion. Eric Clapton's blues-trained voice melds effortlessly and makes us also want redemption and grace. Interestingly placed on the same theme is Joan Osborne's St Teresa. Joan sings of looking from the depths of desolation to a possible savior. Euro-pop tunes featured are poignant studies in our humanity and most are worth our listening. Pavorotti's collection ends with Live Like Horses-- Elton John's tribute to the life of Versace. He asks that we kick down our fences and move on! to live free and noble as does our equine friend. Thank you Pavarotti. Your wisdom and far-reaching voice beacons and then gently educates us. Our lives-- as the War Child's, WILL continue and evolve.

Amazon.com essential video

For director Josef von Sternberg and Marlene Dietrich it all began with The Blue Angel, one of the masterpieces of Germany's Weimar cinema. This landmark film thrust the sultry and unrestrained Dietrich on an unsuspecting international film audience. She plays the prototypical role of Lola, the singer who tempts repressed professor Emil Jannings (the king of expressionist actors) into complete submission night after night at the Blue Angel nightclub. The film perfectly captures the masochism and degradation of the Weimar Republic, just before the rise of Adolf Hitler. And yet the moral confusion exhibited by Jannings is really due to his own torment. Dietrich is merely an instrument of his innermost desires, standing on stage in top hat, stockings, and bare thighs singing "Falling in Love Again." --Bill Desowitz

Description

The crowning achievement of the Weimar cinema, The Blue Angel is an exquisite parable of one man's fall from respectability, presented in both the newly-restored German and English-language versions.
Emil Jannings, the quintessential German expressionist actor, stars as Professor Rath, the sexually-repressed instructor of a boys' prep school. After learning of the pupils' infatuation with French postcards depicting a local nightclub songstress, he decides to personally investigate the source of such indecency. But as soon as he enters the shadowy Blue Angel nightclub and steals one glimpse of the smoldering Lola-Lola (Marlene Dietrich), commanding the stage in a top hat, stockings and bare thighs, Rath's self-righteous piety is crushed. He finds himself fatefully seduced by the throaty voice of the vulgar siren, singing, "Falling in Love Again." Consumed by desire and tormented by his rigid propriety, Professor Rath allows himself to be dragged down a path of personal degradation. Lola's unrestrained sexuality was a revelation to turn-of-the-decade moviegoers, thrusting Dietrich to the forefront of the sultry international leading ladies, such as Greta Garbor, who were challenging the limits of screen sexuality.

5 out of 5 stars The Blue Angel.......2007-09-04

I recently had the good fortune of seeing this classic movie in the German version on screen at the National Gallery of Art where it was shown in conjunction with an exhibit: "Foto:Modernity in Central Europe, 1918-1945". The film was an appropriate companion to the show. It shows the conflict between two ways of life: the first characterized by authority, high culture, and sexual repression, and the second characterized by sexual openness, informality, and popular culture, primarily jazz.

"The Blue Angel" dates from 1930 and features, famously, a young Marlena Dietrich whose performance as the nightclub singer Lola Lola radiates sex. In the film Dietrich sings a song called in English "Falling in Love Again" which became her signature piece. Emil Jannings also gives a stellar performance as Lola Lola's suitor, Professor Immanuel Rath.

The movie is based upon a novel by Heinrich Mann who also assisted in writing the screenplay. The story has many resemblances to the short novel of Heinrich's brother Thomas, "Death in Venice" as it explores the conflict between repressed respectability and sexuality. The movie tells the story of an German professor of English, an aging, very fastidious bachelor named Rath, who visits a club called the "Blue Angel" out of concern that his charges are spending their evenings there to the detriment of their studies. Rat quickly becomes enamored with Lola Lola. The movie tells of the relationship between Professor Rath and Lola Lola and how it leads to his deterioration and destruction.

There are many humorous moments in the film as the incongruous relationship takes its course. The movie rapidly picks up tempo to work to its sad conclusion. Professor Rath's emotional degeneration is marked by the physical changes that appear as the film progressed. From a well-dressed, punctual and rigidly authoritarian teacher, he becomes late, poorly dressed, embarassing to himself and others, and in sore need of a shave. When he realizes how he has lost himself through his love of Lola Lola, it is too late.

The raw sexuality of Marlena Dietrich remains the great visceral attraction of this movie. But in its story of the perils of neglecting and repressing one's sexuality with the attendant cost of falling headwise into the opposite extreme, "The Blue Angel" tells a story both distinctively modern and timeless.

5 out of 5 stars Von Sternberg's The Blue Angel.......2007-06-21

Von Sternberg's breakthrough vehicle for Marlene Dietrich was a smoldering drama in the Weimar era, and still packs some heat now (especially in the superior German version). While veteran Emil Jannings hams it up a bit, Dietrich is mesmerizing. She appears a shade darker and plumper than in later roles, since she'd yet to receive the Hollywood treatment, but a luminescent star quality shines through. Lola's rendition of what would become Dietrich's signature song, "Falling In Love Again," is a highlight. A piercing study of obsessive love.

5 out of 5 stars Suprisingly good quality DVD for one of the best 30's German flicks........2007-05-12

Deitrich's first and best, Sternberg's best. Jennings second best, after Greed. One of the first sound German movies. If all this arouses your interest...I strongly advise you to not hesitate and add to your library this DVD. Excellent: cinematography, editing, casting, costumes, sets and screenplay. The Deitrich screen test is a terrific bonus, really. The quality of the DVD is one of an excellent restoration. You get two DVD's. I never watched the second, the dubbed version for America. This is the one included in the "Famous Stars Collection" DVD, and it is pale in comparison to the German version.
Hey, maybe more extras on the second DVD. I should look, but as long as I have the Blue Angel to watch once a year, I am happy.... and you will be also.

5 out of 5 stars DVD of Blue Angel.......2007-03-08

A classic film from the 1930's in both English and the original German language, with subtitles.

By modern standards the plot may seem a little tame but the film is a vivid insight into the era of pre war Germany.

The quality may seem poor and the production techniques limited but again, this enhances the film's ability to portray life is it was some 70 years ago in a mid European country.

Those familiar with the original Isle of Wight DVD/VHS release will be pleasantly surprised by Blue Wild Angel. For one thing, the soundtrack has been remixed in both stereo and 5.1 surround. Hendrix's legendary Isle of Wight show may have been notoriously riddled with technical difficulties, but in all honesty, it is one of his better live recordings, and Eddie Kramer's remix sounds superb. Next, Blue Wild Angel includes many songs missing from the original release such as "Lover Man," "Foxey Lady," "Message to Love," "Ezy Rider," and "Purple Haze." By far the highlights of the performance are the mesmerizing, newly unedited versions of "Red House" and "Machine Gun." Finally, as an added bonus, the concert is introduced by a mini documentary about Hendrix's involvement with the Isle of Wight festival. This introduction is told through new interviews with Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox, and Eddie Kramer and footage from Murray Lerner's Message to Love: The Isle of Wight Festival rockumentary. Blue Wild Angel is a great addition to any Hendrix fan's collection. --Rob Bracco

5 out of 5 stars Honest Portrayal of a Guitar Genius.......2007-08-23

This movie is an honest glimpse into what it is to be Jimi Hendrix on stage. It's not just clips of the performace edited together; it is a rolling scene of the performance. The line-up, including Billy Cox on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums, is perhaps the most inspired line-up that Jimi performed with! The direction and production is straight-forward and a true attempt at an objective view of the show.

5 out of 5 stars Well done documentation of a flawed performance.......2007-07-23

The video is great. ANY Hendrix fan (and I am definitely one) ought to own this. It is a very well done video, in terms of camera, not too much bio material, just a good recording of a sub-par performance.
I don't know what other folks are seeing here, but if you read about Hendrix, he was apprehensive, he was thin, dead tired, and there were also technical glitches. Hendrix' performance at Berkeley (BREATHTAKINGLY soulful) and other are so superior to this performance.
I am a guitarist, and know the frustration he was obviously feeling (I've even done the sigh, like he does about a third of the way through...he was just not happy with his playing himself that night) and look at how much time he is running to the side of stage, trying to tell them things to fix. Everything was going wrong for him that night. From the start, he didn't want to be closing band (but Jethro Tull beat him out of being second from last), power problems...he had to wait to go on til they could sort that out, then just as he was going to go on, he ripped the seat of his costume...which anyway had sleeves that got in the way of playing. Then his sound onstage...it was NOT what he wanted. The feedback was not controlled...not coming when he wanted it, and WAS feeding back when he didn't want, pedals flipping over, queues missed... lackluster (some of them) solos...it was frustrating as can be for him.
So I don't know how so many others are missing this. He has to ruch lyrics, makes false starts at some, forgets lyrics, The strat goes out of tuning right off, and never quite gets back, and the flying V also.
and I love Hendrix. He was fantastic, and he does have his moments. He was definitely throughout ALMOST getting there...but he had so many unfortunate things going on, it was a huge effort. I think that's what he meant about 2/3rds of the way through when he mentiond "I just woke up", I think it was his state of mine, yes, but also that he just started getting "locked in", getting things grooving. It picks up at the end, and even in the beginning there are ALWAYS moments where he is brilliant...even here. Any Hendrix Fan ought to have this performance, and this is the best DVD to own of it. Just, you ought to know going in, it doesn't have the soulful moments...the amazing extended sidetrips like Berkely, or Band of Gypsys. He really doesn't look well here, and Mitch Mitchell tries to help out, being given several drum solos, trying to give Hendrix a breather so he can gather his strength and make a new stab.

Simply put, the performance never gels, never quite gets off the ground. Not for want of effort, just...the gods were not with him that day. I don't think he was inspired, but at teh same time he DID manage to keep going..playing a full set. And there are definitely moments here too, as I think probably in ALL Hendrix performances. At one point the camera for some reason focuses on a guy in the audience who at that moment is into what Hendrix is doing (because it IS good) and while playing...it is like the air goes out of the solo, and you can read it on this guys face too.

I get tired from it, it is frustrating.

1 out of 5 stars Historically significant...not a good performance.......2007-06-30

First of all look at the cover...It's in red and black and says 'Blue Wild Angel'? How lame is that? If you research the rest of this tour most of the shows were considered bad. Jimi just did'nt care at this point in time. That being said, there are some good moments(though no great ones imo). The show seems to start well and end well but is hit and miss in the middle. Jimi did'nt want to be there and it shows. However they do play for a long time...Jimi is visibly tired and stoned...and out of tune most of the time...this DVD is for die hard fans and collectors...made me sad to watch actually...Jimi deserves better and this should not have been released...just because you can does'nt mean you should...

3 out of 5 stars Half Bad.......2007-05-30

The first half of this performance is horrible due to equipment problems. The second half of the performance is great. It's worth buying for the second half of the performance. Too bad they did All Along the Watchtower during the first half of the performance.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best-filmed Hendrix concerts, even if not one of his best.......2007-04-09

This concert is a must have for Hendrix fans for all the reasons listed by others below, plus it comes with the whole concert on 2 CDs, even the 3 songs not on the DVD (Hey Baby, Hey Joe and Midnight Lightning, the latter is mistakenly listed on the box as being on the DVD but isn't), which was a nice surprise. The film quality is great, almost the whole concert is shown, unlike the horrible edited versions of the past, and the concert is not as bad as some might say, although many greater ones have been preserved on tape. On some songs he's distracted by equipment problems, but on others you really can see Hendrix at his best. It's just an uneven concert really, but worth having nonetheless. My only complaint is that this DVD is 'PCFriendly', and so unlike every other DVD in my collection, wouldn't play on my PC as I only had 4 GB free on my hard disk. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a 'PCUnfriendly' version that simply plays by popping it into your disk drive, so I would suggest anyone without a DVD player and a full hard disk take into consideration that you won't be able to watch this DVD. However, still 5 stars for a great release.

Jesus "Jess" Franco is a director that's sort of a secret amongst serious horror film fans. If you're the type of casual fan of the genre who thinks that "Friday the 13th," "Halloween," and "A Nightmare on Elm Street" are the best films the horror industry ever made, you have never heard of Jess Franco. If you think the "Leprechaun" franchise constitutes the apogee of the horror genre, you have never heard of Jess Franco. If you think collecting Wes Craven and John Carpenter films are as far as you need to go to balance out your DVD collection, you have never heard of Jess Franco. I don't mean to give the impression that Franco is the best directorial talent ever seen in the field, because he definitely isn't, but I have found that knowledge about some of this man's films is one of the best ways to distinguish the novices from the veterans. His most highly regarded--at least in some quarters--film remains "Vampyros Lesbos," a fascinating take on the age-old vampire legend. Then there is Franco's take on the Marquis de Sade's Justine, which doesn't exactly classify as a horror film as much as it does your typical Eurosleaze trash. Read on...

"Justine" (let's just call it that instead of putting de Sade's name in front of it; I'm feeling lazy tonight) stars Romina Power as the titular character, a young, naïve waif cast out into the decadent world of 18th century France. It all starts when Justine and her dissolute sister Juliette (Maria Rohm) must fend for themselves after being thrown out of an orphanage. The two head straight for Paris and a local harridan hotel where Juliette fits right in as the main attraction. Justine doesn't make the cut, however, and heads out into the world to find her own niche. What follows is a series of slightly bawdy and often boring romps involving all levels of French society. Justine first obtains employment at a small inn thanks to the grizzled owner Du Harpin (Akim Tamiroff!) only to find herself back on the street after rebuffing the overtures of a seedy nobleman. She then ends up in prison where she meets a tough, streetwise goon by the name of Madame Dusbois (Mercedes McCambridge!!) who has a date with the executioner she's planning on skipping. In between the woman's enormously hammy cackling, we learn that she needs Justine's help to escape her fate. They get away, and Justine falls in briefly with Dusbois's gang of ugly French thugs.

All is not lost, however, as Justine manages to escape from these vagabonds only to fall into a dismal situation involving the Marquise de Bressac (Slyva Koseina) and her good for nothing hubby. A murder plot and a lot of inherited wealth leads to a situation in which Justine decides to do the "right" thing by spilling the beans to the clueless Marquise. Oops. Hubby still gets what he wants but learns in the process that Justine's big mouth might have ruined his plans. Result? A big 'M' (for murderess) branded on Justine's chest in what is probably the film's best sleazy scene. What follows is rather tame by comparison, although I should mention none other than Jack Palance shows up as Antonin, the head loony of some crazed sect of debauched nut jobs. The film screeches to a halt as Justine, her morality in tatters and on her last leg emotionally and physically, somehow manages to find a personal savior who could care less about her soiled reputation. At least I think that's what happened. Oh, I almost forgot: none other than Klaus Kinski turns up as the Marquis de Sade himself, but doesn't do much except pace about in a prison cell and write down Justine's various adventures.

"Justine" is one of Franco's better efforts even though it ultimately disappoints in the sleaze department. The budget is bigger, the stars are recognizable and surprising to see in a Jess Franco film, and the musical score sounds wonderful. What went wrong? A lot. Considering the Marquis de Sade is one of history's most lecherous individuals, the movie is strictly for the milk and cookies crowd. Sure, a few whippings and some gratuitous nudity pop up from time to time, but such scenes are generally uninspired and tame compared to the stuff you'll experience in the Marquis's writings. Even more alarming are the performances. Akim Tamiroff in a Jess Franco film? Wow! Quite a drop from "Touch of Evil" to this, wouldn't you say? Mercedes McCambridge also should have known better; she's awful and grating in her part. As for Jack Palance, well, if you've seen "The Shape of Things to Come" you have a good idea of how far Jackie will go to prop up his faltering career. He lurches and screeches through his part jacked up on wine (according to the interview with Franco on the disc) and generally embarrasses himself at every opportunity. Still, despite all its flaws, I liked "Justine" for the mere fact that it's a quite watchable bad movie. I love bad movies.

Extras on the disc include the aforementioned interview with Franco, one of the better ones I've seen, in which he discusses working with Kinski (they got along) to dealing with Palance's penchant for drink to his extreme dislike of Romina Power. A trailer, poster and still galleries, and a Franco bio also find their way into the supplements section. If you're looking for a truly disturbing and sleazy cinematic adaptation of de Sade, I recommend Pasolini's "Salo." Those looking for a gigglefest and de Sade lite would do well to give this one a spin.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre at its best.......2005-01-22

The first thing that struck me about this DVD was the very poor opening sequence, featuring Klaus Kinski in the role of the infamous Marquis. Yes, this movie will soon be 40 years old, but still, the technique is amateurish and uninteresting.

As for the rest of the movie, it fails to capture the novel's spirit. De Sade's characters are satyrical due to their extreme, impossible cruelty and depravation. Franco's are silly, whimsical, and they fail miserably to amuse or arouse me at all.

Power is indeed a sweet-looking, beautiful young girl, but a limited actress, and the rest of the cast is just plain dull. Except for Palance, who delivers a rather strange performance that, once again, betrays the spirit of the book.

In short, the movie is a big disappointment. While De Sade's novel was a harsh criticism of the morals of his time (which greatly benefited him), the movie, with its happy ending, is a rather short soap opera where the heroine endures some tribulations, but gets her reward in the end.

4 out of 5 stars Innocence in trouble.......2004-09-15

Romina Power as Justine is lovely innocense to look at, and I enjoyed what otherwise is a trite sadistic movie just to see her charms.
