5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-09-17

This film takes pieces of popular culture and twists them into a creative and hilarious film. Hot Fuzz easily ranks among my most favorite films.

4 out of 5 stars It takes swan to know swan . . ........2007-09-17

Simon Pegg is a hoot as Sergeant Nicholas Angel, a Metropolitan copper so good at his job, he makes everyone else look bad. He's transferred to the supposedly quiet village of Sandford, Gloucestershire as punishment for his success -- where, of course, he stumbles onto a series of murders made to look like accidents and can't get the local constabulary to take him seriously. But everything changes when he puts on the dark glasses and puts the hammer down. From there, it's an unbelievable mix of shoot-outs, car chases, slo-mo action, and numerous similar homages to the films of John Woo and others. It's unusual for a film to be successful as both a high-octane action flick AND a dryly hilarious comedy, but this one manages it.

5 out of 5 stars Magic!.......2007-09-16

When I lived in England in the late 70's a popular phrase for something that would work out just right was "Magic".
If you enjoy satire, and or British humor, and aren't offended by TERRIBLE language, then this is a fabulous send up of the "Action / Cop/ Buddy" genre of film.

If you enjoyed what these blokes did to the "Zombie" genre in "Shaun of the Dead" you should love this movie, which starts abit slower, but when it gets going... Magic!

5 out of 5 stars if there were 10 stars..........2007-09-15

This movie is terrific! seriuosly. you want a good laugh, a good mystery and a bit of gore, then this one is for you. I loved "Shauna of the Dead" so I was hoping for a good movie... but it is way better then that. FUNNY!

3 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-09-13

I was waiting to see this and it left me with a bad taste. The movie does have some good in it but I was expecting more. Some of the scenes were slow paced. A standard film.

5 out of 5 stars Details on the different versions of this DVD release.......2007-09-12

Loved the movie. That said, I was confused on what the differences were on the 3 DVD versions, but found some details that I've posted below. As for me, I'm going with this two-disc unrated version.

Basic extras -- available on all (both R-rated and Unrated Editions):

- Deleted and Extended Scenes
- Gag Reel
-"Directing the Director" (Capote director Bennett Miller stops by to help Apatow get the job done)
- Line-O-Rama (Tons of alternate takes)
- Audio commentary with Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen and Bill Hader
- Roller Coaster Featurette

Goodies available only on the Unrated releases:

- MORE Deleted and Extended Scenes (some pretty raunchy ones, reportedly)
- Topless Scene: "Web Design"

And finally, extras available only on this 2-disc Unrated version:

- Judd Apatow's Video Diaries
- Finding Ben Stone (A mock casting session)
- Stripper Confidential (Rogen and Paul Rudd wade through some Sin City salaciousness)
- Even MORE Deleted and Extended Scenes / Gag Reel Footage!
- Another topless Scene: "Restaurant"
- Katherine Hiegl's Audition Tape
.. "and more" (I'm really hoping for another "You know how I know you're gay?" extended scene like in 40-year-old Virgin)

4 out of 5 stars Many guys would run a mile.......2007-09-10

There are too many children being born into the world at the moment, where the mother, barely out of school herself, can't remember the name of the father. There are children being born who will never know their father, cos their mother had too much to drink to ask him to wear some protection. Or take her pill. Many boyfriends would run a mile and then keep running if their girlfriend turned round and said they were pregnant. Imagine what they would do if it was a one night stand who said they were pregnant?!

Here's a film that turns all that on its head. The girl who should have been out of his league, has a few too many and sleeps with the guy who has 'moobs' and a mop of curly hair. He thinks he's scored, they part ways. She discovers she's pregnant eight weeks later, just as she gets a promotion at work, hunts him down to tell him, and he agrees to stick by her, thankfully without asking the question that would get him a slap: "Is it mine?"

That's the basic premise of the movie, starring Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen in the lead roles. It's an absolutely brilliant movie, dealing with various relationship problems, sometimes a bit too much, as I found some scenes difficult to deal with. Maybe I was feeling a bit insecure that night, who knows? The bit where she threw him out the car in the middle of nowhere gave me shivers up my spine. A lot of the jokes about the roommate with the beard, and ever growing hair went straight over my head.

I never got into The 40 Year Old Virgin, so I can't really comment on the comparisons to that. I think I switched it off as I couldn't concentrate on it. But this definitely kept my attention, although it could have been cut down slightly, as it was overly long for a comedy, but only by about 15 minutes or so.

The supporting cast are absolutely terrific, and the cameos are also funny too. Look out for Ryan Seacrest playing a totally different 'character' to the one he plays on American Idol! Steve Carrell also makes a cameo, along with Jessica Simpson & Jessica Alba.

An 18 year old guy I work with also went to see this movie the same night I did, and we were discussing it the next day, and he admitted to being scared stiff at the birth scene at the end. Oh dear, that's the wool been lifted from his eyes! You do see EVERYTHING unfortunately, including a reflection in a mirror of a baby's head crowning. It's a fleeting glimpse, but enough to make me want to cross my legs!

Knocked Up is an excellent movie, about a true to life topic, and has a happy ending when it all works out. I think I was close to tears. I'll definitely pick up the DVD of this, and see if there's any good extras on it.

1 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment.......2007-09-02

Perhaps I'm too old for movies like this. Perhaps I should have known better - I gave up on 40 year virgin after 15 minutes. But the reviews were good so I watched it. The movie (to me) was utterly boring. I found little to laugh at, but perhaps the jokes belonged to a different culture. The characters were amiably pleasant but a bad situation was made worse by the continuous stream of bad language. Is this how young people talk nowadays - I doubt it.

1 out of 5 stars Dire .......2007-08-28

This aint no comedy. A foul mouthed tepid load of rubbish. Lazy drugged up slob impregnates drunken beauty queen. She obviously traumatised by the experience tries to bond with her childs father. But he is a lazy useless monosyllabic bore.

There is no chemistry between the leads, the main male character is particularly reprehensible, an introverted immature layabout. The script is terrible, not a single person laughed in the theatre I was in watching this dribble.

How any one could call this a comedy is beyond me, movie making at its worst, one of the most horrible theatre experiences of my life.

3 out of 5 stars When Homer met Marge, for adults.......2007-08-27

I thought the movie had some hilarious moments...but you have to remember one thing: It's only a movie!!!

In real life there would probably be some ugly consequences involved for constantly smoking pot, not having a job and sleeping with any bloke you meet in a club. Ie. you can end up a nutcase, get AIDS,become homeless on the street, etc.

But if you just watch it for what it is (a movie) then it can be really hilarious at times.

Hope this review helped.

Literary adaptations just don't get any better than director Joe Wright's 2005 version of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. The key word here is adaptation, because Wright and gifted screenwriter Deborah Moggach have taken liberties with Austen's classic novel that purists may find objectionable, but in this exquisite film their artistic decisions are entirely justified and exceptionally well executed. It's a more rural England that we see here, circa 1790 (as opposed to Austen's early 19th century), in which Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) is one of several sisters primed for marriage, with an anxious mother (Brenda Blethyn) only too desperate to see her daughters paired off with the finest, richest husbands available. Elizabeth is strong-willed and opinionated, but her head (not to mention her pride and prejudice) lead her heart astray when she meets the wealthy Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), whose own sense of decency and discretion (not to mention his pride and prejudice) prevent him from expressing his mutual affection. They're clearly meant for each other, and as Knightley's performance lights up the screen (still young enough to be girlishly impertinent, yet wise beyond her 20 years), Austen's timeless romance yields yet another timeless adaptation, easily on par with the beloved BBC miniseries that has been embraced by millions since originally broadcast in 1995. Individual tastes will vary as to which version should be considered "definitive," but with a stellar supporting cast including Judi Dench and Donald Sutherland, this impeccable production achieves its own kind of perfection. --Jeff Shannon

Description

One of the greatest love stories of all time, Pride & Prejudice, comes to the screen in a glorious new adaptation starring Keira Knightley. When Elizabeth Bennett (Knightley) meets the handsome Mr. Darcy (Matthew MacFadyen), she believes he is the last man on earth she could ever marry. But as their lives become intertwined in an unexpected adventure, she finds herself captivated by the very person she swore to loathe for all eternity. Based on the beloved masterpiece by Jane Austen, it is the classic tale of love and misunderstanding that sparkles with romance, wit and emotional force. Critics are calling it "Exhilarating. A joy from start to finish" (Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times).

4 out of 5 stars Good Introduction.......2007-09-16

When I first saw this movie, I had no expectations. I had never seen any other version of Pride and Prejudice, nor had I read the book. The visuals were stunning, the story was good, and although the acting was not perfect, it was good enough. I was impressed enough to look it up later and not only purchase this version, but also got the older, BBC version with Colin Firth.

Although I have since watched the BBC version multiple times and fallen in love with the story and the actors in that version...I can still look kindly upon this version. Although parts were missing and this story is nowhere near as in-depth as the BBC version or the book, and although I feel that Kiera Knightley is too charged (her emotions are all very extreme. She comes off as rude, angry, and overemotional to me.) and too self-conscious (again, with her overdone reactions to things...it makes her seem self-conscious and nervous.), I think this version is much more accessible to the public. People are more willing to sit down to a short movie filled with beautiful people than they are to begin the 5 hour of the BBC version or read "stuffy old novels". As well, despite the historical inaccuracies, the filming was well-done and I believe the story is as good as it could have been after being condensed into such a small package. While many would be angry that this movie isn't "as good" as the BBC version, I still think this movie is better than many others in the last few years.

However, I would highly recommend that anyone who watched and was impressed with this movie go out and rent the BBC version. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A new favorite.......2007-09-16

Having watched the movie, read the book and watched the movie again all in the same week I am pleased to say that the movie did the book justice; which is not a compliment I often bestow on such movies. Each actor was perfect in their representation and I will certainly enjoy watching this movie again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Loved even by a fan of the BBC version.......2007-09-15

i adore this film, and the BBC miniseries as well. This film is set when the book was written (Georgian England) not published (Victorian England), unlike the BBC version. The difference is seen not just in the costumes, but in the manner of communicating. In Georgian England, people were much more expressive. Hence, the film is less subtle (also neccessary for a 2-hour version!) than the miniseries. Give Macfayden a chance, he's no Colin Firth, but I think he communicates the "he's not a snob, he's just shy" aspect much better than Firth, who comes accross as simply arrogant for most of the BBC version.

1 out of 5 stars Am I the only one who think Knightley can't act?.......2007-09-09

Keira Knightley butchered what could have been a refreshing adaption to a beautiful story. Knightley appears oblivious to whom her character is. Again her constant posing and trying to be sexy by hanging her mouth open, is distracting and obnoxious.
And, once again, it falls to the other actors to carry her and fill in the gaps in her performance.
I dont' know what her agent had to pull to get her this role, but it's a waste of time, talent, and money. Only a miracle worker like Johnny Depp can cover for her like he did in "Pirates".

5 out of 5 stars Pride and Prejudice.......2007-09-06

I love this movie. Now I have heard that the BBC version is better and the characters are more developed, and they should be for a six hour production. I would like to see that rendition some day soon. I have read the book twice so far and love it. However, I am a mom of four year old twins and I don't have 6 hours to watch a DVD right now. I think the Keira Knightley Pride and Prejudice is very well done. They did not butcher the book at all like some do. I give it five stars. It's absolutely delightful!

A delightful undersea world unfolds in Pixar's animated adventure Finding Nemo. When his son Nemo is captured by a scuba-diver, a nervous-nellie clownfish named Marlin (voiced by Albert Brooks) sets off into the vast--and astonishingly detailed--ocean to find him. Along the way he hooks up with a scatterbrained blue tang fish named Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), who's both helpful and a hindrance, sometimes at the same time. Faced with sharks, deep-sea anglers, fields of poisonous jellyfish, sea turtles, pelicans, and much more, Marlin rises above his neuroses in this wonderfully funny and nonstop thrill ride--rarely does more than 10 minutes pass without a sequence destined to become a theme park attraction. Pixar continues its run of impeccable artistic and economic success (their movies include Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, and Monsters, Inc). Also featuring the voices of Willem Dafoe, Geoffrey Rush, and Allison Janney. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars wonderful story for kids and adults..........2007-09-06

This is one of my favorite animated pictures I've ever seen and I've seen it over a hundred times. There was a time when all my kids ever wanted to watch was NEMO! The animation is riveting, the characters are unforgettable, the story is beautiful and the humor is marvelous for kids and adults and never crosses the line. What I loved about this was it fell into line with what you would expect from fish and all the other creatures that you come across and never crossed a line into absurd or in tongue, sarcastic humor like some other fish movies I've seen. A fathers love is so strong for his son drives this film and in what has to be the funniest supporting fish, um..actress in an animated film I've ever seen. Ellen DeGeneres as Dory is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars great for kids and grown up.......2007-07-29

I love all the Disney classics, and for years I didn't want to see this movie thinking it wasn't the "real deal". Well.... I was wrong! It might be different, but is a great movie..... The story, the colors, the pictures... everything is Disney quality. My little girl, now almost 3 years old, has been watching it for 6 months now, sometimes up to 3 times a day, and never gets tired. And I have to say that I watch it with her most of the times....

2 out of 5 stars Why does any story have to start with the death of the parent?.......2007-07-24

My kids really didn't need that. If you feel that way too... try some of the Pippi movies.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Pixar.......2007-07-09

Pixar has created amazing movies, and this has to be their best. Stunning scenes, capturing the beauty of the world of coral reefs, along with the mystery of the oceans. Great story and humor.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BE CORRUPTED BY THIS MOVIE!!!.......2007-06-05

The movie was a little boring and looked really fake. You could tell it wasn't real and was just a bunch of silly puppets. I hope the kids that watch it don't really think fish can talk. Most of the movie is scientifically inaccurate. At one point there are a lot of "baby" fish. These fish appear, no, not as fry or something else that makes sense, but as slightly smaller versions of the adult. After this, these "baby" fish climb onto the back of a stingray (a predatory animal that should be eating them" who is their "teacher" he swims around and sings songs while the "baby" fish ride on his back. Other associations appear in this movie that I doubt have ever been observed in the wild. At one point, a clown fish is talking to a seahorse and an octopus, two of which only associate with their own kind, and one of which will kill anything to get within several feet of it! Does this happen in the movie? NO!

However, what I find most disturbing is not the numerous scientific inaccuracies, but the fact that most people that view this movie regard it as a documentary on ocean life. I have seen kids at the aquarium pointing at fish and referring to them as a "Nemo" or a "Dori".

Anyway, the stingray teacher manages to lose the baby clown fish (big surprise, what do you expect with a stingray for a teacher, you're lucky he didn't eat the kid!). And the clown fish gets captured and put into an aquarium in a dentists office with, yes more talking fish, but just wait! In this tank, there are also talking shrimp, and even a talking Starfish.

OK, now talking fish is one thing. They may not have lungs or vocal chords to produce speech, and not even close to sufficient cognitive function, but at least they're vertebrates! But having an animal without even a brain talking!? That's just ridiculous! And speaking the same language as the fish!

Now, yes, there have been strange things in Disney movies before. In Alice in wonderland there are talking flowers, and even a talking slug that smokes opium. However, Alice in Wonderland is the delusion of a madman, and does not take place in the natural world. Hence the name "Wonderland". However, does Finding Nemo take place in "Wonderland"? NO! It takes place in the Great Barrier reed, just outside Australia! Did the maker think "Well, nobody that watches this movie has been to Australia, so they won't know that the fish don't talk there"? I don't know what he was thinking, but I wasn't fooled! I personally have been to Australia, and the fish do NOT talk there! this movie makes no sense and is in no way entertaining.

After that, the fish attempt to make their tank dirty by clogging the filter, in which they succeed. However, the maker of this film has obviously never kept saltwater fish before. If he had, he would realise that after living without a filter for more than an hour, every fish in the tank would be dead. Does this happen? NO! The tank just gets really dirty and the fish remain just as alive as ever! I couldn't take it any more. I walked out of the theater after that.

Do not regard this movie as factual! Do not take your children to see this movie! This is one of the WORST places to get information about fish. Do not be fooled by this movie or the numerous other positive reviews!

5 out of 5 stars Filthy minded? Yup. Infantile? Yup. Funny as hell? Absofrigginlutely!.......2007-09-10

With this film, I just became a Seth Rogen fan. Just right now, I did. I've been peripherally aware of this guy, having seen him in miniscule parts in ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY, YOU, ME & DUPREE, and, most notably, THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN. But, here in KNOCKED UP, he takes lead actor honors and he's simply awesome. Yes, see this movie for the other actors, as well - Katherine Heigl, Paul Rudd, and Leslie Mann all shine - but, in my eyes, this is a cinematic coming out party for Seth Rogen. And, if nothing else, this chubby guy gives hope to uncool, unhandsome, just plain folks like me.

This is the story of Ben and Alison. Ben (Seth Rogen) is a laid-back, unemployed teddy bear of a guy who whiles away his time smoking weed and, with his slacker buddies, striving to construct a celebrity skin website (these guys are obviously unaware of the online site Mr. Skin, already in place). In a club, he bumps into way-out-of-his-league Alison (Katherine Heigl), a gorgeous career girl celebrating a promotion. Booze is poured, sparks are ignited, and Alison and Ben hook up. As sometimes happen, the next morning opens with hangovers and regrets and a butt-crack. Alison gets a good sober look at Ben, who then doesn't help his case by throwing up and then championing the merits of post-drunk vomiting. Disgusted, Alison departs, with Ben knowing he goofed and philosophically assuming that that was that. But, 8 weeks later, Ben hears from Alison, who drops the news that she's expecting. And, because Ben is innately a good guy and Alison a fairly open-minded girl who doesn't want to do this alone, they make a go of being together.

This flick is a cheerful, very funny 2-hours-plus worth of sit down time. It definitely offers more than its ANIMAL HOUSE tendencies would have you initially believe. My gut feeling is that the folks involved in the making of this film had true affection for it, especially Director/Writer Judd Apatow. KNOCKED UP lays down consistent humor foraying into occasional bawdiness. I must admit that the film startled me with its display of genuine emotion and heart. I was prepared to be content with cardboard people and cheap laughs. Instead, underneath the crass trimmings, the unaffected, heartfelt core of the film surfaced and made me invest in the characters beyond a superficial level. I really liked the characters. Too, the rampant crudity and lewdness are balanced out by a humorous yet sensitive depiction of a marriage quietly on the rocks. With all the insights given, it actually feels like a real marriage.

Alison's older sister Debbie and Pete have been married for a while now and are raising two beautiful daughters. But life isn't like the movies, and Debbie and Pete, well-meaning people both, have problems. Debbie as played with delirious, high-strung brittleness by Leslie Mann is one of those pushy, righteous people who eventually gets under your skin, but she's not a bad person. Paul Rudd is comic gold as Pete, the fount of masterfully sly and dry comments, who can mostly tolerate Debbie's harangues but only if he gets the occasional alone time. Their not-quite-rosy relationship is plentifully plumbed, giving rise to spousal suspicions and bickerings and possibly previewing what the future holds for Alison and Ben. Too, Alison and Ben end up choosing sides as Alison is strictly with her sister while Ben espouses Pete's side. This puts a decided crimp in their own relationship.

Of course, this movie hinges on the leads' ability to generate interest and invoke sympathy from the viewer. And, let's face it, who wouldn't want Ben Stone for a buddy? Or Seth Rogen, for that matter? Ben is so good natured and easy going that I challenge anyone to not root for him and his maturation process. One of my favorite scenes is when he finally confronts Debbie. His chemistry with Heigl is apparent on screen; I can actually see this smoking hot girl being pals with and then falling for the prospectless, chubby but appealing loser, although, naturally, beer and possibly many shots of tequilla would have to be involved. Katherine Heigl had already turned my head with her performances in ROSWELL and THE RINGER. Here, much respect goes to Katherine as she shrugs off dignity and dives right into the thick of things. But, you know what, even when ignominiously suffering thru morning sickness, throwing hormonal hissy fits, or giving alarmingly painful birth, she maintains her full babefulness. As Alison, she comes across as an authentic person with an array of valid fears and insecurities. Katherine Heigl's good. And smoking hot.

The supporting players sparkle. Credit as a whole goes to Ben's insult-tossing cast of nowhere-headed pals, who may be hapless but are there for Ben. Two standouts are Ken Jeong as the strict and precise Asian doctor and SNL-er Kristen Wiig as some sort of network executive, she of the snide and off-the-wall verbal asides ("This is Hollywood. We don't like liars."). Because Alison works for the E! network, we're treated to several cameos of famous folks playing themselves. Ryan Seacrest's lampooning of himself is a blast and it makes me like him a bit better.

I like to laugh and KNOCKED UP doled out laughter in multiple servings. Much of the humor is of the juvenile sort as a sizable chunk of the film is dedicated to the slacker amigos mercilessly bagging on each other. Your enjoyment of these jokes will depend on your pop-culture I.Q. (for example, do you know who Serpico is?). One guy who undertakes a shaving bet is incessantly strafed with facial hair insults ("Scorcese on coke" "Your face is like Robin William's knuckles."). Be advised that there are moments here of THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY or AMERICAN PIE proportions. But, in the midst of the pot humor, the DeNiro impressions, and the scatalogical stuff, let me reiterate that there's an unfeigned sweetness and moments of honest soul searching which resonate clearly, and, gullible goofball that I am, I was charmed. Don't be fooled by the raunchy and "modern" conventions here; this film is firmly centered on family values. Ben Stone might be an adult at 23 years old, but this is still a coming of age story. And, yes, he does grow up here.

In his first lead role, Seth Rogen emerges as the genial, scruffy heart of the film. Now that he has it, here's hoping he can sustain his leading man status. If the ungainly Jack Black can do it, why not Seth, who's more lovable and cuddly? But there are other actors in the film. Heigl, Rudd, and Mann do great being witty and poignant, argumentative and loving, and real. KNOCKED UP allows both genders to have their moments. In terms of who's funny, Rogen and Rudd definitely come through, but Heigl and especially Mann deliver their ample share of levity. Just wait for the scene with the stressed Debbie having a brutal yet uproarious conversation with the nightclub doorman. The movie also has that something which lesser films would kill for, which is rapport among its stars. Chemistry abounds, between Rogen and Heigl, between Mann and Rudd, and between Rogen and Rudd. So, yeah, there are all sorts of reasons to go see KNOCKED UP. The fellas can latch onto the dirty, smutty humor and the smoking hot babes; for the girls, there are the pregnancy arc and the nice, unforced romance, as well as the sibling relationship of Alison and Debbie. Oh, and, apparently, Paul Rudd is a clever hunk and Seth Rogen is immensely huggable. But, me, I saw this to learn the dice move. I'm building up my dance repertoire.

4 out of 5 stars Knocked Up.......2007-09-08

You could throw a rock at a video shop and hit a movie about the joys of parenting, but very few of those gooey family flicks deal with the actual business of making the baby. That's where Knocked Up comes in. Delving fearlessly beneath the duvet of taboo, Judd Apatow's superb comedy follows the relationship between slobby stoner Ben (Seth Rogen) and go-getting TV exec Alison (Katharine Heigl) from a drunken one-night-stand to nursery shopping and labour pains.

Apatow is best known for his rollicking sex farce The 40 Year Old Virgin, but Knocked Up is pitched at a considerably lower key. While the subject matter is bawdy and the language extremely saucy, most of the laughs (and there are lots of them) spring from conversations rather than gross-out set pieces. Rogen's likeable slacker and his no-hoper pals can discuss the finer points of celebrity nudity until your eyes are watering, while on the other side of the partnership, Alison's sister (Leslie Mann) and her husband (Paul Rudd) provide a spot-on portrait of an arid marriage.

"YOU'LL BE SNORTING POPCORN OUT OF YOUR NOSE"

Like its central character's life, Knocked Up has a messy story, but one imbued with such sweetness that it's impossible not to love. It's a romance with the cutest of twists - imagine if Romeo and Juliet had nine months to fall in love before Julie Jr arrived - told with the laconic charm of a good stand-up routine and laced with moments of genuine insight. It's an adult comedy - not smutty (well OK, it is kinda smutty) but a comedy for and about adults. Most importantly, it's so funny that you'll be snorting popcorn out of your nose before the end.

5 out of 5 stars Something for everyone.......2007-08-27

In the movie Knocked Up, Katherine Heigl plays Alison Scott, a twenty-something career gal who has just been promoted to an on-air position with E! Entertainment Television. The day she receives her promotion Alison goes out to celebrate with her older sister, Debbie, at a nightclub. It's there that she meets Ben, an unmotivated pothead who lives with four roommates and doesn't have a job "per se." Ben and his roommates are working on creating a Web site that will allow you to search for your favorite actress's nude scenes. When Ben and Allison meet, even though she's gorgeous and he's a pudgy, hairy mess, there's something about his personality and charm that wins her over. Eventually they wind up back at her place and you can guess from the title what happens next.

Knocked Up is the story of the way that Alison and Ben have to navigate an unplanned pregnancy and what it will mean for their individual futures, the future of their unborn child, and their collective relationship. It goes over every aspect of an unplanned pregnancy: do we or don't we have it?, what's going to happen to my career?, is this the right person for me? All of these questions are tackled in an honest and humorous fashion. And, even if you aren't into it for the pregnancy angle, there's so much more to the movie. Alison's sister has been married with children for a few years and feels that her relationship is stagnating. Her husband, played by Paul Rudd, is in no such rut and instead manages to be completely oblivious to his wife's concerns. Ben's roommates, also unmotivated potheads, have to figure out what to do if their planned celebrity sex scene Web site doesn't pan out the way they'd planned. As a whole, Knocked Up was just an all around interesting and multifaceted romantic comedy. And it doesn't hurt that the movie was downright hilarious.

Knocked Up is the sort of movie you can see with a friend, family member, or significant other and everyone will have something to laugh about. I can't remember the last time I was at a movie where every seat was filled and everyone laughed pretty much the whole time. It's definitely going to top the list of one of the funniest movies of the summer.

4 out of 5 stars The latest odd couple.......2007-08-26

I never did like that Paul Anka song, but it came to mind when watching this movie.

Havin' a baby
What a perfect way of proving
When you've been easy
Havin' a baby
What a simple way of knowing
You were drunk and crazy
I can see it, nausea's growing
I can see it in your eyes
You're not happy to know it
That you're havin' a baby.

Yep, as the title of the movie will confirm, one night of drunken partying can lead to a barely remembered episode of making unprotected whoopee, which in turn can lead to the predicament of Alison Scott (Katherine Heigl of Grey's Anatomy).

Recently promoted at work, Alison hopes that the camera will hide the pounds she's beginning to pack as she tries to deal with the new developments in her life. Unfortunately, the father-to-be (Seth Rogen) isn't exactly ideal family material, being a stranger to details like work and responsibility, but to his credit he doesn't break the record for the 100 meter sprint and tries to do the right thing.

They have so little in common that it's a wonder that the little cells managed to get together in the first place, but then again, Alison's sister (Leslie Mann) and her husband (Paul Rudd) aren't doing so great either.

Funny in places, but long and drawn out in others, this could have been a really good one hour sitcom episode, but at more than two hours, you may experience birthing pains before the credits begin to roll.

Rated 3.5 stars

(Note: Profanity laden, with adult situations, and may be traumatic to people who are pregnant for the first time.)

5 out of 5 stars One of the Year's Best! - No Really!.......2007-08-20

"Knocked Up" is truely one of those films that creeps up from behind you and really surprises you in every sense of the word. What could have easily been a dumb, forgettable, raunchy sex-comedy turns out to be a smart, memorable, raunchy sex/romantic comedy. It's a well balanced high wire act of potty mouthed humor and "cute" elements that is pulled off brilliantly by the writing and direction of Judd Apatow as well as the acting from actors Seth Rogen, Katherine Heigl, Paul Rudd, and the under appreciated Leslie Mann (not to exclude the supporting roles from Jonah Hill, Jason Sigel, and a few other "Freaks and Geeks"/"Undeclared" alumni).
"Knocked Up" is a pretty simple story, a likable under achiever/slacker/stoner/unemployed goof has a one night stand with a gorgeous woman who was drunk celebrating a promotion she earned at work. The couple's hot night turns out to be a nine week "getting to know you and your friends" bit before the baby pops out. Of course there are moments where the boy must grow up which is truely what the film is about. The running time is 129 minutes which may be a little too long for some but honestly, I hardly noticed it and I've seen this in the theater twice! From start to finish Apatow pulls the audience in with his great sense of humor and scene after scene the laughs keep rolling in til the end just as fresh as the begining.
Though "Knocked Up" is pretty fowl mouthed, (the "F" word is thrown around a lot as well as a whole avalanche of naughty words) the film has the amazing ability to become extremely sensitive and even sweet. I love that! In fact, "Knocked Up" is surprisingly my favorite film of 2006 by far!

The ever-popular Ernest Borgnine, one of the all-time great "regular guy" stars, anchored McHale's Navy, a cheerful, rambunctious '60s sitcom set in the South Pacific during World War II. By its second season, the show had perfected its formula (a formula already lifted wholesale from The Phil Silvers Show): Lt. Commander McHale (Borgnine) and the scrappy crew of his PT boat (including Tim Conway, later of The Carol Burnett Show, as bumbling Ensign Parker and Gavin MacLeod, later to helm The Love Boat, as seaman "Happy" Haines) scheme, swindle, and romance their way through the war, avoiding the enemy whenever possible, and making life miserable for their petty, tyrannical commanding officer, Capt. Binghamton (Joe Flynn, later to appear in numerous Disney live-action movies like The Love Bug and The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes). Though some episodes reflected real world issues of the 1960s (for example, Ensign Parker feels less of a man when a pretty nurse turns out to be better than him at pretty much everything), by and large the show existed in a bubble of slapstick and classic vaudeville schtick--and the show's fans wouldn't want it any other way. Despite the backdrop of WWII, McHale's Navy aimed young. McHale and his crew are basically a gang of rascally kids getting away with pranks and defying the adult authority figures around them. Though the guys routinely pursue nurses, their "dates" amount to little more than stolen kisses and light petting--compared to the leering Hogan's Heroes, McHale's Navy is strangely prepubescent. Of course, this innocence is much of the show's charm, and makes the occasional Asian and Pacific Islander stereotypes a little easier to take (though it's worth noting that the Japanese characters on the show were always played by Japanese actors, something not common at the time). In addition to the original 36 episodes aired in 1963-64, McHale's Navy: Season Two features brief interviews with Borgnine and Conway (regrettably, Flynn died in 1974). The fairly bland Borgnine interview has at least one good anecdote, but the Conway interview is charming throughout. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Colour or colourised?.......2007-08-17

I LOVE McHale's Navy! However, I don't recall any episodes of the television series being in colour? Was season 2 shot in colour, or has this season been colourised for the DVD release?
Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Applause for Shout! Factory quality transfers.......2007-07-31

I picked up the first season of the series because I had never seen it but had enjoyed seeing the McHale's Navy movies time after time in syndication while growing up. The series started a little slowly (I guess they all do, though, with the actors finding their characters...), but after the fourth episode I didn't see Tim Conway, Earnest Borgnine, or any of the actors anymore. Instead I saw Ensign Parker, Quentin McHale, Gruber, Christy, Tinker, Vern, and all the rest of them. The sweet art of farce is certainly missing from much of today's TV (except for perhaps Arrested Development and one or two other notable modern comedies) and it was nice to sit back and laugh at some good old fashioned schtick!

I panicked a little when I realized that, after zipping through four of the five discs, I had only one DVD of joy left before I ran out of episodes. I hadn't realized that the 1st season set I'd picked up was the ONLY season released thus far!!! For the last few months I've been doing random searches for "McHale's Navy" in hopes that news would break that the second season would be released soon. What a relief that the next season will soon be out!

Shout Factory's transfers of these episodes are among the most clear and defined I have seen. I have a CRT projector tv that creates a 96" diagonal picture (fed by a VGA video cable from a HTPC) and as far as I could see, there was NO grain, no washed out areas, and quite a range of brightness in the images. I'm sure Shout did some luminance and contrast correction on the digital files after the transfer. What is really nice, however, is that they seem to have used a light touch and done just enough to sharpen the image without going overboard with filters or superfluous manipulations.

In short, I have loved every episode of every disc of the first season. It has nearly killed me to ration my viewing of new episodes to one a week or one every two weeks in order to draw out the pleasure of the newness until the next season is released (I still have not viewed the last two episodes...but have nearly gone mad!). Rest assured, however, I will be in line to be the first to get the Season Two set and every set that Shout Factory releases thereafter!

5 out of 5 stars "McHale And His Pirates" Return For Season Two!.......2007-07-16

Climb aboard and set a course for laughter as Lt. Commander McHale and the crew of PT 73 return with 36 more light-hearted romp on the Pacific episodes in McHale's Navy - Season Two!

Still at odds with authority, skipper McHale (Ernest Borgnine), Ensign Parker (Tim Conway), and the fun-lovin' crew of PT 73 continue to oppose blustery Capt. Binghamton (Joe Flynn) and his jittery aide Lt. Carpenter (Bob Hastings) with hilarious results. Whether helping one friend get a letter out to his girl from a Japanese compound ("A Letter for Fuji") or helping another to hear his child say her first words via ham radio using a confiscated enemy radio ("A Da-Da For Christy"), the team work and comraderie McHale and his men display in the episodes remain among my favorite aspects of the show.

Joining in on the schemes and hijinks this season in a recurring role is Ernest Borgnine's Dirty Dozen co-star George Kennedy as Big Frenchy, an old acquaintaince of McHale who gives the crew a run for their money when it comes to running cons. Other guest stars include Ted Knight (The Mary Tyler Moore Show), Arte Johnson (Laugh-In), Allan Melvin (The Brady Bunch), Olan Soule (The Adventures of Batman with Robin the Boy Wonder), and Mike Farrell of TV's other long-running military comedy M*A*S*H.

Digitally restored and remastered by Shout! Factory, McHale's Navy - Season Two is a 5-disc (930 min.) set featuring all 36 episodes in Full Frame (1.33:1) video and English mono, plus the following Special Features: "Ernest Borgnine Remembers" and "Tim Conway Remembers" - Featurettes have the actors reflecting on their roles in McHale's Navy and looking back at the real-life military careers that inspired their characters. You can only imagine the truth.

World-premiering as the opening-night film at the 2007 Venice International Film Festival. Joe Wright, the BAFTA Award-winning director of "Pride & Prejudice," has reunited with his filmmaking team and his Academy Award-nominated actress, Keira Knightley, for another classic British romance, starring James McAvoy (BAFTA Award nominee for "The Last King of Scotland") opposite Ms. Knightley. Christopher Hampton (Academy Award winner for "Dangerous Liaisons") has written the screenplay adaptation of Ian McEwan's best-selling 2002 novel Atonement. Shot on location in the U.K., the film's story spans several decades. In 1935, 13-year-old fledgling writer Briony Tallis (Saoirse Ronan) and her family live a life of wealth and privilege in their enormous mansion. On the warmest day of the year, the country estate takes on an unsettling hothouse atmosphere, stoking Briony's vivid imagination. Robbie Turner (Mr. McAvoy), the educated son of the family's housekeeper, carries a torch for Briony's headstrong older sister Cecilia (Ms. Knightley). Cecilia, he hopes, has comparable feelings; all it will take is one spark for this relationship to combust. When it does, Briony - who has a crush on Robbie - is compelled to interfere, going so far as accusing Robbie of a crime he did not commit. Cecilia and Robbie declare their love for each other, but he is arrested - and with Briony bearing false witness, the course of three lives is changed forever. Briony continues to seek forgiveness for her childhood misdeed. Through a terrible and courageous act of imagination, she finds the path to her uncertain atonement, and to an understanding of the power of enduring love.

4 out of 5 stars Magical Tingles.......2007-09-09

Starting a romance film with a group of unlikeable characters is not the best way to start a love story for me. Still it was shortly afterwards, that the story became interesting.

Based on the novel of the same name by British writer Ian McEwan and set just before and during the Second World War, Atonement stars Keira Knightley of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and James McAvoy of The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe. Yet despite Knightley and McAvoy receiving top billing, this is not their characters' story. The story belongs to the character of Briony Tallas who we ultimately see at three points in her life. At the age of 13 and in a wonderfully bitchy performance by young actress Saoirse Ronan, Briony is a girl who has a crush on Robbie Turner (McAvoy) and is jealous of his attraction to her older sister Cecilia. It is this jealousy that leads to the splitting apart of our lovers due to one big lie. And although the performance of Saoirse Ronan will be the most memorable Briony, for me the most interesting part of the story is the journey of Briony at age 18 (played by the beautiful Romola Garai of Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights) as she begins her atonement. It isn't until we see a much older Briony (played by acting legend Vanessa Redgrave) however that revelations are revealed and the complete truth is told.

If you're expecting a period drama for the whole family you probably won't find it with Atonement. This is due to the vulgar use of sexual language and the graphic grotesqueness of War. However for a few older members of the family they won't find anything they haven't heard of or seen before.

All in all, despite the high calibre acting from the cast, for me the majority of the movie moves forward at a 2 and a 1/2 out of 5 star movie pace, then when Briony is 18 much later on in the film it steps up to being a 3 and a 1/2 star movie. Thankfully when it comes to the final truth the movie becomes a 4 star movie due to a wonderfully special moment- There are some movies and TV shows in which a climactic sudden emotional reveal can spread magical tingles down your spine, and as Atonement progressed I did not expect to be getting that feeling at the end, but I did and I am so happy about that. And that was when the movie reached its peak, and where to better put the movie's peak than at the end.

5 out of 5 stars spellbinding.......2007-09-07

Ian McEwan, one of my very favorite authors, had me mesmerized by his detailed characters and all of their interplay in Atonement. The movie promises to be as delicious. I am fascinated by how much the actors look as I had imagined them as I read the book.

Atonement is my favorite novel, and it looks like it's been beautifully realized on screen. I'll be there December 7th!

The Academy Award winner for Best Picture, Best Director Robert Zemeckis, and Best Actor Tom Hanks, this unlikely story of a slow-witted but good-hearted man somehow at the center of the pivotal events of the 20th century is a funny and heartwarming epic. Hanks plays the title character, a shy Southern boy in love with his childhood best friend (Robin Wright) who finds that his ability to run fast takes him places. As an All-Star football player he meets John F. Kennedy; as a soldier in Vietnam he's a war hero; and as a world champion Ping-Pong player he's hailed by Richard Nixon. Becoming a successful shrimp-boat captain, he still yearns for the love of his life, who takes a quite different and much sadder path in life. The visual effects incorporating Hanks into existing newsreel footage is both funny and impressive, but the heart of the film lies in its sweet love story and in the triumphant performance of Hanks as an unassuming soul who savors the most from his life and times. --Robert Lane

5 out of 5 stars Numersous Secrets to Success are Shown in "Forrest Gump".......2007-09-14

Year of release: 1994
Writers: Winston Groom (who wrote the novel) and Eric Roth
Director: Robert Zemeckis
Runtime: 2 hours 22 minutes

I haven't seen this film for about 7 years or so. Seeing it again I was reminded why this is one of my all-time favorite pictures.

THE PLOT: Tom Hanks plays Forrest Gump, a mildly retarded Alabaman who brushes shoulders with the key figures and events of the 50s through the early 80s. Due to hard work, focus and uncommon wisdom he is hugely successful at whatever he does (running, war hero, ping pong, shrimp fishing). Meanwhile, the one woman he loves in all the world, Jenny (Robin Wright Penn), flounders through life hopelessly trying to find fulfillment in the drug culture with all the wrong people.

"Forrest Gump" is hugely entertaining on every level. It's a drama that skillfully includes both lighter, comedic moments and serious, tragic elements. If you've never seen it, don't think for a second that this is some average romantic comedy or goofball comedy. Far from it. I don't watch the Acadamy Awards or give any creedance to their judgment ("American Beauty," best picture? Please) but "Forrest Gump" is one instance where they were absolutely right in regard to the Best Picture award.

Some have criticized the film as an imbecilic fantasy, arguing that a simpleton like Gump would never become successful. It's true that the picture exagerates Forrest's successes and experiences, and in that sense it's not realistic, but the film plainly reveals WHY he experienced continued success throughout his life. We can all learn from these little gems of wisdom:

-- Whatever your I.Q., zero in on the areas for which you have a real talant.

-- Focus on those gifts and master them. In other words, don't be a jack of all trades. This is in line with the Russian proverb: "If you chase 8 rabbits you'll catch none."

-- Mastering your talants will take HARD WORK (which explains why lazy people are never wealthy, unless they inherit it).

-- Whatever you do, do it WITH ALL YOUR HEART.

-- Love deeply and cultivate deep loyalties (e.g. Jenny, Bubba & Lt. Dan). Loyalty is underrated.

-- Be patient and slow to judge (unless someone abuses another person).

-- Allow others the freedom to choose and make mistakes, even if it seems like it takes forever for them to learn from them.

-- If something or someone STINKS, reject it and stay away from it (remember the prostitute?).

-- Keep your word.

-- Pray and have FAITH.

-- Keep a humble spirit no matter how successful or great you become.

We can also learn lessons from Jenny: Trying to attain fulfillment through loose sex and foreign substances is a LOST cause. Recognize and embrace those who have your best interests in mind (i.e. those who truly love you and are loyal to you); stay away from people who use and abuse you.

From Lt. Dan (Gary Sinise) we learn a potent lesson about struggling with God to find true peace, success and reconciliation. Dan's all-out fight with God on the shrimp boat in the storm is potent and REAL. The great men and women of the bible experienced intense struggles with God: Most of the book of Job shows Job arguing with the Almighty and wanting to put Him on trial for crimes against humanity (!!); When God finally answers him Job falls to his face in humility and reverence. Jacob fought with God all night; the next day the Lord changed his name to Israel, which means "struggles with God" (Genesis 32:22-30). Also, remember Jesus' struggle with God and His will in the Garden of Gethsemane?

Another thing we can learn from Lt. Dan is that he was able to recognize a "golden connection" in Forrest. No one makes it alone, no one. They had help. Despite Forrest's lack of academic smarts, Dan recognized his wisdom and greatness; it attracted him and he respected it. Because of his link to Gump he became hugely successful. Remember: "One day of favor is worth a lifetime of labor."

Late in the film you'll see Lt. Dan and his Asian fiance at Gump's wedding. Note how Dan LOOKS at Forrest when they greet each other. Dan shows the utmost love and respect for Gump and is in utter awe of his simple-minded greatness. (This is great acting on Sinise's part).

"Forrest Gump" is a film gem to be RELISHED on many levels. Not only will you be incredibly entertained, you may learn a thing or two.

5 out of 5 stars Forrest Gump DVD.......2007-09-04

Another Classic Movie worth watching over many times. My old VHS needed some updating.

5 out of 5 stars The American Dream meets the American Nightmare.......2007-08-10

Two people, Forrest Gump and Jenny Curran, form an unbreakable bond as children. Forrest, although lacking in the brains department, manages to witness and play his part in some of the greatest events in American history. He meets JFK, wins the Medal of Honor in Vietnam, and manages to accidentally start the Watergate investigation. Forrest lives the American dream whereas Jenny lives the American nightmare; she has an abusive father and grows up to have a string of abusive boyfriends, works as a stripper, takes narcotics and ultimately contracts AIDS. Despite the pair going in completely different directions in life, they are still drawn to each other and Forrest and Jenny's story is one that will make you smile, laugh and shed a tear.

Every once and while, you see lists of the worst films to win Best Picture Oscars, and usually Forrest Gump makes that list. I think the reason for this is that we live in quite a cynical world and the majority of people do not really warm to lead characters that are innocent and pure of heart. This should not be the case. We should adore characters that are completely honest and very insightful despite their low IQs, and Forrest Gump is one of those characters that we should love. People who watch this film should check their cynicism at the door and just enjoy a film that is about the everyman battling the world using only truth and a deep-seated sense of what he believes is right. After all, this film has a noble tradition, it follows in the footsteps of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It's A Wonderful Life. If Frank Capra were alive today, he would make films like Forrest Gump (if he could come to grips with all the CGI) and that's all I have to say about that...

2 out of 5 stars didn't really get it.......2007-07-12

when this came on tv a few weeks ago, i was excited to watch it b/c i knew it was an acclaimed movie, everyone loved it and it won oscars. i was shocked to find that it was just an ordinary movie. it was actually boring. i don't get the hype about this movie. it was a bit sad, and i was on the brink of tears, and tom hanks wasn't that bad in it, but i think it is not at all what people say it is. this is highly overrated.

5 out of 5 stars Destiny in a box.... .......2007-07-10

This movie was and IS a classic. From the first moment to the last, this movie is touching, moving, action-packed, humorous and just plain unbelievable.

I can't add much to my review that hasn't already been said, but I like this collector's edition. I liked the extras and I loved watching the finished product. Tom Hanks brought this character to life. This movie isn't a script. It's a story that Tom Hanks took control over. It's a part that he was born to play. And he played it to the hilt!

I loved, loved, loved loved this movie!!!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Damn Funny.......2007-09-17

This movie is pretty funny. Its a "run of the mill" comedy in sorts. Fart jokes, potty humor, nudity, wild animals, half naked men, violence, old ladies, and of course harsh language. But its more than that too. Its pretty damn funny. It takes the best of a lot of those things and makes an awesome movie out of it. Its just fun to watch. I bought this at a low price from Amazon, and it came with a tag from WalMart, which I found humorous too.

All in all, buy this movie, its a good time waster with some good laughs too. Also, it's pretty cheap, so you really wont be wasting your money if for some reason you dont like it.

I gave it a four because there is a certain "cheese" factor to the main character's stoner friend, but one can over those scenes fairly quickly.

3 out of 5 stars This movie is sooo funny!.......2007-09-01

This movie is a riot. I've watched it over and over, and it just gets funnier. Some may find the "crude" humor offensive, but personally, I think it's one of the best stoner movies of all time!

5 out of 5 stars Funniest Movie I've Seen in a Long TIme.......2007-08-25

My sister happened to catch this on cable one night just for something to watch. No one had ever heard of it but by the next day she was telling everyone this was the funniest movie she's seen in a long time. She had said that if I happen to catch this on cable I should take the time and wouldn't be dissappointed. The humor is silly in nature but it's done really well. It reminds me more of classic comedy from the 80s rather than some of the stuff they come up with today. I laughed out loud watching this movie. After my initial viewing of this movie it seemed that I'd always have to watch it if I came across it on cable just "flipping through". I decided I'd miss it once it was out of it's rotation on cable and purchased it to add to my DVD collection. I've told numerous people about this movie all who have seen it (or borrowed my DVD) have to agree it was pretty funny.
