It isn't 1950 anymore.......2007-08-28

My wife and I recently visited Italy and spent several days in Rome. We hoped to recapture some of the visit by watching this old movie set in Rome. There are a number of familiar scenes that were plesant to see again. We were struck by several differences. The first was the almost total absence of people in the movie at famous tourist sites. Today, there are hundreds or thousands of people at the Trivi fountain or the Spanish Steps and the roads are full of cars. The attitudes of the young women (interested only in finding the right man to marry)are almost unrecognizable today. The Italy of the movie is a country just coming out of American occupation following WWII and there is a condescension towards Italians that many Italians (and Americans too)would find offensive today. While we enjoyed the movie (mostly for reminding us of places we visited), it has not aged well. It should be viewed as a snapshot of a time long gone (if it ever was that way), a relatively harmless diversion with no serious content. Acting was adequate. There was a simplistically uplisting message of sorts that does not bear deep examination.

Made My Trip to Rome So Memorable.......2007-08-22

Returning from my first trip to Italy, I remembered this movie's timeless love story that I had seen as a college student. Watching it again helped me prolong the magic sensations that a trip to Rome provides. The music was great, the scenery true to life, the characters believable for that era. I will watch this movie every year, to rekindle my own visit to that famous city and its romantic fountain.The Complete Communicator: Change Your Communication-change Your Life!

Oldie but goodie.......2007-07-06

The first six or seven minutes are a travelogue of Rome and worth the price of the DVD. Frank Sinatra sings the title song. Just sit back and enjoy. The story is dated but that's half the fun.

a gorgeous travelogue & interesting insight into social mores of 50 years ago.......2007-05-12

there are worse ways to wile away an evening than revisiting this (in its own way) fascinating look at the 1950s. this is not the world of douglas sirk, tho it may have many of the same characteristics. its a world where independent women wind up with the guys they love, and everybody manages to dress well. the movie is gorgeous to watch, a prime example of how cinemascope was utilized to lure fans who were deserting their weekly movie habit in favor of television. a great travelogue for roma and its environs, and of course theres that infectious theme music which youll never shake.

Excellent family film.......2006-12-21

This is a very powerful film with an excellent message. Know what is really important in life and never give up. Patrick Swayze plays a drifter with the power to grant wishes. Swayze does a great job in this film and makes his character fairly realistic. Joseph Mazzello (The Tissue King) puts his best foot forward showing why he's cast in so many tear jerkers. I love this film and have it in my collection.

Joe Mazzello is the Genius of this Film.......2006-10-20

I own this film and have seen it 3 times. So WHY, after a plethora of reviewers, do I now write a review? The answer is simple: Joe Mazzello.
Before I elaborate, I must give credit to Patrick Swayze, and to Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. They had moments in the film that were spectacular in all candor. No one doubts their talents, and this movie further supports my assertion.

But, back to Joe Mazzello. Joe is a 1990s and 21st Century acting phenomenon. He always gives 110% and I am almost certain that ALL of his takes are almost indistinguishable due to their consistency. He is THAT good, and this movie shows it. I believe that this movie was the FIRST REAL showing of his genuine capabilities ... capabilities elaborated upon and confirmed in 1997's "Star Kid" and in 1998's "Simon Birch."
I swear, Joe's portrayal was so convincing, that by the movie's end I vicariously wanted to buy an old-style bicycle, don a tee shirt, jeans and tennis shoes, and head to the field and play some baseball!
Joe Mazzello's motto about acting is this: "Just make it look REAL!"
And Joe made it look real in "Three Wishes." So, how do I know? I remember watching the Mickey Mouse Club on TV, in the 1950s. Joe was as real as it gets.

Great film.......2005-11-26

I've watched this several times and have thoroughly enjoyed it every time.
I especially liked the behind the scenes story narration by director Coolidge, a second copy of the movie can be viewed with Coolidge's voice-over describing and explaining how the film was shot, backgrounds on the actors, sets and scenes- now THAT was a real cool bonus I haven't seen before.

Christmas Tradition.......2007-08-03

In Norway this movie has been a tradition to view every single christmas morning since early 90's i guess. (Our christmas is celebrated on 24th, Not on 25th as in US) I love this movie! It really reminds me about my childhood, and i still, as 22 years old, can't stop spending the Christmas morning by watching this together with others of my family! Our version is dubbed to Norwegian and i really wanted to find it with its original Checz-spoken language. After a lot of research then i finally found it here and i am happy for that. Finally i can watch it as it was published in 1973. I have always wondered about how the actors/actresses really sounds.

I will dearly recommend everyone to see this movie, wether you're old or young, man or woman, this is a great movie!!! You'll love it!

Fairy Tale.......2006-11-06

I am Czech,and this movie reminds me my childhood. This is a classical fairy tale, which was played in my country every year before christmass. The movie is well done. Cinderella is more adventurous compared to the original story by brothers Grimm.

A beautifully well constructed movie. From the very beginning, the destiny of Cinderella and the prince is sealed. When one of her friends servant asks her what she would like to have back from town, she simply answers: "Just bring me the first thing that will fall on your nose." (phrase actually taken from the brothers Grimms'tale.) And so it does happen, with the help of the prince, though, who, wanting to make a joke on the servant, shoots an arrow targetting a nest on a tree branch. He doesn't miss (for something he's the prince) and the nest falls on the servant's head. He finds inside three chestnuts on a twig. Three chestnuts because, as the original title says: "Three Chestnuts for Cinderella." Each contains what will make Cinderella happy, closing the loop perfectly. Libuse Safrankova is absolutely cute and wonderful in her role, performed with talent. Pavel Travnicek, who plays the prince isn't that good, but his awsome outfits hide a bit his lack of talent. The stepmother is "awfully perfect", and even funny when she wears that unbelievable umbrella hat with ridiculous dignity.

My five year old son watches this movie since he's three and never stopped loving it, although he's now used to 3D animation movies such as those from Disney-Pixar and Dreamworks. "Three Wishes for Cinderella" is definitely special, beautiful and perfect. Don't miss it.

For an extra information, the German version ("Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel") has been digitally remastered. Not the yellow box version, but the one which presents Cinderella and the Prince on the cover, with a blue label: "DIGITAL überarbeitete FASSUNG" (digitally remastered). The entire movie has been cleaned of all its scratches, the colour enhanced, thus recovering its original aspect of the 1974 release. The audio has not been forgotten as it now offers a new digital AC3 (2 channels) quality. Available also on Amazon, but from Germany. That means: for zone 2 (or region free) players only.

Yo vi esta pelicula cuando era joven y he estado tratando de verla de nuevo a pesar de saber que es checoslovaca , pense que iba a ser casi imposible que existiera en DVD y a cada rato hacia una busqueda a fondo y finalmente la encontre, me dio mucha alegria verla de nuevo y saber que la tengo para verla cuando quiera, mi hija que tiene 10 anos la ha visto 4 veces en 2 dias quedo igualmente impresionada de lo linda que esta la pelicula, muy bien trabajada y con unos paisajes muy bonitos al igual que la musica, (Excelente) Estamos muy felices. Mi puntuacion es la maxima posible.

Warm Hearted!.......2007-01-13

Santa and the Three Bears is one of the Holidays most warm hearted Christmas specials. If this doesn't get you into the Holiday mood, I believe nothing will.

Wonderful story, very poor production..........2006-12-19

Santa and the three Bears is my all time favorite animated feature that I treasure from childhood. No doubt, this is thee program that I must watch each and every Christmas season, and has become treasured by my children as well. In 1987 I taped this program that aired on television. The colors were deep, rich and clear. The sound was crisp. 19 years later, that tape is well loved (used), and although the tape still maintains those qualities; the tape is starting to show its age. Hence, the search for a commerically produced recording.

I searched and searched for a commerically produced recording, and found one in 2001. Unfortunatly, I could only find a VHS recording. No DVD's were to be found. The tape was good except the begining and the ending of the program that had consisted of real life actors (Mr. Ranger and his grand-daughter and grand-son) had been edited out. This editing left me very disappointed. So, when I saw this DVD and read the comment in the reviews that noted the real life characters in the begining and the ending where included in this DVD I was excited and ordered the item right away.

Yes, the real life actors are included as the other reviewer noted. However, it is extremly unfortunate that the transfer is indescribably bad. The frames jump as if you are watching an old film back in grade school. The sound is very scratchy. The colors fade from rich to dull and some scenes are even blurry. It is very difficult to watch the program because the transfer to DVD is so bad. My 1987 VHS and commerical tape that I have present a far greater quality picture/sound than this DVD.

This story is an awesome story.... 5 stars. However, this transfer... this particular DVD stinks! Please, if you are looking for a good quality transfer of this great Christmas tale... don't buy this one. If you have not had the pleasure of viewing this wonderful story yet, this production will sour your experience. If you are looking to find that DVD of a wonderful childhood experience, this production will leave you disappointed. There are other DVD's of this Christmas classic. I guess we are all still looking for that awesome Santa and the three Bears DVD transfer that includes the real life actors. Until I find it, I'm still using the 'ol VHS version.

Happy searching, but please... don't purchase this item. The poor quality of the transfer will leave you extremely disappointed. I find that other reviewers have offered their higher marks for this DVD because the story is such a great story. The story is great. But the presentation of that great story really stinks! Look to other DVD's of this story.

Simply a Classic, and my favorite!.......2006-12-02

I grew up LISTENING to this video, not watching! I had an old LP that my mom had purchased for me through the Weekly Reader club in the late 1970s. I wore this one out!

I had never seen the movie until the "25 Days of Christmas" on ABC Family in the late 1990s! I found it on Amazon.com a couple of years ago--what a treat to have on DVD. And, yes, the video quality is bad, and the pops and crack in the audio, but I simply don't care. It is, afterall, over 30 years old and only $7. Thrilled to just have it once again.

By the way, for a real treat, search for the LP online...you can find it time to time on auctions. Very nice to have...I'm going to convert mine to CD when I get a record player.

The songs, scenery is very soooothing, warming, and just makes me think of great 70s and early 80s Christmas' of past. I highly recommend as a way of passing down a classic--my nieces love it!

Cute Christmas Video For The Children.......2005-11-28

Taken off the back of video: Two cute, wide-eyed Yellowstone National Park bear cubs, who put off hibernation to wait for a visit from Santa Claus, learn an important lesson about the meaning of the Christmas season from the park's friendly ranger. Great Movie.......2005-11-27

This is one of my all time favorite Christmas movies. I'm so glad it's available to buy. My brother and I used to watch this movie everytime it aired during the Christmas season when we were kids and even as adults. I now have two kids of my own and I can't wait to let them watch this Christmas Classic. Truly a great family movie for all ages.

This classic tale is being viewed over and over for more than 30 years in 50 countries all over the world. It has beautiful scenery and music. Story captures your heart. I loved this tale when I was small and still love it now. My three year old daughter wants to play the tape almost every day. It is worth buying it.
