Elf is genuinely good. Not just Saturday Night Live-movie good, when the movie has some funny bits but is basically an insult to humanity; Elf is a smartly written, skillfully directed, and deftly acted story of a human being adopted by Christmas elves who returns to the human world to find his father. And because the writing, directing, and acting are all genuinely good, Elf is also genuinely funny. Will Ferrell, as Buddy the adopted elf, is hysterically sincere. James Caan, as his rediscovered father, executes his surly dumbfoundedness with perfect aplomb. Zooey Deschanel, as a department store worker with whom Buddy falls in love, is adorably sardonic. Director Jon Favreau (Swingers) shepherds the movie through all the obligatory Christmas cliches and focuses on material that's sometimes subtle and consistently surprising. Frankly, Elf feels miraculous. Also featuring Mary Steenburgen, Bob Newhart, Peter Dinklage, and Ed Asner as Santa Claus. --Bret Fetzer

What a movie!.......2007-09-01
one of his best movies, and magical all the way, you get lost in the story line, and the music.
Good Christmas Show.......2007-08-26
We loved this show. How fun!!! We plan on watching it every Christmas. It is a good family show.
One of the funniest family movies I've ever seen!.......2007-06-10
This movie is loved by my whole family, all ages, from the 3-year-old up to the 64-year-old! A hilarious adventure for all! The character Elf is so lovable and the movie just touches your heart (and your funny bone!).
Thanks to Ferrell, it's no lump of coal.......2007-05-26
The yuletide season always brings a handful of holiday-themed releases, but most of them are pure humbug. It's only every five years or so that a true holiday classic comes along. Elf, from actor/director Jon Favreau ("Swingers"), tries to buck that trend by dressing Will Ferrell in tights and putting his comic skills to the test.
Ferrell plays Buddy, a human who grew up among Santa's elves. When he was a baby, he snuck into Santa's bag on Christmas Eve and wasn't discovered until Santa was back at the North Pole. Papa Elf (Bob Newhart) "adopted" Buddy and raised him. But now, Buddy is sticking out like a sore thumb within the elf community because of his ungainly size, unable to perform classic elf functions like toy building.
Buddy decides the answer to his problems is to seek out his human father Walter (James Caan) in New York City. Walter is the stereotypical big-business prick, and initially wants nothing to do with his elf-son freak. That leaves Buddy to inadvertently score a job at a department store, which leads to a romance with fellow store employee Jovie (Zooey Deschanel) and much hilarity when Buddy prepares for a visit from "Santa," thinking the real deal is on the way. When he sees that the store-hired Santa is actually an imposter, hilarious havoc ensues.
Walter slowly starts to warm to Buddy, who befriends his wife (Mary Steenburgen) and neglected son (Daniel Tay). But as Buddy becomes an increasingly disruptive presence at Walter's workplace, the fragile new family bond is threatened. Things comes to a head on Christmas Eve, naturally, as Santa begins his toy-delivering run and Walter desperately tries to make an 11th hour book sale.
Director Favreau and his crew deserve props for their work in creating the elf community. By using forced perspective and some cool animation techniques, they do a great job of building a unique world that captures the feel of the classic "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Frosty The Snowman" animated holiday specials.
The screenplay, by newcomer David Berenbaum, is best when it places Ferrell in inventive fish-out-of-water scenarios. The story does stoop to formulaic scenarios from time-to-time, but it's a little more forgivable in this instance, since we're talking about a Christmas movie. The cast is also a mixed bag. Former Academy Award nominees Caan and Steenburgen are largely wasted in thankless roles, but Newhart and Deschanel make the most of theirs.
Fortunately, when the film threatens to get stuck in syrupy cliche, the wacky Ferrell comes to the rescue. He pulls out all the stops in an off-the-wall comedic performance that will have you in stitches. From wild slapstick to nuanced facial expressions, this is pure comedic genius at work.
It remains to be seen whether "Elf" becomes a new holiday classic, but thanks to Ferrell, it's definitely no lump of coal. It's a great way to have some holiday fun and raise your Christmas spirits.
Way Too Fun to Take Seriously.......2007-05-17
Elf is one of my all-time favorite Christmas movies.
Will Ferrell fans fall into two camps: the ones that appreciate his raunchy side, and those who find his goofy innocence charming.
I'm in the second camp.
My children and I quote Elf often. "Does somebody need a hug?" is a favorite.
But I know perfectly wonderful people who hated the movie.
If you go for art or brilliant acting/writing, or a deep heartfelt message to take away with you -- you probably shouldn't go there with Elf. The logical will be annoyed with the elf adoption and flying sleigh logistics.
But if you find it at all amusing when grown men wear tights and get sideswiped by taxis, Elf may be singing your song. Does excessive childlike behavior no matter how old the child, coax a smile? Then Elf may be a movie you'll add to your favorites list.
Elf may fall into that category with Napoleon Dynamite...either you love it or you hate it. And I'm a Napoleon fan. I even loved Nacho Libre, Three Amigos and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Give me an excellent sight gag, some physical humor and a few great one-liners and I'm in.

Customer Reviews:
MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY CARTOON VIDEO !!.......2007-09-03
This is one of the coolest holiday collections in Disney history. Three stories are included on this dvd.
The first one, I hate so i don't remember the title. But it's a very depressing story about a boy and his donkey.
The second one is a Chip N' Dale CLASSIC that features, Mickey & Pluto. (Pluto's Christmas Tree) I personally am a HUGE fan of the Chip N' Dale cartoons, simply because they are silly without losing their comedic value. I laugh THINKING about it.
The last one is truly the best: Mickey's Christmas Carol. I bought two copies of this movie and sent one to my friend's little boy because I loved it so much.
It's based on the Charles Dickens classic: A Christmas Carol and sticks to the script the whole way through. The cast of characters do an excellent job portraying all the original characters in the book! Mickey as Bob Cratchett, Scrooge McDuck as Ebenezer Scrooge of course, Goofy as the ghost of Jacob Marley, and even Donald Duck shows an excellent performance in the ALMOST miscast role of Scrooge's light-hearted, warm loving NEPHEW! LOL
The ONLY reason I didn't give this movie 5 stars is because of the depressing "donkey cartoon" in the beginning. I promise you it will be a joy for your family for years to come!
*PLEASE EXCUSE ALL SPELLING ERRORS!!*
"A DVD to Remember".......2007-06-18
This DVD has Pluto's Christmas Tree with those lovable chipmunks, Chip 'n' Dale. It also has Mickey's Christmas Carol which I remember watching every year on television growing up in the eighties. This DVD is worth it for those two alone. I have not seen The Small One. What would have made this perfect is if they would have also included the short where Donald is aggravated by his nephews and so a snow fight ensues (forget the actual name of the short). I remember they would air this one on tv as well right before Mickey's Christmas Carol to fill up the entire hour time slot. Still, this release is a must-have for anyone who grew up with these fond memories as a child. Just the music and singing in Mickey's Christmas Carol is enough to warm my heart.
I bought it for ONE reason only.......2007-02-28
I have two favorite Christmas Specials from when I was young - 1) How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the animated short, not the Jim Carrey movie) and 2) Mickey's Christmas Carol.
The Grinch is still shown (usually) each year, but it's been a number of years since I'd seen Mickey's Christmas Carol and I had to have it. Yes, it's the same old Dicken's story, but there are some CLASSIC moments (Goofy as Marley saying Scrooge will be visited by 3 ghosts but he's only holding up 2 fingers).
One of my favorite versions of the Dicken's classic.
I JUST LOVE IT.......2007-02-01
I HAD THE VHS VERSION, AND WE WATCH IT EVERY YEAR.
I LIKE THE THREE STORIES, BUT SMALL ONE IS MY FAVORITE
I WONDER WHEN CAN I FIND THIS DVD ON SPANISH.??
THIS DVD IS ALSO IN SPANISH?
Great Family Tradition.......2007-01-21
This is a family classic that will be come a true family favorite. Appropriate for all ages and especially great for those who cherish the holidays.

Based on Anna Quindlen's bestselling novel, this is a mother-daughter and father-daughter story, two for the price of one. But director Carl Franklin also tries to inject a police-mystery angle that it neither needs nor will support. Renee Zellweger plays a young writer on the rise, who has finally gotten her break for a New York magazine. While home for a birthday party for her nearly famous writer father (William Hurt), she learns that her mother (Meryl Streep) has been diagnosed with cancer. Then her father does the unthinkable: He all but commands her to put her career on hold to take care of her mother and nurse her through her illness. Dad, a popular college professor who has never gotten the literary acclaim he always believed he deserved, essentially checks out--and daughter must play parent to her mother. Strong performances by Streep and Zellweger give this parent-child relationship the heart--and the anger--of the real thing, while Hurt seems slightly disembodied as the self-involved father whose needs have dominated both women. Still, the detective-story aspect (the film is told in flashback, as the cops try to discover whether someone slipped Mom a fatal dose of morphine) is a construct that could have been done without. --Marshall Fine
Customer Reviews:
Great Movie, Great Actors.......2007-09-16
One True Thing was released in 1998 (two years after Jerry McGuire) and stars Renee Zellweger and Meryl Streep. Renee portrays Ellen Gulden (or Ellie as her family calls her), a moxie journalist living in New York. She goes home to visit her family for the holidays and finds out her mother (Meryl) has cancer. Her father demands that she give up everything to move back home and take care of her mother. Because she adores her father and longs for his respect she does it.
One True Thing is beautifully filmed and acted. Without giving too much information, it is filmed from the perspective of Ellen as she's being interviewed by a lawyer about her mother's death. Her flashbacks are quite different from the words coming out of her mouth.
Ellie's mother has always been more of a silly inconvenience to her. As she begins to get to know her mother and see her father through adult eyes she realizes she has missed out on a truly fabulous woman. She also begins to discover the kind of woman she has grown into and what she wants out of her own life. I found this film interesting, entertaining and emotionally moving.
Gilmore Girls starlet, Lauren Graham makes an appearance as the loyal best friend, Tom Everett Scott plays Ellen's impressionable brother and William Hurt her emotionally detached father. The film is based on the book by the same name written by Anna Quindlen. After watching it I consider it one of Renee's and Meryl's best films. Reviewed by M.E. Wood.
Warms you right up........2007-09-15
One True Thing starring Meryl Streep and Renee Zellweger is a film that you remember. Beautifully acted by Zellweger, she plays a young career woman who is forced to move back home to take care of her cancer-stricken mother played by Streep. Zellweger brings warmth and sensitivity to her role and William Hurt is excellent as well as the cheating and unconcered husband of Streep. One True Thing doesn't have a magical Hollywood ending and that's a good thing, this film is 100% real and engaging. I highly recommend checking this drama out. Happy viewing!
Believable.......2007-06-16
I had a hard time putting into words how I feel about One True Thing. This is a believable movie about one families' struggle to battle their mother's cancer. Through their journey they were able to come closer as a family and learn more about each other....until the end where they learn the one true thing.
I really think that Meryl Streep did a fantastic job at playing Kate, the mother. It was almost life-like.
If anyone has ever seen anyone struggle with a disease, they can identify with this movie. Be forewarned, tissues are a must. :-(
A view to a soul!.......2007-05-16
Ellen (Zellwegger) is a rising star with a New York magazine that may have just gotten her big break and chance to 'wow' her literary professor father (Hurt) with her new found success.
After she returns home to attend a birthday party for her father she learns that her mother (Streep) has been diagnosed with cancer. Ellen's father guilts her into saying that she will put her future on hold and move home to help care for her mother. In Ellen's eyes her father was strong and authoritative, intelligent and stoic; while her mother was silly and naïve and involved herself in frivolous, meaningless things.
Over the course of her mother's care Ellen begins to see things in a different light. Convinced that her father is cheating on her mother while she has been forced to be the caregiver she begins to blaze a new path of consciousness. In a twist of circumstance Ellen comes to realize that her father never had an original thought of his own and that her mother was the backbone of the family...the one who understood the capacity of each member of the family and the one that soothed and protected the wounds of missed opportunities and bore the brunt of failures. She was his "One True Thing."
One True Thing
Life is full of surprises.......2006-08-12
A close, loving and stable family is knocked back on its heels when Mum (Meryl Streep), the strong uniting force develops cancer. Dad (John Hurt) is too busy with his career as a university professor and head of department to look after mum and it is inconceivable to employ a nurse, even though there is money enough to do it, so it falls to the daughter (Renée Zellweger) to put her career at risk to look after her. She makes an enormous sacrifice and performs miracles looking after her mum but her dad doesn't really appreciate it and carries on with his own career and affairs. The son does very little to help and on top fails his exams. The daughter finds out some quite unpalatable things about her dad which she thinks mum doesn't know. We see poor mum gradually dying from cancer and in the end the pain and suffering is too much and she is dispatched to the better life. But who did it? The daughter, dad or.......
On the whole a very good, engrossing film. I shall watch it again soon.

Grab an econo-pack of tissues, gather your loved ones around a cozy television, and bring on the hot cocoa--it's time for a dose of Christmas spirit. The tender and charming Mary Steenburgen (Parenthood) dons a sour disposition in her role as Ginny Grainger, a woman who finds little joy in life lately--let alone in the impending holiday season. Money is tight, her husband (beautifully downplayed by nice-guy Gary Basaraba) lost his job, and the family must move out of their house. Ginny cannot even bring herself to say, "Merry Christmas," despite her family's enthusiasm about the big day. With help from Ginny's brave and loving daughter (sweetly performed by Elisabeth Harnois) and a Christmas angel named Gideon (Harry Dean Stanton), Ginny undergoes a life-altering experience à la It's a Wonderful Life. The result? Happy endings, hugs and kisses, pass the tissues.
Not a light holiday entertainer by any means, the plot verges on depressing at times, as the family struggles through money issues and the tedium of daily suburban survival. While handled fairly subtly, some of the bridging story--including a shooting, a kidnapping, and a drowning--might prove disturbing to children under 6 years old. And really: if the somber Harry Dean Stanton (Paris, Texas) repeatedly appeared in your neighborhood, cloaked in a cowboy hat and overcoat, would you allow your kids outside? Still, a well-made favorite to cherish. --Liane Thomas
Description
Award-winning actress Mary Steenburgen (TV's JOAN OF ARCADIA, HOPE SPRINGS) gives a solid performance as Ginny Grainger, a young mother who rediscovers the joy and beauty of Christmas, thanks to the unshakable faith of her six-year-old daughter Abbie (Elizabeth Harnois) and Gideon (Harry Dean Stanton), Ginny's very own guardian angel. Ginny's wondrous experience will touch your heart and warm your soul in the timeless tradition of past Disney favorites. ONE MAGIC CHRISTMAS fulfills all your most treasured Christmas fantasies. Share it with those you love.

One Magic Christmas.......2007-09-09
Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without viewing certain movies and One Magic Christmas is one of them. I feel as if I am in the center of this movie feeling all the emotions. I owned this on VHS and am now converting my collection of all my favorites to DVD's and this was one that had to be involved.
One of the Best.......2007-08-16
Since the ghost of Christmas future showed Scrooge what would happen to him if he didn't change his ways, a host of stories have used the "alternate future" or "alternate reality" ploy to help their protagonist feel different about Christmas and life in general. Not since "It's a Wonderful Life" has such a story been told this well with such a brilliant cast. No, it's not the same plot. This movie involves a family who is facing financial and emotional crisis when a "cowboy angel" played perfectly by Harry Dean Stanton intervenes to help the mother, (Steenburgen) see it all from a better perspective.
My family was very glad when the DVD because available, because our VHS copy had been played to death.
Hope you get a chance to see it this Christmas season.

Pure Christmas!!!.......2007-06-08
This is a touching, wonderful Christmas movie. It does not have any of the cynicism that is in most of the Christmas movies of late.
Christmas is the importance of family.......2007-02-13
I absolutely love this movie. The main character (Mary Steenbergen) is a bah-humbug scrooge working mother, who does not appreciate the blessings she has in life (health and family). She hates Christmas and all of the expense that goes with it. She has two lovely children and an adoring husband who spends his spare time - get this - refurbishing bicycles to give to poor children (now THAT'S my idea of a real man)! An angel helps teach her the HARD WAY, to see that her glass is half full, not half empty. Keep a BIG box of kleenex handy. And it is not necessarily a chick flick - my husband loves this movie, also!
One Magic Christmas Review.......2007-01-31
One of the "must see" Christmas movies. A family oriented movie that will rekindle the Christmas spirit in everyone. We have this on VCR tape and have watched it so much that we purchased the DVD version. Enjoy.

The Backstreet Boys' The Video Hits: Chapter One is an entertaining collection of video hits from their albums Backstreet Boys, Millennium, and Black & Blue. It's not an exact duplication of the companion CD, The Hits: Chapter One, as it lacks the video for "Drowning." Each video offers something unique, from sending up the Michael Jackson classic "Thriller" in "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)," to the sci-fi themed "Larger Than Life" to several straight-ahead performances with great sets, special effects, bare chests, and dance breaks. "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely" is an especially moving tribute to the band's personal losses. "I Want It That Way" portrays a stylized road tour and "The One" shows a live performance. The best story video is "The Call," a tale of infidelity and seduction. --Larry Clark

This movie was GREAT! I've seen this and "Back Street Stories" and this ranked way higher than that movie. I'm tellin' ya if you want to buy a Backstreet Boy movie that has no Bad motions, cuss words or sexual content this is the one to get.But there is one song that parents might want to listen to first. It's called "EveryBody [Backstreets Back]" and it says.."Am i The Only One" "Am I SEXUAL" "Am I everything You better Rock your Body right." I know my parents don't like that But thats preety much it. I hope i didn't spoile it for you. That is just one song so your ok. My parents didn't buy this for me but we rented it & if i did get it I would watch it EVERYDAY OF MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!
these videos are hot.......2005-08-06
i love the backstreet videos, theyre so fun to watch because it looks like the boys have fun in all of them! all of their videos are really creative and make the fans want to watch more. the videos are funny and/or beautiful. i love the everybody video and the show me the meaning of being lonely videos especially because everybody looks so awesome and the guys look really good. the choreography in it is soo tite too. in the show me the meaning video it really shows the true and deep side of the boys. its really sad. their first vid quit playin` games is pretty good for their first official video. it shows that the boys hav more than singing talent but great bodies! i love this tape!
I Want It That Way - And You'll Want to Own This DVD!.......2005-06-16
BackStreet's Back!!! All right!!!!!
I admit, I was a fan back in by college listening to this stuff, and it's really good stuff. Sure, it's very cheesy and the little girls liked them too at the time, but I'm 33 years old now and even I can appreciate the musical talents of these 5 guys. This DVD package includes their hits from their first 3 albums and it's truly their best stuff. The crazy video "Everybody" is worth the price of admission. It's the Ultimate Halloween video. The classic "I Want It That Way" sounds better than ever and you'll want to play it over and over. Larger Than Life, Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely, Quit Playing Games W/My Heart, As Long As You Love Me and tons more--- what's not to like?
The best part of this DVD is hearing in Dolby Digital 5.1 and people with high end speakers will want to jam hard with this stuff. People make fun of these guys all the time, but the fans know this is music worth listening to and with their new album out too, it shows they still have a niche for music lovers. If you want to rehash the 90's in true DVD glory, give this DVD a shot, it's good stuff.

Product Description
Hailed as a "rewarding gift" and "an unexpected pleasure," One Christmas is a timeless holiday treasure based on Truman Capote's bittersweet tale of a young boy's adventures with the father he's never known. It's a classic family story featuring acclaimed performances from an award-winning cast, including the legendary Katharine Hepburn, Henry Winkler, Swoosie Kurtz, and Julie Harris.
It's Christmas 1930, and eight-year-old Buddy (T.J. Lowther) finds himself in New Orleans spending the holidays with his estranged father (Winkler). Leaving behind his Aunt Sook (Harris) and the peaceful Alabama country life, Buddy now endures a conniving, hard living, deceitful con man of a dad who seems to care more about fast buck scams than earning his son's affection.
Buddy dreams of finding Santa, a snow-covered New Orleans and a new relationship with his father. His dad is looking for something real in a life of lies. Finally, father and son realize the greatest thing they have is each other. It's a gift that comes just in time for one unforgettable Christmas..

Truman Capote's classic Depression-era short story is well served in One Christmas, an earnest holiday heartwarmer from the folks at Hallmark Entertainment. It's got all the sentiment one would expect from a Hallmark TV movie, but director Tony Bill knows just how to moderate the maudlin and focus on genuine emotions (as he did for his big-screen releases Untamed Heart and A Home of Our Own). Of course it never hurts to have Katharine Hepburn on board for some high-class pedigree: In her final performance the Hollywood legend goes out on a high note, delivering a pivotal scene about living life with no regrets, and she may just as well be describing her own independent spirit. The great Kate plays a wealthy New Orleans socialite whose spinster niece (Swoosie Kurtz, giving the film's best performance) is vulnerable to the gold-digging charms of a con artist (Henry Winkler) whose estranged 8-year-old son (T.J. Lowther, from Clint Eastwood's A Perfect World) has arrived from Alabama with high expectations that his father can't meet. Dashed hopes and cynical behavior threaten to ruin the boy's Christmas, but Bill and his esteemed cast stay true to the well-earned sentiment of Capote's story, arriving at a moment of fatherly redemption that is nicely accented by Van Dyke Parks's understated score. You'd have to be a Scrooge to disapprove. --Jeff Shannon

Another great Christmas movie.......2007-06-14
Great movie for Christmas and the family get together
Good entertainment.......2007-01-12
A wonderful moving movie. Good to see Ms. Hepburn at her best. Enjoy!!!
Leave this on the shelf!.......2004-12-23
We were very disappointed in this movie. Terrible script, virtually no character development.Don't bother.
Stick with "Its a Wonderful Life".......2004-12-13
I agree with the people who gave this one or two stars, no character development.
There are much better xmas movies out there!
"Reality Christmas".......2003-12-18
"One Christmas" was a film I happened upon some years ago. I did not know that it had been a story or a play, etc. I viewed it because I was familiar with the talents of the late Kathrine Hepburn and the talented Henry Winkler.
The story is not typical Christmas fare, but it is more real than many of the idylic Christmas movies. It is a tribute to the truth that many people struggle 365 days a year--their imperfections not taking a holiday.
Anyone who enjoys the talents of Winkler/Hepburn will enjoy this film; it is not stellar, not is not neccesarily their best performance, but it is a nice piece of "reality Christmas", if you will.

Reviled by critics and embraced by the public during its initial run (1981), Porky's is interesting to watch after all these years. What holds up about this horny coming-of-age tale is remarkable. Writer/director Bob Clark has little more than sex and practical joking on his mind, and his high school seniors from Angel Beach, Florida, rapidly move from one to the other. Clark displays a sense of timing and, perhaps rarer still, a sense of male friendship--its brutalities and its bonds--that feels right, not artificial. Surprisingly, the showcase practical jokes are still funny: the Everglades encounter with Cherry Forever, the hole in the girls' shower, and Beulah Balbricker, the humongous gym teacher. The comedic set-ups and payoffs surprisingly still work. Clark's insistence on a subplot about anti-Semitism, however, still sticks out as A MESSAGE. Kim Cattrall really got her start here (although almost no one else did) as Ms. Honeywell, a.k.a. "Lassie." Clark later distanced himself from the irritating Porky's sequels and went on to make the wonderful Christmas Story, the tale of a little boy who wants a BB gun for Christmas. --Keith Simanton

Loved the movie - waiting on the HD-DVD Edition.......2007-09-11
I saw this movie when it first came out in theaters. I bought the movie when it came out on VHS. I'll buy the movie again if it comes out on HD-DVD. Otherwise, I'll keep my VHS player tuned up :)
Turns the Animal House premise into a sub-genre of its own..........2007-08-02
...and then goes it one better. I'm sure it wasn't lost on the creators that "American Graffitti" turned out to be a classic and then morphed into the equally-classic TV series "Happy Days". Where this eventual trilogy differs from "Animal House" is that the National Lampoon release never made any bones about being a Rock'n'Rowdy romp, done in broad strokes, where the "Porky's" series gives us characters we can like as people. Like the hapless Pee Wee (Dan Monahan), whose agonizing over his virginity gives you the feeling he considers late middle-age to be right around the corner. Or Wendy (Kaki Hunter), one of those girls who always ends up the topic of male bull sessions. The difference is that everybody likes her because she's got a great personality and a great sense of humor, particularly when she winds up the butt of the now-legendary "Mike Hunt" prank played by Pee Wee. It's ironic how the two figure in the ending. The portly namesake of this film and his redneck nightclub end up being almost incidental to the story because of the way it focuses on these kids and their antics.
Funny and enjoyable teen sex comedy from the 80's........2007-07-17
In the early 50's in Flordia, six sex crazed teen boys want their sexual cravings to be fulfiled even if they have to peek in the girl's locker room. They decides to go to a raunchy strip bar called "Porky's" where their erotic dreams can come true until the owner known as Porky himself boots them out, now the boys must come up with a clever scheme to get revenge.
Very entertaining and funny sex comedy from Bob Clark who gave us "Black Christmas (1974)" and "A Christmas Story" that became a critically bashed but unexpected box-office hit back in 1982. It gives the viewers the truth behind teen horniness back in the fifties in a sleazy and funny view, the film contains Kim Cattral long before she become a successful actress as a sexy cheerleader that howls whenever she's in heat. With the success of this movie, it lead to two sequels and the teen sex movie craze in it's wake with an upcoming remake by Howard Stern coming soon.
This Special Edition DVD has good picture and sound with very good extras like a full length audio commentary by the late Bob Clark, Trailers to this and "Porky's 2 and 3", Video Game Sales Pitch, TV Promos and two featurettes.
Also recommended: "American Pie Trilogy", "Revenge of the Nerds", "Road House", "Animal House", "Road Trip", "EuroTrip", "Van Wilder", "There's Something about Mary" and "The 40 Year Old Virgin".
"I've never seen so much wool. You could knit a sweater!".......2007-05-24
Without a doubt, this is the one that "started it all." THE essential sex comedy, not just of the 80's, but of all time. Is it the best movie ever made in this genre? Perhaps not. But any film in the same genre that was ever made after it owes its existence to "Porky's." Prudes are advised to stay FAR away from this, but anyone else looking for some major laughs (and ok, a lot of vulgarity and tastelessness thrown in) have come to the right place. And what's not to love about a movie that features a very young (and ever so hot) Kim Cattrall, and in a nude scene to top it off?
I'm not going to give yet another rundown of the plot, because that's been done more than enough times here. I'll just make some comments on this new "One Size Fits All" DVD edition.
What first stands out to me about this new edition is the great picture quality. It has finally gotten cleaned-up and is a vast improvement over the previous bare-bones DVD edition. Considering the age of this film, it simply looks great on this new DVD. My speakers are of average quality so I can't elaborate on whether the audio is improved or not, but it sounds fine to me.
And now to the bonus material. I wouldn't call it exceptional, but it's definitely nice to finally have a commentary track from director Bob Clark. He adds some great insight into the film. The other 2 major features, "Porky's Through the Peephole: Bob Clark Looks Back" and "Porky's: A Comedy Classic" aren't that different from one another in terms of content, basically retrospective and nostalgic segments by those involved in making the film. Worth a look but nothing earth-shattering. The other features consist of the original trailer, trailers for "Porky's 2: The Morning After" and "Porky's Revenge" and a rather odd segment on the video game presentation.
One thing I find a little disappointing is that no deleted scenes are here. There's a 2-page booklet inside the DVD case that contains more in-depth information about the production of the film, and it says that several scenes had to be altered or cut out completely to avoid getting an "X" rating. Although I'm sure they had their reasons to not include those scenes here, it would have been interesting to see Bob Clark's original and uncut vision of the film.
Still, I give this new DVD presentation an easy 5 stars. Also recommended: the new "Revenge of the Nerds: Panty Raid" special edition DVD.
Funny coming of age movie. Horrible DVD print.......2007-05-13
This movie is funny in an old fashioned way, but the DVD quality of the film print is a noisy, messy looking print. It should be cleaned up for DVD to get rid of the pixels and video noise.

To fully enjoy Reindeer Games, it must be approached properly: your disbelief must be checked at the door, as this John Frankenheimer film needs be taken with a liberal dose of pure faith in the magic of movie plotting.
Christmas approaches and all Rudy Duncan (Ben Affleck) can think about is the hot chocolate and pecan pie beckoning when he gets out of prison in a couple of days. But standing between him and his sated stomach is Ashley (Charlize Theron), an irresistible woman waiting for him upon his release. Without giving away any of the myriad twists of this thriller, Rudy falls for Ashley, thus becoming forcibly embroiled in a casino-robbery scheme helmed by Ashley's brother Gabriel (Gary Sinise).
Frankenheimer, who excels at devious plot machinations, à la The Manchurian Candidate, goes far enough here to stretch the patience of even his most loyal fans. The script relies a little heavily on bad Christmas jokes, and the film is overwhelmed with close-ups. The convoluted turns become outrageous to the point of ludicrous; yet it's all done in the spirit of fun, and once you get past the implausibility, Frankenheimer takes you on a rousing ride. While Affleck doesn't seem quite hardened enough to be a convicted car thief, he does a superb job with a thin script, and Sinise is as sinister as ever. Theron provides more decoration than acting due to the lightweight plot, but my, what lovely decoration she is. For a thought-provoking evening, stick with the earlier Frankenheimer films; for an adrenaline-pumping evening, Reindeer Games has all the violence, chases, and sex scenes for a night of entertaining diversion. --Jenny Brown
Description
After being imprisoned for six years on a grand theft auto charge, Rudy Duncan and his cellmate Nick are finally going to be paroled. After hearing endless stories during his incarceration of Nick's romantic correspondence to a woman named Ashley he has never met, Rudy is looking forward to returning to his family. When Nick is killed during a prison riot, Rudy decides to assume Nick's identity and meet up with the unknown woman. Burdened with knowledge of Nick's Indian casino employment past, Rudy finds himself in too deep with Ashley's brother Gabriel and is forced to cooperate with a casino robbery that Gabriel and his gang have been planning with Nick in mind.

Very Entertaining.......2006-06-20
"Reindeer Games" works on so many levels as an action film, it's damn near flawless. In fact, I think it is flawless except for the lame-brained twist that was thrown in at the end, but that didn't ruin it so I stick to my five stars. I'm going to have to start trusting Elmore Leonard a lot more, because his mini-review on the cover sums up everything well. "Reindeer Games Rocks! A High-Energy Thriller That Never Lets Go." He's more accurate than Stephen King has been about certain movies. Anyways, the movie stars Ben Affleck as Rudy; a prison inmate who listens to his cellmate Nick talk about his penpal. The penpal is Ashley (Charlize Theron) who waits for Nick to get out of prison. Rudy and Nick each get out on the same day (3 days) and discuss what they're going to do. Nick is going to meet up with Ashley, Rudy is going to get some hot chocolate. But then, Nick dies and Rudy assumes his identity and meets up with Ashley. Things click between Rudy and Ashley (she's under the impression he's Nick) but then things change again. Ashley's brother Gabriel (Gary Sinise) has read some of the letters and plans to use Nick to help him and his gang rob a casino. Explaining to them that he's not Nick, does Rudy no good and he ends up being caught up inescapably part of the plan. The movie also boasts an impressive cast that includes Dennis Farina (Get Shorty), Danny Trejo (The Devil's Rejects), and Donal Logue (TV's Grounded for Life). Now, besides the great plot and interesting twists; the movie is also fueled by some great performances. Affleck is believable as Rudy and Theron is perfect at going from good girl to deceitful b**ch. It's Sinise that really packs some punch though. This is Gary Sinise in top form and this is the role that he is meant to play. The long haired, bearded bad guy. Sinise truly delivers some great supporting work here. This is one of the most exciting action films I've seen in a long time and if you're not a big fan of action films, well there's a bonus...Check out Charlize Theron's nude scene (not a sex scene, but a pre-sex scene; You can count on seeing some t 'n' a though).
GRADE: A
Good movie, needs more tho..........2006-03-17
Its one of those movies, that you get hyped up on and you go up and down on during the movie, with the hype, if you havent seen it already watch it for the first time, its good...but after you've seen it more than once, everything falls in its own place, if this sounds good to you... pick it up.. its a 4 out of 5 in my book... well for first timers anyways then id say a 3 for the people who watch movies over and over like myself.
Sex, love & betrayal.......2004-11-19
I've been after seeing this movie for quite a while, but never got round to buying it. I'm glad I borrowed it now - don't get me wrong, it's a good movie, but I doubt I'd watch it again. It's very Christmassy though. And we get to see Ben Affleck's butt - although he's got a bit of a fuzzy chest. Can't have it all, can we? There's a lot of butt to pinch there!
Most of the plot is very unbelieveable in this, and there's lot of violence that is in very bad taste. The ending is hinted at at the beginning - don't be eating at the start - and by the time the movie does finish off after a very long & dragged out process, there's been so many twists, that you're left wondering who's double/triple crossing who, and some twists reverse the direction you thought the film was travelling in. The twists are the cause for making the film less believeable, because they just wouldn't happen! And they're cliched to boot. Of course there's the usual, `I-won't-kill-you-now, I'll-give-you-an-exotic-and-elaborate-death-that-never-works' cliché along with countless others.
I loved the poster for this, although it looks airbrushed beyond belief. I loved nearly all the actors in this, although I didn't like Gary Sinise as the bad guy. He wasn't very believeable. Ben Affleck was great, showing off his tattooed arms, and Little Miss Blemish-Free, Clear Skin Charlize Theron shows she can hold a film, and also managed to get in some practice for her future film, Monster. Watching this, made me dig out Sweet November and have a good cry over that. If you blush easily, there's a rather saucy scene between Benny & Charlize, which practically made me blush! And his butt takes up most of the screen, that can't be a good thing! I'm not sure that scene was handled so well, it could have been done with a lot more taste. And after seeing Charlize so many times in Devil's Advocate, I'm sick of seeing her charms shall we say! Although I'm sure the guys aren't. If you've got it, flaunt it, as some people say it, and boy does she ever! Also, it's cold and boys, we girls would not go braless, cos certain things - well, put it this way, we have on as many layers as possible. Charlize must have been freezing throughout shooting!
There's not much to recommend about this movie. I assume from the theatrical to the director's cut, most of the saucier scenes were cut, as were most likely the shoot out scenes. It's a good movie to lose a couple of hours to, but if you're expecting a fast paced movie, then this isn't for you.
Ben Affleck in Reindeer Games.......2004-11-07
Ben Affleck fan, gives a good performance and manages to be the hero in this film.
Affleck plays a prison inmate, Rudy Duncan who is
about to be released in 3 days with his pal NIck Cassidy (James Frain).
Nick is an ex-convict who dreams about the girl
that keeps writing him letters, who he has never met. Ashley Mercer.
Everthing seems great for Nick and Rudy, but a prison lunch room fight ends up in the killing of Nick. Rudy just barely ends up getting killed himself.
Then on the day of his release ,Rudy awaits outside along with
the other inmates for the bus that will take them away from their hell hole.
Rudy is about to board the bus when he spots a girl waiting for somebody.
Taking into consideration that Ashley,Nick's admirer doesnt know that Nick has been killed ,Rudy realizes that this girl is indeed Ashley. However, knowing that the girl is waiting for Nick, Rudy decides to take the identity of his friend.
This at first seems like a good decision that Rudy has made, he gets to spend a night with a great girl, but then trouble starts brewing in.
Ashley's so called brother,Gabriel (played well by Gary Sinise) enters and he starts to beat the hell out of Rudy, thinking that Rudy is indeed Nick.
You see Nick used to work in the gambling casinos and he was planning a big robbery which would make him rich.
Rudy at first denies he is NIck,but this just leads to more trouble, then Rudy tries to make a run for it and he is caught.
Then Rudy goes along with the fact that he is Nick
and manages to stay long enough to turn the
tables on the would be burglars.
There is alot more to Reindeer Games, at first
we are lead to belive that Ashley and Gabriel are siblings,
but later on this is not the case.
There are so many twists and turns that just
when you think it's over,it's not.
This is the latest movie by John Frankenheimer and
he shows that he can still make great movies in the
year 2000 (He has been making films for over 50 years.)
Id tell you more, but that would take all the fun
out of it.
Dont listen to the critics, they too were fooled
by the different twists of the movie.
The movie became a big box office hit and made Ben Affleck recognizable as more than a comedic, drama type actor, he has shown that he can play the hero too.
GOOD MOVIE! QUESTION.......2004-08-16
Hi,
I normally write reviews about some movies. I really have a question about the movie. I have the original version. In the trailer police cars exploded in the streets, a building explodes ect.... Its not in the version I have. Is it in the Directors Cut? Any information would be greatly helpful. The movie it self is good. I think Gary did a GREAT job as a villan. I would reccomend this movie to action/thriller people. I enjoyed it alot, but still cant find those explosions in the trailer. Any help is great! My email is Devilboy123@comcast.net

I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman.......2004-03-23
After seeing Mark Borchardt and Mike Schank in the true life documentary American Movie: The Making of Northwestern (1999), I was excited to see they were involved in another project, Britney Baby One More Time (2002). I really like that film, and maybe it was unfair to expect what I did from this movie based on that, as this film didn't quite satisfy as I hoped it would.
The movie, partly based on a true story, stars Mark as Dude Schmitz, and Mike Shank as Mike Schmitz, Dude's brother. Dude is a struggling independent filmmaker in Wisconsin desperately in need of financing for his latest project, and falls into a gig to interview the real Britney Spears. After a interview cut short due to Dude's question regarding the realism of some of Britney's more impressive attributes, Dude has a chance meeting with a Britney Spears impersonator, Robert Stephans, played by Angel Benton. This is where the movie duplicates real life events as Angel Benton is a Britney Spears impersonator in real life, and truly won a Spears impersonation contest, allowing for a meeting with Angel's pop star idol, only to have it taken away due to a misunderstanding. After Dude's meeting with Britney/Angel, he comes up with the idea to try and use Angel as the real Britney, promising constant coverage as they travel to where the real Britney Spears is performing in New Orleans. Only thing is, Angel is duped into believing the footage being shot with him is the ultimate fan's perspective, and not that he is being portrayed as the real Britney. The whole thing may seem messy, but it wasn't too difficult to keep track.
I thought the movie to be pretty good and funny in a number of scenes, but I was really hoping for more of what I loved about American Movie: The Making of Northwestern, which, as I stated before, also starred the two main actors in this film. Where that film had heart, showing a independent filmmaker struggling tirelessly and with childlike abandon to complete a project, this one was a bit shallow, and even silly at times, and tended to get bogged down in its' own smartness and tongue-in-cheek presentation and embellishment of the original story. Angel Benton certainly is a very good impersonator, mimicking Britney Spears well, almost too well, at times, lending an element of creepiness to the film. With right angle and the right lighting, you could almost believe that he is whom he is pretending to be...He even sounded like her, at least enough to really give me the heebee jeebees. And no, the real Ms. Spears does not appear in the film.
There are some very good extras available here, including a trailer for the film, a nice piece where Angel Benton relates his true life experience with winning the Britney impersonation contest and the subsequent events, and biographies of Angel Benton, Mark Borchardt, and Mike Shank.

This hilarious Christmas film tells the tale of a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa's bag of gifts on Christmas Eve and is transported back to the North Pole and raised as an elf. Years later Buddy learns he is not really an elf and goes on a journey to New York City to find his true identity.
Customer Reviews:
Elf. Very good movie. On the go........2006-01-02
I have recently received this as UMD(Universal Movie Disc) as a present. The picture quality on the PSP is that of a mini Plasma Television so this is definitely about the same picture quality if not all aspects of the DVD version of this movie. I watched the opening titles for it and the illustrations proved crystal clear. Some drawbacks include the 4" inch screen of the PSP, which seems generous enough but really feels overly contained. The fastforward button on the PSP headphones and the right trigger of the controller are both convenient to use while watching this. This product is good enough if you want to watch a movie on an airplane or in your car but it will never replace a home theator system because it isn't that inclusive. The screen of the PSP isn't very big, the sound quality is so so.
Conclusion
1)If you really want to have portable video games and the prospect of watching Hollywood movies on the go intrigues you this will suit your needs just fine
2)If you are a movie buff, I would recommend buying the DVD version of this movie because of the special features it includes, you are better off with a portable DVD player because the screen size will be much bigger and the sound quality will be greatly enhanced
3)and if you can afford to spring for a laptop you should do so because it will suit all of your portable needs including movies, music and internet.
Elf is a very funny and interesting movie. It is the kind of movie one can only watch a couple of times so buy it for PSP(UMD) format instead of for DVD because you will be entertained with it in those situations where you need to kill time such as on a flight, in an airport or in a doctor's waiting room.
