Directed with consummate skill by Terence Young, the second James Bond spy thriller is considered by many fans to be the best of them all. Certainly Sean Connery was never better as the dashing Agent 007, whose latest mission takes him to Istanbul to retrieve a top-secret Russian decoding machine. His efforts are thwarted when he gets romantically distracted by a sexy Russian double agent (Daniela Bianchi), and is tracked by a lovely assassin (Lotte Lenya) with switchblade shoes, and by a crazed killer (Robert Shaw), who clashes with Bond during the film's dazzling climax aboard the Orient Express. From Russia with Love is classic James Bond, before the gadgets, pyrotechnics, and Roger Moore steered the movies away from the more realistic tone of the books by Ian Fleming. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars SPECTRE strikes back!.......2007-09-17

After Dr. No was killed by James Bond in the first movie, the evil SPECTRE organization is out for revenge. In this installment we are introduced to the group's leader, Ernst Blofeld, who personally asks that Bond be terminated. We are also introduced to Desmond Llewellyn, who portrayed "Q" until his untimely death after "The World Is Not Enough" in 1999.
This movie is one of the best in the series. It has a down-to-Earth plot that turns into a Cold War thriller that resembles the 007 stories that Ian Fleming narrates in his books. Even though the gadgets begin in this movie, Bond's multi-purpose briefcase is believable, unlike most of the gadgets from the Moore era, and only adds to the classic feel that this film carries. Lastly, Robert Shaw fights Bond in one of cinema's most memorable fight scenes, and is a fearful and dangerous villain: cunning, lethal and cold.
I strongly suggest that you watch this movie, and if you are a Bond film collector, this is a must have.

3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2*s-A step down from Dr.No.-but still pure Connery Bond-.......2007-09-16

After the boffo debut of Sean Connery in Dr.No,its' popularity insured another release. In fact the first three were to see a year to year release.
This second release"From Russia With Love" really takes a hard tack on the cold war tensions extant at that time. However unlike Dr.No which took place in pretty much the same locale, this film was to start a trend which took Bond to muliple locations within a single movie.Depending on the movie this could be a plus;but in this case I found it to be a minus. We get so many locations that the plot becomes too involved and at times makes it a bit sluggish.
The movie opens a little differently than its' predecessor. To start we get the famous "eye shot" piece right off. Then we move into the short prologue. This has Bond seemingly in a large garden maze looking for,but really being stalked by,a villain called Red Grant, played menacingly by Robert Shaw.Tension builds nicely until, what's this?.....our hero is killed! The action stops,a yell is heard and the camera pulls back to reveal that what we have witnessed wasn't really Bond but a surgically altered look a like that was "done in".And it was all a training exercise for villain Grant.
At this point the credits start to roll with the wonderful theme music, but no vocals. The vocals were later sung during the end credits by Matt Munro. Also in Dr No the opening credits showed a few girls dancing in coloured shadows. In this one we see more girls'distinct and showing more flesh;something that would be "improved" upon in future Bond films.
The film opens in Venice,Italy where a chess championship is taking place between a Canadian and Czech player(Ironically the movie goes full circle as it ends up back here in the end). The Czech player during the match is summoned to the criminal organization SPECTRE run by one Dr.Blofeld who(face unseen until a later film)would sit in his chair stroking his white cat;pulling all the strings to the subsequent illegal activity that Bond would try to quell. He puts in motion a plan(by the Czech player) assisted by one Colonel Kleb(played by Lotte Lenya-yes,the same one referenced in "Mack the Knife"!)to trap and kill Bond.Colonel Kleb it seems is a former SMERSH agent(Russian) but, unbeknownst to all but a few people, has defected to SPECTRE.
One Tatiana Romonov played by Daniela Bianchi is recruited by Kleb to be the "defecting" agent that Bond will contact to obtain a "Lektor" decoding machine.Bond gets his usual "M" briefing before heading out on his assignment and we are introduced to one "Boothroyd" played by Desmond Llewllyn."Boothroyd" would become a permanent fixture in the Bond pics as "Q",Bond's man of a thousand gadgets.
Bond heads off to Istanbul to meet one Kareem Bey played wonderfully by Pedro Armendariz, his contact there.Kareem is a very influential man.In fact he has many sons who help to run his local "syndicate".Before long both are off to a local gypsy camp to see a contact there.Red Grant(Shaw) is now back in the picture following Bond's every move.In fact during an ambush at the camp Grant actually saves Bond's life, but only in order to later dispose of him himself.
After the ambush Kareem gets revenge on the man he knows is responsible for the ambush. In town there is an overlarge English sign of a(real)film called "Call me Bwana" starring Bob Hope and Anita Ekberg. The poster consists mainly of Anita's large face.Kareem shoots his adversary while climbing out of a concealed window that opens up in her mouth.Bond says in his usual style:"She should have kept her mouth shut".
Bond meets up with Tatiana as planned and they both "steal" the Lektor.Kareem arranges a trip through the eastern block on a train to get Bond, the girl and the machine spirited to the west.Along the way much intrigue and fighting ensues.Kareem is killed and Grant(who has been dogging Bond all the way) kills and takes the place of a British agent in Zagreb,Yugolslavia.Of course Grant's real identity is eventually revealed and after a harrowing struggle Bond narrowly escapes certain death.
Farther on Bond and Tatiana, who by now is in love with Bond(naturally!),disembark the train and overpower Grant's contact and steal his truck. In short order they are being pursued by a SPECTRE helicopter. The truck is disabled and they have to hoof it.What ensues is similar in nature to Hitchcock's "North by Northwest" where Cary Grant was divebombed by the plane. Here Connery gets harrassed in the same manner by the chopper, done very effectively. He eventually brings it down and they head to the coast. Here they commandeer a SPECTRE contact boat and head aross the Adriatic Sea to Venice. While there in a hotel waiting to leave the city for London Bond is set upon by Colonel Kleb(disguised as a maid) who Blofeld has dispatched to once and for all dispose of Bond...or else. Will she succeed? Will she regain possession of the all important Lektor decoding machine?More importantly in the end, will Tatiana help Bond or Kleb?
Here the movie ends and the vocals of the lovely theme music commence.
As you can tell by the plot synopsis I have given there is alot going on throughout this movie. For space sake I can only give you small details of course.Fleshed out this movie as I said at the start slows down a bit too much in many places such as the gypsy camp and on the train.I think it could have been tightened up a little more in the script and editing room. There are just too many little details we needn't have to have seen which unnecessarily pad it.
Having said that that doesn't make this movie poor by any stretch. It is a very action packed and charged movie that constantly thrives to keep the tension going throughout.A nice touch in that respect was the Robert Shaw character who is that constant and nagging unseen(by Bond)threat.
So even though,in my oppinion, not up to the level of its' predecessor "To Russia with Love" is still a very entertaining flick which you will still enjoy. And this new remastered edition is a delight to the eyes and ears. After all,it's a Connery Bond....what more does one need?

5 out of 5 stars From Russia With Love.......2007-09-13

Another great 007 flick, with Sean Connery. Great plot, great villians, great gadgets, and beautiul women. What more do you want? Another ageless film I could watch year after year.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best 007 movies!.......2007-06-28

Along with Goldfinger, this is probably the best of the early James Bond films. Sean Connery was excellent in it. The story and the cast is great. The fight scene on the train between Connery and Shaw is worth the price alone! A face paced, well thought out and entertaining film.

5 out of 5 stars From Russia With Love.......2007-06-27

This stylish second entry in the Bond franchise features a less cold-blooded, more dashing 007, played to the hilt with campy savoir faire by the ever-classy Connery. Young streamlines the action, too, and in the absence of fancy gadgets (those came later), gave audiences thrilling, well-orchestrated chases and clashes, culminating in a heart-racing death match between Connery and deadly, dyed-blond assassin Shaw aboard the Orient Express. The kittenishly seductive Romanova is fetching as Bond's dicey love interest, but German chanteuse Lenya has the most fun springing poisonous blades from her shoes. Racy, exhilarating, and loads of fun, "Love" breathes flashy new life into Ian Fleming's classic novel.

This quietly daffy comedy should have been an indie hit, but ended up ignored by audiences. Too bad; it's a wonderfully sustained caper movie about friends whose career choice is all wrong. Low-key Anthony (Luke Wilson) and high-strung Dignan (Owen C. Wilson--the two actors are brothers) are brought into a life of crime by Dignan's ambition to be a small-time thief. After a few amusingly laid-back trial burglaries, they (and a third buddy) find themselves over their heads when they hook up with an experienced crime boss (James Caan). Because this movie is so relentlessly deadpan, you really have to be dialed in to its brand of humor--but once there, Bottle Rocket shoots off plenty of sparks. Above all, Owen Wilson's portrayal of Dignan is a terrifically original comic creation; Dignan is so sincerely focused on his goals that he can't see how completely absurd his ideas are. Owen Wilson, who went on to supply similarly knuckle-headed performances in Armageddon and Permanent Midnight, wrote the screenplay with director Wes Anderson. --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars "you're gonna see a side of Dignan that you haven't seen before. A sick, sadistic side...".......2007-09-11

"Bottle Rocket (1996), the first feature by Wes Anderson has become a cult favorite, and made the names of Anderson and Wilson's (three brothers, Owen, Luke, and Andrew acted in the picture, and Owen, the self-proclaimed troublemaker co-wrote the script with Anderson) popular, and their fans waiting for more. BR is an offbeat crime/comedy about three friends, Dignan (Owen), Anthony (Luke), and Bob (Robert Musgrave) who tried to pursue the career of the professional criminals. If ever three screw-up characters were less suited for becoming tough guys, thieves or bank robbers, I am yet to see them on the screen. Of all three, Dignan takes the cake - his brazenness, ineptitude, clumsiness and lack of any sense of reality in the combination with the true belief that he was born to become a "made man" (or something like that) and that the local "godfather" Mr. Henry (James Caan in a very funny cameo) would take him and his friends seriously are absolutely adorable. Andrew Wilson, the oldest of three brothers has a small role as Bob's obnoxious older brother. I personally don't think that "Bottle Rocket" is a masterpiece and the best movie of that year but it certainly has got some very funny moments, especially in the beginning (Dignan helps Anthony to run from a mental hospital and soon they pull a job of robbing the local book store; Dignan interviews Bob for a position of a runaway driver) and in the end when three friends are sent by Mr. Henry to the biggest (and the most hilarious) heist that would be the apotheosis of their careers. Owen Wilson's Dignan is a reason enough to see the movie - so hilariously deadly serious about his absurd plans, schemes, and ideas he is.

4 out of 5 stars Early Wes Anderson Is Still Good Wes Anderson.......2007-08-27

Wes Anderson is probably one of my favorite quirky directors. With films such as The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Rushmore in his repertoire, I feel the "quirky" title to be appropriate. Best known for Rushmore (1998), Anderson's films have a unique edge to them. Definitely not in-your-face comedy, their impact is much dryer and subtler (I remember the nude gal in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou just being there because some nudity was needed. And I remember Bill Murray driving back and forth over his enemy's bicycle in Rushmore then placing it back in its bike rack and how I knew this would influence the battle yet-to-come).

I'd never heard of BOTTLE ROCKET until somebody pointed it out to me. Having enjoyed Rushmore tremendously, it came highly recommended. And after watching it, I can see why.

This is early Anderson, and a film that helped launch his inimitable movie style. Released in 1996 and starring the newly found Wilson brothers (Luke and Owen), it goes to show that Anderson knew how to pick a good script and good actors to round out a chuckle-fest.

Luke Wilson (My Super Ex-Girlfriend) is no stranger to Anderson films now, having been given the lead role here and later strong supporting roles in The Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore, Luke can celebrate his strong Anderson film trifecta and proudly point back to his roots in this film. Brother Owen (Cars) is one up on Luke in that he has performed in all of those, plus The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

Mental health issues abound for Anthony (Luke Wilson) and his buddy Dignan (Owen). In fact, Anthony has just been released from a voluntary psychiatric facility where he was resting after a nervous breakdown. Waiting for him in the bushes (literally) is Dignan, who believes Anthony is escaping from the psych ward instead via his own free will.

The two quickly go back to their old ways. They decide to return to a life of petty thieving and even do dry-runs by "robbing" Anthony's family's home in order to see if they still have their robbing edge. They also decide to take on the strangest heists (from meat packing plants to bookstores). Since neither of them own a car, though, they have to get a driver and they pick Bob Mapplethorpe (Robert Musgrave) simply because ...well ...he has a car. Their first felony occurs at the aforementioned bookstore and they make quick their getaway, leaving town and scurrying across the state. They end up at a motel in the middle of nowheresville and decide to hold up. But the trio quickly turns sour when a pretty young hotel maid name Inez (Lumi Cavazos) catches Anthony's eye. Speaking no English, the Central American goddess fails to realize how messed up yet in love Anthony is with her (partly due to the language barrier and partly do to Anthony's fumbling ways).

Word eventually comes to Bob (the driver) that a family member is in trouble and he has to return to town. Since he has the only car, Anthony and (more importantly) Dignan, flip out, telling him he can't leave. But he does and leaves Anthony and Dignan stranded at the hotel (which is fine with the love-struck Anthony). But Dignan wants to get out of there, so he devises a plan to steal a car and return to their lives of thievery. Not wanting to leave without his newfound love interest, Anthony tries to convince Inez to come with them. A misunderstanding ensues and he and Dignan are back on their debauched road. Eventually they take on a robbery at a meat packing plant and it goes horribly. Risking everything, eventually a choice has to be made about who stays behind -- and takes the risk of capture -- and who goes free.

It is the strange and quirky (there's that word again) that drives this film. Owen Wilson's character (Dignan) is obviously an extreme case of an excessive-compulsive. He plans out items to the nth degree, ensuring that everything is okay decades later. Anthony (Luke) struggles to regain some sense of normalcy in his life but keeps getting dragged back down by his bond with Dignan while being tugged the other direction by Inez.

In the end, all turns out bizarrely well. Dignan ends up where he belongs, Owen gets what he needs, and even Inez finds what she's looking for.

Certainly one of the less known Anderson films, this one still comes highly recommended, just not as highly as his more recent works.

5 out of 5 stars Better every time........2007-06-27

I love Owen and Luke. Every time I watch this movie I enjoy it more and more. I am so glad that I was able to find it.

Definit own if you have any luke or owen wilson films. Two middle class guys with a crazy outlook on life - that need something to do. luke commits himself to a mental hospital - at like 20 because he needs a break from life . . . then him and his friends rob a book store because they didnt want to live a normal life and wanted to gain street credit with this stunt - to get in this gang later - and make crime money. it all gets screwed up - check out punk drunk love ..

5 out of 5 stars Great Indie film!.......2007-04-15

This film is probably starting to make its way to mainstream with the commercial success of the Wilson brothers, Luke and Owen.
This film is perhaps one of the best independent films I have ever seen. Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson (who co-wrote with Owen W. and directed the film) paired on several films of less-than-popular stature. All of them are quirky at worst and extremely entertaining at best. As a note, I would recommend all of them as spectacular, with slight hesitation on "The Royal Tannenbaums".
This film in particular was a showcase of how good writing can make up for subpar acting. The actors in this movie were not great, but the story, the words, they were fantastic. Basically, a guy gets bored with life and wants some adventure and he drags his buddies along as he attempts to become a criminal. Things don't go as planned, but the results are very funny.
I am not a huge fan of big hollywood type films, so I have lost interest in most of the films of the Wilson brothers, but this one shows brilliance when they were unknown.
A very intelligent, funny film. It is not a slapstick comedy, so don't rent it if you are expecting "Tommy Boy" or "Happy Gilmore". If you like quirky comedies, comedies that make you think, in the vein of "Waiting for Guffman", "Drop Dead Gorgeous", "A Mighty Wind" or "Rushmore", then this is a perfect fit for you; buy it. If you want a 3 Stooges type comedy, you can look elsewhere; this one is more low key.

The 1988 follow-up to Paul Hogan's international hit "Crocodile" Dundee is less interesting and more formulaic than the first film, while a silly suspense element about a retaliatory drug kingpin has an air of contrivance. The story reverses the course of "Crocodile" Dundee, this time beginning in New York City and switching to the rugged bush country of Australia, where Dundee and his companion (Linda Kozlowski) run into trouble with the aforementioned villain. Hogan's natural charm keeps the movie afloat and easy to stick with, but the production lacks all the freshness and surprise of its predecessor. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars ~Mick Dundee is back & better than before~.......2007-08-08

I fell in love with the 1st Dundee movie & when the 2nd was released, "wondering how it could possibly be as good?". A FEW movie sequel's can ever measure up to the 1st ... BUT in "Crocodile Dundee 2" it is actually just as good & even BETTER than the first! It is more on the adventurous side whereas the 1st was more of a romantic comedy. I was thrilled that it was released on DVD & is one of my favorites to watch.

5 out of 5 stars The Croc is back! .......2007-07-16

Mic Dundee is back played by Paul Hogan but this time he is living with his wife Sue. Their world gets turned upside down again when her ex-husband is murdered by a drug lord. Sue (and then Mic) become new targets and Sue is captured and, of course, rescued my Mic but not without the help of an 80s street gang howling outside the drug lord's mansion! Mic and Sue return to Australia to out-trick and out-smart the bad guys while he picks them off one by one ("black magic" turns one into an iguna, a rhino runs off with another...). Until finally Wallie and Sue mess up Mic's plan in the end where he ends up being shot- but don't worry- a happy ending leaves us waiting for a Croc III...

5 out of 5 stars Paul Hogan, the one and only... Crocodile Dundee!.......2007-04-15

Crocodile Dundee II continues its recipe for making great movies! All the ingredients are there; adventure, action, romance, and great comedy.

Our modern day Tarzan is now a bit more mature and the story, while still very funny, carries a stronger message. Mick Dundee, played by Paul Hogan, is still in New York City with journalist Sue Charlton, who is played by Linda Kozlowski. Sue's ex-husband who is also a journalist, opens the movie covering a case in South America, where he gets involved on a story that exposes him to real danger. He is shooting the bad guys when he witnesses a murder.

Mr. Tanner sends the film to Sue but she is not home to get it, Mick Dundee does. The bad guys visit New York City to retrieve the package, taking Sue hostage. They soon realize she knows nothing about the situation, she did not get the phone message Mr. Tanner left for her, and she does not have the package.

Rico, the drug dealer played by Hechter Ubarry, is the type of villain that will do whatever it takes to achieve power and wealth, and knows the pictures would not only compromise his plans, but they would prove how corrupt his organization is.

Mick Dundee is able to save his lady from the kidnappers thanks to the help of a gang. Very funny moments are seen as he "bonds" with this group, which soon find themselves captivated by the Australian. As the film progresses, Mick realizes that he is out of his element and that if he is to have a chance at avoiding the danger represented by the drug-dealers, he must travel back to Australia, where "he can see them coming."

Back at home in Australia is where the real fun begins as we now see the bad guys in trouble. One by one, in some of the best moments of this film, we see them succumb to Mick Dundee. One of the best scenes has an aborigine poking at one of the captured villains and Sue asks what he just said to one of Mick's friends, only to hear that... "he is asking whether we can eat them." Of course, the villains faint at the realization that they are no longer in control.

A superb sequel to one of the best characters created... the one and only... Crocodile Dundee!

Olivier Martinez (Unfaithful, The Chambermaid) plays Angelo, an exceptionally gallant, Italian soldier-in-exile hiding out from his Austrian enemies in rural France, where a cholera epidemic is sweeping the countryside. Helped in a tough spot by a countess (Juliette Binoche), Angelo swears his unyielding protection to her as she searches for her missing husband. The nobler virtues hold sway as Martinez suppresses his own deepening love and desire for the lady, an admirable posture that has ironic consequences when the countess herself becomes deathly ill. Jean-Paul Rappeneau, maker of the ornamental but empty Cyrano de Bergerac, directs this adventure-romance to a nice pitch of vitality and high drama. The two leads establish a great chemistry (they became offscreen lovers and parents), like watching a pair of thoroughbreds running in the same race. --Tom Keogh

Universally praised by critics and moviegoers, THE HORSEMAN ON THE ROOF is another extraordinary film from the creators of the Academy Award(R)-winning CYRANO DE BERGERAC (Best Costume Design, 1990)!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excellent movie, highly recommended.......2007-08-06

Hauntingly beautiful, but very sad. If you're a Juliette Binoche fan, you'll really love it. Transaction very smooth, quick delivery.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful love-story in a time of an epidemic in the Provence! .......2007-05-16

This movie (directed by Rappeneau) is actually the adaptation of a novel by Jean Giono who alost always based the stories of his novels in the South of France, in the Provence. Olivier Martinez is Angelo, a young Italian Captain/horserider of the army (sorry don't know the grade in American English, he is a 'hussard'). He has to escape to France because he is chased by Austrian assassins and conspirators. Once there,in the South of France, he discovers that there is a serious epidemic of cholera. He has to deal with crazy local people but he also tries to help them. One day, he takes refuge in the house of Pauline De Theus (beautiful Juliette Binoche)...
This is the beginning of their story which is a very moving love story, even if their love must remain a platonic one. You can feel the power of their love in the looks between the actors, in their interactions and some of their arguments and there is one fine example of the power of Angelo's love for Pauline at the end of the movie; I will let you find out. Only the deepest love can do that.
I Love Olivier Martinez's part, Angelo is a wonderful character, you can't help being drawn to him, the actor brings the character to life to the perfection(I think it is one of his best parts). The actor is very charismatic! As for Juliette Binoche, she is glowing in the part of Pauline.
THe landscapes and the photography are fantastic and this movie also shows us how people react in a time of an epidemic, how fear can make them act wildly. Give yourself a treat. It's one of the best French period movie I've ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars The Horseman on the Roof.......2007-05-12

The scenery in this film is beautiful. Good story line.

1 out of 5 stars Martinez and Binoche never looked better fleeing War and the 1829 Asiatic Cholera Pandemic!.......2007-05-10

In 1829 the second pandemic of Asiatic Cholera began spreading through Europe. As our story opens in July 1833,not only is the epidemic spreading, but Austria has invaded Italy and Italian patriots have flown to France. This is the backdrop of the story of fleeing Italian Colonel Angelo (Olivier Martinez) and his chance meeting with the Marquess de Theus (Juliette Binoche). This meeting, though, does not occur until the second hour of this Jean-Paul Rappeneau directed period piece. We watch Angelo fight his way through cholera, hysterical townspeople,French police,Austrian soldiers and Italian stoolpidgeons, and each time he escapes miraculously unscathed looking better each time,no worse for the wear.By the time Angelo meets the Marquss, who is held up in her Aunt's manorhouse, the viewer has already been challenged to just keep up with Angelo, whom nothing sticks to him, havingmore narrow escapes than Indiana Jones in all three RAIDERS flicks.I have wanted to like this film over the years, but it is so mind-numbingly ridiculous that one has got to call a spade a spade and just say,"This film stinks like the plague!".

Apart from some of the finest cinematography that a film could offer, watching eye candy actors Binoche and Martinez in an extremely dull script that has possibly the most truncated ending ever remembered by this reviewer,is simply not enough to save this film from being consumed by the crows that peck at the dead bodies of cholera victims. In fact, the crows and the cat are far more interesting than Binoche and Martinez! How many times did Rappeneau direct Martinez to toss his brunette locks???

This film is truly one of the most inane pieces of dribble that I have ever seen. The continuity errors alone are staggering as Martinez and Binoche are continually made even more pretty despite all that they endure. In one seen early on,Martinez is kicked and beaten and bloodied by townspeople, only to be dragged away blood-free!The next scene he is totally cleaned up (though no one has helped him) with only a forehead scar that is gone within hours-no swelling or bruising. You can almost hear,"CUT!!...MAKE-UP!!" Naturally,Binoche gets cholera near the fim's conclusion, and Martinez strips her naked and rubs her down. She survives, though every man Martinez tries to save dies.He never has to strip the men further than the waist!!! Rappeneau seemed more intent on keeping his principle stars beautiful, sensual and pouty-lipped,then tell a story of any real substance.Only the most hopeless romantic would dare not see through this farce! Martinez and Binoche NEVER become their characters and the viewer is always aware that two gorgeous actors are attempting to play their roles.

The ending is unforgiveable and completely unsatisfying and unsubstantiated after 120 minutes of enduring Rappeneau's rant.Did the editor lose part of the film and Rappeneau just say LET'S GO WITH WHAT WE'VE GOT in French? MON DIEU!!!

CYRANO de BERGERAC was so good! What happened Jean-Paul?

4 out of 5 stars Great Romantic Adventure.......2007-02-15

I loved this film the first time I saw it over 10 years ago, which is why I purchased it on DVD. It's full of action, romance, and dignity. It's easy to see why it's been a popular story in France for many years. Terrific on-screen chemistry between lead actors Juliette Binoche and Olivier Martinez.

While caught up in the scandal resulting from the accident on the set of The Twilight Zone movie that killed actor Vic Morrow and two children, director John Landis (An American Werewolf in London) made this manic nighttime L.A. thriller with rising stars Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeiffer. Goldblum plays an office worker with a dead-end job, an unfaithful wife, and a bad, bad case of insomnia. Unable to sleep, his midnight wanderings take him to the L.A. airport, where beautiful jewel smuggler Pfeiffer literally lands on his car. Fleeing Iranian terrorists (one is played by Landis), the two hit the road, and their adventures lead them to murder, mayhem, one scary hit man (David Bowie in a lurid, terrific cameo), and, of course, romance. Perhaps because of--or in spite of--the turmoil going on in his life, Landis fashioned a film unlike any of his previous (or later) safe Hollywood products; this is inventive, darkly comic, sincerely romantic, and L.A.-style sultry all the way. Landis's greatest success is perhaps in the mood of the film: he manages to convey that weary, dreamlike insomnia feeling of adrenaline bordering on exhaustion. Goldblum is at his deadpan best and, despite a bad haircut and '80s wardrobe, Pfeiffer shows the spark and beauty that would later make her a star. In support of Landis during his time of trouble, numerous directors, including David Cronenberg, Paul Mazursky, Don Siegel, Jonathan Demme, Lawrence Kasdan, and Jim Henson, made cameo appearances. --Mark Englehart

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2007-07-24

What blew me away when I first saw this film was Jeff Goldblum's interpretation of an engineer. It was just so on. Matter of factly taking apart that his wife was cheating on him ... then running into this creature who in "real life" would never give him the time of day and calmly rolling through things already wildly out of control so they don't go any more crazy than they have to. David Bowie as the undercover rubbing shoulders with him in the middle of the night trying to figure out who the heck he's up against. It is a great joy to finally have this classic on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars "Into the Night".......2006-11-11

I owned this film on VHS for years, and when it mysteriously disappeared I ordered it on DVD. It's a sort of cult film with an amazing array of cameos and is one of my favorites. It's quite violent in spots, but I like the story, and Michelle Pfeiffer and Jeff Goldblum are excellent. I loved the ending, which I won't spoil for you. Simply put, if you like a good suspenseful yarn with a lot of action, you'll love it, too.

4 out of 5 stars Into the Night.......2006-07-26

This is one of Jeff Goldblum's first movies and raising star Michelle Pfeifer's best rolls. Jeff's roll is about a husband in a marriage on the rocks, and this drives him to being an insomniac as he discovers his wife is cheating on him, which almost costs him his aerospace engineering job. After passing one sleepless night, he decides he will find a place to park and get a few winks. He meanders around LA, winding up at LA International Airport blurry-eyed and almost falling asleep. He parks in a parking structure, sure he can now get a little sleep, when out of the elevator door walks Michelle Pfieffer and her Persian boyfriend. Suddenly a car pulls up and three men get out. They kill the boyfriend and are going to kidnap Michelle when she gets away from them and runs directly into Jeff's car, who is stunned, awakened by her screaming at him to get her out of here. The action is fast as the plot unfolds and the twists and turns never stop. Many co-stars make this an intriguing movie worthy of a place in your library. Directed by John Landis, this movie is R rated for good reason. If you ask me if I love this flick, or what, I'd would probably say "or what".

    2 out of 5 stars It's been forgotten for a reason........2005-09-10

This film is painfully outdated -- and it was never good to begin with. I suppose you would have to call this a "romantic thriller comedy." And it fails on every one of these fronts. The thriller portion is preposterous, nothing but a convoluted story from a 60s TV show. It's not particularly funny either -- oh, but it tries to be. The romance portion probably comes across the best, but this is only because of the excellent actors in the leads.

No, what "Into the Night" has going for it is a quirky, unique premise that it never delivers on. Landis seems more concerned with jamming the scenes with pointless cameos and in-jokes. This film, which could have been regarded as an underground classic, has none of the substance to garner such praise. And it does not receive it. "After Hours", which came out the same year, is vastly superior.

The best thing about "Into the night" is watching a young, gorgeous, pre-Catwoman Michelle Pfeiffer, some LA landmarks that have since been demolished (Ships diner) -- and the original one-sheet poster is very, very cool.

    5 out of 5 stars I loved this movie.......2005-03-19

Back when this movie came out on VHS I use to watch it over and over again. Both the stars are wonderful. It is about a guy who can not sleep and so he goes out and ends up finding himself in a little mini adventure with a very attractive women. She has a older boyfriend that was sick, there was a secret passage way, and a elvis impersonater in there somewhere. Then an appearance from Jake who use to sell exercise equipment on late night TV. Then there were some bad guys in there chasing them. It was a fun movie and I really enjoyed it. Both Michelle and Jeff went on to make other good movies after this one.

Three brothers (Nicolas Cage, Jon Lovitz, Dana Carvey) with a streak of lawbreaking in them head to a small town in Pennsylvania called Paradise, intending to rob a ripe bank there. But the people in the community turn out to be so nice that the thought of ripping them off proves difficult to imagine. The three leads each get to do their uniquely comic shticks, and that makes this film marginally watchable. But the pace is enervating and the story's main idea isn't all that well developed. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars A movie deserving of more attention .......2005-09-21

My wife and I enjoyed this movie to rate as one of our
favorites. When you think about this movie, remember
the funny lines and mannerisms from the characters that
didn't need sex or swearing to make this movie oveall
just enjoyable. This movie brought humor and a warm
side to the story. Dana Carvey, nailed this performance
as the total idiot brother, and to see Cages frustration
in dealing with his siblings. It's amazing how many people
never saw or heard of this movie. Definitely a movie that
deserves praise...I rated this movie a 5 for its creativity
without having to bring profanity, violence, or sex to the
    screen.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious and charming at the same time..........2005-02-14

This little known movie is one of my favorite movies of all time. It's great for the holidays but charming enough for anyone at anytime.
If you want to laugh out loud for two hours - watch this movie. It will instantly become a family favorite, especially at Christmas...

5 out of 5 stars CAGE IN A GILDED PARADISE.......2005-01-22

TRAPPED IN PARADISE is a surprisingly charming and fun to watch movie, that could be enjoyed at Christmas or any time of year. The movie has the feel of one of those forties or fifties charmers, where the bad guys aren't so bad and they become good guys once they realize what life is really all about.
While the leads (Nicolas Cage, Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz) are all very good, the movie's heart lies in the supporting performances: Florence Stanley as the boys' potty-mouthed mom; Donald Moffatt and Angela Paton as the Andersons, the bank president and his wife who unbeknownst to them are having the bank robbers for Christmas dinner; Madchen Amick (Twin Peaks) as the convict's sweet daughter; John Ashton as the redneck deputy; and Richard Jenkins as the putupon FBI agent. The scene where the bus depot clerk gives the duplicitous Cage enough money to get his ticket home is heart tugging, showing just how nice the people of Paradise really are.
Goofy and off the wall, TRAPPED IN PARADISE worms its way into your heart and is one of those critically panned movies that is much better than they thought! Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Not sure why this movie is so disliked.......2004-12-08

Way back in 1990 something when this movie came out, it was screened as a student feature at the college I was attending at the time prior to it's release in theathers. I went with a good friend of mine, and we seemed to be the only people in the theater laughing. After the movie hit theaters, all of the reviews were negative as if the movie featured a cast of unknowns instead of three very well established entertainers, two of whom are very gifted comedians. While all three actors have had better roles, they work well together with Cage being the straight man to Lovitz and Carvey's comedic banter. Yes, I realize that the premise of this movie is somewhat far fetched, but that's why it's a movie and not a news story. The movie has its fair share of laughs with a healthy dose of Christmas spirit. It gets watched every holiday season at my house, and I recommend it to anyone who is capable of watching a movie and being OK with the fact that it is a work of FICTION! Anyway, enjoy the movie, the calesthenics schtick by Lovitz during the bank robbery alone is worth the price of admission.

"This is going to be the last big score, I promise." Famous last words--uttered by crack thief Doc McCoy to his wife--that set forth a whirlpool of deception and violence in Roger Donaldson's 1994 remake of The Getaway. Bailed out of a Mexican jail by shady businessman Jack Benyon (James Woods) in order to hit an Arizona dog track for him, Doc (Alec Baldwin) and Carol (Kim Basinger) flee for south of the border when the robbery goes wrong, with the million-dollar loot in tow. Following close behind are Benyon's men and Doc's double-crossing partner Rudy (Michael Madsen).

The updated version shares not only the original film's plot, but also the added twist of having husband and wife Baldwin and Basinger step into the roles of the first real-life couple to make the film, Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw. This time, however, the woman's role has been given a tougher '90s edge, with Basinger pulling almost as many punches and firing as many shots as Baldwin, compared to McGraw, who followed McQueen around in wide-eyed, silent terror.

The Getaway maintains the same deliberate, neo-noir pace that made the first film taut, creating a claustrophobic atmosphere in the wide-open, desolate Southwestern landscapes. The scorching sun and heat only add to the strain, making it virtually impossible for anyone to find a dark corner or alleyway to hide in. The car chases and shoot-out finale are charged, though a secondary plot line, between Rudy and the woman he kidnaps and seduces (Jennifer Tilly), comes across as unnecessarily and incongruously brutal. --Natasha Senjanovic

4 out of 5 stars "You Should Have Married a Dentist.".......2007-08-10

Early in this 1994 remake of the 1972 movie "The Getaway" Alec Baldwin (Doc McCoy) tells Kim Bassinger (Carol McCoy) that is she isn't happy with being the wife of a robber that she should have married a dentist. But she didn't and she adapts quite nicely to being a gun moll. She is as good a shot as her husband.

Of course this remake based on Jim Thompson's novel invites comparison with the 1972 Steve McQueen version. Alec Baldwin is certainly no Steve McQueen so he is just a different Doc but in all most every way as effective as McQueen in the original. He is much more emotional with an anger burning just under the surface that erupts often, unlike the taciturn McQueen. Bassinger is even better as his wife Carol and is a much more talented, expansive actress than MacGraw. No cringing vine is she as she gives as good as she gets. James Woods plays the Jack Benyon role here and Philip Seymour Hoffman, before the world knew who he was, is one of the henchmen who works with McCoy on the robbery. In this instance the robbers hit a safe at a dog racetrack rather than a bank. But except for that change and a few minor others, this version sticks closely to the original. One obvious reason is that Walter Hill wrote the screenplay for both movies.

Married in real life, Bassinger and Baldwin burn up the screen in their bedroom scenes. And for those keeping score, there is a lot of Ms. Bassinger to see. My problem with the movie is that I saw it on the heels of watching the McQueen version so there was little if any suspense for me. This of course is no fault of anyone connected with the Bassinger-Baldwin film.

    4 out of 5 stars A VERY Good movie!.......2007-05-08

I have never seen the original, but from what I have read it does not compare to this one. Kim and Jennifer are HOT!!! in this movie...especially Kim. This is when Kim was very good looking and the scene of her with her clothes off was worth the price of the DVD. I own this movie and must have watched it about 5 times or more and I never get tired of it. I gave it 4 stars cause I think they should have shown more shots of Jennifer naked. In my opinion this is the one that should be on HD...not the original one.

    4 out of 5 stars The Getaway - A great action flick!.......2007-05-03

While "The Getaway" has been widely perceived as a flop of a remake, I've always considered this movie to be one of the better and more intriguing actions flicks of the 90's. The action in this movie is pretty much non stop and only slows down for some intriguing, if not gratuitous, love scenes between the film's two main stars, Alec Baldwin and the ever beautiful Kim Basinger. The film is further enhanced with well played out performances by Michael Madsen, Jennifer Tilly, James Woods and several other bit players.

Although this film was a remake and "generally" followed along the same lines as the original movie, one can definitely say that director Roger Donaldson made this movie his own. Given other film credits such as "No Way Out" and "The Bounty," I'd definitely put this film amongst his best list. The score for the film plays into the film rather seamlessly.

    The Premise:

Master criminal Doc McCoy (Alec Baldwin) and his wife, Carol (Kim Basinger) find themselves in the position of having to do "one" last job after Carol negotiates Doc's way out of a Mexican prison. What follows is no less than an exceptional action flick with all the usual tricks; gun battles, betrayal, car chases and a memorable performance by Jennifer Tilly playing a sexy twit.

    Overall, this film delivers both drama and action quite well and it effortlessly pushes from scene to scene leading up to an excellent finale. I would highly recommend this film to any and all. {ssintrepid}

3 out of 5 stars Getaway 1972 vs. Getaway 1994!!.......2007-04-16

Both Getaway movies have the same screenplay writen by Walter Hill, both have the slow-mo action and basically they are the same, BUT here are the differences:

    Getaway 1972:

    * Steve McQueen is WAY COOLER than Alec Bladwin.
    * Rudy and his girl are more evil here.
    * The car chase scene is at midnight.
    * There is no STUPID dog race scene, only a bank robbery scene.
    * The characters here are more quiet.
    * The first getaway scene is COOLER and EXPLOSIVE!
    * The train scene here is a CLASSIC.
    * The slap scene is more intense here.
    * The jail scenes here are longer.

    Getaway 1994:
    * There are more emotional scenes in this one.
    * Kim Basinger's character is tougher and hotter!
    * There are MORE celebrities here than in the original.
    * The car chase scene was longer.
    * There are sex scenes in this one.
    * There is more blood and foul language here than in the original.
    * They added one made-up action scene in the begining.
    * There is a one to one fight between Rudy and Doc.

In my opinion the Getaway 1972 is better because SteveMcQueen is SOO COOL! you can watch the 1994 remake if you want to but that one is more like a normal action movie than a CLASSIC action movie.

    Adios.

I thought the movie was as good as Steve McQueen's movie, which was also
    excellent.

3 out of 5 stars Double Trouble has NO DOUBLES!.......2007-08-25

This is not so much a review, just a correction of a howling factual blunder in another review that I read here a little while back (and which I seem unable to locate now, so it may possibly have been deleted, but just in case...): it stated that "Double Trouble" is the only other movie apart from "Kissin' Cousins" in which Elvis comes face to face with himself - well, he doesn't! (As anyone who has actually watched the film would know... why ever would somebody post a review of a movie that they haven't even seen???)

The 'double' of the title is a dual reference to espionage (as in 'double agent') and the fact that the King - as is his wont (or perhaps being even a little parsimonious by his normal standards!) - is involved throughout the story with two girls and thus, quite literally, has 'double trouble'.

There - just wanted the clear that up!

(By the way, the movie's not that bad. Even the much derided 'Old Macdonald' scene has the kind of charm that only Elvis could possibly confer on such inherent rubbish. Personally, as Elvis movies go, I'd give it 8 out of 10 for watchability!)

After a foolproof scam turns sour, Jimmy the Saint (a soulful but miscast Andy Garcia, who mainly acts with his hair) and his hard-bitten crew must put their various sordid affairs in order before facing their final bloody curtain call. It's not nearly as clever as it thinks it is, but this terminally wise-ass (and extremely violent) caper flick is still one of the better post-Tarantino crime opuses, with some sharp dialogue, a scenery-chewing Christopher Walken (as a paraplegic archcriminal), and unhinged performances by Treat Williams and the obsequious Steve Buscemi that must be seen to be (dis)believed. Neophyte scripter Scott Rosenberg would later pen hipper-than-thou scripts for Beautiful Girls, Con Air, and Armageddon, while director Gary Fleder moved on to the somewhat more reputable Kiss the Girls. The tongue-twisting title is from a Warren Zevon song. --Andrew Wright

5 out of 5 stars Don't ask for the "buckwheat" pancakes..........2007-06-16

See the movie, and you'll understand the reference. An often overlooked movie that has a lot of special acting roles. A MUST see for any one who likes crime/gang/ action/drama/love movies. Wonderful work by A Garcia, and Chris Walken is memorably evil as the "Man with the Plan". All around great flick - you'll be quoting lines from this one for a while, and Gabrielle Anwar - wow! "Boat Drinks" for all!

4 out of 5 stars Love it, Love it, Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-08

Bought this movie after renting it. Can't say enough good things about it. My favorite actor (Andy Garcia) is in it. Highly recommend this movie to all the true Andy Garcia fans out there! Interesting language and twists during the entire movie. I watch it over and over again. Never get tired of it. Once you've seen it, you'll want to own it.

5 out of 5 stars Below the Radar.......2007-03-08

Many people have never seen or heard of this movie, but it's great with a killer cast.

    4 out of 5 stars Give it a name...why doncha?.......2006-10-02

In spite of some flashy, occasionally overused language (e.g., "give it a name" meaning tell it like it is), this is a better than average crime film that manages to simultaneously make some fun of crime films. For example, the "mob boss" is called, I kid you not, The Man with the Plan. One character's monicker is, another real thing not made up (i.e., I myself am not making this up), Critical Bill. And like that.

So what we got here is a somewhat formulaic plot. OK, more than somewhat. The crime, the, you know, doesn't go as planned kinda thing, the repercussions, etc. But you also have something very unexpected and that is a romance that's not stupid or schlocky, but that actually makes you feel something. The main character, played by Andy Garcia--Jimmy the Saint--falls hard for the lead female (Gabrielle Anwar, she of "Scent of a Woman" fame) and the ensuing romance is truly heartfelt. Hmmmm.. a different spin on a crime film. Yes it is.

Even though the characters are kinda stock ones, it's still fun to watch them go through their paces 'cause they're good at it--Christopher Lloyd, Treat Williams (anybody ever figure out how he got that first name?), Christopher Walken, Jack Warden, William Forsythe, and to top it off, the great Steve Buscemi as contract killer (get this) "Mr. Shush". (Now that's what I call giving it a name).

So the quirkiness, the pure romance, and the acting chops all save this from being another completely humdrum entry in the post-Tarantino crime film glut. Much better than you might think...

    1 out of 5 stars I'm Godzilla and you're Tokyo.......2006-05-02

That is the only good line in this entire movie, in part because it describes the relationship between the movie and you, the gentle viewer. You would think this film might be good, just due to the eclectic list of actors (Jack Warden! Christopher Walken! Treat Williams! That guy from "Hudsucker Proxy"!). But you would be so, so wrong.

"Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead" badly wants to be "Reservoir Dogs" or "Pulp Fiction." Indeed, you can compare this movie to "Reservoir Dogs" on a macro level, like the screenwriter obviously did. Getting some criminals together at some dive restaurant and assembling a gang for a job? Check. Job goes wrong in the middle of the movie? Check. Crazy guy on the crew? Check. The team has to deal with the consequences of their failure? Check. Hey, all that the writer forgot to check off on his list was interesting dialogue, plot, and some sense of style. The screenplay lies there like some dude that got whacked, and completely wastes the talent of the cast. The dialogue and pacing are atrocious, but who needs pacing when you never get anywhere plotwise?

For a movie that references the city of Denver in the title, this movie has less of a sense of place than a TV sitcom. You never get the feeling you're in Denver, or anywhere in particular for that matter. Even the expensive yet pointless crane shot in the very first scene (a warning sign from frame 1 of this garbage) doesn't provide any kind of "Denverness" to this movie.

This is by far the worst of the Tarantino clones of the 90s. Truly awful in every way, it is a film to be avoided at all costs. If you're in the video store on Friday night and this is all that's left, it's a sign that you should turn off the TV that night and go to the pub instead.
