A comedy with serious intentions, Man of the Year attempts to challenge the audience's notions of what is and isn't real when it comes to politics. Tom Dobbs (Robin Williams) is a popular political talk show host. As a lark, he runs for president and wins. The thing is, he's not any more unqualified than the other candidates, so his victory doesn't seem quite so outrageous. But when it turns out that the computer ballot firm responsible for tallying all the votes may have had a glitch--and that a recount would negate his win--mayhem ensues and the film segues from comedy, to drama, and back to comedy (sort of) again. Directed by Barry Levinson (Diner, Wag the Dog), the film doesn't take advantage of Williams' natural humor or charm. He at times appears to be chomping at the bit to unleash a comedic tirade or two, only to be held back by stiff lines. Williams only truly appears to be enjoying himself when trading lines with Laura Linney, who portrays the hapless do-gooder at the ballot firm who's being set up to appear unreliable. With some fine performances by a supporting cast that includes Jeff Goldblum, Lewis Black, and the inimitable Christopher Walken, Man of the Year occasionally hints at greatness. But at best, it's a lukewarm comedy with a diluted message. --Jae-Ha Kim
Customer Reviews:
Great Cast-Average Movie.......2007-09-02
Man of the Year was a bit of a disappointment considering the make-up of the cast, Robin Williams, Christopher Walken, Laura Linney, and Jeff Goldblum among others, though by no means is it a terrible movie.
A comedian, often critical of Capitol Hill and politics, decides to run for President and gets voted in office in a surprise electoral victory carrying all 13 states in which his name is on the ballot.
The plot has elements of both comedy and drama making it rather difficult to label it as one or the other; it's actually a bit of both.
In short, the acting is good, the plot is average, while the humor could have been a lot better.
One thing was rather curious and that was how a specific small religious/ethnic group was mentioned throughout the movie for no apparent reason whatsoever except to promote it and possibly get the audience exposed to it and/or used to it... Hmmm...
In a nutshell, it's probably not a movie you would want to add to your collection, but it might provide for an evening's entertainment, and that's about it.
No masterpiece here... 2.5 Stars
Funny Movie but unrealistic.......2007-08-25
Robin Williams has always been a fan favorite and his humor and stand-up in this film is excellent. When the movie moves to Ellen the programmer, it gets really unrealistic. She's attacked and given drugs, which are psych drugs that flip her out so that she appears unbelievable. She does not get that she was attacked, apparently. She doesn't tell Williams' character that something happened with the election program. She still doesn't get developed, a bit too flipped out. The comedy drains in the second half with the movie plodding along. If there was a problem with the election program, would you go to the CEO directly? Would you have a half a brain to go to the media with this news once you were attacked by your own company?
Unrealistic second half. Too bad, as this started out great.
OK IT'S PREDICTABLE!.....SO WHAT? .......2007-08-18
I think some people expect every movie to be the greatest film ever made! This comedy/drama could have been better, yes it's true! It was still an entertaining movie, even though I could see most of the twist coming a mile away! Would I buy it.....No! It was an OK movie to watch because I had nothing better to do. No problem. Williams and the cast do what they can with the script. It did have some good points and it was an interesting premise. Maybe we need someone like this in office because we haven't had any winners in there in a long time!
Surprise.......2007-08-13
This movie is like meeting a really hot woman at a club, having a good time, bringing her to your place, making out and then finding out that she's a man.
False advertising. Don't buy into it.
Underrated Surprise.......2007-08-12
This movie really is an underrated surprise. I think this is because it's a bit of a mixed genre film. Not all comedy and not all drama.
Comedy is well used to poke fun and the modern political environment with the mix and match candidates. Pick a party, you know what the platform is going to be, so does it really matter who the candidate is?
This is where the fluke of Williams' winning comes into play. You want him to win, he does, but not for the right reason. Then doing the right thing comes into play. Yes, morality rears its ugly head.
Good prevails!
This comedrama explores current politics with tight, well thought out storytelling that gives one moments to ponder just how absurd the contemporary American political landscape is.

Vincent Price gives an atypically restrained performance as the sole survivor of a worldwide plague that revives its victims as bloodthirsty vampires. During the day, he canvasses his abandoned hometown, tracking down and stalking his former friends and neighbors, always making sure to return before nightfall, when the dead rise to assault his fortified house. Hope arrives in the form of an apparently normal young woman (Franca Bettoia), but her agenda proves to be even more sinister than that of the vampires.
Based on the 1954 novel by coscripter Matheson (whose displeasure with the final product spurred the use of a pseudonym), this Italian-made production is best known for its influence on George Romero's Night of the Living Dead. The similarities between the two films go beyond the presence of shuffling zombies and housebound heroes; both feature taboo-breaking scenes of interfamilial murder, and both end on bleak, dystopian notes. While The Last Man on Earth lacks the political and darkly satirical shadings (and graphic gore) that make Night of the Living Dead a more memorable experience, the combination of Bava-esque Gothic atmosphere and bleak, documentary-style camerawork by directors Ragona and Salkow (the brother of Price's agent Lester Salkow) lend themselves to moments of pure frisson that compare laudably to Romero's film. Matheson's novel also provided the source material for the awkward 1971 Charlton Heston vehicle The Omega Man. A planned third version, helmed by Ridley Scott and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, was shut down in its earliest stages due to skyrocketing budget costs. --Paul Gaita

Cult Film Of "Legend".......2007-08-10
THE LAST MAN ON EARTH is one of those end-of-the-world sagas that posits the notion of what it would be like to live in a largely dead world after some ghastly war or plague with nobody else left. The twist here, taking its basis from Richard Matheson's classic 1954 novel "I Am Legend", is that you do have one human protagonist left alive, and a world full of things that want to kill him.
Vincent Price stars as Robert Morgan (though he is Robert Neville in both the book and the latter film THE OMEGA MAN [and the soon-to-be-released third version with Will Smith, under the author's original title]), the only survivor of a terrible plague that decimated Earth, and turned everyone into vampires. By day, Price goes out into the city to stake and burn as many vampires as he can. And at night, he must barricade himself against the hordes that prowl around his isolated fortress each night, including his ex-friend Ben Cortman (Giacomo Rossi-Stuart), wanting to get at him. Price tries to find a logical and scientific explanation for the vampire plague (explained in flashbacks to when the plague began); and in due time, he happens upon another survivor, a woman (Franca Bettoia) who seems to be normal. But there is a fairly diabolical twist that Bettoia turns out to have in store, for both Price and the vampires.
Often seen as a precursor to George Romero's 1968 horror classic NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, and Danny Boyle's more recent 28 DAYS LATER, THE LAST MAN ON EARTH, though very flawed in many aspects due to its rather low budget and its being filmed in Rome (Matheson's original novel is set in post-plague Los Angeles, as is THE OMEGA MAN), does have an extremely high creepiness factor that is very difficult for a lot of horror/sci-fi hybrids to come by, especially today. Price may not have necessarily been the ideal one to play Robert Morgan (one of the many reasons Matheson disavowed the film and used his pen name Logan Swanson for the screenplay credits), but he does a fairly good job all the same. The direction of Sidney Salkow and Ubaldo Ragona is fairly perfunctory for the most part, but certain scenes do stand out, including Price being caught outdoors at dusk after visiting his wife's grave; and Price having to see his wife come back from the dead as a vampire.
Matheson's novel remains one of the high points of both horror and science fiction literature (and without much doubt the greatest vampire story since "Dracula"), and ironically it has proven to be a fairly tough one to adapt and still fit Hollywood (THE OMEGA MAN differed wildly from the letter of the novel but retained the basic spirit of it; how the Will Smith version will fare is yet to be determined). But if one ignores the inherent flaws of this near-Poverty Row production, THE LAST MAN ON EARTH can easily be seen as a fairly good cult film of "legend."
Panic in the Year Zero / The Last Man on Earth (Midnite Movies).......2007-08-04
I've bought many of the MGM "Midnite Movies" titles in the past few months and they ALL have satisfied! Speaking just of the technical aspects, they have all been clean transfers. They have little extras that they could get away with not having (Theatrical trailers, occasional interviews) that I'd like to see more of. All in all, a good product.
Last Man on Earth, one of the greatest horror movies ever.......2007-07-21
Before Romero and Night of the Living Dead there was the Last Man on Earth. There are no zombies in this movie, they are vampires, but they movie slow and are pretty much the same thing you'll see in Night of the Living Dead. This is a true classic. A great post apocalypse movie. This is definately Vincent Price's greatest movie. Nobody could have played Nevilles part better. I cannot comment on this specific dvd version of it, as I have never seen it. However, there are enough comments on amazon to tell you that this is probably the most high quality transfer of this movie available. And its in the letterbox format. It will be nice to see the movie the way it was intended to be seen. I would love to see a colorized version!
One good, one OK.......2007-06-14
"Panic in the Year Zero" is an outstanding movie. It is as timely today as it was when made. "The Last Man on Earth" is OK and Vincent Price carries the day. It did show its European production style with a lot of fits and starts and no smoothness in continuity.
Buy the set for "Panic in the Year Zero" which is thought-provoking and a good survival primer. Watch "The Last Man on Earth" on a rainy day.
Great stuff.......2007-05-26
I remember seeing Panic when I was just a little (like maybe eight or nine years old) kid. It was on TV and I thought it was great. Having watched it now, as an adult and having grown up during the Cold War, I see just how great it really was. In a sense, it was visionary in its portrayal of society's reaction to a nuclear attack. Miland's performance was incredible as were the other actors in the film. Add to that fact that Miland also directed this film and I believe it truly shows the man's talents and genius. Yes, there was a level of nostalgia for me as I watched it, but the film points to some very significant issues that I feel we all need to address.
I have not yet watched Last Man but will do so soon.

Biodiesel & UV Light.......2007-09-17
I was one among the group of folks, peripherally, who were documented here. All I can say is that this documentary is a) an accurate reflection of the weird folks who do this weird thing, b) an accurate depiction of the sometimes dificult issues that erupt when chatotic groups try to attempt big things, and c) a whole tank of nitrous full of giggles.
Feels Like Home!.......2007-01-30
Of all the years I've been to Burningman, it's been hard to explain the experience to those who haven't. Journey to the Flames is the ideal documentary to help me with this mission! It takes you on a real ride of the true Burningman journey through the storylines of everyday people who create their own "playa" characters as they begin to explore themselves in such an extreme and playful environment.
This is a great DVD to give to friends and family who have wondered about what happens during those crazy 10 days- as well as a fun reminder to those who have gone... what a strange crazy trip it is.
convinced me to go.......2006-11-29
this was the most accessible, informational, and fun/quirky doc i've seen on burning man. it's a hard topic to explain and this movie does such a good job of showing the many facets of the event. it had a memorable blend of fun & entertainment with good information that convinced me to finally take the plundge and go to the festival after years of hearing about it. it has great music, goofy & real characters, incredible visuals of the event, strong background info, and the bonus features were amazing - especially the sky divers plunging into the temporary city of 40,000 people. totally recommend it.
Journeying for a Burning.......2006-11-29
This documentary follows a group of close friends as they explore radical self-expression at the Burning Man festival at Black Rock City, Nevada. Great music and camera work set this Burning Man documentary apart from others that have been released. This one is filled with excitement and adventure as well as some hysterical moments -- those guys Jake and Steve are simply looney! If you have ever been, are thinking about going, or are just curious about Burning Man, this is a great place to start.

Umberto D. is one of the enduring masterpieces of Italian neorealism, considered by many to be one of the greatest films ever made. Everything that neorealism represents can be found in this simple, heartbreaking story of an aged Roman named Umberto (played by Carlo Battisti, non-professional actor and retired college professor) who struggles to survive in a city plagued by passive disregard for the post-World War II plight of the elderly. With his little dog, Flike, as his only companion, Umberto faces imminent eviction, and his insufficient pension and failed attempts to raise money lead him to contemplate suicide... if he can find a home for Flike. His dilemma--and director Vittorio De Sica's compassionate, unsentimental handling of it--results in a film of uncompromising grace and authenticity. Like De Sica's earlier masterpieces Shoeshine and The Bicycle Thief, Umberto D. earns its teardrops honestly; if this timeless classic doesn't make you smile and cry, you'd better check for a pulse. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Shot on location with a cast of nonprofessional actors, Vittorio De Sica's neorealist masterpiece follows Umberto D., an elderly pensioner, as he struggles to make ends meet during Italy's postwar economic boom. Alone except for his dog, Flike, Umberto strives to maintain his dignity while trying to survive in a city where traditional human kindness seems to have lost out to the forces of modernization. Umberto's simple quest to fulfill the most fundamental human needsfood, shelter, companionshipis one of the most heartbreaking stories ever filmed and an essential classic of world cinema.

Umberto D........2007-06-27
Portraying the plight of the elderly dispossessed in an acknowledged masterpiece of the neorealist style, De Sica's "Umberto D." may surpass his own "Bicycle Thief" for heartbreaking poignancy. What in less skillful hands could have been treacly melodrama becomes instead a wrenchingly honest tale about a forgotten human being searching in vain for some shred of human kindness. Half a century later, "Umberto D." remains a monumental achievement of simple, eloquent storytelling.
A masterpiece of neorealism.......2007-06-20
Having seen the film I read a bit about it. The Criterion Collection provides a booklet with an excellent review by Stuart Klawans and a bit of an interview with director Vittorio De Sica. What I learned was that Umberto D. was a big flop at the box office in Italy primarily because the Italian government didn't like the film because they thought it was insulting since it made Italy seem so unfeeling, poverty-stricken, and mercantile. I was struck by this because, yes, poor Umberto and his dog are pretty much set out to pasture without so much as some grass and a bone. But to say that such a film reflects upon an entire people is perhaps to protest too much.
Italy was devastated by the failure of fascism and was just beginning to recover from the war when this film was made, and nobody wanted any downers. Vittorio De Sica's film is perhaps not so much of a downer as the early critics thought. The ending is ambiguous and while not hopeful for Umberto, is somewhat inspiring in the youthfulness of his dog and in the sweet humanity of the maid Maria who shoulders her situation with alacrity while showing affection and kindness toward a bitter old man.
I was not moved to tears as some have been in watching this. Umberto's troubles seem to me (from my privileged vantage point in time and place) somewhat of his own doing. I imagined that he supported the fascists, and I saw his poverty in his old age as a direct result of that support. Barring that, I imagined that he had planned poorly for his old age, and at any rate his values, represented by his always wearing a suit and tie and hat, and his inability to beg or to take some kind of job, disqualified him for tears. Of course I was unfair.
Even so my sympathy was with him, and I respected the decision he finally makes--although whether he will be able to carry it out is unclear. I respect his dignity, and identify with him in his struggle with the Teutonic and utterly bourgeois landlord who holds sway over him, played with a deliberately heavy presence by Lina Gennari, whom De Sica photographs up close and low to her large body to emphasize her strength and to make it clear to us that Umberto has no chance in his struggle with her.
Both Carlo Battisti who played Umberto and Maria Pia Casilio who played Maria, were considered amateur actors, very much in keeping with the neorealistic school of film; yet for me they were both excellent and natural, whereas Gennari, who was a professional, seemed artificial. But that impression is an artifact of the neorealist school (which they say died with this film). The very fact of no flourishes and no modeling and certainly no flights of creativity by the actors, it was believed, helped to make the film realistic, about real people in real situations.
Today of course this is a celebrated film, considered one of De Sica's best. He himself believed from the very beginning that it was one of his best even though he knew it would be hard-pressed to make any money for its producers.
A word about the dog (the other professional actor in the film). Flike is extraordinarily well-trained, so much so he becomes part of the psychology of the film and is at the very heart of the denouement. The scene near the end where Umberto dips under the rail guard as the train approaches, Flike held close to his chest--and the scene after--is of one of the great sequences in cinema, and, ironically, as in a commercial film, stars a dog! Umberto D. is in fact one of the greatest dog films ever made. All dog lovers will appreciate the love that Umberto feels for his dog and the love that is returned AND the gutty realism that the dog displays.
The DVD includes a documentary about De Sica that I didn't have a chance to view, excellent subtitles, and a video interview with Maria Pia Casilio.
I would almost say, see this for the dog, but do see this for Vittorio De Sica, one of cinema's greats, here at his best, and for Cesare Zavattini who wrote the compelling script.
A Masterpiece.......2007-02-12
Umberto D is a masterpiece of neo-realism with many interwoven stories, not just that of poor Umberto. It's also a story of urban life, ageing, poverty, young people and pretension in Italy in the 1950s. A tear jerker for both women and men.
"Give up the man from Florence.".......2006-11-25
"Umberto D." is Vittorio De Sica's neorealistic examination of one elderly man's struggle to survive. Watching it will make you realize just how indifferent society can be to individual suffering.
Umberto Domenico Ferrari (Carlo Battisti) is a desperate man who barely gets by on his small government pension. He lives in an apartment with his pet dog, Flike, but is facing eviction due to his inability to keep up with the rent. Umberto finds a sympathetic ear in Maria (Maria-Pia Casilio), the maid in his apartment complex, but he knows there is not much she can do to help him. With his money running out and only his loyal dog at his side, Umberto desperately tries to find a way to hold onto what little dignity he has left.
De Sica is determined to show just how depressing real life can be in "Umberto D." There is no joy and very little hope present in this stark and unforgiving film. Battisti is absolutely riveting as the retiree who is one step away from the abyss. Yet despite its uncanny ability to recreate the ebb and flow of real life, "Umberto D." is not very interesting to watch. Viewing this film is the equivalent of sitting on a street corner and watching the people around you do things. This might be interesting initially but eventually boredom will start to set in. "Umberto D." produces the exact same reaction. Initially, Umberto's plight holds you attention but one can watch only so many scenes emphasizing how desperate he is before you tune out. In the final tally, "Umberto D." is a prime example of how good filmmaking technique does not always result in the production of a good film.
Umberto and Flike.......2006-11-11
I had no real idea what sort of movie "Umberto D." was until I saw it the other night. It struck me as a movie that focussed on the eternal challenge of Hope vs. Despair. We get the idea right from the opening scene that this is about an elderly pensioner whose fixed income is way behind the inflated Lire. His is a shared dilemna but there doesn't seem to be too much sympathy out there. He is determined that he will not be evicted from his apartment and spends his hours plotting, pawning, and pleading. Along the way, we come to know Umberto, his landlady, the housemaid, and a number of other characters including his dog Flike. Eventually, the problems come to a head. Umberto has made his decision and is prepared to implement it but one minor problem arises. In the end, Umberto's battle between Hope and Despair finds its' winner.
I found myself thinking of the movie "Harry and Tonto" as I was watching "Umberto D." I'm not sure why I share that here because "Umberto D." is clearly the superior movie. I remember my cousin trying to describe "Harry and Tonto". All she could say was it was about an old man and a cat that go on a trip. Some may come away from "Umberto D." with a similar conclusion.
The greatness of "Umberto D." is in its'direction. The acting is good but it is the director who puts everything together in a way that leaves us feeling that we have been invited to share, for a few days, the private life of a private man. It is that intimacy that makes us glad we were able watch this movie. In Umberto's challenges, we come across people who don't care, people who do care and people who'd like to care but they have more pressing things to. In our appreciation of Umberto's plight, we are given our our challenge to figure out which category of caring describes us. The reality, we come to understand, is that, at varying points in time, all three fit.

I bought this and was disappointed. It's got the original sketch's put to a cartoon, with sound effects put to it.
Mel Brooks at His Best.......2006-08-18
My son was performing in a show this summer and he was looking for examples of a particular cultural accent for one of the show's songs. I immediately thought of the amazing Mel Brooks, and I started looking for a DVD of The 2000 Year Old Man, which I thought was perfect for what he was searching for. I found it at Amazon, briefly looked at the various editions, and quickly picked the one I purchased. It arrived almost overnight, and I occasionally stopped by my son's room to watch the DVD, and enjoy his reaction to this timeless comedy piece. We were surpised and delighted to see that I had chosen the animated version, and I found it added a wonderful new dimension to the original recording I had heard as a young girl. My son thoroughly enjoyed it, and learned a great deal from it. It also gave him a new appreciation of the genius of Mel Brooks, and, thanks to the DVD, he performed the song brilliantly -- he actually exceeded my expectations, if that's indeed possible. I would wholeheartedly recommend The 2000 Year Old Man as an example of brilliant timeless comedy at its best.
2000 Year Old Man.......2006-08-12
Fun to see again and to share with a new generation.
'Old very very old'.......2006-05-12
The 'Two- Thousand Year Old Man' record was one of the funniest comic recordings of all time. My high- school friends and I listened to it over and over again. We would go into uncontrollable wild laughter over it , laughter which ended in total exhaustion and a sense of emptiness. I at the time had a very uneasy feeling about 'laughing so much' in this way.
Reiner asks Brooks, the two- thousand year old man how old he feels and Brooks says 'Old very very old'. Their conversation in which Reiner is the straight- man interviewer and Brooks has ninety- percent of the funny lines is a crazily inventive and unpredictable one. One reviewer has quoted a line from it, " A lion is eating my forearm, will somebody call a cop?' This line gives the real spirit of it. Brooks had a bit of a Yiddishy accent and his asides and banter add laughter to the laughter.
The record is better than the DVD simply because it leaves more to the imagination.
Older Than You Think.......2006-03-16
I did not realize how old the sound-track of this made-for-television animation was until Carl Reiner, as the interviewer, set the scene, saying, "A plane landed at Idlewild." The sound track was probably taken from the record released in 1961. President JFK was still alive; his family had no compelling need to name things after him. So, the airport was still Idlewild, not Kennedy.
According to sources who have asked to remain nameless, since naming them would give away their real ages, Mel Brooks, the 2000 Year Old Man himself, and Carl Reiner performed this little interview throughout the 1950s, but never recorded it. I seem to remember reading somewhere, perhaps in The New Yorker Magazine, that the first recording took place at Reiner's home, sometime in the late 1950s. After dinner, Reiner turned on the tape recorder, walked the microphone over to Brooks - a dear friend and guest - and set the scene. Then he asked the first question...
I had the impression that the challenge was a new one for Brooks, but if my sources are correct, and they did predict that there would be no weapons of mass destruction, Brooks and Reiner had been through the routine many times before that fateful night.
Now, I have to ask, was that tape transcribed onto the record, or did the duo do it again for vinyl? I don't know, but I suspect they recorded it a few times. The reason is in the details. In the review that appeared in The New York Times in 1975, when the animation on this video was first broadcast on the CBS television network, there is a quote: "I have 25,000 children...and not one of them ever writes!" In the video the quote is "I have 42,000 children ... and does even one of them ever come over to visit?"
So, perhaps by the time Media Home Entertainment picked up the animation and marketed the version I have, in 1984, some things changed. Who knows? Both versions of the joke are funny, unless you are sitting at home, in the dark, waiting for your kids to call or come over, in which case neither version is funny.
But seriously, "Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you don't look where you are going, and fall in a hole, and die." Now, that's funny.

violence begets violence.......2007-02-01
At the beginning of this film Maiquel could never imagine killing a person; by the end of the film he could not not kill. The film consists largely of Maiquel's grotesque transformation. He first killed an acquaintance in a fit of rage after being taunted for dying his hair blond. Wracked with guilt and fear, he was shocked to find that the Rio locals thanked him for his vigilante justice and for "keeping trash off the street." A dentist then employs him to take revenge for raping his daughter. Before it's over Maiquel murders his own girl friend, has an album full of newspaper clippings about the people he killed, a thriving "protection" agency, a massive mansion, and more money than he could spend. Along the way he refuses every exit ramp that might have led him down a better path: marriage, the birth of his daughter, the prick of conscience, the Christian conversion of his second girl friend, and a close brush with the otherwise corrupt police. At one point he even vowed, "I want to change and become a normal person." But it was not to be. Clearly, violence begat more violence.
A Touching Nuance.......2006-09-13
Although "City of God", "City of Men" and some other Amadu-linked movies steadily provide a grotesque picture of Brazil, impressions of movie originated from a different no hands-on acquaintance soil and environment have been of a very personal approximation.
Maybe, because of language differences the only most bankable and acclaimed non-W. European masterpieces reach a broad English-speaking auditorium, viewer's amusement for actors performing and a sex-drugs-murdering scenes balance is hardly of any wondering already.
Professional killer's pet piglet in a movie is a touching nuance might be comprehended as a hidden hint on a way of the leaving where a human life in exchange for teeth fixing initiates less emotions than a birthday meal.
I think it is a good film.
Neighborhood Hero from the Most Unlikely of Circumstances.......2006-08-03
Murilo Benicio has again demonstrated an amazing range of acting ability in this most outstanding film. He plays a young man named Miqual Jorge who has no apparent direction in life, no visible means of support, and who lives in a lower class neighborhood in Rio De Janeiro. However, with one unusual change in his appearance, having dyed his hair blonde, he achieved a change in his personality, one which created a destiny he never imagined for himself ... which sealed his fate. This one event helped him act on a dare and find a new bravado that became his persona. He engaged in behavior which under most circumstances is criminal but which for him won a new life, respect and fame. It also complicated his future in ways he never imagined ... Although the subject of the film is somewhat shocking, the viewer becomes sympathetic to Miqual as one understands how his rather simple life turns into a nightmare from which he can not escape. He becomes powerless to change direction once forces are set into motion. He becomes a victim of the circumstances he created just by one or two decisions.
After his hair color changed, he got into a physical relationship with the attractive hairdresser, Cledir. He took her to his Uncle's corner bar, where a neighborhood thief and bully mocked his dyed hair and made innuendoes about being gay and looking like a gringo. On a spur of the moment decision, Miqual Jorge challenged the young man to settle the score that night. Miqual obtained a gun, waited a long time for his opponent and dared him to fight. His opponent kept walking with his girlfriend and even mocked, what are you going to do, shoot me ... which Miqual did. Word got out, that Miqual eliminated the scumbag who stole from hard working shopkeepers and from innocent pedestrians. When Miqual went to the local dentist, Dr. Caravallo, the dentist suggested Miqual do a contract killing of another low life, one who had raped his daughter. Several wealthy businessmen helped create a business, complete with an office and telephone answering machine, where Miqual's skills were for hire. All this met with the implicit approval of the local police whose hands were often tied by laws which protected the rights of criminals.
Cledir became pregnant as Miqual found a new direction for his life. Initially, he was reluctant to marry but then after meeting her mother, he committed to settling down, having a normal job and raising a family, even going to church. Miqual had inherited the responsiblity to provide a home, food, and clothing to Erica, the 15 year old girlfriend of the man he had killed. She lived in his former bachelor's apartment, after Cledir and he had married. Unfortunately, Miqual succombed to temptation and had an affair with her. She was young and demanding, wanted him to get rid of his wife. Sadly, an unexpected accident caused Cledir to die - they had to cover up her death, to make it look like a disappearance. This worked fine until her body was discovered buried in the backyard of one of Miqual's assistant's who worked with him in his contract murder job. Erica and he lived an upper middle class lifestyle until this event unraveled their cosy existence. She confessed to knowing about neighborhood murders to an Evangelical minister, her guilty conscience was washed free as she found solace in religion, but at the same time, this information threatened to destroy Miqual and his newly created lifestyle. Miqual was forced to act - again digging himself deeper into the quagmire from which there is no return ... This film is a fascinating study of how a few decisions can lock a directionless young man into a life of crime from which there is no escape. Murilo Benicio never ceases to amaze with his wide-range of acting ability. Erika Borsos (pepper flower)
A Quietly Disturbing Character Study Made with Style.......2006-05-07
Murilo Benecio is a young Brazilian actor who just keeps turning out fine, solid and very different character roles. As the leading character is this well made film by director Jose Henrique Fonseca from a script written by his father Rubem Fonseca in turn based on the novel 'O Matador' by Patricia Melo, Benecio molds a memorable portrait of a man of low self esteem who is strangely and inadvertently raised to the level of hero in the most bizarre of circumstances.
The setting is Rio de Janiero and Maiquel is a loner looking for an identity. On a bet he decides to have his dark hair bleached by the beautiful beautician Cledir (Claudia Abreu) and finds that as he steps back into his world he is the object of notice. After a cruel teasing by thug Suel (Wagner Moura) he buys a gun and almost unwittingly kills Suel who dies in the arms of his girlfriend Erica (Natalia Lage). Despite Maiquel's fears of his arrest he finds that the neighborhood rewards him for ridding them of a criminal and Maiquel becomes a hero. Not only is he rewarded with gifts (including a pet pig he names Bill after watching Bill Clinton's visit to Brazil on TV!), he is also given free dental work by Dr. Carvalho (Jorge Doria) in exchange for agreeing to kill an enemy of the dentist. More and more people ask Maiquel to whack bad people making Maiguel's new blond persona a hit man and man of the year. How he ultimately begins to spiral downward when his life is complicated by a marriage and family and holding a regular job forces him to initiate his own choices of violence and return to his original hair color to alter his destiny!
If the story sounds odd, it is really a depiction of life in the city of Rio where the police are impotent to control the violence that prevails. Maiquel becomes the Robin Hood/Batman type who brings a degree of safety to his community. Wisely Benecio holds our attention and our compassion as he performs his many murders, creating a man in whom we can believe and applaud despite the grim things he does.
The cast is uniformly fine and the cinematography by Breno Silveira and the musical score by Dado Villa-Lobos (an important guitar player, relation to composer Heitor Villa-Lobos unknown!) is classy. This is yet another fine film from Brazil, in Portuguese, and one that deserves wide attention - especially for Murilo Benecio's superb performance. Recommended. Grady Harp, May 06
Great Film.......2005-07-19
This film never made it into american theaters (besides a few festivals where it won awards) but it is an outstandingly brash film, and gorgeous to look at. My only criticism might be the ending being a little disappointing, but the lead up is well worth it.

You wouldn't think a movie that's mostly two old guys talking could be a thriller, but that's exactly what Man on the Train is. French singer Johnny Hallyday plays a professional criminal who comes to a small town to take part in a robbery. By chance, he meets talkative Jean Rochefort (The Hairdresser's Husband), who invites the laconic Hallyday to stay at his house because the hotel is closed. The two form an unlikely friendship, each curious about (and envious of) the other's life. But all the while plans for the robbery continue, while Rochefort is preparing for a dangerous event of his own. The pitch-perfect performances make Man on the Train completely involving. Rochefort and Hallyday play off of each other beautifully; it's impossible to put your finger on what makes these subtle, supple scenes so magnetic. Directed with spare authority by Patrice Leconte (Ridicule). --Bret Fetzer
Description
Patrice Leconte's (Girl on the Bridge) MAN ON THE TRAIN tells the touching story of two men from different walks of life as they develop an unexpected friendship and change each other's view of life at the last possible moment. Milan (Hallyday), a thief, steps off the train in a small town in the French Alps where he plans to rob a local bank. By chance, after he is unable to find a room for the night, he encounters Manesquier (Rochefort), a retired poetry teacher whose sedentary lifestyle bores even himself. Sharing nothing in common except important plans for the weekend - one is to rob a bank and the other is to go in for open-heart surgery - the two men begin talking and soon develop a respect for one another, as well as a secret longing to live the type of lifestyle the other lives. And, as the friendship grows even stronger, each man defies his personality to explore his yearning for the life of the other.
Customer Reviews:
"You watch too many thrillers.".......2007-08-19
L'Homme du Train is one of Patrice Leconte's best films, playing nicely to his strengths and never outstaying its welcome thanks to a tight running time. An arthouse success outside France but a disappointment in its home territory, it's a wistful look at life's disappointments and missed opportunities seen through the unlikely friendship of Johnny Hallyday's ageing bank robber checking out a small town bank and Jean Rochefort's retired schoolteacher who watches too many thrillers as each man sees in the other the life they could have lived had they only had the courage to try. The former monosyllabic and increasingly cautious, the latter unguardedly talkative, this odd couple make an engagingly credible friends, united by their own rapidly approaching dates with their respective fates.
In many ways its almost a small-scale modern-day Gallic working of Hugo Fregonese's melancholy 1954 Civil War Western The Raid, which saw Van Heflin's Confederate tempted to settle in the town he has come to destroy given a French thriller makeover, even retaining some Western motifs in Rochefort's Wyatt Earp fantasies. But while the ending is never in any doubt, one of the chief delights of the film is the unexpected turns it sometimes takes, never more than in a delightful scene in a bistro where Rochefort decides to take on some bad-mannered troublemakers against Hallyday's advice only to find things turning out very differently from what both men expected. Even scenes you'd expect to be played for comic disaster turn out quietly triumphant, such as Hallyday teaching one of Rochefort's private lessons for him - and actually turning out to be good at it despite never even reading the book under discussion.
It's a small film, but one that never feels like a chamber piece, and even if it slightly overplays its finale as each man briefly gets their wish, its small pleasures and genuine affection for its characters more than compensate. Sadly, unlike the French DVD, this release is barebones and devoid of extras, but the film itself is reason enough to buy.
EXCELLENT FOR UNDERSTANDING THE HEROIC AND GREAT WEARY FRENCH INTELLECT.......2006-06-13
I discovered this film on a rack in a liquor store in Mexico and brought it home for viewing. It builds much more slowly and subtly than the vast majority of American disposable blockbusters. In fact it withstands and demands and rewards several viewings, like re-reading James Joyce all of your life. I have used it very well in French One classes, and the students ask to see it again, despite the undeserved R ratiing. I cannot see anything in this film which merits the Restricted rating, except perhaps it does not make fun of the French, except in a very subtle and wry manner. If the R is for language, hey, it's in French! And I do not see any obscenities. Heck, Shreck has more obscenities. Rather this film is filled with poetry, including declaimed by a ruffian to his former poetry professor who confronts him as a means of ending his old and sad life and only comes out a hero. This film is way to subtle for the average American viewer trained on blast-and-crash movies, but please live with it awhile until you can perceive its intricate gossamer invisible webs and resonance. The forsaken robber who speaks only one line of original poetry at ten o'clock each morning is inexplicably gripping and poignant and exposing the harsh light of speaking about him only destroys the compelling effect. This gentle film builds slowly to the bright day of a fulfilling and illuminating and revelatory ending like great films as Grand Illusion or Babette's Feast. I highly recommend it, as one who lived in France over thirty years ago. Its American R rating is incomprehensible.
A Lasting Impact .......2006-03-27
A teacher and a lifelong criminal meet in a pharmacy in a small, out of season French town. The hotel is closed, the thief and his headache wind up at the teacher's big old family house. Days pass. One laconic, one loquacious, each is ever more drawn to the other's life. Saturday approaches; each prepares and subtly prepares the other for the approaching personal crossroads. And for both Saturday goes terribly wrong but brings one last shared miraculous moment and vision to move each man beyond what his life before has been. Meticulously acted by Jean Rochefort and a weary Johnny Halladay and tensely quiet until its jarring conclusion, Man on a Train retains its grip long after the final credits.
i saw this several years ago..........2005-12-16
and was pleased by the performances of the leads...what i like about johnny halliday's performance as milan, is that even though he's a bad guy, you still kinda end up liking him and even feeling bad for him at the end of the movie. in one scene, he shows a kid how to interpret a poem, which i thought was pretty funny. Manesquier ( jean rochefort ) is a nerd, but in one scene which he stands up to some bullies in a bar, proving he has a spine. milan and manesquier's friendship, makes the movie, each wishing they could live the other person's life, and that alone is enough. there have been few french films which i didn't like. this is one of my favorites...
Fatalism.......2005-06-11
We imagine ourselves to have free will, but most humans follow a trajectory set for them by society, family, circumstances. While possible to alter his fate, an individual will rarely put forward the strenuous effort to do so.
In "Man on the Train", two apparently different men meet by odd chance in a small town in France. One, Milan, is a rugged, tough criminal, an adventurer, a "doer". The other, Manesquier, is a frail, provincial retired school teacher...a dullard, a dreamer. Despite these differences, both men are weary of their lives, their destinies, to which they seem tethered like oxen to cart.
Milan dislikes his rootless life of crime. Manequier is bored with his predictable, provincial life. The two meet at a time when mortality confonts each one. The criminal intuits that an apparently easy bank robbery could be dangerous. The school-teacher will undergo triple-bypass surgery. Death provides the impetus and the serendipitous encounter provide the opportunity for the two men to shirk their fates momentarily and live the life they dream. Milan can be a comfortable "bourgeois de campagne" and Manequier, a roaming daredevil.
In the end, both men, whose lives seem so divergent, meet the same fate. One remembers, while viewing this film, Heidegger's instructions on the importance of keeping death present in our mind, if we are to lead complete lives. The two heroes of this story-at least briefly-accomplish this. Johny Hallyday (Milan) turns out to be a much better actor than pop-star in this thought-provoking, nuanced film.

True to its word, the 1986 film brings us up to date with the protagonists of the earlier picture. One-time movie script girl Anouk Aimee is now a producer, suffering a slump due to a string of box-office bombs. Former race car driver Jean-Louis Trintigant now books races for younger drivers. His love affair with Aimee long in the past, Tritignant is startled to receive an out-of-the-blue phone call from his former amour. She wants his permission to film a musical version of their romance, but with more "suitable" younger leads. Alas, Aimee has been part of the Studio System too long, and can't help but include a pointless subplot involving an escaped lunatic. Aimee must give up her show-biz excesses, and Tritignant must forsake his much-younger mistress Marie-Sophie Pochat, in order to clear the decks for a happy ending.

Does it really need to take 20 years!.......2006-04-03
Finally ... a happy ending after 2 decades! I found this sequel a week after the original and was glad to see a happy ending. Love doesn't die and can persist no matter how many years, activities, distractions, and justifications you come up with. When the old lovers are reunited they actually don't mess it up this time! A happy ending is rare in French films. Watch this and weep. Great to watch the duo with Before Sunrise/Before Sunset. It plays on the same kind of theme of lost time and memories.

Coach of the Year.......2005-03-19
This movie was out-of-date when it was produce in 1980. It reeks of the politically correctness movement of the Psyco- sixties & seventies. Even out of the bargain bin, this was no bargain.
COACH OF THE YEAR.......2003-08-03
I REALLY LIKE THIS MOVIE,I WATCHED IT WHEN IT FIRST WAS ON TELEVISION IN 1980.
I FIND ROBERT CONRADS ROLE IN THIS MOVIE COMMENDABLE,HE PORTRAYS SOMEONE WHO IS WILLING TO BUCK AUTHORITY IN ORDER TO SHOW THAT THE RESIDENTS FROM THE ST.CHARLES CORRECTIONAL FACILITY ARE CAPABLE OF BEING DECENT PERSONS WITH DIGNITY AND ARE CAPABLE OF ACCOMPLISHING SOMETHING IN SOCIETY.
ID ALSO LIKE TO COMMEND RED WESTS ROLE IN THIS MOVIE,IN THE ROLE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF THE CORRECTIONAL FACILITY,HE DOUBTED THE RESIDENTS COULD ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING WORTHWHILE,AND IN THE END DECIDED TO LET THEM PROVE IT,WHICH THEY DID.
I ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO WATCH THIS MOVIE.
COTY.......2002-08-22
how does a paralized guy in a wheelchair drive a car ion the beginning of the movie??? it was funny cuz it was bad.
mmm erin.......2001-11-15
I just bought it because Erin Gray's in it. She should do more acting, she's really good. Tasty to the eye, too. Other than that, the movie's ok.
You get what you pay for..........2001-11-06
This is a budget price DVD and the print is no better than what you would record off television. Get it only if you're a fan of Robert Conrad or Erin Gray. The print is terrible.
