Ever spend eight hours in a "Productivity Bin"? Ever had worries about layoffs? Ever had the urge to demolish a temperamental printer or fax machine? Ever had to endure a smarmy, condescending boss? Then Office Space should hit pretty close to home for you. Peter (Ron Livingston) spends the day doing stupefyingly dull computer work in a cubicle. He goes home to an apartment sparsely furnished by IKEA and Target, then starts for a maddening commute to work again in the morning. His coworkers in the cube farm are an annoying lot, his boss is a snide, patronizing jerk, and his days are consumed with tedium. In desperation, he turns to career hypnotherapy, but when his hypno-induced relaxation takes hold, there's no shutting it off. Layoffs are in the air at his corporation, and with two coworkers (both of whom are slated for the chute) he devises a scheme to skim funds from company accounts. The scheme soon snowballs, however, throwing the three into a panic until the unexpected happens and saves the day. Director Mike Judge has come up with a spot-on look at work in corporate America circa 1999. With well-drawn characters and situations instantly familiar to the white-collar milieu, he captures the joylessness of many a cube denizen's work life to a T. Jennifer Aniston plays Peter's love interest, a waitress at Chotchkie's, a generic beer-and-burger joint à la Chili's, and Diedrich Bader (The Drew Carey Show) has a minor but hilarious turn as Peter's mustached, long-haired, drywall-installin' neighbor. --Jerry Renshaw

Description

Unable to endure another mind-numbing day at Initech Corporation, cubicle slave Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston) gets fired up and decides to get fired. Armed with a leisurely new attitude and a sexy new girlfriend (Jennifer Aniston), he soon masters the art of neglecting his work, which quickly propels him into the ranks of upper management! Now the stage is set for Peter to carry out a high-tech embezzling scheme that's sure to mean the end of his job and a one-way ticket to easy street. Can he pull it off before all corporate hell breaks loose?

5 out of 5 stars This Movie is Hilarious!!!.......2007-09-13

This movie is so funny, my husband and I can't get enough of it. This is not one for kids to watch with lots of bad language and rap songs in this movie. A lot of the business aspects of this movie you can relate in some way or another. I highly recommend this movie if you want a good laugh!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Classics.......2007-09-03

This is in my top 5 movies of all time. My other favorites include Monty Python The Holy Grail, and Dumb and Dumber.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutly pure genius.......2007-08-27

This has been a favorite of mine for a while, if you havn't seen it then treat yourself, if you have then you know what I mean!

4 out of 5 stars realistically funny for the office worker.......2007-08-23

This movie is hilarious.... I thought it was amazing as I watched it in college; however now that I have a full-time job, the funny parts of this movie are things I encounter on a day-to-day basis.

4 out of 5 stars A timeless movie that (frighteningly) will never grow old.......2007-08-22

As long as corporate America insists on treating people like farm animals or widgits, Office Space is going to hit home on several levels: It is a wickedly funny parody of life as a Cube Farm inhabitant; it is dead-on in all the silly and ultimately pointless exercises that upper management goes through to justify itself; and it caters to every worker's fantasy of some day Stickin' it to The Man.

There are numerous weirdly comical moments, as when the lead character, Peter Gibbons, is reclaiming his life and his sanity at the office while a rap song about "it's good to be a gangster" booms in the background; and the hysterical juxtaposition of white, straight-arrow geek programmer Michael Bolton swaying in his car to some truly off-color rap lyrics. The mumbling, goggle-eyed character Milton Waddams (EVERY office has one, you know it does) almost steals the whole show with his obsessiveness about his red Swingline stapler.

I have worked with many of the characters in this movie, and only wish that, like Peter, I had recognized far earlier in my "career" that people are not meant to live in fabric-lined enclosures and fret over things like mission statements and TPS reports.

Although the movie is a bit dated now in terms of how people dress, etc., and the rap songs in the soundtrack might be offensive to some, Office Space is a movie you will want to watch several times, so you can absorb all of the lessons it has to offer.

Could this be the funniest movie ever made? By any rational measure of comedy, this medieval romp from the Monty Python troupe certainly belongs on the short list of candidates. According to Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide, it's "recommended for fans only," but we say hogwash to that--you could be a complete newcomer to the Python phenomenon and still find this send-up of the Arthurian legend to be wet-your-pants hilarious. It's basically a series of sketches woven together as King Arthur's quest for the Holy Grail, with Graham Chapman as the King, Terry Gilliam as his simpleton sidekick Patsy, and the rest of the Python gang filling out a variety of outrageous roles. The comedy highlights are too numerous to mention, but once you've seen Arthur's outrageously bloody encounter with the ominous Black Knight (John Cleese), you'll know that nothing's sacred in the Python school of comedy. From holy hand grenades to killer bunnies to the absurdity of the three-headed knights who say "Ni--!," this is the kind of movie that will strike you as fantastically funny or just plain silly, but why stop there? It's all over the map, and the pace lags a bit here and there, but for every throwaway gag the Pythons have invented, there's a bit of subtle business or grand-scale insanity that's utterly inspired. The sum of this madness is a movie that's beloved by anyone with a pulse and an irreverent sense of humor. If this movie doesn't make you laugh, you're almost certainly dead. --Jeff Shannon

Python at their best. This set is highly recommended and will be an essential part of any Monty Python Collection.

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest movies of all time........2007-08-27

Without doubt, one of the funniest movies of all time. Even funnier than Life Of Brian and just as quotable.

4 out of 5 stars A tear jerker!.......2007-08-24

What can I say? I laughed until I cryed when I saw both Monty Python and the Holy Grail. And Borat did the same thing to me.

Really, that says more about me than the films, so don't think that these two films are anything alike beyond making made me silly, but maybe it might be helpful to you.

Maybe not.

5 out of 5 stars After 30 plus years, it is still outrageously funny!!.......2007-08-04

After watching the musical production Monty Python's SPAMALOT this summer I could not resist in purchasing the DVD of this 1975 movie featuring the greatest comedy troupe ever! Here we are, 30 years later and it is still the most outrageous film with Monty Python. I think the real attribute is the work of Terry Gilliam's animation that was featured. This is a must for all Python fans and for those who have seen or plan to see SPAMALOT! Buy this DVD..You won't be disappointed!!!

Description

Rootless Hungarian émigré Willie (John Lurie), his pal Eddie (Richard Edson), and visiting sixteen-year-old cousin Eva (Eszter Balint) always manage to make the least of any situation, whether aimlessly traversing the drab interiors and environs of New York City, Cleveland, or an anonymous Florida suburb. With its delicate humor and dramatic nonchalance, Jim Jarmusch's one-of-a-kind minimalist masterpiece, Stranger Than Paradise, forever transformed the landscape of American independent cinema. Also included in this special-edition release is Jarmusch's legendary debut feature, Permanent Vacation, a time capsule of late-seventies Manhattan, on DVD for the first time in the United States

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Honeymooners by way of Ozu.......2007-09-07

Stranger Than Paradise not only announced the arrival of an original filmmaker with Jim Jarmusch, but also signaled the arrival of a new wave of American independent cinema along with the Coen brothers' Blood Simple and Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It. Jarmusch's film came as a response to the impersonal commercial filmmaking of the Hollywood studios. His film was originally nothing more than a 30-minute short film shot from 40 minutes of extraneous film stock donated by German filmmaker Wim Wenders. Eventually, Jarmusch came into a small sum of money -- $120,000 worth -- and was able to complete the film.

Described by Jarmusch as The Honeymooners by way of Ozu, Stranger introduced his trademark style: minimal sets and long, uninterrupted takes with very little camera movement that are punctuated by the occasional fade to black. It is a funky mix of deadpanned American humour and a European visual sensibility. Stranger was made during the dawn of MTV and its success seems rather odd considering that it was the antithesis of most films being made in America at the time. The rather slow, meandering pace of Stranger did not conform to the quick cut, music video style that was fashionable at the time. His characters also lacked any sort of real ambition which was a world apart from most mainstream films. His approach seems downright revolutionary now as people's collective attention spans have gotten considerably shorter.

Stranger Than Paradise won the Camera d'or at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival and was soon heralded by many critics as a watershed film in American independent cinema. Much has been written about the film's outsider view of America and to be fair, the sparse visuals and down-on-their-luck hipsters that populate this film certainly flies in the face of the materialism of the 1980s, making it just as unique and significant today as it was back then.

Fans of this film can finally toss the crappy, bare bones MGM DVD as Criterion has given Jarmusch's film their deluxe treatment.

Perhaps the most substantial extra is the inclusion of Jarmusch's feature film debut, Permanent Vacation (1980). It's about the story of Ally Parker (Chris Parker), the prototypical Jarmusch protagonist - an alienated outsider. Jarmusch's stylistic approach is intact but with an even more non-sensical narrative that seems avant garde in nature.

"Kino '84: Jim Jarmusch" was produced for German television in 1984 and features interviews with some of the cast and crew from Permanent Vacation and Stranger Than Paradise. They all look so young and were just starting out. It's a nice snapshot of the times with the normally media-shy Sara Driver (Jarmusch's significant other) recounting filming anecdotes.

"Some Days in January 1984" is a 14-minute, Super 8 behind-the-scenes silent film shot by Tom Jarmusch. It looks like home movies as we see cast and crew freezing in Cleveland.

"Location Scouting" is a collection of black and white photographs taken while Jarmusch was checking out locations to use in the film. Sadly, they don't say where in Florida they were but these stills do look excellent.

Finally, there are U.S. and Japanese trailers for the film.

5 out of 5 stars What indy filmmaking is all about!.......2007-08-27

Jarmusch's first and perhaps finest film, a wonderful tale of misplaced identities on a road less traveled. Stranger than Paradise is shot like a travelogue as we follow John Lurie and friends from New York to Cleveland, Ohio, to somewhere in Florida. Lurie's character, Willie, is ostensibly helping out a wayward Hungarian cousin, Eva, but seems to be having a hard time coping with his emigree status as well. Richard Edson offers a wonderful comic foil in Eddie. The film is more held together by Lurie's musical score than it is the sparse dialog. Jarmusch prefers to capture the brooding nature of his characters as they struggle to relate to each other, resulting in a bitter exchange when they find themselves trapped in a non-descript Florida motel. At this point, the film takes a wonderful comic turn as Eva is mistaken for a contact and is given a briefcase full of cash, opening up new horizons. To reveal anymore is to spoil the fun. Stranger than Paradise is what indy filmmaking is all about!

One of the greatest Westerns ever made gets the deluxe treatment on this superior disc from Republic Home Video's Silver Screen Classics line of special-edition DVDs. Written by Carl Foreman (who was later blacklisted during the anticommunist hearings of the '50s) and superbly directed by Fred Zinnemann, this 1952 classic stars Gary Cooper as just-married lawman Will Kane, who is about to retire as a small-town sheriff and begin a new life with his bride (Grace Kelly) when he learns that gunslinger Frank Miller (Ian MacDonald) is due to arrive at high noon to settle an old score. Kane seeks assistance from deputies and townsfolk, but soon realizes he'll have to stand alone in his showdown with Miller and his henchmen. Innovative for its time, the suspenseful story unfolds in approximate real time (from 10:40 a.m. to high noon in an 84-minute film), and many interpreted Foreman's drama as an allegorical reflection of apathy and passive acceptance of Senator Joseph McCarthy's anticommunist campaign. Political underpinnings aside, this remains a milestone of its genre (often referred to as the first "adult" Western), and Cooper is flawless in his Oscar-winning role. The first-rate DVD gives this landmark film all the respect it deserves, beginning with a digitally remastered transfer from the original film negative. Additional features include the exclusive documentary The Making of High Noon, hosted by film historian Leonard Maltin and featuring interviews with the late Lloyd Bridges (who played Cooper's rival ex-deputy), director Fred Zinnemann, and producer Stanley Kramer. Also included is the original theatrical trailer and a special chapter stop highlighting the Oscar-winning song "Do Not Forsake Me." Offered in English and dubbed French and Spanish, with English closed-captioning or Spanish and French subtitles. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars The King and future Princess .......2007-08-23

Gary Cooper was king of western films and Grace Kelly was noticed by the Prince of Monaco enough to be take her as his Princess.

5 out of 5 stars Gary Cooper's Oscar winning performance was well earned for this movie........2007-08-12

Gary Cooper pretty much carries the whole movie as a small town law man who must make one last effort to take down the bad guys in a small town where the people are as cowardly as sheep. By the end of the movie, you feel that Gary Cooper's character was let down by those he thought were his friends and he looks at them coldly as he and his new wife leave.

5 out of 5 stars HIGH NOON, 1 OF HOLLYWOODS GREATEST WESTERNS.......2007-08-09

HIGH NOON, STARRING GRACE KELLY AND GAR COOPER IS A WESTERN CLASSIC THAT LIKE CASABLANCA; WILL REMAIN 1 OF THE ALL TIME GREAT MOVIES OF HOLLYWOOD. THIS REMASTERED COLLECTORS EDITION; IS AS GOOD AS IT WAS; THE FIRST TIME I REMEMBER SEEING IT. ITS 1 OF THOSE WESTERN CLASSICS, YOU WANT TO WATCH OVER AND OVER.

5 out of 5 stars AS GREAT AS MOVIES GET!!!.......2007-08-01

Prior to watching "High Noon", I watched several very good westerns: "The Broken Arrow" and "The Man Who Killed Liberty Valance".

Then comes along "High Noon." All I can say is WOW!

This is not only a great western, it is one of the best movies ever made.

Be sure to watch film historian Leonard Maltin's segment at the end of the film where you will have the privilege of seeing some of the main artists involved in the making of the film talk about it. It is fascinating.

Without Gary Cooper, I don't believe this film could or would have been made. It required an actor who was an ambivert - not totally introverted or he could not have portrayed the role, but not totally extroverted either, or we would not have the nuances of an inner life which shown through Cooper's performance. His was the academy award that year, and it was wholly deserved.

If you haven't seen this film, don't hesitate. I somehow compare it to another great film, "Grand Illusion," also filmed in black and white with a low budget. When the talent, intelligence and integrity are there on the part of every important member of the creative team, these films show us that frills are just what they are: frills.

Don't miss this one and deprive yourself.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic & Inspiring Hero Movie.......2007-07-20

High Noon is truly a classic movie. The story is moving; and of course moves at the rate of "real" time. Gary is superb and subtle playing his charater as moral, firm, sensitive, and when appropriate, kind. Grace is beautiful and ultimately makes a sacrafice and grows as a person and in relationship to the world. I strongly recommend this movie and wish everyone would see it. The soundtrack is also a big winner.

The films of Tim Burton shine through the muck like a jack-o-lantern on a foggy October night. After such successes as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands, it should come as no surprise that Sleepy Hollow is a dazzling film, a delicious reworking of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Dark and moody, the film is a thrilling ride back to the turn of the 19th century. Johnny Depp stars as Ichabod Crane, a seemingly hapless constable from New York City who is sent to the small town of Sleepy Hollow to solve the mystery of the decapitations that are plaguing the town. Crane is a bumbling sort, with a tremendous faith in science over mysticism, and he comes up against town secrets, bewitching women, and a number of bodies missing heads. Christina Ricci, as beautiful as ever, is Katrina Van Tassel, the offbeat love interest who alternately charms and frightens Crane.

The film, while occasionally gory (as one should expect from a movie about a headless horseman), is not terribly frightening, although it is suspenseful. Both Depp and Ricci are convincing, and the art direction and production values give the village its harsh feel. Toward the end, once the secrets are revealed, the film does slow down; however, this stylistic horror film provides many tricks and even more treats. --Jenny Brown

5 out of 5 stars An entertaining albeit gruesome movie.......2007-09-10

This was the first Tim Burton movie that I have ever watched before. I saw it a couple of months ago. I still remember it, so it made quite an impression on me.

The casting was impressive. Not just the leading roles, but the supporting ones as well. Johnny Depp's character was really eccentric in this movie. It was such a huge change from his pirates movies. I did not know if he could pull it off and be convincing or not. He was, I'll admit. Christina Ricci did an excellent job in this movie. She has grown into a talented and underrated actress over the years. The setting, the sets, and the period costumes were perfect. The location chosen looked authentic and creepy.

However, the star of this movie was the score by Danny Elfman. It is an essential part of the movie. It is a creepy heart pounding adventure that stands alone. I liked the movie, but I absolutely loved the score. I purchased it from Amazon the very next day.

I highly recommend that you purchase both this movie and the score from Amazon, before the Halloween rush. :)

4 out of 5 stars Good Movie.......2007-08-24

If you can wade through Icabod's dreams about his mom, it is really a very good movie. A good mix of Police Files meets Night Gallery (sorry you young ones can't relate). Not overly graphic in terms of todays slasher flicks. A good spooky movie.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious Gothic Feast.......2007-08-04

This movie has some of Johnny Depp's most loveable moments as an idiosyncratic lead actor. It also provides an 18th century New England fantasy world you will love to get lost in. I adore it. I don't think anything else Tim Burton has done can top it (though others are equally satisfying like The Corpse Bride or Edward Scissorhands).

4 out of 5 stars Good goth flick.......2007-06-13

I like this movie. The atmospherics are awesome, the director is awesome, Jonny Depp is in it...

4 out of 5 stars A Classic Tale Reimagined..........2007-05-26

1999's "Sleepy Hollow" is Director Tim Burton's excellent reimagining of the classic Washington Irving fairy tale. Johnny Depp steals the movie as Ichabod Crane, in this version a New York City police constable with new-fangled and unwelcome investigative techniques who is exiled to Sleepy Hollow by an unhappy magistrate (Christopher Lee in a spot-on cameo). Crane arrives in Sleepy Hollow (authentically portrayed as a post-American Revolution farming community) to find a string of unsolved murders attributed to the headless but ambulatory corpse of a Hessian soldier.

Crane finds also a town full of intrigues and mysterious goings-on, which he will patiently unravel with the help of Katrina Van Tassel (nicely played by Christina Ricci) who turns out to have secrets of her own. A solid supporting cast helps carry the movie.

Burton lays on an escalating series of horrible murders, each with supernatural overtones, that challenge both the investigative techniques and the rational beliefs of Ichabod Crane. Each such scene is nicely creepy without overindulging the gore. As it turns out, a genuine horror has been unleashed in Sleepy Hollow. The betrayal of the long-deal Hessian is at the heart of his current incarnation as a killer. Ichabod will have to dealt with his own bitter experience with witchcraft in order to identify the guilty and save the innocent.

This movie is highly recommended to those looking for an entertaining and well-executed update of a classic fairly tale, featuring fine direction and excellent if sometimes campy acting.

Directed by Sidney Lumet (Serpico) and penned by Joel Schumacher (Batman and Robin), this lavish 1978 adaptation of the Broadway hit The Wiz was the biggest production filmed in New York City up to that point, utilizing the newly revamped Astoria Studios and locations around the city. Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, and Ted Ross (reprising his Tony-winning role as the Lion) star in this Academy Award-nominated musical for the whole family.

The Wiz is probably the grandest take on L. Frank Baum's classic tale The Wizard of Oz. The production team created sets with a sense of urban magic and spectacle: a New York subway station literally comes to life, and the massive plaza between the World Trade Center towers is transformed into the Emerald City, featuring nearly 400 dancers with three costume changes. Like all good musicals, the Quincy Jones arrangements are highly hummable long after viewing (especially the funky "Ease On Down the Road" and the inspirational "Brand New Day"). In an era before MTV, the camera stays nearly stationary as Ross and Lena Horne vocally soar through their numbers. Their stage-like performances successfully make the leap to film, making The Wiz a testament to their singing talents and star presence. The then-thirtysomething Ross raised some eyebrows playing the traditionally teenaged Dorothy, but she and her supporting cast (including Richard Pryor as the Wiz) carry the tunes with an infectious verve that will appeal to folks of all ages. --Shannon Gee

3 out of 5 stars A classic for historical reasons, not artistic ones........2007-08-13

The movie is indicative of the era in which it was produced. But more than that, "The Wiz" was the first real black musical, and for that reason, is dear to the heart of America. Dianna Ross and Michael Jackson are entertaining at best in this movie. Jackson is certainly a better performer overall than Ross.

If this movie, or anything similar to it were to be presented at this time in history, it would be laughably inept. However, since this movie played an important part in bringing black culture into American arts, it deservs it's place in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting to watch!.......2007-08-03

5 out of 5 stars THE WIZ--AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!.......2007-08-03

I remember when I first saw this movie back in the early 1980s when I was a young girl. I adore this movie. Even though I'm 30 years old, I'm still young at heart. Even though I feel that Diana Ross was too old for the role, I still think that this musical was and still is a superb movie. You have to understand something. The reason why I think that The Wiz didn't do so well in the movies back in 1978 was not only because Diana Ross was improperly miscast, but also because white America at the time wasn't ready for African-Americans to remake their favorite all-American whitebread movie that came out in 1939. It was unheard of. If The Wiz was made in the 1990s, it would be very well-received since black movies dominated the 1990s, and blacks were more accepted in white homes in the 1990s, but in 1978, it was a whole different story. They were not ready to have a "nigger" version of "The Wizard Of Oz". It was an insult at the time. Thank God for VHS and DVD. When The Wiz was on VHS and DVD, it was starting to be VERY popular. It was more well-received than when it first hit the theatres in 1978. It became a cult classic, especially within the African-American community. This movie was very spiritual and uplifting that you would think that it's a gospel movie. It sends a motivational message to children, teenagers, and adults that you should never be afraid of acheiving your goals. I love this movie so much. I'm glad that I'm part of the generation that grew up on this movie. I would take this movie over The Wizard of Oz anyday. Let them racist people hate on this movie. The Wiz is here to stay!!!!!!!!

The first time I saw this move, I was about 9years old. I couldn't completely enjoy it because the monkies scared me. Today I can fully apreciate this film. It has a wide range of soulfull cast and motown music. Sit down with your family and watch this movie with a new mind. Leave Judy Garland (Dorathy) with The Wizzard of Oz, and get ready to dance along with the Wiz.

Filmed before (and quite nicely) in 1949, Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic children's story was remade for this admirable 1993 release, executive produced by Francis Ford Coppola and directed by acclaimed Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland. Splendidly adapted by Edward Scissorhands screenwriter Caroline Thompson, the film opens in India during the early 1900s, when young Mary Lennox (Kate Maberly) is orphaned and sent to England to live in Misselthwaite Manor, the gloomy estate of her brooding and melancholy uncle, Lord Craven (John Lynch). Because the uncle is almost always away on travels, struggling to forget the death of his beloved wife, Mary is left mostly alone to explore the estate. Eventually she befriends the young brother of a staff maid and Lord Craven's apparently crippled son, who has been needlessly bedridden for years. Together the three children restore a neglected garden on the estate grounds, and in doing so they set the stage for a moving reaffirmation of life and love. Filmed with graceful style and careful attention to the intelligence and cleverness of young children, The Secret Garden is that rarest breed of family film that transcends its own generic category, encouraging a sense of wonder and optimism to become a rewarding experience for viewers of any age. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Wings n Things The Secret Garden.......2007-08-16

This master piece addresses many levels of our mind and heart at once. It carries a basic moral lesson that unconditional love heals. It is however much more powerful than that. It engages a (perhaps more mature ) reader into archetypal realms of the mind at large, where we all seek 'our own key', that will open the door to our personal and collective 'hidden' inner sanctuary, haven and place of profound inner healing.
I highly recommend this book for children ( of all ages) with a chronic or physically debilitating illness, when they are feeling most isolated and alone. It offers hope, the potential to 'really believe' in their own possibility of healing..on many levels. Plus the more simple joy, of a magical tale one just might get delightufully lost in for while ...emerging with new sparks of imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Top Quality in Children Entertainment.......2007-07-08

I have watched this movie several times in the company of small children who seemed to enjoy the storyline so well.

Mary is young girl from British parents who is born in India and when an earthquake kills them, she is orphaned and sent to live with an uncle in a very sinister looking manor in England. She experiments to find secret passageways (all Gothics are full of secret passageways) but end up finding a secret garden instead. The housekeeper (Maggie Smith does everything she can to limit the child's actions but to no avail, as the girl has a mind of her own.)

The sad tale behind the garden is that the mistress of the manor died giving birth to an invalid child after falling out of the garden swing. The garden is then shut up and forgotten along with the memory of the dead wife.

Mary, Kate Moberly plays a dynamic little girl who continues to explore until she discovers a groaning, crying sound in the night which turns out to be a bedridden cousin. This cousin has been kept bedridden in error by the housekeeper who has misdiagnosed his condition to be something far more serios than it truly is.

Heyden Prowse could plays the crippled male cousin. Mary takes Colin(Heyden) out of doors and eventually he walks. The story is very predictable but nevertheless, done is such a way that it appear new.

This author knows how to tell a tale to children even if you can predict the outcome. it is all in the storytelling and the film maker flattered the book. This is a very endearing story...would bw greart subject matter for children's classrooms.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-05-13

A good adaptation of a wonderful children's story. More importance is placed on the "magic" of the story than on the faith in the story. Faith, Prayer, Hope and Love of God are what created the magic and this is not emphasized as it is in the book. This was disappointing, but other than that the setting was beautiful and allowed our imaginations to fill in the gaps that were emitted from the movie that F. H. Burnett had written. A wonderful family movie.

Fantastical writer Gary Ross (Big, Dave) makes an auspicious directorial debut with this inspired and oddly touching comedy about two '90s kids (Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon) thrust into the black-and-white TV world of Pleasantville, a Leave It to Beaver-style sitcom complete with picket fences, corner malt shop, and warm chocolate chip cookies. When a somewhat unusual remote control (provided by repairman Don Knotts) transports them from the jaded real world to G-rated TV land, Maguire and Witherspoon are forced to play along as Bud and Mary Sue, the obedient children of George and Betty Parker (William H. Macy and Joan Allen). Maguire, an obsessive Pleasantville devotee, understands the need for not toppling the natural balance of things; Witherspoon, on the other hand, starts shaking the town up, most notably when she takes basketball stud Skip (Paul Walker) up to Lover's Lane for some modern-day fun and games. Soon enough, Pleasantville's teens are discovering sex along with--gasp!--rock & roll, free thinking, and soul-changing Technicolor. Filled with delightful and shrewd details about sitcom life (no toilets, no double beds, only two streets in the town), Pleasantville is a joy to watch, not only for its comedy but for the groundbreaking visual effects and astonishing production design as the town gradually transforms from crisp black and white to glorious color. Ross does tip his hand a bit about halfway through the film, obscuring the movie's basic message of the unpredictability of life with overloaded and obvious symbolism, as the black-and-white denizens of the town gang up on the "coloreds" and impose rules of conduct to keep their strait-laced town laced up. Still, the characterizations from the phenomenal cast--especially repressed housewife Allen and soda-shop owner Jeff Daniels, doing some of their best work ever--will keep you emotionally invested in the film's outcome, and waiting to see Pleasantville in all its final Technicolor glory. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantville .......2007-09-01

This is one of my favorite movies. I love the story and the way they have slowly turned each person from black and white to color. It says so many things in this movie that I just think it one of the best.

4 out of 5 stars Add Color to your Life!.......2007-08-28

A town completely in black and white. Safe. Unexciting. Mundane. That's smallville. However, strange things begin to happen when feelings are introduced. Things that get the town up in arms and into a fight to maintain the status quo! For me this movie is a love story. Difficult to explain without giving it away. Lets call it a date movie. You will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Please get the point of this movie.......2007-08-26

The whole point of the movie was nothing is ever "black and white". We all know that people in the '50's weren't all happy, hunky dory, "pleasant" people. There was just as much crime, drugs, and sex then as now. It was just covered up more.
As the people in the film become less one dimensional they become more complex and thus less "black and white".
WARNING- SPOILERS:

Many reviewers have said that immoral behavior invoked the color. The character Jennifer/Mary Sue has slept with lot of guys when she was in the real world and still does so in this world, so sex does not change her into a color character. Only when she actually finishes a book for the first time in her life, then she becomes colorized. Also, David does not bloom into color until he breaks out of his aloofness and defends his "mother." Compare the way he ignores his real mother at the beginning of the film to how he consoles and comforts her at the end to see how much David has changed. So I guess giving up sex for self-worth and honoring thy mother is immoral.
Life isn't like the shows we watch on tv, not even now. Too many people want life to be like "it was" or like they think it was in the '50's.It never was or is going to be like that. Life is complex and wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Must See--Highly Recommend.......2007-07-31

Reese Witherspoon, Tobey Maguire and cast are splendid in this finely crafted film. Tobey Maguire, screenwriter and director all deserve the highest praise for the most sympathetic character every invented.

This is, in a nutshell, a gorgeous film that offers a new way to look at life and the changes that occurred in the 1960s. The hope and dreams of a generation are embodied not only in the switch to color but the multiculturalist and democratic message that we are all individuals with our strengths and personalities and dreams that cry out to be recognized.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantville.......2007-07-13

"Pleasantville" is a sparkling, witty, highly original film that examines the nasty underside of quaint family values as they are embodied in every age, especially as it critiques the social rigidity of black and white (i.e. prejudice) with its thinly veiled conceit of "color" (i.e. diversity, individuality). William H. Macy and Joan Allen are well cast as the teens' parents, playing nicely off Maguire's low-key, conformist David/ "Bud" and Witherspoon's wild girl. Enhanced by some charming special effects, "Pleasantville" is a blissful comic fantasy with a message of tolerance for us all.

Perhaps only the collective brilliant minds of the Monty Python film and television troupe are up to the task of tackling a subject as weighty as the Meaning of Life. Sure, Kierkegaard, Wittgenstein, and their ilk have tried their hands at this puzzler, but only Python has attempted to do so within the commercial motion picture medium. Happily for us all, Monty Python's the Meaning of Life truly explains everything one conceivably needs to know about the perplexities of human existence, from the mysteries of Catholic doctrine to the miracle of reproduction to why one should avoid the salmon mousse to the critical importance of the machine that goes ping! Using fish as a linking device (and what marvelous links those aquatic creatures make), The Meaning of Life is presented as a series of sketches: a musical production number about why seed is sacred; a look at dining in the afterlife; the quest for a missing fish (there they are again); a visit from Mr. Death; the cautionary tale of Mr. Creosote and his rather gluttonous appetite; an unflinching examination of the harsh realities of organ donation, and so on. Sadly, this was the last original Python film, but it's a beaut. You'll laugh. You'll cry (probably because you're laughing so hard). You may even learn something about the Meaning of Life. 5 out of 5 stars Terry Jones delivers a real winner..........2007-08-23

First off, I would like to preface my review by stating that I have not seen the DVD version of this film -- only the VHS -- so I have no idea about its quality and features. Secondly, I am not a dyed-in-the-wool Python fan. I have never seen either the "Life of Brian" or the "Holy Grail," and am only somewhat familiar with their television offerings. In a way, this makes it easier for me to appreciate the merits of this film itself.

The "Permanent Assurance" short which opens the film is, as others have stated, quite symbolic and pertinent to modern times. The fantasy of the segment is quite evocative of Gilliam's later "Adventures of Baron Munchausen" and is potentially just as off-putting for those who do not appreciate bits of whimsy. It is quite a spectacle and I really enjoyed seeing the later reference to this segment in the middle of the movie. It was fun to see and identify a young Matt Frewer/Max Headroom as well.

The movie proper opens with fish discussing life's meaning and a cute little animated intro featuring a fun song by Eric Idle. The Miracle of Birth is an apt way to begin a film about life and we are treated to a hilarious hospital scene of a woman about to give birth and the attendant physicians. Anyone who has actually given birth in a hospital will probably identify with the depersonalization inherent to the situation. I laughed when the husband was shooed away and the mother of the child was told to do nothing because she is not qualified. Funny, yes, and oh-so-true.

The second segment continues the birth scenario with a vignette taking place in the Third World (ha!). A Roman Catholic couple has just been blessed with yet another bundle, but, unfortunately, the father has lost his employment and will no longer be able to support the family. The musical number which follows (Every sperm is sacred) is outstanding and is perfectly juxtaposed by the Protestant couple of Graham Chapman and Eric Idle. Chapman's delivery is so spot on and Idle's facial expressions are priceless. The kicker for me is the punchline after the scene which leads into segment 3: Growth and Learning.

John Cleese's performance as headmaster is equally brilliant and I have to admit I get a big kick out of the sex education class. I would like to be a fly on the wall for that one. It segues nicely into a rough-and-tumble rugby scene which is followed by an equally-violent wartime scenario (Segment 4). This sketch is quite amusingly played by the cast. Turn up the volume a bit to hear all that they are saying. Next, Michael Palin gives a quirky turn as a drill sergeant and then they are off to South Africa for a skirmish with the Zulus. (Psst, there really are no tigers in Africa.)

Terry Gilliam announces the middle of the film and we are swept away to a surreal scenario incorporating the fish again and other creatures of the night. Next, follows the middle years (#5) featuring a minor discourse on existential philosophy which transitions into scene 6: Live Organ Transplant. This scene is a bit gory, but leads to a fun song/fantasy animation segment starring showman Eric Idle.

Scene 7: The Autumn Years is next, showcasing our Wall Street group from the opening segment. Their discussion is quite metaphysical and most illuminating. Next, we are taken to the French restaurant with Mr. Creosote. This is my least favorite section of the movie, but I do appreciate it as a lead-in to Gaston's philosophy of life.

The Final Segment 8: Death opens with a cute little animated sequence and goes on to a scene with gratuitous nudity. Somehow it avoids being overly offensive, but if I were younger I would probably have a problem with it. The dinner sequence with the grim reaper follows and further shows the versatility of the principals. The closing segment in Heaven links the film nicely and has another fine musical number starring Chapman called "Christmas in Heaven." This blue-toned sequence smacks of Gilliam's "Brazil" and is a fun way to end the picture. Of course, Michael Palin sums things up nicely afterward, but this is more as an afterthought than anything else.

All in all, if you can keep an open mind and are not easily offended, Python's "Meaning of Life" is highly worth viewing and a special musical treat. Check it out today!

1 out of 5 stars Someone please take it out of my hands!.......2007-06-05

I grew up watching "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," so when I saw this VHS for sale at the low cost of $1 I thought I was in for a treat. Unfortunately it was awful. I know their reputation is built on pushing the limits and nothing is too sacred, but this was disgusting and stupid. I have to be honest in admitting there were a couple of funny parts (when the Yorkshire father says he will sell his children for scientific experiments) but it was not worth the $1 I paid for it and I want it out of my house before my kids find it!

4 out of 5 stars Typical Monty Python Hilarious Satire.......2007-05-23

The revolt of the accountants is one of their funniest skits.

This disappointment from Jim Jarmusch stars Johnny Depp in a mystery-Western about a 19th-century accountant named William Blake, who spends nearly all his money getting to a hellish mud town in the old West and ends up penniless and doomstruck in the wilderness. A benevolent if goofy Native American (Gary Farmer) takes an interest in guiding Blake on a quest for identity in his earthly journey, but the film is really just a string of endless shtick about inbred woodsmen, dumb lawmen, and a trio of irritable killers. With Robert Mitchum, Iggy Pop, Gabriel Byrne, Alfred Molina, and a noodling soundtrack by Neil Young. --Tom Keogh

Description

Johnny Depp (CHOCOLAT) delivers a remarkable performance in this highly acclaimed tale of adventure and intrigue in the wild, wild west! A young man in search of a fresh start, William Blake (Depp) embarks on an exciting journey to a new town ... never realizing the danger that lies ahead. But when a heated love triangle ends in double murder, Blake finds himself a wanted man, running scared -- until a mysterious loner teaches him to face the dangers that follow a "dead man." With an outstanding supporting cast including Gabriel Byrne (THE USUAL SUSPECTS) and Robert Mitchum (CAPE FEAR), and a sizzling soundtrack, DEAD MAN is another motion picture triumph from filmmaker Jim Jarmusch.

5 out of 5 stars indeed, apparently the Amazon reviewer was on crack.......2007-08-20

One of the best films of all time. A departure from Jarmusch's other films into a more somewhat spiritual phase that included later Ghost Dog. I never tire of watching this gorgeous, funny, sad, existential and moving film. It is one of the few DVDs I deem worth owning. Do not miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Artistic and Odd.......2007-08-16

I read a lot of the reviews before watching this movie. I am a Depp fan, so I decided to see for myself what it's all about.

It's artsy, and you have to get used to the format. The black and white cinematography, I thought, was very good. The format is more of a series of vignettes than a continuous flow of story and dialogue. You get the hang of it pretty quickly. The music isn't your normal kind of score. Sometimes it fits the scene really well, and other times it borders on being annoying. The acting is very good. Don't expect some sort of "Ocean's Thirteen" cast with witticisms and glitzy movie-making. It's not that kind of film. If you're familiar with much of Depp's work you won't be too surprised that this film is avante garde.

In terms of the story, I'd recommend relaxing and taking the journey. Each person will find something different in it, I think. The story isn't hard to follow. The choices that Depp's character makes result in the twists and turns of the story. Don't waste time trying to figure out logic - you'll figure out pretty quickly that logic isn't part of the random sorts of things that happen. Why does Depp's character do what he does? He just does. Could he do otherwise? Yes. But he doesn't. He seems swept away by his circumstances - that's part of the interest of the story. Obviously Native American spiritualism guides Farmer's character. If you have any understanding of Native American myth you'll be able to figure Farmer's character, "Nobody," out. As to whether he's "real" or imaginary, that's part of the individual interpretation involved in watching the film. That's part of what makes it artsy instead of "hollywood." Everything isn't spelled out and spoonfed to the viewer.

If you want to walk away with a resolved ending and a happy feeling don't waste your time. Likewise if you're sensitive to things that are dark and logic that is more random than systematic, you won'
