Filmmaker Robert Zemeckis topped his breakaway hit Romancing the Stone with Back to the Future, a joyous comedy with a dazzling hook: what would it be like to meet your parents in their youth? Billed as a special-effects comedy, the imaginative film (the top box-office smash of 1985) has staying power because of the heart behind Zemeckis and Bob Gale's script. High schooler Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox, during the height of his TV success) is catapulted back to the '50s where he sees his parents in their teens, and accidentally changes the history of how Mom and Dad met. Filled with the humorous ideology of the '50s, filtered through the knowledge of the '80s (actor Ronald Reagan is president, ha!), the film comes off as a Twilight Zone episode written by Preston Sturges. Filled with memorable effects and two wonderfully off-key, perfectly cast performances: Christopher Lloyd as the crazy scientist who builds the time machine (a DeLorean luxury car) and Crispin Glover as Marty's geeky dad. --Doug Thomas

Critics and audiences didn't seem too happy with Back to the Future, Part II, the inventive, perhaps too clever sequel. Director Zemeckis and cast bent over backwards to add layers of time-travel complication, and while it surely exercises the brain it isn't necessarily funny in the same way that its predecessor was. It's well worth a visit, though, just to appreciate the imagination that went into it, particularly in a finale that has Marty watching his own actions from the first film. --Tom Keogh

Shot back-to-back with the second chapter in the trilogy, Back to the Future, Part III is less hectic than that film and has the same sweet spirit of the first, albeit in a whole new setting. This time, Marty ends up in the Old West of 1885, trying to prevent the death of mad scientist Christopher Lloyd at the hands of gunman Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson, who had a recurring role as the bully Biff). Director Zemeckis successfully blends exciting special effects with the traditions of a Western and comes up with something original and fun. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars A very nice Package of Back to the Future Trilogy.......2007-09-10

I am very satisfied with my purchase of this trilogy. It has hours and hours of behind the scenes and bloopers and How they made the movies, which is very interesting. The movies come nicely packaged in a very nice dvd holder that opens like a book. Someday I expect that these movies will be known as Classics. Amazon had the cheapest price of the Trilogy of any store or online store I shopped at. An all around great value for sure.

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie, but more bad language than I remembered!.......2007-09-10

I bought this three movie package because my girls (6 and 8) were singing the Jonas Bros. song Year 3000, which mentions this movie. I remember loving this movie when I was a teen! However, I did NOT remember how many cuss words where used in this movie, so beware if you are purchasing this for your children to enjoy today!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have For All Fans.......2007-09-04

After years of waiting, Back to the Future is finally released to DVD. The three movies that nearly single-handedly made Michael J. Fox into a star are here for purchase.

These three DVD contain an amazement of extras, including commentary on all three features, deleted scenes for the movies, the interviews, featurettes, documetaries, an assortment of others. A definite must have for film fans of all ages.

One of the most universally loved movies to ever grace the cinema. The movies look flawless. The prints are amazing, everything looks amazing. It's just an amazing experience. Presented in 1:85:1 anamorphic widescreen, it's a beauty to the eyes, and the 5.1 soundtrack is a beauty ot the ears as well.

This is a definite must have. Good family fun for everyone, and if you've seen the movies a hundred times over, check out the discs for the boatload of extras. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars very funny.......2007-09-03

Highly creative and entertaining stories. I wish they had gone a little easier on the sexual innuendo, especially making "mom" out to be such a tramp as a teen. The language is also really rough, especially in part two.

5 out of 5 stars Good trilogy.......2007-09-03

Back to the future, a super classic, and this remasterized version make this even better, if you're looking for something that send you back to the past once again, you got to see Back to the future to remember the beginning of the science fiction movies. Oh my loved 80's, Bye

5 out of 5 stars A note about this film........2007-09-04

This film is frequently miscategorized as a fictionalized action film when it is, in reality, a highly accurate documentary where all of the events occur in real time. In order to truly enjoy this film, you must keep that in mind.

4 out of 5 stars "This guy eats too much red meat!".......2007-09-04

COMMANDO (1985) marked the beginning of "Ahnold's" shift from stoic, badly acted adventure flicks with no dialogue to stoic, badly acted adventure flicks with dialogue.

COMMANDO gives us the Governator at his steroidal apotheosis. The unrelieved muscularity of his physique is unbelievable in this film. A human mountain, he plays John Matrix, a Rambo-like figure who is dragged out of retirement by the Colonel Trautman-like General Kirby after members of his ultra-secret unit are killed in a series of hits.

Although "Matrix" translates as "Womb" in Latin, the English word has an inorganic feel to it, and in fact COMMANDO presages and even exceeds THE TERMINATOR films in its gratutitous violence. Matrix is a killing machine. Fortunately for the story, he is also a sympathetic doting father to Jenny (Alyssa Milano at age ten), and he has a wicked sense of humor---the one-liners in COMMANDO are legendary.

Matrix's idyllic retirement comes to an abrupt end when a crummy South American dictator, once overthrown by Matrix, plots his return to power and kidnaps Jenny to ensure Matrix's cooperation in overthrowing his democratic successor. Matrix sets out with the twin goals of rescuing Jenny and wreaking hell on said South American dictator. Along the way, Matrix shanghaies Cindy (Rae Dawn Chong) into helping him.

The violence is cartoonish and hilarious. Matrix jumps out of flying jets, he rips bucket seats out of cars barehanded, he smashes those same cars into telephone poles without injury, he breaks other people's bones with abandon, he drives bulldozers into stores, kills bad guys by the dozen, creatively "redecorates" the Galleria Mall, and all through it, he mutters lines like, "I eat Green Berets for breakfast...and right now I'm very hungry!" and "Remember when I said I'd kill you last? I lied." shortly before dropping a bad guy off a cliff ("I let him go," Matrix explains to Cindy).

In the third reel the Bandido Osterreicher revenges Butch and Sundance by singlehandedly killing the entire army of a small South American country, in the process rescuing his daughter, eliminating the crummy South American dictator, and finishing off Bennett, a rogue member of his old unit who is impaled by a length of iron pipe (which then emits a ton of steam).

Forget logic. Forget reality. Essentially a live action cartoon, COMMANDO is a classic of the Beer Film genre of the mid-80's. Invite some buddies, crack open a few cold ones, ask She Who Must Be Obeyed to keep an eye on the hot dogs and chili, and kick back.

5 out of 5 stars I eat Green Berets for breakfast and right now I'm very hungry!.......2007-08-31

If you think you've seen Commando before on DVD then you're gonna pass on this one, right?

WRONG!

This guilty pleasure is one of my all-time favorite testosterone pumping 80's Ahnuld action flicks chock full of some of the most memorable and hilariously over-the-top one-liners ever assembled in a single Schwarzenneger film with an exhaustive body count tally of 81 confirmed kills. Now it's finally getting the UNRATED Director's Cut treatment it deserves so we can see even more of the Governator at his macho 80's Republican finest.

The Commando Director's Cut DVD features the original 90-minute theatrical film plus an all-new 95-minute unrated version as envisioned by director Mark L. Lester restoring over five minutes of never-before-seen footage back into the film. Additional DVD special features include director audio commentary, deleted scenes, two behind-the-scenes featurettes, photo galleries and more.

Special Features:

Commando Director's Cut is presented in widescreen (1.85:1 aspect ratio) with English 5.1 Dolby Digital and Dolby Surround audio, Spanish Mono, French Stereo plus French and Spanish subtitles.
Bonus content includes:

* Seamlessly branched Director's Cut with never-before-seen footage
* Audio commentary by director Mark Lester (on theatrical version only)
* Deleted Scenes
* Pure Action featurette
* Let Off Some Steam featurette
* Photo galleries with over 150 images

Though she made her first movie at the age of 13, Diane Lane has only blossomed into a true star in her 30s, and Under the Tuscan Sun marks her full flowering. After a brutal divorce, Frances (Lane, Unfaithful, A Walk on the Moon) is persuaded by her friend Patti (Sandra Oh) to take a tour of Italy--where, on a whim that she hopes will rescue her from her desperate unhappiness, she buys a rundown villa and sets out to renovate it. Along the way, she gets advice from a former Fellini actress, meets a scrumptious Italian lover, and helps support Patti after her own relationship derails. The conclusion of Under the Tuscan Sun holds no surprises, but the deft turns and observations along the way are delightful. Lane carries the film effortlessly but surely, exuding both heartbreak and re-awakening passion. --Bret Fetzer

Description

From the studio that brought you SWEET HOME ALABAMA comes the extraordinary romantic comedy starring Academy Award(R) nominee Diane Lane (2002 Best Actress, UNFAITHFUL). Based on the #1 New York Times best-selling book, UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN follows San Francisco writer Frances Mayes (Lane) to Italy as a good friend offers her a special gift -- 10 days in Tuscany. Once there, she is captivated by its beauty and warmth, and impulsively buys an aging, but very charming, villa. Fully embracing new friends and local color, she finds herself immersed in a life-changing adventure filled with enough unexpected surprises, laughter, friendship, and romance to restore her new home -- and her belief in second chances.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful setting, but...........2007-08-31

This movies is, of course, a chick-flick...There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, just as there's nothing wrong with all the action flicks out there.
This one however takes the genre to a bit of an extreme. All these exotic, interesting people: (the mysterious yet harmlessly interesting Englishwoman; all the stereotypical "perfect gentleman" and perfectly dressed Italian men; the oh-so-supportive pregnant - and lesbian - best friend (played by Sandra Oh)....and its all set in beautiful Tuscany where one just happens to be able to purchase a picture-perfect Italian villa to fix up. And no sign of the evil ex-husband as the heroine goes about putting her life back together....

This is a female fantasy movie, obviously. Its very escapist in that regard, and that's fine if you like that sort of thing - it was just a little too way-out for my taste.
Its saving grace is the wonderful setting in beautiful Tuscany Italy. I give it 3 stars just for that...

5 out of 5 stars Under the Tuscan Sun.......2007-07-29

I love this movie and have seen it several times. The scenery is breathtaking, the story is lovely, Diane Lane is at her best and
Sandra Oh is a favorite of mine so no complaints! Great movie!

1 out of 5 stars very much disappointed.......2007-07-23

It was just terrible for me, living in Italy for many years now. I hated to see exaggerated stereotyping of Italian men. it seemed to me a real bad Hollywood interpretation of A Room with A View.

5 out of 5 stars Romantic.......2007-07-07

This is a lovely movie. I just finished watching it on the TV. Diane Lane is superb in her role, along with the other actors.

This movie is about a recently divorced woman starting out on her own again. She travels to Tuscany (Italy) for a holiday. On a whim, she decides to purchase a run-down house there to renovate.

The movie follows her transformation from being somewhat depressed and disillusioned to having an optimistic outlook.

There are some special scenes in this movie that are very heartfelt when this woman comes to really appreciate the importance her friends have on her life.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars An intelligent chick flick?.......2007-06-20

I got this DVD because it is my best friend's favorite movie. It was good & worth watching- funny & intelligent. Only four stars because I'm not crazy about chick flicks, and the movie keeps bouncing back and forth from drama to comedy- leaving me a little confused at times.

5 out of 5 stars Fun kids DVD.......2007-08-23

This is such a fun and energetic DVD. The songs and dancing are great. My kids never tire of watching it! They love all the Hi-5 videos. It is great entertainment for the kids, and adults too! And they have some good messages too.

1 out of 5 stars Need better voices.......2007-07-02

The skits are somehow less engaging with this cast. The girls look like dolls and the female voices are horrid, especially Kimee's. Painful. Hate the version of the series. Even as Americans, we prefer the Australian version.

5 out of 5 stars Hi 5 Move your body dvd .......2007-06-07

I love this group they are wounderful and they dress so nice they are awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Get up & dance!!.......2007-04-30

We love Hi-5!! Each episode not only educates your child (on subjects like food, senses, animals, etc.) but really gets the kids up and moving. It is very hard for a child to watch this show without getting up and dancing, clapping, & singing with the Hi-5 gang. This show also puts emphasis on social skills like friendship, manners, and self-esteem. We really like the new packaging on these dvds, it just adds a bit more to the fun of Hi-5. They have a handle so the kids can carry them around--great for taking to grandma's!!

5 out of 5 stars YAY HI-5!.......2007-03-27

This DVD is totally awesome...there isn't much else I can say!!! The fab five are amazing!!!

They are very, very talented, and such a pleasure to watch!!

I was lucky enough to see them live in concert this past February, and see them do songs from this DVD live...they certainly did NOT disappoint!!! And I was even fortunate enough to meet them, and they are as nice as nice could be!

This DVD is very much worth the money!!! Hi-5 is really the best kids show on TV!!! :D

Yes, that is Bill Paxton as Ilan Mitchell-Smith's militaristic big brother. And that's Robert Downey Jr. as one of the in-crowd jerks who makes nerds Mitchell-Smith and Hall's lives miserable. Fortunately, this is a John Hughes comedy and our smart nerds create the perfect woman, Lisa (Kelly LeBrock), using a computer and voodoo. Lisa is a willing sex toy, has magical powers, and just wants to help the boys get even and meet nice babes. She even cleans up. The fantasy ebullience of Hughes is given full rein here and that's good and bad (mostly good). It's all aimed at a certain kind of hormone-addled, 16-year-old sensibility; but who doesn't have a little bit of that in them? --Keith Simanton

Watching a young Anthony Michael Hall ham it up as a geek who want to find a gorlfriend and doesn't get anywhere, they decide to build one on their computer, and bam, they get kelly Le Brock instead. All sorts of mayhem ensues and watching Bill Pullman playing the older brother Chip is hilarious. Another movie to stick in your movie collection if you are a huge fan of the 80's genre.

4 out of 5 stars 80's rule.......2007-07-15

This is a grreat movie from the 80's that is timeless. It is a cult classic along with pretty in pink and breakfast club...

3 out of 5 stars One small step for nerds... one giant babe for nerd kind........2007-07-06

take a barbie doll, some weird gooey mess, a bit of electronic tinkering, two teenagers with bras on their heads and what do you get?

You get Kelly LeBrock!

That is the equation we are asked to accept in this cute and campy movie from the 1980's.

This movie was made during the "Breakfast Club" and "St Elmo's Fire" craze, When all of your "Sixteen Candles" were "Pretty In Pink".

It's basically Breakfast Club and Pretty In Pink for Science geeks. A coming of age story about two nerds who can't seem to get a date so they decide to MAKE a date.

Problem one with this movie? Two nerdy guys and one girl? They have enough problems getting women as it is. You'd think they'd at least want their own woman.

But in the end, they get what they wanted all along anyway... real (if teeny bopper) love.

And Kelly LeBrock goes back to wherever it is artificially-created model-type one-hit wonder movie babes go when they're no longer needed.... I think they call it Celebrity Fit Club.

I rate this movie 4 stars for special effects...but honestly I gotta give it 3 for plot.

I was a science nerd growing up and it was too weird for me even then.

2 out of 5 stars I wish I could love this like others do..........2007-06-12

Weird Science has a funny high-concept premise and an endearing cast, but even when I was a teen and the movie was brand new, I thought the humor was messy and heavy-handed. I never understood how so many of my contemporaries consider this a "classic", especially when stacked up against Revenge of the Nerds, Real Genius, Better Off Dead, or even Hughes' masterful 16 Candles or Ferris Bueller. Still, the movie is not without a certain odd charm and there are some great moments (mainly involving Bill Paxton); I find myself wishing Amazon would let me give it an extra half star!

4 out of 5 stars 2 kids made a woman.......2007-06-10

These kids are nerds too, they want to party a fall in love.

Nearly every biblical film is ambitious, creating pictures to go with some of the most famous and sacred stories in the Western world. DreamWorks' first animated film was the vision of executive producer Jeffrey Katzenberg after his ugly split from Disney, where he had been acknowledged as a key architect in that studio's rebirth (The Little Mermaid, etc.). His first film for the company he helped create was a huge, challenging project without a single toy or merchandising tie-in, the backbone du jour of family entertainment in the 1990s.

Three directors and 16 writers succeed in carrying out much of Katzenberg's vision. The linear story of Moses is crisply told, and the look of the film is stunning; indeed, no animated film has looked so ready to be placed in the Louvre since Fantasia. Here is an Egypt alive with energetic bustle and pristine buildings. Born a slave and set adrift in the river, Moses (voiced by Val Kilmer) is raised as the son of Pharaoh Seti (Patrick Stewart) and is a fitting rival for his stepbrother Rameses (Ralph Fiennes). When he learns of his roots--in a knockout sequence in which hieroglyphics come alive--he flees to the desert, where he finds his roots and heeds God's calling to free the slaves from Egypt.

Katzenberg and his artists are careful to tread lightly on religious boundaries. The film stops at the parting of the Red Sea, only showing the Ten Commandments--without commentary--as the film's coda. Music is a big part (there were three CDs released) and Hans Zimmer's score and Stephen Schwartz's songs work well--in fact the pop-ready, Oscar-winning "When You Believe" is one of the weakest songs. Kids ages 5 and up should be able to handle the referenced violence; the film doesn't shy away from what Egyptians did to their slaves. Perhaps Katzenberg could have aimed lower and made a more successful animated film, but then again, what's a heaven for? --Doug Thomas

4 out of 5 stars Children's Version of the Story.......2007-08-21

Being animated, this is expectedly directed towards a younger audience. That does not keep it from being acceptable to older viewers, however. It generates enough interest to be worthwhile to all viewing ages.

It tells the story of Moses, born to Hebrew slaves and raised as a prince of Egypt. When he learns of his origins, he flees Egypt only to be called to return. He has been chosen by God to lead his people out of slavery.

While this tells the same basic story as the Charlton Heston epic, it focuses on different events and has, of course, a more childish approach. The crossing of the Red Sea is the undoubted climax but other than that, the whole tenor is different. It brings out some parts of the story left out of the classic. Moreover, it emphasizes a friendship between the young Moses and crown prince rather than a rivalry.

The songs seem a bit out of place but, for me, they always do in a musical. This once has an Academy Award winner, though, so I guess the music is good if you like your characters to break into song at the drop of a hat.

For those interested in the biblical content, its not too bad. There is not much emphasis on God but there are not any large scale contradictions of scripture either.

I prefer the classic version but the kids seemed to like this one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Retelling of a Classic Story.......2007-08-03

When I first heard that Steven Spielberg and friends were making an animated version of the story of Moses and the Exodus, I was nervous that they would sanitize or reconstruct history or religiously neuter Moses. "Prince of Egypt" is the opposite: a wonderful, highly researched and magnificently filmed movie that is an animated version of the brilliant rabbinic tradition of midrash, the rabbinic literary device that answers questions and fills in gaps about stories in the Hebrew Bible. To my relief, the story stays true to the *Israelite* experience ... while freedom from slavery is obviously a universal value, this was - after all - a *Jewish* moment in history.

The characters are 3-dimensional (so to speak): Moses is the doubter who eventually must successfully confront his own fear and faith; Aaron, the peacemaker who frequently gets lost in the family dynamic; and - the biggest character treat for me - Miriam, the dynamo partially responsible for the infant Moses' survival: for the first time, a Jewish woman who actually looks like a *Jewish* woman (and no, I'm not talking stereotypical Eastern European - this Miriam is a blend of Ashkenazi and Sephardi).

The music is a special gift, especially the voice of Israeli singer Ofra Haza, who tragically died less than two years after making the movie. I was excited to hear real Hebrew Bible text.

The effects are spectacular - from the hieroglyphics that come to life during an especially frightening dream sequence to the sheer brilliance of the depiction of the plagues (the death of the Egyptian first born is especially harrowing).

We've happily come a long way from the wooden theatrics, pseudo-Jewish theology and cone bras of the Cecil De Mille classic. This "Prince of Egypt" is a wonder.

I've always liked this movie. We had it on VHS, but my daughter wore it out. So, we got the DVD. I'm so happy we did - the quality is great, and we can watch widescreen, which is quite important to me. We're very happy!

5 out of 5 stars A Most Worthwhile Story!.......2007-05-26

Although it is an animated-feature movie, the script is good and the story is very moving. So much of the historical accuracy has been maintained in this story. My family and I feel that it is time and money well-spent! I heartily recommend it to viewers of any age...

The greatist part of this movie is the whos on First. Don't get me wrong, the whole movie was great but as a avid baseball fan I loved the whos on first seen. I think it's the greatist comedy duet done in history. Plus I grew up watching Abbott & Costello movies on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. I will always love there movies but this one the best.

2 out of 5 stars 1 good news and 2 bad news.......2007-09-02

I was delighted when i saw this movie available in HD and i rushed to buy it.Yes the madmax "icon" is still alive since 1982 but the movie has difficult to live well today.

The good news is about the picture quality which is very good withy no grain.

Despite what you may think about typical Mad Max actions scenes the movie is boring for 2 reasons

a) there is nearly no dialog and instead of this there is a permanent horrible music with trumpets and brass instruments who try to give the rythm in the movie. This kills everything.

b) the audio is realy under average. don't expect to hear the engines roaring and the explosion to blow yr living room.

So my opinion is at least rent it before to buy it

In the opposite and maybe in the same category "Waterworld" in HD DVd is something totaling amazing at all levels.

4 out of 5 stars HD DVD delivers.......2007-07-17

I won't go into the movie itself, since everyone has seen it by now and knows it is a classic. This HD disc is great though, for a movie of this budget and age. There are a few short segments that look soft, but overall this disc has spectacular razor sharp HD, and I never thought Mad Max 2 could ever look this great. Seriously, some of these scenes are some of the best I've seen from my HD-A2.
Now for the not-so-good. Sound is adequate, but it won't knock anyone's socks off. The disc is absolutely bare bones. But if you gotta have this movie in HD, I doubt you would be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The classic post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller.......2007-07-05

Sequel to the earlier Mad Max movie, The Road Warrior is a blast of fun and looks great on HD DVD.

I hadn't seen this in years but picked up the HD DVD right away, and it sure looks good. A very fun movie with the classic anti-hero hero Max and, of course, the great chase scene at the climax.

I seem to recall that the third movie, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, was a bloated bust of a sequel, but that hasn't been released on HD DVD yet...

5 out of 5 stars The best it's going to get for Mad Max fans.......2007-06-13

I'm rating this 5-stars not because it's the best look HD-DVD ever, but because I believe this is certainly the best presentation of Road Warrior that's ever been released, or will ever likely be released. It's a keeper.

I remember seeing this movie in the theater. I don't think even the film as shown in the theater contained this much detail, as I noticed details in the movie that I had not seen before. It's a excellent picture.

The sound is good, but nothing like blockbuster movies from recent years, because Road Warrior was made several years ago, and not exactly on a huge budget. Still, it's the best sound quality you're likely to hear for this movie.

Some purists may enjoy the fact that the movie is shown with the title "Mad Max 2" rather than "The Road Warrior" at the beginning, but I don't like it. When I saw the movie in the theater it said "The Road Warrior", and had a bright shining metal effect. I wanted to see THAT, not something that was originally shown in Austrailia. However, I'm not going to get all misty over it and lower the star rating.

If you have Road Warrior on DVD or LaserDisc this is one title that you should absolutely buy the replacement HD-DVD. It makes a big difference.

4 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2007-05-19

I'm saying "finally" because we've finally received a version of the Road Warrior that looks outstanding! The picture looks the best I've ever seen and while the sound isn't as great in terms of bass reproduction, it still sounds very clear, just a tiny bit lackluster. Several of the scenes have a bit of softness to them probably due to age but I'd say about 95% of the film looks crystal clear. There aren't many extras other than an introduction by film critic Leonard Maltin and a filmmaker commentary. A bit lacking in the extras department but the commentary is informative enough for film enthusiasts and fans of the film. It'd be nice to get a retrospective documentary one day on this classic.

At the end of the day, the movie is delivered in an above average presentation and definitely worth a peek in HD.

Foursquare in the gritty-but-heartwarming tradition of Brassed Off and The Full Monty comes Billy Elliot, the first film from noted British theatrical director Stephen Daldry. The setting is County Durham in 1984, and things "up north" are even grimmer than usual: the miners' strike is in full rancorous swing, and 11-year-old Billy's dad and older brother, miners both, are on the picket lines. Billy's got problems of his own. His dad has scraped together the fees to send him to boxing lessons, but Billy has discovered a different aptitude: a genius for ballet dancing. Since admitting to such an activity is tantamount, in this fiercely macho culture, to holding up a sign reading "I Am Gay," Billy keeps it quiet. But his teacher, Mrs. Wilkinson (Julie Walters, wearily undaunted), thinks he should audition for ballet school in London. Family ructions are inevitable.

Daldry's film sidesteps some of the politics, both sexual and otherwise, but scores with its laconic dialogue (credit to screenwriter Lee Hall) and a cracking performance from newcomer Jamie Bell as Billy. His powerhouse dance routines, more Gene Kelly than Nureyev, carry an irresistible sense of exhilaration and self-discovery. Among a flawless supporting cast, Stuart Wells stands out as Billy's sweet gay friend Michael. And if the miners' strike serves largely as background color, the brief episode when visored and truncheon-wielding cops rampage through neat little terraced houses captures one of the most spiteful episodes in recent British history. --Philip Kemp

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Billy Elliot.......2007-07-18

nchored by Bell's soulful lead performance, "Billy Elliot" is an intelligent, often humorous coming-of-age drama by veteran stage director Daldry about masculine prejudice and the promise of escape from grinding, oppressive circumstances. Set against the backdrop of the 1984 miners' strike in Durham County, "Elliot" has an acute eye for working-class sensibilities, but the main focus of this exhilarating story concerns Billy's efforts to translate raw talent into self-realization. An irresistible mix of fancy footwork and feel-good entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars CALLING ALL MUSIC & BILLY ELLIOT LOVERS!!.......2007-07-10

I am soooo frustrated!! In the film, what is the name of the piano ballad that is played when Billy is alone at the dance bar with Mrs. Wilkinson and they are rehearsing? (This is after the scene where Billy has imagined his mother in the kitchen). I have been searching for this song for years! Why oh why did they not include ALL OF THE SONGS from the movie on this sound track? Please help! Thanks in advance.

5 out of 5 stars Oscar-worthy in every sense.......2007-06-26

I was absolutely blown away by this movie. At first the N. England accents were really tough for me to hear w/o turning up the volume quite a bit, but then suddenly they were clear. Don't know if it was the DVD or me. I've since watched Bell in other movies, and he's incredible. This movie is extremely heartwarming. His dad and bro are tough-as-nails coal miners, and Billy likes ballet. No, he lives for it. There are people who believe in him that get him through until his family finally come around, and then dad comes around big time. The ending screwed up the believability factor a bit for me, but all in all very well done.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, Fun, Touching, and poignant.......2007-05-17

I wasn't too sure how I would enjoy a story about a 13 y/o boy but right from the start I was hooked on it. I first watched this movie when I borrowed it from a friend but I quickly knew I had to have a copy for myself. "Billy Elliot" takes place at time and place that give the story a powerful background and places it deep in to the culture of the English working class. The characters feel real, the music is great, the dancing is full of energy and the plot keeps you in the story. Billy's family is fully of love shown in the caring they have for each another and the lengths they will go to support one another. I highly reccomend this movie to anyone that likes a good ending. It is great for the whole family. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The Truth Will Set You Free.......2007-03-25

A wonderful movie about a boy whose family are coal miners in Ireland. This young boy wants to dance instead of following him father and brother into the coal mines. He rises above the ridicule of him family and friends and finds a mentor who helps him fulfill his dreams. What I love so much about this story is that one realizes you don't have to follow the norm in order to be happy and succeed. What we need to do is follow our hearts. I loved this movie and I believe you will too.

--Tom Keogh
