With movies like Chocolat, it's always best to relax your intellectual faculties and absorb the abundant sensual pleasures, be it the heart-stopping smile of chocolatier Juliette Binoche as she greets a new customer, an intoxicating cup of spiced hot cocoa, or the soothing guitar of an Irish gypsy played by Johnny Depp. Adapted by Robert Nelson Jacobs from Joanne Harris's popular novel and lovingly directed by Lasse Hallström, the film covers familiar territory and deals in broad metaphors that even a child could comprehend, so it's no surprise that some critics panned it with killjoy fervor. Their objections miss the point. Familiarity can be comforting and so can easy metaphors when placed in a fable that's as warmly inviting as this one.

Driven by fate, Vianne (Binoche) drifts into a tranquil French village with her daughter Anouk (Victoire Thivisol, from Ponette) in the winter of 1959. Her newly opened chocolatier is a source of attraction and fear, since Vianne's ability to revive the villagers' passions threatens to disrupt their repressive traditions. The pious mayor (Alfred Molina) sees Vianne as the enemy, and his war against her peaks with the arrival of "river rats" led by Roux (Depp), whose attraction to Vianne is immediate and reciprocal. Splendid subplots involve a battered wife (Lena Olin), a village elder (Judi Dench), and her estranged daughter (Carrie-Anne Moss), and while the film's broader strokes may be regrettable (if not for Molina's rich performance, the mayor would be a caricature), its subtleties are often sublime. Chocolat reminds you of life's simple pleasures and invites you to enjoy them. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Nominated for 5 Academy Awards(R) including Best Picture, Best Actress (Juliette Binoche -- THE ENGLISH PATIENT), and Best Supporting Actress (Judi Dench -- SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE), CHOCOLAT is the beautiful and captivating comedy from the acclaimed director of THE CIDER HOUSE RULES! Nobody could have imagined the impact that the striking Vianne (Binoche) would make when she arrived in a tranquil, old-fashioned French town. In her very unusual chocolate shop, Vianne begins to create mouth-watering confections that almost magically inspire the straitlaced villagers to abandon themselves to temptation and happiness! But it is not until another stranger, the handsome Roux (Johnny Depp -- SLEEPY HOLLOW), arrives in town that Vianne is finally able to recognize her own desires!

4 out of 5 stars SWEETLY ROMANTIC ADULT FAIRY TALE.......2007-09-04

Juliette Binoche (The English Patient) glows as Vianne Rocher, a free-spirited young woman that the wind blows into a small, morally obsessed and oppressed French town one day. Using an ancient Mayan recipe discovered by her father, she and her daughter have come there to open a chocolaterie. Her confections are out of this world, and she uses them to try to help mend the various broken people and relationships in the town. But the mayor (Alfred Molina - Spiderman 2), whose family has dominated the town for centuries and who fears she will lead the townspeople away from their traditional faith and mores, declares war on Mademoiselle Rocher and tries to turn the townspeople against her.

One by one she gains allies, first in the form of her landlady, Armande Voizin (Judi Dench - Shakespeare In Love, Pride And Prejudice) and her grandson Luc Clairmont (Aurelien Parent Koenig - debut), which infuriates Luc's mother, Caroline (Carrie-Anne Moss - The Matrix), who has forbidden him from seeing his grandmother. Then she gains a battered woman (Josephine Muscat - The Ninth Gate), whose husband (Peter Stormare - Fargo) the mayor tries to reform in order to prove that his way of changing people is better. It doesn't work. Johnny Depp doesn't appear until the second act to reinforce Vianne in her cause and to offer romantic interest. He and his river gypsy friends are also considered undesirables by the town.

What's interesting about this film is that the Christian townspeople are being held hostage by the self-righteous, morally oppressive mayor, and consequently Vianne acts more like a Christian than any of they, even though she is not a believer. She takes a genuine interest in people and tries to help them with her friendship and chocolates. The mood of the film is magical, though magic has nothing to do with it - it's really about love. The question is, will love win out before Vianne gives up and decides her cause is hopeless?

This film is rated PG-13, which is a shame because, if several scenes that are not critical to the story had been toned down or left out, it would have made a wonderful family film. It has a story-book setting and feel that would appeal to any age. Unfortunately, several scenes push it into the category of adult romance. Nevertheless, it is a wonderful story about love in the face of prejudice that all of us need to hear, as well as enough chocolate shown onscreen to satisfy any chocolate lover's craving.

Johnny Depp, need I say more? Okay for those of you who arn't a fan of his, there is more, more indeed.

This movie is a recipe with all the right amounts. Suspense, romance, humor, depth, characters with layers.

This movie isn't simply about one of the most loved desserts of all time but what it represents. This movie is about prejudice, desire, temptation, religion, secrets, determination, and what happens when you are under the microscope.

Things are not what they always appear, are they? Well you'll have to watch to find out.

I found this movie very sensual. Johnny Depp I could devour him, he's so delicious and the chemistry with Juliet Binoche is on key. All of the elements add up to a treat sure to please, again and again.

a side note... I found the music enjoyable

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie!.......2007-08-07

As a non "chick", 60 something year old geezer, I enjoyed this movie a lot. It's overrriding message seemed to be a plea for tolerance toward strangers as shown in the film using a close knit, clannish little town whose social and moral values are set and controlled by an religiously devout hereditary mayor. The movie gracefully depicts how easily the most ardent followers of a savior god who preached love & tolerance toward all can turn to outsiders with hate and intolerance using the same teachings. A situation that's all too familiar through history and especially valid today.

The movie was never boring, well acted, with a sweetness tempered by a dark undercurrent. My only quibble with the entire film was Johnny Depp's performance which seemed out of place, as though he were making another "Pirates" movie as Jack Sparrow. Really though, it's a minor issue with me since his role was very limitted; almost an aside to the actual story.

The movie held my attention throughout. I never felt the urge to check my watch or get up for a snack.

5 out of 5 stars Yummy! Can't get enough of Johnny..........2007-08-04

He's just too delicious. There is so much to love about this movie. True entertainment and it leaves you feeling good. Now I'm craving chocolate and more Johnny Depp movies!

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Entertaining!.......2007-07-25

This movie is very fun to watch. Probably more of a chick-flick, or maybe a date movie (if you have a tolerant guy), but very well acted, and the story is a lot of fun.

I ordered a total of three dvds within this series (The Temptations, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, and Marvin Gaye). All three are a must have. My family and friends have thoroughly enjoyed watching each series. Each dvd offers rare vintage footage and "full performances" which take you back to this era. I plan to order more for Christmas presents. They are absolutely a must have!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Temptations.......2007-08-27

This DVD of The Temptations is really great. I grew up listening to them starting back in the 60's. I am able to appreciate them more now, because I can settle down, and listen to the beautiful harmony, understand the history of the music, and the writers. David's voice is just captivating, it just draws you into his soul. I wish I could have slowed down, and appreciated it more back then. My daughter and grandchildren love this video. Anyone that has more DVD's by the original Temptations please, please put it out for other people to hear and appreciate good, good music. I would love to be able to purchase more orginal Temptations on DVD. Someone should compile all of the performances of the Temptations, from all the shows they were on back in those days on a DVD and put it on sale. We have a yearning for this music. I will buy several copies, along with thousands of other lovers of The original Temptations; (David, Paul, Eddie, Melvin and Otis. Pearl I.

This is a great DVD for all Temptations fans. It starts with the original Temptations, including David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams, and it progresses through all of the members of the Temptations with Otis Williams providing the history of each song. It's a wonderful DVD. I have bought 4 copies as gifts.

5 out of 5 stars I Fell In Love All Over Again.......2007-07-17

I grew up in the sixties when the Tempts were at the top of their game. They had such an impact on my life and seeing this dvd was like having them back again. With their rich, gospel-tinged harmonies, precision choreopgraphy and impeccable style of dress, the Tempts were the ones that women wanted to be with and men wanted to be. They were the epitome of cool. There was Melvin's booming bass, Eddie's soaring tenor and boyish good looks, Paul's wonderful dance moves, David, with his super cool bad boy persona, and Otis, the glue that held it all together. No group before or since has captured the magic of this five. Dennis Edwards had some very big shoes to fill when he took over for David Ruffin. He was good, but it was never the same after David left. I enjoyed watching the way the group evolved from "The Way You Do the Things You Do" to "I Wish It Would Rain". On "The Way You Do the Things You Do" they are so full of manic energy and appeared to be so happy to finally have a hit on the charts. It's fun watching them enjoy themselves so. David is fun to watch with his pompadour and sunglasses. Toward the end of the song he starts to mug it up and Paul pulls him back from the mike. It's very funny. On "I Wish It Would Rain" they are at their peak. The lead and the background vocals and the dance steps still blow me away after all these years. These guys invented "smooth". The dvd also features a rare lead performance by Paul singing "Don't Look Back". Equally enjoyable is the interview with Otis. I enjoyed the anecdotes, especially the one about the making of "Ain't Too Proud To Beg". The dvd ends with an a capella version of "You're My Everything" and some beautiful still photos over the closing credits. I highly recommend this dvd. If you are a child of the sixties like myself you'll love being transported back in time. If you are child of the eighties and have only seen the movie, this is your chance to see the real thing and see what made this group so great.

Conceived as a television miniseries, this portrait of the epochal Motown vocal group scores as one of the most detailed re-creations of the '60s pop milieu ever filmed. Told largely through the eyes of founding member Otis Williams (Charles Malik Whitfield), The Temptations portrays its protagonists as soul Everymen whose early triumphs closely followed, and helped expand, Motown Records' emergence as "the Sound of Young America," providing an inspirational fable for black Americans.

Inevitably, of course, the story is also a cautionary tale about the price of success for both the Temps and their mentor, Motown founder Berry Gordy (Obba Babatunde). With hit records and tours, Williams and his partners grapple with drugs, alcohol, depression, jealousy, and delusions of grandeur. In particular, the galvanic lead singer David Ruffin (Leon) serves as both a focal strength and potential destroyer for the group, as his ego combines with a mounting cocaine habit to create a monster. At the same time, Gordy's eventual decision to leave his and the label's home, Detroit, for Los Angeles marks a loss of innocence for the group and their label-mates. The film provides ample insider detail about how the former Ford assembly-line worker created and controlled his unique hit factory.

Based on the biography coauthored by Williams and former manager Shelly Berger, the project gets a vital boost from behind the camera, thanks to executive producer Suzanne DePasse, herself a former Motown exec, and director Allan Arkush (Rock 'n' Roll High School). That lineage probably pulls some punches in terms of individual characters and Gordy's machinations, but it also affords The Temptations its convincing detail, as does the generous running time--a mixed blessing, due to the original two-part broadcast, which might have benefited from tightening for this video version. Giving the show its greatest kick are the group's original hits, performed and choreographed convincingly in lip-synched sequences. --Sam Sutherland

I sure wish there was a widescreen version of this great movie availible, it deserves having the "big screen" look. I know it was a TV movie, but I still think it would make a wonderful widescreen movie.

The movie itself is very well done, with a great script, great acting and direction, and fantastic production values throughout. All of these things make it easy to let yourself drift back to the 1960's and the music of Motown at it's very best. Thanks HBO, and thank you Temptations, for giving us such wonderful entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars There is only one Temptations movie I love more than this one..........2007-06-13

I saw this movie when it first aired on network television. Most of the commercials were selling the movie in VHS or DVD format and I've always regretted not buying it then. I knew the price the would go down later, but never imagined the movie would be shortened in its re-release.

In this DVD version, which I own nevertheless, some of my favorite scenes were taken out: Eddie Kendricks performing during his solo career; Eddie and David performing "You're My Everything" -- my all-time favorite Temptations song!; and the New Year's Day scene was shortened. This scene provided the most insight into David Ruffin's character. He talked about being abused as a child.

It is still a wonderful movie, no doubt. It is just to my misfortune that I am unable to watch it without a little disappointment. I enjoyed every second of the original version so much.

Description

Join the Joie de Vivre club with the maddeningly charming Lola, as she plots to loosen up her fiancé in this exuberant comedy. Everyone is wild about Lola - even, some suspect, her own stepfather…

Originally titled "Monella (Rascal)", "Frivolous Lola" has generally been available in censored versions. Here, for the first time outside of Italy, and with Subtitles, is the uncut masterwork of erotica at its most humorous. Long renowned for his work in documentaries and the avant-garde, director Tinto Brass is now famous as the world's premier erotic filmmaker, turning out movies that have bridged the gender gap, earning at least as many ardent female admirers as male fans. "Frivolous Lola" is perhaps his most likeable film yet.

5 out of 5 stars great entertainment.......2007-07-11

i was going to say great adult entertainment but thought that adult would give too much the 'adult' inference. this is a fun, ribald, humourous, risque and adult flick. not porno, just adult in its moods, humor and visuals. a type of flick not made anymore, just adult fun.

Great, loved, and fun too. This film nice to watch when there's nothing you got in your DVD Adult collection.I'm a big fan of Tinto Brass it's to bad some of Hollywood movie machine studio don't pruduce the guy film, but thank god they don't his film are really racey.I'm being kind by saying that.I lot of other filmmakers try to follow this guyd film and some filmmaker sucseed and some failed badly.
Cheeky is a good film for adult lots of nudity and sex.
For thoughs who like soft core film this is it
I say buy it.

1 out of 5 stars You Rascal You.......2007-02-15

This is a waste of film. Tinto Brass probably wanted to make a tease-flick, but this is just a shame. The young lady who can't keep her skirt down flaunts her desire for sex before marriage in such a way as to embarass the viewer - especially shameful is the bar scene where she keeps displaying her crotch to a table of soldiers in order to get her boyfriend jealous. Too bad this went too far. The Italian title, "Rascal," is a better fit for this one.

5 out of 5 stars Whatever Lola Wants.......2007-01-13

It seems to be a leading lady in a Tinto Brass film you must:

* Be young and attractive
* Have an exceptional sensuous body
* Not be shy about nudity
* Exude a cheerful, lighthearted persona
* Act loveably naughty.

That has been the case in the previous Brass films I have watched and reviewed and Frivolous Lola is no exception. Rumor has it that the inscrutable producer of erotica met the vivacious young actress, Anna Ammirati while examining her body. The body of her car that is, after being involved in a traffic accident with her. It doesn't matter whose fault it was, the outcome was inevitable - Anna gallivanting around with little or no clothing in his next movie. Anna is reputed to have entreated the enigmatic director to feature her in his next movie and a enchanting match was born.

The Plot

Lola is a carefree lass in an unnamed village in Italy of some notoriety and gossip. Her mother who grew up there, left years before but returned with a handsome paramour, Andr'e and a vibrant sexually precocious teen daughter, Lola.

Lola is a virgin a condition she dislikes. She is engaged to the son of the village baker, Masetto, whom she wants to deflower her. Masetto would like to wait for their wedding night and this frustrates Lola.
A sub plot of the movie is Lola's relationship with her alleged father, Andr'e. They both find each other and find each other attractive.

The Story

The story revolves around Lola's efforts to get Masetto to make love with her and thus take her virginity. She tries various tricks, including making him jealous by coming on with other men. There was even a scene in a tavern where she is jitterbugging with three soldiers, sans her panties, with flashes of her genital folds and pubis.

Lola's alleged father Andr'e fascinates her. He is somewhat of a leach with prurient instincts and she is drawn to and fanaticizes about him. She makes a couple unsuccessful attempts to seduce him.

In the end Lola does trick Masetto into deflowering her - her term and at their wedding the next day a scene takes place between Lola and Andr'e where you are left wondering, no believing that they also have sex.

In hindsight it may be a take on that old song of the fifties, "Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets."

Conclusion

Lola is indeed frivolous and afew other adjectives ranging from adorable to bratty. Her self-centered thoughtless behavior is nothing short of tawdry. If there are women that behave so flippant, I wouldn't want to be engaged to them. Yet, as a viewer there is something winsome about her frolicsome, lighthearted, even compelling behavior.

As with other Brass movies I have viewed a typical theme permeates Frivolous Lola. Nothing is shameful to her. She with the overactive libido was born to enjoy life and she resents anyone that wants to rein her in, while her man is supposed to go along with her indiscretions

Frivolous Lola is an exercise in exhibitionism. The movie seems to be a memorial to Lola's or is it Anna Amirati's shapely figure with voyeuristic peeks at her genitalia. The story seems incidental, it is merely a vehicle to attain the desired effect.

I do not mean to sound like this is bad. Contrary, it is good. I found the movie to be funny entertaining and stimulating - one of his best and one of the better erotica movies available.

The lovely Anna Amirati was uniformly naughty and loveable. Her body was adorable and her acting endearing. Supporting actors, Packtrick Mower and Mario Parodi did well too.

The film was shot in what appeared to be the Italian countryside. The sets and costumes were colorful and the cinematography was first rate. Rating 4.6 stars

1 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2006-11-10

Soft core porn masquerading as art, I didn't even make it through the first half hour of this film. Lola's cute, but it's still not worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars Men who cry in the dark.......2007-09-13

I saw the play first and then I bought the DVD, I have watched this play over a dozen times. I am glad that I have added this to my collection and you will be too!

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2007-09-13

I liked this but I did not like the abrupt ending. If you like happy endings don't watch this. It is a stage play and the singing did go on a bit but all in all it wasn't a bad production. If you can get over the ending it is worth watching it again.

2 out of 5 stars not impressed.......2007-08-16

i'm not a fan of the "chitlin circuit" plays, it was an unintentional purchase and i was affirmed in my dislike. however, if you are not as picky, you may find it entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Great Play.......2007-07-10

Men Cry in The Dark was a GREAT stage play. I personally can relate to the plot line, being a writer myself. The actors were well chosen, The play itself was funny witty and very believable. I read some of the other reviews, and some people said it sucked, well to those reviewers. PLEASE DON'T WRITE ANYMORE REVIEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Wouldn't recommend this to anyone.......2007-07-07

I purchased this DVD because I heard from a friend that it was good. I liked the play the Maintenance Man, so I assumed this would be just as good...I was totally wrong. This was the longest and most boring play I have ever seen. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone---save your money.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing but a tease.......2007-09-03

This movie is pretty funny. It has tons of humorous moments, most of them involving some mention or visual with sex. This could've been a better movie had it let the viewer actually see some sex, but alas, its only a tease.
Other than that, i can't find anything wrong about this movie. The sound and dubbing is great, better than most. The animation is uber pretty. Finally, its just fun to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Better than I expected.......2007-05-14

I took a chance on Mouse and was surprised to find that both the story and the fan-service were much better than I had ever dared to hope for.

3 very bouncy girls jumping around in skimpy little outfits will keep you drooling from the begining to the end. And if that's not enough for you, the story of Mouse is very enjoyable. Mouse is entirely episodic, with each episode having it's own begining and end. But the stories are so well written that each episode stands very well on it's own.

You can watch Mouse one episode at a time and fully enjoy it, but it's such a good show that you will want to watch them all. Definately buy volumes 1 and 2 together, you will not regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Fan service, action and stealing!.......2006-06-04

Mouse is a internationally infamous thief who can steal anything. During the day he is a harmless art teacher but at night he rogue who will steal anything from gems to buildings. And he has the help of three lovely ladies, millions of dollars, super advanced equipment and, in some cases, the armed forces of other nations. The reason he has so much support is that he is the member of the 20th generation of the family who has been given the name, a title as it were, of Mouse. He and his forefathers have had over four hundred years to develop their skills and build up an empire which is designed to do nothing but support the Mouse.
With lots of fan service and mature themes I think giving it a suggested rating of 16 and up is a little low. The episodes are short, as there is six in only 90 minutes, but the action is fast, the ladies are cute in their maid outfits (or kitten outfits or work outfits or birthday outfits) and there is tons of humor. A must for anybody who just wants a cool anime. I might have to find out if there is a manga.

3 out of 5 stars The plot line is good..........2006-03-07

The plot line is good but if your looking for more than just jiggly girly parts then this is not the movie for you.

Sorata Muon is Mouse, the famous cat balugar that started in Fedual Japan. Sorata is the most recent Mouse and has done his job quite wonderfully, with the help of his three sexy assisants thar serve him in any way they can. There's plently of skin in this series, but isn't a hentai by any means.

Amazon.com essential video

It isn't difficult to imagine why this 1988 retelling of the Crucifixion story was picketed vociferously upon release--this Jesus bears little resemblance to the classical Christ, who was not, upon careful review of the Gospels, ever reported to have had sex with Barbara Hershey. Heavily informed by Gnostic reinterpretations of the Passion, The Last Temptation of Christ (based rather strictly on Nikos Kazantzakis's novel of the same name) is surely worth seeing for the controversy and blasphemous content alone, but it's difficult to find in skittish chain video stores. But the "last temptation" of the title is nothing overtly naughty--rather, it's the seduction of the commonplace; the desire to forgo following a "calling" in exchange for domestic security. Willem Dafoe interprets Jesus as spacy, indecisive, and none too charismatic (though maybe that's just Dafoe himself), but his Sermon on the Mount is radiant with visionary fire; a bit less successful is method actor Harvey Keitel, who gives the internally conflicted Judas a noticeable Brooklyn accent, and doesn't bring much imagination to a role that demands a revisionist's approach. Despite director Martin Scorsese's penchant for stupid camera tricks, much of the desert footage is simply breathtaking, even on small screen. Ultimately, Last Temptation is not much more historically illuminating than Monty Python's Life of Brian, but hey, if it's authenticity you're after, try Gibbon's. --Miles Bethany

1 out of 5 stars A Jesus No One Would Follow.......2007-09-03

It should come as no suprise that the man who has made so many films that glamourize gangsters would make a movie about a weak, unattractive, devious Jesus....
The Son of God making crosses for the Romans to crucify his fellow Jews?
GIVE ME A BREAK...and who is the great spiritual influence in the life of Jesus...The greatest villian in the Bible...Judas...
Jesus had to be a strong man..he was a carpenter..he was so strong that after being beaten up he could carry his cross up a hill...Probably could have played linebacker for Lombardi's Packers...He was not the wimp, Defoe portrays him to be..
Jesus has a great sense of humor..Children gathered around him..Children avoid people who don't laugh...While we may laugh AT Defoe, we would never laugh WITH him...
Jesus had to be a great public speaker...not a mumbling fugitive from Actor's studio....
A great movie to show your atheist friends...they will love it!
To see a Bibical Jesus..Get the Gospel According To John ....

3 out of 5 stars Good grief!.......2007-09-03

The idea of the film I have to say is a remarkable one. An examination of Christ as a man, a human being who struggles to come to terms with being granted prophethood. A man who while rejecting this and all that comes with it is compelled to act in acordance with a mission he has been sent with.

Interesting idea and one that would be well worth watching problem is 1. The choice of actors for the film 2. The roles they are given.

With such a film you need a cast who are strong enough to carry it out in its correct historical context this film sadly does not have it. What coems off is not a historical reading of the life of Jesus examining an otherwise overlooked aspect of his life but rather "Jesus goes gangster"

Take the scene where Jesus visits Mary Magdalane in a brothel. After Jesus sits for a while amongst her clients (most of whom seem to be black (as well as the local slaves) more of Scorsese's odd obsession with black people but thats another issue) after they all depart they debate on how he has his calling to dewll in the desert, Mary feels abandoned and they argue. The argument (both language and context) whould be more suited to a 40s Al Capone flick or better still the episode of the Simpsons where he thinks back to his days raising the kids in "Little Italy" The body language, the terminolgy used everything was just so out of place.

Take the scene where Jesus speaks with one of his deciples, the deciple says to him "I will follow you but if you stray this far from the path..... (As he holds his hand up in trademark Gangstar fashon)I'll kill you" Or the scene where he first speaks to the people after saving Mary "He told me stand up and here I am" With arogant head back, eyes half closed, arms streached out looked more like 'King of New York' than 'Jesus the Messiah'

The deciples come together more like 'wise guys' joining a 'crew' than followers of a prophet. There is even a bit of slow motion Resevior Dogs style strut to the camera with music played over!

Why on earth has Scorsese done this? Did he think it would bring Jesus closer to the moder audience? Did he think the protests would be too buisy....well protesting to even bother watching the film and examining weather it was actually a good film or not to criticise its quality rather than its context? Who knows.

The idea behind the film though is exellent. Its almost ironic that someone who is religious would probably get a lot of benefit from the film. The meditation and temptation of Jesus both from within and beyond him. This part of the film is remarkable I only wish the so called 'critics' could have watched this part as it realy shows what sepparated the prophets from the normal man, the need of God and religion and the simplicity of faith.

For the idea of the film I would give it 5 stars if only Scorsese had not destroyed it with this monster of a film!

5 out of 5 stars Wouldn't It Be Nice If People Would Actually See The Movies They Hate?.......2007-08-27

The Last Temptation of Christ has been one of my favorite films ever since I first watched it on VHS years ago. When I saw it, I had no idea it was the controversial, much-hated work that it apparently is, primarily to those who regard Jesus as too sacred a personage to place within a work of fiction that (they've heard) conflicts with their reverent notions of this most famous individual. I've seen this impressive film many times and have had my share of conversations about it, and one universal theme seems to be present: those who have seen this motion picture speak well of it, and those who haven't scorn it. Such is the world, huh?

The Last Temptation of Christ brings Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis' finely-woven novel about the life and works of Jesus to the big screen in this vast, gritty, panoramic tale courtesy of master filmmaker Martin Scorsese. The movie depicts a human world still raw in its youth, and a society seething with resistance to oppression, divided from within, conquered from without, as the Jewish people struggle to maintain their identity in the face of a foreign presence that threatens to stifle them as no invader ever quite has.

In this world lives a simple country man, Jesus of Nazareth, a soul deeply tormented by the conflicting desires that dwell within him. Mirroring his nation, Jesus is one in whom peace is not to be found. Endowed with a sense of purpose, but purpose which mystifies him, the visionary Jesus seeks answers first in an Essene community in the wilderness, later among the outer world, where he preaches and tells parables. Jesus quests to come to know himself and his mission, and in this is aided by his friend and most loyal disciple, the zealot Judas Iscariot, who seeks above all the independence of Judea.

Does Jesus exist, as Judas hopes, to topple the Roman invaders with violence, or is it Jesus' path to serve his destiny through example and holy works? Above all Jesus feels drawn to step away and live his days in the simplicity of normal life, a husband and father whose back is turned on the world and its evils, and it is via this that Satan tempts Christ, even on the cross. Showing Jesus that which he claims might be his should he merely consent to accept it, the Devil offers a last temptation of a wife and family, and lets Jesus behold the future as it could be.

The Last Temptation of Christ is probably the greatest and certainly most cerebral film about Jesus ever shot, and has much to offer anyone who sees it with an open mind.

4 out of 5 stars An underrated, really good movie.......2007-08-01

First off, just to dispose of some stupidities surrounding this film: it isn't a dramatisation of any or all of the Gospels, but of Nikos Kazantzakis' novel 'The Last Temptation'. Criticisms that it doesn't stick to the Bible are therefore irrelevant. Likewise, the Gospels themselves have long been recognised by Biblical scholars as having been written long after the event by people who couldn't possibly have been there at the time, which in turn rules out Mel Gibson's 'The Passion of the Christ' as being in any way more 'authentic' than the source of this movie. Kazantzakis' novel, like the Gospels themselves, are imaginative reconstructions of dubiously historical events, dubious in that by far the most detailed sources for the life and career of Jesus of Nazareth come from people who followed him years after his death. (Check out your copy of 'The DaVinci Code' for background info on them, or better yet, read them, in the form of not just the New Testament but also the Apocryphal Gospels. The latter have been in print for decades.)

Having said all that, there are very very few movies about Jesus, or that even touch on the story of his life, that are at all watchable. The classic-era Hollywood epics such as 'King of Kings' and 'The Greatest Story Ever Told' are not amongst them. For my money, there are only three movies that are at least kind of about Jesus that are genuinely great. One is Pasolini's 'The Gospel According to Matthew', the only film ever to have been given awards by both the Vatican and the Italian Communist Party, because it effectively conveys the burning intensity of Matthew's take on Jesus. The second is 'Monty Python's Life of Brian', in which Jesus only appears for about thirty seconds in the opening scene, but which brutally and hilariously deconstructs religious hysteria. And the last, so far, is this one, in which Jesus is just a guy who has been visited by God, and who would far rather lay the burden down.

Why religious groups hate this film is a mystery to me. Surely a film that focuses on the extent and painfulness of Jesus' self-sacrifice ought to be a...well, a godsend. But apparently most church groups would rather watch Mel Gibson's witless and historically naive snuff movie, a film accurately characterised by the (firmly Catholic) Kevin Smith as a movie in which people spend two hours kicking the c**p out of the Messiah. The Catholic Scorsese, the ex-Calvinist Schrader and the presumably agnostic Dafoe made, between them, one of the most moving and most painful portrayals of Jesus ever to make celluloid, and all the church could do was bitch about it.

It's not the best movie any of these people have ever made, but it's still brilliant. It almost makes this ex-believer want to go back to the Bible.

2 out of 5 stars Boring.......2007-07-17

First of, let me state that I am not religious in any way, shape or form. I never have been, so I watched this DVD solely out of curiousity, and am rating it purely on its entertainment value. As such, I found it boring and poorly made. First of, none of the actors or actresses looked Middle Eastern, considering this movie and all of its characters are Middle Eastern. Second, some of the accents were horrible; case in point is Harvey Keitel's Judas, who has a Brooklyn accent. Third, the casting of William Dafeo is entirely inappropriate. This movie focuses on Jesus in the time just prior to his crucifixion, so Jesus is in his late 20's. William Dafoe looks 35 - 40 in this movie. Fourth, the soundtrack was poor. Neither dramatic nor engaging, it leant no help to the storyline. Last, the way the movie shows Jesus rising to various occasions was quite disappointing. Consider the scene when Jesus stops the stoning of the prostitute. He comes across as timid, half-hearted, and highly unlikely to carry the force needed to stop a mob. All in all, I consider this the worst movie by Martin Scorsese, and do not recommend anyone to watch it.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Just plain bad.......2007-08-31

I try to support black film makers, but this movie was a waste of my money. Bad acting, bad script. It was a waste to put on DVD and I wish I could get my money back.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise for Independent Film Lovers .......2007-08-27

I found this movie to be a pleasant surprise for an independent film and though I found the acting needed work; but I still believe the themes, script, and screenplay to be unique and original.

Love Trap is a romantic drama about two pre-law students who take a chance on love and each other, who up to a certain point in their relationship trusted each other until another love interest enters the picture. Their trust and faith is tested and their perfect love comes in jeopardy.

The narration and dialogue really make you reminisce about college days and the possibilities of true love and the choice to love.

If you are going through troubling relationships and questioning the possibility of true love, this movie will give you hope.

    Reviewer's Notes:
I am a big fan of independent films and most customers have to realize that independent films tend to have low budgets, including casting, which can explain inconsistencies in the film. However, independent films like this one tend to tell unique, original, and untold stories which for me accommodates for some of those inconsistencies.

I do have high standards for the movies I watch and really enjoy box office films for their over-the-top action, drama, and acting, but I still have an appetite for independent films.

So if you are a movie lover and independent film fan, you should give this one a chance and add it to your DVD library.

    4 out of 5 stars Liked it.......2007-07-30

I was actually suprised. This movie was good to me and it had a good story line. The acting needed work, but wasn't too bad. I've seen a lot worse.

4 out of 5 stars Games of Love.......2007-07-19

I thought that it was a good movie the acting could have been better because they were new to acting. But the plot was good about black love and relationships and it made you think that you can't put all your faith in one person whether it your love or your friends.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of film.......2007-07-19

I have to say that I am so very glad that I did not pick this up from the retail store at full price. This has to be without a doubt the dumbest movie ever produced. Everything about it is corny, the acting is terrible. I could not even find anything humourous about it to give it additional stars. Do not buy this, if you want to see it that badly, find it in a video store and rend it or borrow it from a friend who is holding onto it for whatever reason, frankly, I can't see why anyone would want to hold onto this.
