A baseball comedy and slob comedy rolled into one, this one actually works as entertainment, if not as a piece of cinematic mastery. James Gammon is the has-been manager hired to lead the last-place Cleveland Indians whose owner wants them to lose so she can sell them. But the team of has-beens and never-wases that he assembles (including Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, Corbin Bernsen, and Wesley Snipes) develops a sense of pride and turns the team around. There's plenty of rowdy humor about sex, race, and whatever else they can make fun of. Look for Rene Russo (in her first film role) as Berenger's romantic interest; Snipes also had his first showy role as Willie Mays Hayes, the team's base-stealing ace. --Marshall FineCustomer Reviews:

Explore the fascinating world of imagination in the company of master illustrator and storyteller Maurice Sendak. In this animated version of Where the Wild Things Are, Sendak's striking illustrations spring to life as the wild boy Max magically metamorphoses into the King of the Wild Rumpus right before viewers' eyes. Carole King lends a folksy, sometimes jazzy sound to Nutshell Library stories "Pierre," "One Was Johnny," and "Chicken Soup with Rice" as viewers learn about the alphabet, counting, and months of the year. Finally, Mickey's nighttime discovery In the Night Kitchen culminates in an impressively rendered ride through space. Sendak's original artwork is faithfully preserved in this animated presentation and Peter Schickele's narration, and original musical compositions add richness and depth to the stories. (Ages 3 to 10) --Tami HoriuchiDescription

Wild Things is the kind of lurid, trashy thriller that you'll either dive into with unabashed pleasure or turn away from in prudish disgust; it's entirely your choice, but we suggest the former option since it's obviously much more fun. The plot's so convoluted it's hardly worth describing, except to say that it's set in humid Florida and involves a respected high school teacher (Matt Dillon--yes, Matt Dillon as a teacher!) who is faced with accusations of rape by a student (Denise Richards, from Starship Troopers) who had been giving him the kind of attention most people would consider improper for such a "nice" young lady. Another student (Neve Campbell) raises a similar charge against the teacher, and that's when a police officer (Kevin Bacon) begins to investigate the allegations. Just when you think the movie's gone overboard with its shameless sex and absurdly twisted plot, in drops Bill Murray as an unscrupulous lawyer (of course) to spice things up with insurance scams and welcomed comic relief. As directed by John McNaughton (who has a way of making just the right moves with this kind of film noir melodrama), Wild Things is a bona fide guilty pleasure--the kind of movie you may be ashamed to enjoy, but what the heck, you'll enjoy it anyway. --Jeff ShannonCustomer Reviews:

Wild Things 2, the purported sequel to the 1998 guilty-pleasure classic, returns to steamy Florida for another tale of trashy thrills among the lives of high school students. Brittany (Susan Ward, of the Aaron Spelling soaps Malibu Shores and Sunset Beach) is a beach-volleyball stud and nice girl whose chance for happiness is threatened by her vicious rival Maya (Leila Arcieri). Toss in a suspicious investigator (Isaiah Washington), some plot twists, and laughable dialogue, and sit back for the ride. Wild Things 2 isn't really a sequel; none of the characters (and not surprisingly none of the actors) return, though there is a re-do of the original's most famous scene. That's about the only semi-noteworthy aspect of this straight-to-video potboiler. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:

The whole thing is in late-60s black and white. But that's okay.
What you get here is some classic performances (some live, some recorded) of bands as far reaching as The Who, Status Quo, Procol Harum, The Troggs, and even the Bonzo Dog Band. What's really nice is that the songs performed by all the bands here are not necessarily what you would expect to see on a DVD; there aren't many hits here. The Kinks, for example, do "PLastic Man," a great song but one I had not heard before.
Another example: Manfred Mann performs "Ha Ha! Said the Clown," rather than their more familiar stuff of that era, such as "the Mighty Quinn."
The DVD packs a ton of songs into less than an hour, has "pop-up" extras for each video, and is worth the meager amount they want for it.
Pick it up! You'll like it!
