Three Little Words (1950) was an example of Hollywood's late-'40s/early-'50s interest in the lives of famous songwriters. Fred Astaire plays vaudeville dancer Bert Kalmar, whose act with Jessie Brown (Vera-Ellen) runs aground due to his interest in magic acts and a backstage accident. While in rehab, he meets composer Harry Ruby (Red Skelton), and the two discover a knack for writing Tin Pan Alley songs, then Broadway shows, together. There's some mild conflict in their lives as portrayed in film, but mostly the movie is an excuse to pull out a slew of Kalmar & Ruby songs such as "Who's Sorry Now," "My Sunny Tennessee," "Nevertheless," "I Wanna Be Loved by You," and the title tune. Vera-Ellen is an excellent partner for Astaire, and the relatively restrained Skelton puts in a good performance. Also appearing are Arlene Dahl as a musical actress, Gloria De Haven as her own mother, a young Debbie Reynolds as Boop-a-Doop girl Helen Kane, and the real Harry Ruby as a baseball player playing catch with Skelton, the movie Harry Ruby. Three Little Words isn't one of the great MGM musicals of its era, but it's an entertaining picture, especially for fans of Astaire. --David HoriuchiDescription

One Little Indian

Filmed on location in Utah, One Little Indian is a leisurely paced Western adventure for children and families. This sets it apart from many of those that preceded it in the '70s--and appear to have served as influences--like Little Big Man (1970) and Jeremiah Johnson (1972). There is less violence and, as in many Disney productions, animal sidekicks are a big part of the action; in this case, an ornery camel named Rosie and her calf, Thirsty. James Garner plays Keyes, a deserter from the U.S. Cavalry, who "borrows" the camels while making his escape. Shortly afterwards, he meets Mark (Clay O'Brien), a white boy raised by Indians upon the death of his parents. He too slipped away from the cavalry after they rounded up his adopted family for relocation. He joins Keyes for a trip to Mexico. Along the way, they encounter widow Doris McIver (Vera Miles) and daughter Martha (Jodie Foster). All the while, the cavalry is hot on their trail. Bernard McEveety directed episodes of a number of TV Westerns from the '50s through the '70s. These included Gunsmoke, which featured appearances by Miles (a favorite of John Ford) and Foster. He would later direct Garner in his best-known series, The Rockford Files, the following year. --Kathleen C. FennessyDescription
Clint Keys (James Garner) is a hunted man. On the run from the Cavalry, where he faces a hangman's noose for mutiny and desertion charges, he makes a frantic attempt to fade into the vast desert countryside. His conspicuous companions? "Rosie," an ill-tempered camel, her offspring, and a 10-year-old runaway boy (Clay O'Brien). Additional complications arise when they encounter a pioneering widow (Vera Miles) and her young daughter (Jodie Foster) who must choose between aiding the unlikely fugitives -- or hampering their desperate flight.Customer Reviews:

My childhood favorite.......2003-11-29
Wonderful movie - but dubbed..........2003-10-22
Gino Cervi, the mayor Peppone is also great, his physique is stiffer, bulkier, his face is also stiffer - a perfect communist-mechanic, earnest and passionate but slow, Don Camillo's opponent, on the surface thoroughly different but inside very much like him. An explosive pair, that also gets things done in the little town by the river Po, where summers are so hot, that people's brains get heated up from time to time, as Guareschi often says in his books, which are the basis for these movies. There are at least five of them altogether, though Amazon now has only one. In one of them Don Camillo disguises himself as a communist and travels to Soviet Union with Peppone's group. Books can be found on Zshops, get some and have fun.
Movies are based on Guareschi's short stories, so they usually don't have a very consistent story (except the one, where they travel to Soviet Union), but they are very well put together, with a clever narration leading the story. And the action is delicious: from little things action builds up and suddenly the whole town is on the move, everyone fighting everyone and Don Camillo and Peppone in the middle leading their troups and in the quiet moments continuing the argument by themselves. This is the priest, who sounds his church bells, when communists are having speeches on the town square, and who asks Jesus for a permission to hit the communist mayor, who is kneeling down to a prayer in front of him. And when Jesus reminds, that his hands are meant for blessing, he realizes: "But my feet aren't!" And with His permission he kicks. And this is the mayor, who wants his baby baptized as Lenin and in the dark of the night attacks the priest and paints his behind red... (read the books!)
I also love the black and white pictures in these movies, they are so 50's and very Italian. And though Orson Welles is wonderful, I almost dropped my stars from five to three. I missed the original narrator's and the actors' voices and the fluent, energetic, passionate, fast Italian, that really creates the feeling of these movies. But I couldn't do it to Fernandel and Cervi, four stars is bad enough. But I'm hoping that Amazon gets more Don Camillo movies - with subtitles! Maybe some day they are finally relesed on DVD's...
