5 out of 5 stars Be Careful when Samson Runs Free & More Careful yet when He is in Chains! .......2007-07-06

The '50 was the "Sword & Sandal Movies" decade. Uncountable films of the genre were released. The most notable: "The Ten Commandments" (1956) and "The Robe" (1958). Also in a very good supporting second line "The Egyptian" (1954), "Land of Pharaohs" (1955) and "Helen of Troy" (1956).
"Samson & Delilah" (1949) was nearer to the first group than the second.

A renowned specialist as Cecil B. DeMille was summoned to direct this movie.
He had a solid and successful experience in the genre, from first "Ten Commandments" (1923) version (he was responsible also for 1956's version) thru "The King of Kings" (1927) till "Cleopatra" (1934) and "The Crusades" (1935), he directed one blockbuster after other.

The script is based on the Biblical tale of Samson. This Hercules-like hero appeared among the Jews when they were oppressed by the Philistines.
The film depicts him as a rather naïve peasant in love with a Philistine girl. In order to gain her hand he kill barehanded a lion and won the prize.
Unfortunately for everyone a conjunction of mishap transform his wedding day in a bloody tragedy.
Delilah, his would-be sister-in-law swears revenge. She will not stop until poor Samson is rendered powerless and delivered into his enemies' hands.

The movie is outstanding in several categories: Costumes and Set Decoration both won the Oscar; Cinematography, Special Effects and Music Scoring were nominated. Remember that in those days the Oscar Award was an undisputed Major Award.

As for the performing, Victor Mature had the perfect physique-du-role and he will profit from it in following years starring and co-starring "The Robe" (1953) and "Demetrius & the Gladiators" (1954) amongst other films.
Hedy Lamarr was a gorgeous vamp as Delilah and played the seducer's role perfectly.

For me there are two unforgettable scenes: one Samson defeating an entire Philistine army armed only with an ass' jaw bone; the other the Hero smashing the temple.

It is a very good Ancient History related film.

5 out of 5 stars Lamarr's beauty took audience's breath away..........2007-01-13

Hedy Lamarr took the title role of Delilah and made it her own... She was full and sparkling as the Philistine temptress, the central figure of Samson's last love story, dark and troubled when she took advantage of Samson's confidence to betray him to his enemies, repent and full of love when she sees him blinded and disgraced... Her name has since become synonymous with a voluptuous treacherous woman...

Victor Mature was a mighty, troubled Samson, beset by conflicting emotions, totally dominated by a pagan woman... He teases with her, perhaps showing some smarts here for a change... He falls victim to his enemies through the love of Delilah, a sophisticated beauty with innate elegance, who beguiles him into revealing the secret of his strength... His performance was always up to the standard of Lamarr... Together, they acted with wonderful passion and were as convincing dramatically as long-suffering Hebrews as they were Philistines drunk with victory...

George Sanders, whose dignified presence was a perfect match for the Saran of Gaza, admires Samson for his strength, and envies him for the love of his people... He persuades Delilah to find out what is the source of Samson's strength so they can destroy him...

"Samson and Delilah' is a film of emotion, of love, and action... It is at once a wonderful, and rich historical look at an ancient era, an excuse for beautiful and passionate music, and a thrilling climax hardly rivaled in its size and lavishness... The film is wonderful to look at, and the music is terrific...

Look for Russ Tamblyn playing the little shepherd Saul...

In searching for this movie I found there are two DVD products available along with a VHS version. There were complaints about the video/audio quality on the other DVD and VHS versions, so I bought this one. This DVD is also produced in China like the other version, but I have no complaints about the video or audio quality. According to the box: "For this new edition a 35mm interpositive was made from the original 3-strip Technicolor nitrate negative, and digitally transfered. The soundtrack has been transfered from the 35mm optical positive protection master.".
My only complaint is that it is not in wide screen format.
Because it is a product of China the subtitles are in Chinese and it doesn't have the usual top menu system. You pop the DVD in and the movie begins playing. There are no special features except at the end of the movie you can watch the theatrical trailers for two other DeMille classics.
I won't waste time reviewing the plot or actor's performances - there are already some great reviews containing that information on the other versions available here, which I would only be duplicating.
I recommend you read the reviews of the other DVD and VHS version, then play it safe and buy THIS one because of the poor quality reports on the others.

Description

Samson is a simple shepherd with the strength of a titan and the destiny to fight the Philistines and General Tariq. Delilah is a Philistine beauty, torn between her love for the shepherd and loyalty to her people. As told in the Old Testament, Samson's betrayal by Delilah left him in slavery. But Samson's epic revenge vanquished his Philistine foes and made him one of the greatest heroes of the Bible. Samson and Delilah is the powerful tale of a deception that brought down an empire... and sealed their names in eternity.

4 out of 5 stars Bringing The Bible To Life.......2007-05-12

The movie Samson and Delilah was very well done. In this film it shows
that our hero Samson has doubts about his chosen path. That is a feeling every human being can relate too. He goes to the school of hard knocks, and everything works out the way it is suppose to in the end.

4 out of 5 stars Better than Average Biblical Drama.......2007-04-18

TNT produced a wonderful series of Old Testament dramas. All are good but some are better than others. This one falls somewhere in the middle.

Samson is a child gifted with superhuman strength. He is an Israelite and his people are under the thumb of the Philistines. He is God's chosen instrument for deliverance.

He would seem a strange choice. He is not exactly a pious individual. He is fairly faithful to his vows but sees nothing wrong with having a good time. This is especially true when having a good time involves a beautiful girl of the Philistines. Over time, he lets the treacherous beauty in on his secret and the result is terrible. He is deprived of that which makes him great to begin with and winds ups as a blinded slave.

The redeeming quality of the story is God's ability to take an imperfect individual and use him for great purposes. Nobody is beyond the pale. That is the central message and it is well done.

On the minus side, there are some non scriptural elements. This is to be expected for a long production of a fairly short biblical story. In my mind, these do not detract from the centrality of the message. Some of the acting is a bit underwhelming but it is by no means bad. All in all, this is a good show.

Not Very Good Acting. Actually The Acting Is Horrible. And The Movie Itself Strays From Scripture. The Cover Looks Great. But, Don't Let It Fool You. Like I Did. Bummer

2 out of 5 stars Overdrawn and innacurate.......2006-07-06

A big mistake to make this movie three hours long. There is certainly not enough details in scripture to warrant such a decision. Therefore there were many made up scenes and long, painful conversations that have no scriptural basis. Had it been shorter and stuck to the point this might have been saved but otherwise its just too much of a narrative to be considered seriously.

3 out of 5 stars Great Actors, Costumes, Scenery; but Strays Too Much From Scripture.......2005-11-21

SAMSON AND DELILAH is 3 hours long! It has three great lead actors and a famous director, but it is greatly weakened by too much fictionalized filling-in around what the Bible says about the story.

The first two hours are pretty slow, with half of it being embellishments to try to make the Scriptural details seem logical and rational to modern viewers. This is a good idea, but they leave out half of the Bible details, while trying to make plausible the half of Scripture that they do cover. They create many non-Biblical characters who help develop the history of the Israel/Philistine conflict, but I don't think it's worth the screen time that they use up, and it definitely isn't worth leaving out Bible details to make room for the fictional characters and back story.

They hired Dennis Hopper for the film, but they had to create a fictional character for him to play, the Philistine General Tariq, and then they spend too much time developing Hopper's character and the fictional details that MIGHT have been going on with the bad guys. In the meantime, they don't cover all of the details in the short story from the actual Bible. They do a good job with the non-Biblical story, but it makes the first 2 hours of the movie kind of drag along.

The last hour of the movie almost redeems the entire movie, as this is where a lot of the overly extensive character development finally cashes in. Unfortunately, though the last hour is emotional and logically put together, it is not really Scripturally accurate. We end up seeing what the filmmakers wrote, not necessarily what God wrote in the Bible.

Early in the film, one blunder was not covering all of the angel telling Samson's parents about their unlikely son to be born to them. They show the wife being told, but then cut out the husband, Manoah, praying for the angel to return for more information, and them eating together when the angel disappears into the smoke. This would have been a fairly inexpensive scene, and it would have helped out the percentage of actual Bible content, but it did not make it into the movie. I guess their special effects budget may have been too low for the disappearance into the smoke, but it would have been easy to do all the rest of that Bible passage. They already had all of the actors on the set for it, but did not get it into the movie.

They took many verses from the Samson Bible story, but shifted the chronology and smaller details around. It is not too badly done, but would have been so much stronger if they had stuck to Biblical accuracy.

They show Samson fighting the lion, but doing it to save Delilah. Samson fights Philistines with a jawbone, but only a few dozen, not 1,000 as the Bible says he did. They show Samson setting the fields afire, but not with foxes tied together at the tails. They allude to Samson carrying the city gate away, but don't show it onscreen.

They named the movie SAMSON AND DELILAH, but they actually end up with little onscreen time showing the two together, which surprised me.

SAMSON AND DELILAH might be too mature for children, as it shows Samson hooking up with a harlot, and in bed with Delilah. There is no nudity, but their bodies are humping and bumping together, and small kids might ask what the characters are doing. If a child is too young for the birds and the bees, then you should definitely skip this movie.

If you are really into Bible movies, then you may enjoy this one. But I don't recommend using it to try to witness to people who aren't already confirmed believers. It is too slow for anybody with only a casual interest in the subject matter.

This is part of a line of made-for-TV Bible movies from the 1990's, from LUBE Productions, an Italian company making films for English speaking audiences. SAMSON AND DELILAH is one of the weaker films in the series, though it is still not too bad, if you are really curious to see it. The best ones in the series are ESTHER, SOLOMON and JEREMIAH. Those three have been out for years on DVD, and are a better bargain if purchased together in THE BIBLE SERIES BOX SET. It has only been in 2005 that the rest of the series became available on DVD, though they have been available on VHS all along. The production values are very good in all the films, though they are sometimes weak in the area of supernatural events onscreen, probably due to the expense of special effects.

I would recommend the DVDs of JEREMIAH, ESTHER, SOLOMON, JACOB or JOSEPH ahead of SAMSON AND DELILAH, if Bible accuracy is what you are looking for. But fans of Dennis Hopper and Elizabeth Hurley will enjoy SAMSON AND DELILAH because these two actors do a good job and get a decent amount of screen time.

2 out of 5 stars A sad compromise........2005-11-19

This is a very, very strange rendering of the famous Bible story. Can't say I'm really a fan of the vindictive, punishing, and violent Old Testament God, but whatever you think of the philosophy, you've got to admit the stories from the book of Numbers are quite compelling and dramatic. Why bother doing them, if you're not going to exploit the anger, vengeance, and sensuality inherent in the original pieces? DeMille's film, for all its gaudy eroticism and ham-fisted spectacle, at least honored the sensibilities and the grandeur of this story of sex and revenge. This version was so watered down that the climax (poorly rendered and badly drawn) had no impact. Clumsy animation (which looks not at all like the image on the box) and ill-conceived musical numbers practically sink this kid-friendly version of a powerful story. Too bad the filmmakers didn't trust their young audiences enough to know that children are capable of assimilating frightening imagery and messages: even "The Wizard of Oz" had some intense and disturbing scenes. This story could have used some. Charlton Heston's live action intro seems superfluous and bothersome. For a successful animated rendering of these Bible stories, I'd reccommend "The Prince of Egypt" or "Joseph, King of Dreams". They're great examples of how this kind of thing can (and should) be done. This was a sadly wasted opportunity, and it's especially discouraging because this sweeping Biblical story was so well suited to the exaggerations and flourishes of the cartoon medium. Alas.

SAMSON AND DELILAH - 1949 - (VICTOR MATURE) - Everyone is familiar with the Old Testament Bible story of the mighty Samson and the treacherous Delilah, and how the strongman was robbed of his powers once the biblical femme fatale sheared off his locks. This 1949 version is retold in splashy Cecil B. DeMille style, with Technicolor that practically jumps off the screen and larger-than-life portrayals all around. The gorgeous Hedy Lamarr plays the vindictive Delilah to Victor Mature's Samson. Mature uses his expressive features to full advantage, melting hearts as the vulnerable Samson sans curls. TEN COMMANDMENTS - 1956 - (CHARLTON HESTON) - Legendary silent film director Cecil B. DeMille didn't much alter the way he made movies after sound came in, and this 1956 biblical drama is proof of that. While graced with such 1950s niceties as VistaVision and Technicolor, The Ten Commandments (DeMille had already filmed an earlier version in 1923) has an anachronistic, impassioned style that finds lead actors Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner expressively posing while hundreds of extras writhe either in the presence of God's power or from orgiastic heat. DeMille, as always, plays both sides of the fence as far as sin goes, surrounding Heston's Moses with worshipful music and heavenly special effects while also making the sexy action around the cult of the Golden Calf look like fun. You have to see The Ten Commandments to understand its peculiar resonance as an old-new movie, complete with several still-impressive effects such as the parting of the Red Sea. --Tom Keogh * NOTE: THESE SPECIAL EDITION IMPORT DVDS FEATURE: 1. 3 out of 5 stars Not a strong production.......2005-11-04

The story of Samson and Delilah is one of the better known stories from the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. It seems strange, therefore, that films almost always get the story wrong.

This 1984 version of the Samson and Delilah story gives Max von Sydow, the governor of Philistine Gaza, the top billing, because the stars playing the title roles were not as well known. Belinda Bauer portrays Delilah in a sultry but somewhat flattened role, and Antony Hamilton is 'introduced' as a new star, despite having made appearances prior to this production. Belinda Bauer is considered an American actress, despite being born in Australia; Antony Hamilton is considered an Australian actor, despite being born in Britain. The desert lands of the setting for this film are definitely not Gaza nor the northern end of Israel/Palestine, so in many ways things are very mixed up. One does want to give a willing suspension of disbelief in any theatrical or cinematic release, but sometimes the small items add up to too much, if there isn't substance elsewhere to carry the film.

Hamilton, Bauer and von Sydow give tolerable performances, perhaps edging even toward good. However, the script is stilted and lacking in depth - whenever there seems to be a point of principle or 'meaningful' moment, it becomes a bit more like an item of kitsch. Each of the three main actors have turned in much better performances in other productions that one knows there is skill there, particularly with von Sydow, but it is lost in this production. Jose Ferrer, another veteran actor, has a slightly-more-than-cameo appearance, but is generally wasted as a pontificating priest without much depth. The script was written by John Gay (prolific television/teleplay script writer), based on a novel 'The Husband of Delilah' by Eric Linkletter. This departs considerably from the biblical text, and unfortunately not in ways that would give new meaning or added meaning to the story.

Perhaps director Lee Philips (also known for television direction in series such as 'Dynasty' and the film 'Hardhats and Legs') was hoping that the occasional display of beautiful bodies would distract the viewer from noticing the overall lack of substance. Both Bauer and Hamilton have sex appeal, but even here it tends to be wasted by second-rate camera angles and lighting, quick edits and cheesy music that made this a B-film even when first released.

The fight sequences between Samson and the lion, Samson and the Philistine garrison, and Samson and the Philistine army are poorly choreographed (the fake lion edited in with the real lion in portions looked obviously fake, as if someone borrowed a child's toy lion as the prop). The final Temple-crushing scene is tolerable, but even then the architectural detail is wrong - it was very clear the Temple did not rest upon the columns Samson pushed over, and the camera maneuvering to get Sidka, the Philistine governor, to be positioned under the falling idol was very poorly done.

I was astonished to learn that this production had an Emmy nomination, and of all categories for Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling (Jan Van Uchelen). Perhaps this was for Delilah's hairstyles, which are okay, but as Samson's legendary strength is tied to his hair, I found myself thinking all through the film, 'He has terrible hair!' Hamilton's good looks were generally lessened by having a bad-hair day all through film; it was only when it was cut at the end that he began to look reasonable.

I was also astonished to learn that the composer of original music for this piece was Maurice Jarre, who wrote the music for 'A Passage to India', 'Ghost', 'A Walk in the Clouds' and 'The Year of Living Dangerously', films that I love, and from which the music is memorable. This sounded like 50s or 60s retreads from other B-films, sadly failing to augment the story or the setting.

Perhaps the most detrimental part of this show was the cameo by Victor Mature, who played one of the more memorable Samsons in film history, opposite Hedy Lamar, directed by Cecil B. DeMille. Even that film was a B-film, albeit a good B-film from an era in Hollywood when such biblical epics and pseudo-epics were written to a generally appreciated formula. Mature plays the father of Samson here, Manoah, but gives such a sad performance here I didn't recognise him, even though I knew he had a role in the film before I put the disc in to view! Perhaps it proves the point Mature made once, when applying for membership to a country club that didn't accept actors as members, 'I'm not an actor - and I've got 67 films to prove it!'

This film apparently was also nominated by BAFTA for best short film, and I cannot but wonder what was lacking in short films that year that this production would get such a nod.

If you're interested in the Samson story, this will not be a film to give new insights. If you're interested in seeing Antony Hamilton or Belinda Bauer in various states of undress, even then this film will disappoint, as there aren't many good scenes for that, either. I'm truly surprised this wasn't an Alan Smithee production. I really wanted to like this film, as Hamilton made so few productions before his untimely death, and in general I tend to like biblical epics, von Sydow films, and several of actors here. But alas, it was not to be.

    Watch at your own risk.

Three classic movies in one DVD collection: Solomon & Sheba, Samson & Delilah, and Sodom & Gomorrah. SOLOMON & SHEBA - Yul Brynner .... Solomon, Gina Lollobrigida .... Sheba. From his ascension to the throne at age 12 to the beautiful queen who finally won his heart, this is a richly detailed look at one of the towering figures of the Bible. A clash between King Solomon and his brother is further complicated when the Queen of Sheba seduces Solomon in an attempt to bring about Israel's downfall... In this glorious biblical epic, director King Vidor cinematically explores the evils of the flesh and pagan worship. SAMSON & DELILAH - Victor Mature, Hedy Lamarr, The glorious epic style of Cecil B. DeMille (Ten Commandments) is exemplified in this story of the Bibles legendary strongman and the woman who betrays him. Victor Mature is the classic Samson, muscular and fearless, and Hedy Lamarr is Delilah, the irresistible lady with the scissors. The action is captivating and of magnificent proportions, and the enormous cast and the splendor of the production add to the spectacle. SODOM & GOMORRAH - Stewart Granger, Pier Angeli. Sin, torture and betrayal in Biblical Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot, leader of the Hebrews, believes his people can co-exist with the Sodomites, a disastrous decision. Note: This movie does stray from the factual events noted in the Bible and is not considered to be 100% acurate.

5 out of 5 stars One of best movie made!.......2007-04-06

It is rare to in these days to get a movie which the characters play they role in such fascinating and entertaining way as this old movie. It is one of my childhood favorites.

2 out of 5 stars Paramount release much inferior to Boying release from China.......2007-02-21

I've had the Paramount release of this epic for a couple of years now, and was rather disappointed at the pale colors and overall sort of blurry rendition.
When I was given a new imported release from the Boying company, it was everything the Paramount release should have been. Brilliant color, clear picture, and with bright white, good size subtitles, very easy to read.

It is a great pleasure for me to be able to enjoy this spectacular movie in all its spendor. I only wish it were wide screen (it is Full Screen), but I'm happy to be able to see it as it was made to be seen.

3 out of 5 stars Samson and Delilah (1949).......2007-01-15

Bought this movie from biblemovies.com and found that the sound quality was very poor and the color quality compared to a copied version on VHS was not up to par. But when I purchased my new plasma HD TV and Sony PS3 system I loaded this DVD in and the results were outstanding. I found out that the PS3 can upconvert regular and even poor DVD quality to great color and sound. The image sharpness was not equal to a digitally remastered movie but the movie went back up on my best DVD movie collection. As long as it's played on PS3. I still want Paramount to give this movie an upgrade to the DVD format. I would buy it for what ever the price. I'm going online to Paramount.com and try to get an answer.

      1 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2006-04-23

I was very disappointed when I opened up my newly received DVD of Samson and Delilah thinking that it would be in the rich beautiful color that the original movie was in. Boy was I disappointed. The color was very faint plus I was surprised to see that it has Chinese subtitles. If I knew that it was made in China I would have never purchased the movie. The quality if very poor and fuzzy. I will never order another movie from this distributor again. I feel this was a waste of my money. I will now have to find another distributor who has a copy of this movie that I can buy that is not a Chinese copy, that is an American made copy and of better quality. Buyers beware of this distributor. I believe all their movies are Chinese quality.

5 out of 5 stars "Your kiss is the sting of death.".......2006-01-21

Cecil B. DeMille created one of the most entertaining Bible epics of all time when he directed "Samson and Delilah". The lavish sets and colorful costumes are simply wonderful and the cast is filled with well-known stars, like Victor Mature, Hedy Lamarr, George Sanders and Angela Lansbury. The movie won oscars for art direction/set decoration and costumes, but as usual the cast of a Biblical epic was ignored by the Academy Awards. Since nearly everyone's heard the Old Testament story of Samson and Delilah, I'll include only a very brief summary of the movie.

Victor Mature stars as Samson, a respected and feared Hebrew leader who is seduced by the Philistine femme fatale Delilah, unforgettably played by the sexy Hedy Lamarr. Samson fears no man because God has blessed him with amazing strength, and he kills many of his foes. When Delilah fears that Samson will leave her, she betrays him to the local Philistine ruler (George Sanders) after learning the secret of Samson's extraordinary strength lies in his long hair, which she promptly cuts. Now reduced to a blind slave, Samson asks God for forgiveness and his strength back. God gives him his strength back, and Samson delivers one final, devastating blow to the Philistines.

"Samson and Delilah" is one of my favorite stories from the Bible and although DeMille changed some of the facts of the story it still remains a very entertaining classic. For the totally accurate version of the story read Judges 13-16 in the Old Testament. Hedy Lamarr and Victor Mature were superb and their chemistry was electric. I hope we don't have to wait much longer before this great epic is fully restored and released on a special edition dvd. Be aware that the five star rating is for the movie itself, not the poor quality import DVD. With special editions available of "The Ten Commandments", "Ben Hur", and countless other Biblical epics, why is it that this classic hasn't gotten the same treatment?
