god, this movie rocks! almost the whole movie makes me laugh and christina milian is smokin' hott throughout the entire movie. she was so hot during the beach scene i thought i was gonna lose it! the part where he sprays the binaca in his eyes was halarious! go see or buy this movie cause i love it and the ending has some hott lip action. i just wish i was the guy [alvin] so i could make out with her and hang with her for 2 weeks. too bad i don't have $1500 bucks! anyway, i LOVE this movie and it's cute, insparational, and halariously funny.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Surprise.......2006-08-28

I was set against watching this movie for it looked generic and stupid, but it was a lazy day Saturday and it was on TV so I gave it a shot and much to my enjoyment it wasn't half bad. I've always felt Nick Cannon was funny, but it was Christina Milian who really impressed me. She's a very talented young girl, with her acting as well as her singing, and she brings the best of both here in this film. I will say though that I am not a fan of Steve Harvey and I don't really think he'll ever do something I enjoy...his character to me was nothing special and would have preferred he be played by anyone else, but alas, he didn't take away anything from the film so he was tolerable.

The film itself is a remake of the '87 comedy `Can't Buy Me Love', which I've never seen but probably will rent just for kicks. It's a story about Alvin (Cannon) who's the super smart nerd in school who wishes that just once he could experience popularity. When Paris (Milian), one of the most popular girls in school, damages her mother's car and needs help in a hurry Alvin is there is offer his assistance in exchange for a chance to be cool. Paris agrees to fake a two-week relationship with Alvin in order to get him in with her crowd and then they'll split up publicly and continue with their newfound lives.

Over the course of the film the predictable plot thickens, for we all know that Alvin and Paris will fall in love and end up together, but how this happens of course will have it's twists and turns and they will try and make us believe they won't get together but we all know how it will end. That said, it's still a fun ride, with great chemistry between the two leads, Cannon showing great comedic range and Milian giving us warmth in what could have been a very generic role. Bottom line is, while it's nothing new, it's still a fun way to spend an afternoon.

5 out of 5 stars this movie rocks!.......2006-08-27

yhis movie is the best in the world! i have been watching it non-stop for 5 days in a row and i'm not bored o f it yet! i love christina milian and nick cannon is halarious. when he says "morning, dime pices!" i laughed so hard! and when he said he was "going to the beach to check out some breezies and kick it with his crew" was really funny too i love this movie and anyone who says `ootherwise needs to be taken out and shot!

20th Century Fox present "JACKIE ROBINSON STORY" (Released 1950) (76 mins) (Fully Restored/Dolby Digitally Remastered) --- now in COLOR and Glorious Black and White --- The Jackie Robinson Story, 1950 biographical film starring baseball legend Jackie Robinson as himself --- Robinson became the first African American Major League Baseball player of the modern era in 1947 --- Even during its release in the era of segregation, the film did remarkably at the box office. Robinson's achievement has been recognized by the retirement by each Major League team of his uniform number, 42 --- On April 19, 2005, 20th Century Fox and Legend Films released a colorized version of the film, donating a portion of the proceeds to The Jackie Robinson Foundation, a charity which benefits education for gifted students. Green (Director), Mort Briskin (Producer), Arthur Mann (Screenwriter), Louis Pollock (Short Story Author), Lawrence Edmund Taylor (Screenwriter), Ernest Laszlo (Cinematographer), David Chudnow (Composer (Music Score), Herschel Burke Gilbert (Composer (Music Score), Arthur H. Nadel (Editor), Maurie M. Suess (Editor) - - - - - A wonderful film that acts as a homage to Jackie Robinson (played by himself). The early life of the first black Major League baseball player is shown in a way that makes the picture wholesome and appropriate for all audiences --- Ruby Dee is perfect as Robinson's loving wife who stands behind her husband when it seems that no one else will --- "The Jackie Robinson Story" was made in 1950, the social issues and the intense prejudices that Robinson faced are only given a minute glimpse --- Robinson was just as important to Civil Rights as people who fought vehemently for equality in the 1960s --- The integration of baseball is something that most never believed would happen before 1947 and many forget just how important a piece of American history that is --- wonderful production with much respect to a great hero and human being.

This movie was a great explanation of the Jackie Robinson Story. My 7th Grade Language Arts Literature book contains "The Noble Experiment" and we read it at the start of baseball season which also happened to be black history month. It is a great combination for the children learning experience. The movie was a great compliment to this story.

JACKIE ROBINSON "IS" THE RIGHT MAN TO GET THE JOB DONE!

OVERVIEW:

It has been said that the best 3 things about America are "The Constitution", "Jazz", and "Baseball". Well, in 1946 it was time for Major League Baseball to ante up and rise to join the big leagues. "The Jackie Robinson Story" is the tale of an important journey on that bumpy road that America, through Major League baseball, finally and convulsively faced.

WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT?

Things anyone should be able to take for granted were considered out of the reach for too many Americans who were victims of a system that had hung around far too long. Jackie Robinson, by virtue of his talent and to a larger measure his solid character, was the right man at the right time to get the job done.

The "color line", an invisible wall that never should have been constructed, was voluntarily destructed but it was not easy. This film tells us how this barrier was approached and the attitudes of those on all sides of the question. In many cases, it was not a pretty picture.

Branch Rickey, owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, has the unique distinction of taking the moral high road while acting in the best interests of his team, his sport, and his country.

Jackie Robinson, who plays himself in the movie (and does it very well), is clearly a human being that deserves the opportunities he gets and he earns everyone's respect in the process, fans and foes alike.

MUCH MORE THAN JUST A SPORT MOVIE BIOGRAPHY:

Yes, it is a taut and compelling film involving major league baseball and human rights. More than that, it illustrates the naked, blind cruelty that seemed to grip people from all walks of life over the color issue as well as the sterling characters of a few mavericks. This is a film that shows more than it tells and that is always the best way to present a story.

THE CAST:

Jackie Robinson plays himself and of course needs no introduction. Ruby Dee plays the young woman he marries and who demonstrates the same brand of courage as her husband. Ruby Dee later starred along side Sidney Poitier in "A Raisin In The Sun" and as Jackie Robinson's mother in the 1990 TV movie "The Court Martial of Jackie Robinson. Minor Watson plays Dodgers owner Branch Richey and portrays him as a rough-but-fair businessman who is obviously disgusted over the "color line" in baseball and is the man who finally facilitates its overdue termination.

ABOUT THE DVD: This DVD is a Digiview Production and is "Digitally Remastered" in Black and White.

5 out of 5 stars Pass it on.......2005-09-21

This is a very heartwarming story of perseverance by one of the best ball players of the era. A model citizen in a difficult position, Jackie shows all of us how to respond to adversity and prejudice. I bought this DVD for my son.
In case you didn't notice this is the only DVD of this movie with close-captioning AND a color option.

5 out of 5 stars Jackie Robinson DVD Breaks the COLOR Barrier!.......2005-06-07

What an inspirational movie! Jackie Robinson stars as himself in this entertaining sports and family classic. It chronicles his life, from youth, through his college career at UCLA, to his rise to legend with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Jackie triumphs over racial injustices and emerges as nothing less than one of America's true heroes. If you have a child playing baseball, or any sport, The Jackie Robinson Story is an important film for them to watch.

Presented in color for the first time and beautifully restored, this is the definitive DVD edition of The Jackie Robinson Story. Released in conjunction with The Jackie Robinson Foundation which benefits education for gifted students.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for boxing fans.......2006-03-23

I gifted this to my dad, who is a boxing fan. He absolutely loved it. 6 hours of great boxing. I would recommend this to anyone who like boxing or ALI or both.

5 out of 5 stars Priceless.......2006-02-02

This three-disc documentary about the career of Muhammad Ali is amazing, worth more than 100 miscast biopics put together. It tells the whole story, from his youth to his gold medal to his ascension to the championship to his exile from the sport and right through to the end of his fighting days and his later-life bout with Parkinson's. It works for fans of Ali, obviously, but it also works if you want a general primer on boxing history or even an overview of the social, cultural, and political tumult of the 60's. Love him or hate him, the man is an icon, and this has all the footage and all the interviews with all the people who know and were there. An absolute must-have.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest documentary about Muhammad Ali of all time.......2005-09-10

When you pose with Muhammad Ali for photographs what he likes to do is have you make a fist and put it up against the side of the face while he assumes a boxing pose, so you look like you are landing a heavy blow against the only man ever to win the heavyweight boxing title three times. However, when it was my turn to pose there was no way on earth I was going to pretend I was beating up on the Champ, so I just wanted to shake hands. This gave Ali a chance to give me bunny ears.

"Muhammad Ali: The Whole Story" is a six-part documentary that chronicles legendary career: (1) "The Beginning: Olympic Gold" covers his years as an amateur. There is very little about Ali's career before he began boxing (one of the stories his mother tells is how as a baby he hit her in the mouth and loosened a tooth: "his first knockout" she says proudly). (2) "The Youngest Heavyweight" looks at the start of Cassius Clay's professional career, leading up to his winning the heavyweight crown from Sonny Liston. (3) "Exile" contrasts Muhammad Ali's title defenses with the rises problems tied to both his conversion to Islam and his refusal to be drafted, which ends with him being stripped of his title.

Disc B begins with (4) "The Road Back," where it takes three years for Ali to get another fight, culminating in losing his first fight to Joe Frazier. (5) "The Rumble in the Jungle" ends with Ali winning back the title from George Foreman, after breaking his jaw and losing to Ken Norton. Finally, (6) "The Thrilla in Manila" makes the third and final fight with Joe Frazier the centerpiece for the end of Ali's career, with less attention being paid to Ali losing and winning back the title from Michael Spinks than to the final title fight with Larry Holmes, after which Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson's Syndrome.

Ali is not interviewed for this documentary, although he appears in some shots at the end. Talking about the champ is left to the men who worked in his corner (e.g., Angelo Dundee), the men that he fought (e.g., Ken Norton), the reporters who covered the fights (e.g., Howard Cosell), and the women that he married (e.g., Lonnie Ali). Their recollections and insights are offered in between, and sometimes during, film and video of Ali's fights, news footage, and television appearances (including Ali singing on "The Ed Sullivan Show" with the cast from the Broadway musical he did while in exile). For most of the key fights in Ali's career there are extended sequences and not just highlights. By the time you get to the Foreman and final Frazier fights it seems odd that there are commentators talking throughout the fight because most of the early fights are without commentary, and while directors Joseph and Sandra Consentino sometimes like the likes of Ali's trainer Angelo Dundee provide some insight, more often than not they just add nothing to what we are watching.

The strength of this documentary is that we get to watch Ali fight and listen to him talk more than we do the others. Even when we get to the talking heads we hear more from Dundee and journalist Jerry Izenberg than we do from Howard Cosell (which reminds me of an interesting omission: we do not get to the point following the first Liston fight when Clay yells, "I'm a bad man!"). Also, what they have to say is usually descriptive, telling what they remember, rather than trying to offer explanations for the subject. That is until the end, when there is an obvious attempt to put Ali in perspective. This is led primarily to Lonnie Ali, which is a smart move because there is nobody who is going to be more articulate on that score than Ali's wife.

The one thing I wanted more of from this 1996 television documentary was an explanation of Ali's fighting technique. At one point Angelo Dundee is talking about how Ali had three main punches with the left jab setting up his right upper cut and his left hook. So I really wanted to see some examples of this from some of these fights. But there are only a couple of times when a specific knockout punch is looked at in any detail (e.g., the "phantom" punch from the second Liston fight and the four-punch combination that dropped George Foreman). Overall the lesson is that when he was young Ali was too quick too hit, and later on when he slowed down he discovered he could take a punch. Add that throughout his career Ali was usually in better condition and was always smarter, and that is the legacy with which we are left. Clearly with Ali we are talking about the "art" of boxing, but a bit more of the "science" of the sport would be nice too.

5 out of 5 stars Muhammad Ali - The Whole Story.......2005-07-21

This is a great DVD. I have learned a lot about the man, and so has my husband who realizes he is learning a lot more than he thought he would. We are really glad we bought it, and recommend it highly.

The vintage film biography The Jackie Robinson Story is unusual in that Robinson portrays himself, and the movie was produced in 1950, barely three years after he took up his position at second base for the Brooklyn Dodgers and broke the "color line" in professional baseball. After providing a fast portrayal of Robinson's early life, up to his collegiate sports career at UCLA and his stint in the U.S. Army, the story turns serious when Branch Rickey offers him a contract to play for a Brooklyn Dodgers farm team. Interestingly, some of the scenes, such as an incident when Robinson and his teammates were being locked out of a stadium at a spring training game in Florida, may have more impact with viewers today than when the film was first released. --Robert J. McNamara

Description

In this "four-star, straightforward account" (Blockbuster Entertainment Guide) of the man who opened athletic doors for people of all ethnicities, Jackie Robinson plays himself so well that "he can drop the diamond for the sound stages any day he chooses" (The Hollywood Reporter)! Jackie Robinson's uphill battle to the big leagues began when he was just a little boy. Given a mitt and a chance, Jackie easily proved how good he was on the field. But it would take more than just his amazing talent to get him to the top. Being African American in a time of racial discord, Jackie had to break through impossible barriers to get his shot. By playing hard and overcoming unbelievable odds, Jackie proved that he was not only one of the best players ever to set foot on a majorleague diamond, but also one of the bravest men ever to grace American sports!

4 out of 5 stars It could have been better...but not by much!!! .......2006-09-01

This film is rich in historical details in both the baseball and theatrical senses...It uses some of the great black actors and actresses of day and weaves them together into a truly great document of the time by using the great Jackie Robinson himself to portray his own life story...although it is a whitewashed and watered down portrayal of the great rabbidness and maliciousness of american racism, it must be understood that white folk produced this movie and by definition cannot convey the full impact of American racism from the Black perspective...

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating, but..........2006-08-03

The "Jackie Robinson Story" is remarkable in that, much like Robinson had done for baseball, it is among the first Hollywood films to tackle America's racial divide. What makes it more interesting for today is that Jackie Robinson plays himself.

While the film still has an impact, the complete story of all that Robinson had to go through was toned down drastically for a mass 1950 audience. The film is also full of '40's film cliches it has plenty of schlock for comic relief. The power of the whole truth, and Jackie Robinson's great achievement, needs to be told on screen in a modern film.

in the meantime I recommend reading Arnold Rampersad's biography of Jackie Robinson or Robinson's autobiography "I Never Had It Made." to go along with this film.

5 out of 5 stars JACKIE ROBINSON "IS" THE RIGHT MAN TO GET THE JOB DONE!.......2005-11-22

3 out of 5 stars Good movie!.......2005-10-30

I found it amazing that the film was released during the 50's. The language was harsh for the times and was very daring and un-Hollywood like. Hall of Fame great Jackie Robinson plays himself in the movie. This film could have used an established actor to play him. Even though he was rough around the edges acting wize, Robinson is still entertaining enough for the movie to succeed. The print is in need of restoration. I certainly hope the company who owns the original copy considers saving the print before it's lost forever.

5 out of 5 stars One of the very best movies.......2005-04-04

I remember watching this movie when I was much younger, and I enjoyed it then as well as now; His story has always fascinated and we all show own a copy of his movie to see that even though at a time when our men were not necessarily in the big league, they had their own, and when they did, they gave of their best;

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-03-15

What's Amazing is the fact that this DVD is sold in the bargain basement grocery bins. I guess that shows that it really pays to at least take a peek at those bargain bins, sometimes you can find a real treasure--and this certainly fits the bill. I had never seen it on TV so I took it home and popped it into the DVD player so that I could at least get a chance to see Jackie Robinson play himself. It was interesting to view the events of Jackie's historical accomplishment on film in black in white during the era in which it actually happened. I am sure the directors had to brave some obstacles of their own in order to get the film released. This is a good story that was done well for it's time and it serves as an incredible piece of history.

Of note are some of the comments made by members of the Negro League as they try to "school" a curious Jackie on the bus en route to another game. Their conversations tell of the hardships for African American baseball players during the Jim Crow era, including the fact that there were no contract for Negro League players and they were not allowed to use public facilities or sit at lunch counters.

I especially enjoyed seeing a young Ruby Dee playing Jackie's wife. Jackie is fine playing himself. He's no actor but it certainly was a smart move to capture him hitting his own homers and performing great outfield feats. One can only imagine what he must have felt on the inside as hostile crowds jeered and called out obscenities. Robinson had to brave the name calling and personal threats while while mustering up the courage not to give in to the inclination to fight back. For that strength he was well respected and rewarded. Some of those difficult crowds cheered him on when as he later won the pennant for the Dodgers.

Some say the film deserves a remake. I say they got it right the first time. This is one film that belongs in every DVD collection.

    Description

Scandalize My Name: Stories from the Blacklist examines the way Red Scare politics was used to impede the emergence of African-Americans as full participants in the political, social and cultural aspects of post-war American life. Because television was born in this era, and adopted the political attitudes of the time, the story is told through the confrontation of African-American performers with blacklists, loyalty oaths and discrimination in casting. Hosted by three-time Academy Award® nominee Morgan Freeman, Scandalize My Name is brought to life by African-American directors, actors and scholars who used their talents to advocate for social and cultural equality.

4 out of 5 stars Talk about "the Black and the Red".......2005-06-08

This documentary shows that McCarthy and his House Unamerican Activities Committee went after Black artists, just as it did to whites.

The documentary starts with Morgan Freeman, imitating many other PBS narrators, pretending like he's reading a book and then speaking to the camera. This introduction had me rolling on the floor. This documentary features Harry Belafonte and the elderly actress from the TV series "Amen." It also includes Ossie Davis (surprisingly, sans Ruby Dee) before he passed. This may bring a tear to the eyes of his fans. This work does an effective job of showing how any progressive Black artist interested in Civil Rights could be misconstrued and punished as a supposed Communist. Urban Works, which usually produces pop cultural modern pieces, did a great job in venturing out into this historic, serious endeavor.

There are many scenes of Black actors during the early days of TV and films. Perhaps viewers should watch this documentary alongside the many documentaries on the history of Black Hollywood.

    4 out of 5 stars A Must See Film.......2005-05-25

I have not yet recieved it but I just stumbled across it on television. If you are interested in this Era or you are an artist or interested in the arts this is a great piece. It's essential to know the struggles artists as a whole went through during the Blacklist and often you never hear about the African American experience during that time period. This film includes accounts from famous African American artist, several of which are still alive. This piece opened my eyes. The only downfall I could say was that the film was a little short and like with many things you don't get to see the names more than once. But otherwise I think it's great resource. Buy this film!
