Wildly romantic, daringly exciting, Michael Mann's film of James Fenimore Cooper's novel created a new babe magnet out of Daniel Day-Lewis, he of the heaving pecs and flowing mane. As Hawkeye, he plays an American settler raised by the Mohicans who is forced to serve as a guide for British adventurism in upstate New York. But the British have been outflanked by the French (and their Indian allies); then British honor is betrayed when a band of renegades assaults them during their retreat. Mann captures the viciousness of this era's hand-to-hand combat in startling battle scenes. But he also invests the film with heartfelt romance, as the feelings swell between Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe. The ending is a stunner, a long, nearly wordless sequence of battle and loss. Strong performances all around, particularly by Russell Means as Chingachgook and Wes Studi as the evil Magua. --Marshall Fine

Description

An epic adventure and passionate romance unfold against the panorama of a frontier wilderness ravaged by war. Academy Award® winner Daniel Day-Lewis (Best Actor in 1989 for My Left Foot) stars as Hawkeye, rugged frontiersman and adopted son of the Mohicans, and Madeleine Stowe is Cora Munro, aristocratic daughter of a proud British Colonel. Their love, tested by fate, blazes amidst a brutal conflict between the British, the French and Native American allies that engulfs the majestic mountains and cathedral-like forests of Colonial America.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story.......2007-09-14

Excellent story of a adult caucasian man who was adopted into a Mohican family as a child and grew to be a blood brother. The story chronicles the man, his Mohican brother and father during the battle between American and French troops in colonial America. There are several subplots as the movie turns into a love story. Lots of action, romantic passion, and emotional passion. If you liked the "Patriot" you'll enjoy this also.

5 out of 5 stars Last of the Mohicans (Director's Expanded Edition).......2007-08-23

Excellent movie. Very good film dramatization of the novel, Last of the Mohicans, by James Fenimore Cooper. Always enjoy watching this film. Bought the DVD to replace the VHS version we have had for some time.
Main and supporting cast played their characters very well.

5 out of 5 stars Mohicans.......2007-08-18

Brilliant movie. Action, adventure, romance, tears (in my case many of them) Well acted by all in the movie, bar none. This is one of the best movies that I have ever had the pleasure to watch. From the opening hunting scenes to the last scene where the three stand alone on the cliff, it grabbed me by the heart, mind and spirit and carried me along as if I was there. In my opinion, a true American epic of a motion picture. The British Crown just couldn't leave the colonials alone. They had to follow them to America and rain down their tyranny here just as they did in Great Britain. The British promised much and delivered very little or nothing. Truth and justice won out in the end. I have to say that the last chase sequence up the mountainside to free the hostage was the most intense thing I have ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars Thrilled.......2007-08-17

I had this movie on video years ago but it was stolen. Now I have a big HDTV & this movie is so thrilling! I had a friend over to watch it & we were both on the edge of our seats & crying at the end! Thank you so much, Amazon. I have yet to be disappointed with any item purchased on your site.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking & Brilliant.......2007-07-20

had to watch this in my History of Imperial Britain class, and enjoyed it so much I stopped at Best Buy after class to buy it.

For a movie to be really, truly enjoyable for me, it has to have an amazing love story. And this one blows many other movie romances out of the water. Nathaniel's declaration to cora abou finding her no matter how long it takes just sends chills down my spine. The romance is beautifully acted and perfectly written. It's not over the top or unrealistic., its absolutely perfect.

Even without the romance, I would still enjoy this movie. The acting s superb by everyone. Even the characters you want to dislike (for me thats Magua and Col. Munro), you still understand their motivations for doing what they're are doing.

The scenery is breathtaking. As a North Carolina native, I feel a hint of pride at seeing ow beautiful parts of the state are.

Its a wonderful movie, and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Lovely to look at, this story reveals little more than the characters' nude bodies. Like couples whose only attraction is physical, this has little to offer once it leaves the bedroom. We never learn the interests or inner workings of the lovers in question. They become nothing more than attractive bodies, which makes this little more than a shallow exercise in sexuality. The story is based on the controversial, and supposedly autobiographical, bestseller by experimental French novelist Marguerite Duras. It tells the story of a young French schoolgirl who becomes sexually involved with a sophisticated, older Asian man. Set in Indochina in the late 1920s, this is stunningly photographed and artfully directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. That said, the lack of a more satisfying plot means this is merely tastefully produced soft porn. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Description

From the novel of the same namewhich has sold over one million copies in 43 languagesthis "sophisticated adaptation of Marguerite Duras' best-selling memoirs" (Variety) smolders on the screen. "Masterfully acted and beautifully photographed" (Critics' Choice), The Lover brilliantly captures the essence of sexual awakening and forbidden desire like no other film has donebeforeor since. Jane March is mesmerizing in the role of a poor French teenager who engages in an illicit affair with a wealthy Chinese heir (Tony Leung) in 1920s Saigon. For the first time in her young life she has control, and she wields it deftly over her besotted lover throughout a series of clandestine meetings and torrid encounters. But though the lovers are able to transcend their differences in age, race and class'theirs is a future that French colonial Vietnamese society will never allow.

4 out of 5 stars The Lover.......2007-09-10

First this should have an NC-17 rating at the minimum. Adult content and nudity throughout the movie. Beyond this I would say it is a period movie set in the 1930's. The story is not new in the sense it's an inter=racial couple having an affair. Good scenery shots. Just something to add to my collection as I am a big Jane March fan.

4 out of 5 stars Miss March..........2007-08-24

If you have seen Jane March in The Color of Night opposite Bruce Willis, you know what to expect here as well. Lots of sex and skin, with some decent acting as well. Do not watch this one with mother...The movie is a haunting "love" story with numerous scenes involving a young looking March fully nude. She is beautiful and gives a decent performance as well. The Lover is enjoyable on a visual level mostly, but has a fair plot as well.

3 out of 5 stars Dressed up "porn".......2007-08-12

This film could have accomplished the same story telling and been more effective if it did not have so much graphic sex. Make no mistake, this film shows the complete sex act several times and has full frontal female nudity ( funny as graphic as it is we still don't see front male nudity only his rear, double standard marches on). I did cry at the end of the story as it was moving but the graphic sex through out made me feel I was watching porn, and it was a distraction from the depth of the character study. At teh end of the story we are told these two had great love for each other, but all we see between them is the sex act, over and over.

5 out of 5 stars SEXUAL AND STEAMY!!!For him was it love or obsession ? For her was it love or sexual awakening?.......2007-08-09

It has taken me two days to write this review. I was so awestruck by this film THE LOVER that I really pondered it before writing.Simply put, THE LOVER is an absolutely stunning and shockingly evocative piece of cinematic art.I knew NOTHING about this film before watching it, so I was totally taken by surprise by the depths of sexuality and passion that this film plummets. It is hard to express it otherwise. The film is dumbfounding in it's subject matter, acting, story, cinematography and soundtrack. This is what I like to call an "all-around film".....every note rings true!

Told from a detached point of view, THE LOVER concerns the 18-year-old "the girl"(Jane March) in 1929 Indochina (French Colonial Vietnam),and her relationship with the 32-year-old "the Chinaman"(Tony Leung). She is awakening sexually and he is obsessed with her.The very intense relationship progresses as each plays with each other's bodies, lives and feelings. He says that he is in a prearranged marriage and cannot marry her.But he seems totally taken with her.She says that sex is totally fine with her, but could she be denying that it is love that she feels? With both families aware and opposed to their meeting,"the girl" and "the Chinaman" continue on exploring each other. It is only at the end that the true feelings are revealed. This may sound to some rather dull and boring, but trust me it is not! This is as sensitive as it is steamy, and will leave you breathless. This film has explicit sex scenes (very explicit),but they are so artfully done that one is not shocked, but rather is drawn into the experience that these two souls are having.I have never seen anything like it. If you are the slightest bit of a prude...well....you lose! This is a riveting and rare piece of film. You will not easily forget this one.

Excellent companion films would be INDOCHINE,THE QUIET AMERICAN, SOLOMON AND GAENOR, LOLITA and AN AFFAIR OF LOVE (Une Liaison Pornographique).

4 out of 5 stars A Bittersweet Tale.......2007-07-11

This movie is so much more than porn/sex. After the young girl and the older Chinese man first make love, he tells her they would never be able to get married if she was from his culture because she has slept with him before she was married. She says she does not like Chinese people, but you can see she just says this to be defensive. Deep down you can tell she is a little hurt because she wanted him to be her first, but she is sad because she knows it will never be more than sex between them. He is the nicest person to her in her entire life with an abusive older brother and mentally imbalanced mother, which may seem hard to understand since she is considered underage. However, she knew fully well what she was doing and it turns out her Chinese lover comes to truly love her. She rejects his love in so many different ways, but he continues to show her that he cares. In the end she realizes she loved him too and it is very sad and bittersweet. We know from the beginning that this affair would never work out, but part of us just wishes she could have told her lover that she loved him too.

5 out of 5 stars Lana Turner's Best Movie.......2007-08-14

This is the finest movie of Lana Turner's career! I viewed it in the theater as a small child and was thrilled to learn it was now on DVD!! I enjoyed it so much.

5 out of 5 stars One of my mom's favorites.......2007-08-11

I purchased this movie for my mom, and she was so happy to have it. Wonderful movie!!

4 out of 5 stars Sentimental and Politically Charged.......2007-05-19

Imitation of Life is a politically charged movie in the style of a woman's film. Lana Turner stars as an aspiring actress who makes it big in spite of her age and the fact that she has a young daughter (Sandra Dee). In times of poverty, she meets Juanita Moore, a kindly black woman with a daughter of her own (Susan Kohner). This little girl is so light skinned, she could pass as white, and does on many occasions. She is ashamed of her mother and acts out constantly. However, she and Turner's daughter are close friends, and Moore takes care of the family nicely.

We are shown that mothers with careers are almost always doomed to fail. When one is focused on, the other is neglected. Also, race is an important factor; this film was released in the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement.

The performances in this movie are excellent and the cast is wonderful. Moore really outdoes herself with her performance; she is appropriately realistic and sentimental throughout, making for a wonderful overall story.

5 out of 5 stars Still a tear jerker.......2007-05-14

I was so pleased to receive this DVD its an all time classic and now I can add it to my library. I also ordered one for a friend of mine and gave it to her along with a box of kleenex. The picture quality is excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Real Artifice.......2007-05-13

Reality doesn't get any more artificial than this, but what glorious artificiality. Lana Turner as a struggling actress in a cold-water flat--with her maid, instant success on Broadway and a parade of millionaire stage-door Johnnies wanting her, and more changes of gowns and jewels than you'd find in New York during Fashion Week. Grateful and ungrateful daughters, a minor Electra complex, tasteful racism, and ultimate redemption. And not a hint of the "real world" to intrude on the characters's self-absorbtion. This is a home-run of Sirkian excess.

A prim young Chinese woman on the Kowloon ferry accuses a middle-aged American of stealing her purse--thus begins a culture-clash romance. Seeking to escape his stifled life, Robert (William Holden, Stalag 17, Sunset Boulevard) has come to Hong Kong to become an artist. He rediscovers the girl from the ferry and learns she is not what she seemed; she's a prostitute named Suzie Wong (Nancy Kwan, Flower Drum Song). Though Robert resists her charms, she becomes his model, and their relationship grows surprisingly complex. While The World of Suzie Wong can be patronizing and has some dubious interpretations of Chinese manners and mores, it's also sophisticated (in a censored sort of way) about love, sex, and social pressure. A viewer may scoff at the child-like hookers, yet find the movie accumulates an unexpected emotional force, particularly through its exploration of how the characters maintain their illusions. --Bret Fetzer

This is a very good film, the stars are good William Holden, Nancy Kwan,
This is avery good look a Japan in its early days, as to where the houses on the side of the cliffs.
Also the story is a very good one

5 out of 5 stars A great love story filmed in one of the greatest cities!.......2007-06-26

If you have been to, or lived on, Hong Kong this movie is a must see. The Star Ferry as it was, the vibrancy of a city that never stops. William Holden in one of his best roles and Nancy Kwan make a terrific couple for a love story that is poignant and rich with character. Love knows no cultural or class boundaries and this film proves that point. I will watch it any time and highly recommend it. You'll enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Love Story.......2007-02-06

A tale of forbidden love. William Holden journeys to Hong Kong to explore his talent as an artist. On the ferry from Kowloon to Hong Kong, he meets the stunningly beautiful Mei-Li(Nancy Kwan), posing as the daughter of a very rich and powerful father. In reality she is an extremely vulnerable prostitute named Suzie Wong. Mr. Holden's character soon falls deeply in love with her. Posing as his model, they establish what becomes one of the most romantic screen romances ever. But falling in love with a Chinese woman or man, in British occupied Hong Kong was greatly frowned upon. Especially a prostitute. A very good portrayal of the exploitative flesh market, that continues throughout Asia to this day. A film for mature audiences that was well ahead of its time.

5 out of 5 stars A true to Life story.......2006-11-10

A very good true to life story. It is a worthy movie that depicts the everyday life of love, opportunities and adventure in busy and crowded Hong Kong. The story line is good reflecting the everyday life in Hong Kong, even to this day.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2006-11-05

This classic was a wondeful movie that everyone should enjoy. William Holden was absolutely fantastic. The love storey also showed another side of the world with real life problems that many people experience. I would recommend this movie to anyone. It was so entertaining you will not want to miss one second.

Based on a novel by James Michener, Sayonara earned a fistful of Oscar® nominations (including Best Picture, Director, and Actor) in 1957 and wound up winning statuettes for supporting actors Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki. Marlon Brando plays a Korean War fighter pilot, the son of a general, reassigned to Japan, where fraternization with local women is taboo. After breaking off his engagement to another general's daughter, he finds himself falling for a Japanese entertainer (Miiko Taka), then struggling with his own bias. Subplots deal with other servicemen (played by Buttons and James Garner) who also fall for Japanese women. Directed by Joshua Logan from a script by Paul Osborn, the film takes a then-daring look at prejudice as well as post-war racial bias against the Japanese. Brando's Southern accent makes him sound like Matthew McConaughey, while Buttons is actually touching as tough, tender American struggling against racism. --Marshall Fine

4 out of 5 stars A Two-Hanky Classic!.......2007-07-09

There have been some comments in reviews around the net about the picture-postcard look of this film being a little hard to believe. But I can assure you, having lived in Japan during the years the film was made and released, that this is exactly what it looked like then. From the military scenes, the big city, religious shrines and parks, to the seedy canal village.

What's hard to believe of course, besides Brando's accent, is the almost magical ability of a boorish, and not so subtly chauvinistic character like Ace Gruver to, within a few days, bridge the immense cultural and societal gap between the "Ugly American" and the cloistered superstar Hana-Ogi, and in the first date get a commitment of eternal love from her! Still, the ethereal beauty and personality that Miiko Taka brings to the role makes this improbable love story just as believable as any star-crossed classic. It's a wonder that Taka didn't get nominated too.

One of my yardsticks for how classic a film really is relies on how impressed I was with it as a kid, and 50 years later finding out how good it still is, even after I now understand what it's really about, and how movies are really made.

Despite it's few silly drawbacks though, this is definitely a minimum two-hanky date flick for couples at any level of involvement.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Brando film.......2007-05-16

This is a rather silly story line, and Brando is really miscast but as always he is fun to watch. Red Buttons gives an excellent performance as a soldier married to a Japanese woman during the occupation. Still an interesting performance from Brando.

3 out of 5 stars A well padded, slow moving 1950's melodrama.......2007-03-12

Unfortunately, this movie will give future generations absolutely no clue as to why Marlon Brando was considered one of the finest actors of his day. Every one of his tics and affectations are on display; the shambling slouch, the beetle browed grimace, the inexplicable adoption of a disfiguring and ludicrous accent (southern this time). All of which rendered him totally unbelievable as a spit and polish West Point graduate. What was he thinking? Why did the director let him get away with it?

Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki carry the acting honors in this one, and James Garner too, who made me wish he had been given the leading role instead.

What I appreciate most about this moive, however, was the way it endeavored to introduce Western audiences to the different forms of Japanese theatre. For that, I will even forgive it the rather alarming sight of Ricardo Montelban as a Japanese Kabuki actor. By the way, the all girl revue in the picture is based on the very famous and still extant Takarazuka All-Girl Revue.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Movie!.......2007-01-22

Marlon Brando and Red Buttons are at their best in this movie! This is a great love story!

Opposites attract in this love story for the younger set. Carlos is a straight-laced poor boy working his way toward a better life. Nicole is a rich girl with a wild streak who can't seem to stay out of trouble. Can it be that they're meant for each other? Yes, of course it can. Crazy/Beautiful follows a familiar pattern--the two young lovers come from different worlds, and no one else understands them--but has a few intelligent wrinkles to the standard star-crossed plot. Nicole's dad, for example, actually likes Carlos and worries that Nicole will corrupt him. Kirsten Dunst and Jay Hernandez give assured performances as the young lovers, and the movie's message of tolerance comes across without being preachy. As teen love stories go, you could do far worse. Adults may be left cold by Crazy/Beautiful, but teens--especially those with a dramatic streak--will enjoy this well-intentioned romance. --Ali Davis

5 out of 5 stars Far from rehashed territory, gives a nice spin on a tired subject..........2007-07-09

I've always been an advocate for Kirsten Dunst. I feel she's a brilliantly talented actress who chooses challenging and engaging roles for herself. She shines in just about everything and continues to impress me with each selected performance. That said, I was forced to see this movie. It just looked to me like another in a long line of recycled and regurgitated teen love stories that plays out the same way and never initiates any real care or concern on the part of the audience. I did however see this film, in the theater at that, and have to say that by the films end I was in complete shock. `Crazy/Beautiful' is a genuinely great film, from the script to the acting to the films execution. While the subject material may appear like `Romeo & Juliet' light, it veers enough from its pre-chosen path to establish originality and demand rewatchability.

`Crazy/Beautiful' casts Dunst as trouble child Nicole, a misunderstood daughter of a wealthy congressman who battles her stepmother every step of the way and vies for attention through one screw up after another. She doesn't take anything serious, not school, not boys, not anything but then she by chance meets Carlos, a boy who is her complete opposite. Carlos studies hard, gets up extra early to travel a long distance to attend a good school so he can make something of himself. He takes everything seriously, that is until he meets Nicole. Their relationship is explosive and, according to their families, dangerous. Nicole's father even pleads with Carlos to stay far away from his daughter, not because he's concerned for her well being but because he's concerned for Carlos, fearing that Nicole with ruin him. It's in these small changes that `Crazy/Beautiful' distinguishes itself apart from the other fluff.

As the film progresses we can see the relationship between the two of them bend and break only to reform stronger than before. It's actually a realistic look at teenage relationships today. Of course it's dramatized for Hollywood but if you really take a second to analyze what you're watching you'll see that it all rings forth very true. Nicole is far from a bad child, just a misunderstood one who craves love and attention she's not receiving from those who should be handing it out to her unconditionally. What I love most about this film is that instead of really painting Nicole's father and stepmother as downright evil they are portrayed realistically, as confused adults who have no idea how to handle someone they feel is bucking them constantly. As much as the audience is persuaded to hate the stepmother I feel that in the end she's given credibility. This is a film that exposes the faults of all parties involved.

What really drives this film home is the powerful performance given by Kirsten Dunst. She's amazing here, giving so much genuine emotion, investing so much heart into Nicole that she breathes to life before us. Dunst is effective throughout, but scenes like her drunken breakdown at the feet of her father are especially effective, awards worthy even. How this girl keeps escaping Oscar's eye is beyond me. Newcomer Jay Hernandez is wonderful as well as Carlos and proves he has what it takes to light up the screen, but against Dunst riveting performance he's a little dry. I was very pleased with Bruce Davison's portrayal of Nicole's father and of course was smitten with Taryn Manning who just explodes with charm and charisma as Nicole's BFF Maddy. Great film overall, one that desires to be looked at and beautifully lives up to its name.

4 out of 5 stars NICOLE / CARLOS : A LOVE STORY.......2007-03-24

John Stockwell's CRAZY/BEAUTIFUL describes a conformist love story in an environment that doesn't react the way it should react. In a mainstream movie, the Mexican parents of Carlos Nuñez would have cherished Nicole Oatley with the usual Latin warmth and Nicole's family would have rejected Carlos because of his social and race background. Congressman Tom Oakley, even if he's a member of the Democrat party, wouldn't have accepted that his daughter sees the son of a chicano. Thanks to the unusual handling of this love story, in addition to the exceptional performance of Kirsten Dunst, CRAZY/BEAUTIFUL deserves to appear in your rental list.

A DVD zone Mamas and Papas.

5 out of 5 stars yin-yang.......2006-10-24

You know how some movies are such an intense experience that you feel changed in some way? And how you can't stop thinking about how powerful certain scenes were? Yeah. This is one of those.

The way Nicole and Carlos complete each other is incredible. At first, Nicole is lost and destructive. The solid schedule of homework, football practice, and family obligations deteriorates for Carlos as he becomes engulfed in Nicole's world of chaos and drama. But their love is something real, strong enough to make everything change. Carlos realizes that he has to make sacrifices in order to save Nicole from herself, and Nicole realizes that she's ready to become the person she's always wanted to be. Carlos helps her find the way home.

This is an awesome movie that shows us how beautiful true love is, and how crazy it would be to settle for anything less.

5 out of 5 stars "Our skin looks so beautiful together.".......2006-05-19

If 'Crazy/Beautiful' served no purpose other than a template for young talent consider it done, for all three young stars (Kirsten Dunst, Jay Hernandes & Tarryn Manning) all put there best feet forward in this critically acclaimed teen drama. The story, while it's been done before, has never quite been done this well. Nicole (Dunst in one of her BEST performances to date) is a rich girl with a wild side who continues to stress her father and push her stepmother further away. Carlos (Hernandes in his breakout role) on the other hand is a poor boy trying hard to make the best of himself, traveling further than need be, waking up earlier than need be, all to get a better education and get a chance to be something bigger than he is. When they meet it's lust at first sight, but as they grow together they realize how much they need each other. This is a touching family film that shows well how a childs feeling of neglect and unwantedness can damage there relationships and even result in their inability for better relationships in the future. Kirsten Dunst is truly a star and she shines so much in this film delivering what has to be her most stunning and commanding performance to date. This is far from just your typical teen film but it explores real issues with taste and tact and proves itself to be a very very good movie.

A great star and a great composer can make a Broadway musical into a smash, as Ethel Merman and Irving Berlin proved with Call Me Madam. Not a bad place to start with a movie, either, and the 1953 film of the show has both Merman and Berlin represented in brassy fashion. Granted, Merman's platinum-throated talents were best suited to the stage, and the production overall has that dutiful, stodgy tone of so many Fox musicals. Extra points for the suavity of George Sanders (he's Merman's love interest in tiny Lichtenburg, where the lady has been appointed U.S. ambassador), and for the dancing of Vera-Ellen and Donald O'Connor. A year after crashing through the wall in Singin' in the Rain, O'Connor has a similar solo athletic workout to "What Chance Have I with Love." High point: Merman and O'Connor trading verses on "You're Just in Love," the best tune in a bouncy score. --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful nostalgia trip.......2006-08-12

I originally saw this movie when I was 10 years old and over the years remembered the wonderful dancing and songs. I was disappointed that it never seemed to turn up on TV and was delighted to be able to buy my own copy. When I saw it again recently it was even better than I had remembered it. Donald O'Connor's partnership with Vera-Ellen is enchanting - I've watched their dances over and over. And Ethel Merman lights up the screen every time she is on - her interpretation of the memorable Berlin songs, whether belted out or sweetly romantic - is, I believe, unbeatable. I now want to get all the other Merman movies. And what a shame that George Sanders' deep, rich baritone wasn't more widely heard.

I got this movie because James Darren was in it. He was good as was France Nguyen. They play the only likeable characters in the main cast and neither makes it through the whole movie. Of course I knew that when I bought it.

4 out of 5 stars A good old movie.......2006-03-25

I remember this movie when it came out, so that really "dates" me. I was young when it was released, and I loved the stars of it (well most of them) and it was the beginning of a love affair with Hawaii. The story line is old, it's that outdated stuff about prejudice over skin color, that is similar to the West Side Story theme and others of that time. But I really enjoy the acting of everyone in this (although not a Charlton Heston fan) and although I am younger than Yvette Mimeux as a young girl I thought she was so beautiful and I was such a fan of hers. Also back in those days I was a James Darren fan (especially being a South Philly girl myself as a child) despite his small role in this and also a George Chakaris fan and I so enjoy the acting and the beautiful scenery. If you are young and you don't care for old movies, this won't do it for you. If you're older like me, it could bring back some memories. If you just enjoy movies, you will like it.

5 out of 5 stars Diamond Head.......2005-10-13

A movie I can watch over and over. Some painful truths set in a beautiful place and time.

Description

Loyalty and allegiance clash with desire in this gritty, real and provocative film, set in the violent world of warring Latino gangs on Chicago's Southside. When Angel defects from his gang to join his secret lover, Isaac, in his rival gang, tensions explode as Isaac is ordered to kill Angel. Award-winning director Tadeo Garcia compellingly captures the sweet, seductive poignancy of the relationship that develops between the sworn enemies and the tough gangbanger lifestyle that threatens to destroy it.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Maybe a passing grade for effort, but surely no success.......2007-02-20

This galling film-maker takes time (before the opening credits even begin) to plaster his film-festival awards and accolades before your eyes. I guess the implication is that, if you don't like this film, then you must be wrong.

Well, then I must be wrong, because this poorly-paced, spottily-acted, amature film is remarkably unaffecting and pretty much pointless, unless you enjoy watching rival gang violence and lots of banal dialog. Then there is the horrendous ending. The comparisons to Romeo and Juliet are really unflattering to Romeo and Juliet. This is not Shakespeare, and isn't even mediocre.

I'd skip this one and try something else. Most gay movies, even cheapie indies, are far better than this.

4 out of 5 stars Truly The Little Film That Could!.......2007-02-20

This passioned-filled, well-acted, tragic little love story, really knocked me out. Though this heartbreaking "Romeo and Juliet-esque" tale of two young Latino men from opposite gangs who fall in love, cannot compete with Brokeback Mountain's tens-of-millions in production value, this $8,000 film, touchingly directed by first-timer Tadeo Garcia, well-written by Roger B. Domain, convincingly acted by the handsome, star-crossed lovers Michael Cortez (as Angel) and Tony Sancho (as Isaac), and a solid supporting cast of newcomers and fresh faces, equals the oscar-winner in heart and soul.

I know that homophobia still runs rampant in our society (How do you say Tim Hardaway?), but Mssers. Garcia and Domain have taken a 21st Century approach to a social reality that is as old as time itself. Neither of our heroes--handsome, virile, macho--seem necessarily challenged by their communities or themselves due to their sexual natures. Both their mothers seem to casually accept their same-sex attractions, objecting more to the perceived personality of the object of their respective son's affection, not the gender.

Nor do the gang members seem as bothered, aware, or concerned with [..] though they throw the [..] word around freely and generically. (However, a sly tableau near the film's conclusion is quite telling.)

What threatens the well-being of this great love is family enmity, two gangs, enemies as sworn as the Montegues and Capulets. Our hearts go out to Angel and Isaac, hoping that somehow they might be able to overcome the seemingly innsurmmountable. We are bolstered toward that possibilty by the beautifully and deeply rendered kiss these two men share that says all about their undying committment to each other.

Still, gang loyalty and it's life-and-death ultimatum rears it's ugly head, and with many real-life tragedies, those that survive hopefully learn a lesson in making the world better, and the realization that love is better than anything, and that it is even worth dying for.

I can't wait to see what first-time director Tadeo Garcia can do with an Ang Lee budget. He already has the heart. All he needs is 'the bucks.' Wake up, Hollywood!

4 out of 5 stars Tadeo Garcia: A Voice to Hear, A Talent to Applaud.......2007-02-20

Gradually movie audiences are turning more serious attention to the little Independent films for quality and meaning in story and in style and in brave confrontation with issues outside the perimeter of the Hollywood style films. A fine example is this remarkable film by student Tadeo Garcia whose first year in film school produced the outline of this little gem of a movie and whose courageous 'first film' gained the respect of screenwriter Roger B. Domain who helped him transfer the skeletal story into a full length film ON THE DOWNLOW, all on a budget of $8,000.!

From the opening scenes we can sense that we are watching a love story, but it is a story of forbidden love: Angel (Michael Cortez) is escaping his Chicago street gang with the help of Isaac (Tony Sancho) and the two warmly human, supportive, sensitive young youths flee to the territory of Isaac's low neighborhood where Isaac convinces Angel to give up his allegiance to his former gang and pledge to Isaac's gang, a rasty group led by Reaper (Donato Cruz). Very gradually and with incredible decorum Garcia reveals to us that Angel and Isaac are lovers, the only time the union is shown physically is a prolonged kiss in an open night alley, an event which will trigger the force of destiny: it is enough as the scene is passionate yet gracefully not graphic.

The boys' mothers plead with them to not carry guns and to avoid gang alliance, but at the same time they lovingly accept their sons' sexuality. But life is as it is on the streets of south side Chicago and Angel is accepted into Isaac's gang, having to undergo the cruel initiation beating that accompanies his joining. Reaper is later informed that Angel is an ex-gang member of the rival gang and Isaac is the one Reaper determines should kill the offending Angel. The two lovers try to escape Chicago but the inevitable happens and the ending is tragic but with undertones that are subtly captured by Garcia's eye, mind, camera, and heart: the final confrontation scene ends with our enabled view of evidence that other members of the gang share the same 'on the downlow' as Angel and Isaac.

Not only are Tony Sancho and Michael Cortez wholly believable in their dichotomous roles, but the entire cast is filled with raw yet gifted talent: Felipe Camacho as the Priest, Beatriz Jamaica as Angel's mother and Carmen Cenko as Isaac's mother, Donato Cruz as Reaper, Adelina Quinones (a terrific screen presence) as Laura, and all the youngsters who convincingly bring the gang members to life. Yes, there are evidences of low budget constraints, but the overwhelming success of the story of two young men in love against the backdrop of hopelessness of crime is brilliant evidence that Tadeo Garcia is a gifted talent to watch. "ON THE DOWNLOW"

Romeo and Romeo in the Hood

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"On the Downlow" (Image) is not your usual gay movie by any means. We do not think of thugs as being gay, especially not members of radical gangs. Here is a romantic and tragic film of love between two rival gang members of Southside Chicago. Perhaps the title s an unfamiliar term to you but "on the downlow" is a reference to street guys who are "straight" but have sex with men in secret.
Angel is a member of the Latin Kings but he has a secret lover named Isaac who belongs to a different gang. They meet in secret and no one knows of their relationship. Angel double crosses his own gang and Isaac, at that time, tries to get him to come into his own gang.
Tadeo Garcia has entered territory not yet explored with his direction of this film. He manages to show us first hand the life on the streets of gang heavy Chicago and his actors who are all first timers give excellent performers. He film, itself, is suspenseful and laden with twists and turns as well as gang brutality. This is not any easy film to watch but it is enlightening and has the heart and soul not found often in films of this sort. I did expect a great deal more violence at the end and if there is a fault to "On the Dowlow", it is that the ending could have been stronger. I expected to see more deaths at the conclusion.
Similar to the classic Shakespearean "Romeo and Juliet", it is the tale of two families (gangs) where a member of one family is in love with a member of the other family. The rest I will leave to you to discover. What is the most amazing thing about the film is that it was made as a student project and as such it is a bit uneven. I predict that the director will have a huge career if this film is any sign of things to come. This explosive story opens our eyes to things we knew nothing about and does so with power. Our two main characters live in a society where the decisions that they make and the paths they choose to take create a trap and a brutal end for them. Their community will not take to secrets and rules cannot be broken.
As a film that is ahead of its time and breaks down stereotypes this is a movie not to be missed. There is no love scene in the film just a kiss that says it all. Hat kiss which takes place in the raw of a neighborhood alley speaks legions of words and carries and conveys the emotions of the two young men. The fact that these two guys love "on the downlow" sets us up for the tragedy which follows them. When things go back, they go bad very quickly. I think what the film is really about is the danger inherent in keeping secrets and what can happen in a world which is dominated by gangs. The beauty of the film is the way it sends its thesis to the audience--quietly and beautifully. What a great way for Garcia to begin his movie career.

3 out of 5 stars The Little Film That Could, and Did........2007-01-14

It is cruel to give this film just three stars, because its heart, soul, and spirit are five stars. It is a must-see for any one who is looking for signs of intelligent life on the planet.
The credits tout its success in many film festivals. Only uneven pacing and an ending insufficiently violent to be satisfying mark this as an early work in someone's arc. This is Shakespearean tragedy, after all. The stage should be littered with corpses.
Some may want to stop reading here. Anyone who recognizes to which tragedy I refer, or who has seen West Side Story, may guess some of the ending.
The story is about two families, here as two Chicago gangs that are its members' families. A member of one gang has a member of the other as a lover, secretly. The second man wants to leave his gang, and join the other. If the gang he wants to join discovers him as a member of the other, he will be killed.
There are many other elements from Shakespeare's version included in this film, such as a reference to the famous masquerade ball from Shakespeare, as well as to the dance at the gym in West Side Story. I'll leave it to others to identify more, or to disagree with me.
I hope that the makers of the film have not read the play to which I refer; that would make the parallels downright spooky and even archetypal.
