4 out of 5 stars So glad this is on DVD!.......2007-08-04

We don't have cable/satellite so I didn't get to see this on TV. I was so happy to find this at Netflix. This is such a special opportunity to get to be a part of such a touching memorial of a one-of-a-kind man. There will never be another like him. He really did change our world. The great thing about this service is that, although you will cry, it isn't all heavy and depressing, there are plenty of laughs to be had too, as some of Steve's friends share funny stories about him, and some of the more humorous TV clips of Steve are played. My favorite part was when Steve's daughter Bindi delivered her speech about life with her dad. What a wonderful little girl she is, no wonder Steve was so proud of her! My *least* favorite part of this DVD were the blips featuring American celebrities...I cringed every time one came on. (Cameron Diaz? Justin Timberlake? Kevin Costner? Steve Harvey? I seriously doubt these people made much of a difference in Steve's life.) Steve's wife Terri was so visibly devestated and that was soooo sad. She truly has lost the love of her life, and the animals have lost their best friend.

P.S. Don't miss the "Interview" in the special features.

5 out of 5 stars cry, but laugh, too.......2007-07-18

I was prepared to cry while watching this video, since it's a memorial service, but I was pleasantly surprised to find myself laughing as well. The "flub" clips and the like were welcome reminders of the other side of Steve--the fun-loving practical joker, and other clips showed the passionate Wildlife Warrior. The interviews included on the DVD were an unexpected bonus that answered a lot of questions for me.

5 out of 5 stars A worthy tribute.......2007-05-23

Steve Irwin was one of the greatest people that the world has ever known. This DVD reflects that. Be prepared to cry, no matter who you are.

5 out of 5 stars Missing more of Steve.......2007-05-06

I ordered and received 2 dvd copies of Steve Irwin's Memorial Tribute. One was a gift to my best friend and the other for my household. I played my dvd and part way through, it stalled. There's an error on the disc but since it's opened, I can't return it. I haven't played it since, although I would love to. So -- missing more of Steve is appropriate.

5 out of 5 stars Steve Irwin - "Croc's Rule!".......2007-05-03

I saw this DVD and I thought that Steve Irwin was the best wildlife personality I have ever seen. He was very passionate about his work. Seeing his family at the memorial service was really touching and said so much about how they loved Steve. Bindi was so strong! I can't believe how much she is like her father.
Watching the scenes of Steve in action was so cool. He wasn't afraid and was in complete control. I loved Stve Irwin and I agree he definitely changed our world. - B.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't do the Book Justice........2005-12-05

Frankly, I was disappointed with the video. It seemed rather dull to me, in comparison to reading the book itself, which I thought unique, entertaining, and hilarious. Then, I am a rather animated reader to my students with voices, etc. It is a complicated read, so if your not up to it, buy the companion tape to follow along. Laurie Keller is one of my favorite authors.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Anthology.......2005-10-24

This tape is mesmerizing for kids and adults alike. I thought the art and music in America the Beautiful was incredible, and the musical biography of Woody Guthrie was powerful and touching. This tape is more educational than entertaining for kids, but it's enough of the latter to keep them interested. The Scrambled States are clever and subtle.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars in read-along mode, but only 3 stars in default mode.......2005-01-13

We have 4 children (from 4-8). This DVD allows for optional read/sing along, which if used, enhances each of the individual presentations immensely. All of my kids enjoy the DVD, but it's particularly great for patriotic learning occasions (as mentioned by another reviewer). The full length Aretha version of the Star Spangled Banner is alone worth the price! Remember that the read/sing-a-long version must be chosen from "extras" on the dvd menu since it is not the default mode.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful tribute to the USA.......2004-09-08

It always amazes me how people see things differently (see other review.) I agree that this is not one of the more lighthearted & "catchy" Scholastic videos of the lot, but it has SO much to offer. This is an especially good choice for an older child. The cover story "Scrambled States of America" is hilarious and has many hidden humors within it that grown-ups will even appreciate. The other stories that the other reviewer referred to are anything but boring. Rarely do I want to sit & watch what my kids are watching, but I find that I can't resist this one. I couldn't believe my ears the other day, when I heard my 4 year old son singing the words to "This Land is Your Land." And I could NEVER consider Peter Spier's drawings to be boring!!! As a child I used to sit & stare at his books for hours on end. The animation to the "Star Spanled Banner" and all the verses that we usually never get to hear are absolutely BEAUTIFUL (sung by Aretha Franklin)!!! I get goose bumps & cry every time I watch it. This DVD is very educational. Bonus stories include John Henry and Johnny Appleseed. I have to admit, we don't watch this DVD as much as the others, but I love to pull it out on July 4th, Veteran's Day, election day, etc. I never feel guilty letting my kids watch the Scholastic Video Collection!

1 out of 5 stars Not One of Their Best.......2004-06-26

The first illustrated story about the scrambled states keeps your interest, but the two other illustrations are totally musical, the songs are too long, and get boring. Doesn't hold your interest. Not one of Scholastics' better videos.

An exam of the Political rise of the Evangelicals ,and the election of a President.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Starts out good and objective, ends up as a blatant propaganda tool........2007-08-25

This was a very strange documentary. The first half is a very straightforward, objective and informative history of the evangelical influence on US politics from circa 1950. But by the last half all objectivity is thrown out the window and it turns into a very blatant promotional movie for George W. Bush and his handling of the 9/11, the Iraq War, etc., ending with Bush waving the flag and an interviewee saying he hopes God still has a plan for George W. Bush to help the world.

Watch it if it's on TV, but I wouldn't recommend spending money on the DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Unbiased but still one-sided.......2007-06-08

Before viewing "With God on Our Side," I suspected the title might be ironic or downright sarcastic. The film, I suspected, would seek to skewer George W. Bush and the Christian right/evangelical movement. As it turns out, I was seriously wrong. This film is neutral and allows its subjects (mostly Christians) a forum free from ridicule.

"With God on Our Side" is really two films that coexist rather comfortably. On the one hand, it is a history lesson, seeking to explain the rise of evangelical Christian political power and George W. Bush's place in the White House. Note that I said "explain," not "justify." On the other hand, the film is an examination of the George W. Bush presidency and, more particularly, the role of Bush's faith in that presidency. The point, I think, is that one cannot understand the latter without an understanding of the former.

Thus it is that we are taken from Nixon to Carter, Bush to Bush, seeing the roles that faith and morality played in the various campaigns. The subjects are, almost without exception, true believers, by which I do not mean in the Bible or God or any particular religion but do mean in the role evangelical Christians have claimed, at times to the incredulous disbelief of the mainstream media. Pat Robertson, Billy Graham, and Jerry Falwell all have significant time on screen. Political insiders discuss candidly their decisions vis-à-vis the growing power of evangelicals. I found most of these comments to be quite interesting and informative--up to a point.

The point comes about two-thirds of the way through the film, at which point things became just too repetitive for me. Perhaps because the George W. Bush presidency is current and its flaws and contradictions manifest, I found the uncritical examination of the subject to be unsatisfying. The basic premise of the film seems to be that evangelical Christians have been duped too many times. First, Nixon's law-and-order campaign appealed, but the man himself proved to be unsatisfactory. Then the Carter profession of his faith was appealing until his support of the proposed Equal Rights Amendment. Reagan was the next shining star until his politics proved too pragmatic. So Pat Robertson made a run for the presidency only to be beaten by George H.W. Bush, in part because of the timing of scandals among other television preachers (Jim Bakker, for example). Clinton came next, of course, and only mobilized evangelicals to replace him.

This history is a bit too tidy, though. It fails to account for Clinton's second term or the fact that George W. Bush lost the popular vote in 2000. This last fact is one that I wish the film had explored in more detail. Some of the religious figures in the film assure us that they believe God was acting through the Supreme Court, whose decision in Bush v. Gore for all intents and purposes established Bush as the president elect. If, as they say, God was guiding the election, why did Bush lose the electoral vote and ascend to the presidency in a fashion that gave him relatively little power? Why would not God have chosen to guide the voters' hands rather than the justices'? Unqualified statements of faith, whether in God or in Bush, are not especially informative. There are too many of these and not enough people trying to reconcile their faith with the problems of the current presidency, from the corruption to the fighting in Iraq and, indeed, the reason for the war to begin with.

I give the film four stars because it does present a history lesson that is not generally available in many mainstream fora, but I do not think the film, objective as it is, deserves a fifth star since it fails to delve deeply enough or present opposing viewpoints.

3 out of 5 stars If God did exist..........2007-03-30

...whatever the names/aliases used by those who pretend to believe in such a thing, He would never have allowed the existence of Bushs nor any fanatic zealots who have been thinking for 2,000 years that their superstition is better than the others. Until the beginning of christianity there never was any religious wars, and, not only no one ever murdered anybody to demonstrate their god was kinder than the others, but, since Sumer (about 6,000 years ago), every civilisation (a word that should not be used any longer) has adopted (most of the times by adapting their names) gods from others.

Civilized people should put a sign on their doors or fences "Beware of the god".

1 out of 5 stars All Right.......2006-09-30

Ignore those who claim this is an even-handed doc. It's a promotional film for the christian right thinly disguised as investigative journalism. It would have you believe, as many christians do, that the corruption and incompetence of the dimwit currently pretending to be president is easily overlooked so long as he talks about Jesus in public. A chilling view the triumph of superstition and fear over sanity.

3 out of 5 stars Illuminating, but hollow.......2006-07-30

WGOOS is an examination of the rise of conservative Christians (especially the Moral Majority) as a political force in America over the last 40 years. It uses interviews with some of the movement's heavy hitters -- Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Chuck Colson, Ralph Reed and others -- to discuss the movement's ups, downs and political maturation. The film seems intended as a critique of the movement. In this it fails, depicting these men (and they are all men!) on their turf, with no agenda other than to bring Christ to the nation. But there's little examination that the "Christ" they are talking about is pro-American, pro-capitalism and pro-conservative. If there's a lack of balance in the film, it's that there is almost no voice to oppose the self-sanctifying stories these men tell of themselves. It would have been helpful to the ordinary viewer, for instance, had voices from the religious center or left be added to challenge the conservative interpretation of Jesus and the gospels. It would have been helpful too had the film shown more clips from the TV shows these men run. Falwell's claim that the ACLU and lesbians (among others) were to blame for 9/11 was included, but little other spectacular and disturbing material. As it is, the men seem quaint and passionate about their faith, but little more.

The second part of the movie focused on the rise of George W. Bush as the latest hope of religious right to push their agenda. The movie makes a strong case for Bush's sincerity as a believing Christian. After seeing Bush praying and preaching and talking about God, it's hard to believe him to be completely cynical on the subject. The film buttresses the case for Bush the believer, but fails to note behaviors or positions at odds with that image. Bush's consistent support for tax cuts for the wealthy, for instance, ought to strike Christians as a bit out of the gospel mainstream. Indeed, the film is so careful about the topic that it comes across as almost worshipful - inadvertently providing us with an idyll to George W. Bush as God's choice for America.

The film was strongest when it put the viewer inside the mind of conservatives as they watched the parade of recent presidents. It was painful to watch Jimmy Carter, a man of strong morals and deep evangelical convictions, try to support a woman's right to choose. With religious conservatives equating abortion with murder, his embrace of this party's pro-choice plank must have seemed positively scandalous. The footage of Ronald Reagan with beaming conservative religious leaders showed their giddiness at having achieved power -- just before they realized that while Reagan used them to get elected, he would follow his own path. The film also scored when it portrayed the bewilderment of the media establishment when faced with a longstanding movement they knew nothing about. It was hilarious to see anchor John Chancellor talk about evangelicals as though they were a newly-discovered tribe of headhunters from the mountains of Borneo.

All in all, WGOOS provided interesting insights into a movement that has done much to shape the political debate in the United States. Its greatest blunder is to allow the movement's own leaders to define the film without adequately depicting the context in which the movement exists. Its greatest missed opportunity was to neglect a discussion of the brand of Christianity that informs these men, to ask why it is so popular, and to discuss why people of good will might disagree.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must have!.......2006-03-07

My daughter ordered this video knowing my love of American history. She's a devoted Democrat, like her mother. I'm more the
conservative-independent type, having supported Ross Perot and more
recently Ralph Nader, though that's an upsetting story to have to tell. I didn't sit down to view this Clinton reel with a great deal of
anticipation, but I was knocked out by what I discovered, or
re-discovered, as it were. And as a family it was enjoyable to go over
the issues, as they still effect us today.
With my daughter at the computer checking the latest statistics, her
and her mother did quite a tag-team number on me.
Perhaps it's due to being exposed to the bumbling of George W. Bush for
the past six years, but boy could Clinton deliver.
He gave a death-defying talk the night of the impeachment hearings, and
his knack for boiling down issues and making the viewer want to listen
and learn is most uncommon. It's one I've rarely found in any
politician, even my all-time favorite, FDR.
I'd rate this a B, maybe even a B+ as it wasn't given the Michael Moore
treatment and includes everything start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars The comprehensive Clinton collection..........2006-01-21

No political DVD library is complete without this title.

At nine and a half hours, it is hard to argue anything has been left out - though I challenge anyone to watch in a single sitting.

Vintage Productions have done a fabulous job with this DVD. I only hope it is successful enough to ensure a Presidential State of the Union collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-11-15

I enjoyed thoroughly the Vintage Clinton DVD. It was a present for my 20th birthday and I have watched it many times thus far.
The DVD came in the mail on time and I am one pleased customer.

5 out of 5 stars A moving tribute to the descendants of Italy.......2005-01-09

"Italians in America - Our Contribution" is a documentary tribute to the descedents of Italy who made their homes in the United States. It contains many interviews with high profile Americans of Italian descent, from Robert Loggia to Geraldine Ferraro to Pat Cooper (whom I had not known was Italian) interspersed with photographs and stock footage of important Italian-Americans from the last hundred years, from Marconi, to Frank Sinatra, to Joe DiMaggio to Madonna. (I was very thankful that Madonna, the singer, was included in the lineup. During my adolescence and teens Madonna was the epitome of Italian to me. Interestingly, Gay Talese suggests that Madonna's occasionally "sacrilegious" performances may have ancestral roots. Apparently, Madonna is descended from a region of Italy known for rebellion against the Catholic Church.) At first, this lineup of Italian-Americans seemed, well, a bit boring. I mean, yeah, so-n-so is of Italian descent - what's that mean to me? But after a while, it starts to kick in: Italians have contributed much more to this society than just pizza and the mafia. In fact, this very country and entire continent is named after an Italian: Amerigo Vespucci. After a while, the parade of Italian, faces, and brief biographies, becomes very moving.

"Italians in America - Our Contribution" ends with the touching reminiscence of an American man's early life with his Italian grandparents. The narrator (sorry, I can't remember his name) details how his early childhood was very Italian due to the influence of his Italian-born grandparents. All the old Italian traditions were there, the cooking, the distinctly Italian way of celebrating the holidays, the Italian way of praying, the overall awareness of themselves as Italians, as different from others in their neighborhood. With the passing of his grandparents, with the passing of several decades, the distinctly Italian way of living has vanished. The narrator notes that while his grandparents were Italian and he is an Italian-American, his grandchildren are now simply American, and his own way of life is now virtually indistinguishable from any other mainstream American. "And yet," notes the narrator, "there is something about me that still feels Italian."

By this point in the documentary I was literally on the verge of tears (have had to hold them back several times just writing this review), because I can relate. And it's very odd that I can relate because I grew up very far outside of any Italian tradition, have never been to Italy, and the only Italian I speak is what I learned from the concert video "Ciao Italia: Madonna Live In Italy" - and yet there's something about me that feels very Italian.

In fact, I have always felt more Italian than anything else, and I had always felt odd about that precisely because I have had such little direct experience with my Italian heritage. "Italians in America - Our Contribution" made me realize that there is nothing odd about the fact that I feel more Italian than anything else - because I AM more Italian than anything else. Half-Italian, to be exact.

5 out of 5 stars THe Slip.......2007-03-16

Super mind blowing visuals great dvd to get to know the band, cheaper than voliminal (which is also insane) but worth it!

3 out of 5 stars so so.......2006-07-30

I was wondering wether to give this a 2 star or a 3 but i considered that if it is slipknot it is at least a three star and if they have a 2 or 1 star it has to really suck. but when i got the dvd i thought cool a slipknot dvd. the minute i got it i watched it but i noticed some disturbing things such as some blurry scenes so some of the time you dont know what the heck is going on, the interview is short, the camera moves around alot during the live performances, and the worst thing is it's no more than 25 minutes long. I know i'm just a kid but i am a big fan of slipknot i'm even atempting to get one of the very few m.f.k.r. albums that i had to get from the U.K.! Anyway the dvd has some good parts like the spit it out home video and the surfacing live song was awesome audio wise but most of time the camera just cant stay still for more than 3 seconds! in my opinion this dvd wasn't good but it wasn't bad ethier.

5 out of 5 stars My friend was very pleased!.......2006-07-03

I ordered the item for a friend and his son who is a big fan of Slipknot. He now tells me his son is ecstatic about the DVD and I believe it was the right gift for a young fan of the band. No idea how it compares to their other DVDs and if this is the best buy, but it was worth it. Recommended!

This dvd is great, i am a very big slipknot fan and i also have the VHS version way b4 it even came out on DVD. I think its an awesome Vid it tells some stuff which is cool to know. I dont care what you all say you all suck. SlipKnoTs new DVD is coming soon

1 out of 5 stars what is this crap??.......2004-09-23

i have never seen sutch a crappy DVD. The introduction sucked, it was just the band saying their name, number, and what they play, followed by a 30 second clip of them playing. Plus you have no controll over what to hear, the numbers scramble themselves at a very fast rate and you just hit play and hope it plays the song you want. My words of wisdome are...buy disasterpieces, not this one. I have no other comments.

    Description

Slipknot: Up To Our Necks tells the complete and unauthorized story of this strange collective who exploded out of small town America and stormed the world. It includes exclusive and previously unseen film footage of Slipknot and in-depth interviews with those that worked closely with them, including other musicians who collaborated with them on individual solo projects, journalists, producers and old friends. Now for the first time this DVD reveals the story behind the madness and antics, which led this bunch of misfits to the top of the pack in the nu-metal era.

THIS STUFF WAS WEAKSAUCE-JUST BUY DISASTERPIECES AND WAIT UNTIL ANOTHER AUTHORIZED DVD FROM SLIPKNOT COMES OUT,I REGRET BUYING THIS GARBAGE,EVEN AT THE USED PRICE.

    4 out of 5 stars Good DVD.......2004-08-18

Well a lot of people is complaining about this DVD, they are complaining because there's no live performances or unmasked videos. Let me tell you that they don't have the idea of what an unauthorised biography is.
I can say that this 65 minute DVD is good if you really want to know the story of Slipknot (If you're a true fan). The Biography is good and complete, there are fun little facts about the band and also the DVD includes a Fan Quiz, to test your knowledge.
The reason why I'm giving this DVD 4 stars and not 5 is because there are some horrible mistakes in the section of the discography and bootlegs, they put some songs that have nothing to do with Slipknot, you'll see it when you buy this.

5 out of 5 stars A look at the beginning till now...........2004-07-20

This DVD was good I thought. It's an un-authorized biography of the band and it shows the band forming, coming together, and dealing with what came along the way. This video was created by the same people who made "Maximum Slipknot" the audio-biography. If you're new to Slipknot or wanted to know more about them, this is a great video to watch. It has interviews with old friends, acquaintances, band mates, and such. They reveal stories about the band members and how they came to become Slipknot. They also show pictures of the members (only some) without their masks. Although nothing on the footage is authorized by Slipknot themselves, it's still an in-depth look at who they are and what their peers think of them. They reveal some things in this video that I never knew, but have always wanted to know (such as sids tattoo'd fingers). In my opinion, if you're looking for a (sic) concert video or some Slipknot videos and/or work, this is not for you. This is simply a biography on the band, it's members, and their impact on the industry. I gave this 5 stars simply cuz it's informative, and it delivers what TRUE FANS (Maggots :D) want.....to have an inside look at who, what, where, when, how, and why Slipknot are.

2 out of 5 stars I expected more from even an un`authorized biography.......2004-07-18

I agree with Juan. It is not worth your $20. Disasterpieces was amazing, but even for an un`authorized biography, I expected more. First off, they spelled Jim Root`s name wrong. Secondly, the quiz section asks who is in the Murderdolls. It kept telling me the answer was Sid Wilson. Save up for an authorized DVD; that`s my suggestion.

The 1940s and '50s were an age of transition for American suburbs. This DVD encapsulates the essence of this period. It begins with a tour of New York 's streets as they were in 1941, peeps at the activities that go on round the clock in the city, captures the joys of people beginning to learn the use of 'modern' gadgetry like the deep freeze and finally takes you on a sightseeing trip to the neighborhood shopping malls. A wonderful viewing experience for all those who wish to see the American suburbs as they were in '40s and '50s.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, But Educational.......2006-05-22

This is the second DVD in the Suburbia series that I've ordered and its much less serious than the first one, but it is still very fun. The main premise is the same - the governement was trying to find ways to convince people in the 1950s to move out of the cities and get mortages to live in the new suburbia. This time around, however, the emphasis is on the gadgets and stuff that new homes would have. For example, they actually have to explain to people what a dishwasher is! It's very campy, but also taught me a good deal about things I used to take for granted.
