Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver form the quintessential indie-film odd couple in this intimately observed drama that makes a memorable detour from the usual high-concept, special effects-laden studio fare. Rickman is in his element as Alex, a morose, laconic ex-con just released from prison. A tragic twist of fate brings him to a Canadian small town and the doorstep of Linda, a functional autistic woman with a decidedly anti-social personality. Weaver is a wonder in a fiercely committed, vanity-free performance. "I don't like normal people," Linda states, and neither does Snow Cake, the heart of which is clearly with the outcasts and misfits, including Vivienne (Emily Hampshire), Linda's vivacious, hitchhiking daughter, who bums a ride with Alex because he looks lonely ("Lonely people have the best stories," she observes) and Linda's neighbor, Maggie (Carrie-Ann Moss), a nurturing type who is very quick to take damaged soul Alex into her bed. This is a palpably heartfelt project (screenwriter Angela Pell has an autistic daughter) that--the unfortunate title notwithstanding--mostly manages to avoid the cloying or manipulative. The smiling faces pictured on the DVD cover suggest an upbeat romantic comedy, but Snow Cake is a slice of something much more filling. --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars The must-see drama of the year!.......2007-09-13

This movie was fascinating and full of little surprises that made me laugh and cry alternately. One of the unique aspects of Snow Cake is that the cast is made up of sci-fi/action heavyweights! Sigourney Weaver is all too used to dousing slimy aliens with flamethrowers; Alan Rickman generally chews scenery as the sorcerer Severus Snape; and Carrie-Anne Moss will go down in history as the leather-clad, cool-shades-donning femme fatale of the Matrix trilogy. Yet here we get to see an overwhelmingly tender and subtle side to these actors, who are all absolutely brilliant in a small drama as well as their usual big box office outings. I urge anyone who has an interest in the human condition to watch this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2007-09-08

I absolutely loved this movie. I fell in love with the characters immediately. The plot was amazing. I also work with Autistic children and loved the way the movie was so accurate with the behaviors of people with autism. Heart touching movie everyone should see!

4 out of 5 stars "Your comments are interesting and tough to answer.",per Sigourney Weaver! .......2007-09-06

My name is Andre Jonathan, and I had the pleasure to see the premiere screening with the Cast,Director, and Writer of this movie at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. In addition, I was chosen from a few to comment, and ask a question to Sigourney Weaver personally during the Q&A. Moreover, my comment and question, along with my presentation I guess,to my surprise, was the only one to get applause and laughter from the audiance;in which Ms. Weaver's response was "that's a tough and interesting question to answer",and then she began elaborating for at least three(3)minuets to my question/comment). I don't quite remember what I said per se, but it had something to do with her advertent and/or inadvertent comedic skills I thought she displayed in a serious character role as an autistic woman! By the way, I thought the movie was touching, moving, serious, semi-provocative, and at times ackwardly funny! Furthermore, the overall CAST was COMPLIMENTRY & GREAT!!

Thanks,
Andre Jonathan

5 out of 5 stars A Gem.......2007-06-24

I saw this movie on PPV and had been waiting for it a long time. I initially wanted to see it because of Alan Rickman (Alec). He was wonderful as usual, but his real genius in this film was to sit back and let Sigourney Weaver (Linda) play off of him. Not that Rickman didn't have his moments, but Weaver was really outstanding. In one scene, Alec is sobbing uncontrollably and Linda looks at him quizzically and asks if there is something wrong with the tea. That's just one little gem of a scene.

Don't look for romantic fireworks or a dramatic ending in this movie. It's just the story of three people with their own secrets brought together by a tragic event. I found myself drawn into their lives, as they were drawn into each other's lives.

Once you see this movie, you will understand why I say it was "dalzious."

If you've ever wanted to hear Jack Nicholson sing (or try to) or marvel at the sight of Ann-Margret drunkenly cavorting in a cascade of baked beans, Tommy is the movie you've been waiting for. As it turns out, the Who's brilliant rock opera is sublimely matched to director Ken Russell's penchant for cinematic excess, and this 1975 production finds Russell at the peak of his filmmaking audacity. It's a fever-dream of musical bombast, custom-fit to the thematic ambition of Pete Townshend's epic rock drama, revolving around the titular "deaf, dumb, and blind kid" (played by Who vocalist Roger Daltrey) who survives the childhood trauma that stole his senses to become a Pinball Wizard messiah in Townshend's grandiose attack on the hypocrisy of organized religion.

The story is remarkably coherent considering the hypnotic dream-state induced by Russell's visuals. Tommy's odyssey is rendered through wall-to-wall music, each song representing a pivotal chapter in Tommy's chronology, from the bloodstream shock of "The Acid Queen" (performed to the hilt by Tina Turner) to Nicholson's turn as a well-intentioned physician, Elton John's towering rendition of "Pinball Wizard," and Daltrey's epiphanous rendition of "I'm Free." Other performers include Eric Clapton and (most outrageously) the Who's drummer Keith Moon, and through it all Russell is almost religiously faithful to Townshend's artistic vision. Although it divided critics when first released, Tommy now looks likes a minor classic of gonzo cinema, worthy of the musical genius that fueled its creation. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Not Who but Why?.......2007-09-04

"Tommy, can you hear me?" I wish I couldn't. A cross between a Broadway musical and rock concert, "Tommy" appeals to fans of neither. If the Who gets you jumping with their heavy, blaring waves of distorted power chords, you'd think there'd be something here for you. You'd think that and you'd be wrong.

In the vein of "Westside Story," Pete Townshend is more in step with Rogers and Hammerstein than Lennon and McCartney. If you have an itch to do this kind of thing fine, but don't drag the good name of the Who down with you. In fact, do it under a pseudonym and keep from tarnishing the Townshend family name as well.

I know it's like a largely forgotten thirty year old movie, but this is like fodder for Mystery Science Theater 3000 rather than something worthy of the Who. I could almost hear my inner-Crow heckling the screen throughout.

Seeing Roger Daultry's expressionless gaze out of my television screen at first made me think, no... no one could possibly have a visage that bereft of the ability to emote, until I realized that I was probably wearing the same look being so disappointed in this project by a band I normally have respect for.

At first I groaned when seeing Elton John had a role here, but when it was all said and done, he was the best part of the film. Both his character of the bully pinball champion and his version of "Pinball Wizard" was more engaging than any other sequence. But for all his effort, they even mis-credited his character at the end by calling him the Pinball Wizard instead of the Champ; Tommy was the Pinball Wizard, right? But who cares.

Certainly not the best rock opera/concept album, "Tommy" does have some claims to being one of the first; I guess if you're a historian of pop-culture you may want view this so you can jot this film down in the footnotes of some rock dissertation somewhere, but otherwise, skip it.

2 out of 5 stars 'Tommy': That "Deaf, Dumb, and Blind Kid" Gets a Lame Treatment.......2007-08-21

It's hard to downgrade a movie that is inventive. Despite a musical montage that takes risks, `Tommy' is an adventure that mostly fails. It wasn't a bad idea to take the formidable Who rock opera and make it into a musical, but it is an indictment that whenever anybody other than Roger Daltry sings, it is awfully lame. Most of the movie is out of synch.

First of all, the lip-synched singing is too obvious throughout. Oliver Reed (notably Bill Sykes of `Oliver' fame) and Anne Margaret play Tommy's parents, but neither one gives weight to the music, and only Reed barely succeeds with the acting. The story is planted ably enough. Daltry plays the titled character with admirable earnestness. The production is stiff, however, hardly moving, except in an auditorium pinball scene. A rock opera needs to be in motion, and the director has merely cut and paste most scenes as still lifes--deadly to the movie's spirit. It all seems forced.

Nevertheless, there are redeeming values. Some of the symbolism works. Both Tina Turner and Elton John give spirited performances (as the "Acid Queen" and Tommy's pinball rival respectively). A surrealistic living room scene is presented that is truly fluid and engaging. If they had only done the rest of the movie this way, it would have lived up to the breakthrough Who album. (If you must [understandably] satisfy your curiosity, Jack Nicholson's cameo appearance as the Doctor is one of the best in the show.)

5 out of 5 stars A rock opera? Why not?.......2007-07-27

The concept of a rock opera must have seemed experimental at best, and downright bad at worst, to people who dared think about it in the late Sixties and early Seventies (after all, some older folks felt sour enough that rock-and-roll existed at all), but happily, "Tommy" made it work.

Some of the props and imagery used in the film struck me as portmanteau versions of the sort of British psychedelia I saw when I watched "A Clockwork Orange": maybe it is and maybe it isn't. The movie opens with Tommy's father being called to serve as a fighter pilot in the RAF in WW2 and getting shot down, then later morphing (inside Tommy's mind) to a kind of savior figure, someone he never had a chance to meet but wishes he could.

Anyhow, as with most British psychedelic films of that era, "Tommy" impressed me enough that I understood why it broke such ground in its day... and the image of a lovely cabaret dancer running around wearing a white ballet skirt, and a gas mask on her face (remember, Tommy was born at the close of the War), will be forever stamped in my memory! :-D

4 out of 5 stars Rockin' Film.......2007-07-25

I am not sure of Ann-Margaret and Oliver Reed were the best choice for Tommy, but they do bring lots of talent to the score.

Tina Turner and Jack Nicholson absolutely steal the show. If you need any reason to watch this film or listen to the soundtrack, it should be for Tina and Jack.

The film does not seem as dated as say the film version of Hair, but if it were refilmed today it would be amazing.

Adapted from Daniel Keyes's novel Flowers for Algernon, Charly must be viewed as a soap opera of and for its zeitgeist--the halcyon '60s, when "natural" was nirvana, the air hummed with the mantra "Everybody's beautiful," and all ills stemmed from institutional monoliths such as Science, Government, Education, Religion. Accordingly, Charly (Cliff Robertson) is a 30-year-old retardate whose doofus sweetness makes him superior to most able-minded folk, whether they're the bigoted dolts he sweeps floors for or the ambitious scientists who see him as the human equivalent of Algernon, a mouse they've surgically (but impermanently) smartened up. Naturally, post-op Charly, sporting a genius IQ, "sees things as they are." Trotted out as the neurosurgeons' poster boy, he stands up to the "learned" audience--shot as faceless, inhuman interrogators. He's every '60s flower child, berating his "elders" for blighting their brave new world.

The one gift Charly gets out of becoming Brainiac is sex. In a lengthy montage resembling a retro TV commercial, he and his special-ed teacher (Claire Bloom, madonna with eternal Mona Lisa smile) romp through an Edenic outdoors, their embraces hallowed by sunlight glinting through leaves, moonlight glinting on water, and sappy Ravi Shankar music. (Stylistic clichés also include embarrassing outbreaks of split screens and multiple small screens within the frame, notably when rebellious Charly turns biker.) Robertson's performance is well-meaning but hokey. Still, in the penultimate moments when Charly begins to slide back into retardation, the actor achieves a genuine tragic gravity, and he became a surprise Oscar winner for his pains. --Kathleen Murphy

    Description

From the classic Daniel Keyes novel Flowers for Algernon comes this "moving" (Boxoffice) and unforgettable adaptation. Featuring an Academy AwardÂ(r)-winning* performance by Cliff Robertson and a "shrewd, talented" score (Variety) by Ravi Shankar, this timeless tearjerker is "definitely one to see" (Cue). When a mentally retarded man named Charly (Robertson) undergoes experimental brain surgery, he is miraculously freed from the prison of his own mind. As his IQ soars to genius proportions, Charly's eyes are opened to a world he's never truly seen. But when the effects of his operation inexplicably begin to fade, Charly must find a way to halt his regression before his own mind destroys his life, his newfound romance and the man he's become. *1968: Actor

at age 6 my parents had a lot of tests done on me . it was determined that i had a lot of learning difficulties . i was put in special education and given ritalin for 7 years . i was really enthralled by the picture (which i had not seen until my mid forties) . i wept often (but it was a good thing) . i really strongly recommend this wonderful picture to anyone who had or has learning problems . as one person wrote , these things are very subjective . that is true . i love the film and want to buy it . my wife told me about it for many years . i hope you'll enjoy it (rent it first) . perhaps you'll see some of your own life (if the circumstances fit) in this timeless and wonderful picture .

    4 out of 5 stars Charly.......2007-08-10

While the film is "outdated" in its photographic methods, the message about how we tend to deal with the mentally retarded still bears our attention. And of course Cliff is superb.

When I think of my favorite movie with Cliff Robertson...this is it.
Based on Flowers for Algernon.....this is the movie version. It lets us painfully see sometimes....how ignorance can be bliss and reality can rear it's ugly head. But at the same time there is alot of joy as you watch Charly growth in his learning process. I love this movie.

3 out of 5 stars Another example of "never see the movie soon after reading the book.".......2007-07-18

    Charly (Ralph Nelson, 1968)

Any list of Hollywood's greatest screenwriters would have to include Stirling Silliphant. Village of the Damned. Nightfall. In the Heat of the Night. Telefon. The Towering Inferno. But, like most screenwriters, every once in a while, he got it wrong. The Poseidon Adventure. The Swarm. Over the Top. Yes, Over the Top, the infamous Sylvester Stallone arm wrestling movie. That was him. Where Charly falls onto this line probably depends on how you feel about the novel.

Loosely based on Daniel Keyes' classic Flowers for Algernon, Charly is the story of Charlie Gordon, a mentally retarded man who undergoes an experimental brain operation that makes him smart, and the trials and tribulations that come from getting everything you wish for. I tried to look at Charly as being an entirely separate beast from the novel, but I'm not sure that's the way to go with this one. Whether I look at it in comparison or not, the movie still suffers.

Compared to the novel, the difference is that Charlie Gordon (Cliff Robertson, who won a Best Actor Oscar for his performance) himself is an emasculated character, a passive observer of events, where the novel's Charlie was active, a participant in things. Many of the novel's subplots that made Charlie into a man of action have been removed; he's no longer the inquisitive scientist who discovers the seeds of his own downfall, but someone who's asked to help stop that downfall after it's revealed to him. His parents are gone; the complex relationship he has with his teacher Alice (here played by The Haunting's Claire Bloom) is turned into a simple, if slightly confusing, love story. (Confusing because there's a fiance mentioned who pops up nowhere in the book; he disappears again as soon as it's convenient, getting no actual screen time.) I understand that even a slim novel has to be trimmed to fit into movie form, but other things were added that brought nothing of comparable (or measurable) value to the table. Which leads me to the other option.

Taken on its own, it's an intriguing beginning that goes horribly, horribly wrong about two-thirds of the way through, when it stops being a story about a guy in an interesting situation and becomes a one-dimensional piece of political screed barely worthy of existence. (I kept thinking about Slaughterhouse-Five during the awful Q&A scene.) It does improve again after that, but that scene, sitting in the conceptual center of the film with no anchor, and indeed no reason for being there (it's a pivotal scene in the novel, though it plays out in a much different manner), is claptrap of the most nauseating kind.

I know part of my reaction to the movie is my own fault. I usually stick to my rule about not seeing a film adaptation until at least a year after I read the associated book. That said, Flowers for Algernon was such an amazing book, I wanted to see the movie ASAP. Well, the saying "the bigger they are..." applies here, most definitely. It wouldn't be an awful film, without the inclusion of that one horribly offensive scene. That, however, drags the whole thing down. ** ½

Jamie Foxx's uncannily accurate performance isn't the only good thing about Ray. Riding high on a wave of Oscar buzz, Foxx proved himself worthy of all the hype by portraying blind R&B legend Ray Charles in a warts-and-all performance that Charles approved shortly before his death in June 2004. Despite a few dramatic embellishments of actual incidents (such as the suggestion that the accidental drowning of Charles's younger brother caused all the inner demons that Charles would battle into adulthood), the film does a remarkable job of summarizing Charles's strengths as a musical innovator and his weaknesses as a philandering heroin addict who recorded some of his best songs while flying high as a kite. Foxx seems to be channeling Charles himself, and as he did with the life of Ritchie Valens in La Bamba, director Taylor Hackford gets most of the period details absolutely right as he chronicles Ray's rise from "chitlin circuit" performer in the early '50s to his much-deserved elevation to legendary status as one of the all-time great musicians. Foxx expertly lip-syncs to Ray Charles' classic recordings, but you could swear he's the real deal in a film that honors Ray Charles without sanitizing his once-messy life. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars One brilliant musician........2007-08-26

This 2004 movie is about the life and career of Ray Charles, the blind musician. Ray was not born blind, but became blind at 6 after having glaucoma. We are shown that Ray got his strength from his mother who never babied him and made him do things on his own. Ray's struggle through life was hard--fighting off people who ripped him off, and a long time heroin addiction. Ray was also, himself a ruthless businessman at times. Ray Charles marries his "B" and they were together for many years, despite his many affairs. I am not a big fan of his music, but this film held me. It truly is a great movie! It shows that no matter how handicapped one is, you can do what you dream of as long as you believe in yourselve. The performance of Jamie Fox is excellent! He truly showed how good an actor he can be. They movie was a little long (a little over 3 hours), hence the 4 stars, not 5--- I was getting a little impatient. Overall a must see film!

    5 out of 5 stars Very uplifting.......2007-07-07

Really good. Jamie Foxx comes into his own here. Very enjoyable. Definetely deserved the oscar it got.

4 out of 5 stars Its keen eye for detail makes for a wonderful movie experience..........2007-06-21

A lot of love circulates around Jamie Foxx's Oscar winning performance here, and yes he did do a wonderful imitation of the real thing, but to me `Ray' has a lot more deserving areas to give consideration and appreciation. For one, the set designs are brilliant, the lighting and mood of just about every scene is fantastic and the musical numbers, while all actual recordings, are choreographed in such a way that you could swear Foxx did all his own singing. Case in point, there is a scene where Ray is singing in a club and in the recording some of the first words out of his mouth are mumbled and so to make it authentic Jamie knocks the microphone off balance for a moment. It's the little touches like that one that make this movie authentic, accurate and worth while.

I did enjoy Foxx, so don't get me wrong, but I did feel that his work in `Collateral' was more deserving of the praise. The main problem I have with Foxx's performance is that he invests so much time and energy into getting Ray down that he forgets to infuse enough of himself into the performance to make Jamie the actor stand out aside from Ray the character. But, with that little jab of criticism I will admit that he's a force on screen and demands you pay attention.

That said, to me the real star of this film is the man behind the camera, Taylor Hackford. His acute eye for detail is fantastic here, and is a huge step up from his previous work. Technically `Ray' is far from my favorite biopic, even in the year of the biopic it falls short of perfection and or utter brilliance, but when `Ray' hits its mark it hits it with such beautiful depth and clarity that it makes up for its minor shortcomings. Did it deserve a `Best Picture' Oscar nomination? Not really, but I'm not going to whine about that too much.

Another aspect of the film that shines like a diamond among pearls is the impressive female supporting cast, all of which deserved any and all recognition and praise for they all were essential in not only developing the man that was Ray into a full blown character study but they were also pertinent in making `Ray' the film a film entertaining and relatable from beginning to end. Kerry Washington, an actress I've just fallen in love with over the years, gives such a brutally honest performance as Charles wife, the woman who stands by her man and supports him despite his addictions to drugs and loose women. Regina King gives probably the most explosive performance of the bunch as Margie, one of Ray's backup singers and his obsessive secret lover. Her brilliance on screen is matched only by her spunk and heart and it's a true pleasure to watch her chew each and every scene she encounters. Sharon Warren also does a splendid job as Ray's mother and is sure to stand out as a remembered favorite.

The life of Ray Charles was a hard one, full of deceit, drugs, women and pressure. He was abused, taken advantage of and used and on the other side he abused, took advantage of and used others in the process, but the true story of Ray Charles is a story about overcoming our weaknesses and growing into the person we knew we had in us all along, the person who has been dying to come out but just needed to opportunity. My one big disappointment with this film is that it never truly shows us the recovery Ray made. We see his struggles, his problems and his faults. We see him finally realize he needs help but we never see him truly change, we just read about it in a montage of newspaper clippings that litter the final frames of the film. It's a small quaral I know, but it's one I'm not ready to let go of. If the ending had only added as much depth as the beginning and middle had then maybe this would have been a more deserving film to me, but in the end, even with my issue included, `Ray' is still a wonderful biopic, one that I'm happy to have seen and will most definitely see again.

4 out of 5 stars Jamie Foxx revives the American Legend.......2007-06-06

The movie "Ray", directed by Taylor Hackford, is a compelling drama about the journey of a man battling against poverty, racism, and of course, overcoming his blindness, in order to express his talent. It is based on a true story about the life of a black musician named Ray Charles.

Ray Charles' youth was filled with tragedy, from watching his younger brother drown to losing his sight at the age seven. His mother taught him to take care of himself and not to depend on anyone for help. Ray grew up strong and independent, and his passion for music, which was a strong influence in his life before the loss of his eyesight, never faded. As a teenager, Ray set out on his own shortly after his mother's death and made his way across the United States from Florida to Seattle. Soon after arriving in Seattle, Ray's real journey of making himself renowned began.

Jamie Foxx holds the challenging role of Ray Charles and greatly depicts the latter's life in this movie. "Ray" is an interpretation of the extraordinary life of Ray Charles who, in spite of his inability to see, became a wonderful musician and internationally renowned performer. The task of playing the role of a person the whole world knows is very difficult, but doing so and playing the role of a blind person at the same time seems impossible! Well, Jamie did it. During the whole span of the movie, it feels as if Ray Charles is really back with us. As the movie unfolds, we discover a character so full of life and passion that it seems real. Foxx's musical abilities further complete the portrait, not imitation, of Ray Charles. Indeed, the film features many of Ray Charles songs and it does a good job of tracing his music career.

However, Jamie Foxx's acting skills are overshadowed by the length of the movie, which is 150 minutes long and holds a lot of repetition. Also, we are under the impression that the director is trying to cram every important fact of Ray's life into the whole 2 ½ hours. It would have been possible to remove from 10 to 20 minutes of scenes that render us impatient and seem unnecessary, however this would have made it hard for the director to input many of Ray Charles' hits in the movie, which somewhat makes up for the waiting.

In addition to the lengthiness of the movie, the large emphasis on Ray's personal life, instead of showing us more of the making of his music, was exasperating. Alright, it doesn't hurt to know that Ray was a womanizer who often got high on heroin, but brutally showing a side of Ray Charles that is unknown to most people may not be what every audience is looking for. What's more the film is supposed to captivate our attention, not bore us. A lack of suspense and drama would certainly be the cause for that: I felt my attention weaving on and off during the whole movie.

As a whole, I think that "Ray" is an excellent movie which reveals many of the problems our society faces today and shows the competitiveness present in the world, notably in the music realm. The long length of the movie is forgiven thanks to the outstanding acting of Jamie Foxx. However, I still believe that naming "Ray" as best movie of the year 2004 is a stretch. At least we were able to relive the numerous hits that Ray Charles wrote during his successful career.

It's astonishing that one man could have written so many memorable songs, but musical gems keep popping up in De-Lovely, about the life and loves of Cole Porter. Played by Kevin Kline (In & Out, A Fish Called Wanda), an elderly Porter is summoned by a mysterious director (Jonathan Pryce, Brazil) to view his own story, which unfolds as a series of theatrical tableaux. The movie is open (if a bit chaste) about Porter's homosexuality, but argues that the love of his life was still his devoted platonic relationship with Linda Lee (Ashley Judd, Ruby in Paradise, Kiss the Girls). Unfortunately, the narrative suffers from the fate of many biographies; by trying to cram in a person's entire life, it ends up a collection of snapshots without depth or context. The parade of celebrity singers (Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow) were apparently chosen for their jarringly modern vocal mannerisms. --Bret Fetzer

    Description

"The most unusual and enchanting musical in years" (Roger Ebert), this cinematic ode to legendary composer Cole Porter is at once buoyantly fun and "heartbreakingly beautiful" (Liz Smith). OscarÂ(r) winner* Kevin Kline (The Ice Storm) is "perfection" (Rolling Stone) as the elegant and deeply complex Porter in a film that offers "knockout performances" (Gene Shalit) from Natalie Cole, Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, Diana Krall, Alanis Morissette and Robbie Williams, and "melancholy, wit and style to burn" (The Philadelphia Inquirer)! From Paris to Venice to Broadway to Hollywood, the lives of Cole (Kline) and Linda (Ashley Judd) Porter were never less thanglamorous and wildly unconventional. Though Cole's thirst for life strained their marriage, Linda never stopped being his muse, inspiring some of the greatest songs of the twentieth century.*1988: Supporting Actor, A Fish Called Wanda

    5 out of 5 stars Lovely Indeed.......2007-07-12

The complex and amazing life of Cole Porter is told in De-Lovely, a musical and love story unlike any other I've seen. Kevin Kline is brilliant as always in the lead role, as a gay man who's in love with a woman. Ashley Judd, who's never looked more gorgeous, plays Linda, who knows all about Porter's "extra-curricular" interests, yet becomes his wife, his lifelong companion, and his muse.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2007-06-01

Not only did this give wonderful insight to the famed composer Cole Porter, Kevin Kline (one of the most underated actors around) was mesmerizing. I play it over and over also to hear the great soundtrack!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Musical Bio.......2007-05-15

Great movie. Fabulous scoring to the theme. A great way to present Cole Porter's life and music.

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorite movies of all time!.......2007-05-11

The story of Cole Porter's life, and his wife Linda Porter. I love this movie. After viewing, I found myself humming the songs of the famous Cole Porter, of which many I did not even realize he wrote.

The acting in this movie is exquisite. Both Kevin Klein and Ashley Judd are perfect in their parts as the married couple. She is beautiful and elegant, and clearly you see how he could be inspired to write songs for her/about her/because of her. How lovely it is that such a powerful woman inspired songs that are enjoyed by millions of people.

Another greatness of the movie is the Cole Porter songs that play throughout. His music as sung by modern artists is penetrating, and tells their own part of the story.

John Ford had a big emotional investment in The Wings of Eagles, and his favorite star John Wayne rewarded the director with one of his strongest performances. The subject is Frank "Spig" Wead, Naval aviation legend turned Hollywood screenwriter, who had written Ford's very good 1932 movie Air Mail and his magnificent WWII elegy They Were Expendable (1945). On the latter, Ford made the extraordinary gesture of putting Wead's screenplay credit on the same main-title panel as his own.

Ford was fond of exploring the theme of "victory in defeat." Wead's life was made to order for that. The hell-raising flyboy shenanigans, and his flailing marriage to a scrappy Irish redhead (The Quiet Man's Maureen O'Hara reporting for duty), were abruptly curtailed by a fall that left him with severe spinal damage. He should never have been able to walk again, but he fought his way back to limited mobility and built a new career as a writer. And when WWII broke out, Wead talked his way into uniform once more and made a key contribution to the Pacific air war.

It would be satisfying to report that The Wings of Eagles is a triumph--that the broad comedy of the early reels cuts brilliantly against the raw pain of the Weads' marriage, the grief of a family broken and mended and broken again, the film's specters of death and deep frustration. There are powerful moments--especially the complex, scalding scene of the newly injured Spig dismissing Min (O'Hara) from his life. But the low comedy is very low, the visual style sometimes stark but more often just drab, and the screenplay is very choppy about the passage of time. Ford-Wayne pal Ward Bond turns up as a crusty movie director with a walking stick full of booze, an office full of Western memorabilia, and the nudge-nudge moniker "John Dodge." --Richard T. Jameson

    Description

Cmdr. Frank "Spig" Wead was a pioneer aviator, renowned screenwriter (whose works included John Ford's They Were Expendable) and a man of war. The skies beckoned Spig to action; a crippling injury ultimately left him powerless to act, propelling him to discover the power of his pen. He was talented, driven, flawed, a friend of Ford and the subject of this compassionate biography. John Wayne plays Spig and Ford directs The Wings of Eagles, which also offers a fascinating glimpse into the ways and world of Ford: Ward Bond plays moviemaker John Dodge, a role modelled on Ford. Maureen O'Hara, Wayne's five-time co-star (including Ford's The Quiet Man), and Dan Dailey (of Ford's 1952 What Price Glory?) play Spig's indomitable wife Min and cigar-chomping sidekick "Jughead" Carson.

5 out of 5 stars The Wings of Eagles.......2007-09-08

This is a great war movie and I enjoyed it very much also a great acting job by John Wayne, Dan Dailey and Maureen O'Hara and a great supporting cast. They were even funny sometimes.

    2 out of 5 stars John Wayne.......2007-03-24

This movie was all about the military character John Wayne was portraying. Not so much about airplanes. I was disappointed there were not more airplanes. It's all about Army vs. Navy, I did not relate to it too well.

4 out of 5 stars A sentimental movie where Ford gives a special warmth to a friend..........2007-01-17

Maureen O'Hara is teamed with a very inferior part in "The Wings of Eagles," a moving tribute based on a true story...

As Wayne's neglected, temperamental wife, she finds her dedicated husband frequently spending most of his time and energy on improving the status of Navy aviation...

On the night, Wayne is appointed skipper of a fighter squadron, he falls down a flight of stairs and suffers back injuries that render him a cripple...

Determined to fight his way back to some kind of independence, he persuades his wife to leave him and live her own life with their two daughters...

Nursed back to health by his sidekick (Dan Dailey--largely instrumental in motivating him in physical rehabilitation) he begins a new civilian career as a successful Hollywood writer...

Just when Wayne and Maureen, now a successful businesswoman, plan a reconciliation, news is broadcast of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor...

Maureen is last seen having another test of Irish temper as she heaves her half-packed suitcase across the room, frustrated that she again has lost her husband to the Navy...

Despite his handicap, Wayne is sent to the Pacific theater of war to supervise his revolutionary jeep-carrier tactical system...

The film is filled with humor: Wayne's plane landing in the swimming pool strike in the middle of the admiral's out-door tea party; the clubroom fight and cake throwing; the assorted cast members falling into the pool... It is also filled with deep drama and heartbreaking tragedy: the tender kiss of a wife deeply in love on the head of a man in pain; Wayne learning to walk again; the shipmates on deck in full military ceremony to say goodbye to a decorated flying ace...

Ford gives a special warmth to a friend, considered a national hero...

Based on a true story and Winner of Best Feature Film at Toronto Film Festival and Gen Art Film Festival, Paul Kaye (Best Actor, U.S. Comedy Arts Festival) stars as Frankie Wilde, the legendary British DJ and musical mastermind of the underground club scene whose career is cut down at its pinnacle by unthinkable tragedy - the loss of his hearing. Darkly funny and inspirational, with fierce performances by both Kaye and Kate Magowan ("24 Hour Party People"), as his sex-crazed Mrs.,you'll laugh and gasp but cheer him on as he struggles out of the abyss to reclaim his life and reputation.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-09-10

Excellent movie, especially if you are in the clubbing/rave scene. The soundtrack is amazing, Paul Kaye's acting is flawless. Great movie, try to make your grandma like it! Sex, Drugs and Electronic music... What can I say, tripping!

    4 out of 5 stars REQUIEM FOR A SONG.......2007-05-21

IT'S ALL GONE PETE TONG is an absolute stunner. The central character has varied interests, substantial amount of money to blow on women, family, alcohol and drugs. He is at his best when he is the center of attention; scenes in the film make you want to cheer him. There is one seen in the film which is almost the MOST disturbing 2 minutes I have seen in a long time. This movie is what you and I wait for all year. My favourite scene in the film involves the central character (F.W) and the time he discovers his own worthlessness without ears. Massively inspiring. The kind of film one quotes. Amazing cause it has an Aviator like charm to offset your heart in it's own profound yet not so humble discourse.

    5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2007-03-10

    Guys,
this movie wasn't exported to Italy but I watched it on the flight Milan - Miami...it was incredible! I bought it on Amazon because the feeling of the Dj deaf playing and hearing the music with the human contact of the foots, with a Mac exploding the audio waves, has no words to be described!

5 out of 5 stars Instantly into my "top 10" all time!.......2006-11-05

It's All Gone Pete Tong is excellent from first to last scene. Paul Kaye is amazing. It's a movie that should be seen multpile times- it gets better and better. Besides just having a great story line and premise, the direction is great, the use of music and sound creates lasting emotion. The way they edit the sound to toggle between Frank's deafness and what is just normally happening from scene to scene is so well done that you'd have to concentrate on how they do it to understand it, because it flows so seemlessly and naturally to let the viewer feel what he's going through. This movie is funny, dramatic, original and so well made in every aspect that I would recommend it to everyone. Own this movie and pass it on- people will thank you.

5 out of 5 stars What could be more IRONIC than a deaf DJ?.......2006-10-06

Consumers love IRONY! I can sum up this film in one sentence: DJing, drugs, hummus and sex...silence...newfound appreciation for life. What makes this film great is not the fact that Frankie Wilde does drugs, rather, its HOW he does drugs (see it and you'll understand what I mean). Same thing with his DJing. The fact that he DJs is well-and-good, but you have to see HOW he DJs (pre- and post-deaf). Frankie is a special character and Paul Kaye nails this role (as he says in the DVD extras, "God, I've waited a long time for this job."). Speaking of DVD extras...WATCH THEM. Frankie the spokesmodel for Oman Whiskey, Frankie on a cooking show, Frankie on an interview with a news anchor, Frankie's Rabbi (played by Paul Kaye), among other gimmicks...classic. In regards to credentials...WINNER GEN ART FILM FESTIVAL, WINNER U.S. COMEDY ARTS FESTIVAL, WINNER TORONTO FILM FESTIVAL. And the soundtrack...exceptional club music. Particularly, Reflekt's "Need to Feel Loved" (Seb Fontaine & Jay P Remix). I guarantee you will RE-WATCH this film over and over again. Maybe you'll even take a step back and have a look at your own life?

Note: THIS FILM IS A WORK OF FICTION. IT IS A "MOCK"UMENTARY. DON'T BE FOOLED. The fact that the directors and actors deliver such a compelling final product, where consumers actually believe it is real, is testament alone that this film is a keeper.

Though Queen Latifah is less known for her dramatic skills, films such as Life Support drive home the point that this singer turned actress has the chops to build a serious career in movies. Thanks to her work on the sitcom Living Single, everyone knows that she's funny. And musicals such as Chicago and Hairspray prove that her singing talent extends far further than rap. Here, Latifah captivates the audience with her understated performance. Based on the true-life story of writer-director Nelson George's HIV-positive sister, Andrea Williams, Life Support stars Latifah as Ana, a recovering junkie who tries to atone for her seedy past by being a loving mom to her 9-year-old daughter. In addition, she takes care of her husband, who also has HIV. But Life Support, an AIDS awareness facility that is an integral part of her life, is where Ana feels most at home. As the movie unfolds, we see how far Ana has come from her rocky beginnings, and how much more she has to accomplish before she can repair the damage from her past. One that seems irreparable is the sticky relationship she has with her estranged teenage daughter, who lives with Ana's mother (wonderfully played by Anna Deavere Smith). While there are some moments in the film that are overly maudlin, giving it more of a Movie of the Week feel than that of a feature film, Latifah's deft touch--as well as superb acting by the supporting cast--make Ana someone we all would like to help, yet are wary of befriending. --Jae-Ha Kim

I celebrate this sistah yes. She's not afraid of taking on diverse, challenging roles. Set it off should have received all kinds of awards. But maybe it was a movie before "Hollywood's" time (lol) Set it off was so real to me. And the queen was very convincing as "Cleo" I can't wait to see life support. And I wish the aids and dl subject could be adressed tastefully and differently. Hopefully this movie is on the way to making progress happen

    You do that queen !

5 out of 5 stars Life Support is a triumph on all accounts.......2007-08-06

With the release of Life Support, officially selected in the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, HBO Films further establishes itself as the go-to location for powerful actors looking for solid, unflowery, unapologetically good films. Following in the tradition of Geoffrey Rush and Charlize Theron in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers and Annette Bening and Ben Kingsley in Mrs. Harris, Queen Latifah has become a part of the tradition of excellence with her turn as HIV positive AIDS activist Ana Wallace.

In the deeply personal and profoundly moving film based on the life of writer/director George Nelson's sister Andrea Williams, Queen Latifah not only has the opportunity to help explore the effect of the HIV/AIDS crisis on the African-American community, but to display her tremendous acting talent along the way. As Ana Wallace, Latifah has never been more human, more endearing, or more inspiring. Equal parts stubborn selfishness and selfless activist, Latifah portrays Wallace (and the real-life Williams, who makes an appearance in the film herself) as a real woman with real problems, who learns to rise above it all in order to help herself and her family.

Using real people in key group discussion scenes, Nelson gives his film an almost documentary feel, and the strong performances from Anna Deavere Smith as Wallace's stern but loving mother, Wendell Pierce as her supportive and honest husband, and Rachel Nicks as her estranged daughter make the screen crackle with emotion and energy. Darrin Dewitt Henson (of Darrin's Dance Grooves) even steps in for a surprisingly powerful turn as a hotheaded record producer. Throughout the film, no actor misses a beat. Either the casting director should be thanked profusely for such ideal casting, or Nelson just has a special knack for getting exactly the right performance out of each of his actors.

The acting is phenomenal, the story is moving and engaging, and the backdrop of the Brooklyn streets never fails to deliver. In short, Life Support is a triumph on all accounts. Latifah will doubtless be looking at some nominations for this role and perhaps she'll begin to be offered the kind of roles her talent truly deserves. In George Nelson's video diary (included on the disc), viewers can clearly see his mood and feelings towards the film changing and growing as the film progresses and each scene is captured on film. Audiences will feel much the same way as they watch the film head towards its dramatic and poignant conclusion.

    5 out of 5 stars really amazing.......2007-07-23

Queen Latifah deserves an award for her performance in Life Support. The movie deals with everyday normal people who have to learn to live with a bad disease, and try to make the best of a bad situation. I was really feeling for the characters the entire time because the storyline was written so carefully, and with a lot of twists and turns that kept a consistent flow. You'll be watching this film thinking about the storyline and wanting to help sick people anyway you can. A film worth watching for sure.

5 out of 5 stars A Genuinely Fine and Fresh Look at an Ongoing Problem.......2007-05-30

Once again HBO has produced a film for television that will doubtless be a success not only in its televised version but on theater release and/or DVD. LIFE SUPPORT as written by Nelson George, Hannah Weyer and Jim McKay and directed with power and restraint by Nelson George has the courage to delve deeply into the problem of AIDS in the black community and the result is a film that is not only informative but also a story of tremendous power about the sequelae of HIV infection on the lives of those infected and their families.

Based on the true story of a mother who as a crack cocaine addict became infected by her boyfriend's indiscriminate use of a shared needle and with the discovery of her sero-positive status turned her life around to become a powerful positive role model and AIDS activist in the black community. Ana Willis (Queen Latifah in a sterling performance) is married to Slick (Wendell Pierce), both of whom are HIV positive and both work, living with their young daughter Kim (Ravelle Parker) and trying to cope with their estranged daughter Kelly (Rachel Nicks, a true find of a young artist!) who elects to live with her grandmother, Ana's beleagured mother (Anna Deavere Smith, once again proving she is one of the premiere actors of the day). Kelly and Ana are at odds and their strained relationship is one of the evidences of the cruelties of the aftermath of ex-addicts manner of going straight. Kelly's closest friend is Omari (Evan Ross, gifted actor son of Diana Ross!) who is gay and is very ill with AIDS. Kelly asks for Ana's help when Omari disappears and it is through this act that the story plunges forward into the self help groups of AIDS patients Ana chairs, Ana's visit to Omari's boyfriends such as MJ (Darrin Dewitt Henson) who is very much on the down low, and Ana's ultimate finding herself as a mother, a wife, a caregiver and a fine activist in doing her part to prevent the spread of the dread disease form which she suffers.

The large cast is excellent with outstanding performances by Queen Latifah, Anna Deavere Smith, and Rachel Nicks and strong work by Evan Ross, Tracee Ellis Ross (another of Diana Ross' progeny) et al. The beauty of the film is the avoidance of grandstanding and overacting: the message is driven home quietly and with respect. It is a fine film that should be seen by everyone. Grady Harp, May 07
