5 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Great Quality.......2007-09-14

Having been a huge fan of this movie since I first saw it on DVD I was delighted to get a chance to see it in HiDef Blu-ray. I had read an earlier release of The Fifth Element on Blu-ray was lackluster at best, not having seen it myself I can't personally comment. However, this Remastered release on Blu-ray is incredible. The action is certainly not missing in this Bruce Willis flick, but just as much there's the comedy. Chris Tucker plays his character (Ruby Rhod) spot-on. Luc Besson does a phenomenal job putting so many "elements" together in this movie. This movie is not one-dimensional like most Action or Comedy movies. Well worth the time and money.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente!!!.......2007-09-13

Qualidade de imagem e áudio espetaculares! Realmente um Blu-ray autêntico e remasterizado, conduzindo à melhor alta definição disponível no mercado. Parabéns à Sony pela correção do re-lançamento desta versão!

1 out of 5 stars Total let-down.......2007-09-10

The video quality is horrible. The Super Bit release on standard DVD was superior. Sad, as it is one of my favorite movies for picture quality and testing out a new system.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid film, highly recommend.......2007-09-10

Uncompressed audio track is clear, dynamic and and natural. Picture is not the best I've seen in Blu-ray but good nonetheless. The movie is of course one of the best scifi movies ever made. Humor is cracking, main characters deep and the traditional story of all triumphant love is well put out.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2007-08-23

Don't know why I haven't added it to my library yet, because it is an all time favorite. It's weird. It's warped. The characters and acting are over the top. Though its not a cartoon, it plays like cartoon characters. Its got romance. Its got impending doom. Its got ancient dudes. Its got a futuristic society. Its got space travel. Its got a really bad villian. Its got Chris Tucker as this WAY out there music star. I guess its got a little of all the things that make a movie entertaining to watch over and over and over again.

Fairly poor image quality -- so bad, that Sony is replacing them all. I ordered this disc two days prior to the replacement offer being announced, so obviously I'm not happy to have to pay another few bucks to ship the disc to Sony and wait for the replacement.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE this movie!!!.......2007-05-28

What can I say? Bruce Willis is at his best, and Milla, an actress, a model, and a singer, all in one, (no, not in the movie), brings her character to life in a beautiful way, like the unfurling of a rose.

The clincher for me was the character, Plavalaguna, the Diva, whose singing performance left me STUNNED. Granted, although I knew it was a bit tweaked, her vocal performance on stage, as well as her presence is enough alone to see this movie, if just to watch her perform "The Mad Scene" from the opera, "Lucia Di Lamamoor". A REAL twist on it, that one must see to experience.

5 out of 5 stars Blu-Ray all the WAY. Bruce Willis in 1080p.......2007-05-26

Blowing things up and the great space scenes can't be matched without 1080p. It's fun to watch over and over.

4 out of 5 stars I simply love the movie.......2007-05-19

Recently i bought a PS3 and one of the first movies i bought on Blu-ray was The Fifth Element.
It is by far not the best translation of a movie to the Blu-ray medium but i simply love this movie so much that i had to have it on Blu-ray!
The transfer of this movie to Blu-ray could be better but still it takes your breath away seeing it in a staggering true HD-resolution.
Sony says it is to re-release this movie after it's been remastered on July 17th so if you want it you could try to wait a few months before buying this masterpeace.
Since i live in The Netherlands and should only be able to watch region B blu-ray discs, i was very pleased to see that this movie ( region A )also could be played on my PS3 so i can buy some of the region A movies and still will be able to play them on a region B player!

As a genre-buster, Six-String Samurai--just your average, run-of-the-mill postapocalyptic kung-fu-rock & roll road movie--has a lot going for it. The film takes place in a Soviet-ruled America (they nuked the U.S. in 1957; with the exception of Lost Vegas [sic] and the badlands around it, the country is a Soviet territory). It revolves around Buddy (Jeffrey Falcon, who bears a remarkable resemblance to Buddy Holly), a guitar-slinger-swordsman who's on his way to Vegas, where he plans to succeed the just-deceased Elvis as the King. Along the way, he picks up an orphaned preteen traveling companion, and the pair's quest leads them to confront various Mad Max-style pop-culture weirdos, the Red Army, and Death--a rival guitarist who looks suspiciously like Guns n' Roses' Slash.

Falcon's background is in Hong Kong cinema, and it shows in this made-on-a-shoestring production, filmed mostly in Palm Springs and Death Valley. (He certainly had enough opportunities to influence the production, since, besides playing the lead, Falcon pitched in as cowriter, coproducer, production designer, and costume designer on the film.) Despite the limited budget, the movie is generally entertaining, though it could probably stand to lose a couple of go-nowhere subplots that account for about 15 minutes of the 91-minute running time. --Randy Silver

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful idiocy.......2007-09-03

This is NOT a story to take seriously. This is simply a fun piece of what Ray Bradbury calls "sublime trash". This has no redeeming values, will teach you absolutely nothing and has no real moral, either. However, it is a fun and wonderful way to spend 90 minutes or so. It moves from one crisis to another quickly, is full of action and has all kinds of one liners. Personally, I loved it, but then, I have a sense of humor unlike some of the other reviewers.

4 out of 5 stars Fun.......2007-02-01

This movie is not to be taken seriously. If you enjoyed Army of Darkness, than you will like Six String Samurai. It is an offbeat comedy that pretends to take itself seriously. It was honored at the Slamdance Awards (An award show for the "bad" movies). Indeed this film was so bad, it's good.
It is not an artsy or big-budget Hollywood movie. Most people might not enjoy it, but if you are willing you might actually laugh. Rent before you buy.

1 out of 5 stars I won't say much, all the 1 star reviewers said it for me.......2006-10-26

This movie was recomended by a friend (who usually has impeccable taste) and it turned out to be the worst movie I have ever seen. I know it's a B movie and it's kind of a badge of honor to be a bad B movie but this movie is so bad it is unwatchable. Trust me, I get all the references. I listen to surf and rockabilly and like indie and samurai movies. The concept is brilliant and they could have gone so many ways with this movie. They didn't. Don't waste your time.

4 out of 5 stars A Post-Apocalyptic, Spaghetti Western, Rock-N-Roll Samurai Film?.......2006-07-28

A post-apocalyptic, spaghetti western, rock-n-roll Samurai film? Yep. That pretty much sums up SIX-STRING SAMURAI. It's quirky. It's B-movie all the way. It's wonderful.

What we have here is a film shot on weekends on a minuscule budget in and around Death Valley, California. It also pays homage to many films; every Clint Eastwood spaghetti western ever made, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, Night of the Living Dead and, of course, The Wizard of Oz, just to name a few.

The movie was dubbed giving it a hokey spaghetti western feel that matched the production values perfectly (very low). "The Kid" in the film (Justin McGuire) was a carbon-copy of the mangy little guy that follows Mel Gibson around in Beyond Thunderdome. There's a family of cannibals and "The Windmillers" who represent the slow brain functions from Night of the Living Dead. And then there are the multiple references to The Wizard of Oz ("Just follow the yellow brick road").

The story's focus is on Buddy (Jeffrey Falcon), a six string carrying, Samurai sword wielding bad boy who wants to be the new "King" of "Lost Vegas." But first he has to get there. Traveling across the desert wasteland of the post-apocalyptic world, Buddy (who looks remarkably like Buddy Holly) has to slash, punch, and scratch his way toward The Emerald City (another Wizard of Oz reference that we see, Lost Vegas looking very much like the gateway to Oz's hometown). Along the way Buddy picks up "The Kid", a young boy who's mother was killed by humans resembling troglodytes. The Kid doesn't speak (initially) and only screams/moans whenever he wants Buddy's attention. But The Kid is good with mechanical objects (cars, motorcycles, bicycles) and the two form a grudging relationship as they travel together. The only issue between them is Buddy's priceless guitar which he nurtures more than The Kid ...in the beginning. But Buddy can play his six string as potently as he can don his sword, giving him a good shot at becoming the King of Lost Vegas.

On Buddy and The Kids' tail, however, is Death (represented as the four horseman of the apocalypse ...but without their horses). Death wants to be/remain the King and kills anyone who gets in his way, leaving a lot of rock-n-roll wannabes as corpses. And in front of Buddy and The Kid is the Russian Army (Oh! Did I forget to mention that the USSR took over the U.S. after it nuked us in 1957?)

After much bloodletting, Death and Buddy have their day on the sand. First comes a guitar duel (Death wields a wickedly good six string himself!), then the sword. But what will happen if Buddy wins? Can he be a true father-figure to The Kid? And what would happen to The Kid if Buddy died? Would Death take the little tike, too?

There are A LOT of well choreographed fight sequences (perhaps one or two too many). The camera work was done with an eye toward professionalism, never being herky-jerky or under -over exposed. The acting was okay. And the story was so ridiculous that suspending disbelief was quite fun. The dialogue often set the tone for the entire production, giving us some great bits like...

Death: "You have failed me for the last...hey, nice shoes." Then we watch Death kill the men wearing the shoes and walk away with new footwear.

The musical score is also pulled off well. The Red Elvises leant their music and themselves for the production (they are the ones with the nice shoes mentioned above). Their musical numbers reminded me very much of The Stray Cats (a band I liked).

If you don't mind low production standards but enjoy spoofs with a good, if somewhat ridiculous, script, then slip this little B-flick into your DVD player and bask in its foolishness. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Strange, Fun, and Addicting.......2006-02-24

When I first heard about this movie from a friend, I thought -- B-Movie/Cult Film. But this movie is so much more than a Cult Film and doesn't have the gore of a B-Movie. The music is fantastic, the acting is great, and the premise -- although far-fetched -- is just wacky enough to get you addicted. This is a movie you'll want to watch over and over again. And if you want some great Ska-Punk-Rockabilly, I suggest you pick up the Soundtrack or buy some Red Elvis' albums.

5 out of 5 stars Where did he learn to negotiate like that?.......2006-05-28

First time I watched this it was one of those three star things that you could take or leave. Yes it had all the elements (except the fifth) that make for a good shoot-um-up space thing. But I just looked at it as an action movie.

For some reason this movie can grow on you and you find yourself anticipating the next move. Then you see things that you did not see the first time. Then you start to mouth the words. Soon this turns into a five star movie with a plot, good guys, bad guys, and good bad guys. Soon you start looking in your auto-wash to see if you left anything in there.

An ancient thereat of dome looms over the earth. An ancient religion keeps the secret of the doom and the secret of the defense (the fifth element.) Prophecy turns into reality and it is up to Major Koeben Dallas (Bruce Willis) to find the fifth element and save the earth.

Will he be able to do this and at what emotional expense?

Ancient curses, all-powerful monsters, shape-changing assassins, scantily-clad stewardesses, laser battles, huge explosions, a perfect woman, a malcontent hero--what more can you ask of a big-budget science fiction movie? Luc Besson's high-octane film incorporates presidents, rock stars, and cab drivers into its peculiar plot, traversing worlds and encountering some pretty wild aliens. Bruce Willis stars as a down-and-out cabbie who must win the love of Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) to save Earth from destruction by Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg (Gary Oldman) and a dark, unearthly force that makes Darth Vader look like an Ewok. --Geoff Riley

Movie looks and sounds great. Get this version over the regular 2 disk collectors edition.... its super bit!!!!

5 out of 5 stars I watch it Everytime its on!.......2007-08-28

Don't know why I haven't added it to my library yet, because it is an all time favorite. It's weird. It's warped. The characters and acting are over the top. Though its not a cartoon, it plays like cartoon characters. Its got romance. Its got impending doom. Its got ancient dudes. Its got a futuristic society. Its got space travel. Its got a really bad villian. Its got Chris Tucker as this WAY out there music star. I guess its got a little of all the things that make a movie entertaining to watch over and over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Watch this!.......2007-08-08

The 5th element is one of the best movies I have ever seen (which is saying a lot). I have lost count of the number of times that I have watched it; suffice it to say that it is worth watching. I even liked the blatant advertising by McDonalds in the movie.

1 out of 5 stars Not what i expected.......2007-07-28

I was rather disappointed when i watched this movie for the first time. It made absolutely no sense whatsoever. They could have at least included a few acid tabs with the DVD. They might have made this pap a little more comprehensible

A silly but well paced sci fi action film. Excellent special effects. You know the good guys will prevail but how they prevail against all odds will keep you interested til the end.

Description

Friends Mamoru and Yuji are aimless young men stuck in dead-end jobs in a dreary factory in Tokyo. Mamoru, the more antisocial of the two, is obsessed with his pet project of acclimating a poisonous jellyfish to fresh water by gradually changing the water in its tank. One night, he inexplicably murders his boss' family and is sentenced to death. Yuji, left to continue the jellyfish experiment, befriends Mamoru's estranged father, and the two form a bond. But Yuji's attachment to the jellyfish is even stronger, and problems arise when he accidentally releases the poisonous creature into the canals of Tokyo

4 out of 5 stars It's Kiyoshi Kurosawa-- of course it's good!.......2007-03-13

Bright Future (Kiyoshi Kurosawa, 2002)

Kiyoshi Kurosawa gets away from the niche he's carved out in the atmospheric-horror genre for this odd little comedy/drama that features a seriously loaded cast and a truly absurd premise. Fans of Kurosawa should be warned that there aren't any ghosts, serial killers, or creepy crawling children to be found here, though you do get some poisonous jellyfish and a bit of senseless (and completely offscreen) violence. Also, those who come to this because of critics' likening it to the films of David Lynch might be best warned that this is not the best entrance point into the world of Kurosawa, despite its Palme d'Or nomination; the (justly) internationally-renowned Cure is a great place to start. Come back to this one, but make sure you do.

Nimura (Azumi's Jo Odagiri) and Arita (The Last Life in the Universe's Tadanobu Asano) are brothers who spend their time slacking off in arcades when not working at a towel factory. Their boss, Fujiwara (The Hidden Blade's Takashi Sasano) is a well-meaning guy, if a bit obnoxious. He certainly doesn't deserve to have his entire family slaughtered, but Arita does so, for no reason that anyone can discern, and goes to prison for life. He passes the care of the only thing in the world that matters to him-- a poisonous jellyfish he's trying to adapt to life in fresh water-- to Nimura. Their father Shinichiro (Tatuya Fuji, recently seen in The Man in White), shaken by Arita's act, attempts to heal the rift that's developed between Nimura and him.

Kurosawa is a fine director; if any of the new crop of young Japanese autuers deserves to carry the Kurosawa name, it's Kiyoshi (though he is no relation to the more famous filmmaker to bear that surname). His movies are sparse, understated affairs where far more goes on between the lines than in them, and Bright Future is no exception to this. Expect a slow, deliberate drama, and there's a lot to be gotten out of this; Kurosawa gets top performances out of his actors every time, and he retains cinematographer Takahide Shimanushi (Séance) , who's done fine work for him previously. The Lynch comparison comes in not only in the absurdity of the basic premise, but in the way Kurosawa and Shimanushi shot this film; Kurosawa knows chiaroscuro, and exploits it, much as Lynch (or, more recently, David Fincher) does. More stuff happens in David Lynch pictures, though. Here, you're just supposed to watch it, then spend a lot of time thinking about it. The payoff is great, though "understated" is perhaps not strong enough a word. A lovely little film. *** ½

4 out of 5 stars One of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's finest films.......2006-09-21

Kiyoshi Kurosawa is becoming one of my favorite current filmmakers, and the further he gets from by-the-book J-horror (preferring to reach further into less categorizable reaches of his own cinematic imagination), the better I think he is.

Deeper meanings mingle with absurdist humor, and the kind of chance occurrences that enliven the fiction of Paul Auster and Haruki Murakami also figure heavily in Kurosawa's films; cinematically, everything from Lynch or Fellini to "Dirty Harry" can be a touchstone for further exploration.

BRIGHT FUTURE is like an improved CHARISMA - more refined, less loony, and considerably more poetic, but Kiyoshi Kurosawa's many thematic concerns - trashing of the environment, a sense of depersonalization (and discreet nihilism) in younger/future generations, the erosion of a society's cohesiveness (especially when that erosion originates within, and not from some external source) - are handled very well - the last shot offers his darkest and most ironic humor, with the cross-generational understanding becoming something quietly heroic evoking certain past masters of Japanese film. A sense that - if younger generations have drifted towards a nihilism that could destroy them or you, it is balanced by an equally withering take on the older generations that somehow let them down; this film in many ways visualizes the idea of getting over it, and moving on with life (after presenting some of the consequences for not doing so).

Tadanobu Asano's presence here is somewhat hyped (definitely on the DVD cover), undoubtedly due to his ascendant global stardom, but his performance here is eclipsed by co-stars Joe Odagiri and Tatsuya Fuji, who both deliver dynamic performances of great range and control.

Mysterious, poetic, beautifully shot (on DV), open to many interpretations, and one of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's finest.

-David Alston

4 out of 5 stars great look at modern Japan.......2006-03-24

Having lived in Japan, I connected with this film immmediately. I would say that this type of Japanese filmmaking is a lot like the soaps that air on Japanese television. No incredible lighting effects, excessive props or music scores. The camera basically sits their and shows people and what they do. That's about it. I highly doubt anyone who is not Japanese or does not have an idea about what Japanese culture is like will like this film. I'm not going to go on like some people and talk about the "artistic value" of the film. The film is what it is, a story about a couple of guys who try to get a jellyfish to swim in fresh water.

4 out of 5 stars Red Jellyfish and Brine Shrimp.......2005-09-07

Working at a large laundry cleaning service, Nimura Yuji spends most of his days sorting through clothing and transferring loads of clothing from washers to dryers. While this is not the most mentally stimulating or satisfying work, Nimura is at least accompanied by his best friend Arita Mamoru during his days of drudgery. While his life might be quite dull Nimura is able to escape his humdrum world by entering the realm of dreams where the future is bright. However, in the waking world Nimura seems to be a bit at a loss. He gets into fight over the smallest things such as the pieces of fried chicken in his lunch box were a bit small and it seems that without the guidance of Mamoru Yuji would not be able to survive.

Content hanging out at Mamoru's apartment, where he likes to feed Mamoru's pet jellyfish, and listening to music, Nimura's isolated world is invaded when his boss, Mr. Fujiwara, begins to wedge his way into his life. It begins small. Mr. Fujiwara asks the two young men to help him move his daughter's new desk upstairs and asks them to stay afterwards for dinner, but soon he is asking the two young to become fulltime employees and offers them large bonuses. Not sure if they want to accept the bonuses and the fulltime employment, Mamoru and Nimura try to avoid Mr. Fujiwara, but the older man invites himself over to Mamoru's home where he makes himself at home by plopping in front of the TV. Nimura is quite upset at the intrusion, but it is Mamoru who upsets the boss by not warning him when he sticks his hand in the poisonous jellyfish's tank. When accused by his boss, Mamoru quits his job. Left alone at work, Nimura's hatred towards his boss grows until one night, gripping a steel pipe; he is determined to kill his boss. However, when he arrives at his boss's house he finds the bloody corpses of his boss and his boss's wife in their bedroom. Mamoru is soon arrested and put in prison. Although Nimura visits his friend in prison, he is soon left alone and the divide between his reality and his world of dreams soon begins to erode.

Bright Future is the first film that I have watched by Kurosawa Kiyoshi. A quiet work, filled with light, whimsical music, Bright Future is a visual delight, especially when the red jellyfish are on screen. Odagiri Jo, Nimura, and Asano Tadanobu, Mamoru, both do excellent jobs of acting and one can truly feel how much Odagiri's character depends on Asano's. However, my favorite bit of acting within the film was performed by Fuji Tatsuya, the actor who starred in Oshima Nagisa's Realm of the Senses. There is one scene that is truly heartbreaking when Fuji's character is searching for Nimura's. A good film overall, but one I believe needs repeated viewing in order to figure out its multifaceted nuances.

4 out of 5 stars Donnie Darko and his pet jellyfish.......2005-08-30

This movie is worth watching just for the street "gang" in Che Guevara T-shirts. Post Modern Japan must be a very strange place-I wish I understood this movie better, but I did enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect marriage of sci-fi and comedy.......2006-10-28

The Fifth Element is one of Luc Besson's best (and easiest to watch) films. The director that brought us La Femme Nikita (the real thing, not the lame Bridget Fonda movie) and Léon reveals his true genius in this visually stunning movie. True, Luc Besson made some horribly bad action movies (did I mention the Transporter yet?) but here he builds a visually perfect creation and drives his lead actors to give superb performances. Milla Jovovich is stunning playing the perfect being (who better to play that role...) and Bruce Willis shows his amazing comic talent and perfect timing. Adding fabulous support roles by Gary Oldman (the perfect villain) and Chris Tucker completes the concussion and makes it fit for a king.

All in all, a highly entertaining movie that is thrilling, funny, and at some points quite profound. If you haven't seen it yet, there's not time better than now. Green?
