British horror/comedy Shaun of the Dead is a scream in all senses of the word. Brain-hungry zombies shamble through the streets of London, but all unambitious electronics salesman Shaun (Simon Pegg) cares about is his girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield), who just dumped him. With the help of his slacker roommate Ed (Nick Frost), Shaun fights his way across town to rescue Liz, but the petty concerns of life keep getting in the way: When they're trying to use vinyl records to decapitate a pair of zombies, Shaun and Ed bicker about which bands deserve preservation--New Order they keep, but Sade becomes a lethal frisbee. Many zombie movies are comedies by accident, but Shaun of the Dead is deliberately and brilliantly funny, while still delivering a few delicious jolts of fear. Also featuring the stealthy comic presence of Bill Nighy (Love Actually) and some familar faces from The Office. --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars What an incredible let down........2007-09-16

Wow! I was excited to see this movie based on the trailers I had seen, what an incredible let down. Not so much a comedy, I kept waiting to laugh and never did. Live and learn. It's just a movie but I wouldn't waste my money on this stinker.

5 out of 5 stars After you stop laughing--watch it a second time.......2007-09-11

First go around, I had to clean my glasses because they were fogged with tears from laughing so hard. "Shaun" is truly one of the most bizarrely funny cult films I have ever seen.

Since I had some trouble with my Mac scanning the DVD, I watched for a second time. What jumped out at me was Shaun's manager's pep-talk about 'teams' and what a study of human nature Shaun and his group would make. We saw thinking outside of the box, bravery in the least expected places, selflessness, and how utterly stupid the panicked group Critic could be.

Seriously, if the corporate trainers ever get tired of making their teams climb rock walls and build paper gizmos that nobody will ever use, they ought to have employees watch this film--twice--so they can see human nature in action.

Wouldn't dealing with zombies be a great way to explain difficult tech support calls? How many uses can you find for this scenario?

"Shaun" is a great film on both the funny and the serious levels. And it is one to be watched more than once. I seriously regret not seeing it in the theatre.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, funny film.......2007-09-01

I have watched this film several times and now and just love the humour. It is a horror film though so not for the faint hearted
Lets all go to the 'Winchester'....:-)

2 out of 5 stars surely not hilarious..........2007-08-23

it could have been much more better. the scénario is very poor and acting is pretty bad.About laughing....search where and when..
as poor as Hot fuzz
rent it at the best.

1 out of 5 stars WASTE OF TIME........2007-08-18

I love British humor but this sucked. I cannot understand why people loved it so much...Let's face it, if these actors had American accents it would be a complete flop...Also, I believe a lot of people are saying they like it to fit in.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-09-15

I loved Shaun of the Dead when I saw it on DVD. When I got a HD-DVD player, I found out this movie was on HD-DVD and I had to have it! It was better watching it this time around than when I first remember. If you don't own the movie already, you need to get it, if you do own it, watch it again or buy the HD-DVD version if you want to support the format and/or Simon, Nick, and Bill.

5 out of 5 stars Zombie Plagues are Tons of Fun!.......2007-08-26

I loved this movie: a little bit of gore, a little bit of heartbreak...they do their best to survive.

"Shaun of the Dead" brings good humour to this "romantic comedy with zombies" which comes to HD DVD with a fantastic HD picture and excellent DD+ 5.1 audio.

The local zombies are great...I liked the female Winchester regular, she made a nice creepy zombie, as did the [chubby] black one, and Mary grows on you even more through the second viewing...they all did a really great job! They do well to give several zombies more familiarity through character development.

There are plenty of extras on this HD DVD as well including deleted scenes, commentary, a gallery...it even follows up on a couple of happenings not shown in the film.

This is an extremely fun movie, and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic.......2007-08-21

Loved this movie. Saw Hot Fuzz first, which was also great. This movie is a great comedy. Other reviews go through the plot, so I won't bother. Great movie in the tradition of British comedies with smart, sharp writing and great acting.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy of the price a funny movie.......2007-08-13

One of my favorite movies is Shaun of the Dead. That being said I expected more of the same with this movie. After watching the movie it wasn't the same. The physical comedy I enjoyed so much is not evident early on. The comedy and banter is dry early on. The action is rather lacking for the first hour. Then when the movie heats up it really becomes a lot of fun.

This movie is different and for those expecting an American type action movie you better turn away. Hot Fuzz features a lot and I mean a lot of dry English humor. It's good but don't expect any real laugh til your sides hurt moments. Hot Fuzz is rather enjoyable if you approach it with an open mind. The same main characters for Shaun of the Dead are here and the on screen chemistry is good. This movie is almost unusual to be stranger than Shaun of the Dead.

In the end I really liked this movie. The acting is very good and action scenes are funny and intense. The sound quality on my home theatre was very good and that helped add to the movie. For any fan of Shaun of the Dead this is definately a must watch. The picture and sound quality are excellent for this HD version. The price is great. At only $20 this is a must have for any HD collection.

4 out of 5 stars Not your typical zombie movie (HD DVD review).......2007-08-06

If you are looking for your typical zombie movie ie. 28 days/weeks later, land of the dead, dawn of the dead this is not it. If you do not enjoy british humor go somewhere else. However if you are okay with the above stated then this movie is for you. very funny film, well made.
HD DVD version is excellent very good sound and video.

Screenwriters rarely develop a distinctive voice that can be recognized from movie to movie, but the ornate imagination of Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) has made him a unique and much-needed cinematic presence. In Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a guy decides to have the memories of his ex-girlfriend erased after she's had him erased from her own memory--but midway through the procedure, he changes his mind and struggles to hang on to their experiences together. In other hands, the premise of memory-erasing would become a trashy science-fiction thriller; Kaufman, along with director Michel Gondry, spins this idea into a funny, sad, structurally complex, and simply enthralling love story that juggles morality, identity, and heartbreak with confident skill. The entire cast--Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Wilkinson, and more--give superb performances, carefully pitched so that cleverness never trumps feeling. A great movie. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars A Movie You Won't Forget.......2007-09-05

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is another fabulous movie from writer Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation (Superbit Collection), Human Nature). Joel Barish wants to forget his former girlfriend so he goes to a company and gets his memory erased.

This movie is wonderful and really makes you think. I recommend that everybody should see this movie.

The DVD, which is an upgrade from the single disc features a few more things. Not only do you get the same features from the first disc (which very well may be that first disc) you get a second disc full of other features.

There's a second interview with Kate Winslet and Michel Gondry (the first contained Jim Carrey and the director). A feature for Michel Gondry himself and more deleted scenes from the movie. There's even a commemorative photo book.

This DVD is highly recommended. The movie's one of the best of the year.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Movie.......2007-08-22

This movie explores the mysteries of memory and love- it's a lot of fun and leaves you with a lot to think about.

4 out of 5 stars To Know or Not To Know, That Is The Question..........2007-08-11

This movie turned out to be a half-full, half-empty glass of water. I saw it half-full. My wife saw it half-empty. For once, she was the pessimist. (Write this date down!)

To me it raised the interesting question of, if you know ahead of time how disappointing something is going to turn out, is it still worth going through anyway? Few things meet our expectations; the concept always outshines the actuality. But when you fall in love everything seems like it's going to be peachy for the rest of eternity. Disappointment almost always looms. It's how you deal with it that counts.

Because even in the best relationship, you're going to get bored with each other. You're going to start to find small niggling faults becoming reasons for a major fallout. Most breakups aren't over big, dramatic actions ("You slept with my sister while you said you were on a business trip in Seattle!") but rather small things that start to irritate you about the other person--the weird color they dye their hair, or how they say "liberry" instead of "library."

This is what happens to both Jim Carey and Kate Winslet in this movie. And both of them, to forget each other, have their memories of the other person flushed out. But to paraphrase Tennyson, is it better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all? That's the difficult question the movie grapples with, and the astonishing thing about it is that you never feel like it's "grappling" with it at all. Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman knows how to deal with some uncommon themes (particularly in Hollywood, where any film in which the female lead doesn't take her top off or get hung upside-down on a meat hook is considered practically an art film these days) very naturally. Carey gradually discovers that even bad feelings have their upside, their purpose, because without them the good have no context. They're inseparable, and when the "bad" ones have to go so must the good. Too late he realizes this is not what he wants. Then a series of complications almost too twisted to chart ensue. Kaufman must have had a roadmap tacked to his wall to keep it all straight. The astonishing thing--and the tribute to his screenwriting prowess--is that we the viewers can keep them straight too. Despite a story that's almost impossible to re-tell, Eternal Sunshine is actually a very easy movie to watch, never confusing, never too fast or too slow. This is no small achievement.

So that's my take on things. My wife's view is that the film was trying to say that no matter how many chances you get, you still make the same stupid mistakes. She cites as evidence the moment in the doctor's office where the receptionist tells a patient she can't have the procedure three times in one month. She cites as evidence the fact that although a key character (not Winslet) has her memory wiped clean, she turns around and does the same foolish thing with another person when the same opportunity presents itself. All true, but I think that's more of a subplot than *the* plot. The minor characters may fumble about, but our heroes Kate and Jim will learn something in the end from their stumbles, and they do, at an empty beach house, that has to be one of the saddest, most underwritten (in a good way), farewell scene I've watched in years (decades?). Kaufman and the producers trusted their audience. They didn't feel they needed to get out the pile driver. It's beautiful writing. I wish there were more intelligence like this in Hollywood these days.

As some others have noted, this is first and foremost a director and writer's picture. It's not the acting that carries things along. Still, the right casting is important, for we really have to relate to these characters quickly, since we don't get a lot of exposition before things go nonlinear. In Jim Carney we have the perfect "everyman." I never care for Carey when he's manic or crazy, but beneath the "over-the-top" persona there beats the warm heart of a genuine artist. Brit Kate Winslet astonishes at how effortlessly she plays a very American, very ordinary character--every semi-big town is full of "individualists" like Clementine, with her ever-changing hair, Doc Marten boots, and terminal retail career outlook. ("I'm just a f---ed up girl looking for her own piece of mind!") Both characters have the tough and thankless job of appearing unremarkable while making us care about them very much. Kirsten Dunst plays the Cameron Diaz role--a nice but ditzy blonde who spends a lot of time dancing around in her underwear. Elijah Wood and Mark Ruffalo look like they should have the Verizon wireless Network behind them. (How the sophisticated job of memory erasure is done with a couple of laptops and some simple software is hilarious.) And Tom Wilkinson is effortless, as usual, in the supporting role of the doctor who runs the clinic that vacuums minds the way those cheap professional maid services vacuum carpets. (You never quite trust them in your house. Are they going to break your porcelain knick-knacks? Raid your fridge and drink your beer?)

But mostly it's the ideas--and the way they're executed--that makes Eternal Sunshine so memorable. Extras include lots of interviews with Carey and director Michel Gondry, Winslet and Gondry (where things start out a little testy, and no, I don't think they were kidding), a making-of featurette that includes the scoop on how they did the remarkable special effects (not how you'd think in this digital day and age), and lots of other goodies we've come to expect from hit movies. Transfer to DVD is excellent. This is one of the more intelligent films to come out in recent years. Here's looking forward to the next Charlie Kaufman project.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD.......2007-08-09

This dvd was delivered in perfect condition and was exactly what i ordered. My only issue was the delivery time. it took a lot longer then excpected to be delivered. but its the right product, so i can't complain that much.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite films of all time.......2007-07-07

I like to consider myself a big movie buff. One of my personal favorite films from this decade is "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". I am not a Jim Carrey but the premise of the film still intrigued me.

Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet plays a dysfunctional couple named Joel and Clementine. The couple are polar opposites from one another. Joel is more quiet and reserved while Clementine is more gregarious and unpredictable. These personality differences makes their relationship far from dull. After having a huge blow out with Joel, Clementine decides to have her memories of Joel erased courtesy of Howard (Tom Wilkinson) and his assistants played by Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Woods. When Joel finds out about what Clementine did, he decides to get the same procedure done on him. During the process of having his memories of Clementine erased (which is basically a lobotomy), Joel relizes that he still loves Clementine and does not want to forget her.

I loved this film right from the first time I saw this film in the theatre but I really didn't get it until I viewed it a few more times on dvd. The way the film is edited is a bit confusing but the more I have watched it, the more the film makes sense. What I saw was a history of Joel and Clementine's rocky relationship. The performances was great. It was nice to see Jim Carrey actually tone down his comedic schtick and Kate Winslet take on a more comedic role. The writing and directingis just as good. Too bad most films in the past two years haven't come close to the uniqueness of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind".

Lane Myer (John Cusack) is stuck in a personal hell. A compulsive, adolescent Everyman growing up in Suburbia, USA, not only does he fail to make the prestigious high school ski team (again), but his beloved sweetheart, Beth, also leaves him for Roy, the team's popular, arrogant captain. If this isn't bad enough, he's stuck with a mother who frighteningly experiments--rather than cooks--with food, a brother who builds rockets out of models, and a best friend so desperate for drugs that he settles for snorting powdered snow. Faced with these prospects, Lane opts to end it all ... until he comes up with a ridiculous plan to gain acceptance and win Beth back. Director Savage Steve Holland warps this simple, clichéd premise, letting his wacky imagination twist it into a fairly original, slightly dark, and completely hilarious '80s teen comedy. Not as serious a "suicide-attempt" movie as, say, Harold and Maude but just as funny, the film's more a collection of screwball sketches than a narrative. Holland livens the high jinks with surrealistic fantasy touches, including Jell-O that crawls, a hamburger that sings Van Halen, drawings that mock its creator, Japanese race-car drivers who only speak Howard Cosell, and a psychotic paperboy seeking blood over a missing $2. Cusack puts the whole thing on his shoulders and carries the insanity with another one of his touching, obsessively romantic performances, which, along with Say Anything, The Sure Thing, and One Crazy Summer, made him the quintessential (and appealing) personification of lovestruck adolescence and suffering. --Dave McCoy

This movie is one of my all-time favorites. I am so glad that I own it now!

5 out of 5 stars Pure 80's laughter.......2007-07-23

With this movie who has a mother that cooks food that always seems to walk off your plate? A funny but short movie with John Cusack in it as the main character. Wanting to beat the popular kid on the mountain slope he goes off to try and win the heart of a girl without killing himself skiing down the mountain. Some good music in this movie, and the best scenes are when his mother tries to cook the food and when she serves it, it seems to walk off their plates. Very 80's and it's a very young John Cusack.

5 out of 5 stars 80's Cult Classic.......2007-07-06

Love this movie. Definetly an 80's Favorite and totally underestimated! The young John Cusack is such a hottie!!

4 out of 5 stars One for your collection.......2007-06-10

If you are looking for a corky, funny movie this is it. One of my all time favorites.

5 out of 5 stars This flick is genius! TWO DOLLARS!.......2007-05-29

Who else loves this film? Apparently, John Cusack doesn't. Oh well!

The film is about a teenager, Lane Meyer, who is ridiculously obsessed with his girlfriend. After breaking up with her, he tries suicide. Of course, the attempts backfire on him. Meanwhile, she's with a new guy, Roy, captain of the ski team, and he's trying to avoid a paperboy who will try anything to acquire his two dollars, and unbearable events at his house with his off the wall family members. Fortunately, Lane's neighbors have taken in a French exchange student, Monique Junot, who seems to have a crush on Lane. Meanwhile, Lane has to defeat Roy in order to get his girlfriend's respect...

"Better Off Dead..." is DEFINITELY one of the greatest teen comedies ever conceived. It's truly an original, off the wall, hilarious film. Cusack will always be Lane Meyer to me.

Four extremely beautiful people do extremely horrible things to one another in Closer, Mike Nichols' pungent adaptation of Patrick Marber's play that easily marks the Oscar-winning director's best work in years. Anna (Julia Roberts) is a photographer who specializes in portraits of strangers; Dan (Jude Law) is an obituary writer struggling to become a novelist; Alice (Natalie Portman) is an American stripper freshly arrived in London after a bad relationship; and Larry (Clive Owen) is a dermatologist who finds love under the most unlikely of circumstances. When their paths cross it's a dizzying supernova of emotions, as Nichols and Marber adroitly construct various scenes out of their lives that pair them again and again in various permutations of passion, heartbreak, anger, sadness, vengeance, pleading, deception, and most importantly, brutal honesty. It's only until you're more than halfway through the movie that you'll have to ask yourself exactly why you are watching such a beautifully tragic tale, as Closer is basically the ickiest, grossest, most dysfunctional parts of all your past relationships strung together into one movie. Ultimately, it falls to the four actors to draw you deeper into the story; all succeed relatively, but it's Law and Owen whose characters will cut you to the quick. Law proves that yet again he's most adept at playing charming, amoral bastards with manipulative streaks, and Owen is nothing short of brilliant as the character most turned on by the energy inherent in destructive relationships--whether he's on the giving or receiving end. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars Great character study! Which one are you?.......2007-09-07

This movie is RAW. If you want a feel good and bubble gum and lollipops type of movie, this is not for you.

This is one of the BEST character studies I have seen in a long time. It's ugly, it's raw, but it's REAL and that could be why some felt so ill at ease. To like this movie is to accept that people really are this selfish and ugly-hearted. This could very well happen and that's what turns your stomach.

By far, Clive Owen owns this movie! You are disgusted by him from beginning to end, but find yourself rooting for him on several occasions, then mad at yourself that you are doing so. But then when you look at the alternative for Anna (Julia Roberts) in Dan (Jude Law), you allow yourself the moral misstep. Dan is quietly selfish and insecure. You realize early on there's an invisible bar that he's set that no one can meet or sustain.

At the end of this movie, you'll ask yourself (in regards to family, friends, and intimate relationships) are you the one setting the unrealistic bar, or are you the one trying to meet one? Are you being yourself while also allowing others to be who they are.

"Alice" was played BRILLIANTLY by Natalie Portman. She had the right balance or tough chick and little-girl-lost. You clearly understood she was someone who wanted to be loved and accepted "as is" flawed and all. Doesn't everyone? She was the only innocent one, so to speak, in the entire quadrangle. She gave her body at the end masking her rejection and hurt. We all know someone whose done this or continues to do this. Although clearly misguided, Alice is the only one who didn't maliciously or selfishly hurt someone she claimed to love.

What makes Larry so remarkable is that he understood they were all flawed INCLUDING HIMSELF, but unlike Dan, accepted it. He knew Anna was a depressive. She didn't have to stay "up" and perfect for him. Larry allowed her to have her blue funks because he knew exactly what made her function comfortably. He was quite content in lifting and supporting her in her art of "photographing sad people beautifully" as Alice said, hitting the Anna nail right on the head. Anna was beautiful to the world, but was sad upon closer inspection. Dan never even realized her condition because it was all about him. Larry understood 'you are what you are,' anything better than that was a great moment. Because he understood this, he knew how to manipulate and orchestrate them all into ultimately getting what he wanted. Dan never got "it" in regard to his relationships because again, it was about him and distracting from his own securities. He had lived and supposedly loved Anna, but didn't really know her - same for "Alice." Any revelations as to who they really were, came from outside sources.

Alice told Larry hidden truths about herself because he was totally open with her - nothing hidden which in turn made her comfortable enough to talk.

Julia gave a great understated performance. She wasn't overly emotional, she didn't rely on her sexuality, she simply existed from moment-to-moment as a depressive does.

I challenge anyone who hated the ugliness of this movie to rewatch it with new eyes.

GREAT-GREAT film!

3 out of 5 stars MAKES YOU WANT TO JOIN A MONESTERY.......2007-08-25

Wow, what an exhausting movie about some really f**ked up people. Just when you started to root for a character they would do something so base and digusting you would just sit there in shock. The dialoge is great, thanks to this being an acclaimed stage production, the performances are good, Clive Owen the stand out, he was exceptional. Im really not sure id recommend this movie, it's so depressing, and what it says about these four losers is not pretty, but on the other hand the performances are good, the dialoge well written and i liked the fact is is shot on location in London...really up to you, but be prepared to be very frustated, these four are idiots of the highest order and deserve each other, I really hate to think that anyone could be as horrible as any of these four.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Drama.......2007-08-18

It has its flaws of course: the dialogue is exagerrated and serendipity plays an all too prominent role. But this is one of my all time favorite films. The beauty of this film comes from embracing everything it has to offer such as witty euphemisms (of the few it has). But be warned: it is very cut throat and bellicose in its depiction of surreal contemporary relationships. Its not putting on a mask and calling people out on their innocence. In this film, no one is spared the sledge-hammer.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst movie ever.......2007-08-11

This was the most degraded garbage I ever tried to watch I got halfway through and was so disgusted I shreded the disc .
The constant swearing and vulgarity were totaly uncalled for.

4 out of 5 stars Clive looking good.......2007-06-27

A really good pick if you want a slew of good actors and especially Clive Owen. Interesting, kept me from falling asleep, a problem I have now that I have a yound child at home, ha! had some nice dreams after this too, what a plus.

Transplanted from England to the not-so-mean streets of Chicago, the screen adaptation of Nick Hornby's cult-classic novel High Fidelity emerges unscathed from its Americanization, idiosyncrasies intact, thanks to John Cusack's inimitable charm and a nimble, nifty screenplay (cowritten by Cusack). Early-thirtysomething Rob Gordon (Cusack) is a slacker who owns a vintage record shop, a massive collection of LPs, and innumerable top-five lists in his head. At the opening of the film, Rob recounts directly to the audience his all-time top-five breakups--which doesn't include his recent falling out with his girlfriend Laura (Iben Hjejle), who has just moved out of their apartment. Thunderstruck and obsessed with Laura's desertion (but loath to admit it), Rob begins a quest to confront the women who instigated the aforementioned top-five breakups to find out just what he did wrong.

Low on plot and high on self-discovery, High Fidelity takes a good 30 minutes or so to find its groove (not unlike Cusack's Grosse Pointe Blank), but once it does, it settles into it comfortably and builds a surprisingly touching momentum. Rob is basically a grown-up version of Cusack's character in Say Anything (who was told "Don't be a guy--be a man!"), and if you like Cusack's brand of smart-alecky romanticism, you'll automatically be won over (if you can handle Cusack's almost-nonstop talking to the camera). Still, it's hard not to be moved by Rob's plight. At the beginning of the film he and his coworkers at the record store (played hilariously by Jack Black and Todd Louiso) seem like overgrown boys in their secret clubhouse; by the end, they've grown up considerably, with a clear-eyed view of life. Ably directed by Stephen Frears (Dangerous Liaisons), High Fidelity features a notable supporting cast of the women in Rob's life, including the striking, Danish-born Hjejle, Lisa Bonet as a sultry singer-songwriter, and the triumphant triumvirate of Lili Taylor, Joelle Carter, and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Rob's ex-girlfriends. With brief cameos by Tim Robbins as Laura's new, New Age boyfriend and Bruce Springsteen as himself. --Mark Englehart

Description

From the guys who brought you GROSSE POINTE BLANK comes the absolutely hilarious HIGH FIDELITY. John Cusack (BEING JOHN MALKOVICH) stars as Rob Gordon, the owner of a semi-failing record store located on one of the back streets of Chicago. He sells music the old-fashioned way -- on vinyl, with two wacky clerks, the hysterically funny rock snob Barry (Jack Black) and the more quietly opinionated underachiever Dick (Todd Luiso). But Rob's business isn't the only thing in his life that's floundering -- his needle skips the love groove when his longtime girlfriend Laura (newcomer Iben Hjejle) walks out on him. And this forces him to examine his past failed attempts at romance the only way he knows how! For a rocking fun time, give HIGH FIDELITY a spin. It's sure to make your all-time top five list for comedies -- with a bullet.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars High Fidelity.......2007-07-19

Frears's surprisingly insightful film, adapted from the Nick Hornby novel, examines the comic romantic entanglements of a lovable music-store geek. His record stacks and Top Five lists may be in perfect order, but his love life is a shambles, and Cusack plays the part with shaggy-dog affection. Aside from solid direction and a great soundtrack, the other selling point here is the supporting cast, in particular Jack Black as a crass, super-snobby record nerd and Robbins as a New Age devotee. High Fidelity hits a steady, heartfelt groove that will keep you in stitches.

5 out of 5 stars "High Fidelity" - still great after all of these years.......2007-06-09

Whether you're a John Cusack fan or not, "High Fidelity" is a great movie featuring the humorous antics of a younger (funnier?) Jack Black and a nice light romatic buzz. An excellent date movie for two people of out-of-the-ordinary tastes in music (great soundtrack).

5 out of 5 stars Learn from the Anti Hero........2007-02-28

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It's possible to learn from others to avoid those same mistakes yourself. I see that in this enjoyable movie. As with anything really good it seems to be more than the sum of its parts. You can pick apart individual performances and scrutinize every detail, or you can appreciate the overall message and theme. The overall sticks with me longer and keeps me coming back.

5 out of 5 stars A John Cusack classic........2007-01-05

John Cusack is my favorite actor, so it may sound like this is subject to bias. However, it's easy to judge a movie by its talent, especially when an actors fills a role as perfectly as Cusack does here. He plays the fool he always seems to play in this cult classic movie. Set to a great soundtrack, Cusack owns a record store and frequently makes "Top 5" lists, of all varieties. The movie as a whole is a documentation of a critical Top 5 list in his life--Top 5 relationship breakups. The simple man owning his small fry record store relates his 5 worst breakups throughout life, dating as early as his middle school childhood.

Ultimately, this is a sappy romantic comedy, as he retells the good and the bad from all his relationship woes, and ultimately searches for meaning and growth in his personal life, as his breakups and/or dumpings relate to it.

Classic Cusack here, so if you like the actor, you'll love the movie.

3 out of 5 stars Perfect Comedy.......2006-11-19

High Fidelity is a comedy about Rob Gordan (John Cusack), a record store owner/operator who has recently split with his girlfriend Laura (Iben Hjejle) and now is trying to get it all together. The movie opens with her leaving and Rob giving us his top five list of the most painful breakups. At work, his two "employees" Dick (Todd Louiso) and Barry (Jack Black) share his passion for music and to tell people that what to listen to. The top five motif is present throughout the entire movie, giving it a unique take on life. Rob cheated on Laura, borrowed money from Laura and hasn't given it back to her, and caused Laura to have an abortion. He pretty much feels like a jerk, but it all goes away when he finds out that she is living with Ian Raymond (Tim Robbins), his former neighbor known as "Ray".

When Rob realizes that he is miserable from thinking about his breakups from past years, he has an epiphany. If he just confronts each one individually, the pain will go away. To just see that they have moved on so he can move on as well, but the anguish over Laura resonates due to the fact that she keeps coming over to get her stuff. Now Rob must figure out if he should just move or try to make amends with Laura and get back together.

Cusack is fantastic as the funny, sometimes self loathing music enthusiast. He narrates just about the entire movie and some of the dialogue he gives us is priceless. Black and Louiso seem to be on opposite ends of the rock and roll spectrum but they come together to appreciate the art of making music even with their sometimes totally different styles. Black is very energetic as the self-proclaimed 'know it all' of rock music and Louiso is the calm, quiet rocker. Even Hjejle and Cusack's sister Joan give great performances. All together the cast did incredibly well.

High Fidelity is a perfect movie to just pop in one night and enjoy

Kate Hudson twinkles as the heroine of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, a magazine writer assigned to date a guy, make all the mistakes girls make that drive guys away (being clingy, talking in baby-talk, etc.), and record the process like a sociological experiment. However, the guy she picks--rangy Matthew McConaughey--is an advertising executive who's just bet that he can make a woman fall in love with him in ten days; if he succeeds, he'll win a huge account that will make his career. The set-up is completely absurd, but the collision of their efforts to woo and repel creates some pretty funny scenes. McConaughey's easy charm and Hudson's lightweight impishness play well together and the plot, though strictly Hollywood formula, chugs along efficiently. At moments Hudson seems to channel her mother, Goldie Hawn, to slightly unnerving effect. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars Charming and playful, a film that serves up the goods..........2007-09-14

I think what makes me just love `How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days' is none other than Kate Hudson. Her performance is just so hilariously charming it's almost impossible not to fall in love with her here. I say almost because I've read a few reviews that suggest the other alternative. To me though, while the film is clichéd, it still manages to rise above the majority of romantic comedies today with a surprisingly warm performance by Hudson and an even more surprisingly charming performance by McConaughey. I think it would be safe to say that Matthew general fails to really impress me. I just don't see the hype behind his good looks. Sure he's got a body but aside from that he's void of any real qualities that help him stand out and embrace the audience. He's like Paul Walker to me. Not really an ounce of acting ability but a charming smile and good hair. Here though, and maybe it's just Hudson creating the perfect atmosphere, but he seems to be a little more in control of his scenes and comfortable in his skin. I actually believed he was a living breathing person and not a manikin with a smile.

The film centers around two people needing to prove something. First there's Andie Anderson, a beautiful journalist for a woman's fashion magazine who just wants her shot at writing the articles that intrigue her. Basically she wants to break away from shoes and write about war. In order to get her chance she has to write an article on the dating don'ts, the mistakes women make in relationships, namely, how to lose a guy in ten days. In order to do this she has to find a man, make him love her and then drive him away chronicling the entire experience for her article. Then we have Ben, an advertising exec who wants to break into the diamond market. In order to win the opportunity to pitch a campaign to a wealthy diamond exporter he has to prove his undeniable charm by getting a woman to fall in love with him. The woman that is chosen is Andie. So Ben needs to attain Andie's love all the while Andie needs to drive Ben away and if either fails then they lose all that they are trying so hard to attain.

Of course we all know that in the end they fall in love, but getting there is a lot of fun. As charming as Matthew is as Ben its Hudson's Andie that steals the show. Even in her insanity she is irresistible. Not only is she a knock out (so beautiful) but she knows how to accentuate her greatest asset, her personality. Kate Hudson is larger than life here and she perfectly switches between charming aspiring journalist to charming crazed lunatic. Her comedic timing is great here. Whether she's going bananas over photo-shopped pictures of her family with Ben or swooning over her secret crush while he works a room full of diamond buyers, Hudson is on top of her game. You can definitely see her mother in her eyes and that's a good thing, a very good thing. Sadly Kate has moved on to duller comedies instead of embracing her talent with more suitable work. Some have mentioned that this was the beginning of the end of her career, but I like to think of this as her last great effort. Sure, it's no `Almost Famous', and dear god I hope one day she returns to those glory days, but it's still a great romantic comedy that fits it's leading lady about as well as that yellow dress (when you see the movie you'll know the one).

Great Movie. Most of us woman or man have made giant mistakes in relationships. This movie helps us laugh at those mistakes. In fact, the movie is full of laughs. Even the little dog is funny. This is definitely not your usual boy meets girl. For those of you who like chick flicks this is definitely a good one. I highly recommend this movie.

5 out of 5 stars The moment of truth on the Brooklyn Bridge.......2007-07-17

Andie Anderson, "How to" columnist for Composure magazine (who really wants to be an investigative and intellectual reporter Economist-style) is assigned a piece on How to Lose a Guy in 10 days. Benjamin Barry, ad executive, wants to win a lucarative diamond account by having a woman fall in love with him in 10 days. These two meet and its a series of fireworks that have them trying to outdo themselves. Andie goes textbook clingy, needy, and all sorts of things designed to drive Ben away. Ben is the consumate charmer who is nearly driven crazy with Andie's antics. Ben has a few moves of his own from flowers, couples therapy, gourmet cooking, and taking care of an exotic toy dog in his jock style apartment. The moment of truth arrives when Ben wins the bet, Andie is crushed, and the two fight it out at a star-studded event. Turns out both got more than they bargained for and Andie's How to piece becomes a confesssion that she really does like Ben. Ben finds out that her article is her last (Andie is moving to Washington, DC to be a serious journalist) while filming a diamond commercial and hops on his morotcycle to confront Andie about his own feelings. Her respone "I meant every word". His reply "Then why are you going?"

Really didn't LOVE this movie until I was able to watch it several times. Now, I am so happy that it is part of my collection. Kate and Matthew have a chemistry that makes for great viewing. The things that Kate does to drive Matt crazy are hilarious and, unfortunately, all to true of us at times. Worth the cost to be able to enjoy it over and over again.

My husband and I laugh over and over again every time we watch this movie. It is sooo funny. Love wins over in the end and that is what I like to see!

Elia Kazan's pedal-to-the-metal approach to psychosexual melodrama paid off handsomely when he had layered material by Tennessee Williams or John Steinbeck to work with. The very raw material here is an original by hot-blooded playwright William Inge, about a pair of teenagers in the American Midwest in the 1920s whose lives are ruined by the repressive sexual climate of the period. The girl, played by Natalie Wood, is literally driven batty by her pent-up adolescent lust and ends up in the bin---which admittedly plays better than sounds, because the hunk she yearns for is the young and almost impossibly handsome Warren Beatty. This is a very lush and beautiful movie, but also a deeply silly one. It's grade-A American cheese, with a pinch of dime-store Freud on top.--David Chute

5 out of 5 stars THE SEXUAL REVOLUTION IN THE 1960'S IS ABOUT TO BEGIN WITH SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS! .......2007-08-29

I am writing a review on the legendary historic breakthrough movie entitled "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" starring two of Hollywood's all-time greatest movie icons ever. I give you the multi-talented and always beautiful, the late great NATALIE WOOD and the young star that would be born and introduced to the entire world as WARREN BEATTY. "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" was originally released in 1961 by Warner Brothers.

When I watch "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" today, it is extremely hard to believe that this is how our parents and our grandparents actually grew up and lived. This is our elders in their youth living by the old-fashioned values that their parents were brought up believing in. To many of you, this movie may seem like a bore, but in reality, look how far moviemaking has come. Please remember that this movie was made and released in 1961. This is exactly what I meant when I stressed in many of my other NATALIE WOOD movie reviews that NATALIE was the barrier between the old-fashioned actresses of yesterday and the independent and liberated actresses of today. Nothing could have proved this theory more than the movie "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS." This movie is actually NATALIE WOOD screaming out of her shell on the screen and daring to be independent and liberated on behalf of all of the women in the world. "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" was truly far ahead of its time.

In the 1960's, movies really beat around the bush or hid many sexual subject matters in the closet. In a way, "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" was an attempt in bringing these sexual subject matters out of the closet before our very eyes. To make it short, "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" is about the sexual tension building up between two youths (Or virgins) that do not understand how they feel especially since the two have never had a sexual experience together. The movie actually explores the sexual frustration between the two who feel dirty thinking impure thoughts about sex. The two never had a chance considering the wrong advise that the two youths were getting from their parents. In today's society, it is acceptable to have sex before marriage. When our parents and grandparents were growing up, their parents mandated and raised them to have sex after they are married. In a way, "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" is the most breakthrough movie as far as giving birth to the sexual revolution in the 1960's. Also, what "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" did for the youth movement in the 1960's is what "THE WILD ONE" and "REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE" did in the 1950's. These legendary movies would all singlehandedly give birth to the liberation and independence of the youth movement.

As for the acting in "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS," NATALIE WOOD was magnificent! You can see by her acting roles that she was ready to blossom and come of age by coming out of her closet and shock us even more with her more daring and complex roles. "REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE" prepared WOOD for "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS." "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" would prepare WOOD as an independent and liberated actress to tackle roles in movies such as "LOVE WITH A PROPER STRANGER," "GYPSY," "WEST SIDE STORY," "SEX & THE SINGLE GIRL" and "BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE" to name a few.

"SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" would introduce an actor that was then a newcomer in the world of moviemaking. In a way, NATALIE WOOD gave us WARREN BEATTY. BEATTY'S good looks and charm was irresistible to every woman in the entire world including WOOD herself. Wow, what I wouldn't give to be WARREN BEATTY at that very moment. The chemistry between WOOD and BEATTY on and off screen is the real Hollywood stuff that is made of legend.

If you haven't seen this movie yet, please find a way and watch this movie somehow. When you see this movie, you will realize how made we really have it today as far as expressing ourselves freely and discussing sexual subject matters in the open as compared to hiding it in the closet like it was in the past. In a way, "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" opened the doors for all of the other movies that were yet to come. In my opinion, "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" is one of the very few movies that would contribute in giving birth to the sexual revolution in the 1960's that the youths can relate with. Believe it or not, even the youths of today can identify with it. "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" besides "REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE," really put NATALIE WOOD on the Hollywood map forever. So here's to you NATALIE and WARREN. I will always love you NATALIE. May you always rest in peace. Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that you will continue in reading all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. NATALIE WOOD FOREVER! R.I.P. NATASHA NIKOLAEVNA ZACHARENKO A.K.A. NATALIE WOOD, Born 20 July 1938, Died 27 November 1981 at age 43. Forever in Entertainment, John L.

Natalie Woods play a excellent part of a young High School girl in love with her High School sweetheart, played by Warren Beatty(screen debut)torn by beening respected by her mother's wishes and her human desires. This movie moved her from a child actress to a major player in the movie industry in adult roles.

5 out of 5 stars Splendor alright.......2007-05-28

Splendor in the grass is a wonderful old Hollywood film. It's no wonder that Natalie Wood was a "million mens" dreamgirl. She is breath-taking and multi-dimensional in this film. The acting is emotional, and the actions cliff hanging in this beautiful story of love and letting go. It's a must see for anyone who loves old Hollywood classics.
