A love letter to movies (and the French new wave of the 1960s in particular), Bernardo Bertolucci's The Dreamers starts with a 1968 riot outside of a Parisian movie palace then burrows into an insular love triangle. Matthew (Michael Pitt, Hedwig and the Angry Inch), an expatriate American student, bonds with a twin brother and sister, Isabelle (Eva Green) and Theo (Louis Garrel), over their mutual love of film--they not only quote lines of dialogue, they act out small bits and challenge each other to name the cinematic source. Matthew suspects the twins of incest, but that doesn't stop him from falling into his own intimacies with Isabelle. As the threesome becomes threatened, Paris succumbs to student riots. The Dreamers aspires to be kinky, but the results are more decorative than decadent; nonetheless, the movie's lively energy recalls the careless and vital exuberance of Godard and Truffaut. --Bret Fetzer
Description
From Academy Award®-winning director Bernardo Bertolucci (The Last Emperor, 1987), comes an erotic tale of three young film lovers brought together by their passion for movies -- and each other. When Isabelle and Theo (Eva Green, Louis Garrel) invite Matthew (Michael Pitt) to stay with them, what begins as a casual friendship ripens into a sensual voyage of discovery and desire in which nothing is off limits and anything is possible. Featuring an engaging, seductive cast, The Dreamers is a ?spellbinding, provocative feast!" (Ebert & Roeper)
Customer Reviews:
I'll say this: it is pretty........2007-09-13
This is a very pretty film. Paris is as rich and gorgeous as ever, and the main trio of actors are beautiful (and you get to see plenty of them!) But the film suffers from a seeming need to make the characters "quirky" that winds up coming across as some cross between pretentious and weird. We got the film because it was supposed to be erotic, but...um?
I guess the bottom line is, I just didn't believe in these characters or their relationship -- it felt contrived, calculated for effect (the "shocking" relationship between the siblings, etc. And hasn't the "American falls in with decadent Europeans" thing been done to death by now?)
I'm sure if you're a fan of one or more of the actors, that's probably enough to carry you through. As I said, they are pretty, but that wasn't enough for me.
Beautiful........2007-08-24
This movie is utterly beautiful. Its beyond words as to how amazing this film actually is. Utterly disturbing yet it puts you into some sort of artsy trance. *full frontal from Michael Pitt* You so cannot go wrong with this film!!! XoXoX
The Dreamers or The Kinky?.......2007-08-24
I loved this movie! It is so packed with forbidden eroticism that it goes beyond taboo! But, it is not a bad kind of taboo.
The story centers around a young American film student studying in France. He doesn't have many friends, until one day he meets a beautiful girl at a rally and her off-standish brother. The siblings take the young American under their wing and eventually he moves in with them. It is during this time that he sees how "different" the siblings are.
During a late night bathroom run, he catches a glimpse of the brother and sister lying in the same bed nude. If you are schocked by this first erotic scene then you should definitley not watch the rest of the movie because it definitley doesn't get any milder. Although the plot is less than developed, the viewer is completely sucked in to the lives of the three major characters.
Though the siblings are weird and do things that normal brothers and sisters would never DREAM of doing, there is something extremeley natural and normal about it. As if seeing each other nude and during sexual acts is as normal as sharing a meal at the family dinner table. They portray the classic taboo of incest in a classy manner, if that is even possible.
I find myself unable to articulate just how good I thought this movie was. It shocked me from beginning to end, with behavior that I would normally find disgusting, but somehow found endearing in this movie. You just have to watch this movie for yourself!
Eva Green.......2007-08-14
The only reason to get this movie is for Eva Green. This woman has a body out of this world. She is the only reason I recommend this movie.
an extraordinary film although not for everyone.......2007-07-23
this is by far one of my favorite movies ever. i, however, tend to like movies that are very matter of fact as many french movies are, and movies that deal with sex and sexual issues. the very direct addressing of adolescent sexual awakening and confusion might be too much for people with with sex issue hang ups. but for people who are comfortable with very honest story telling this movie is a triumph.

The title is a mouthful, but Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story hits the winner's circle as a warm and inspiring family film. Ben Crane (Kurt Russell) is a Kentucky horse trainer who watches in horror as a championship filly breaks its leg during a practice run. Ordinarily that means curtains, but today Ben's daughter, Cale (Dakota Fanning), is at the track, and Ben impulsively buys the horse and loses his job in one fell swoop. The rehabilitation process is almost too much for a farm that's already struggling to survive in a modern economy, but the horse turns out to be a much-needed salve to the nearly broken family, including Ben's wife (Elisabeth Shue) and father (Kris Kristofferson). The cast is excellent, especially Fanning (who at age 11 has become a major star and was branded by Entertainment Weekly as the most powerful actress in Hollywood), and the film is well-paced by director-writer John Gatins and beautifully shot by cinematographer Fred Murphy. Surely the ultimate fate of the horse and the family won't surprise anyone, but young girls who love horses often don't need a surprise ending. They need a reason to cheer, and Dreamer delivers all the way. (Ages 6 and older: moments of horse peril) --David Horiuchi

Great family movie........2007-08-26
This is a very well acted, heartwarming, and inspiring story. The actors are top notch, and little Dakota Fanning steals the show. I recommend it for all families, with or without kids. It's just a feel-good movie for all.

JoBeth Williams plays an unfulfilled housewife who wins a trip to Paris after entering a short-story contest. Once there, she is hit by a car and wakes up believing she is the ingenious and brave heroine from her story. A series of misadventures leads her on a merry chase with fellow bumbler Tom Conti. The casting is a little dubious, but the ever adorable Conti gives this charm. It may rip off Romancing the Stone--without emulating that flick's witty dialogue or sexuality--but this appealing fluff remains a pleasant, if slight, diversion. --Rochelle O'Gorman
Description
In AMERICAN DREAMER, frustrated housewife and writer Cathy Palmer enters a mystery-writing contest and wins an all-expense-paid trip to Paris. Once there, she is struck by a car and awakens believing that she is Rebecca Ryan, the heroine in a wild spy adventure.
Customer Reviews:
I love this Movie.......2007-09-14
I love this movie!! I saw it when I was a little girl and still love it today. American Dreamer is about a housewife that always reads "Rebecca Ryan" Novels about a sexy female detective. Kathy, the main character, wins a trip to France to meet the author of her beloved novels. On her way to meet the novelist she gets in an accident, and wakes up in the hospital thinking she is Rebecca Ryan. The movie takes you along on her adventure of espianage, and love. I'm so glad this movie came out again, and on DVD. I looked several years ago and they stopped publishing it. If you are on the fence about this one, BUY it you will love it too.
Funny, funny, funny.......2007-08-27
This is absolutely one of my favorite movies. I could watch it over and over. And now it's been passed to the next generation, my kids love it too. Jobeth Williams is excellent. This movie is very funny and romantic (more funny than romantic). I recommend that everyone see it.
exciting.......2007-08-26
It is funny, hilarious, fast moving movie. In good taste and one that the whole family can watch without worrying if it is o.k. for the kida.
Romantic Getaway.......2007-07-03
I saw this movie in the 80's when it first came out. At that time, Romance Novels were very popular and this movie fed right into that trend. I'd never seen JoBeth Williams in a comedy before, and I thought she was wonderful! And I'd never seen Tom Conti in anything...but he was fantastic! Very funny, great timing and some of the best double takes and confusion I've ever seen! The supporting cast was good-and funny. I loved the story line: a bored housewife who loves romance novels wins a contest, leaves her family and goes to Paris (because her dumpy, boring husband refuses to go with her), and after being hit by a car, wakes up thinking she's the herione of a romance novel. It's a great way to get into all kinds of funny situations! In the end, she falls in love with her "partner in crime", brings down a drug dealer and stumbles into a rewarding new career as a writer. You can see it all coming, so there aren't many surprises there, but it's still alot of fun. Watching it now, it seems dated, but I still laugh and love it!
One of my all time fave's!.......2007-06-11
I saw this movie at the movie theater when it first came out and I loved it! It's one of the cutest movies I've ever seen. JoBeth Williams and Tom Conti are so perfect together ! There's not much that I can say that won't sound hokey, but it's a classic!

Product Description
Featuring interviews with filmmaking luminaries James L. Brooks, Nora Ephron, Carrie Fisher, Gary Ross, and many others, DREAMS ON SPEC follows three aspiring Hollywood writers as they pour their hearts into their spec(ulative) scripts, pitch their ideas to anyone who will listen, go to meetings, hold table reads, and work at low-level day-jobs -- all in the hopes of one day seeing one of their beloved creations made into a movie. The documentary offers a funny and compelling look at inspiration, creativity, and solitude in Hollywood. THE DVD EXTRAS include over 30 minutes of never-before-seen interviews with the superstar screenwriters featured in the film, including James L. Brooks, Nora Ephron, Gary Ross, Carrie Fisher, Larry Karaszewski, Scott Alexander, and many others. THE REVIEWS have been extraordinary. Paul Guay, the co-writer of Liar Liar, called Dreams on Spec "one of the best films of the year." Steven de Souza, the writer of Die Hard, wrote: "As an insider's guide for screenwriters trying to crash the gates, 'Dreams on Spec' is - pardon the expression - pitch perfect." Men in Black screenwriter Ed Solomon said, "This is fascinating and extremely well-articulated stuff." Meanwhile, Entertainment Insiders raved that "this documentary makes you wish for a series" and Creative Screenwriting Magazine wrote, "The end result is a film that is educational for screenwriters at all levels, while being entertaining and universal enough to appeal to viewers who don't know their INT. from the EXT."
Customer Reviews:
A must see!.......2007-07-17
"Dreams on Spec" is a must see for any movie buff, aspiring screen writer or for anyone who enjoys the journey of a film's creation progressing from idea to reality. The transition from famous Hollywood writers to unknown aspiring talent is both fast paced and engaging. Nora Ephron's anecdotes are as charming as her films and Carrie Fisher is her usual bundle of wit and energy, just to mention a few excerpts. Joe, David, and Deborah embody all of the heart, sacrifice, and passion that go into the screen writers attempts in selling their story. I highly recommend "Dreams on Spec" to all those who think they have what it takes to write and sell a script, respect people who do, or dream that they can actually achieve it themselves.

An Intimate Portrait Of A Literary Legend.......2001-07-30
F. Scott Fitzgerald defined a generation. His extravagant lifestyle and unsurpassed talent as a writer made him one of the twentieth centuries most intriguing figures. Yet underneath the glitzy persona lie a vulnerable man with a frail ego and a tendency toward self-destruction. A & E Biographies takes a candid look at this multi-faceted man in the well-researched video presentation of F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Great American Dreamer.
Beginning with a history on the roaring twenties, the prime time of Fitzgerald's life and work, this documentary span the era that influenced the man and gives a detailed account of the man who symbolized youth in a time of decadence. Fitzgerald's love of writing, love of liquor, and tumultuous marriage to his beautiful wife Zelda are all thoroughly covered in this 50-minute video. Rare photographs, film clips, and interviews with confidantes, family members, and other literary greats such as Joseph Heller, help to bring to life the story behind F. Scott Fitzgerald. Any fan of his won't be disappointed, and any student, who is required to read his work, will find special meaning behind the words after watching this biography. My highest recommendation.
It's worth your time, teachers.......2001-01-19
I usually show this video before or during my unit on The Great Gatsby; doing so makes the time period of the '20s come a little more alive and the type of characters Fitzgerald writes about a little more understandable and believeable. Especially strong is the characterization of Zelda -- it's easier to teach the "Fitzgerald heroine" concept after they've seen the type of woman to whom Fitzgerald was attracted. An added plus is Edward Herrmann (Klipspringer in the Redford/Farrow video) and his commentary, as well as commentary by Scott and Zelda's granddaughter.

Originally released in 1984, the second Urusei Yatsura feature offers characters created by Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma 1/2) and a screenplay and direction by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell). As the perpetually lecherous Ataru and his friends prepare for a carnival at Tomobiki High School, they gradually realize the days are literally repeating themselves. Any effort to break the pattern dumps them back where they started. They later discover their town has been reduced to a circle of land a few miles across, poised on the back of a gigantic sea turtle--a reference to "Urushima Taro," a Japanese Rip Van Winkle story. Takahashi and Oshii weave elements from other Japanese folk tales into their science fiction adventure. Although she's described as an alien princess, Lum has many of the attributes of an oni (demon), including horns, the ability to fly, and a tiger-skin costume (although hers is a bikini). The character designs reflect an interesting moment in animation history, when the influence of Western TV shows was giving way to the familiar anime style. Lum has large eyes and long viridian green tresses, but Ataru and his pals sport more Caucasian-looking hair and features. Unfortunately, the good-natured story runs out of steam after about an hour, and the film falters to a conclusion in an annoying series of false endings. Unrated; suitable for ages 12 and up: minor nudity, profanity, and cartoon violence. --Charles Solomon

A Beautiful Anime: A World Of Reality and Fantasy!.......2007-04-23
I am a late comer to anime. Yes, I own a few, which are some of the better known anime. One in particular that I was really impressed with was this anime, "Urusei Yatsura" aka: "Beautiful Dreamer" Amazing that an anime as old as this one [1984 release] has been able to hold up to time so well too. I first saw this anime back in 1990, but did not purchase it until 2004. There have been some very good reviews of this film, and it is deserving of its high praise. I have seen many anime films, some I like, some are okay, while others, such as this film are a real treat and worth adding to ones collection. As I stated in the beginning, I am relatively new to anime. I have seen several, but not a lot. This one belongs in your collection whether or not you are a fan of anime. It's really that good!
Moreover, this is one anime that I would have loved to have seen on the big screen in a good theatre. I saw the film in a cheesy dive that did not have the best of sound equipment or subtitles. [Many of the subtitles were difficult to read]. I understand that this film is the second of part of a six film collection. Unfortunately, I have yet to see the others in the series. However, this one is great even if there were no others in the series. I will have to seek out the others some time. I found the anime to be very funny and entertaining, yet also very philosophical too. I do not wish to rehash what had already been said by many reviewers, and more importantly, I do not wish to spoil this film for those who have not had the chance to view it yet. However, the films story centers on reality and dreams. What is real? And more importantly; What is love? The film starts off with the changing of the world, where events seem to repeat themselves: And eventually result with disappearing people, streets and the changing of reality itself. But what is reality?
I have to admit, that when I first saw the film I did not understand some of the film; with both reality and fantasy blurred, and I had to view it again to catch some of the films meaning. Therefore, it was a real treat to finally purchase this film a few years ago. [repeated viewings are necessary]. And I never tire of the repeat reviewing. Also, one more thing, the musical score in the film is great. It seems to go with the film. Also, do not let the age of the film deter you from purchasing [or renting the film] as the animation is just terrific. I highly recommend this film to all viewers. It is well worth purchasing, and if you are not sure, then at least rent the film. You will not be disapointed. I know I was not when I first saw the film, and when I eventually purchased it. Highly recommended!
amazing.......2007-03-05
My friend first saw this film back in '98 when Sci-Fi channel aired it on their "Saturday Anime" programing block; for two weeks he could not stop yammering on about it. Four years later he picked up this DVD and called me over to watch it. I had seen some of the TV series before, but Movie 2 amazed me. It captures all the slapstick elements of the show, but they flow with in the context of a deep plot where the same day repeats over and over, much like the film Groundhog Day. As clues begin to surface that might shed some light on the strange occurances, people begin to disappear.
This film is probably the most popular title in the UY universe and for good reason. With the exception of a few characters, a viewer can jump in totally ignorant to the prior portions of the series. Also, it has a nice balance to the light hearted antics of the TV show, but combines that beautifully with the deeper existentialist trappings of the plot. The ending is satisfying, although the home stretch does drag some. All in all its a great buy for some one who has had some experience with anime, but its not a good starting point for the uninitiated.
This DVD is the only title not put out by Animiego, but it was translated for CPM by the same team, so the continuity and translation is exicelent. This also makes it the only one that is dubbed. its only in fullscreen which might bother some people.
sorry for non-japanese speaker fans........2005-12-05
When I watched this movie in 1984. I stayed in the cinema for more than ten hours straight to watch the same movie three or four times that day. (In Japan, once you paid admission you could stay in the cinema until you were physically out of the cinema.) 21.5 years and a few movies later, I have never seen any movie that gives me more goosedumps that this movie. And many animation fans over 30 years old and a few greatest animation creators in Japan agree with me, including original Gundams' creator.
Urusei Yatsura was popular even when it was on the comics, so when it was recreated as TV series in the early 80s, it had got experienced voice actors (dubbers?). And without their unique voices, expressions, dialogs, and strange dialects you are experiencing this movie only by 50%. I watched the english version and I was impressed the work of translation, however unless you know the language, it's difficult to enjoy every aspect of it.
Simply the best.......2005-10-20
It's hard to describe the effect that first seeing this movie had on me the first time I saw it five years ago, but it's something that's sucks with me at the very least.
This was the first bit of UY I ever saw, and I quickly become addicted to the series because of it. The animation is wonderful, the characters are all nifty, and the mysteries that abound in the story are all intriguing. I sometimes find mindself just randomly whistling the music from this movie as it's so...so simply wonderful.
Still Riding the Turtle's Back..............................2005-04-07
I'm not a huge anime fan, but there was some great imagery here. Scenes linger in your mind, touching on some great memory you know you had but can't remember. You will begin to care abou the characters, and yearn to be part of their "perfect world." Dealing with how to cope with a natural (or unnatural, in this case) calamity is what makes this a survivalist's story: the ability to live and have fun doing it. Whoever made this needs to be acredited with making a modern masterpiece, because the experiance of watching Beautiful Dreamer is inspiring and intense. If you close your eyes you can almost see the broken ruin of Tomobiki high. I could see myself under the big sun above Tomobiki, listening to funky 80's japanese pop while taking in a beefbowl with a smile on my face, waving to Lum and Ataru as they tear up the lake in their Kawasakis.
