Get Real begins with a couple of hedgehogs having sex, and deals with a topic just as prickly: gay love in adolescence. Steve (Ben Silverstone) is a student at a British school where everyone wears classy uniforms, knows he's gay, and is pretty comfortable being so. John (Brad Gorton), a top athlete and all-around admired guy, is just getting an inkling and isn't sure how he feels about it. This, cleverly, is how the movie manages to explore coming-out issues and be over them at the same time. In fact, the whole movie is pretty clever--witty dialogue, deft direction, nimble pacing, and clean editing--in exploring the seriousness of adolescent life without taking it too seriously. The key is in Silverstone's performance; he's a completely convincing mixture of hesitation and recklessness, all the conflicts of high school in one sweet-faced package. As the movie follows Steve and John's relationship--their evasions at school, getting picked up by the police in a park, goofing around in a heated swimming pool, grappling with coming out to the world at large--it lays out a bit of contrast with Steve's best friend Linda (Charlotte Brittain), who's as unapologetically fat as Steve is gay, and who's having an affair with her driving instructor. Excellent performances all around, funny, sexy, charming--if only straight teen comedies were half this good. Get Real even demonstrates the proper etiquette when soliciting sex in public restrooms; what more can you ask for? --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
One of my very favorite movies.......2007-06-30
I love this movie. It's one of those magical little Brit flicks in which everything just works. It's also one of the very few films that I can watch again and again (with intervals of a few months in between) and still feel the same kind of emotional response.
No doubt much of my reaction is personal, and I suspect this movie is pretty much a gay thing. It may even be more specialized than that -- a gay thing for people who aren't American idiots, which would rule out much of the audience for teen-oriented entertainment, as evidenced by a couple of the more vapid reviews in this thread. So be warned if you are (a) straight, (b) stupid, (c) unable to tolerate non-Hollywood fare, or some ungodly combination of the above.
Another must have.......2007-06-26
What a great movie! Great acting. Humor where you wouldn't expect it. A movie that makes you think. And what a great line to almost end the movie with: "It's just love! What is everyone so afraid of?" Not only was it entertaining, but I bought it at an apropos point in my life, and it has helped me during a couple of struggles. Wonderful when a movie can be thoroughly entertaining, insightful, and personally helpful.
nice try.......2007-05-24
Almost hit the mark, deals with some serious issues, and funny in parts, but not extremly convincing. Still worth a spin, but needed some better casting.
Very very good movie.......2007-03-18
This movie is about sadness, love, lies, loneliness, rumors and abusive!! This movie got me heartache and I almost cry the whole time. If you have never seen this movie oh my my!! You should buy it and see it for yourself!!
A good coming out story.......2007-03-17
I enjoyed this movie quite a bit because it nicely depicted the complications that arise from being in the closet, ultimately coming out, and having to deal with the sad consequences of someone else's failure to be honest and truthful. Of course it's tough to be "real" when that is exactly what friends, family, and society often don't want to see, but in the long run it is just so much better than trying to live a lie and make yourself believe this is okay. In the film, I thought the writer did a nice job of showing how some people who appear to have everything actually end up with very little of true value while the "outcasts" often shine with true grit and integrity. Overall, this is a feel-good movie with a mostly good ending. The characters are great. You'll like it!

Cedric the Entertainer transforms Jackie Gleason's classic blue-collar sitcom The Honeymooners into an urban comedy. New York City bus driver Ralph Kramden (Cedric, Barbershop) lives in volatile bliss with his wife Alice (Gabrielle Union, Bring It On). His best friend Ed Norton (Mike Epps, Next Friday) and his wife Trixie (Regina Hall, Scary Movie) live upstairs in a cramped, dingy apartment building. Ralph and Ed get into constant trouble due to their brainless get-rich-quick schemes, including buying a Pullman train car and trying to race an abandoned greyhound--schemes which only serve to lose the money they need to buy a charming duplex on a tree-lined street. Unfortunately, there's a sleazy real-estate agent (Eric Stoltz, Pulp Fiction) who's wooing the little old lady who owns the property, so it's a race to see if Ralph and Ed can raise the money before the bill of sale gets signed. It's a shame that so many cliches had to die so that their hollow, lifeless corpses could be put on display in this formulaic excuse for a movie. Also featuring John Leguizamo (Moulin Rouge), who rattles off a string of one-liners that almost become funny through sheer velocity. --Bret Fetzer
Product Description
Working class New York bus driver Ralph Kramden (Cedric the Entertainer) is a man with big dreams that never work out. His friend, sewer specialist Ed Norton (Mike Epps) is always around to help him get in (and out of) trouble. Standing by their husbands are devoted wives Alice (Gabrielle Union) and Trixie (Regina Hall) who make ends meet by waitressing at a neighborhood diner. Throw in a stray dog named Iggy who runs like the wind (when he's motivated) and you have a comical underdog story for the whole family.
Customer Reviews:
great remake!.......2007-08-13
Loved this remake of the old favorite Honeymooners sitcom. Always adored that sitcom. My husband and I would watch the reruns every New Years Day during marathons. It improved our marriage because we got to see the funny side of married life and a show where the couple was working class, poor and struggling just like us but, despite all that, they loved each other. The remake added another commonality by showing Ralph & Alice and Norton & Trixy as Black Americans. It kept to the show's intent of being humorous and that in a working-class marriage, love can survive. In this movie, finally, the Honeymooners show ends on a happy financial victory. Well somewhat victorious. As is typical, Ralph messes up with something. Don't we all.
Pleasant - Not as bad as Prior Reviews Suggest.......2007-08-11
First the disclaimer - I grew up in NYC with at at time when the original Honeymooners series was on WPIX just about every night at 11:00 pm. As such, I've seen every episode and have always loved the show. I had heard all the terrible things about this film and was prepared for a train wreck of a movie. Surprise - there is no train wreck here! (Although there is a buried Pullman car).
This is the first movie I've seen Cedric the Entertainer in, and I can't imagine a better choice. Chris Farley might have been able to pull it off if he were alive. And Kevin James is already playing "Ralph Kramden" on the King of Queens (think about it - that show is basically an updated Honeymooners, except "Ralph" drives a UPS truck instead of a bus, and has an obnoxious father-in-law instead of mother-in-law.) I was less thrilled with the Alice and Trixie roles here, but Cedric was perfect and Mike Epps carried off an acceptable Ed Norton. No, it's not the TV series, but it's far from the worst updating of a TV show into a movie you'll find.
Having read prior reviews here, I've been a little dismayed to see all of the negativity over the fact that this was cast with black actors and actresses. So what? There is nothing inherent in these characters to prevent this story being told with either a white or black cast. Working class blue collar NYC employees come in various shades and races, and a black NYC bus driver - a black Ralph Kramden - doesn't exactly stretch the boundaries of imagination or credibility here. What's more important is that they get the spirit of the characters right, and Cedric had that spirit, Epps had enough of it, and Alice and Trixie - although they could have used a bit more - are secondary players anyway. I never viewed this as a black Honeymooners. I viewed it as an updated Honeymooners.
This isn't a great movie, but it's decent entertainment, and - contrary to a previous poster's comment - light years better than the Bewitched updated film version.
Recommended for a light, fun night of popcorn on the sofa with your sweetie.
*The Honeymooner Crossover*.......2007-04-12
I thought the movie was quite funny. It had some great actors and actresses. I think the new modern Honeymooners added alot of soul, spunk and humor. It is a great family movie.
Ralph and Ed never looked like this........2007-03-18
What I really hate this movie for is that they took the story from a classic tv show of the 1950's with an American white cast and turned it into a black cast for a motion picture in 2005.
They should have used the story from "What's Happening" or Sanford & Son" instead.
Would it be right for us to take "Thge Jeffersons" or What's Happening" and turn it into a white cast?
When television sets were a new invention (black & white only) and only the networks of CBS, NBC, ABC and Dumont exsisted, the Dumont "Cavalcade of Stars" was one of the tv shows from the beginning years of television. This show included a sketch of "The Honeymooners".
Then moving on to CBS for "The Jackie Gleason Show", The Honeymooners took shape with Jackie Gleason as "Ralph Kramden", Audrey Meadows as "Alice", Art Carney as "Ed Norton" and Joyce Randolph as "Trixie". This became a tv series in 1955 and on and off until 1971.
DVD includes audio commentary. Deleted, extended, alternate scenes. Option of English and Spanish subtitles.
I was against seeing this movie, but when I saw that Ajay Naidu was in it, I decided to give it a try.
In the cast: Cedric the Entertainer, Gabrielle Union, Regina Hall, Mike Epps, Eric Stoltz, John Leguizamo, Ajay Naidu, Carol Woods, Chuy Bravo.
They put so much light on the black actors, just so they will show up on film.
The apartment resembles noting like the tv show. They could have titled this movie anything, but the Honeymooners.
Jackie Gleason is rolling over in his grave.
A very bad idea.......2007-02-10
I have nothing against remakes in general, but this one was a total washout. I really enjoy Cedric The Entertainer and just about anything he does, but this just didn't do it for me. Some of my favorite actors are black: Samual L. Jackson, Morgan Freeman, Forrest Whitacker, Ice Cube, Danny Glover. I can go on and on, but this was not the movie for the main charcters to be black. It just didn't do the same thing as back in the 50's. What the heck were they thinking? It was lacking, like remaking all those spaghetti westerns and using Jack Black as a fill in for Clint Eastwood.

Get Real WIne DVD - 5 stars.......2006-01-04
I read the other reviewer that had some negative feedback- but I would say that the editing and the laid back feel made it very cool. This is directed by Allen Farst and he makes you feel like your right in Napa at harvest. I would recommned this to anyone- novice or expert. I did check out the website and I look forward to other dvd's in the series- which I'm sure will be as good as this one.
Average Joe Attempts to Teach Wine Making 101.......2005-12-27
I bought this DVD to support a local resident of Ohio after reading an article about it in the newspaper. It seemed like a fun twist to learn more about wine. Although I did learn some things about wine making, corking, barreling, etc., I would have learned more if Eric the host was a better interviewer. He should have let the guests talk more and not interrupt them in the middle of their sentences, especially as they are trying to explain a technique. I also think the editing needed some work. The sound was muffled at times in addition to receiving too much background noise. I also spotted the camera and cables from time to time too. If wine intimidates you, this may be a good starter but don't expect to be wowed or blown away by this documentary. It was an average video put on by an average guy. That's what you should expect when you purchase this video.
This DVD is for those in the know- or want to know more about wine.......2005-12-06
Harvest 2005 looks awesome in this DVD. Some of my favorite wineries like Markham, Benziger, Honig and Steltzner. I would recommned this dvd to anyone. You can learn/ refresh wine 101 or get into other subjects like biodynamic farming and soil diversity. They also have a nice website getrealwine.com where you can enter your cell number and they send you the top 10 wines to buy each month....very cool.
