William Wyler and Bette Davis made their third and final collaboration their finest with this striking 1941 adaptation of Lillian Hellman's acidic play. The titular foxes are a particularly ravenous turn-of-the-century Southern moneyed clan, the Hubbards, and the most cunning of them all is sister Regina Giddens, the brilliant but ruthless woman played by Davis. In contrast to the manipulative Regina and her scheming brothers (Charles Dingle and Carl Benton Reid) is her guileless sister-in-law Birdie (Patricia Collinge in a delicately flighty performance) and her sickly, humanistic husband Horace (Herbert Marshall), whom she tolerates only for his money and position--until he stands in the way of a scheme that could bring her a fortune. Teresa Wright is the hope of the next generation as Regina's thoughtful daughter, Alexandra, who stands in marked contrast to her graceless, greedy cousin Leo (Dan Duryea). Wyler's longtime cameraman, Gregg Toland, fresh from his groundbreaking work on Citizen Kane, fills the film with amazing deep-focus compositions and razor-sharp images, showing off the grandly handsome mansion set in all its old-world splendor. But for all its beauty Wyler reveals it as a cold, lonely world ruled by a heartless woman. Excellent performances by all make Hellman's sharp dialogue glint like the edge of a knife, which ultimately cuts deep into the soul of this powerful classic. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Reviews:
Bette Davis at her cutting, take-no-prisoners best.......2007-08-01
Like so many other old Bette Davis classics, what's left to say about "The little Foxes"? Well, in the spirit of being helpful (as all these Amazon reviews aspire to be, right?), I'll only add this: if you're worried that you're going to get a genteel costume drama that is agreeably engaging at best, think again. The writing in this film is extremely biting, to the point, incisive, and even suspenseful... one waits for the latest vitriolic comeback, sarcastic observation, and tragic, knowing comment (often about one's own character or situation), as each memorbable piece of dialogue tops the last. I was initially going to type the words "great banter" when describing the verbal interplay in this movie, but the words "great" and "banter" sound too trivial for this purpose. What comes out of these people's mouths is more like deadly swordplay, with frequent bloody contact as razor-edged steel sneaks past opposing razor-edged steel. It's quite something. Now, is that helpful to those of you who initially didn't relish the notion of watching an old Bette Davis movie with the "cute" name, "The Little Foxes"?
The Little Foxes.......2007-06-25
Adapted from Lillian Hellman's Broadway smash, the third and final collaboration between William Wyler and leading lady Bette Davis, again playing a viper in petticoats, is a poisonous, effective drama set in the turn-of-the-century South. Davis was never so wicked, playing Regina to the icy hilt. A fabulous cast and authentic 1900s detail bring Hellman's loathsome characters to vivid life. Is this what they mean by Southern hospitality?
Classic.......2006-11-03
What is there to say? The film is brilliant, soaring above merely perfect Holywood to come as close as one can to the great American tragedy. Superb performances by everyone. Why spoil it for you with details; just watch it and be overwhelmed.
The Little Foxes.......2006-08-16
This was probably one of the few of Davis' movies that seemed to lead to a suspensful climax and then plopped to a disappointment and left one hanging waiting for an end and a conclusion that never came. When it said "The End", I couldn't believe it. Though it has been hailed on Broadway as a great play by Lillian Hellman, the ending was so abrupt that one has to wonder what the brothers did as retribution for the "blackmail" their sister was holding over their heads. It seemed like an unfinished plot. One assumes the mother and daughter's relationship has ended but one isn't sure and that could have been explored further. Davis gave her usual wonderful performance, as did the other actors, but I expected perhaps better writing of Hellman since the accolades for the book were so great. I was disappointed.
Another Bumpy Ride for Bette.......2006-07-19
Bette Davis is in fine form in one of her strongest roles. With a strong ensemble cast, "Tne Little Foxes" keeps the viewer on the edge of their chair, with a wonderful script by Lillian Hellman.
This is truely a classic Bette Davis vehicle that I can watch over and over again, because of the vicious Regina she creates.
If you think "All About Eve' was a bumpy ride, you haven't seen anything yet until you see "The Little Foxes."

The gang that created Airplane and The Naked Gun sets its sights on Top Gun in this often hilarious spoof starring Charlie Sheen, who previously only inspired laughs with his personal life. He plays Topper Harley, a fighter pilot with an ax to grind: clearing the family name. He gets involved in a relationship with Valerie Golino, a woman with an unusually talented stomach. But his mission is to avenge his father. Lloyd Bridges, late in his career, revealed an aptitude for this kind of silliness, here as a commander who is both incredibly dim and delightfully accident prone. Directed by Jim Abrahams, the film makes fun of a variety of other films as well, from Dances with Wolves to The Fabulous Baker Boys. It was so successful that they all returned in the sequel, Hot Shots! Part Deux. --Marshall Fine
Description
Recruited to join a top-secret mission for the Air Force, a renegade pilot (Sheen) finds himself coping with an incompetent admiral (Bridges) and a carefully-selected squadron of flyers who are either inept or half-blind. He also winds up in competition with the corps' model of military perfection (Elwes) for the heart of the base's sultry psychiatrist (Golino)
Customer Reviews:
Jim Abrams strikes again!.......2007-06-11
Lloyd Bridges found a new niche at the end of his career and it is a great one to have!! He is priceless in yet another Abrams spoof of Top Gun movies! Get the buttered popcorn and a mug of Coca Cola and get control of the remote! If you love the Abrams/Zucker spoofs, get this one too!!
Great money.... woops I mean it's Very funny.......2007-02-11
There are so many movies like Hot Shots, but this DVD is well worth the price. I would suggest everyone getting it. It's just a funny spoof of a whole bunch of movies. This Hot Shots movie is better then Hot Shots! Part Deux by the way.
Good, But Not As Enjoyable As Part Deux.......2006-03-28
This "Top Gun" spoof gets mixed emotions for me. Charlie Sheen, Cary Elwes and Lloyd Bridges are definitely the high points of the film, they are hilarious! So is this film, but towards the end during the last battle scene it gets dull. This is supposed to be a comedy, but they leave that for an almost serious battle sequence with just little gags thrown in every now and then. When you are laughing hard most of the time, you notice when the film drags. My personal favorite part is the wall eye vision. Overall, I really did enjoy this movie; it just started to drag a little towards the end, but picks up again right at the end
Hot Shots Revisited.......2006-03-10
Even though this movie came out several years ago as a spoof of "Top Gun" the humor is still current. Charlie Sheen is a great comedic actor even though he has played some emotionally charged dramatic roles quite well, as in "Platoon." To enjoy this movie fully you have to forget about reality and enjoy both the subtle humor as well as the slapstick. Interestingly, part of the movie involves an attack on Saddam Hussein. Who would've known!
What more could you want??.......2005-09-27
We start off with ace fighter pilot Topper Harley (Charlie Sheen) who originally got kicked out of the NAVY but is returning to help them save a mission, code name "Sleepy Weasel". Harley has his own problems like overcoming the death of his father and getting along with a snobby brown noser Kent Gregory (Cary Elwes). Adding to the confusion is Ramada Thompson (Valeria Golino),a beautiful shrink, who is Kent's girlfriend and Topper's love interest. They go head to head when Ramada & Topper's affection becomes obvious at the bar, and Kent declares war on Topper.
Among the other pilots is Pete "Dead Meat" Thompson (William O'Leary), Jim "Washout" Pfaffenbach, Kowalski (Kristy Swanson), Lt.Comm James Block (Kevin Dunn),and Admiral "Tug" Benson (Lloyd Bridges).
Topper & Kent is definatley NOT the only story going on here. There is the death of "Dead Meat", "Washout" struggling with wall-eye vision, a deceitful commander trying to abort the mission, and an incompetent admiral that doesn't know which you shoot: fish or duck.
But c'mon, you didn't really watch this movie to make sense out of it did you? You watched it for the same reason you watch any of Jim Abrahams movies-you want a good laugh!! And I guarantee you, you won't be disappointed! Don't try to analyze it. Just have a good time!!!

The sequel to the wonderfully wacky Hot Shots! uses Rambo as its model for nonstop send-ups (though director Jim Abrahams can't resist inserting a Saddam Hussein lookalike, given the film's post-Gulf War release). This time, Lloyd Bridges, who was an admiral in the first movie, has become president (take that, Colin Powell!) and needs someone to take care of the threat posed by a certain mustached Middle Eastern dictator. Who better than ever-reliable Topper Harley (Charlie Sheen)? In addition to trying to take out Saddam commando-style, Topper must juggle two women: Valerie Golino, from the original, and CIA babe Brenda Bakke, who knows a thing or two about close-quarters combat. If anything, this may be funnier than the first. --Marshall Fine
Description
In this hilarious "Hot Shots!" sequel, former renegade pilot Topper Harley (Charlie Sheen) is once again recruited for a secret mission. This time the country's incompetent president (Lyod Bridges) sends him to the Middle East to resue U.S. hostages and the countless men who have already been sent in to rescue them. Pining for his former lover (Valeria Golino) in a Buddhist temple, Topper manages to pull himself together and sets out on his laugh-laden, action-packed task.
Customer Reviews:
As silly as a Marx Brothers movie.......2006-07-04
While the Marx Brothers focuses less on sight gags and more on word play, this film reminds me of their films in many ways. It's an interesting comedy revolving around a military plot.
A terrorist dictator is holding many Americans hostage, and only one man can lead the way to save them. That man is Topper Harley, who no longer wants to be a part of any war. He only fights for show now, dipping his hands in ice cream toppings just before a contest.
Topper is somehow talked into the mission, and meets his girlfriend from the first movie along the way. She disguises herself as a man on a fishing boat to avoid being caught by patrol men on the river, but things erupt when she's seen entering the clearly marked women's restroom on the little boat.
Topper goes on a shooting spree, leaving a body count higher than that of both Robocop and total Recall, until Hot Shots Part Deux becomes the bloodiest movie EVER! Then the hostages are set free.
Topper rescues a tortured prisoner who can't walk because the terrorists tied his shoelaces together, and the good guys win after dropping a piano on the terrorist dictator.
Something ridiculous happens every 10 to 30 seconds in the film, so there's plenty here to keep anybody amused. There's also a scene where the president vomits on the lap of the Japanese Emperor. Look familiar?
I've never seen the first Hot Shots movie, but that in no way kept me from enjoying this great sequel. Completely absurd and highly recommended. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time.
Clever beyond words.......2006-05-31
Charlie Sheen returns for part 2 which is basically a send-up of Rambo with T2, Seahunt, Apocalypse Now and Kickboxer thrown in for good measure. Sheen's Topper Harley is brought in to rescue prisoners from Irag, including several other rescue parties that got captured trying to rescue the original prisoners. Lloyd Bridges is hilarious as the president who never quite knows what's going on. Sheen does a good Rambo impersonation and they have Richard Crenna playing the same father figure role he played in the Rambo movies. There are site gags galore and clever wordplay. So much goes on you have to watch it more than once to catch everything.
Greatest action spoof!!!!!!!.......2006-05-29

This movie is sweet. Very funny when your drunk. I would watch this movie everyday if i didnt passout from drinking at the stip clubs.

Charlie Sheen is impeccable in this film! Great script turned great movie; the spoof element is there (maybe not as strong as the first film,) but HS: Part Deux is funny; actually, its very funny if you enjoy this type of 'funny' that is.

The best streetball mixtape ever.......2006-05-12
I can't front, the dvd is sick. This streetball action is definitely poppin' right now. I didn't know how it has evolved into what it has become. I frequent Rucker Park all of the time so New York has always had it on lock. This dvd has shown otherwise. My favorite streetballers on this dvd are "I'll Be Right Back", "Swoal", "How High", "White Chocolate" and "Boogie". I think only one of the guys mentioned is from New York. I need to get out more and travel the country. This is crazy. When is the next tour date?
Hot Streetball Action.......2006-01-14
This is one of the best Streetball DVDs ever. It is action packed. The tricks are unreal. This is a must have for all streetball fans.
