Absolution for Burton!.......2007-05-08
I saw this film 20 or so years ago on VHS. Then as now, this stands as a really good suspence film. The writing and characters are wonderfully wrought through a chilling story of revenge and deciept in the pulpit. One of Richard Burton's most hidden and fine performances in the later of his career, this movie will keep you watching. You can read the plot synopsis yourself, but the film it'self is definately worth the pennies you can purchase it for. Whether a Burton fan or simply a mystery/suspense buff, you can't go wrong here. Sit back and enjoy.
Wow! Intriguing...........2006-05-05
Burton does a great job in this movie, and the film really keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. It is very intense, and there are a lot of surprises. This is categorized as a psychological thriller--in reality it is perhaps a "psychotic" thriller!
There is a slight lack of credibility at the end, but this is definitely worth the watch!
Last Rites..........2006-04-30
Richard Burton is a priest at a catholic school for boys. One day during latin class he tells the boys about the sanctity of confession, and that the priest who hears it is bound to not reveal the confession to anyone. This is true even if the confessor has committed murder. Well, this puts ideas into the heads of some of the lads, who set out to use this information against the priest himself. False confessions are made, as well as a confession of murder! Burton's character is sent into turmoil trying to get to the bottom of things. He's made a fool of and also gets drawn into a dark plot to destroy him. ABSOLUTION has many twists and creepy moments. I was surprised at how good it turned out to be. I was expecting some dumb religious movie! Track this one down...
Description
An angel descends to Earth intending to learn what it's like to live as a human being. While on Earth, this spirit becomes involved in terrorism, drug deals, and pornography. Chemicals used in a new super-bomb are to be melted down in VHS tape shells and secretly shipped out of the U.S. as part of a porn film deal. Overseas, the porno tapes will be melted down again so that the chemicals can be extracted and used for mass destruction. The angel wants to stop these evils, though it is the law of the angels not to interfere in human history. The angel jumps from one human host to another, sinking deeper and deeper into the nightmare, becoming more involved. The angel begins to feel the darkest of human emotions: fear . . . anger . . . hate . . . and it all leads to bloodshed, depravity, and intense violence.

Cool independent feature!.......2005-07-13
John Specht (INSANIAC) brings you into an underground world of hired guns and conspiracy theory, told through the eyes of an apostate angel trying to rid the world of these "bad" people. As an independent moviemaker, Specht utilizes all of his assets to help bring this many-faceted story to life. The acting ranges from good to mediocre, but none of it detracts from the excitement. Paul Wendell's portrayal of Dimitri stands out in this movie as one of the better performances. I recommend checking this movie out.

to all our BURTON fans:.......2002-12-14
Even as a 7 year old kid whenever I 'heard' my father play a Richard Burton film I knew it was him. His voice always got me before his acting did.
I remember seeing 'Absolution' in my early teen years. I wanna see it again to understand what I could not. But more, why it had got me (?) Was it the suspense with a dark gothic look? Today it stands to be a cult movie, so to speak, (that goes for the movie '1984' too). I believe being told 'Absolution' was banned upon theatrical release in the UK. If it is not true it did do the trick for a young teen kid curious not only to see a R rated movie but a banned one too! But I do know as a suspense, this was good! Richard did give a powerful performance. Then again if you are a Richard Burton fan you smile to be proud of him, even though the Academy awards treated him fine but the Oscars never. So much for the movie 'Becket' - what a great film but the Oscars wished not to go to the right hands.
I can hear Peter O'Toole agree with me.
A thriller made five years before Burton's death.......2001-12-11
Absolution, an English psychological thriller with a strong anti-religion subtext (a genre almost single handedly created by the film's screenwriter Anthony Shaffer with his far superior film The Whicker Man), was one of Richard Burton's final films. After decades of heavy drinking and Liz Taylor, Burton, in his declining years, tended to show every sign of his lifestyle. This was often to the detriment of the film's he was involved in and Absolution is no different. In this film, Burton plays a rather niave, obviously repressed priest whose latent feelings for one of his students (Burton's character teaches Latin at a Catholic school) leaves him open to psychological manipulation. However, one look at Burton's tired, blood-shot eyes and his ravaged face and its hard to buy Burton in the role. Which is unfortunate because after years of contributing little to his performances beyond his famous voice, Burton actually does a pretty good job. With the exception of a few over-the-top scenes at the end, Burton brings a subtle sense of anguish to a character that, otherwise, would have been totally unsympathetic. In the film's best scenes, Burton suggests a great humanity underneath the priest's chilly surface and he makes the priest's sexual and later psychological torments quite believable.
The film's twisty plot is pure Shaffer -- a rigid, conservative system is thrown into chaos by the arrival of a liberating, almost pagan force (which, in a typical Shaffer twist, turns out to be as false as the establishment it destroys) and a great deal of senseless violence ensues. In Absolution, that establishment is the Catholic Boys School where Richard Burton teaches and dotes on one student (Dominic Guard) to an uncomfortable degree. That pagan force shows up as a bearded, Scottish drifter and theif (comedian Billy Connolly) who camps out in the countryside outside the school and ends up befriending Guard and leading the youth away from Burton and religion in general. (One of the film's flaws is that Guard's drastic transformation from good Catholic boy to Pagan prankster comes far too quickly.) Eventually, under Connolly's suggestion, Guard starts to tell Burton elaborate stories of sin during confession -- tormenting the priest with information that, as a priest, Burton is not allowed to share with anyone else. Eventually, what started as a joke spirals out of control into a vortex of murder, madness, and a surprise ending that comes out of nowhere but remains a lot of fun nonetheless.
Poorly directed by TV vet Anthony Page, the film's main appeal is to be found in its script and cast. Though not up to Shaffer's best work, Absolution -- especially early on -- displays a good deal of his stringent wit and he does a good enough job of keeping the story moving quickly enough that its not obvious just how ludicrous much of it is. He's helped by strong performances from his principles. Billy Connolly is likeable in a performance that'll surprise Americans who know him only as Howard Hesseman's replacement on Head of the Class. Andrew Kier, the final Prof. Quartermass, is a welcome presence as the school's head master while, as the two most distinctive students, Dominic Guard and David Bradley give nicely nuanced turns that alternate between youthful innocence and enigmatic slyness. Both Guard and Bradley were former child stars and both pretty much vanished from the screen following their performances in this film.
In the end, however, this is Burton's film and, even if miscast, he still gives an admirable performance that provides a much needed anchor to Shaffer's plot. Its a reminder -- after years of appearing in such claptrap as The Klansman and the Exorcist sequel, that Burton truly could be a good actor. This performance and his final turn in 1984 both suggest that, in his later years, Burton was finally ready to start acting again. Its difficult not to regret that he didn't get more chances to remind us of just how good he could be.
1 star due to very poor quality of amazon video.......2001-04-16
Amazon has duplicated this film on slow speed using very little tape. The result being the quality is so poor, one can barely watch it.
It is disgraceful that Amazon would do something like this. It is almost like a boot-legged video.
Don't BUY this video from Amazon.com
Green peas make green pasta.......2000-12-15
Not a bad video but has two awful performances with one terrible music score. After watching this I immediately put the tape in the toilet and tried to flush it down but it clogged it up and then it overflowed. That tape has been giving me problems ever since I began using it. Otherwise it is an okay piece not worth $1.50.
Burton's last starring role.......2000-04-18
A good film, not quite able to break out of TV limitations thanks to a mainly TV director and a script not up to par with Schaffer's prior Sleuth. But the performances and characterisations are excellent, and enough to grip a viewer thinking of England on a rainy afternoon.

Must Have For Muse Fans.......2005-12-21
If you love this band it is a must have, or even if you aren't! This is a full concert from their Earls court concert in December of 04, with a few songs from Los Angeles and San Francisco thrown in. The only down side of it is that there are only a one interview ( which is only a few minutes long) in the cut of the dvd that I have seen. Now this may change with the release of the American version, but highly unlikely. But the music is incredible and this only proves that this is one of the most powerful and talented bands on the planet. Buy this, it is very worth it.

The pefect anime...a reflection........2004-09-05
Having just finished watching the final episode in the series I can only say---astonishing...!
From the start, this entire series has been a masterpiece that displayed a diverse array of character development and a story of exciting tension and gripping turns of events. In addition there have also been wonderful moments of wild humour and warmth.
But all of that was merely a small portion of what twenty-six episodes of Infinite Ryvius has to offer.
Quirky moments aside, one could easily spend a month reflecting on the philosophical conflicts that broke out between the crew of the Ryvius on its quest of survival. They did not remain rigidly static characters either, as their individual views and behaviour radically changed according to their circumstances and personal revelations. Kouji's initial stoicism was pitted against Ikumi's emotional urgency to act. Aires Blue's blunt dictatorship of fear could be compared to Stein's complicated and strict systematic control by hierarchical segregration and merit-based incentives. All in all, this conflict was portrayed very well; offering the audience a mirror for which one could compare their own struggles within our real world societies. Also, it cannot be left unsaid that the final episode of Infinite Ryvius was the perfect denoument to the series' climax; leaving the audience with both resolution and an sense that each character had undergone great personal change and evolution.
Overall, Infinite Ryvius is the perfect anime simply because it delivers what its title promises: a desire to keep revisiting the series long after it has been first watched...with each new viewing bringing out something new. Thanks to Sunrise for bringing the manga to anime and thanks to the creators of Infinite Ryvius for a job well done.
