Celtic Woman, the PBS sensation, returns for 2007 in A New Journey: Live at Slane Castle, Ireland. Most of the elements return as well: vocalists Chloe, Meav, Lisa, and Orla; fiery fiddler Mairead; music director David Downes; chorus and orchestra; and the New Age-y Celtic and traditional music. New for this show is New Zealand vocalist Hayley Westenra, a picturesque outdoor location, and an almost entirely new song list. Chloe sings "The Prayer" (made famous by Josh Groban) and "Panis Angelicus"; Lisa covers "Caledonia," "The Blessing," and "The Voice"; Orla sings "Newgrange" and accompanies herself on harp for "Carrickfergus"; Meav sings "Dulaman"; Mairead plays "Granuaile's Dance" and "Shenandoah: The Pacific Slope"; and Hayley sings "Scarborough Fair" by herself and duets with Mairead (Handel's "Lascia Ch'io Pianga") and Meav ("The Last Rose of Summer"). Then of course the group performs together ("The Sky and the Dawn and the Sun," "Over the Rainbow," "Beyond the Sea," "At the Ceili," "Sing Out!", "Spanish Lady," "Mo Ghile Mear"). Encore performances from the original show are Enya's "Orinoco Flow," "Danny Boy," "Somewhere," and "You Raise Me Up." Hayley proves to be an excellent fit among the beautiful voices, and Lisa seems to emerge as the talent most deserving of attention, but overall the show lacks some of the fresh sparkle of the original. The song list isn't quite as strong, and some of the "primp and pose" choreography is just silly. But Celtic Woman is never less than charming, and at its best can be quite stirring. --David Horiuchi

Music, sound, live production 5 stars / DVD production 3 stars.......2007-09-13
If you simply like the music of Celtic Woman, then this DVD is 5 stars hands down. The music is beautiful, and the production is incredible.
If you are a sound or production tech, I highly recommend watching this just for the quality of the recording, micing, and staging. I personally would have EQed the violin a little differently, but everything else was a wonderful natural sound.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the sound was a few microseconds off from the video. Hardly noticeable to the average viewer, but extremely annoying to those of us who do notice. Also, there are no subtitles, but it has a subtitle track. The subtitle tract doesn't work, but it is there.
I can just imagine the irritation of those who sweated and agonized over making this such a wonderful presentation only to have the DVD processing company mess up the sound sync, and the subtitles.
Perhaps they fixed these flaws in later releases of the DVD, but I've verified that the version I have is due to a production problem. It isn't due to a flawed disk, or DVD player.
Gary the Celtic Music Lover.......2007-09-13
This program was one of the finest examples of the wonderful sounding music to come out of the Irish Countryside. These ladies are some of the best talented in the world. Just to listen and to see their action while preforming is a indication of their love of the country and the music.
Celtic Woman.......2007-09-05
I love Celtic Women music! You can't go wrong with any of them. I highly recommend this one along with all the others I have purchased! If you haven't heard them, you have really missed a wonderful experience!
Celtic Woman-A New Journey: at Slane Castle, Ireland.......2007-09-02

Great Concert !!!.......2007-09-01
I have seen this concert on PBS 2 times. I loved it. So today I am buying the DVD and CD combo. Now I can watch it all the time. I love listening to Haley Westerna sing. She is my favorite. Also I like Chloe, singing The Prayer. The background scenes of the Slane Castle in Ireland are awsome. My husband and I would like to go Ireland to see the castles someday.
Anyone buying this DVD will not be disappointed.

When you consider that old-fashioned tearjerkers are an endangered species in Hollywood, a movie like The Notebook can be embraced without apology. Yes, it's syrupy sweet and clogged with clichés, and one can only marvel at the irony of Nick Cassavetes directing a weeper that his late father John--whose own films were devoid of saccharine sentiment--would have sneered at. Still, this touchingly impassioned and great-looking adaptation of the popular Nicholas Sparks novel has much to recommend, including appealing young costars (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) and appealing old costars (James Garner and Gena Rowlands, the director's mother) playing the same loving couple in (respectively) early 1940s and present-day North Carolina. He was poor, she was rich, and you can guess the rest; decades later, he's unabashedly devoted, and she's drifting into the memory-loss of senile dementia. How their love endured is the story preserved in the titular notebook that he reads to her in their twilight years. The movie's open to ridicule, but as a delicate tearjerker it works just fine. Message in a Bottle and A Walk to Remember were also based on Sparks novels, suggesting a triple-feature that hopeless romantics will cherish. --Jeff Shannon

SAME OLD STORY NEVER TOLD SO WELL!.......2007-09-12
This sweet little love story rises above all it's cliches because of the likable stars and story that moves along briskly. The love story in sad enough, but the Alzheimer's angle really tears your heart out! I watched this because my wife wanted to watch it on our anniversary. I was surprised how much I liked it.....so guys don't squirm too much if your babe wants to watch this one, it's a good story and I admired Gosling's tenacity and devotion to his true love. One of the better romances I've seen in a while, so I rate it 4 stars, but it's definitely a 5 tissue movie! This was mostly because of the Alzheimer's part of the film, it's a tragic disease and having dealt with it in my family it was a little too close to home. The DVD transfer looks very good and the are some interesting extras.
BEST.LOVESTORY.EVER. Ryan Gosling is AMAZING!.......2007-08-31
I fell in love with not only this beautiful story but Ryan Gosling!!!! This is just a fantastic movie and I really can't find better words to describe it. Watch it. Own it. Love it forever!! It is my all-time favorite!!
I'm still a sucker.......2007-08-27
...for these tear jerkers. This movie will go down as a romance classic- a forbidden love about two people from the wrong side of the tracks-Romeo and Juliet for the 1940's, if you will. This film hits all my cheesy love spots and turn up aces with me. McAdams/Goslin were great as well as Garner and Rowland. This is a must see for all Chick movie lovers. Highly recommended.
~Have a box of tissue handy~.......2007-08-08
Although I'm not going to give away any spoilers ... this is a love story like no others. I think that everyone can relate on some level to this movie. You will fall in love with this couple & become drawn in to their story. I recommended this to my mother who after the movie called up crying her eyes out. Even my husband enjoyed this movie. If your looking for a movie that will make you laugh, cry & touch your heart ... this is a must-see.
Beautiful Tale Well Told.......2007-07-25
If you haven't read the book, the movie will not leave you feeling short changed.
A marvellous story about lovers, life and loss.
Highly recommended.
If you're interested, once you watch the movie, read the book The Wedding - it is the follow up from The Notebook.

The extended edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was perhaps the most comprehensive DVD release to date, and its follow-up proves a similarly colossal achievement, with significant extra footage and a multitude of worthwhile bonus features. The extended version of The Two Towers adds 43 minutes to the theatrical version's 179-minute running time, and there are valuable additions to the film. Two new scenes might appease those who feel that the characterization of Faramir was the film's most egregious departure from the book, and fans will appreciate an appearance of the Huorns at Helm's Deep plus a nod to the absence of Tom Bombadil. Seeing a little more interplay between the gorgeous Eowyn and Aragorn is welcome, as is a grim introduction to Eomer and Theoden's son. And among the many other additions, there's an extended epilogue that might not have worked in the theater, but is more effective here in setting up The Return of the King. While the 30 minutes added to The Fellowship of the Ring felt just right in enriching the film, the extra footage in The Two Towers at times seems a bit extraneous--we see moments that in the theatrical version we had been told about, and some fleshed-out conversations and incidents are rather minor. But director Peter Jackson's vision of J.R.R. Tolkien's world is so marvelous that it's hard to complain about any extra time we can spend there.
While it may seem that there would be nothing left to say after the bevy of features on the extended Fellowship, the four commentary tracks and two discs of supplements on The Two Towers remain informative, fascinating, and funny, far surpassing the recycled materials on the two-disc theatrical version. Highlights of the 6.5 hours' worth of documentaries offer insight on the stunts, the design work, the locations, and the creation of Gollum, and--most intriguing for rabid fans--the film's writers (including Jackson) discuss why they created events that weren't in the book. Providing variety are animatics, rough footage, countless sketches, and a sound-mixing demonstration. Again, the most interesting commentary tracks are by Jackson and writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens and by 16 members of the cast (eight of whom didn't appear in the first film, and even including John Noble, whose Denethor character only appears in this extended cut). The first two installments of Peter Jackson's trilogy have established themselves as the best fantasy films of all time, and among the best film trilogies of all time, and their extended-edition DVD sets have set a new standard for expanding on the already-epic films and providing comprehensive bonus features. --David Horiuchi

Awesomness.......2007-08-27
This edition is a must own. I loved the deleted and extended scenes, it just brought everything together perfectly and seamlessly. The soundtrack on this is probably my favorite from all 3 films. It is simply an exquisite movie and a sure classic. many people have complained about the lack of beginning or end to this but surely by now everyone must know that this is not a sequal, its a continuation, therefore, its SUPPOSED to be like that. And the length doesn't bother me either, I love longer movies, as long as they keep my interest.
Utterly sublime.......2007-08-16
This is the best edition of this indescribable movie they could have tried to produce. The commentary is super fun to listen to, over and over again. All the special features are just so enjoyable. GREAT BUY!
Outstanding.......2007-07-27
Probably the funniest of the 3. Wonderful story full of drama, moral examples, and deep meaning. It's hard to add to 1,964 reviews. It's not for the faint of heart.
Excelente aventura.......2007-05-13
A mi modo de ver fiel a la version escrita, aunque le hayan cortado la parte final para insertarla en el retorno del Rey. Como las otras dos pelicuals recomendable!.
Gotta Have All 3.......2007-04-27
the ring trilogy is the ultimate battle between good and evil...and the same struggle within, that we all must face...
if i could choose a character out of middle-earth, and become that character, i would choose king theoden...i watch his parts over and over..like "where is the horse and the rider?" and i love some of his other lines...like when his men say,"but we cannot defeat them" ...and theoden replys, "no" ... "but we will meet them in battle, none the less" or somethin' like that.(but that is in the third movie) :-)
...he's so dang tuff! and wears really cool armor.
i happen to like those hollywood battle scenes, alot, so i enjoy watching the battle at helm's deep, over and over.
and, of course, at the same time, we have little frodo...where the internal conflict resides...different kind of battle...but same problem...
"good 'vs' evil".
but i don't wanna be frodo...i want to be theoden.
who would you choose?
wake.

Gorgeous to listen to and gorgeous to look at, Celtic Woman is perfect PBS fare, sort of a Riverdance without the dancing. Drawing on the same New Age-y sound and propulsive energy as that show's solo-voice and choral numbers, the live concert features four attractive young women in strapless evening gowns with soaring voices backed by an orchestra, an Anuna-like chorus, and a large percussion section. The more traditional fare includes Méav Ni Mhaolchatha's "Danny Boy" and "She Moved Through the Fair," and Chloë Agnew's "Ave Maria" (the Bach-Gounod version). Movie and TV selections range from Agnew's "Walking in the Air" (The Snowman) and "Someday" (Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame) to Lisa Kelly's "May It Be" (the Enya song from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the King) and Órla Fallon's voice and harp rendition of "Harry's Game." A fifth woman, Máiréad Nesbitt, adds some variety by fiddling "The Butterfly" and "Ashokan Farewell" (best known as the theme from Ken Burns's The Civil War). Occasionally the singers join together, as in Enya's "Orinoco Flow," an a cappella rendition of West Side Story's "Somewhere," music director David Downes's composition "One World," and a stately version of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." Celtic Woman was created by Downes (like many of the other performers, a Riverdance veteran) along with Sharon Browne and Dave Kavanagh of the Celtic Collections record label. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
pleasant diversion from everyday life.......2007-09-16
This production of "Celtic Woman" is easily the better of the two Celtic Woman concert DVDs. It is elegantly performed and produced, with no pretentions. Such a nice thing to play, even if one is just listening to the music.
Sheer Magic.......2007-09-10
From the opening measures, this concert transports the viewer to a lost world where dreams are possible and the great mysteries reveal themselves through music.
Beyond expectation.......2007-08-31
I won't buy the idea that the performances were lip-synced. And the violin bow of Mairead was tilted occasionally for a well-known bowing technique for thinner sound, not so that it wouldn't touch the string.
It's refreshing to see that "uniqueness" doesn't always mean something radically and purposefully different (the concept mostly assumed in the modern art work). As long as the performers individually communicates through their performance, their work will automatically be unique, without the need to convey radically "new idea".
Not that easy to make these simple, known, and similar style pieces keep catching audience's attention continuously. Orchestration of both voices and instruments is great. And I personnally like the percussion performances. Overall, someone may be able to do differently, but will never be better.
First Concert.......2007-07-23
This is a Dvd of Celtic Woman's first concert. It is terrific. They give a great show with top quality music.
Galic era.......2007-07-08
If you like to listen to a fantasy kind of music then you will like this one. The girls have beautiful voices they merge in harmony smooth as silk. The Galic songs take you to a different land. It is just wonderful to listen to and dream of a far away place and time.
I highly recommend it i have one other of theirs too. Would like to get more
Product Description
Created by Ariellah, star performer and instructor of Tribal Fusion Bellydance, Contemporary Bellydance and Yoga Conditioning combines three vital components of bellydance training: * a physical conditioning regimen to develop flexibility and strength; * two sets of bellydance technique drills - basic and advanced - for improved muscle control and precision in executing bellydance isolations; * a sequence of contemporary bellydance combinations complete with transitions to form an elegant and evocative modern choreography.
Whichever form of bellydance you choose, this training system lays a solid foundation.
The flexibility and muscle conditioning section of the program consists of 3 yoga sessions that can be used as a warmup/cooldown or as a stand-alone daily yoga practice:
* Short yoga warmup (8 min.);
* Full yoga warmup (20 min.);
* Yoga cool down (8 min.)
The Yoga sessions focus on building lower body strength and opening the hips to achieve ease and precision in bellydance hipwork. A number of exercises open the chest and increase back flexibility to enhance torso isolations and make dance movement sinuous and fluid.
Bellydance technique drills (75 min.) include hipwork, upper body work, combined hips/upper body isolations and arms/hips coordination. They also include adding level changes to torso isolations and layering hipwork on traveling steps.
The style of Ariellah's choreographic work is contemporary Tribal Fusion bellydance. She breaks down 6 combinations, step-by-step, consisting of multiple movements and transitions. The combination sequence forms a choreography, practiced to two different songs, to encourage creative adaptation of steps and transitions set to music.
The performance section offers 3 spectacular Tribal Fusion / Gothic bellydance performance pieces.
The progam is set to ethereal ambient and club music with a flavor of magic and dark myst
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining as well as educational!.......2007-09-16
I found Ariellah's style easy to follow, and her explainations of movments very precise.
I am just a beginner in the tribal fusion style, and really enjoyed the entire Dvd!
Great DVD, from an amazing dancer.......2007-09-12
This dvd breaks down the moves the best. I am a belly dancer that does fusion style. I thought her arm drills were great for refining my arm movements, since that is my weak area. She is also good at reminding you to check your posture. If you can't do full yoga poses she tells you how to alter them slightly. You will definatly get a work out with this DVD. The drills are longer and well explained. If you are a beginner dancer though you should get Neon's Crash course belly dancer. It has graphics to show you how your hips and legs should be moving.
Ariellah Rocks!!!!.......2007-09-01
OMG! Please get this DVD! She is a wonderful teacher, and this dvd is packed. I hope to see another DVD from her in the future!
Wonder what a class with her is like? .......2007-09-01
I am a beginner, and now a fan of videos produced by World Dance New York, as I have been able to learn quite a bit from their Tribal Belly Dance line. Yoga for Dance intrigued me (I love both), and I was not disappointed.
I love Ariellah's style, and her method of teaching isolation movements is clear, precise - and exhausting. Many moves are deceptively difficult, and after a few minutes my body screams! Her emphasis on posture and "home position" is wonderful, and that posture actually eases much of my chronic back pain. The constant reminders to keep arms energised, creates a workout equal to lifting weights, and urges 'energy' all the way out to the fingertips. No laziness allowed!
The yoga cooldown, I find a bit inadequate after doing both sets of drill practices, so I go back to the 'short' yoga warm-up to augment. Not a big complaint, as with the organisation of the video it is easy to mix'n'match. The performances are gorgeous, the music is from my favourite genre (goth/industrial/ambient), and it is so considerate to include the credits so I know what to get.
As for the choreography - yea right! It's gonna take me alot more practice to lay that down proper, and I will enjoy every minute and misstep.
Very good value for the money, highly recommend to all interested in a more post-modern tribal style.
Can't Get Past the Goth Thing.......2007-08-31
This may be a great introduction to belly dance, but I will never find out as Ariellah gives me the creeps. I may be too old and to Midwest to see beyond her tatoos and vampire wannabe makeup. This DVD is going in the garage sale pile.

If Franz Kafka had been an animator and film director--oh, and a member of Monty Python's Flying Circus--this is the sort of outrageously dystopian satire one could easily imagine him making. However, Brazil was made by Terry Gilliam, who is all of the above except, of course, Franz Kafka. Be that as it may, Gilliam sure captures the paranoid-subversive spirit of Kafka's The Trial (along with his own Python animation) in this bureaucratic nightmare-comedy about a meek governmental clerk named Sam Lowry (Jonathan Pryce) whose life is destroyed by a simple bug. Not a software bug, a real bug (no doubt related to Kafka's famous Metamorphosis insect) that gets smooshed in a printer and causes a typographical error unjustly branding poor Sam as a miscreant.
The movie presents such an unrelentingly imaginative and savage vision of 20th-century bureaucracy that it almost became a victim of small-minded studio management itself--until Gilliam surreptitiously screened his cut for the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, who named it the best movie of 1985 and virtually embarrassed Universal into releasing it. This DVD version of Brazil is the special director's cut that first appeared in Criterion's comprehensive (and expensive) six-disc laser package in 1996. Although the DVD (at a fraction of the price) doesn't include that set's many extras, it's still a bargain. --Jim Emerson

Timeless.......2007-09-14
I have viewed Brazil on the big scrren whenever I have had the chance. With a newly puchased HDTV I decided I must own this cinematic masterpiece. It doesn't dissapoint. What amazes me is its political currency. Terrorism, personal surveillance, Big Brotherness, even cosmetic plastic surgery all seem familiar facts of life today. The future painted by Terry Gilliam is here now. The only downside to the adventure you will experience is that the tune "Brazil" will haunt your mind for weeks if not months after your viewing.
worth seeing again.......2007-04-05
Brazil isn't eveyone's cup of tea To me it is sort of a cross between the Beatles song "A Day in The Life" and a less serious version of "1984". When looking at the negetive reviews (one star?) try and keep in mind that the words "less serious" can be a fun thing if you have a little less stick up the.....well... Anyway if you like satire and the surreal you will probably find this enjoyable.
Don't understand any of the hype.......2007-03-30
I just made it through 45 minutes of this "classic" and had to stop. This is a frenetic, loud, short-attention-span mess. True science fiction ("Day the Earth Stood Still", "Silent Running," "The Fly") appeals to the inellect. I'm at 45 minutes and it has failed to engage my thinking on any level. It's just entertainment, pure and simple, and pretty unpleasant entertainment at that, aimed at a pretty simple-minded audience, I have to say. The set-ups, like the oh-so-sweet Christmas scene at the beginning are just out of place in this film. The arrest of Buttle was so ridiculously overdone that I thought I was watching a cartoon version of "The Terminator." The set-ups seem extremely heavy handed, as is the constant reminders of hte "Tuttle-Buttle" mixup. The use of the classic songs in this film "As Time Goes By" and "Brazil," is just a travesty. The goal seems to be to ruin the value of these songs rather than add anything meaningful to the film. Besides, there are more guns in the first 45 minutes of this film than in most Westerns. What's that all about? Was the NRA a major funder for this studio? You know when a film starts with an explosion that it's going to be pretty bad, unless it's James Bond, which this isn't!
future dystopia.......2007-03-25
Excellent film. It explores the inefficiencies of bureaucracy and paints a bleak picture of a police state, which seems ever more realistic. The acting is fantastic and the ideas presented in this movie are second to none. If you like this movie, also check out A Scanner Darkly and Logan's Run.
Brazil is NOW!.......2007-03-21
One of my all time favorite movies, chaos in it's finest hour of pure insanity. Has a mind of its own but can never be controlled just like the breathing air ducts. Throw in the kitchen sink and a man named Tuttle.

The legend of Pocahontas and John Smith receives a luminous and essential retelling by maverick filmmaker Terrence Malick. The facts of Virginia's first white settlers, circa 1607, have been told for eons and fortified by Disney's animated films: explorer Smith (Colin Farrell) and the Native American princess (newcomer Q'orianka Kilcher) bond when the two cultures meet, a flashpoint of curiosity and war lapping interchangeably at the shores of the new continent. Malick, who took a twenty year break between his second and third films (Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line), is a master of film poetry; the film washes over you, with minimal dialogue (you see characters speak on camera for less than a quarter of the film). The rest of the words are a stream-of-consciousness narration--a technique Malick has used before but never to such degree, creating a movie you feel more than watch. The film's beauty (shot in Virginia by Emmanuel Lubezki) and production design (by Jack Fisk) seems very organic, and in fact, organic is a great label for the movie as a whole, from the dreadful conditions of early Jamestown (it makes you wonder why Englishman would want to live there) to the luminescent love story. Malick is blessed with a cast that includes Wes Studi, August Schellenberg, Christopher Plummer, and Christian Bale (who, curiously, was also in the Disney production). Fourteen-year-old Kilcher, the soul of the film, is an amazing find, and Farrell, so often tagged as the next big thing, delivers his first exceptional performance since his stunning debut in Tigerland. James Horner provides a fine score, but is overshadowed by a Mozart concerto and a recurring prelude from Wagner's Das Rheingold, a scrumptious weaving of horns fit to fuel the gentle intoxication of this film. Note: the film was initially 150 minutes, and then trimmed to 135 by Malick before the regular theatrical run. It was also the first film shot in 65mm since Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet. --Doug Thomas
Description
In this romantic epic starring Colin Farrell, Christian Bale and beautiful newcomer Q'orianka Kilcher, acclaimed filmmaker Terrence Malick brings to life the classic true tale of Pocahontas and her relationship with adventurer John Smith set during the turbulent beginnings of America.
Customer Reviews:
Loved it, myself......but...........2007-09-11
I give this film 4 stars - for the setting, attention to detail, and some of the acting...But if it weren't for being into history details like that, I'd be giving it one or 2 stars.
The plot does not flow well, as others have pointed out. And there's some historical inaccuracy, mainly with John Smith (Farrell) and Pocahontas's (Kilcher) relationship. A lot has been made of her supposedly saving him in the Indian (excuse me - "native American") village, but if you research it you find its likely a tale that Smith invented years later. Smith was an adventurer and mercenary who had fought in or near Turkey before his Virginia adventure; the point is that he was not a peaceful, innocent-eyed young guy as portrayed in this movie. John Rolfe (Bale) was far more important than he is portrayed here - in fact, the commercial success of the colony is almost exclusively due to him and the tobacco he raised. There is no real reason to think he and Pocahontas were not the real love interest. It just occurred later than this movies allows.
Christopher Plummer does his usual EXCELLENT acting. His Capt Newport is a little known figure in American history today, although now there is a university in Va. named after him.
I thought Kilcher made a wonderful Pocahontas - who else would have made that part better?? Keep in mind Pocahontas was basically a child when the expedition arrived. She made friends with the explorers, then she disappeared for a couple of years only to re-appear in her teens.
The colony is correctly shown as having 'too many chiefs', which is true to history. They brought mostly gentlemen-types on the first voyage, when what they needed were workers and craftsmen.
The Indians were incredibly realistic, as were the weapons and the ships, etc. They are also correctly portrayed as "players" in the ensuing struggle for control of the area, rather than just as innocent "pawns". They had every chance to wipe out the colony in its first 10-15 years, but politics played its part on their side too. This movie reminds me of another favorite in that regard: 1993's "Last of the Mohicans".
Unfortunately, plot clumsiness, slight twisting of history, and a musical score that (maybe) wasn't to a lot of peoples taste (I liked it:) meant that this movie isn't in the class of "Last of the Mohicans" which was a much more powerful drama, especially on the political side...
It was, however, good to see a film about Jamestown versus the far less important but generally better known Mayflower settlement. Jamestown was indeed where today's America started.
The film isn't what it could've been...but I still recommend it anyway.
Touching tale.......2007-09-03
Touching tale of love between John Smith and Pocahantas. Wonderful cinematagraphy, great acting, great sets, costumes and most importantly, great pathos. Very slow moving however (almost as slow as "Elephant"). For most members of the the MTV generation this film will be far too slow.
Love Affair Movie.......2007-08-31
This movie had very little to do with the discovery and making of the Jamestown Fort. The majority was focused of the love affair between Capt. John Smith (Colin Farrell)and Pocahontas. I guess the promo was correct because it did say it was a romantic. Sure wish it focused on the discovery of Jamestown more. I don't recommend this movie.
A Beautiful Film.......2007-08-27
This film left me thinking about it for days after viewing it. Only a quarter of the film is dialogue, and so it is a very visual film, and yet the storytelling is strong. Colin Farrell and Q'orianka Kilcher both play complex roles of lovers. Farrell is genuine yet has personal demons, Kilcher is a young woman experiencing first love. Christian Bale is a true English gentleman, kind and full of understanding. Malick is a superb director, it is one of those rare films in which you feel you're looking through the director's eyes as you're watching the film.
Terrance Malick Masterpiece.......2007-08-15
If you interested in early American history and in the Jamestown settlement this is a lovely film which showcases that era with authenticity. There is little revisionist history in this lyrical drama. It recounts the true story of Pocahontus, the Native American princess and her love of John Smith and her efforts to help the residents of Jamestown. After a deception and her being disowned by her father, Pocahontus becomes a Jamestown resident and marries an Englishman. Some of the movies' most touching scenes involve simply Pocahontus' dialouge with God. Her commentary is so beautiful and real that you feel her gratitude and pure spirit. She never loses herself or forgets her past, she is always present. Later in the film, a trip to England brings her to a strange old world that can't compare with the natural beauty and freedom of her youth. It is the complete opposite of everything she knew and was now cut off from. She learns of Jon Smith in England and sees him one last time. In the end she is happy and content with her husband. The movie ends, however the real history, Pocahontus dies in England, she and Jon Smith were never lovers and to all outward appearance she embraced her new identity and renownced her old life. Despite these minor inconsistencies the storyline adds to the romance and overall beauty of the film. I simply adore this movie.

As the triumphant start of a trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring leaves you begging for more. By necessity, Peter Jackson's ambitious epic compresses J.R.R. Tolkien's classic The Lord of the Rings, but this robust adaptation maintains reverent allegiance to Tolkien's creation, instantly qualifying as one of the greatest fantasy films ever made. At 178 minutes, it's long enough to establish the myriad inhabitants of Middle-earth, the legendary Rings of Power, and the fellowship of hobbits, elves, dwarves, and humans--led by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and the brave hobbit Frodo (Elijah Wood)--who must battle terrifying forces of evil on their perilous journey to destroy the One Ring in the land of Mordor. Superbly paced, the film is both epic and intimate, offering astonishing special effects and production design while emphasizing the emotional intensity of Frodo's adventure. Ending on a perfect note of heroic loyalty and rich anticipation, this wondrous fantasy continues in The Two Towers (2002). --Jeff Shannon

Sets the Bar for Fantasy Movies.......2007-09-10
This movie is everything that fantasy should be. What an experience! This a story that has stood the test of time and that has been brilliantly brought to the screen. Worth watching again and again. Don't rent it, own it.
MST3K Fans Rejoice -- Rifftrax is Here!.......2007-08-09
The greatest fantasy epic of all times is at last a RiffTrax! No, not Crossroads - we already did that. And not A Very Unlucky Leprechaun - which we haven't done yet but are seriously mulling over. We speak of course of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, the thrilling tale of some short guys, some slightly taller hairy guys, some thin, fey, but slightly taller guys, some grungy, somewhat beefier, slightly taller guys, and a frighteningly hairy, older, slightly taller guy with a stick, and their quest to throw something somewhere hot.
Mike Nelson and special guest riffer Kevin Murphy go after the ultimate comedy prize in this very special two-part RiffTrax.
This RiffTrax is only compatible with the Theatrical Release, not the extended edition. It does however, work for both the single side and doubled sided versions of the Theatrical Release.
Viewing Suggestion: This RiffTrax was written and performed with the whole family in mind, so if you are comfortable with your children watching Lord of the Rings, this should be perfectly appropriate for them as well. Skip the endless reruns of The War at Home and treat your whole family to the RiffTrax experience!
"Q: Where Would You Rather Be? A: Anywhere But Here...".......2007-07-20
Follow in "The Lord of the Rings" creator's (J.R.R. Tolkien's) footsteps. Project a malevolent universe. Invent a world and animate it with creatures in conflict. Make the conflict a battle between good and evil, but don't identify clearly the moral value or purpose of either side. In fact, remove morality's essence altogether by eliminating the power of choice for your characters. Emphasize the corruptibility of men. Glamorize the supernatural. Dwell interminably on the preparations for and the wreaking of violence and destruction, on the fragility of hope and happiness. Name the scene of action: Middle-earth. Sound like an environment you'd care to envision? Would you "live" there? If so, fate alone will decide its survival and your own. You can visit this predetermined "paradise" by watching/enduring/suffering Peter Jackson's elaborately filmed adaptation of Tolkien's epic trilogy, which begins with "The Fellowship of the Ring."
I hold it is true that what is not worth contemplating in life is not worth contemplating in art. For its dismaying lack of meaningful moral definition, its pervasive pictorial ugliness, the quantity of its scenes of mind-numbing graphic violence, and its minimizing of the value of happiness, "The Lord of the Rings" films--including this one--ought to be shunned and damned.
A bad adaptation of a great book.......2007-07-10
Let me begin by saying that I have been a Tolkien fan since I was in Jr. High School oh so many years ago. I, along with the rest of the known universe, eagerly awaited the film release of Tolkien's massive epic. To say I was disappointed in the end result is putting it mildly.
I suppose I have only myself to blame. After all, I should have known the cause was lost the instant I learned Peter Jackson was going to direct the trilogy. With all due respect to Mr. Jackson, he does not seem like the kind of person who could even comprehend, let alone translate on to film, the theology and complex allegory that are the hallmarks of the LoTR. After all, anyone who knows the first thing about Tolkien knows that he was a devout Roman Catholic of the pre-Vatican II variety and that his religious views profoundly influenced his writing.
My guess is that Peter Jackson, who would probably make a great Dungeon Master, knows little of and could care less about Roman Catholicism no matter what brand you are talking about. Hence, instead of timeless epic we are stuck with what amounts to warmed over Dungeon and Dragons that is the all too predictable result of his efforts.
Other reviewers have already done an excellent job of cataloging this film's (and the entire trilogy's) many glaring shortcomings so I will not regurgitate them here. What I will say is this. His worst offense in my opinion is not even the barely thought thru script, terrible casting (Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortenson, Cate Blanchett) and huge chunks of the book that were either left out (Barrow Downs, Tom Bombadil, Shelob) or mutilated beyond recognition (Helm's Deep, The Ents, Faramir). His greatest sin is that he manages to take one of the most interesting and exciting stories ever written and make it dull and boring. That for me is enough to warn any potentinal customers away from purchasing this product.
The plain fact of the matter is that the LoTR, because of its structure and length, simply does not lend itself to being made as a feature film. My advice to anyone looking to discover the great treasure of Tolkien's Middle Earth is to purchase the books and read them. You can't do any better than that.
Best Lord of the Rings Movie ever!.......2007-07-06
This version of the Lord of the Rings as a movie is the best ever made.
Okay some "changes" were necessary to make it a commercial successful movie, such as reducing "responsibilities" for events to a minimum (result: somebody was held responsible for things in the movie, where somebody else was responsible in the book), Some characters and events (especially the first third) are just missing (to make the movie not too long and difficult for NON-Book Readers). They did not mention some locations and events from the first book and gave some information, which were not available until book 2 or 3.
Some Characters for Book 2-3 got also a role in book 1 (movie 1) to substitute characters from the original book (to keep it simple). In addition, some dialogs did never take place, but that is understandable, if you want to tell the story in a movie.
Nevertheless, they had to sacrifice something to make a good movie to tell Tolkien's story with real characters.
It is a fantasy world. You cannot expect that somebody spend 100+ million dollars, to make a 1-1 version of a book. A 1-1 version would require making 3 movies with 3-5 hour length. In addition, after part 1 would nobody (who did NOT read the book) go to watch part 2. Final Comment: Read the books! Moreover, if you do not read books, this movie version is the best you can get right now.

Great visuals & explanation.......2007-08-17
I have seen a lot of DVD's about Chakras and this is by far the best explanation I have seen. It is accompanied by amazing visual effects and perfectly matched music. I highly recommend it.
Great to see this information in the mainstream........2007-08-03
Destiny Diary 2008: New Moon Planner
It's so exciting to see information like this in such a visual format. Many will benefit from this product.
Visual feast of visionary Art.......2007-07-18
The Illuminated Chakras - A Visionary Voyage into Your Inner World is a truly splendid visual and narrative guide into the esoteric subject of the Chakras.
The superb Computer graphics and visionary art are exceptionally well done, it is a true delight to watch what unfolds before ones eyes as the viewer is lulled into a world of energy and knowledge only those previously initiated into the art of Yoga had prior access to.
The narrative is a comprehensive guide to understanding the Chakras, their purpose and effect.
The sound effects and background music are hypnotically powerful adding dramatic purpose to the narrative and visual feast unfolding before the viewer.
This DVD is only 25 minutes long but don't be putoff by its short duration, it is a powerful video well worth getting.
I've never before seen anything quite like this before, it hits the spot and puts you in a trance of relaxed learning, those 25mins are truly splendid and powerful!
You gain a full understanding of the chakras and how they work, as well as the effects of the planetary and universal energies acting and working in harmony with the body and everything/everyone around you.
I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Not the best.......2007-07-15
Anodea Judith reads prose in a flat toneless voice. The graphics are wonderful, but as for the Kundalini experience or a great colour meditation, I think it lacks. Why? The colour of the chakras is only strong and consistent in two of the chakras (the solar plexus and its yellow graphic images, and the throat with its blue graphics). The rest of the chakras are depicted in a whirl of various colours that take away from the immersion in colour that a good open eyed colour meditation can provide. Shirley Mclaine's (circa 1990) open eyed colour meditation comes to mind as a great example with a mind altering after effect.
This DVD seems to be more of a basic introduction to the chakras than a useful tool to use repeatedly.
DOUBLES as a MUSIC VIDEO.......2007-07-12
Don't be put off by the word "CHAKRA."
YOU do NOT have to be a BELIEVER in CHAKRAS or NEW AGE
SPIRITUALITY in order to ENJOY this DVD!
This DVD easily doubles as a long form Music-Video for non-believers.
The program is divided into 7 different chapters of computer animation,
each intending to visually represent the 7 Chakras of the body.
The imagery is vivid and colorful and often hypnotic.
Each chapter is accompanied by a soundtrack of new-age electronica music.
The style is very remenicent of ENIGMA and DEEP FOREST. Sometimes soft
and soothing, sometimes rythmic and somewhat dancable.
Each chapter is also accompanied by a female voice reciting a guided
meditation for each Chakra. You can choose to hear the narration in
several different languages. Those who are put off by New Age dogma
can easily enjoy the music and visuals with French or Italian narration.
OR you can TURN the narration OFF and simply enjoy the DVD
as a long-form music video of computer animation. This would be
perfect to have playing on TV during a party or social-gathering.
I sometimes have it playing on TV while I read or clean the house.
I find the versatility of this DVD's format very appealing.
It can be used for Meditation or simply enjoyed as Art.
Actual belief in Chakras or New Age philosophy is not required.
Just watch, listen and enjoy.

It was one of the first signs of the modern era of baseball when New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner took advantage of new free-agency rules to restock his team. One of his acquisitions, outfielder Reggie Jackson, proved himself worthy of his self-label as "the straw that stirs the drink" by powering a record five home runs in the 1977 World Series, breaking a 15-year Yankee championship drought and branding him "Mr. October." The 1977 New York Yankees Collector's Edition set has all six games against the Los Angeles Dodgers, plus the clinching fifth game of the ALCS against the Kansas City Royals (featuring a late Yankee comeback and a brawl between third basemen Graig Nettles and George Brett). Also included are new interviews with a number of the players, including Reggie Jackson, Willie Randolph, Ron Guidry, Lou Piniella, Chris Chambliss, Mickey Rivers, Roy White, Dusty Baker, and Burt Hooton, and some footage of the memorable mid-season squabble between Jackson and manager Billy Martin, plus SleeveStats that print the box score, inning-by-inning summaries, and trivia on each DVD Thinpak case. As a time capsule, it's interesting to watch the players in action--not only future Hall of Famer Jackson (remember how in his three-homer effort in the clinching game, he actually started the Yankees comeback with a base on balls?), pre-Cy Young winner Guidry, and future managers Randolph, Piniella, and Baker. It's also instructive to watch a different era of the game, one that saw Yankees closer Sparky Lyle pitch 3-2/3 innnings for the game 1 win, and umpires who would watch pitches bounce in the dirt without batting an eye, rather than obsessively replacing anything with a hint of a scuff. And even though their team lost, longtime Dodger fans will enjoy watching the squad that boasted four 30-homer hitters, future Hall of Famer Don Sutton, and the record-setting infield of Garvey, Lopes, Russell, and Cey. --David Horiuchi

Just As I Remember It.......2007-09-10
Yes it contains some flaws such as a few video tape imperfections, but overall it's a window into the past for an exciting World Series. The statistical information for each DVD case is well formatted and informative. Each game is presented as it aired and the bonus fifth and deciding game of the American League Championship Series is a nice addition.
I suspect most sports fans will enjoy this presentation.
Much better than expected.......2007-08-27
After reading some of the reviews here I was worried about the quality of the video on these DVDs. After seeing some in-game footage of the '77 Series on The Bronx Is Burning series on ESPN I was even more concerned. However, with the exception of some picture cropping (it's not quite fullscreen, not quite widescreen) the image is actually pretty good for a 30 year old taping. Worth the money if you're a Yankee fan.
Lost one customer.......2007-08-26
I would like to thank the other reviewers for pointing out that the producers of this set have ruined the video by reformatting it for widescreen televisions. You saved me $40. I'm not a die-hard Yankee fan, so I don't have to have this set no matter how poorly done it is. Nor do I care about the "Bronx is burning" nonsense. That's for the bleeding hearts at ESPN to obsess over. I do remember that the 1977 season and World Series as being very entertaining (as was the 1978 season and series), so I probably would have bought the set if it was satisfactorily done. But I'm not so in love with the Yankees of that era that I will throw hard earned money away on a set that is spoiled by having the top and bottom of the picture amputated. If the powers that be at A&E Home Video are listening, just give us the broadcasts without your editorial tampering.
I remember what television sports coverage was like in the 1970's. It doesn't bother me that it isn't like today's coverage, with all sorts of irrelevant data crawling by on the bottom of the screen like a stock ticker (as is done at financial networks like Bloomberg's). These games should have been presented as is. They weren't high definition, and shouldn't be made into a pale imitation of hi-def.
Listening to Howard Cosell is bad enough. Add to that the truncation of the video and you have a set that is not worth buying.
Forced Widescreen?.......2007-06-17
I've now watched all seven games in this set and I really enjoyed the trip down memory lane. The video quality is acceptable for something 30 years old, and the sound is fine with the exception of a 1 minute gap in the bottom of the fifth of Game 1. Having said that, the fools who produced this set formatted it for widescreen TVs by chopping off the top and bottom of the original 4X3 broadcast. Yeah, it fits a 16X9 TV nicely, but the players have no feet, you can't read the bottom line of the graphics, and you feel like you are watching the game through a tunnel. Why would they do something so stupid when most 16X9 TVs and/or DVD players allow you to adjust the aspect ratio yourself - if you choose to do so???
I really like these old broadcasts on ABC because the picture is pure baseball without all of the worthless information FOX crams on the top of the screen on the more recent sets. But please, if the game wasn't recorded in widescreen don't force it by cutting the original picture!
For those who remember and those who will never forget..........2007-06-04
"Reggie! Reggie! Reggie!"
Those who love baseball or even just like it often have that one era that absolutely defined the game for them; for me, it was, and always will be the 1977 New York Yankees - the time of Thurman Munson (R.I.P.), Bucky Dent, Lou Piniella, Graig Nettles, Billy Martin and my all-time favortie baseball hero (to this day), REGGIE JACKSON!!!
From my perspective and my memories, I recall that in 1977, the eyes of the world seem to momentarily focus on New York City - some crazy mountain climber (can't remember his name) decided to scale one of the twin towers of the World Trade Center and was fined $1.10 for all 110 stories of the building, the Son of Sam serial killer was still at large, NYC nearly tore itself apart during the summer blackout, disco and Studio 54 ruled the night and, oh yeah, Jackson's three (3) legendary home runs during Game 6 of the World Series against the L.A. Dodgers. They would repeat their World Series victory against the Dodgers once again a year later in 1978.
Despite the poor picture quality at time (these TV telecasts are 30 years-old; what more can you expect?), I was in awe of watching my classic baseball heroes take the field again. I had also completely forgotten that when Game 6 ended and the Yankess won it, Reggie had to literally run for his life off of the field in order to avoid being mauled by the joyous fans who swarmed the field.
I'll always remember and I'll never forget!
