The adventures of pint-sized secret agents Juni and Carmen Cortes (Daryl Sabara and Alexa Vega) continue. As Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over opens, Juni has left the spy agency and launched a career as a private detective--but when he learns that his sister Carmen has disappeared into a nefarious multi-user computer game, he agrees to go in after her, with the assistance of his grandfather (Ricardo Montalban). Three-dimensional special effects launch us into a topsy-turvy world of battling robots, souped-up motorcycle races, frogs on pogo sticks, surfing on hot lava, and much, much more. The story is even more incoherent than an actual computer game--but the movie storms along, driven by writer/director/editor/everything-else Robert Rodriguez's sheer visual enthusiasm. Featuring Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, and everyone else who appeared in the first two Spy Kids movies. --Bret FetzerDescription

Carmen and Juni Cortez will soon find out that their favorite bedtime story, "The Spies Who Fell in Love," is really the story of their parents. So begins this affable fantasy, a James Bond adventure for wee ones with all the trimmings. When Dad and Mom (Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino) mess up their first mission after coming out of retirement, their kids must come to the rescue, equipped with some cool gadgets. The Cortez family gets involved in a bizarre plot hatched by a Pee-wee Herman-type entertainer named Fegan Floop (a wonderfully hammy Alan Cumming) that's as giddy as it is ridiculous. Needless to say there is plenty of derring-do concerning long-lost uncles, goofy monsters, double agents, evil robots, look-alikes, and energized chases. Did we mention the gadgets? Although Banderas and Gugino make terrific impressions, the movie is carried (as it should be) by the younger Cortezes, winningly played by Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara. Who would have thought an action/horror studio (Dimension) and writer-director Robert Rodriguez had this pleasing family film up their sleeves? Rodriquez (who produced with his wife Elizabeth Avellán) seemed to be mired in cheesy horror films but here breaks out by capitalizing on the talent that gave him instant status with his debut, El Mariachi (1992). Spy Kids has plenty of verve but never swerves into potty humor (OK, there is one good potty joke) or wicked gunplay. All 7-year-olds should have a film as fun as this in their movie-going lives. --Doug ThomasDescription
Bursting with an awesome array of ultracool, high-tech gadgetry, SPY KIDS delivers enough thrilling entertainment to satisfy the entire family! Nine years ago, top international spies Gregorio and Ingrid Cortez (Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino) traded the excitement of espionage for the adventure of parenthood! But when they're called out on a secret mission, the Cortezes are separated from their family and kidnapped by the evil Fegan Floop. Fortunately, there are two people who possess the skills and know-how to reunite the family: Carmen and Juni Cortez, their kids! Your family will love every fun-filled second as Carmen and Juni bravely crisscross the globe in a thrilling quest to save their parents. All the while, they discover that keeping the family together is the most important mission in the world for kids and parents alike!Customer Reviews:

This delightful sequel to Spy Kids demonstrates once again writer-director Robert Rodriguez's remarkable gift for wild invention. Carmen and Juni Cortez (Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara) are now regular operatives for a spy agency, but a couple of rival spy kids are making their lives difficult. When an important gadget gets stolen, Juni gets blamed and loses his job--but Carmen hacks into the agency computer, reinstates him, and sends them off on a high-security mission to a mysterious island to clear the boy's name. The pace is zippy, every situation is crammed with dazzling eye-candy, and the cast is great--Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino return as the kids' parents, Steve Buscemi plays a crackpot scientist, and Ricardo Montalban comes in as the kids' grandfather. Fans of the classic Sinbad adventure movies will particularly enjoy the elaborate creatures that Carmen and Juni battle on the island. Pure fun. --Bret FetzerDescription

Mr. Bean meets Mr. Bond in Johnny English, a spy spoof that skewers the genre with Rowan Atkinson's trademark brand of veddy-British slapstick. It's a bit half-baked as a wannabe franchise, but Atkinson's creation of a new screen persona is just promising enough to warrant a sequel, despite critics' complaints that Austin Powers had already exhausted the spy-spoof's potential. Poppycock! Atkinson's gift for physical and, in this case, even verbal humor will surely please his devoted fans, even when a rather tepidly comedic screenplay prevents the British funnyman from reaching new heights of absurdity. As bumbling superspy Johnny English, who gains top-level MI-7 clearance after inadvertently causing a colleague's demise, Atkinson breathes life into gags that are too familiar to earn such an amusing revival. With John Malkovich as a smarmy Frenchman determined to overthrow the British monarchy, and Natalie Imbruglia as Johnny's comely comrade-in-arms, this slight but enjoyable comedy gives Atkinson plenty of opportunity to mug it up as only he can. --Jeff ShannonCustomer Reviews:

Davey Osborne is an imaginative youngster who loves role-playing games, and who often enlists the aid of his best friend, an imaginary super-spy named Jack Flack. One day he witnesses a real murder of an FBI agent who passes a videogame called "Cloak & Dagger" to him before he dies. When the police come, the body is gone, and no one will believe him, including his father, Col. Hal Osborne. Soon Davey finds himself up to his neck in hairbreadth escapes, real bullets, and slam-bang action as the hitmen close in. Can Jack save him before time runs out? Cloak & Dagger stars Henry Thomas of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Dabney Coleman in a dual role of Jack and Davey's father, and Michael Murphy.Amazon.com
Who should a kid's hero be? In this underrated adventure-comedy, that's the central issue. Henry Thomas, fresh from E.T., plays a San Antonio kid whose father (Dabney Coleman) doesn't spend nearly enough time with him. So the boy loses himself in video games--and even has an imaginary friend (also played by Coleman), a super-resourceful secret agent. When he accidentally comes into possession of a spy group's secret plans, and winds up on the run from them, he must learn to rely on himself (and his imaginary pal) to save his skin. But, in the end, Dad proves to be his real hero in this engaging and solid family film. --Marshall FineCustomer Reviews:

A James Bond-style action-adventure film for the tween and teen set based on Anthony Horowitz's book "Stormbreaker," Alex Rider--Operation Stormbreaker is a fast-paced action film shot in and around London that's bursting with suspense, intrigue, high-tech gadgetry, martial arts moves, and intense chase scenes featuring everything from cars and motorbikes to helicopters, quad bikes, bicycles, and horses. Alex Rider (Alex Pettyfer) thinks he's just an ordinary 14-year old kid, but when the uncle that raised him (Ewan McGregor) dies, he soon discovers that his uncle led a secret life as an intelligence agent and that he was secretly grooming Alex for a similar future with special intelligence division MI6. Motivated by revenge against his uncle's killers, Alex takes up where his uncle left off in the investigation of computer mogul Darrius Sayle (Mickey Rourke), delving into his seemingly philanthropic plan to supply a whole new breed of laptops to school children throughout the United Kingdom. Alex's undercover investigation quickly reveals Sayle's true motive and, without any real support or protection from his MI6 supervisors Alan Blunt (Bill Nighy) or Mrs. Jones (Sophie Okonedo) or his quirky housekeeper Jack Starbright (Alicia Silverstone), Alex must somehow prevail against the dangerous Mr. Sayle to safeguard the lives of thousands of innocent people. Comparable to Spy Kids and a step above Agent Cody Banks, Alex Rider--Operation Stormbreaker is an intense, believable film that will captivate viewers ages 10 and older. Bonus features include featurettes focusing on making the book into a film with author and screenwriter Anthony Horowitz, the extensive stunt work performed, the logistics involved in shooting a horse chase through Hyde Park and Piccadilly, visual effects by Baseblack, casting Alex, and the choreography of martial arts master Donnie Yen. --Tami HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:

When fun-loving American agents Dennis Quaid and Kathleen Turner are called back from maternity leave for a special assignment in New Orleans, the spy parents decide to skip the sitter and give their bouncing baby girl the adventure of a lifetime. There's nothing to the dumb story about a deadly arms dealer (Fiona Shaw) in the Louisiana Bayou, but you'd be hard put to find a friskier pair of doting parents. Quaid is all dimpled grins and cocky cool and Turner is the most maternal martial arts mom you've ever seen, but Stanley Tucci almost steals the film as the hot-blooded threat thug Morty ("That's Muerte!"). His macho mission of vengeance becomes pure slapstick silliness punctuated by girlish squeals of alarm. Dumb? Sure, but the deft comic direction of Herbert Ross and bubbly chemistry of Quaid and Turner make Undercover Blues far more fun that it should be. --Sean AxmakerDescription
Kathleen Turner and Dennis Quaid are "in top form [in] this winning comedy" (The Hollywood Reporter) about a couple of super spies persuaded out of maternity leave and into world-class espionage action! Co-starring Stanley Tucci, Park Overall and Tom Arnold, and set in atmospheric New Orleans, Undercover Blues is "guaranteed to leave you giddy and grateful" (The Houston Post)! Jeff and Jane Blue (Quaid and Turner) are the doting parents of a new baby girl. They also happen to be America's best chance at national security. Just as they embark on that perilous adventure known as parenting, they are asked to save the world from a treacherous arms embezzler. But are their martial-arts skills, cunning and high-tech know-how any match for a diabolic terrorist and aten-pound tyrant?Customer Reviews:

Packed with more than 750 dazzling visual effects, this $70 million adventure does more (and less) than give the 1965-68 TV series a state-of-the-art face-lift. Aimed at an audience that wasn't born when the series originally aired, the sci-fi extravaganza doesn't even require familiarity, despite cameo appearances by several of the TV show's original cast members. Instead it's a high-tech hybrid of the original premise with enough sensory overload to qualify as a spectacular big-screen video game, supported by a time-travel premise that's adequately clever but hardly original. It's certainly never boring, and visually it's an occasionally awesome demonstration of special effects technology. But in its attempt to be all things to all demographics, the movie's more of a marketing ploy than a satisfying adventure, thankfully dispensing with the TV show's cheesy camp but otherwise squandering a promising cast in favor of eye-candy and ephemeral storytelling. In keeping with the movie's high-tech appeal, the DVD is a feature-packed marvel, including two audio commentaries, deleted scenes, two featurettes covering special effects and the original TV series (featuring complete biographies and episode guides), the original screenplay, and interactive games. --Jeff ShannonDescription
