4 out of 5 stars Plite of small farmers.......2007-04-06

I would have liked to see more veiws of the farm. Reconized Bingham township hall but not much more. I bought the movie because the farm used was of a relitive of mine. A great film on the plite of small farmers being forced out of farming by governemnt and housing marketers who have little concern for local areas and its inpact.

5 out of 5 stars Barn Red.......2007-03-24

I grew up on a family farm in Michigan and I am aware of the many problems facing them today. Farm land there is slowly being sold for development. It was very encouraging to view a film that correctly addresses many of those problems along with long term solutions.

4 out of 5 stars The cause almost takes over, but the movie still succeeds.......2006-09-02

Whether or not you enjoy this movie will likely depend on the following two things: 1)Do you require a lot of action in your movies? If so, this one is not for you. 2) Do you enjoy movies about people and relationships (a 'chick flick' to give it a name, although I think this tag too often turns off people who might still like a movie)? If so, you may enjoy this one. The reason I only say "may" is because this is a movie with a cause - to stop the needless development of farmland - and the cause at times takes over the whole movie (and I say that in spite of the fact that this is a cause I can certainly get behind).

Beyond this one flaw, however, I enjoyed the scenery and the character development. I did think that it was unnecessary - maudlin, actually - to have the possibly HIV-positive storyline with Kimberly Norris Guerrero's character come up halfway through the movie. Her visiting out of pure nostalgia would have suited me just fine and would still have been quite believable.

I recommend this one if you want to feel like you've spent a couple of hours in a beautiful and quiet area of the country with some good friends.

4 out of 5 stars Good Family Movie.......2005-10-11

The story line is very touching and overall this is a good family movie. I have two children, ages 10 and 13, and I found nothing in this film offensive or gratuitous. (Truly suitable for all ages.) I live in Northern Michigan where Barn Red was filmed and the scenery is spectacular! I especially enjoyed the use of the area's "old family names" to give a personal touch to the script.

4 out of 5 stars Old-Fashioned Thriller from Tod Slaughter: They Don't Make Films Like This Anymore.......2007-09-14

(As to the picture quality of DVD, see Fred Mudge's review)

They don't make films like this any more. Old-school horror maestro Tod Slaughter gives us gleefully theatrical performances as Squire Corder who seduces a local peasant girl Maria Marten, and then plans to get rid of her while attempting to pay his debt by marrying another woman. Tod Slaughter, who often played the roles of villains (including murderous barber Sweeney Todd) on stage, shows his trademark sneering, eye-rolling acting as "evil" square, but his turns as the killer are more restrained than Sweeney Todd.

The film shows a glimpse of what the stage in Victorian era was like, but at the same time it looks less stagy with more sophisticated and modern camera works including the climax sequence in the barn where Corder is driven to near madness.

The story of Red Barn Murder is based on true events that happened in the village of Polstead, Suffolk, in 1827. (The details of what really happened can be easily found on the websites like Wikipedia.) The murder case was immediately turned into a variety of plays, which remained popular stock plays during the 19th century. I know the version that ends with Maria's ghost haunting Corder, but this filmed version wraps up with more dramatic (and implausibly melodramatic) fashion.

William Corder's trial and his subsequent execution was soon followed by another sensational case of "Burke and Hare," notorious Edinburgh murders William Burke and William Hare, which also became a film "Horror Maniacs" aka "The Greed of William Hart" starring, of course, Tod Slaughter.

4 out of 5 stars Sociopathic Glee..........2006-07-20

Tod Slaughter plays a magistrate who is not at all what he appears to be (of course). He is drowning in gambling debts and must find a way to repay massive losses. So, he decides to marry a rich old woman in a hurry. Oh-oh! It seems that he's seduced a local maiden in the meantime, and gotten her pregnant! And she's poor! Our evil magistrate must find a way out of this sticky situation. What do you think he'll do? Well, Mr. Slaughter has only one method of dealing with such dilemmas! A quick murder and a shallow grave! Will he be found out? MURDER IN THE RED BARN has the lowest body-count of all Tod Slaughter films, but it's still a classic!...

2 out of 5 stars Not Great Print Quality.......2005-01-18

A great film if you are into 1930s British horror, but unfortunately the print quality here is not so good. The version released by Arcanum in their Johnny Legend Deadly Doubles series has a much better quality print, PLUS a missing scene. AND it is paired with second feature FACE AT THE WINDOW.

I gave this to my grand-nephew who is 16 months old. He just loves it!!! After my parents, sister, and newphew saw it, they are buying some for friends and themselves to keep at their house!

5 out of 5 stars My toddler's favorite DVD.......2006-04-15

My son is almost two years old and he absolutely adores The Old Red Barn Club. The show not only showcases life on the farm but includes songs, colors and a variety of learning tools that my son finds fascinating. I highly recommend the Old Barn Club!

I sent the video to my grand-nephew for his 1st birthday (April). When I visited this past weekend, we watched the video together. I was drawn in by his excitement. He is just learning to speak. He was so involved with the characters and songs. I would highly recommend this. So refreshing !

5 out of 5 stars Best kids' dvd of the year.......2005-03-23

This is a fantastic dvd for the pre-k/kindergarten age group. Cute characters, catchy music, and entertaining story lines that blend educational material with real-life lessons. It's like "Sesame Street" without the commercialism and the hype. You should definitely consider "The Old Red Barn Club" if you have small childreb!

5 out of 5 stars Played again and again--definitely worth getting!.......2005-03-16

HIGHLY RECOMMEND this DVD which has quickly become a favorite that both my girls (2 and 5) will watch. Interactive educational TV watching for young kids--that even exposes your child to some Spanish! The kids like the actual real footage of the animals on the farm as well as seeing other young kids in the program. This is a nice change from all the computer generated and cartoon animated children's programs out there. The songs have catchy tunes that the kids love--the 2 year old gets up and likes to dance along. I'm going to check out the fundraising offer on the website www.theoldredbarnclub.com . It would be a great fundraiser for a nursery school. Worth getting!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this!.......2004-12-12

Yes, my first copy had the audio problem, but the replacement played fine, so don't be afraid to buy this fine introduction to an overlooked horror star. In his highly theatrical way, Tod Slaughter was as enjoyable as Karloff or Lugosi, and, as a few reviewers have noted, no actor ever had so much fun being Bad (with a capital B)! FACE is probably his best and BARN is his first; both films are eminently watchable with good picture quality. So, give Europe's Horror Man a chance; if you love '30s and '40s fright films, chances are you won't regret it. I, for one, hope to see more Slaughter on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars MY COPY PLAYS FINE - BEST AVAILABLE VERSIONS ANYWHERE.......2004-11-23

Based on the review above, I contacted the company before buying this title. They told me that though the initial pressing was missing the audio on the second title, it was caught almost immediately and only 125 copies got to market with this problem. They also informed me that they would replace any defective copies if you drop them an email at their website. With this assurance, I went ahead and purchased a copy. To my delight, it not only plays perfectly, but both films are sharp, crisp and the best, most complete versions of these films available anywhere. The Alpha video version of MITRB looks like mud next to this. Extensive liner notes and beautiful packaging all around. A "must-have" for Slaughter fans and devotees of classic horror.

4 out of 5 stars An impressive old-school horror movie.......2003-01-20

This 1940 George King production from British Lion Studios is a delightfully evil if somewhat hokey little horror film. The setting is Paris, France in the year 1880, and a series of murders has the populace in mortal terror of "Le Loup" ("the wolf"). Why the killer is described as a wolfman is beyond me because in each case, the victim sees a horrifying face in the window and is stabbed in the back with a dagger. When M. de Brisson's bank is robbed during one murder, he fears he will be ruined financially. Then a new client, Chevalier Del Gardo appears to entrust a substantial amount of money to his care; the Chevalier's motives are far from noble, however, as he wants the hand of the young, beautiful Cecile de Brisson in return for his help. Cecile is in love with "lowly" bank clerk Lucien Cortier, and Del Gardo attempts to frame him for the murders. Several additional murders are perpetrated during the course of the story, and Lucien's last opportunity to prove his innocence involves a great new discovery made by a "mad" (yet noble) scientist. This scientist has successfully used electricity to reanimate dead animals, and he is convinced that he can do the same for a dead human; in this manner, one of Le Loup's victims will be able to come back just long enough to name his murderer.

I found this to be an excellent early horror flick. Some elements of the plot are a little ridiculous, but the actors play their parts exceedingly well and do not at any time overdramatize and thus undermine the story. Tod Slaughter plays the evil Chevalier Del Gardo to the hilt and could rightfully make reference to a truly evil cackle on his acting resume, John Warwick as Lucien Cortier shines as the quintessential hero determined to clear his name and nab the true killer, and Marjorie Taylor is delightful as Cecile de Brisson. The special effects, such as they are, are also very effective, particularly the coalescing image of the hideous "face at the window." The introductory text that introduces the motion picture sums the movie up quite well; The Face at the Window is an old-school melodrama "dear to the hearts of all who unashamedly enjoy either a shudder or a laugh at the heights of villainy."
