An impressively rigorous, unsentimental, and harrowing look at combat during World War II, Band of Brothers follows a company of airborne infantry--Easy Company--from boot camp through the end of the war. The brutality of training takes the audience by increments to the even greater brutality of the war; Easy Company took part in some of the most difficult battles, including the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the failed invasion of Holland, and the Battle of the Bulge, as well as the liberation of a concentration camp and the capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest. But what makes these episodes work is not their historical sweep but their emphasis on riveting details (such as the rattle of a plane as the paratroopers wait to leap, or a flower in the buttonhole of a German soldier) and procedures (from military tactics to the workings of bureaucratic hierarchies). The scope of this miniseries (10 episodes, plus an actual documentary filled with interviews with surviving veterans) allows not only a thoroughness impossible in a two-hour movie, but also captures the wide range of responses to the stress and trauma of war--fear, cynicism, cruelty, compassion, and all-encompassing confusion. The result is a realism that makes both simplistic judgments and jingoistic enthusiasm impossible; the things these soldiers had to do are both terrible and understandable, and the psychological price they paid is made clear. The writing, directing, and acting are superb throughout. The cast is largely unknown, emphasizing the team of actors as a whole unit, much like the regiment; Damian Lewis and Ron Livingston play the central roles of two officers with grit and intelligence. Band of Brothers turns a vast historical event into a series of potent personal experiences; it's a deeply engrossing and affecting accomplishment. --Bret Fetzer

This mini-series is a must have for anyone who enjoys war history. I have watched it through three times and still catch new details in each episode. The extras are very interesting and add a lot to the overall enjoyment of the DVD's.

Just what you would expect from Amazon... mine came with a little bend on the metallic case, but.. hey, it might have been a bullet.

5 out of 5 stars God Bless Easy Company.......2007-08-27

"Band of Brothers" is an epic production. If you love America and all that we stand for(or stood for) you cannot possibly watch this without feeling like we have to find a better way to reward our veterans.

Although some characters may have been romanticised, the story depicts what history has already shown... that Easy Company accomplished an amazing feat that most could only dream of.

God bless the Easy Company

If you ever read a book ever again please make it, "The Biggest Brother: The life of Major Dick Winters".... you'll thank me!!!

3 out of 5 stars Band of Brothers DVD collectors set.......2007-08-24

The movie/series itself is absolutely fantastic! I highly recommend it. The problem is the packaging. The DVD's must roll around a little during shipping. The first set we got was scratched. We did not see the scratch until after opening and trying to play it. Amazon was very nice and efficient and replaced with a new one ASAP. The second one came with the tin dented and a DVD scratched. We fixed the box ourselves and this DVD did play ok so we just kept it. If the collectors tin was packaged better I would rate it a 5. This is not the fault of Amazon. It it the fault of the manufacturer. It needs to be packaged better.

Only Joel and Ethan Coen, the fraternal director and producer team behind art-house hits such as The Big Lebowski and Fargo and masters of quirky and ultra-stylish genre subversion, would dare nick the plot line of Homer's Odyssey for a comic picaresque saga about three cons on the run in 1930s Mississippi. Our wandering hero in this case is one Ulysses Everett McGill, a slick-tongued wise guy with a thing about hair pomade (George Clooney, blithely sending up his own dapper image) who talks his chain-gang buddies (Coen-movie regular John Turturro and newcomer Tim Blake Nelson) into lighting out after some buried loot he claims to know of. En route they come up against a prophetic blind man on a railroad truck, a burly, one-eyed baddie (the ever-magnificent John Goodman), a trio of sexy singing ladies, a blues guitarist who's sold his soul to the devil, a brace of crooked politicos on the stump, a manic-depressive bank robber, and--well, you get the idea. Into this, their most relaxed film yet, the Coens have tossed a beguiling ragbag of inconsequential situations, a wealth of looping, left-field dialogue, and a whole stash of gags both verbal and visual. O Brother (the title's lifted from Preston Sturges's classic 1941 comedy Sullivan's Travels) is furthermore graced with glowing, burnished photography from Roger Deakins and a masterly soundtrack from T-Bone Burnett that pays loving homage to American '30s folk styles--blues, gospel, bluegrass, jazz, and more. And just to prove that the brothers haven't lost their knack for bad-taste humor, we get a Ku Klux Klan rally choreographed like a cross between a Nuremberg rally and a Busby Berkeley musical. --Philip Kemp

Description

Disenchanted with the daily drudge of crushing rocks on a prison farm in Mississippi, the dapper, silver-tongued Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney, THE PERFECT STORM) busts loose. Except he's still shackled to his own chain-mates from the chain gang -- bad-tempered Pete (John Turturro, SUMMER OF SAM), and sweet, dimwitted Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson, HAMLET). With nothing to lose and buried loot to regain -- before it's lost forever in a flood -- the three embark on the adventure of a lifetime in this hilarious offbeat road picture. Populated with strange characters, including a blind prophet, sexy sirens, and a one-eyed Bible salesman (John Goodman, COYOTE UGLY), it's an odyssey filled with chases, close calls, near misses, and betrayal that will leave you laughing at every outrageous and surprising twist and turn.

5 out of 5 stars JUST TOO, TOO FUNNY!!!.......2007-09-14

This has got to be one of the funniest movies ever made. And one of the cleverest, too. Three guys escape from a chain gang, make a hit record, become "rock stars" of sorts without knowing it, escape an attack on them by the Ku Klux Klan, survive a flood, become honorary advisors to the Governor and live happily ever after. Along the way, one of them gets turned into a toad by sirens, gets squished, "comes back to life" where he, coincidentally, meets up with his fellow escapees in a movie theater which, just happens to be filled with inmates from the chain gang they escaped from. Interested? You should be. I have 2 young children and whenever we watch this movie they cannot stop laughing. Neither can I. Rent or buy this movie. Enjoy yourself!

This is a great movie! The plot is easy to follow and if you're well-read and a fan of Homer, the parallels will make you chuckle. The musical score is amazing and I bought it later just because I wanted to enjoy it outside of viewing the movie.

George Clooney and John Goodman make this movie shine.

5 out of 5 stars O Brother, Where Art Thou.......2007-08-15

What can anybody say about this movie! It's a real classic. Quirky, funny, sad, uplifting, delightful! Highlights the versatility of these fantastic actors, but it's not really George Clooney singing. A must-have for the film aficionado.

If you don't mind a heavy dose of schmaltz and sentiment, this romantic comedy has a gentle way of seducing you with its charms. While You Were Sleeping was the first starring role for Sandra Bullock after her blockbuster success in Speed. In a role that nicely emphasizes her easygoing appeal, Bullock is the reason the movie works at all. She plays Lucy Eleanor Moderatz, a Chicago Transit tollbooth clerk who's hopelessly smitten with a daily commuter, Peter Callaghan (Peter Gallagher). She saves the object of her affection from certain death after he's mugged and falls onto the train tracks. While Peter is in a coma, she lets his family believe that she is his fiancée, and surprisingly finds herself drawn to his brother (Bill Pullman), for whom the attraction is definitely mutual. How Lucy gets out of this amorous predicament is what makes this pleasant movie less predictable than its familiar ingredients would initially indicate. It's feel-good fluff, with characters and performances that keep you smiling through the drippy plot mechanics. --Jeff Shannon

Description

You'll fall in love with WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING, the hit romantic comedy that woke everyone up to adorable Sandra Bullock (SPEED, A TIME TO KILL). As Lucy, a lonely subway worker, she becomes smitten with a handsome stranger (Peter Gallagher -- MALICE). But when she saves his life after he's been mugged and fallen into a coma, his hilariously offbeat family mistakes her for his fiancee! Soon, the mix-ups escalate as Lucy fabricates a life between herself and a man she's never met! And when Lucy falls for his charming brother (Bill Pullman -- INDEPENDENCE DAY) the situation really gets uproarious as she's forced to make a choice between the two!

5 out of 5 stars Good Show.......2007-08-26

This is a great family show, especially for the Christmas season. You will watch over and over again. It is a Cinderella-type show. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite movies!.......2007-08-23

Great movie! One of the best all time chick flicks. Great for a Friday night get-together with the girlfriends. I had it on VHS and just had to get it on DVD. Love it!

3 out of 5 stars Wholesome Holiday Fun.......2007-08-23

This is a really good holiday film-just what you need for the Christmas season! The film centers around a woman named Lucy(S. Bullock) who is completely alone for the holidays. Lucy is in love with Peter, but it is from afar- really far-they have never met. So, lonely Lucy has no love, no real friends, and works every holiday because she is the only Metro employee without a family. Fate takes a hand, however, and she ends up saving the life of her handsome stranger (Peter). At the hospital, Peter's family then mistakes her for the man's fiancee, and miscommunications abound. What could have been a really corny, screwball type comedy, is stopped by Bullock's portryal of Lucy. Lucy is so earnest that you do not question the idea that there was no way for her to clear up the misunderstanding with the stranger's family (who practically adopt her for the Christmas season). Lucy needed them and they needed her to bring them closer to their son, who had become estranged over the years. This warm and fuzzy story takes an interesting turn when the family's other son, Jack meets Lucy and Peter comes out of the hospital... There is almost "It's A Wonderful Life" message to this film, which totes "life doesn't turn always out the way you plan." Sometimes life is better - you're just the last one to realize it.

5 out of 5 stars Cute, cute, and cute!.......2007-08-19

While You Were Sleeping starring the adorable Sandra Bullock is still one of her best and most charming films to date. This film made Sandra a star and she is still as appealing to this day. This is the ultimate chick-flick, you got the sappy premise of girl who longs for boy, the annoying Bill Pullman, and the happily ever after, what more could you want? I highly recommend While You Were Sleeping, it will melt your wayward heart. Happy viewing!

"Remember, remember the fifth of November," for on this day, in 2020, the minds of the masses shall be set free. So says code-name V (Hugo Weaving), a man on a mission to shake society out of its blank complacent stares in the film V For Vendetta. His tactics, however, are a bit revolutionary to say the least. The world in which V lives is very similar to Orwell's totalitarian dystopia in 1984: after years of various wars, England is now under "big brother" Chancellor Adam Sutler (played by John Hurt, who ironically played Winston Smith in the movie 1984) whose party uses force and fear to run the nation. After gaining power, minorities and political dissenters were rounded up and removed; artistic and unacceptable religious works were confiscated. Cameras and microphones are littered throughout the land, and the people are perpetually sedated through the governmentally controlled media. Taking inspiration from Guy Fawkes, the 17th century co-conspirator of a failed attempt to blow up Parliament on November 5, 1605, V dons a Fawkes mask and costume and sets off to wake the masses by destroying the symbols of their oppressors, literally and figuratively. At the beginning of his vendetta, V rescues Evey (Natalie Portman) from a group of police officers and has her live with him in his underworld lair. It is through their relationship where we learn how V became V, the extremities of the party's corruption, the problems of an oppressive government, V's revenge plot and his philosophy on how to induce change.

Based on the popular graphic novel by Alan Moore, V For Vendetta's screenplay was written by the Wachowski Brothers (of The Matrix fame) and directed by their protégé, James McTeigue. Controversy and criticism followed the film since its inception, from the hyper-stylized use of anarchistic terrorism to overthrow a corrupt government and the blatant jabs at the current US political arena, to graphic novel fans complaining about the reconstruction of Alan Moore's original vision (Moore himself has dismissed the film). Many are valid critiques and opinions, but there's no hiding the message the film is trying to express: Radical and drastic events often need to occur in order to shake people out of their state of indifference in order to bring about real change. Unfortunately, the movie only offers a means with no ends, and those looking for answers may find the film stylish, but a bit empty. --Rob Bracco

5 out of 5 stars Already over 400 reviews here.......2007-09-15

As I started to write this review, I saw that there are already over 400 reviews of this film on this site. So why do I need to add mine? Because, I love this movie that's why!!! Great plot that is easy to follow. Great photography. This film looks great. Great supporting cast from the lead detective, the news anchors, the chancelor and all the rest. Wonderful. Then there's Natalie Portman. She could easily have become an over the top super heroine, but instead maintained her status as one of the common folk dealing with circumstances. She was terrific. Finally, when it comes to acting, Hugo Weaving who wears a mask through the whole film delivers a complex character, making him human, caring and frightening at the same time. He does it without the benefit of facial expressions, although through his body language you can imagine his expressions. Now there is an excellent piece of work. All of these fine performances are done in what is almost a comic book movie. V is a hero for the masses, almost a Batman against the establishment. I've seen this movie several times and have enjoyed it every time. This one goes beyond the action film. This one gives characters with depth. It does have a lot of violence in it and some of the fight scenes are of the Aeon Flux or Ultraviolet or Matrix variety, but still above average. This one is easy to recommend to others.

5 out of 5 stars Standing on its own I thought it was a fantastic movie........2007-09-12

This is one of my favorite all time movies. Its not designed for children as it doesnt contain that kind of hero. I cant think of any other movie so loved and hated at the same time! Politics aside I thought it was a very good movie and without a doubt is different then all the other movies out there. I can understand why people can hate this movie based on todays political environment but I feel its unjustified. This is a movie that will last the test of time and will be considered one of the greats 10 years from now.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie! Excellent HD-DVD.......2007-09-10

I don't know if you guys have priced HD-DVD's locally at places like Best Buy, but the prices at those retail stores are CRAZY! If you browse the HD-DVD's here on Amazon, you'll notice most are around $19.99. Well I went to best buy and the absolute cheapest one was $24.99 and most were $29.99 and up! You just can't go wrong with buying HD-DVD's at Amazon. And no i don't work for them....I've just already done the research...so you don't have too!

5 out of 5 stars George Orwell, 1984, Alan Moore, and V.......2007-09-10

I read the graphic novel of "V for Vendetta" when it was originally released in the mid 1980s. Right from the beginning, I could see that this was Alan Moore's homage to Orwell and "1984" - he was most likely inspired by the book as the title's date approached and Moore observed Thatcher's England and Reagan's America unfold. What an amazing story "V for Vendetta" told. Alan Moore saw that Fascism was still alive and well in the world of 1984 as it was in Orwell's Post WWII 1940s.

Jump forward 20 years, and we have a retelling of this amazing story, but this time on film instead of the comic panel. In this day and age of Terrorism, the fear of Terrorism, and the Fascist use of that fear, the story is more important than ever in Bush's America/World. Fear is the most powerful tool of the fascist as has been demonstrated in both the real world - Nazi Germany and Post 9/11 America - and in fiction - "1984" and "V for Vendetta". "V for Vendetta" capture's this by potraying a not-to-distant future where plague and terrorism have crippled the world and are cooped by the fearful conservative right (where all fascism is born as they are similar psychoses) to control the masses and "protect" the people.

Though Moore set "V" in his native England, 20 years after its writing it could have been set in Post 9/11 America where even treehugging is consider terrorism by the ruling administration. Yes, this film portrays a terrorist as the "good guy", but it actually delves deeper into the heart of all of us; and it challenges every one of us to stand up for ourselves BEFORE we would need to resort to acts of violence to safeguard our freedoms - or worse have to reclaim them. Watch this film to be inspired for what we have to loose, before it becomes what we have lost.

A final note on Alan Moore not endorsing the film...Moore doesn't endorse any of his works being made into film. But, I would like to think that he will see it and see his vision properly realized; this is what I saw in the film...his vision on screen (though I was disappointed that the musical numbers found in the graphic novel were missing!). With this film, I await "The Watchmen" even more.

4 out of 5 stars Natalie Portman.......2007-08-26

Natalie Portman with her best British ascent is great in this movie. Britian has become a fascist state in this tale of the future.

Halloween is one of the great modern horror films, but as a franchise its track record has been spotty at best, painfully bad at worst. Halloween H2O: Twenty Years Later, directed by horror vet Steve Miner (Friday the 13th parts 2 and 3, House), won't displace John Carpenter's original but it might help you forget the films in between. Miner certainly has: the film begins as if sequels 3 through 6 never happened. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis, reprising her role for the first time in almost two decades) faked her death and is now a single mom and headmistress of an exclusive California private school. She's also a secret alcoholic who lives in fear of her homicidal brother-bogeyman Michael Myers. Guess who decides to show up for a family reunion? The film begins with classic horror-movie exposition (the deserted college campus, Michael's escape, Laurie's waking nightmares) accomplished with some humor and style, but it's all setup for the second half, a driving roller coaster of stalk-and-slash thrills. There's little of the self-conscious genre referencing of Scream and at times the film is a little far-fetched--it is a slasher movie about a knife-wielding homicidal maniac who won't stay dead, after all--but Curtis transforms Laurie from a shrieking victim into an empowered, determined horror-movie heroine who's learned a thing or two from the previous films. Adam Arkin, Josh Hartnett, and TV cutie Michelle Williams (Dawson's Creek) costar, and the script received uncredited polish from Scream writer Kevin Williamson; Curtis's mom, Janet Leigh, pops up in a cameo. --Sean Axmaker

Description

This smart and suspenseful thriller scares up a bone-chilling good time with original scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis (TRUE LIES, HALLOWEEN I&II) and a hot cast of hip young stars! Now the headmistress of a private school, Laurie Strode (Curtis) is still struggling with the horrifying, 20-year-old memories of the maniacal killer Michael Myers ... when he suddenly reappears with a vengeance! And this Halloween, his terror will strike a whole new generation! Laurie's rebellious son (Josh Hartnett -- THE FACULTY), his girlfriend (Michelle Williams -- TV's DAWSON'S CREEK), and the school security guard (LL COOL J -- WOO, B.A.P.S.) will become Michael's newest victims unless Laurie can conquer her greatest fears and put evil in its place once and for all! The time has come again for you to experience the frightening fun of HALLOWEEN -- the motion picture series that totally redefined terror!

5 out of 5 stars Short and sweet.......2007-09-06

The showdown between Laurie and Myers makes the film. I watched it yesterday and I still get chills from how Michael stalks his victims. His face is ghost white and you can see no expression. The movie does seem rather short but at least they didnt film it with useless information. The only problem is this movie is filmed with flavor of the month celebs (meaning they were hot at this time) including LL Cool J, Joseph Gordon Levitt (in a really small part), Adam Arkin, and Michelle Williams. People can point out Josh Hartnett as well but he did make that amazing movie called Lucky Number Slevien. Pick up this movie if you loved the orignal movie, this movie wont disappoint. If you dont like it, you wasted 86 minutes of your life.

4 out of 5 stars JAMIE LEE CURTIS AND MICHAEL MYERS A GREAT PAIR!!.......2007-09-02

why is it that these two go so great together. jamie was made for this, and the "shape" michael is super. this movie was special. they reunite after so long, and this one's up there with halloween the original. it's that good. mike breaks out, and is coming to get her, she feels it, and her son and his friends the first he comes after. then they meet face to face. i love that part, great acting. then he's after her. she gets tired of running and fights back. and in a certain scene she's the hunter not the hunted, good twist for a minute, but as always michael is the boogyman can't beat him. the chase is on. then she thinks she's won, but not by a long shot. it must go on again... super movie, loved it.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Sequel Ever!!!!.......2007-08-30

Bad Plot. A Brand new (Sqeaky clean) Michael Mask. C-List Actors. If There Were a 0 Rating, That's what it would of got. Worst Halloween in the Series, Besides part 3. Then again, part 3 Wasn't about Michael. The Decapitation scene was the Crappiest death ever. Where was the blood? Dimension didn't give this movie a budget at all. If you read this, Do Not Buy this Movie!!!

Terrible Sequel.

4 out of 5 stars AT LAST A SEQUEL WORTH WATCHING!.......2007-06-04

This entry into the halloween series is probably about as good as it is gonna get! After two really really bad installments(parts 5 and 6) we get a pretty darn good sequel "Halloween H20". The best thing about the movie is that Jamie Lee Curtis is back and it makes all the difference. I still don't understand why they keep changing Michael's mask? It looked great in the first movie...why fix what ain't broke? This movie is really a 3 and 1/2 star movie, but they don't have that option. The DVD transfer is good, but I would like to see a 16X9 upgrade someday.

4 out of 5 stars Jamie Lee Curtis returns to the film that made her a star.......2007-05-20

In HALLOWEEN H20, Jamie Lee Curtis returns to the film franchise which made her a star. This is probably the best entry since "Halloween II", in terms of performances and the fact that Jamie Lee Curtis is back as terrorised Laurie Strode. To properly enjoy this film, you have to disregard the 4th, 5th, and 6th films which featured Laurie's daughter, Jamie Lloyd. There is no daughter here, instead we have Laurie's son John (played by Josh Hartnett).

The film picks up 20 years to the day of the original Haddonfield slayings. With a new name and persona, Laurie Strode is the headmistress of a private school in Southern California, yet still living with the daily terror of her past literally coming back to haunt her. Sadistic, unstoppable Michael Myers has tracked down her records and decides a little family reunion is needed, but this time, Laurie vows to ensure it will be the final showdown...

Jamie Lee Curtis perfectly slips back into the role of Laurie, and the rest of the cast is equally fine, including Jamie's legendary mother (Janet Leigh, "Psycho") in a fun cameo as the school receptionist, Josh Hartnett as her son, and Adam Arkin as her boyfriend. There are some brilliant set-ups and action scenes, and the tension is taut.

HALLOWEEN H20 originally set out to close the chapter on Laurie and Michael, but the franchise has continued with "Halloween: Resurrection", again with Jamie Lee Curtis.

A box-office hit when released in 1994, this sprawling, frequently overwrought familial melodrama may get sillier as its plot progresses, but it's the kind of lusty, character-based epic that Hollywood should attempt more often. It's also an unabashedly flattering star vehicle for Brad Pitt as Tristan--the rebellious middle son of a fiercely independent Montana rancher and military veteran (Anthony Hopkins)--who is routinely at odds with his more responsible older brother, Alfred (Aidan Quinn), and younger brother, Samuel (Henry Thomas). From the battlefields of World War I to his adventures as an oceangoing sailor, Tristan's life is full of personal torment, especially when he returns to Montana and finds himself competing with Alfred over Samuel's beautiful widow (Julia Ormond), whose passion for Tristan disrupts the already turbulent Ludlow clan. Under the wide-open canopy of Big Sky country, this operatic tale unfolds with all the bloodlust, tragedy, and scenery-chewing performances you'd expect to find in a hokey bestselling novel (in fact, it's based on the acclaimed novella by Jim Harrison), but it's a potent mix that's highly entertaining. Not surprisingly, John Toll won an Academy Award for his breathtaking outdoor cinematography. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Great movie, So Badly Marketed........2007-09-15

When this movie first came out the trailer was full of the characters talking about overseas politics and looking so stuffy I thought this was another ponderously BORING Merchant Ivory movie and you know those NEVER move along.Being that Anthony Hopkins has been in so many M/Ivory movies, I thought this was another knock-off and I stayed out of the theatre. I didn't see Legends until it came onto Cable. If it had been marketed correctly I would have PAID to see it 10 times!

Wow! Just about my favorite all-time movie! It starts a little slow, but builds such an emotional momentum that you're left drained at the end!
Brad Pitt did an excellent job of acting. Cutting out your brother's heart so his spirit can get to heaven and feeling eternally guilt-ridden and self-destructive because he couldn't save the brother is a tough acting role. The photography is postcard beautiful all the way through and the music score has popped up everywhere because of its incredible beauty. The plot of this movie you can't guess; it goes places you never would expect, places that make you gasp with surprise.

This is the way movies should be made, but alas, I think those days are gone to be replaced by the immature comic book culture we have now.

I bought the book hoping to read more about these fascinating character, but the book was a short story which was only basically an outline. What an incredible job the screenwriters did in fleshing out very psychologically intricate and complicated characters. Much better than the book could every aspire to! All of the actors were perfectly cast. Aidan Quinn as the control freak Alfred; I could see why Susanna blew her brains out after she came back from being finally spurned by Tristan only to get the 3rd degree by Alfred when she got home. Quinn did a great job depicting a man eaten by jealousy of his brother and suspicion of his wife.

This is not a chick flick. It's for all thinking people who love an extremely well-crafted movie and a fantastic emotional roller coaster ride. Having not attended ONE movie this year because of sequels, remakes and just plain drek, I wish, wish, wish we could get another movie this great!

5 out of 5 stars Great Film!!!.......2007-08-20

Touches all levels of emotions, along with enough masculinity to support "not just another chick-flick"

5 out of 5 stars A bigger than life story that merits the title - Legend.......2007-08-15

I never saw this movie until this year when a friend brought the DVD to my place saying how much he liked the movie. I thought it would be more of a sappy melodrama, but I ended up liking it so much that I have added it to my library of favorites. Three brothers, the love of a father and being in love with the same woman mix together in this movie to form a bigger than life story that merits the title - Legend.

The filming is excellent, taking us through some beautiful country and I think Brad Pitt's performance is one of his best. The emotions he goes through to show his character's passion for living and for his family drew me in until I was completely wrapped up in the story. I liked how it is told in the voice of a Native American in the tradition of his people, thus forming the legend of the man who's spirit is kindred to a Grizzly Bear. I would have liked to see the love interest, Susannah be a stronger woman, but then the trials that the family goes through would not have been the same if such were the case.

Anthony Hopkins is one of my favorite actors and this movie shows off his skills well, infusing the character of the father with both humanity and a toughness that provides depth and interest throughout.

4 out of 5 stars Three brothers and one woman under the Big Sky country........2007-06-17

This movie is an epic tale told of three brothers and one woman in Montana in the first part of the twentieth century. The youngest brother comes home from college with a beautiful woman on his side. She falls for the middle brother Brad Pitt, who is not altogether interested. The oldest brother falls hopelessly in love with her. This movies plot does get convoluted and confusing at times. The tortured soul that is the middle brother is a model for narcissistic ego maniac. It does have beautiful cinematography, and the story and the characters are interesting enough to keep your attention. The problem I have with the movie is that it does just get too bogged down with its own story. Overall it is fun to watch and I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Love, betrayal, and drama..........2007-05-16

The beauty of the countryside in this movie is magnificent. The Rocky Mountains of Montana in the early 1900s must have offered challenging experiences as people wrestled with the elements.

The movie is the story of a man, played by Anthony Hopkins, who has three sons and is abandoned by his wife. So he sets out to raise these three boys and at some point writes to his wife to say... I know how to guide men through war, but this is much harder...

Anthony Hopkins plays the role of Colonel Ludlow, discharged from the war because he wanted to regain some sanity. Therefore, he hates government, he despises the drive to conquer and fight over land, and is highly protective of Indians.

This family of men lives out in the wilderness, therefore, nature is the chisel that forms the character of the three boys. They are very close and the oldest two, played by Brad Pitt and Aidan Quinn, are extremely caring and protective of their younger brother, played by Henry Thomas.

The younger son goes away to college and there he meets Susanna, played by Julia Ormond [played Princess Guinevere in the movie First Knight]. He falls in love with her and upon returning home, brings her along to meet the family.

As she enters the life of these lonely men, she captures the heart of each and everyone. The father is delighted that a refined lady has joined them because thanks to her they read, sing, and enjoy the feminine side of life. But... the three brothers soon encounter the difficulties of jealousy, envy, betrayal and competition for the same woman.

Brad Pitt, as usual, plays the role of the man who breaks other people's relationships, breaks hearts all around, but his performance is superb as Tristan... the favorite son.

Don't miss it! A 1994 Academy winner for best cinematography, this movie offers the passionate journey into the darkest secrets of love, betrayal, and families.

Molly Ringwald established herself as the teen queen of the '80s in this fresh comedy. The movie is a day in the life of Samantha, whose 16th birthday is turning out to be anything but sweet. All the traumas of teendom come down on one long day, which sees Samantha surrounded by dithery relatives, mooning over a high school hunk, and pursued by a sawed-off Lothario. Sixteen Candles marked the directing debut of John Hughes, and its goofy energy displayed a promising talent with a great ear for high school lingo ... a promise neglected since Hughes became, after Home Alone, a one-man entertainment industry. There are some pretty crass moments (Why the stereotype of the foreign-exchange student from Asia?), but Ringwald's steady appeal smoothes over the rough spots. As the pubescent, self-styled lady-killer, Anthony Michael Hall turns in a hilarious portrait of a young swinger; he and Ringwald would reteam with Hughes for The Breakfast Club, another key teen picture of the decade. --Robert Horton

Sixteen Candles is still a classic like The Breakfast Club. Sixteen Candles is the story of a girl who's parents have forgotten her birthday, and to make it worse she is followed helplessly by a nerd played by Anthony Michael Hall. Molly Ringwald plays the truly tortured Sam, this film still gives me belly laughs everytime. Sixteen Candles is priceless and one of John Hughes's best films to date. I highly recommend this teenage romp out. Enjoy!

Louis L'Amour's easy voice with its gentle rhythm sets the tone and pace of the film in a spoken introduction to this loping, rambling three-hour-plus TV-movie adaptation of his novels The Daybreakers and Sackett. Sam Elliot stars as the elder Sackett, a nomad hunting and trapping in the mountains who happens upon an ancient treasure. Tom Selleck and Jeff Osterhage are his younger siblings, forced to leave home to avoid a Hatfield and McCoy situation. As the Sackett brothers wind their way across the Midwest prairies and mountains we join them on cattle drives and gold hunts, in gunfights and fistfights, and in a climactic showdown as they find their place in the world. This 1979 film rambles and meanders like a lazy river winding through a beautiful landscape of peaks and plains and forests, punctuated by the occasional gunfight and enlivened by a story that celebrates both the open range and the taming of the towns. Elliot looks almost young but flashes his savage eyes behind a thick black beard, while Selleck's easygoing manner is backed up with a stony-faced determination. The excellent cast includes a veritable who's who of Western character actors: Glenn Ford, Ben Johnson, Gilbert Roland, Gene Evans, Jack Elam, Slim Pickens, L.Q. Jones, Mercedes McCambridge, and Pat Buttram. Followed in 1982 by The Shadow Riders, which reunited the three stars and even a few members of the supporting cast in a tale of three different brothers. --Sean Axmaker

A cast of wonderful character actors tears up the scenery in this impressive adaptation of Louis L'amour's Sackett series. Sam Elliott can give a wild-eyed crazy look like no one's business. He and Ben Johnson, and Tom Selleck and Glenn Ford, shared an on-screen chemistry that makes magic on the screen. What a combination for a TV mini-series. This one will always be in my movie library.

5 out of 5 stars Great Western!.......2007-09-13

Adapted from a story written by one of the greatest western writers of all time, I was happy the video version lived up to my expectations. It was a joy to watch the Sacketts come alive on screen, and be played by some of my favorite actors. I wasn't the least disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Sacketts on Parade.......2007-08-25

I ordered this disk as it is one of the Sackett series never seen on TV and I do watch most all westerns being a big big fan of Louis LaMour. I wish some of the movie companies would make some of the other LaMours and film them for tv specials. I rate this at the top and a great Amazon transaction.

4 out of 5 stars Louis L'Amour's The Sacketts.......2007-08-23

Louis L'Amours one of the greater western writers. His books are faithfully made into movies like The Sacketts. I think he is a great
teller of western stories. I was not that big of a fan of western
when I was growing up my dad loved them. After following Louis L'Amours
books and movies I have become a fan. It is how judge other westerns now
for quality of story and realism.

4 out of 5 stars Good Western.......2007-07-24

I enjoyed this movie a lot. The only real problem I had with it was you could tell it was made for TV by the scene changes.

Movie 1: The Gathering
Alien envoys come to the giant space station in the pilot that launched the five-year TV series.

Movie 2

Amazon.com

The Babylon 5 pilot movie The Gathering was originally broadcast in 1993 a full year ahead of the regular show. A somewhat dull tale of an attempt to assassinate Koch, the Vorlon ambassador to B5, the feature served to introduce Commander Jeffery Sinclair (Michael O'Hare) and Security Chief Michael Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle) as well as familiarize the audience with the unique environment of a five-mile-long space station in the year 2257. Missing many of the main cast, and suffering from a leaden pace and mediocre music score, series creator J Michael Straczynski later improved The Gathering by tightening the cut for a special edition (the version released on DVD), adding some deleted character moments and commissioning a new score from series composer Christopher Franke.

Four new TV movies were part of the deal to syndicate Babylon 5. In the Beginning is a prelude set 10 years before Babylon 5, telling the story of the Earth-Minbari war. Told retrospectively, many of the mysteries revealed gradually in the main series are recounted, making the show a collection of spoilers for newcomers while adding little for established fans. It is effective to see events only previously talked about, and enjoyable to have most of the main cast playing younger versions of themselves. River of Souls is a self-contained adventure featuring a return of the Soul Hunters from Season One, while Thirdspace offers a spectacular Lovecraftian space opera which slots into the saga after the end of the Shadow War. A Call to Arms is the most important of the TV films, laying the ground for the future TV series Crusade. Set five years after the Shadow War, it tells the story of a Drahk revenge attack on Earth. A final showcase for Bruce Boxleitner as Sheridan, the story fits between fifth-season episodes "Objects at Rest" and "Sleeping in Light." The cliffhanger ending sets the scene for new starship Excalibur to boldly go on a five-year mission to explore strange new worlds and find a cure for the Shadow virus infecting the Earth. --Gary S. 2 out of 5 stars Babylon 5 The Movie Collection.......2007-09-02

Turns out that most of the movies were not very good, just the one that shows how things started.

3 out of 5 stars Babylon 5 Movie Collection.......2007-07-22

The DVDs were without flaw. The movies hold one's interest but; not as well as the series. The first and last movies (The Gathering - A Call to Arms) were the best of the five. For the price you can't go wrong.

Two of the movies skip in a few places. The movies were good. Came in good time

Babylon 5 - The Gathering: "And so it begins..."
A good pilot to an excellent series, Babylon 5 - The Gathering, brings to the screen the parallel stories of prominent people aboard a major station under Human control in neutral territory.
The setting is the Babylon 5 space station orbiting Epsilon 3. The year is 2257, nine years after the Earth-Minbari War (one year before the series begins), and representatives from the four major space-faring races, the Centauri, Humans, Minbari, Narns, as well as numerous minor races have all gathered at B5 in a last effort at maintaining galactic peace. The arrival, however, of the fifth major space-faring race's ambassador, the Vorlon Kosh, will result in quite a bit of turbulence...
Michael O'Hare, Mira Furlan, Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, carry out their performances well though one can tell that they are a bit uneasy, as is the case with most series in the beginning. 4 Stars

In the Beginning: Guaranteed to shed a tear
The year is 2278 and an elderly Emperor Mollari sensing his end is nearing narrates the story of the Earth-Minbari War and its heroes to a young Centauri boy, his sister and their nanny.
Bruce Boxleitner, Mira Furlan, Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors' performances are highly commendable.
In the Beginning contains a lot of information found within the first four seasons of B5 and then more, therefore, it should be viewed at some point during season V, preferably right before Sleeping in Light, the last of the original episodes. 5 Stars

Thirdspace: "It's anti-life itself"
Though I haven't yet read the book (for which I've heard good things), Thirdspace the movie was quite a disappointment.
Set during Season IV, the crew of Babylon 5 recovers a huge ancient artifact, which when activated could bring more doom and destruction than the Shadows themselves...
1) To start with there is no Garibaldi, Gkar or Londo and their absence is definitely felt.
2) Everybody is too stiff. Performances seem forced and not natural, especially Dellen and Vir who are not their usual selves.
3) Sheridan scoots through an intense space battle in a space suit (!), dodging both friendly and hostile fire (!), plants a nuke manually (!), gets out avoiding the guardians (!), survives the nuclear blast and then jokes with Delenn... Hmmm... Am I missing something?
4) Finally the elevated level of horror served as a repellent more than anything else.
2.5 Stars

The River of Souls: "Life in Death... Immortality!"
The year is 2263, six months after President Sheridan's departure for Minbar, and the Soul Hunters return with an unexpected visit to Babylon 5... en mass.
Though most of the major characters are absent (similarly to Thirdspace), excluding Captain Lochley, Security Chief Zack Allen, Lt Corwin, and Michael Garibaldi, the River of Souls turns out to be excellent in every possible way; the setting, the plot, the dialogues, the special effects, and the music are all wonderful!
There is also the surprise, though not great, appearance by Martin Sheen, who probably should have stuck to the original plan and played the archeologist instead of the Soul Hunter. 4.5 Stars

A Call to Arms: Now this is a Babylon 5 Movie!
AMAZING from start to finish, A Call to Arms brings to the screen the long awaited conflict with the hated Drakh! The Year is 2267 and President Sheridan is contacted by the Techno-Mages who have been keeping tabs on the Shadows' former servants/allies and who inform him that the Drakh are on the warpath. Their target... Earth!
Bruce Boxleitner, Jerry Doyle, Jeff Conaway, Tracy Scoggins, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)!
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the special effects are simply incredible!
I wish I could give it 6 Stars!!! KEEP'EM COMING!!!

5 out of 5 stars THEY DID A BETTER JOB ON THIS SET OF DVDS........2007-05-28

THIS SET OF DVDS HAS MORE COMMENTARY THAN THE SEASON 1-5 DVDS OF BABYLON 5. IT DOES NOT HAVE A LOT OF EXTRAS, BUT THEY CERTAINLY PUT MORE TIME, THOUGHT, EFFORT, AND MONEY INTO THIS SET THAN THEY DID THE OTHERS. THE PACKAGING IS A LETTER BETTER TOO. IN THE END THE MOVIES ARE VERY GOOD. MY FAVORITES WERE "IN THE BEGINNING", AND THE CRUSADE PILOT "A CALL TO ARMS." "A CALL TO ARMS," IS AS MUCH A CRUSADE STORY AS A BABYLON 5 STORY. I DO NOT KNOW WHY THEY DID NOT PUT IT ON THE CRUSADE SET OF DVDS.
