Lisa Lampanelli's shocking and hilarious appearances on television from "The Tonight Show" to Comedy Central roasts have made her the hottest comic in the country. Now her second Comedy Central special, "Dirty Girl," is presented on CD and DVD. "Comedy's Lovable Queen of Mean" (New York Times) gets down and dirty on Dirty Girl "No Protection," and it is filthy funny.

5 out of 5 stars Could there be anyone funnier???.......2007-09-01

Raunchy, racist, and right-on!!! Nothing's better than Lisa's in-your-face stand-up. She makes fun of everyone...and in the process, teaches us that we're no better than anyone else. You MUST love her.

4 out of 5 stars finally a woman with humor.......2007-05-07

I saw Lisa Lampanelli with a friend en we liked it a lot. Usually i dont like female stand-up comedy because the jokes are always lame. But Lisa is a hard one! She makes every racial joke there is, talking a lot against the people in the audience and also isnt embarrassed to make a foul of herself.
I thought almost 2 hours was to much but she did it en I enjoyed the whole show. Also, the extra on the DVD is super! I dont understand why they cut out this fragment of the show because its hilarious!

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as "Take It Like a Man".......2007-03-22

Her previous effort "Take It Like a Man" is one of the funniest stand up act's I've ever seen. Unfortunately her new release "Dirty Girl: No Protection" is no where near as funny. It feels worn out, over played, & less of a stand up routine, but more of lets tell a bunch of the same short stories but change them up a bit. Sure there still some of the funny racial bits making fun of different audiance members, but it equals maybe 10 minutes of time on this effort.

If you don't like crude racial humour, then you're not going to like Lisa Lampanelli period & should look for a different type comedian. If you've never seen one of Lisa's special's before buy the DVD of "Take It Like A Man", you'll laugh until you almost cry. This effort however, is worth no more than a rental & you shouldn't expect a whole lot of hysterical material.

Buy "Take It Like a Man" instead & rent "Dirty Girl: No Protection" if you must see it.

2 out of 5 stars DULL DULL DULL .......2007-02-21

Oh dear what a disapointment !
I loved lisa's first DVD but this was dull and unfunny . There didn't seem to be enough material to fill out an hour so its padded out with old old jokes and way too much crowd interaction .The queen of mean trots out the same tired racist stereotypes but does nothing to subvert them .
It all seems shopworn and tired . AVOID

1 out of 5 stars Like Andrew Dice Clay but without the wit.......2007-02-06

Yes, she makes the Diceman seem witty. Classy even. Hurling abuse is lazy and damaging. For a real comic, try early Izzard.

The sinuous world of 1950s Cuban dance halls provides the setting for Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, a "reimagining" that shares with the original movie a deep love of sexy young people pressed tightly together on the dance floor. Fresh from New England, bookish and lovely Katey (Romola Garai, adorable in the charming but little-seen I Capture the Castle) meets a fiery young busboy named Javier (Diego Luna, Y Tu Mama Tambien) at a snooty hotel. Before you can say Tito Puente, the two have found a common language in the sensual swaying of their limbs, despite the resistance of Katey's mother (Sela Ward). It's all ridiculous, of course--the dialogue is atrocious, the characters tortilla-thin, and the politics embarrassing--but that's hardly the point. Luna is dreamy, there's lots of sweaty dancing, and Patrick Swayze makes an appearance--what more can you ask from a movie called Dirty Dancing? --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars Nice movie with a little history lesson.......2007-06-10

Pretty predictable if you watched the first Dirty Dancing. Still some good dancing in this one and it was good for a movie with next to no know actors in it. I found the activities going on during this period in Havana more interesting then the story of the main characters. Good to watch, not good to own.

4 out of 5 stars Videos.......2007-02-27

This was a present for my 17-year-old daughter, who loves to dance. She likes Havana Nights for its spicyness and Spanish flvor. It is a teen-age thing.

3 out of 5 stars Que tonta.......2006-11-27

I understand that Dirty Dancing movies aren't going to be exactly like Citizen Kain. But when you think about the premise, the culture and classist clash of American vs. Cuban dancing, sexuality, and budding romance set during the backdrop of the Revolution, the movie sounds quite promising. I mean, when I heard the premise I thought "This movie was MADE for me," because it has Cuban history and politics, awesome dancing (or so I assumed it would, due to its predecessor,) and, come on, the main character has the same name as me. But I should have realized then that a good premise does not necessarily lead to a good, or even adequate, execution.

I won't summarize the movie as so many others do; if you want a synopsis, look to their reviews. I WILL point out what exactly I found so lacking about it, and why I do not feel it was that good of a movie, even when one considers that it's ultimately just a dance movie. But again one must remember that it was their decision to involve politics in the movie, and in doing so they made themselves fair game--I do not believe in just using a deep political situation just to make a story line seem a little deeper; if it is not handled properly, it is insulting.

First off, the romance. Diego Luna and Romola Garai had definite chemistry, and it is so disappointing when you realize that the movie did not capitalize upon this, and all you're going to see in addition to some very sexually charged dancing is a few hurried onscreen kisses and an implied sex scene. Given their chemistry and the buildup of their relationship, their first kiss could have been so much better, instead of just snuck in during a dance routine--it was so quick I spent many minutes wondering if I had really seen it or not. However, to me chemistry is not the only thing required in an on-screen relationship, and I have no idea to this minute why Javier and Katey fell in love with each other. Katey's personality was developed in the movie sense (she likes classic literature, is a bookworm and rather progressive for her time) and Javier was clearly the "will do anything for his family and feels that Cuba is in need of a change" but I don't really know how those two fit together. Aside from the sexual attraction component, I have no idea what exactly they saw in each other to make their relationship anything more than "He was hot, she was pretty, and she felt sorry for him." Some might argue that Katey was merely attracted to the intensity and freedom of the Cuban lifestyle embodied by Javier, but I ask you: the movie was founded upon the idea of a romance, and what the heck kind of relationship is that?

I would also like to add that the Spanish conversations WITHOUT subtitles were incredibly rude to the audience. I do speak Spanish, but I could not make much sense of the slurred words and to this day I am wondering what exactly Javier and his brother said to each other after the Revolution broke out. Maybe they figured that the audience would not care (pfft, what are politics compared to SALSA DANCING,) but I cared.

And now, the historical components. I will not get into the anachronisms--such as Katey's parents' attitude towards her staying nights with a boy they don't know, and that even Cuba in the 50's could not have been that unrestrained--as there are many who could do that better justice than I (apparently the style of dancing in the movie was unlike what was popular in Cuba at the time.) After all, it is only a dance movie. I can ignore that stuff. But when the movie brings the history to ME I cannot ignore it, and I further dislike it when movie directors assume that their audience is completely ignorant of certain aspects of history and will just assume that "Man, that Batista guy was a jerk; he didn't allow dancing. Hopefully life will be better under this new regime! Who'd they say it was, some guy by the name of Fidel Something-or-Another?" (I am exaggerating; at least I hope that no one is that ignorant.)

And here we get to the backdrop of the story, Revolutionary Cuba. First off, Batista's regime wasn't really shown to be that bad; aside from the story involving Javier's father, it might as well have been that town in Footloose (perhaps a little more violent.) It was like Dictatorship Lite. After Havana falls to Castro and co., the Cubans act happy (which is understandable) but things are otherwise pretty calm, which one cannot imagine is really likely in such a situation.

And then we get to the ending. Katey asks Javier to come to America with her. In a move which my sister has deemed the "stupidest decision in a movie ever," Javier refuses, saying that he has to stay because of the Revolution, which he believes (or wants to believe, anyway) will improve life for him and his people, Batista killed his free-thinking father, viva la Revolución, yadda yadda yadda. I understand that movies don't always have happy endings, but I think that there is a middle ground between "boy and girl live happily ever after" to "girl lives happily ever after and boy gets sent to the gulag after he finds out that Castro isn't exactly the nice guy he claims to be and wow, Batista was a cakewalk compared to this, and has to spend his years in a drawer cell where he would kick himself for his earlier decision if, you know, he could actually kick himself, but drawer cells don't allow that." I truly think that the filmmakers did not anticipate their audience to think this much, which is understandable, but come on--everyone knows that communist Cuba is no picnic, and when Katey says something along the lines of "I know that we'll meet again," I couldn't help but thinking that the only way THAT would happen would be if Javier braves the Gulf and takes up Florida's wet feet dry feet policy. In fact, when I told my friend about the ending he said, "that boy is going to have to stop dancing and learn to convert his '57 Chevy into a boat."

I understand that people at first thought that Castro was fantastic and he didn't reveal his true intentions until later, but the fact remains that Cuba was politically instable and to choose to stay there instead of going to America was still pretty questionable. And then Katey's optimistic "We'll see each other again someday!" was just waaaay too much for me.

So, in short, if you're like me and you can't turn off your brain while watching a movie, this one's going to give you a lot of issues. If you CAN turn off your brain and just enjoy it for what it is--a dance movie--you'll probably like it, though find some things (like the romance) lacking.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the others.......2006-10-24

I bought this movie last year on a hum bug. This movie really surprised me. I really enjoyed it. My daughters love it as well. We watch it constantly and the soundtrack is awesome too.

5 out of 5 stars For the Love of Dancing, Great Lessons! Romantic Story!.......2006-10-16

Choreographed to utter perfection, the love story between two inspiring young characters from different worlds grows through a masterpiece of dancing blended from steps in their special journey together. Beautiful Katey(Romola Garai) finds all the ingredients: to be special, important, wanted and needed in a guy who completes her in the passion for dancing, and wins in a national dance competition that spectacularly surprises her parents and old friends. Her dedication to help Javier yields a bitter-sweet reward as they both get more than they expected in freedom, intimacy, and royalty in the world of great music and rhythm that make their last dance the dance of a lifetime. This movie is truly delightful to watch over and over. The captivating music, creative dance, and wonderful love story all come together in a symbolic journey through life!

4 out of 5 stars This movie rings true!.......2007-09-10

I was lucky enough to preview a pre-production DVD and shared it with a friend who lived this life for years. She said it was spot-on and skewered every stereotype and cliche (and what is L.A. if not stereotypes and cliches?) of the Hollywood party scene. But so much of it is universal. The scene where they drive home the morning after, as the public is just beginning their day, really rang true with me, and I grew up in a city on the east coast. Watch for the very cool 1960's convertible!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2007-08-28

I first saw this at the Hamptons Film Festival. I begged the producer for a copy of the film to show all my friends. I thought the movie was excellent and very well done. A must see!

5 out of 5 stars Debauchery @ its finest.......2007-08-27

Totally one of a kind. Not a big budget, over-produced, concept comedy - but a great little adventure one night in Hollywood. We follow a handful of 20/30 somethings on a typical weekend night, all on the prowl to have a good time. There's the bitchy girls, the dorky guys, the punk rockers, the hipster boys, and the 80's rappers.... who all flow in and out of one another's storylines. There are trippy graphics/narration that reminds you of a government how-to guide from the 60's. We are taught how to get into a club, how to find a good house party, how to score drugs, why scoring drugs can lead to heart attacks, how to avoid that boy or girl that you really shouldn't hook up with, and generally how to navigate a successful night on the town.

5 out of 5 stars The Freshest, Funkiest Party Flick Ever!.......2007-07-31

This movie is a must see! It's a crazy comedy like no other. Part satire poking fun at the L.A. Hipster bar scene and part party guide, the Boys and Girls Guide to Getting Down is a fresh flick! Young, hip actors - awesome wirting and direction by paul sapiano - sweet graphics by [...]. Watch this movie!!

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best modern Party Movie of All-Time.......2007-07-24

I'm a total film nut and have seen just about every movie out there. I saw The Boys & Girls Guide to Getting Down several months ago at a special screening in Hollywood...

It totally blew me away. Raw, hillarious, true to the lifestyle. One of the best party films ever. Brilliantly directed and shot, some great unknown actors, and a clever narration vehicle to move the story forward at an upbeat pace. It's like I was watching a collection of the funniest stories from my nightlife experiences in LA. And honestly, for those green newbies to the LA scene...Very informative. Almost educational. You will probably never see this film in a major theatre, but great gem for the personal DVD collection. I'm def putting it on in the background next time we have a rager.
As an indie filmmaker myself, this is the kind of film that keeps me inspired.
Glad you guys finally got this bad boy to DVD.
Good Luck with the Film.

This DVD combines two previous VHS collections.

Birthday Bash
Sugar, spice, everything nice, and a bit of Chemical X is what it took to bring us Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup--also known as those crime- fighting kindergartners, the Powerpuff Girls. This video collection of five episodes from their hit Cartoon Network show provides a delightfully humorous introduction to the minuscule marvels. The title episode, "Birthday Bash," features the girls defeating the destructive plans of three separate villains (Mojo Jojo, the Princess, and the Amoeba Boys) without ever leaving their own birthday celebration. "Beat Your Greens" introduces us to alien broccoli, and "Stuck Up, Up and Away" shows the origin of the girls' female nemesis, Princess. "School House Rocked" and "Los Dos Mojo" complete the villain cycle by featuring the Gangrene Gang and Mojo Jojo--the ever failing and overdressed monkey--in tales that show us the girls both at school and on the job. A bonus cartoon, "Sheep in the Big City," doesn't feature the Powerpuff Girls but will be enjoyed by their fans for its combination of blatant and intelligent humor, much like the style of the jokes found in all Powerpuff episodes. With a running time of over an hour, this tape is sure to provide its viewers with a good supply of girl power. (Ages 5 and older.) --Zachary Lively

Dream Scheme
The crime-fighting kindergarteners go after the Sandman, a jealous schoolmate, the usual monsters, and a superhero impostor in this five- episode compilation from the Cartoon Network favorite. The overworked, sleep-deprived Sandman is out of control in the title episode, putting the whole world to sleep so he can get some shut-eye of his own. But the gals thwart him by appearing in his dream and turning it into a nightmare. "Just Another Manic Mojo" finds the hermit monkey trying to destroy the trio with a giant laser when they come to his castle to retrieve their wayward ball. Buttercup refuses to bathe in "Down 'n' Dirty," stinking up Pokey Oaks Kindergarten and grossing out even the villains she battles. Classmate Princess hires Mojo to isolate Chemical X and turn her into a Powerpuff Girl in "Mo Job." And muscle-bound Major Man replaces the girls in the hearts and minds of Townsville when his exploits surpass theirs--but not for long, of course. The 70-minute video includes a bonus episode of "Courage the Cowardly Dog," which involves an eggplant uprising against the dog's vegetable-loving owner, Muriel, in a story called "Journey to the Center of Nowhere." (Ages 7 and older.) --Kimberly Heinrichs

5 out of 5 stars Saving the World Before Bedtime!.......2007-08-26

I have to admit that I have always had a soft spot for the Powerpuff Girls. I find the frequently tongue-in-cheek humour to be very witty and like most good cartoons are, this one is thoroughly entertaining for both kids and adults alike. My favourite Cartoon Network character is actually Dexter's Lab but until they release that on DVD I guess this will have to do as second best. This DVD has been very well thought out and designed and contains good bonus features as well as 10 great episodes. Highly recommended for a good laugh!

4 out of 5 stars No Frills Collection of Good Episodes.......2007-08-03

The episodes on this disc are of the high quality I expect from this series. "Beat Your Greens" is especially creative and amusing--a twist on the age-old controversy over eating one's vegetables. Unfortunately, there aren't any extras to speak of on the DVD, so there's no compelling reason to buy the disc if you've already seen the episodes. If you're new to the series, I'd recommend starting with The Powerpuff Girls - The Movie instead.

2 out of 5 stars Not very good........2006-03-20

WHY does Buttercup h8 baths?Maybe she is a STUPID GIRL!The others are better cuz they love baths.Me,too,I love baths. But I luv baths the most!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!They make you clean,Plus a Shower does.

4 out of 5 stars The Power Puff Girls: Birthday Bash DVD.......2004-01-04

Birthday Bash was a good DVD.It contained 2 of my favourite episodes:'Down 'n' Dirty and 'Paste makes waste.'
In'Down 'n' Dirty' Buttercup refuses to take a bath and once she got really dirty she made the town, her school and even her own house smell.Buttercup gets kicked out of town. After she flies away she fights with a monster she saw. After the fight the monster goes home and tells Buttercup that she stinks and makes her go home and have a bath so that she can fight monsters again.
'Paste makes waste is about a boy at 'Pokey Oaks Kindergarten' called Elmer Sglue who eats glue.He is teased by Mitch,Buttercup and the twins Floyd & Lloyd.Them and the rest of the class(except Blossom and Bubbles)call him "Paste eater".Later on Elmer gets very angry and turns into a paste monster and he goes to destroy the town. The only way for Elmer to stop destroying the town is by Buttercup saying she's sorry. She finally says it and Elmer and Buttercup are now friends.

5 out of 5 stars I love da Powerpuffs sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much!!!!.......2003-04-18

OK! Now, let's get started. Here's the episodes of what they're about.

Birthday Bash: This is the best episode on da video!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, Its the Girls birthdays, & Mojos present is soo funny! The robot says "I am I gift from Mojo Jojo! Enjoy your birthday, or it will be your last!" hahahaha! The rocket from Princess was cool too. And the funniest present of them all was the Ameoba Boys Powerpuff Voodoo Dolls. I cracked up. And Him gives candy. (5 stars) The second one was Beat Your Greens. Another hillarious episode. It's when these evil Brocli Aliens plant brocli spores on the farm & the kids don't like Brocli. O, it's soo funny when this young dad says 2 his baby boy: "Here comes the Brocli express! Woo Woo!" O, & the brocli Aliens sound like robots with their eyes open. But, with their eyes closed, they sound like evil babys. Geesh! And, its hillarious when the kids & Powerpuffs chomp them up. (5 stars) 3d is Paste Makes Waste. Well, this boy in class, Elmer eats paste & these bullys like Mitch, Buttercup, & these 2 weird twins laugh at him 4 being a paste eater. Buttercup throws paste all over the table by saying: "Eat this, paste eata!" And when Elmer eats toxic with a bug, he turns into a man monster. Elmer puts paste all over Townsville, & it's surprising that the Mayor dosen't say anything! Idiot! Blossom & Buttercup get absorbed, & Buttercup says "I'mmmmmmm SOA-AAAARRRRR-REEEEY!!!!!!!!!!!" And Elmer says she's cool now. (5 stars) 4th is School House Rocked. Well, the Gangreene Gang go 2 school, Mr. Wednesday wanted them 2. That man sounds soo boring. But, I T loves this episode. The Gangreene Gang always fool & trick people into letting them eat food & stuff. When Ace drops it & says sorry, he really does it on purpose! Jerk!!! O, the begenning wuz kool when Ace & Snakey was playin a Powerpuff game with Bubbles vs. Fuzzy Lumpkins. Why didn't he give the Powerpuffs mean presents in Birthday Bash? Well, Ms. Keane thinks the girls we're splatting paste in school, but its the Gangreene Gang's fault of course. O, it's so funny when Billy shows he has 1 eye. HA HA HA HA HA HA! Also, when Grubber pretents 2 be a human. HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! & when Turo holds up this deadly stapler who pretends its a girl. HA! & the stupid evil gang tricks the kids into playin Dodgeball. They cheat by throwing balls at the kids. Nasty freaks!!! (5 stars) Last, but not least is Los Dos Mojos. It's when Mojo destroys Townsville lighley. when Bubbles is on the ground, she hears Mojos words & teleports & wakes up thinking she's the real Mojo Jojo! AAH! She destroys townsville with dark shadowey eyes! GEE! Its soo funny when she says "I am not Bubbles! Bubbles is not my name! If u adress me by Mojo Jojo, that would be correct! I am bad, I am evil, I am Mojo Jojo!!!" Mojo Bubbles laughs like a snake. hehehe. O, she also even says "Its time to keep your maker!" & Blossom & Buttacup say "U LEAVE THE PROFECCER OUT OF THIS!!!" & Mojo Jojo Bubbles also says "Alone shall I rule this world!" & also even "What's the matta Buttacup? Afraid 2 fight?" She also kicks Mojo out of his house! (5 stars) O, the Courage bonus episode Journey to the Center of Nowere is awsome too! Well, there's these little monstrous eggplants who thinks Muriel is their enemy. O, it's soo hillarious when Courage disguises as the Great Eggplant! He says, "Fellow Eggplants, Muriel is not our real enemy." Also, he even says: "Great Eggplant says, do this funky!" (5 stars) This is da best Powerpuff video in the collection yet!

3 out of 5 stars Classic Films, Mediocre Transfers.......2005-05-04

Own these films individually on DVD from Image Entertainment. Nice to have them in boxed sets like this though I must let Metzger fans know that the transfers from First Run are not as good as the Image versions. Where the Image versions are color saturated and sharp, the First Run transfers have murky, faded out color and soft pictures.

Still, for the price, these boxed sets aren't a bad buy.

Although Dirty Pair premiered as a TV series in Japan in 1985, it was the publication of comic books based on the program three years later that won the show a fan base in the U.S. These 5 episodes make up the first half of 10 adventures that are billed as an OAV, but are really episodes added to the original TV series to flesh out a foreign release. Red-haired Kei and black-haired Yuri are "Trouble Consultants" who handle difficult assignments for the World's Welfare Work Association; they prefer the epithet "Lovely Angels" to "Dirty Pair." Their assignments range from breaking the hold of a technologically rigged theocracy to unmasking a crooked gambling satellite. The scantily clad Kei and Yuri are always ready for a fight--or another wisecrack--and the show is made up of equal parts cleavage, action, and comedy. Rated 15 Up: Violence, profanity. --Charles Solomon

4 out of 5 stars cool.......2007-06-10

This is a really cool 80's space anime. Though my only complaint is that they changed the music in the dub version. My favorite episode on this disc is the Halloween one, for i thought it was the most funny. Not to mention that one of my friend's little sister is really into this series.

5 out of 5 stars Anime is japaneese for fun.......2002-02-20

Anime is japanese for fun, so that is the spirit in which we should take films like this. It is the original girl power movie. the girls have a good off again on again relationship that keeps sanity in bikins amid all of the craziness.

4 out of 5 stars Girls with a pretty good DVD.......2001-12-06

This is a very nice DVD containing the first 5 episodes of the 10 episode Dirty Pair OAV series. Not to be confused with any of the movies/OAV's previously released by Streamline. The episodes look similar to the TV series in their designs and animation. The pair tackle five more assignments of galactic significance with their usual carefree manner and disregard for property. Much of the fun is in the pair's rocky friendship. The DVD is well done in several regards. The liberties taken with the dub seem largely to add to the charm of the show or at least not detract from it. My big complaint with the dub is the foul language which, though I don't disapprove of itself, is a little overused. The subtitle is more literal and feels competent. Each episode is selectable directly from the main menu and starts from a preview of the episode, which is very convenient when you just want to know which one it is. You can select Japanese, English, or English with Op/End Lyrics which is also a nice feature. Credits appear before and after every episode and the lyrics alternate between translated and romanji. Bonus material includes a text-less opening animation but no closing. The picture looked like it was taken from a quality master. The sound I can't really comment on but it looks like Dolby Digital 2-channel for both English and Japanese and sounded clear to me. The only thing I could think to add might be a gallery of some kind, or some liner notes. This was intended for VHS or LaserDisk viewing and made during the 80's, it's no Mononoke Hime. Taking this into consideration I think this is a great DVD that is worth the money. I give it four stars. I only hope ADV can release the TV series in a similar fashion. Please.

4 out of 5 stars Old School Dirty Pair.......2001-11-29

I'll get to the point. This DVD is about a pair of interplanetary police agency, or something like that, that do their police work while wearing bikinis. In the four episodes they: save a prison warden, destroy a berserk robot, disarm a bunch of spoiled brats, and shut down a casino. Since this is old school anime, the graphics are not the best but OK, plots are adequate for 25-minute episodes. No explicit violence or nudity, so it's OK for kids. I would have given a 3-star rating if it wasn't for the jokes that the girls crack about each other constantly. Did I mention that they mostly wear bikinis!

Radley Metzger had carved out a nice little career for himself importing and dubbing European erotic dramas (such as I, a Woman) when he decided to direct his own. All that Euro-chic elegance comes through in his first film, The Dirty Girls, a handsome little picture short on story and tame by modern standards (there's more tease than striptease) but full of that happily hedonistic continental attitude. Shot on location in Europe, it's an elegant, low-budget picture about two call girls in the most beautiful cities of the world. In Paris, "the City of Love," a lovely streetwalker on the Champs Élysées spends an evening entertaining a series of clients, one of whom enjoys a woman in uniform. In Munich, "the City of Pleasure," a high-class courtesan brings pleasure to a pair of wealthy patrons while awaiting the return of her lover. Metzger and his cinematographer Hans Jura serve up the flirting and foreplay in a cool, chic black-and-white sheen. It's a modest effort but sets the tone for Metzger's future films: despite the title, Metzger treats sex as anything but dirty and maintains an unusual (for 1964) respect for his heroines. Bonus scenes at the end of the film feature slightly more explicit versions of a few scenes shot for the European market. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Mid - 60s Eroticism at its best........2000-07-04

I guess I should start off with this is NOT pornography or obscene. The plot ? Simple enough: It follows the adventures of two (beautiful) ladies, who are prostitues..Or actully, they resemble more along the lines of "call girls".

One is from Paris, the other from Munich. The film itself is actully beautiful to look at - The city lights of these areas have never looked so exotic. The black & white photography just adds to the mood, along with the (dated) 60s soft jazz sound - BUT IT WORKS !

As far as the sex/nudity goes, there is nothing here that can't be shown later at night on your local PBS station. There are flashes of nudity here & there, but its not exploitive. It shows women mostly as bodies of ART, and not sex objects. The sex in the film is very subtle, but I seem to think that with an imagination, it becomes VERY erotic.

This film is actully very tender and deals with issues that COULD be obscene, but in this film - they are handled with care.

Unfortunately, some of the acting is sub-par, the dubbing is fair...I have seen worse..MUCH worse. But if your into the early 60s B&W moody, artistic, film noir style (with a touch of eroticism) - THIS IS FOR YOU.

Very well done - I just wish more erotic film directors would follow the same path, as this gem of a movie. It's never cruel, rude or discusting.

5 out of 5 stars Yay for Powerpuff Girls!.......2004-11-07

This is a hilarious cartoon series that adults can enjoy watching with their kids (rather than being annoyed)...well, actually the violence is a bit questionable for younger kids--the first time I ever saw the Powerpuff Girls, they were beating up Mojo Jojo, and punching his nose caused red blood to shoot out!

Well, funny cartoon. Lots of clever jokes (many of which most kids probably won't understand).

Annoyingly, as some viewers have pointed out, the episode selection is somewhat haphazard. On vol. 2 ("Down 'n' Dirty"), the first episode ("Birthday Bash") has Princess already in prison, and then four episodes later she's *introduced* in "Stuck Up, Up and Away." (It was NOT a "revealed origen" episode.)

If you want to use "educational value" as an excuse to get the Powerpuffs Girls on DVD, do what I did: Get the Hong Kong editions (Region 3; yay for region-free DVD-players!). As near as I can tell, they're identical to the U.S. editions, except that there's ACTUALLY a choice of language selection (English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Thai) and subtitles (ENGLSIH, Chinese, Thai, and Bahasa). (They're even packaged in the same crappy snap cases, which is unusual for Hong Kong DVDs.) It's a lot of fun to watch a familiar show dubbed in another language, especially when it's something as silly as the Powerpuff Girls. Educational, too, if you're learning a second language.

Each disk has special features, usually bonus cartoons, but either I'm lacking some special software or else there are some serious misprints on the boxes, because I haven't been able to find any of the DVD-ROM features (not even on the U.S. edition of "Powerpuff Bluff" that I once rented).

In any case, highly recommend for anyone who likes funny cartoons.

5 out of 5 stars For Me and My Girls.......2002-12-05

Its somthing we can watch together. I find some childrens shows Mind numbingly boring but this is one that we can watch together.
there are things that go over thire heads like all the puns in the Beat-alls but I like it.Now if Only Dexters Lab and Courage the Cowardly Dog would come out on DVD we would be set.

    5 out of 5 stars Ha-ha! Very inventive!.......2002-10-30

Well, what can I say? I'm a grown man, but who says grown men can't enjoy cartoon? These Powerpuff girls are hilarious! So what if they win every battle? It's not something you take seriously like Justice League or something, and these are certainly not trying to be a new Justice League or X-Men. It's just a sublimely nutty series that pokes fun at the superhero mold, all thw while commenting on pop culture and contemporary America. The plots are actually pretty clever--there's always something in there that you wouldn't find in the ordinary cartoon, whether you're talking about Johnny Bravo or Dragonball Z. This is delightful cartoon WEIRDNESS at its finest! But if you really want something, check out the movie, which should be on video in a few months. Until then, adore the innocence, exhilirate in the brutality, and laugh your head off with the Powerpuff Girls. What'll they think of next?

    1 out of 5 stars ENOUGH POWERPUFF!.......2002-10-01

When will they stop with the annoying "Powerpuff Girls" anyway?? They have no weakneses, every battle is won all the time, and they DON'T save the world but a ...-headed city called "Townsville" which doesn't even exist! I understand that they are the super-hero(ines) of the show, but they can at least lose here and there. I mean, come on! Superman has a weakness with Kryponite, while the Z-fighters from "Dragonball Z" lose once and a while. In other words, it's always too easy for those little brats, so what's the point?! They're always gonna win. "And so once again the day is saved, and so once again the day is saved, and so and so and so." ARRGH! Shuddap already. It's just TOO predictable. Plus, they don't even have knuckles nor fists when they punch so how can they hit THAT HARD??? They actually look more like dolls really. lol. Another problem that REALLY gets me P.O'd is that everything on the Cartoon Network seems to be about powerpuffs. "Powerpuff Girls" this, "Powerpuff Girls" that. "The Powerpuff Girls" is NOT the only popular show on that channel. Everyone's forgeting about "Dexter's Laboratory", "Ed, Edd n Eddy", "Johnny Bravo", and even the un-organized story to "Courage, the Cowardly Dog". These one's at least have better animation quality and doesn't look like something drawn by a 2-year-old. What I mean is, STOP PUTTING THE POWERPUFFS ON THE SPOTLIGHT ALL THE TIME!!! There are much better shows anyway, so why not put "Ed, Edd n Eddy" or "Johnny Bravo" on DVD for a change? That would be pretty cool really. Those shows are funnier and a whole lot more interesting than the powerpuffs (which is as fun as staring at a pile of ...!)So could you PLEASE try something else for a change like an EEnE("Ed, Edd n Eddy")DVD with the first complete season or something like that. I think it would be awesome, because the Eds can crack me up for 24/7 compared to the powerpuffs. I hope that one day they will release something like this on DVD and/or video. Just remember folks, the powerpuffs AREN'T the ones who should take the glory from other shows, especially when those artists obviously worked harder(and I do mean HARDER!) at trying to animate than those who draw powerpuffs. So why not give them some credit?

4 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Powerpuff Girls.......2002-07-04

...The Powerpuff Girls is not another standard animated superhero TV series with cute moppets. First, the writers of the Powerpuff Girls ensure that the stories are written well and respect the viewer's intelligence instead of pandering to morons (a common mistake found in most animated TV series). Second, the better stories on this TV series show some common situations that a kid can relate to and how to resolve them without being too preachy. Third, there are lots of warped humor, hip contemporary references, sight gags, bad jokes, and hidden puns (e.g., Ms. Bellum's home address in "Something's a Ms."or each Powerpuff Girl using an eyebeam near the end of "The Main Event") found throughout these episodes. For these reasons, both children and adults will find this TV series fun to watch.

To honor the release of the Powerpuff Girls Movie, this review looks at the Powerpuff Girls Power Pack, the DVD boxed set that collects the first 3 Powerpuff Girls DVDs: "Powerpuff Bluff", "The Mane Event", and "Down `n' Dirty". In addition to over 5 hours of Powerpuff Girls TV episodes, this boxed set has some nice bonus features...

Get this boxed set if you love the Powerpuff Girls (or know someone who does) but have none of these DVDs in the video collection. This boxed set makes a nice birthday or Xmas present for any serious Powerpuff Girls fan.

If you don't know if you like the Powerpuff Girls, I recommend that you watch the Powerpuff Girls Movie (which tells how the Powerpuff Girls became the local superheroines of Townsville) followed by any three of the standout episodes on the above list from the Cartoon Network or any Powerpuff Girls video before deciding. But be forewarned: You may wind up enjoying the Powerpuff Girls after watching the third episode.
