Ray Bradbury adapted his own novel for Something Wicked This Way Comes, Jack Clayton's beautiful rendering of the turn-of-the-century fantasy of a mysterious carnival that literally blows into a small town to taunt and tempt the inhabitants. Jonathan Pryce (Brazil), the handsome but demonic proprietor of Dark's Pandemonium Carnival, preys upon the vanities, the delusions, and the regrets of the townspeople by granting their wishes at the expense of their souls. Jason Robards, as the meek librarian Charles Halloway, becomes his unlikely nemesis when his son Will, with his best friend Jim Nightshade (a deliciously dark name in its own right), discovers the secret of Dark's nightmarish carnival. When they become hunted by Dark's minions (including Pam Grier as the beautiful and mysterious Dust Witch), Halloway must confront his own fears and regrets to save the boys. Clayton captures the idyll of childhood in the fall with rich autumnal colors, his camera gliding along with the energetic boys as they tear through field and forests. The climax, however, gets lost in a cacophony of competing special effects, imaginatively visualized but never very terrifying, as if producer Disney resisted the uneasy undercurrent of the story. It's more dark fantasy than horror, a nightmarish adventure filtered through the memory of a man remembering his childhood in mythic terms. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars great adaptation of Ray Bradbury's book.......2007-05-16

this is a great sci-fi movie of good and evil.it is also disney and only rated a pg.

4 out of 5 stars family movie.......2007-05-15

I have loved this movie ever since I was a kid, and was excited to see that it was in DVD. I got it and showed it to my own kids, and they love it as well. It's a good, somewhat scary, family Disney movie. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A fine tribute to one of the master's of 20th century fiction.......2007-02-14

When this movie came out in '83 I thought it was one of the most magical films I'd ever seen. I still do.

5 out of 5 stars Almost a perfect film. . ........2006-12-06

SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES has finally been remastered and reissued by Disney proper, and this is the only way you can see the film in its original 1:85 aspect ratio. Both Widescreen and Pan and Scan versions are provided on the disc. The picture and sound are outstanding, the beautiful October colors of Greentown and its valley well realized. Also included is the original trailer (which hit theatres before James Horner's wonderful score was ready, so other music was used. Pity.)

As for the film itself, it received an unfair drubbing on its original release. No film can truly capture Ray Bradbury's masterpiece of innocence and corruption, triumph and loss, joy and regret, light and dark. Bradbury's poetic prose is intended for the reader, not the speaker. And yet, his own screenplay (he is an accomplished screenwriter, too) comes close. The tone of the film is well balanced, hued in boyhood remembrance. The characters speak not in modern, colloquial English, but in the rich verbiage of the early twentieth century. Their Greentown is as much a creation of the heart as of the hand, where decent people live decent, caring lives.

Into this idyllic autumnal setting comes Cooger and Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show (shortened for the film to Dark's Pandemonium Carnival). It arrives in a dead, black railroad train and sets up in a sudden flash of lightning. The carnival is here to grant your deepest, most special wish, but take care: there is a terrible price to be paid.

Jack Clayton (who was talked out of retirement and signed on as director due to his work on the classic film THE INNOCENTS) brings his sure hand to SOMETHING WICKED, performing a delicate balancing act. Kirk Douglas had been trying to make the film for years through his Bryna Company, and his son Peter brought the project to Disney, which in the early Eighties was trying to break away from its dull Seventies image.

They signed a magnificent cast: Jason Robards, Diane Ladd, Pam Grier, Ellen Geer, Royal Dano, Jack Dodson, James Stacy, Angelo Rossitto, Bruce Fischer and as the demonic Mr. Dark, Jonathan Pryce. As the boys Will and Jim are Vidal Peterson and Shawn Carson. All handle Bradbury's wordsmithing with aplomb, especially old pros Robards and Pryce.

And the music: this film is blessed with one of James Horner's most inspired scores (which, I believe, has never been issued on LP or CD).

Not a horror film as such, but a dark fantasy.

Now, some may argue that the film changes things in the novel, mostly to make it more cinematic. No novel comes to the screen untouched. Ray Bradbury knows that better than most, so when he adapted his own work, he kept the movie medium in mind. Granted, it was a troubled production, and there was much post-production re-editing, but SOMETHING WICKED, I feel, still stands as a rough gem, coming as close to the spirit of the novel as possible.

I like it. I recommend it. 'nuff said.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good And Entertaining Horror Film!.......2006-10-14

This is one of those great horror films which children [not too young] can watch. There is a lot of suspense and thrills which will delight adults and keep children on the edge of their seats. When I first saw the film, I was a little disappointed. However, fast forward a dozen or so years, and I find myself liking this film. The main antagonist in the film is portrayed by Jonathan Pryce. Pryce does an excellent portrayal of Mr. Dark; the evil behind the carnival that has come to a small midwestern town: With promises and wishes that come with a price.

With Halloween around the corner; this is a very good choice for young ones to view a film without the gore so prevalent in so many other horror flicks. The film revolves around two young boys who discover Mr. Dark's secret about his carnival. [children will relate to the kid's]. As they try to thwart the evil, with the help of Jason Robards: one of the boys' father; the film takes off on an eerie and delightlful tale which adults and children will enjoy. Recommended!

This video is clinical and instructional. The actors are everyday types - easier to relate to. My wife wasn't threatened at all by it.

Good choice.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!!.......2006-06-21

Upon purchasing this DVD, I expected it to be the typical educational video...informative, but lacking eroticism. Boy was I wrong!! The talking is left in segents and they do not speak over top of the scenes. The opening scene features Adult Film Stars Wendy Divine and Eric Masterson in the Love Swing. All of the scenes are truly erotic, not soft-focused to the point of fuzziness, and the people featured are attractive for the most part and believable couples. This veideo helps couples explore with adding sex furniture such as the Luv Seat, sex swings and Liberator shapes to the bedroom, incorportaing sex toy play and oral sex, as well as water play to your repertoire. This video also ventures into the "taboos" of the bedroom, such as penetrating yuor male partner and anal play. The bonus videos on the disc are just as intersting as the main video as well! I'd give this video TEN stars if I could!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Loved It! Great Job!!!.......2007-08-19

I loved this movie. It's all about perspective. The love story touched my heart and the chemistry between Boreanaz and Furlong's charachters was awesome. Many people make judgments from a very narrow-minded view of expectation. My outlook comes by simply watching this movie as an entity in and of itself, without thinking that this better be here and that better be there, or it will suck. There is a definite interesting tone here that will be missed by the over-judging skeptic... and that would be a shame, since it really proves for an entertaining ride when allowed to be enjoyed to its fullest. And for the main character, Eddie Furlong makes for a wonderful Crow... Looks, acting, the whole bit... Job well done!

If there were a couple things I could really change, though, it would be to clarify two things: First, the explanation of what actually happened to precious Brewster, Jimmy's beloved dog. I think it is insinuated that Brewster ran off (after not recognizing Jimmy and fearing The Crow) and was ultimately taken in by someone else in the community, but it is never actually expressed and leaves it as a bit of a question mark... And Second, express why Jimmy and Lily never told anyone in the community the reason he killed the guy.

That aside, it is definitely worth the money to buy and time to sit back and immerse oneself in. I am very glad to add this to my DVD collection.

1 out of 5 stars Top 5 worst movies of all time........2007-03-08

This movie is awful, I still can't believe I paid money for it. I want the last two hours of my life back! The good; The concept was really cool, it had real potential and David Boreanez was great. The Bad; The storyline was terrible, aimless and not really cohesive. The acting was awful... the casting was just as bad. The soundtrack wasnt bad but could have been much better, like it didn't quite do the job. The writing and directing was what really made this movie a winner. It was like someone handed the story to a 14 year old kid with no vision. BAD BAD BAD. The really sad thing is this could have been a really great movie, and no, budgeting wasnt the problem. The fight scenes were ok, its just the rest was ridiculous, it just needed half their actors replaced and a director with much more talent. Really a shame.

1 out of 5 stars Did they set out to make a bad movie........2007-02-07

Let me say that I am a big fan of B movies, but this didn't even make that high of grade! The plot was confusing and I never came to care about any of the charecters. Save your money, hit your head against a wall you get get more enjoyment out of that.

3 out of 5 stars Crow movies mixed into one..........2007-01-22

All in all, this movie did not reach out and grab me like the Crow movies of old. It fails to produce a feeling of realism....too much sex talk, too little action...Looking forward to the next one, if there is one...

4 out of 5 stars this film is being highly un-recognized.......2007-01-16

If you were going into this film thinking it's going to be as great as the first one then you'll probably end up disappointed. I've seen alot of bad reviews on this film but this film of all the Crow films is only one that shows any depth to the villains! The story is believeable, the problem is the low budget that made the fight scenes kinda phony cause they could've been alot more realistic & the dance to revive the crow was a little weird but it suited the film none-the-less! another part of the problem was Luke(David Boreanaz) channelling Satan towards the end of the film, his acting started to get over-the-top but thankfully, it didn't last too long. & Dennis Hopper was also a mis-cast here delivering gangsta lingo that doesn't suit the film at all. however, there is alot to like about this film at the same time! unlike the rest of the films, we get flashbacks of Luke's & Lola's(Tara Reid) life, showing why they would be doing the things they are doing now!

Now to the plot: After mining shaft is shut down to build a casino, gang members decide to take revenge & the lead member(Luke) looks to literally raise hell! The protagonist in this film, Jimmy Cuervo(Furlong) is anything but a hero. an ex-con who murdered a guy who was trying to rape Jimmy's girlfriend when in his teens. He is hated by many in town except for Lily(Emmanuelle Chriqui) who sees the good inside of him & is the only thing that keeps him from remaining sane throughout the film! if not for Lily, Jimmy himself would probably be aiding Luke in causing terror around the town. One day, Jimmy goes to propose to his girlfriend when Luke & Lola show up and murder the two of them for a ritual that will help Lola see the future and like Lily used to, she can see the good & bad in people! Luke, on the other hand, becomes amazingly powerful through this ritual. shortly after, Jimmy is revived by the Crow & is deeply torn. He doesn't want to be alive, he wants to be with Lily. the first thing he does is try to kill himself but finds himself invinceable. so with nothing left to do, he decides to take his revenge against Luke & save many lives that Luke is planning to take. but he'll need some help after Luke kills the crow that's keeping him here.

the acting: Edward Furlong- He has the best role here and delivers a powerful performance as Jimmy/The Crow! I think he saved the movie for the most part as he delivered a few good lines that were spot on!

David Boreanaz- Falls apart with his Satan channelling like I said above but the majority of the film is does an excellent job conveying the good & bad in Luke! he shows real depth though not as good as he was on Angel, he does a fine job!

Tara Reid- People should give her credit for trying something different! I thought she did a fine job cause her character shows alot of depth throughout the story! I don't know why anyone doubts her talent here, most of the people I talked were surprised how good she was! I didn't expect anything from so this was a definite surprise!

Emmanuelle Chriqui- Owns this film! without her, Edward's performance wouldn't have meant so much. the two of them can balance out and hold the film together for some of the best scenes in this film have the two of them in it! She's a hell of an actress and does an excellent job conveying the heart & soul her character needed! she shows true passion for the role! too bad I couldn't say the same about the next actor.

Dennis Hopper- I said it before, I'll say it again: No to the gangsta lingo. wasn't his choice but still, out of place, it was just ridiculous.

Macy Gray- Brief & unimportant role in this film. she's not very good either. thank God her role doesn't last more then a minute, otherwise, I would've hated this film.

The rest of the cast is virtually unknown's, to me anywayz. they are all fairly convincing!

The Soundtrack- Ok, this film is set in the desert. would be so ridiculous to have rock tracks in this film. wouldn't suit it at all. instead, they have all instrumental, very unique music that suits the setting perfectly! I'm actually disappointed they didn't have a soundtrack for this movie.

anywayz, I think the acting, the settings, the soundtrack & for the most part, the plot, held this film together! the plot in this film, mine closed to build a casino brings depth to the film that makes everything in this film seem more real! this is a good film, might not be everyone's cup of tea but cause of the low budget and the stupid Luke zooming everywhere toward the end of the movie, it looks worse then it is and people therefore will give it a low rating. but there's alot to like about and I DO RECOMMEND it!

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE WEAKER AFTER DARK OFFERINGS.......2007-09-14

Part of the After Dark Horrorfest, "Wicked Little Things" is a haunting tale of the rural Pennsylvania hill country that has always been rife with legends and tales of ghosts and hauntings. A brief prologue set in 1913 finds a group of very young children forced to work deep in a coal mine. When the owner of the mind demands that a new shaft be blown up, the children are left inside to be buried alive.

Now in the present day, recently widowed Karen Tunny moves to this rural area of Carrolton with her daughters, teenager Sarah, and young Emma. She inherited the house when she found the deed in her husband's personal belongings after his death. The house was owned by his family and has been empty for many years. The Tunnys move there sight unseen, perhaps a bit of a stretch, but there are strong hints that there were serious financial issues and that they had nowhere else to go.

Wicked Little Things is filled with a load of horror film trappings and clichés. There's the weird storeowner who warns them to stay inside after dark, and the crazy neighbor who warns them of the same thing. The plumber assuredly states he wants to be done fixing her pipes before the sun sets...and then does just the opposite and I suppose you can guess his fate. And of course the young daughter seems to have a bit of a rapport with the spirits who haunt the area. It turns out the ghosts of those children buried in the mines prey on whatever they find after dark. Actually ghosts might not be the best word as they feed on their victims, making them more zombies I suppose but not the George Romero type...

The Crazy neighbor, Hanks, is actually protecting the Tunnys by smearing his blood on their front door at night as it seems they won't attack their own blood and Hanks is one of the children's ancestors. The area is suitably creepy, an old, almost primeval forest, protecting its deep, dark secrets. The ghosts/zombies are also fairly creepy with their pale complexions and dark eyes and lips, often smeared with blood.

The plot is fairly straightforward and predictable but then again, most horror films are predictable and part of the fun is the ride towards the end. The main weakness for me were the performances which were all stock horror film specials...vulnerable widow, rebellious teenage daughter, over curious young daughter, etc...Lori Heuring as the Mom just wasn't believable enough nor a strong enough lead to carry the film. She simply looks too young to have a teenaged daughter and just to pretty to play a beaten down widow. Ben Cross plays Hanks and again, he's playing the "Dr. Loomis" role and offers little in any way of an original performance. Interestingly, Scout Taylor-Compton who plays teenaged Sarah has been selected to play the role of Laurie Strode in Rob Zombie's remake of "Halloween."

The DVD extras are very slight. You get only a commentary with the Director J.S. Cardone and Lori Heuring. While the acting is mundane the overall atmosphere of the haunted woods and the creepiness of the ghostly kids lifts "Wicked Little Things" above the ordinary. Not a great film but definitely worth a view on a dark night.

REVIEWED BY TIM JANSON

4 out of 5 stars A Perfect Movie For Halloween.......2007-09-11

I expected this to be a typical b-horror flick. You know, bad acting, cardboard characters and replete with gore, insects and things jumping out and startling you in place of any real scariness/spookiness. I was surprised to find that not only were the principal actors good but the overall film was as well. The filmmakers focused more on creating a spooky atmosphere and working from there instead of taking the cheap way out and creating another trite splatter flick(think John Carpenter's "Halloween", which also had minimal gore, maximum atmosphere).

5 stars are reserved only for the classics. This isn't a classic, but it was a refreshing, enjoyable and welcome effort that hopefully encourages other filmmakers to go for spooky substance over splatter-and-startle cliche'. A very strong 4 star job. I recommend this film and look forward to further work from these filmmakers.

5 out of 5 stars Classic horror film for people who like horror films.......2007-09-02

Pull up a chair, horror fans, and lend an ear (you won't get it back). This film is actually quite good, much better than I expected. It's a movie that hearkens back to those classic horror films of the 70's when movies were about ghosts and mood and awesome scenery, not today's torture/butcher fests by heavy metal wackos posing as directors. Don't listen to the naysayers who are jaded by today's over the top garbage. This film is low-key at just the right times, but also goes for the gross-out when needed. And there's a Classic old-guy-who-knows-too-much performance by Ben (don't call me Barnabas) Cross. It's not a perfect film, but for a dark lonely night on the couch, it's a great little story with creepy little kid/zombie ghosts that now, I swear, I look for in the woods at night, just in case...

3 out of 5 stars As far as these Horrofest flicks go this one wasn't too bad.......2007-08-31

I have definately been very let down by all the horrorfest films up until I checked out this one. It really didn't provide much in the scare department but did have an interesting storyline coupled with some decent acting. Something I couldn't say that about any of the other horrfest films I've seen.

Now I am not saying that this is a great film by any stretch, but I would say it may be worth checking out if you are seeking anything decent from this horrorfest mess.

I had seen part of this movie on digital TV but had missed most of the beginning so I wanted to see it all. I found it a little slow in the beginning and there was not enough historical content for me. However both my wife and I enjoyed.

2 out of 5 stars What a waist of potential.......2007-05-18

This movie could have been great, if there was more of an effort reality in the dialogue. The dialogue is a complete mess, I have been a civil war buff all my life, I've been a reenactor since I was 13 (portraying both sides), I have read every first hand account written by those soldiers that I could get my hands on. Some of these guys may have been illiterate, but they were not stupid, especially the seasoned veterans whom the two main characters are suppose to be. Its extremely hard to believe that they would have been able to go through a full night, especially on the field of battle, completely oblivious to the fact that they are sharing a camp fire with the enemy. It's amazing that through their whole night conversing that none of these strangers asked the other simply "what unit are you with?" or even picking up on the others accents. Even if they had known that they were enemies, the overall storyline could have still stayed intact, since it is well known that friendly exchanges between confederate and union soldiers did occur somewhat frequently outside of combat (although there would have to be some tweaking to Terry Jernigan character). Conversation dialogue for most (not all) is just simply cheesy.

Now for a few positives. The uniforms and equipment were very well researched and authentic. The battle scene in the beginning was very impressive. Personally after watching this DVD the while way through once, I now just watch the first 15 minutes and leave it at that.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-04-01

For not being a big time in the movie house movie, this is VERY well done and worth the price!

5 out of 5 stars Wicked Spring.......2006-03-29

In the dark woods of the Wilderness, lost Civil War soldiers blunder together and spend the night sheltering from the battle.

I liked a lot of things about this movie -- the way that a small number of participants were made to look like whole armies by using terrain (rather than just marching the same guys back and forth past the camera the way small-budget historical films often do); the realism of the battle and battle-aftermath scenes; the appealing, quirky and ultimately doomed characters; the lack of anything immediately noticeable as anachronistic. The film held my attention throughout and I found its conclusion both moving and thematically appropriate.

I wondered why the characters didn't figure out each other's allegiance until dawn (accents wouldn't help? Or the fact that the one guy had coffee and the other tobacco?). And I also question something I see over and over in Civil War movies: no one believes in what he's fighting for. Particularly Southerners. They're all just sort of innocent farm boys who are there because, apparently, they were too dumb to know better. Historically accurate film ought to portray the range of motivations that actuated Civil War soldiers on both sides to fight.

While I liked the dialogue-free quality of the opening scenes, I found their content cloying and only put up with them because I expected that there would be a big contrast coming up.

Having said all that, I liked Wicked Spring very much. I would compare it to much higher-profile Civil War movies such as Cold Mountain and Glory in quality.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect and historically accurate little film.......2005-10-23

This little independent film is just perfect. It is poetry for the eyes. The backdrop of this movie is the American Civil War's Battle of the Wilderness. Written, directed, and produced by Kevin Hershberger the film unfolds like a canvas before your eyes. Shot on location throughout Virginia it gives the viewer a perfect feel for the times in which the story takes place. Six soldiers, a terrible battle, friends, enemies, and waiting love are all in this story. The acting is great too. Brian Merrick as Confederate Harrison Bolding and DJ Perry as Yank John Sunderlin really play well off of one and other. A good part of the story takes place at night when color and affinities are blurred. There is a good lesson here about war and humanity. If you are a Civil War history lover, buff, or whatever buy this DVD.

The premise of Wicked City has been used in a number of other anime features, including Legend of the Overfiend: Earth is linked to a parallel world of demons, whose inhabitants can cross the barrier separating the planets. Dashing Taki Renzaburo, a secret agent assigned to handle invaders from the "Black World," finds himself partnered with Makie, a gorgeous Black World woman. Their assignment: to protect Giuseppe Mayart, a bigwig coming to Tokyo to sign a 500-year peace treaty between the worlds. Mayart, who typifies the sniggering, diminutive lechers who often turn up in anime, hardly seems to warrant all this bother. Protecting him draws Taki and Makie into a series of exceedingly violent encounters with "radicals" from the Black World who oppose the treaty, including their shape-shifting, unkillable leader and a spider-woman with fanged genitalia. Blood and gore fly amid scenes of rape, torture, shootings, slashings, and exploding bodies. Yoshiaki Kawajiri directs skillfully, although the simian Mayart never blends into the realistic world of the film. Wicked City was a landmark work when it was released in 1987, and it retains a cult following. But many subsequent features--notably Mamoru Oshii's darkly brilliant Ghost in the Shell--have eclipsed it. Not rated; suitable for ages 18 and up for nudity, sexual situations, profanity, rape, violence, grotesque imagery, and violence against women. --Charles Solomon

    Description

When Desire Turns Deadly, There's No Place to Hide...

For centuries, a secret peace treaty has existed between Earth and the Black World, a parallel dimension populated by shape-changers possessing awesome supernatural powers. But now, that pact is up for renewal and a militant faction from the Black World plans to do everything in their power to stop the treaty from being signed. The fate of the world now rests in the ability of a pair of special agents, one human, the other a shape-changer from the distaff dimension, to make sure things go according to plan.

In WICKED CITY, director, Yoshiaki Kawajiri blends stylish eroticism, graphic horror and pulse-pounding action in such a way that it is easy to forget that it's only a cartoon.

Not Rated: Contains violence, nudity and sexual situations. Parental discretion advised.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Chapter In the Development of Anime.......2007-07-17

I was surprised when I found out about this movie. I hadn't realized the director of Ninja Scroll had any other credits involving animated movies previous to Ninja Scroll.

The storyline is reasonably engaging. I watched it in Japanese with English subtitles, since bad dubbing or voice-acting can ruin a movie for me. I must admit that the animation is a bit primitive by today's standards--even when compared only to cell-drawn animation--but it wasn't really a big enough problem to detract from the movie. There are a few instances in which presumably contemporary (to the movie's production) pop music intrudes upon the soundtrack; the music sounds dated and awkward in such a context but it only happens two or three times and fortunately only lasts thirty seconds or so. The movie does suffer somewhat from some of the common problems found in anime such as ambiguous plot and vague action scenes and resolution. Despite these minor flaws, I think this movie was definitely worth watching.

2 out of 5 stars The city is wicked... and horny as he11 too........2007-06-12

I first saw Wicked City about 13 years ago if that. I didn't like it then but I forgot the reason why I did. I bought it recently but my dislike isn't as great.

Wicked City has a decent story. The plot is alright, character development isn't too bad but the soundtrack is pretty bad. And not in a good way either. The story is; another world inhabited by demons exist parallel with our world. Due to an ancient pact. There is a peace treaty between the worlds which keeps everyone at peace. Now the treaty is almost over and its time to renew it. To do this a certain man must be protected until the new treaty is done. The main characters which are male and female represent both worlds and are ordered to protect this man. However things go wrong and a new twist is added. They add a secondary main character which is the man who must be protected. He adds some comedy relief and it does pay off. Some of his antics and his dialogue is pretty funny.

The action scenes are alright. And the anime has some interesting villians. The level of exoticness pushes the envelop and for some may go too far. One of the characters is a female spider who spins webs from her front lower region and she's nude on each of her appearances. Also to include there are a few rape scenes and sex scenes. But the rape scenes can truly be disturbing because of the length.

I found this anime somewhat ok all the way until the ending and the final battle. I wont say this anime is highly recommended. Get it only if you have the spare cash, can find it cheap or if your not bothered by certain things. This anime isn't for kids or people who find rape scenes of any type(visible or not) very disturbing.

5 out of 5 stars Not received the item yet!! (the order date is 28 Oct, 06!!!).......2007-01-10

I know that the movie is great, but I missed the theatre release in Hong Kong. Also I cannot find the DVD in HK. Please, send the item ASAP. (I don't mind used one)

2 out of 5 stars Wicked What ?.......2006-09-08

I am a huge fan of Ninja Scroll and Fist and I have been waiting a good minute to see this movie. The Animation is GREAT but there is NOT enough action and way too much POINTLESS nudity, and I totally LOVE nudity. Ninja Scroll's nudity was always followed up by scenes of intense-fast action and much gore. This nudity is just there, there is no follow up. There are a few mediocre action scenes but that's about it. It's still cool to watch but I'm still dissappointed that I bought it. The animation is awesome to watch I just wish it was faster with more action. That's all folks!

5 out of 5 stars Kawajiri is the man!!.......2006-03-19

Yoshiaki Kawajiri is one of the best Japanese animators of all time, and this is his best work. People say this pales in comparison to Ninja Scroll, I don't think so, I think this is better (NS is still awesome though). Don't listen to the one-star reviewers, they're probably some fat gothic vampire chicks who call themselves "otakus," masturbate to InuYasha, listen to nu-metal, and think any anime that wasn't released after 1999 is "stupid" or "retarted."

Now to this anime, its about this secret agent named Taki Renzuboro, whose quite a hit with the ladies and his job is to protect an old ambassador named Giosuppi Mayart (who looks like a cross between Yoda and Ren Hoek), Giosuppi has to sign a treaty to keep the humans and Black World residents from killing each other. Taki has a big-ass gun that can blow his enemies apart (much like an elephant gun). Taki's accomplise is a hot chick from the Black World named Makie, who kills her foes with the fingernails on her left hand that grow very long when she attacks. Taki and Makie have to keep themselves from delving into their imtimate urges for each other while protecting that horny old fart.

The animation is pretty damn good for an anime made in 1987 (when I was born), and the characters look great while looking completely unique from most other anime. This is NOT for kids, there's very little bloodshed (lots of action though), but there's lots of nudity and sex, and the "spider-woman" has fanged genitalia, Jesus thats evil!! The only boring part of this feature was the soundtrack, if they put some Black Sabbath in it, this would have been on par with Akira. The English dubbing was also done well, an A+ anime.

If my dear good friends Pete, Mills, and B. Vitali are reading this, you should watch this, I know you guys will love it.

If you're a fan of anime from the 80's/early 90's and crave lots of action/violence/nudity, you'll love this, and vote "yes." If you're some Adult Swim whorring "otaku" whose obcessed with FLCL and Trigun, click "no."

PS, I think Hayao Miyazaki is overrated beyond belief, Yoshiaki Kawajiri runs circles around him.

    4 out of 5 stars Intriuging.......2006-02-25

I am a great fan of Julia Stiles and she really keeps your
interested in this film. All through it her excellent acting
ability comes across and the ending absolutely blows you away.

2 out of 5 stars How Did This Get An "R" Rating???.......2006-01-23

I'm going to get right ot the point here. This movie is WAY too drawn out. The acting by anyone besides Ms. Stiles is trivial, non-believable, and just plain bad. The plot will keep you guessing until just about the end...and that is the best I can say.

Now, for my blast at the rating...

The movie is rated "R". The opening pre-credit says, "contains explicit sexuality". When I'm warned about something, I expect to see it. There isn't so much as a nude scene in this film. The "R" is actually for language...dropping the F-Bomb a couple times.

Lame and not worth the time.

    4 out of 5 stars Comic Tragedy.......2004-06-25

Okay, I've read some of what my fellow reviewers have said about this film and some are wrong. Folks, you may not want to believe this, but there really are people out there like this. Yes, there really are cheesy detectives and there really are kids like the Julia Stiles character, Ellie. As a matter of fact, Ellie resembles a highly developed RAD diagnosis. They are manipulative, they are obsessive, and they have no empathy. They can kill without a care if it suits their plan.

You may laugh at this film, as reality through Ellie's eyes can be so absurd that it's funny, but overall, the film has more truth to it than you may want to admit.

1 out of 5 stars Aspires to be like a good DePalma film and fails........2004-04-07

After seeing this straight-to-DVD title, I can easily understand why it was not given a theatrical release. It aspires to be like a good Brian DePalma film, with generous helping of ultra-dark comedy, a labyrinth, thriller/mystery plot, and odd camera angles. Unfortunately, the comedy is not funny, there is no suspense, and the direction appears to be that of a director whose skill never made it past film-school level. One of the main problems is that the protagonist's relationship with an advesary does a complete 180 degree-turn with little to no explanation/rationalization (you'll understand when and if - heaven forbid - you sit through this film). The only thing to really recommend the title is a decent performance from the then-unknown Julia Stiles in her debut but, again, the uninspired direction sinks the film at every turn. Stiles has stated in print that this was her favorite film role. Logical, really, as her acting far outshines every other spect of the movie but, if I were her, I'd try to bury this film by any means possible. I was especially disappointed as director Michael Steinberg co-directed a film I greatly admire: "The Waterdance," a drama starring Eric Stoltz as a paraplegic. Then it all came into focus when I looked up the filmography of the "Waterdance" directors: co-writer/co-director Neal Jimenez (a real-life paraplegic) was responsible for the brilliant "River's Edge" while the only other creative endeavor Steinberg undertook was as one of many co-writers on the painful "Sleep With Me." So, if you like "Waterdance," seek out other Jimenez written films. If you like Julia Stiles, try "State and Main" or "Ten Things I Hate About You." If you like sloppy thrillers which look like they were made for basic cable, by all means, endure "Wicked."

4 out of 5 stars Solid Violent Action.......2007-02-28

The Chronos Tokyo story started at the beginning of this series concludes here. Those familiar with the original Anime series will find quite a few similarities to the new one (understandable seeing as they came from the same source) with the difference that this series makes it far more clear that the story isn't quite over yet.
I like the increased plot for Guyver II enough to make me wish they could have done more with his character.
Overall if you love violent action anime, this will definitely satisfy you

Its hard to watch this and not make comparisons to the original. The dvd itself has 4 episodes. The story's are a lot more detailed and characters have a much longer life span. What I mean is almost everyone, who died in their first appearance in the original, got some time to be developed and it made the story more interesting. Some people love this just because of the updated animation. Well not me. I do like the animation but some of the fight scenes dont come close to the original at all. The fight with Enzyme was terribly toned down from the original. Next to that, this one is nothin at all. However the fight between the guyvers was better than the fight in the original. Also battles with new enemy's makes this shine as well. The voice actors are better to me on this one, except the Chronos Commander. He doesn't sound anywhere near as wicked as in the original. I dont think this new series will appeal to all Guyver fans. I still like it, because what little bit it didn't carry over, it made up in a different way. I'm still going to collect them for the simple fact, I like the Guyver in just about every form. If your new to the Guyver, I say collect this one because it looks better and they're actually going to finish this one. It wont be left half baked like the original. What I like the most is, the wait in between dvd's isn't very long so thats a good thing.

    5 out of 5 stars Vol 2.......2007-01-08

What can I say. I love it. I have always been a huge fan of the Guyver and how can you not? I know some people had said some stuff about Vol 1. Well vol 2 it gets better. I personaly loved Vol 1 I have seen all the eps so I know everythng but not in english.

If you thought Vol 1 is ok then get Vol 2 with the box. It's amazing i love it. Vol 2 will leaing you hanging and wanting more Guyver. Sadly you will have to wait another 2 months until Vol 3 comes out but it will be worth the wait.

If your the fan of the Guyver then you should know you need to buy this along with vol 1 if you have not done so already. If you are looking for a new anime to get into. I say hurry up and buy Vol 2 with the box while you can and get Vol 1. This is an amazing anime series that has been around for a long time and hopefully will continue for a very long time.
