Let's get this straight: Drew Barrymore started a production company to develop original scripts outside of Hollywood and the first project she chose to produce was this, a romantic comedy written by USC grads Abby Kohn and Mark Silverstein about a nerdy, virginal woman who returns to high school as an undercover reporter, finally gets to be popular, and falls in love. And Barrymore decided, as producer, that the perfect actress to play this virtuous, clean-cut, and downright annoying geek would be... Drew Barrymore? It's hard to believe that after The Wedding Singer Barrymore's not getting enough dopey, formulaic, predictable romantic comedies coming across her desk. The complete inability to buy Barrymore as unattractive, awkward, and unpopular ruins Never Been Kissed from the start, but it's doubtful a better actress could have saved it. The jokes fall flat, the romance between Barrymore and her English teacher (played by Michael Vartan) lacks chemistry, and the portrayals of high school and the newspaper newsroom is clichéd and uninspired (big surprise here: the director, Raja Gosnell, previously made Home Alone 3). Gosnell can't even give the gifted character actor, John C. Reilly, anything to do. Only David Arquette, who plays Barrymore's out-of-control brother, brings any energy to the film. --Dave McCoy

Description

In this hilarious, heartwarming comedy, Drew Barrymore shines as a budding journalist who's determined to go from 'geek' to 'chic' when she is sent back to high school on her first undercover assignment to lern about today's teens. At first, Josie is thrilled with the opportunity until she remembers her nickname from years ago: "Josie Grossie!" Can a former clueless nerd navigate the hallways of high school without trippin over her own feet?

5 out of 5 stars Will remind you of how far you have come ...........2007-07-15

Having had a testy week where I ended up with two flat tires on one side of my car at the same time on a little traveled road, I got the car towed and arrived home late and was so glad something light hearted like this movie was playing.

Yes, its sappy, yes its silly, yes, it makes you cry. But it also is the type of movie if one is honest will remind you of how far you have come since you were in high school. And how high school probably made you stronger in some way, like Marine boot camp makes a man or woman stronger.

I was so happy to see the movie stayed on course and that unlike some movies didn't play fast and loose with the facts of life. The character played by Drew Barrymore, does become someone the high school joke wants. But whoever wrote the script played it right and never allowed her to kiss the guy, because she was playing a woman over the age of 21, and the guy was a high school student and thus under the age of 18. This simply shows that whoever wrote the script did so, knowing what the laws are and that no reputable reporter would allow themselves to get so caught up in their undercover story that they would intentionally break the law.

Also loved the movie because it showed how no matter who you are in high school, be it the jock, the nerd, the cheerleader, the mall rat, popular or not so popular, one has challenges, and that there is no perfect ride. In fact at the end when Drew Barrymore's character sees the three popular snotty girls about to do something mean to the nerd girl whom the jock and now homecoming king is dancing with, she jumps in and saves the day, and then lets loose and outs herself as an undercover reporter, and proceeds to remind all those at the prom, that who they are now, is not who they will be in a few years. That high school is like a cocoon that in many ways protects one from the real world. That life holds different things for us as we walk down life's path.

So its a movie anyone from high school age to eighty can actually learn from. Even if it is to remind us of what we went thru, where we are now and that how we treat the least amongst us is really important. Also think that anyone with kids who are entering or are in high school would be wise to watch this movie.

I totally love this movie, definitely worth watching. Check it out!

3 out of 5 stars REMINDED ME OF THOSE OLD 80'S HIGH SCHOOL COMEDIES.......2007-04-18

When I watched this film, it reminded me of so many of those comedies from the 80's about high school. I thought Barrymore was good as usual and the film was pretty good for a romantic comedy. The DVD has a very good transfer.

5 out of 5 stars A modern classic comedy.......2007-04-08

For those of us who went through the "Josie Grossie" stage, this movie is a welcome comedy, a sort of Revenge of the Nerds meets The Princess Diaries. Josie Gellar (Drew Barrymore), a 25-year-old copy editor/reporter, has never quite gotten over her traumatic high school years, replete with bad hair days and insensitive classmates. Understandably, she has mixed emotions when her boss, noticing how young she looks, decides Josie can go undercover and give "Sun" readers the latest scoop on high school life. So back to Fast Times at Ridgemont High... Not only is Josie anxious about this assignment, but she's worried about her personal life. At 25, Josie has never even kissed a guy (or rather, been kissed by a guy)--but she doesn't just want to kiss any guy, but someone really special.

While researching this high school expose, Josie has painful flashbacks as she witnesses how kids treat each other. (That a woman as pretty as Drew Barrymore would be willing to look as bad as she possibly can is sheer dedication to her art!) Through her brother's influence on the popular kids (he earns coolness points as a local baseball phenomenon), Josie gets inducted to the alpha crowd and unwittingly slights her "uncool" (second-time around) high school friends. Josie enjoys her English class and surprises her teacher, uber-handsome Sam Coulson, with her love for words and knowledge on the subject. Meanwhile, the Sun eavesdrops on Josie and her high school adventures.

Sam (Michael Vartan), is noplussed by Josie's maturity yet apparent youth. When he learns that Josie is an undercover reporter, he becomes hurt and angry. Josie tries to apologize through the very tabloid that brought on her trouble--and readers anxiously await to see if Sam will meet Josie in a baseball stadium to deliver her first kiss before the appointed time.

(Let me interject my two cents here: Michael Vartan is hot...he has my ideal body type, sigh...I was writhing with jealousy during the kissing scene!)

This movie is hilarious and well-written. It's been accused of being formulaic, but so what? It has a good message and is very funny.

My friends and I never tire of watching this movie, and the expression, "Josie Grossie" has taken on a life of its own. When we show pictures from our childhood to each other, we often qualify them as, "This picture was taken from my Josie Grossie years." (You know, glasses, braces, bad hair, the works...) Or, even in our grown-up years, we'll tell each other if we're feeling particularly Josie Grossie on a given day.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Romantic Comedy.......2007-01-05

The storyline is simple and fun. That's the way I like them. It also helps to be a huge fan of Drew Barrymore.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZZZZING! .......2007-07-14

I saw Bride and Prejudice probably a year or two ago, and I liked it a lot, but recently I decided to see some hardcore Bollywood... as in: not in English. I picked this one randomly, and bit my nails as I waited for it to arrive. Wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles: it's my new favorite movie. I love it! I am now embarking on what I hope will be a very long Bollywood obsession. I will begin with all movies starring Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan (they were FABULOUS in this movie)... and if I"m still in love with Bollywood... I will move on to just him, as in this movie he stole my heart away. *sigh* what an amazing movie!

5 out of 5 stars My first subtitled Bollywood movie.......2007-06-13

I loved this. It had small "cheesy" moments, but I could overlook them because as a whole the movie was wonderful.

At the beginning I believed that it was certainly going to be "behind the times", but it quickly progressed into a cute matchmaking story that I thought I had figured out. Then there was a twist. And THEN, just when I thought it was almost over - TWIST AGAIN!
This movie had humor, romance, drama, heartbreak, and thankfully a happily ever after. And I loved the musical/ dance parts as well.
Yes, I know I'm being a little vague, but I don't want to spoil it!
Suffice it to say that I am hooked. I will definitely be watching more from the Indian cinema genre.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Darn Good.......2007-03-21

I admit it, I was surprised at how good this movie was. This was my first bollywood movie ever, I have yet to see even Bride & Prejudice. It wasn't nearly as over the top as people told me it would be. I enjoyed Raj's antics, even though his incredible, pathetic, story about how he needed that last seat on the plane because his son Babloo was sick from a heart attack had me rolling my eyes with a groan. I was outright laughing in the school scene when Raj lived up to Adi's boasting and jumped from the roof of the school and then had to kick a soccer ball back up onto the roof. It's a good thing for Namrata that Raj really did love her, because she was so stupid sometimes and stubborn that many a man would have walked away. All in all, even though this movie was surprisingly long, at 2 hours and 46 minutes, It's well worth the time to watch it.

3 out of 5 stars low quality.......2007-01-10

I enjoy romantic movies, and I really enjoyed this one. But I consider that it was very low quality, bad editing, bad sound, bad acting.

5 out of 5 stars Memorable.......2006-06-25

I recommend this movie to anyone who likes a good, memorable laugh! It's suitable for the entire family. Abhishek does a fabulous job. The ways in which he deflects the interest of his potential brides are clever and oh-so hilarious! I still laugh at his encounters every time I have a chance to replay this movie. It's also a story of love and Aishwarya's acting is wonderful (not one of her best, best though). There's a twist in the movie and it really shows how versatile these two actors can be. The two make a great pair. I also recommend movies such as Dhaii Akshar Prem Ke, which stars both of them. Superb acting by Aishwarya (& Ajay Devgan) can be found in movies such as Dil De Chuke Sanaam. Abhishek movies I also recommend are Yuva (superb all around cast acting in this movie, but not suitable for children as there are violence and sexy scenes) and Bunti Aur Babli (another comedy in which there's an appearance by Aishwarya).

Here's a perfect movie for kids, who never seem to tire of John Hughes's sure-fire slapstick formula. Working yet another variation on his mammoth 1990 hit, writer-producer Hughes (regarded by many as Hollywood's antichrist) strands a youngster in his own home with the chicken pox in this 1997 retelling. While his parents go to work, he sees a team of burglars invading the neighborhood houses; in fact, they're spies, looking for a toy containing a stolen microchip. The inevitability of the finale--one kid holding off four professionals with toys and garden tools--will do nothing to lessen the amusement of youngsters, who love to see the bad guys get creamed. Adults may pause at the sadistic nature of some of Hughes's pranks, but kids will eat up the image of one of their own outwitting all the adults. --Marshall Fine

Description

A band of international crooks has hidden a military computer chip inside a toy car, but an airport mix-up lands it in the hands of whiz-kid Alex Pruitt (Alex D. Linz) who's home alone with the chicken pox in a quiet Chicago suburb. When the criminals zero in on Alex's house with their high-tech gadgetry, madness and mayhem kick into high gear as the pint-sized hero defends himself against the bumbling bad guys -armed with an outrageous array of ambushes and booby traps!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Mean spirited and unfunny........2007-03-20

In the first 2 films, the kid was left alone by accident. In this one, it is deliberate. That's right, the mother leaves her small child home alone by choice. The kid is an evil genius type who has more toys than the Mythbusters. His traps are meant to maim or kill the so-called bad guys, who are so unbelievably stupid it is difficult to accept they would be smart enough to steal a computer chip. Speaking of the chip -- something like that would fail if it were handled by so many people; it has to be in an anti-static protective bag, not in a toy car. But most Hollywood types don't seem to know anything about computers. Or the range of a toy car's remote control. Or a TV remote control. Or how a small child could put barbells on a roof. Or move a 4x8 sheet of plywood...or.... In short, just about everything in this movie stretches credulity beyond even cartoon violence. This also proves that to pull off this concept you need a cast of people with talent. The original 2 films work only because of a good cast. It certainly isn't the writing. Left to the writing alone, this type of film just fails. It also leaves one with a sense of mean-spiritedness at the heart of the film. And that is because it is such an unnecessary sequel with ties to the originals in name only.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Bunch So Far.......2007-02-02

Out of the first three that I have viewed, this is by far and away my vote for best. The lead actor is marvelous, so genuine and so expressive. The plot carries on the Home Alone theme: parents leaving young boy alone, burglars attack, boy's ingenuity foils them, siblings nasty to the nth.

Here, Home Alone goes high tech, on the burglars part and on the defender boy's as well. From outset, scene is set with defense part chip that gets mistakenly taken at airport security and ends up in young boy's remote car, which thus becomes center point in the plot.

The defensive measures this Alex takes up are what makes this one so good! From aid of talkin parrot to yarn wound electrified wire, this one caused great laughter.

Such great family viewing pleasure!

4 out of 5 stars GO ALEX!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-01-25

Wow! The Booby Traps were even more severe and a lot better!! Although I really miss Harry and Marv
PROS-
-Booby Traps are better
-Number of criminals extend

BAD-
-Acting is half terrible
-This movie has a totally different cast

What I don't understand is the storyline. IT'S DIFFERENT!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Our Christmas favorite, kids are funny........2007-01-10

This is our favorite movie for the holidays or when it is snowing and cold outside. This is the best of the Home alone movies. I like this kid better than the first kid. His acting is really good. I mean yo uknow that a kid cannot do some of the things that they have him do, but it is very funny to see what this kid does, some of the things that you see being done you cannot figure out what he is doing. This one does not involve the kid being left behind for the holiday, much more believable series of events.

5 out of 5 stars Funnier!!.......2007-01-07

The animated pooch detective returns in Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, which packs a wealth of ghostly villains from the Saturday morning cartoon into one movie. When Mystery Inc. opens a museum exhibit of costumes of their old foes, a new masked foe appears and steals everything--and before you know it, all the costumes come to life, chasing Fred (Freddie Prinze Jr., Head Over Heels), Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar, TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Velma (Linda Cardellini, Freaks and Geeks), Shaggy (Matthew Lillard, SLC Punk), and the computer-animated Scooby Doo all over Coolsville. It's no better or worse than the first Scooby Doo movie. Watching live-action scenes that you've previously seen in two dimensions is vaguely uncanny; it's like deja vu turned inside out. Also featuring the weirdly unsynchronized lips of Alicia Silverstone (Clueless), Seth Green (Austin Powers), and Peter Boyle (Young Frankenstein). --Bret Fetzer

I just love it! I am a Scooby-Doo fan.

5 out of 5 stars JASON'S MOM.......2007-02-24

Great movie for all ages. Our family realy enjoyed this movie. Highly recomend!

4 out of 5 stars I Enjoyed It More Then the First.......2007-02-22

It's a big night in Coolsville. A museum is opening and its main exhibit is a tribute to the Mysteries, Inc. gang featuring the costumes of many of the creatures they've defeated over the years. Naturally, everyone is on hand for the opening. But things don't go smoothly. Much to everyone's shock, the Pterodactyl Ghost comes to life and starts flying around the museum. When Shaggy (Matthew Lillard) and Scooby-Doo try to stop it, they make a mess of the museum.

Fred (Freddie Prinz, Jr.), Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar), and Velma (Linda Cardellini) immediately spring into action trying to figure out how and why the monster came to life. The obvious suspect is Old Man Wickles (Peter Boyle), a former foe just released from jail.

When more of their former foes come to life, the townspeople turn against the gang. Can they stop the monsters, stay alive, and solve the mystery?

I haven't seen many of the cartoon episodes, but this movie actually made me wish I had. These monsters were creepy yet cool at the same time. Overall, the story was much better then the original movie with several viable suspects. Shaggy and Scooby attempt to shed their goofy image and gather actual clues, but on the whole, the gang even works together this time. Once again, Matthew Lillard and Linda Cardellini are the standouts of the cast, while Seth Green and Alicia Silverstone are great additions this time around.

This sequel should appeal more to fans of the series. While forgettable, it's also good for a couple hours entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars better than the first.......2007-02-14

A word of warming even though this movie got a PG rating I do not recommend it two any one you should be at least 12 or older. The reason why is because grow up as a little kid and not being able to tell real from fake well I had a lot of nightmares from watching some of the earlier scoby do movies witch ame out in the mid 1990s and early. To be more specific the movies in the cartoon series that gave me nighmares were Zoombie Island, Reluctant Werewolf, Boo Brothers, and the Ghoal school. In this movie and evil villian capture the costume of some the gangs famous foe from the past and turns them into relive monster including Captain Cutlers, ghost and the 10000 volt ghost. If you like this and you I also recommend Scoody Doo I

5 out of 5 stars Much MUch MUCh MUCH better than the first! .......2007-02-03

I liked this one better than the first one because it's funnier and a much better plot. And plus It's got most of the villains from the cartoon on it like... Pterodactyl, The Black Knight Ghost, The Skeleton Men, Zombie, Captain Cutler, Miner 49er, The Tar Monster, The 10,000 Volt Ghost, and The Cotton Candy Glob which was not on the cartoon... I wonder why. Now the person who brings all those villains to life is an evil masked figure who could be Dr. Johnathin Jacobo, Old Man Wickles, or Patrick. And all of the costumes are in a museum which Patricks made with the exhibits. It's up to Mystery Inc to stop this masked figure and his monsters. And this time Fred is a better leader, Daphne is tougher, Velma is smarter, Shaggy is Shaggier, and Scooby is Scoobier. YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS FILM!

"I would've gotten away with it if weren't for you meddling kids!" Equal parts remake and spoof, this tongue-in-cheek live-action resurrection finds the old Saturday-morning-cartoon gang reunited to investigate the zombie teens of a haunted amusement park. Frantic action and big-screen special effects stand in for logic, but for a while it makes for a spirited send-up. Freddie Prinze Jr., under a blond hairdo and an ascot, turns Fred into a preening pretty boy, and Sarah Michelle Gellar plays with her own Buffy image as eternal damsel-in-distress Daphne (in magenta mini-dress and maxi-boots, no less), but this show belongs to gangly Matthew Lillard, who is the adenoidal beatnik Shaggy. His loyal-to-the-end friendship with the computer-animated Scooby-Doo is the most convincing relationship in the whole two-dimensional goof. Some of the supernatural nasties may be scary for young kids and the humor careens from winking self-awareness to Scooby doo-doo gags, but otherwise this is as harmless as a Saturday-morning chapter and as substantial as a Scooby snack. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2007-04-22

The Mystery Inc gang and Scooby Doo have gone their seperate ways, though a mystery by way of Spooky Island brings them back together. Something's happening to the holidaying college students there, something's changing them. Independently, then together, the gang works to solve the mystery, which turns out to be a little more real, and a little more mysterious, then they'd hoped...

It's pretty enjoyable and colourful, even if its not quite the same as the TV series. Scooby Doo is animated pretty nicely and Matthew Lilard is right on as Shaggy. The audio commentary with the cast of the Scooby gang is pretty entertaining too. Interesting stuff. Worth a look for Scooby Doo fans, I thought.

3 out of 5 stars Scooby-Doo, Where are You?.......2007-02-11

I have a confession to make. I didn't grow up watching cartoons. As a result, I've only seen a handful of episodes of this show in my entire life. Yet, I was curious about the live action version, so I finally sat down and watched it.

The Mystery Inc. Gang is in the middle of another exciting case. Yet when they've captured the ghost, something strange happens. A microphone is trust into Fred's face (Freddie Prinze, Jr.) and suddenly the gang starts fighting. Velma (Linda Cardellini) is tired of Fred taking all the credit. And Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is absolutely sick of always being the damsel in distress. Only Shaggy (Matthew Lillard) and Scooby-Doo are interested in staying together. And so the gang breaks up.

Some time later, they are brought back together by Mandavarious (Rowan Atkinson). He owns Spooky Island, a hip college resort. Unfortunately, his guests are arriving as normal college students and leaving as zombies. Will the Mystery Inc. Gang be able to reconcile to solve the case?

The problem with taking a half hour program and making it a full length movie is the added time. The writers tried to deal with that my adding the conflict within the group. However, so little time is spent on it that it feels like an after thought. Instead, the movie spends most of its time focusing on the story, which makes sense for the most part. There's a twist at the end that I thought was just plain weird, but maybe that's just me. Matthew Lillard is the standout member of the cast. His Shaggy perfectly brought the cartoon character to life. And the computer animated Scooby, while looking like a cartoon was believable.

There are some parts that might frighten small children, but most will be ok with it. It's a mixed bag, at least for this non-fan of the series.

5 out of 5 stars I love it.......2006-10-27

By this point in my life, it's pretty much a given that many of the things I like are going to be criticized. Many times *severely* criticized. I have to teach myself to deal with it and move on.

Scooby Doo is a really fantastic movie. I don't feel bad at all for liking it. I'm a 25 year old man and I think it's the best family movie money can buy.

I simply loved the idea of having an animated Scooby Doo living in a world of real people. That's what this movie is- Shaggy, Daphne and everyone else can't really SEE Scooby because Scooby isn't real. It's the main reason the movie is so special, for goodness sake. You simply couldn't have it any other way. Do you think throwing in a real dog would work? No, it wouldn't, unless you found a real dog who can talk (and don't try convincing me one of those "I love you" dogs are really talking because you know darn well those are the *only* words they can say).

I believe the movie was intended for EVERYONE. The picture is pleasing on the eyes, and the plot moves forward like a typical Scooby Doo mystery from the cartoon series. I really don't understand the problem people have with this movie. It's understandable if you're not a fan of Scooby Doo in the first place, but if you are, the film is exactly what you'd expect.

This movie will go down as a classic to me. If you're along for the ride, jump in my boat.

1 out of 5 stars By Far One Of The Worst Live Action Tributes To An Animated Classic.......2006-09-24

I wasn't going to watch this period, but tonight on the ABC Family Channel this was on, so I'm like o.k. let's see why I wasn't up to watching this. I got my answer rather quickly. Mind you it was a clever attempt to show that it wasn't all cartoon pie in the sky. It starts with the Mystery Machine group Velma, Fred, Shaggy, Daphnie, and Scooby all going thier separate ways as a t.v. show wanting to be cancelled. It also showed that the five all had thier personal isssues with each other, and decide it's for the best to just go thier own ways. They are all brought back together by an anonymous person to solve the mystery on Spooky Island. I found Spooky Island to be a pathetc cross between Adventureland, and Pleasure Island at Walt Disney World. This is where the clever attempt starts to unravel as you see the group trying to solve the mystery, and along the way they pick up Scrappy Doo, and depending on your sense of humor this may be funny as Daphnie gets upset with Scrappy Doo because he peed on her, but to me the line Fred uses about Scrappy marking his territory on Daphnie was without a doubt a feeble attempt to rescue this movie from absolute ruin. The special effects were also out of place here for this being a cartoon for kids up to 8-9 years old to have special effects that are more geared at an older audience was improper. I think I know as to why the group Sugar Ray ended up killing thier careers as they performed in this movie, and then the group ends up turning into monsters. It would go even further to where Fred, Velma, and Daphnie all turn into monsters as well. I couldn't go further as the movie was just that bad. I found the fact that Shaggy actually fell in love with a girl as the closest thing positive that I could find about this movie, but I feel that he should date Velma though because she's more about sense, and would be the close friend that Shaggy needs that doesn't walk on all fours. You got me I watched it, and now that I have I can say without a shadow of a doubt "IT SUCKS".

1 out of 5 stars Scooby-DUD!.......2006-08-06

Loud, obnoxious and generally unfunny live-action adaption of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon.

After watching this film I realized that the legendary 80's mega-flop "Howard the Duck" was almost twenty years ahead of its time. There's very little difference between Scooby-Doo (and most of the other current films of this type) and that classic bomb! Perhaps the only difference is that today this garbage is actually successful and is even considered "sequel worthy". Also, Just to be fair to Howard the Duck, at least that movie had the visual appeal of Lea Thompson.

If your idea of fun is bombastic, poorly produced special effects, a crappy modern soundtrack and a plethora of booger and fart jokes then this is the film for you! Certainly worth checking out if you're a fan of the Scooby-Doo character, but just be prepared to end up wanting two hours of your life back!

The sequel deserves the exact same review.

No one tries very hard in Big Momma's House, so your enjoyment of this Martin Lawrence vehicle pretty much depends on how much amusement you're able to derive from a guy dressed up as a very ample woman. The setup is of the eye-rolling, only-in-Hollywood nature: Lawrence, as detective Malcolm Turner, is after a killer, and apparently the only way to capture him is to pose as the bad guy's ex-girlfriend's grandmother, who--the film cannot stress this point too much--is quite large.

Apparently, Sherry (Nia Long), the young woman in question--she's as attractive as Big Momma is, well, you know--is none too bright, for she falls for Malcolm's ruse, which of course ostensibly amuses mainly because it's so transparent. She at least has an excuse--she hasn't seen Big Momma in two years--but Big Momma's oblivious friends must be functional morons. Screenwriters Darryl Quarles and Don Rhymer didn't tax themselves very much, as they have Malcolm-as-Big-Momma going through fairly predictable motions--botching a meal and delivering a baby unconventionally (Big Momma's a midwife), but ruling at basketball and self- defense and protecting Sherry while trying vainly not to flirt with her. Paul Giamatti is wasted as Malcolm's partner; director Raja Gosnell's clunky sense of comic rhythm is bewildering, because he used to be an editor (he brought a similar lack of magic to Home Alone 3).

Lawrence won't have anyone forgetting Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon in Some Like It Hot, Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie, or Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire anytime soon. Big Momma's House benefits mainly by being first to the marketplace ahead of Eddie Murphy's The Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps; Murphy's work in prosthetics is far more accomplished, versatile, and funny. --David Kronke

Description

Disguise is the limit. "Martin Lawrence brings down the house" (E! Online) as crafty FBI agent Malcolm Turner who's willing to go through thick and thin in order to catch an escaped prisoner. "Nia Long is captivating" (Checkout.com) as Sherry, the con's sexy former flame - she might have the skinny on millions in stolen loot, and she's headed for Georgia to lay low for a while. That's enough to send Malcolm deep undercover as Big Momma, an oversized, overbearing Southern granny with an attitude as tough as her pork chops. The result is an outrageous comedy of epic proportions, filled with nonstop laughs and plenty of action!

5 out of 5 stars Action, Romance & Funny Movie.......2007-08-13

If you like action, this movie has it; it you like romance, this movie has it; and if you like humor, this movie has it. Martin Lawrence portrays the comedy to the hilt, and, surprisingly, he also does an good job of being a suave man pursuing his woman. Nia Long is a beautiful and excellent actress in this film making the romance part so adorable. Terrence Howard's role was done well too. He really can be a scarey character when he needs to portray it. Altogether this film is excellent on so many levels and a must see for anyone who likes the combination of action, romance and humor.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT VIEWING.......2007-05-26

This is just down my street hilarious and great family viewing. highly recommended. Loved every minute.

4 out of 5 stars family watch.......2007-01-28

This is a great film for kids and big kids! Its just simple humour but had me in stitches more than once, good characters and story. Good family viewing.

4 out of 5 stars Big Momma Doubtfire!.......2006-11-13

Big Momma's House is far more entertaining than some of the reviews would indicate. Yes, the plot is almost impossible: an FBI agent who is forced to disguise himself as a very large grandmother, in order to track down an escaped killer.

But the film has so many enjoyable scenes. Who can forget lovely Sherry (Nia Long), asking if Big Momma (Martin Lawrence) has another flashlight? The makeup and body padding make Martin Lawrence an awesomely agile grandmother. His basketball back-dunk is something we would all love to see grandmothers be able to do. It's kind of like when we wish we had super powers.

I can't spoil it for you, because there are just so many memorable scenes: like detective Malcolm caught in a tree branch as he slowly sags out of his "granny suit." Or when he somersaults, breaking through the front window, shyly commenting, "I forgot my keys." Or when the reverend (Cedric the Entertainer) discourages Big Momma from talking too much about what happened in the back of an El Camino.

OK--it's kind of kitsch--but it's a whole lot of fun. It will not be considered the greatest movie of the twentyfirst century, but it is an escapist romantic comedy and lots of fun. If you liked films like Mrs. Doubtfire, you'll really like this. Relax and enjoy it.

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad diversion. . . ........2006-09-04

I'm not usually a fan of movies in this genre, but Big Momma's House is not as bad a diversion as some might have you believe. If you've ever witnessed someone doing or saying something so stupid, low and crass that you had to laugh in spite of yourself, then this movie fits the bill. One of the strongest draws of this movie is its unusually strong cast of talented actors, who make the most out of what they are given. Like most comedies in this vein, you have to suspend your disbelief much of the time: the plot of this situational comedy is highly improbable, but sometimes quite funny. Martin Lawrence won't make you forget Eddie Murphy's star turn in the First "Nutty Professor" remake, but he does have some surprisingly amusing moments impersonating "Big Momma" while in pursuit of a criminal who is on the lam. Nia Long, his love interest, is as cool and ravishing as ever. Ella Mitchell gamely plays the real Big Momma and, best of all, Anthony Anderson is uproariously funny as a bumbling security guard who moonlights giving self-defense classes to elderly women in the neighborhood community center. As most reviewers here have indicated, "Big Momma's House" is definitely not worth agonizing about. It's the film equivalent of pleasantly disposable junk food. It could have been much worse.

Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo, the sexiest adults in Hollywood, anchor Yours, Mine and Ours, an enjoyably traditional family film. Frank Beardsley (Quaid, In Good Company, The Rookie), a Coast Guard admiral, runs his brood of eight kids like a military squad; Helen North (Russo, Tin Cup, Get Shorty), a designer, keeps her multicultural family of ten together with a more free and creative hand. The two run into each other and rekindle their high school romance, getting married before the kids even have a chance to meet. The two families naturally experience a bit of culture clash. After squabbles, disputes, and outright fights, the kids agree on one thing: They have to split up Frank and Helen so they can return to their old lives. Yours, Mine and Ours doesn't hold any surprises, but after a rushed beginning, the movie settles into a series of brisk, cheerful skirmishes among the kids and some truly sweet interludes between Quaid and Russo, who handle their mature romance with graceful, seasoned aplomb. This straightforward movie cruises by on energy and enthusiasm, and sometimes, that's enough for a good time. --Bret Fetzer

Product Description

When Frank Beardsley (Dennis Quaid), a widower of 8 children runs into his high school sweetheart, Helen North (Rene Russo), it's as if thirty years never passed! Helen, also a widow with ten kids of her own that include the six she and her husband adopted, feels the attraction as well. It's no wonder they rush into marriage without telling their kids. True love can conquer all—right? Unfortunately for Frank and Helen, the families don't mesh quite as easily as the newlyweds had hoped. They probably should have seen the culture clash coming: the disciplined Beardsleys run things by the book; for the energetic and vivacious Norths, there is no book. Helen's kids aren't pleased about moving and sharing rooms with a bunch of uptight strangers. Frank's children have nothing in common with the Norths. Since both sets of kids aren't happy, they devise a plan to undermine the marriage and team up to plot the breakup. East meets west as the two families finds a way to work together—in order to separate. Just when it appears that the kids have succeeded, they realize they like each other despite their differences—they don't want their families to split up! Can they save Frank and Helen's marriage after they so brilliantly split them up? It's up to Frank and Helen!

2 out of 5 stars An Inferior Remake!.......2007-08-11

I wouldn't consider this a really bad film. But I couldn't fault it for not trying. It did have some potential. The updated story now takes place in New London, Connecticut; not San Francisco. And, there are some adopted kids of all ethnicities, which made perfect sense in this day and age. The problem lies in the one thing that makes all films like this faulter, the screnplay. There are very few laughs aside from trying to make the dad look like a complete imbecile in slapstick moments. Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo struggle to put the film together. All in all, this was a huge disappointment. You're better off with the Lucille Ball/Henry Fonda original.

3 out of 5 stars a better than average remake.......2007-07-16

If you go according to the reviews here, its obvious that people either really like or really hate this movie with very little in-between. I guess I am going against the grain with my review. I might very well have rated Yours mine and Ours at 4 stars if it weren't for the missing courtship between the mom and dad that made the original so much fun, and the fact that every time something funny was to happen it usually involved paint, paste, slime or some combination thereof. There are many slapstick type moments that aren't all necessary for this movie to have been funny, and yet even with it's slight shortcomings there is a great deal to like about the film. there is more development of the kids hating each other and a plot where they all join forces to try and break their parents up so they can go back to the lives they lived before their parents' marriage. The acting is all over the map with some kids seemingly delivering their lines off cue cards and others who seem to have some real talent and the direction is fast and frenzied. if you're on the search for a fun family movie with a HUGE amount of kids, Yours Mine and Ours is a better choice than either of the new cheaper by the Dozen movies.

1 out of 5 stars The Bag Lady Bunch.......2007-06-30

Dennis Quaid plays a stereotypical Coast Guard Admiral who demands that his family always be organized and "ship-shape." He also happens to be a widower with 8 children. For his newest command, he moves back to his home town, where he meets up with his high school sweetheart (Rene Russo). Russo is a free-wheeling designer of fashion bags; she also happens to be a single parent to 10 kids (some of hers are adopted from different cultures, giving her family a very Angelina Jolie vibe). The couple rekindles their romance and hastily marries, much to the dismay of their children. The new family moves into a dilapidated lighthouse, which they soon have looking like something out of Martha Stewart "Living" or Pottery Barn; in other words, completely synthetic, which also sums up just about everything from this rather boring family comedy.

The plot concerns the family trying to resolve their differences - his kids are used discipline and structure, whereas her kids keep a pig in the house and play loud instruments. Not surprisingly, the kids have conflict and decide to break up their parents. To do so, they have to work together; will they succeed or will their plotting make them a family? (*rolls eyes*) Unfortunately, the laughs are few and far between, and come mostly from Linda Hunt as their housekeeper. The direction is clumsy, and the writing relies on lame slapstick and cloying from the kids. I didn't enjoy this movie at all, and I cannot imagine that anyone would except possibly very young children (6 years or younger). The movie is well-intentioned and Quaid and Russo are fairly likeable, but "Yours, Mine and Ours" fails in every aspect.

3 out of 5 stars A cute flick that children will like........2007-06-21

The best way to describe this movie would be to compare it to The Parent Trap and Cheaper By the Dozen. If you enjoyed both of these films, you might like Yours, Mine & Ours.

What's this movie about? Basically, Frank and Helen were high school sweathearts. When they meet again years later, they fall in love all over again and decide to get married. The problem? The two of them have almost 20 kids altogether and they parent very differently. Frank is more strict while Helen is more care free. Another problem? The couple get married before the kids could meet each other. The kids are forced to live together and agree that they must split up their parents. Will the marriage survive? You have to watch this movie to find out.

So what's to like about this movie? First, Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo star in this film and they do a superb job acting-wise. Second, there are some funny parts in the movie (that even adults will chuckle at). Third, kids will love this movie and may learn a thing or two while watching it.

And what's not to like? When I went to the theatre to watch this movie, I was completely under the impression that it was mostly made for kids. I was right. Although some adults will find this movie decent, I couldn't wait until the movie was over because I've "been there and done that" since I've already seen The Parent Trap and Cheaper By the Dozen. The storyline isn't anything I haven't seen and you know exactly what's going to happen in the end.

This movie was decent but nothing I haven't seen before. I'd only recommend this movie to kids as adults will most likely find it boring.

3 out of 5 stars The Brady Bunch x 3.......2007-06-04

Dennis Quaid plays Frank Beardsley, a 2-star admiral of the Coast Guard and a widower with 8 kids. Rene Russo is Helen North, a widow with 10 kids, 6 of them adopted.

Frank and Helen were high school prom king and queen. Somehow, after that, they've gone their own separate ways and married. Both of their spouses have passed away.

For the umpteenth time, the Beardsley relocate...but this time back into Frank's childhood hometown. It just so happens that there is a high school reunion coming up and Frank reunites with Helen. After a couple of nights together, Frank and Helen eloped...without telling their kids.

Now, Frank and Helen joined families...totally to 18 kids, 2 parents, a housekeeper and pets. Just imagine the chaos...especially with the kids not getting along together. Frank's kids are used to military commands and cleanliness. Helen's kids are used to being free with expression and space.

Funny and cute. However, some of it was a bit too cheesy, like with liquids (paint, etc.) spilling on top of people. If you like Nickelodeon, then this is for you.

4 out of 5 stars My first true Bollywood experience really opened up my eyes (and ears).......2007-05-19

Before watching "Dil Se.." ("From the Heart") the closest I had come to seeing a Bollywood movie was "Bride and Prejudice," which had the virtue of being in English. However, if you are not reading the subtitles because the characters are speaking (and singing) in Hindi, then it does not really count. I picked "Dil Se.." for my first true Bollywood experience for the simple reason that it has the song "Chaiyya Chaiyya" in it. I first heard the song in the opening sequence of Spike Lee's "Inside Man," and finally downloaded it. Discovering that it was originally in this 1998 film I decided to find out what the catchy song is all about. The joke ended up being on me because watching the movie only gave me a vague inkling on that score and I had to head to the Internet to satisfy my curiosity.

I remember hearing that the great thing about Bollywood movies was that when you went to the theater and wanted to see a musical or a romance or an action film or any other genre, that is exactly what you were going to see regardless of which theater you walked into. Now I know what they meant. Amarkanth Varma (Shahrukh Khan) runs into Meghna (Manisha Koirala), and is immediately smitten by her. But they go their separate ways and he bemoans the shortest love story of all time before the film launches into the big "Chaiyya Chaiyya" production number:

He whose head is in the shadow of love
Will have heaven beneath his feet
Whose head is in the shadow of love
Walk in the shadow.
Walk in heaven, walk in the shadow.

There's a friend who is like a sweet fragrance,
Whose words are like poetry
Who is my evening, my night, my existence.
That friend is my beloved!

Amar works for All India Radio and has been sent from New Delhi to the northern provinces where he starts finding out about a separatist group engaging in acts of terrorism to secure a free and independent state. When it comes to politics Amar knows nothing, and he gets quite an education in that regard in this movie. I have only a general understanding of the disputed areas of Kashmir and Jammu, and it seems to be that the film is using the politics as a dramatic backdrop rather than actually taking a stand on the issues (the plague on both their houses would be another way in which "Dil Se.." is reminiscent of "Romeo & Juliet"). Meanwhile, Amar's obsession for Meghna is failing to make much of an impression on the mysterious woman, who hints at a tragic past that forestalls the possibility of love. The assumption that the political and romantic elements of the film are intertwined is correct, but like Amar we have to wait for things to be spelled out for us before it is clear how everything comes together. There is also your standard love triangle complication when Amar becomes engaged to Preity (Preity Zinta), who seems to be everything that Meghna is not, in ways both good and bad.

That is the basic set up of the film, which leads to fist fights and explosions, shouting and weeping, singing and dancing, and the proverbial much much more. There are only five songs in "Dil Se..," but each is a major production and since they are not translated how they add to or comment upon the action is completely lost on me (even now that I have sought out translations of the songs on the Internet). They almost function more like commercials, providing breaks in the narrative, and there is a sense in which the story would be more riveting without the musical digressions. It would also be a lot less fun, which is of some consequence in a film that runs 2 hours and 43 minutes. I do not know how representative of Bollywood director Mani Ratnam's film might be, and I am only now become aware of the requisite stages from "hub" (attraction) to "maut" (death) are key to the formula, which only tells me that the happy ever after ending of "Bride & Prejudice" may well be another aberration from the Bollywood model. Just do not ask me what American movie most reminds me of this entertaining conglomerate of cinematic elements because I seriously do not have a clue.

3 out of 5 stars Regarding Quality of DVD.......2007-03-30

The delay in the subtitles is maddening - by the end of the film you've learned the timing and can sort out who says what relatively well. I agree with the other reviewer that was dismayed with the lack of subtitles for the musical numbers - a great loss for those of us who aren't fluent in the spoken dialects.

Sadly, this is the worst transfer to video/dvd of a modern film I've ever seen - there were points where the sound cut out, and there were spots and lines on the film as though it had been reeled a thousand times. (This isn't a criticism typical of Indian/Bollywood films, as I've seen many others...)

Most of the dvd menus don't work (the main one does though, thankfully), but I was able to get around by using the return and menu buttons on my remote.

All that said, the film is captivating. The 'embedded music videos' are enthralling - the film is worth buying for them alone. Get the soundtrack, too!!

3 stars is for an average between the quality of the dvd and the quality of the film.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing like I expected.......2007-01-13

I sat down to watch this thinking it would be a stereotypical Bollywood flic. I was way off in this assumption, to my pleasant surprise. I was once told that Indians hate movies with sad endings. The ending here could be considered happy or sad, it is debatable. I was sickened at one point, but the movie was also very beautiful, contained terrific music and dancing, an interesting story line, and it touched on some socio-political-historical issues.

It was musically, theatrically, and emotionally stunning. In my opinion this is a must see movie for a mature audience. You have to have patience for a movie this long, worthwhile for the introspective.

1 out of 5 stars A Bad Bad Movie...... A true waster of time.......2006-09-07

Ok, so keeping the fact that the songs in this movie kick butt, which standalone take only about 30-60 minutes to listen too, the movie (other than the not so surprise, "surprise ending) is an absolute dud.
First of all, the movie comes with an in your face, this is what we think the facts should be about the history of the disputed area of Jammu and Kashmir and don't really care what the truth might be. As offensive as that might be to people whose lives have actually been affected by the stubbornness of india over the dispute, we will let it go and move on.
Secondly, it seems that the writers, director, producer all lack the balls to actually say that this is the matter of Kashmir. Until the mention of "Cargill" comes you can't be sure where this is happening in india. I mean, let's face it... with 26 states and 21 insurgencies the greatest "democracy" in the world can't really boast a country with peace and harmony and hence it really becomes a wild guess game for some time in the movie to figure out who actually are the "Terrorists/Freedom Fighters". Even in the movie at points this paranoia of the people shows where the officer of intelligence asks "Who do you work for" and then names 4 insurgencies with fluency ;).
Third, and kinda tying into the first, the fact of the matter is that up till ~1960 the government of india (Including Nehru) claim that Kashmir is a disputed area and a referendum in accordance with the UN resolution should be held. The Movie decides to forget this fact in the beginning by shahrukh saying "They are my countryman, they are just a little mad". My dear all, truth of the matter is that Kashmir is no more a part of india than Bangladesh is a part of Pakistan. So the Kashmiris are not indian and they are not "Just Mad". They are beyond pissed and want their right to choose delivered.
Lastly, there seems to be confusion throughout the movie about the religion of the girl. She does some pooja paat like movements in the mundir like place, but also is on her way to becoming a shaheed. Now one true indication of a true Muslim, he/she will never bow to anyone but God Almighty.
Of course, this review would be incomplete if I don't mention shahrukhs acting which in its sameness from one movie to another is as unique as Motorola razor these days. Not to mention the blatant disregard by the director in establishing any character at all. One minute the girl is covering all her body, the next she is showing her belly. In the beginning shahrukh is getting his butt beet by the same guys who he suddenly and with some excellent moves beets up at the end.
All in all I must say that the waste of time that I felt after watching this movie was so great that I promised myself that if I can save anyone else from such a severe feeling of loss, I will attempt it. So here it is, I hope it helps y'all.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting story, great dance sequence........2006-09-06

While not much of a fan of Bollywood movies, I got this DVD after hearing the music in the opening credits of the Hollywood movie "Inside Man". The music is catchy, so I looked it up on the web and found that it was from this movie.

The song, "Chaiyya Chaiyya", has an excellent rhythm and wonderful sounding lyrics (although I don't understand the language). But the dance scene on the train is nothing short of incredible. The energy of Shahrukh Khan and his obvious enthusiasm along with an excellent job of filming and superb editing make the entire scene a joy to watch. While the video quality falls short of Hollywood standards, the the music sound quality is excellent (especially if you have a Dolby digital sound with a subwoofer).

As for the rest if the DVD, I found the story to be absorbing enough to maintain my interest through out the entire 2 hours and 40 minutes. There are
