This quietly daffy comedy should have been an indie hit, but ended up ignored by audiences. Too bad; it's a wonderfully sustained caper movie about friends whose career choice is all wrong. Low-key Anthony (Luke Wilson) and high-strung Dignan (Owen C. Wilson--the two actors are brothers) are brought into a life of crime by Dignan's ambition to be a small-time thief. After a few amusingly laid-back trial burglaries, they (and a third buddy) find themselves over their heads when they hook up with an experienced crime boss (James Caan). Because this movie is so relentlessly deadpan, you really have to be dialed in to its brand of humor--but once there, Bottle Rocket shoots off plenty of sparks. Above all, Owen Wilson's portrayal of Dignan is a terrifically original comic creation; Dignan is so sincerely focused on his goals that he can't see how completely absurd his ideas are. Owen Wilson, who went on to supply similarly knuckle-headed performances in Armageddon and Permanent Midnight, wrote the screenplay with director Wes Anderson. --Robert Horton

"you're gonna see a side of Dignan that you haven't seen before. A sick, sadistic side...".......2007-09-11
"Bottle Rocket (1996), the first feature by Wes Anderson has become a cult favorite, and made the names of Anderson and Wilson's (three brothers, Owen, Luke, and Andrew acted in the picture, and Owen, the self-proclaimed troublemaker co-wrote the script with Anderson) popular, and their fans waiting for more. BR is an offbeat crime/comedy about three friends, Dignan (Owen), Anthony (Luke), and Bob (Robert Musgrave) who tried to pursue the career of the professional criminals. If ever three screw-up characters were less suited for becoming tough guys, thieves or bank robbers, I am yet to see them on the screen. Of all three, Dignan takes the cake - his brazenness, ineptitude, clumsiness and lack of any sense of reality in the combination with the true belief that he was born to become a "made man" (or something like that) and that the local "godfather" Mr. Henry (James Caan in a very funny cameo) would take him and his friends seriously are absolutely adorable. Andrew Wilson, the oldest of three brothers has a small role as Bob's obnoxious older brother. I personally don't think that "Bottle Rocket" is a masterpiece and the best movie of that year but it certainly has got some very funny moments, especially in the beginning (Dignan helps Anthony to run from a mental hospital and soon they pull a job of robbing the local book store; Dignan interviews Bob for a position of a runaway driver) and in the end when three friends are sent by Mr. Henry to the biggest (and the most hilarious) heist that would be the apotheosis of their careers. Owen Wilson's Dignan is a reason enough to see the movie - so hilariously deadly serious about his absurd plans, schemes, and ideas he is.
Early Wes Anderson Is Still Good Wes Anderson.......2007-08-27
Wes Anderson is probably one of my favorite quirky directors. With films such as The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Rushmore in his repertoire, I feel the "quirky" title to be appropriate. Best known for Rushmore (1998), Anderson's films have a unique edge to them. Definitely not in-your-face comedy, their impact is much dryer and subtler (I remember the nude gal in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou just being there because some nudity was needed. And I remember Bill Murray driving back and forth over his enemy's bicycle in Rushmore then placing it back in its bike rack and how I knew this would influence the battle yet-to-come).
I'd never heard of BOTTLE ROCKET until somebody pointed it out to me. Having enjoyed Rushmore tremendously, it came highly recommended. And after watching it, I can see why.
This is early Anderson, and a film that helped launch his inimitable movie style. Released in 1996 and starring the newly found Wilson brothers (Luke and Owen), it goes to show that Anderson knew how to pick a good script and good actors to round out a chuckle-fest.
Luke Wilson (My Super Ex-Girlfriend) is no stranger to Anderson films now, having been given the lead role here and later strong supporting roles in The Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore, Luke can celebrate his strong Anderson film trifecta and proudly point back to his roots in this film. Brother Owen (Cars) is one up on Luke in that he has performed in all of those, plus The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
Mental health issues abound for Anthony (Luke Wilson) and his buddy Dignan (Owen). In fact, Anthony has just been released from a voluntary psychiatric facility where he was resting after a nervous breakdown. Waiting for him in the bushes (literally) is Dignan, who believes Anthony is escaping from the psych ward instead via his own free will.
The two quickly go back to their old ways. They decide to return to a life of petty thieving and even do dry-runs by "robbing" Anthony's family's home in order to see if they still have their robbing edge. They also decide to take on the strangest heists (from meat packing plants to bookstores). Since neither of them own a car, though, they have to get a driver and they pick Bob Mapplethorpe (Robert Musgrave) simply because ...well ...he has a car. Their first felony occurs at the aforementioned bookstore and they make quick their getaway, leaving town and scurrying across the state. They end up at a motel in the middle of nowheresville and decide to hold up. But the trio quickly turns sour when a pretty young hotel maid name Inez (Lumi Cavazos) catches Anthony's eye. Speaking no English, the Central American goddess fails to realize how messed up yet in love Anthony is with her (partly due to the language barrier and partly do to Anthony's fumbling ways).
Word eventually comes to Bob (the driver) that a family member is in trouble and he has to return to town. Since he has the only car, Anthony and (more importantly) Dignan, flip out, telling him he can't leave. But he does and leaves Anthony and Dignan stranded at the hotel (which is fine with the love-struck Anthony). But Dignan wants to get out of there, so he devises a plan to steal a car and return to their lives of thievery. Not wanting to leave without his newfound love interest, Anthony tries to convince Inez to come with them. A misunderstanding ensues and he and Dignan are back on their debauched road. Eventually they take on a robbery at a meat packing plant and it goes horribly. Risking everything, eventually a choice has to be made about who stays behind -- and takes the risk of capture -- and who goes free.
It is the strange and quirky (there's that word again) that drives this film. Owen Wilson's character (Dignan) is obviously an extreme case of an excessive-compulsive. He plans out items to the nth degree, ensuring that everything is okay decades later. Anthony (Luke) struggles to regain some sense of normalcy in his life but keeps getting dragged back down by his bond with Dignan while being tugged the other direction by Inez.
In the end, all turns out bizarrely well. Dignan ends up where he belongs, Owen gets what he needs, and even Inez finds what she's looking for.
Certainly one of the less known Anderson films, this one still comes highly recommended, just not as highly as his more recent works.
Better every time........2007-06-27
I love Owen and Luke. Every time I watch this movie I enjoy it more and more. I am so glad that I was able to find it.
contained crazyness.......2007-04-15
Definit own if you have any luke or owen wilson films. Two middle class guys with a crazy outlook on life - that need something to do. luke commits himself to a mental hospital - at like 20 because he needs a break from life . . . then him and his friends rob a book store because they didnt want to live a normal life and wanted to gain street credit with this stunt - to get in this gang later - and make crime money. it all gets screwed up - check out punk drunk love ..

Great Indie film!.......2007-04-15
This film is probably starting to make its way to mainstream with the commercial success of the Wilson brothers, Luke and Owen.
This film is perhaps one of the best independent films I have ever seen. Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson (who co-wrote with Owen W. and directed the film) paired on several films of less-than-popular stature. All of them are quirky at worst and extremely entertaining at best. As a note, I would recommend all of them as spectacular, with slight hesitation on "The Royal Tannenbaums".
This film in particular was a showcase of how good writing can make up for subpar acting. The actors in this movie were not great, but the story, the words, they were fantastic. Basically, a guy gets bored with life and wants some adventure and he drags his buddies along as he attempts to become a criminal. Things don't go as planned, but the results are very funny.
I am not a huge fan of big hollywood type films, so I have lost interest in most of the films of the Wilson brothers, but this one shows brilliance when they were unknown.
A very intelligent, funny film. It is not a slapstick comedy, so don't rent it if you are expecting "Tommy Boy" or "Happy Gilmore". If you like quirky comedies, comedies that make you think, in the vein of "Waiting for Guffman", "Drop Dead Gorgeous", "A Mighty Wind" or "Rushmore", then this is a perfect fit for you; buy it. If you want a 3 Stooges type comedy, you can look elsewhere; this one is more low key.

First born in the pages of The New Yorker, then translated into a hit Rodgers and Hart Broadway musical, the title character of Pal Joey had undergone quite a transformation by the time he hit the movies in 1957. He was a singer, rather than a dancer, but more importantly he'd had his rough edges sweetly softened; the callous heel dreamed up by novelist John O'Hara was more of a naughty scamp in the film version. However, Pal Joey remains delightfully watchable for two very good reasons: a terrific song score and a surplus of glittering star power. Frank Sinatra, at the zenith of his cocky, world-on-a-string popularity, glides through the film with breezy nonchalance, romancing showgirl Kim Novak (Columbia Pictures' new sex symbol) and wealthy widow Rita Hayworth (Columbia Pictures' former sex symbol). The film also benefits from location shooting in San Francisco, caught in the moonlight-and-supper-club glow of the late '50s. Sinatra does beautifully with the Rodgers and Hart classics "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" and "I Could Write a Book," and his performance of "The Lady Is a Tramp" (evocatively shot by director George Sidney) is flat-out genius. Sinatra's ease with hep-cat lingo nearly outdoes Bing Crosby at his best, and included in the DVD is a trailer in which Sinatra instructs the audience in "Joey's Jargon," a collection of hip slang words such as "gasser" and "mouse." If not one of Sinatra's very best movies, Pal Joey is nevertheless a classy vehicle that fits like a glove. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
Dated? Of course, it's over 50 years old!.......2007-09-09
Having long been familiar with both theatrical and soundtrack recordings of "Pal Joey" I felt I was past due to view the movie. First and foremost pointing out that the film is dated would be a totally unwarranted and unjustified point. This film holds up well even after 50+ years. Some feel that Gene Kelly should have reprised his Broadway role in the movie but had Sinatra not been the force that he was it is highly likely that the movie itself would have never been made. Production values are maybe a bit below what I would have expected for a feature musical of the period but certainly there is nothing here to complain about. Sinatra is in fine voice with maybe the definative reading of "Lady is a Tramp", Hayworth for me was perfect, at least until the dream sequence just prior to the end of the film and Novak might have slighly unplayed her role but was quite beautiful and an excellent choice for the role. What others have failed to point out is that neither Hayworth nor Novak did their own singing. Jo Anne Greer was the wonderful singer of "ZIP" & "Bewitched" both credited to Hayworth's character while Judy Erwin handled Novak's vocals including "My Funny Valentine". (Trivia note: Rita Hayworth's "Put the Blame on Mame" from the movie "Glida" was actually song by Anita Ellis.) My only real complaint with the film was the dream sequence near the film's end. This sequence looks cheap in technique and quite honestly doesn't advance the story as I think was intended. All in all it's a very pleasant couple of hours with music most interested in this title will remember and a true star turn for all three of the headliners.
Star studded movie; adaptation of a great musical.......2007-09-06
This is a less than successful movie version of a hit 1940 Broadway musical Pal Joey, written by John O'Hara, with music and lyrics by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. The musical is modified in several ways. Of the original 14 Rodgers and Hart songs, 8 remained with the movie. Sinatra sings classics such as; "I Didn't Know What Time It was" and "I Could Write a Book," and "The Lady Is a Tramp;" and "My Funny Valentine" by Linda English is perhaps the best parts of the movie.
The story is about a singer named Joey Evans (Frank Sinatra), known for his womanizing ways is an out of work singer looking for a job in San Francisco. He meets a chorus girl named Linda English (Kim Novak), slowly, but steadily their friendship blossoms into love and romance. In the meantime, he develops a relationship with a wealthy widow named Vera Simpson (Rita Hayworth) to seek her help to finance his dream, "Chez Joey", a night club of his own. When the new night club is about to open, Vera finds about Joey and Linda, and she asks Joey to fire Linda, and he refuses, and Vera withdraws support for the night club. Joey and Vera use each other to the bitter end, ultimately Vera gives in, and Joey wins not only the club but also his prize, Linda. The movie has somewhat unrealistic ending; except for the fine performance of Frank Sinatra, his costars Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak are not very impressive.

Great Sinatra vehicle!.......2007-09-02
I remember really enjoying this movie in my youth and I hadn't seen it since I saw it in the theater and it didn't disappoint. Great songs and a real nice print. I recommend it if you are a Sinatra fan. Bob S.
Pal Joey.......2007-08-23
Of course the movie is fine, that why I ordered it.
Service from Amazon was great as usuall
Great Rita Hayworth.......2007-06-05
Rita Hayworth is the only reason for watching this film, and Kim Novak is good. The rest is not good..the script of the original Pal Joey has been completely re-written to accomodate Sinatra, and this means the thinnest of plots, the transposition of songs, elimination of numbers that make him look bad, and the suits and pants with football padding to disguise thinness and age.
This was the musical Sinatra wanted; he was sure he could carry a film, certainly a musical film. He had seen M Brando take the lead in Guys and Dolls, and he reacted negatively toward Barndo all through the shoot of Guys and Dolls. Thank God Brando secured that lead!
Sinatra's voice in Pal Joey is very bad, his style of acting is no style at all, and his acting, even on its one note foundation, is excruciating. He needed Gene Kelly and others to fill in when he made MGM musicals; he was never a star, and Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak eclipse him in every scene, proving that point.
Too bad, because this was a very good show, on Broadway, with Gene Kelly, who should have done this picture, or Marlon Brando, certainly Brando.
See this for Rita and her number, Zipped, and forget the rest.
See also, Kim, sing (dubbing)My Funny Valentine, and how it gets ruined as you watch Sinatra's reactions to it.

not so good.......2006-09-24
This is a movie for the inexperienced. It's got a sweetness to it, but is so elementary that I couldn't watch it through to the end. The characters are a little over-done, makeup, clothes, acting. Not deep, not intelligent, not meaningful. Just a film to take up a little boredom-time.
Kentucky Rain keeps pouring down.....and it feels good!.......2002-07-10
Like the 1981 Bill Murray comedy Stripes, Nice Guys Sleep Alone was also filmed here in Louisville, Kentucky. And like that film, Nice Guys Sleep Alone is an excellent, hilarious, and entertaining film to watch. Not only that, it has a serious message when it comes to meeting the right person, and how the dating scene is in the 21st Century. Sean O'Bryan, the ever lovely Morgan Fairchild, Will Sanderson, Dorothy Grossman, and all the actors do a remarkable job with the material they are given. Most of all, Stu Pollard (a native Louisvillian)does an excellent job in directing the film. His shots of Louisville and the other parts of Kentucky Horse Country (particularly the horse farm that his family owns)are very crisp, sharp, scintillating, and very beautiful. If not fresh.
If you enjoy excellent independent films, let alone the state of Kentucky and its tradition of horse racing, be sure to check out this film. It's worth watching. It's also on my own top 100 best movie list.
Trivia note - Dorothy Grossman worked with The Kentucky Shakespeare Festival for two years. I had the honor and the privilege of working with her on stage.
A fun movie about a sad truth: nice guys do sleep alone........2002-04-26
A recent survey found that women who are dating -- and having sex -- casually tend to be attracted to men who like to party and are often somewhat irresponsible, whereas women looking for a serious relationship and/or marriage prefer "nice guys" with jobs and a sense of responsibility. Consequently, although nice guys are sought out as steady boyfriends or husbands, they sleep alone at the end of casual dates far more often than do their party animal peers. This fact is the premise of this movie. Carter (Sean O'Bryan) is a nice guy who buys his dates flowers and takes them to dinner at good restaurants. Consequently his dates usually send him home after the first date with the suggestion: "Let's just be friends." Then he meets Maggie to whom he is seriously attracted (Sybil Temchen) and who is ready for a relationship with a nice guy. Unfortunately, Carter allows a buddy to convince him that he will do better with Maggie if he abandons his nice guy persona. So for once Carter, throws away the flowers he has bought, arrives at Maggie's house a half hour late, and takes her to a hamburger joint for dinner. Naturally Maggie is angry and disappointed that she has apparently misjudged Carter and doesn't even allow him to walk her to her door. The one time Carter was going to score with a woman who is looking for a nice guy, he strikes himself out. However, since this is a fun movie, Carter and Maggie eventually do get together and begin the meaningful -- and, presumably, intimate -- relationship they both are seeking.
The foregoing may leave you disinterested in this film, but I hope not -- because this low-budget little gem of a movie does a beautiful job of exploring and exposing the joys and pitfalls of the dating game while being a fun movie throughout.
The perfect romantic comedy.......2001-09-23
I write romantic comedy novels, so I'm always on the lookout for a good romanctic comedy movie. I'm from Kentucky originally, so Nice Guys Sleep Alone caught my eye. What a great film! My husband (he's from Louisville, the town where the movie is set) and I laughed and laughed. Don't miss it!
Lots of Laughs.......2001-08-07
I first caught this movie while flipping channels. It was being shown on HBO. I wasn't really expecting much but, my husband and I watched the movie through. There were lots of great laughs. While it may of been low budget, it was very well written. It was a lot of fun to watch. :)

Customer Reviews:
Lots of style, not much substance.......2005-12-19
This is an extremely downbeat tale of a loser who should know better. Nigel, an English petty criminal on the lam from his native country and now living in Copenhagen, hooks up with some Danish gangsters to make quick cash. Living with his second wife, Maria (also Danish), he meets a hooker in the employ of the Danish gangsters and almost immediately has his way with her. This is shown in lurid sex scenes.
Nigel is shown as really not stupid at all, at least mentally, but streetwise he's a total loser. Is it possible that somebody with real brains can do so many stupid things? Sure, this film says, that happens all the time. OK, that's relatively credible. But the four or five deaths that take place are awful pointless deaths and while there is a lot of style on display here, the film doesn't do much to counterbalance the tedium of nothing but gloom. There's nothing wrong with a noir film, which is really what this is. But the noir atmosphere should be in place with sharp creative writing and plotting.
The writing and plotting here is not terrible, but it's not that great either. This is really not a bad film, but it suffers from a relatively standard plotline, even though downbeat to the max, and also from a host of stereotypical characters and situations, not to mention some pedestrian acting, in spots. The lead actor playing Nigel does a relatively good job, but his wife and the gangster chief, known only as the President, can't seem to find their acting chops, nor can the President's henchmen.
The lighting is exceptional, and the cinematography/camera angles are actually pretty good. But another sore spot is the presence of Jimmie, the philosophy-spouting dope dealer who just can't shut up; whenever he gets going, he rambles on and on and on about the universe and a whole lot of psychobabble that drags the film pretty noticeably.
This is not the worst film I've seen. But it needed some greater depth of characterization. We know Nigel is desperate, but we never actually feel that. After all, he is managing to rent an apartment and put some food on the table. He has an ex-wife who he calls, mostly to talk to his son, but it's unclear whether he feels anything for her or not. There is a lot of emotional muddle here, which it feels like the filmmaker, David Noel Bourke, wants to "clear up" by having Nigel and the hooker, Tanya, engage in the aforementioned hot sex.
One suicide and a few murders provide the gloom and doom, and there's a dismemberment thrown in for good measure as well. Pretty depressing.
Not one of my favorites.
Dark, inventive European thriller - loved it!.......2005-11-23
A looney journey into the mind of mad deluded man, Nigel is the ultimate anti-hero if I ever saw one!
It all starts when crazy Nigel befriends with the lowest, darkest and meanest people ever to come out of Copenhagen when he arrives from England, that's a clever start, Mr Nigel! Through torture by spoons & nails, weird psychedelic sex, violence by can of baked beans, suicide, heroine abuse, powertools, unwanted pregnancies to murder... with a few wild but entertaining philosophical diversions along the way...nothing goes right in poor Nigels new life... he feebly attempts to dig himself out of trouble only the hole gets deeper til it engulfs him - and whooah! what an unpredictable blast of an ending!
Shot, composed and edited very stylistically for a budget of almost nothing it seems (looking at the DVD extras and commentary anyway), this is a low budget atmospheric, breath-taking movie that I can imagine will likely to provoke equally aswell as enlighten others with its very unique style.
Overall, intelligent, quirky and darkly humorous in a twisted way, of course, I loved it.
A recommendend DVD experience!

Description
A brilliant ensemble cast tests the limits of love, malice and madness in this gripping psychological thriller about getting even with a vengeance! Emotionally scarred by years of her tyrannical father's (Burt Young) mental cruelty and her ineffectual mother's (Lauren Hutton) weakness, Lily (Laurel Holloman) seems destined to relive old patterns of abuse when she falls passionately in love with Tim (Andy Davoli), a seductive schemer who misses no opportunity to humiliate her. Even her best friend Kilo (Rachel Robinson) is powerless to help Lily see Tim for the scumbag he is. But one night, when her boyfriend's brutality goes too far, Lily's brittle facade of "love" is shattered, and she vows to exact the ultimate revenge against the two men who have made her life a living hell.

Trite.......2006-07-28
It sounded interesting. A women seeks revenge on an abusive boyfriend. But I only liked the last 20 or 30 minutes when she was giving him and her mean father their just dues. Why? Because the plot was weak and the acting wasn't very good. Thankfully, it wasn't too long.
Good Therapy..........2004-01-23
The first time I saw this DVD, I saw myself in it. It has helped me to recognize myself in the Loser Love situation. I could have written the story myself. I would recommend this for sexually abused women in any relationship. It was shocking, but woke me up to the knowdledge that I wasn't the only gullible
person out there. My 13 year marriage was like that. Trying to please every way and still end up divorcing. Should have done it 2 weeks after I married him.
The reason that I give it a 3 is because of the acting, though good, was not super. It did get the point across.

A good piece of work.......2003-12-01
Losers lounge is a film noir style murder mystery . This film is set in 1948 in the northern Indiana area . The film has a great plot and the acting was remarkable . I have watched this film several times and I am still not tired of it , which is not the norm for me . Some of the way this film was shot , reminds me of a Casablanca type film , with less of the romance and more of the darker side of humanity . A lot of issues from incest to drug abuse , are displayed in the film .
The lead actors really poured themselves into there characters . Even the supporting actors really added major flavor to the film . This film has the sex , violence , and suspense so many love to see . Also the music was smoothly put in to add to certain moods during the film .
I only gave it 3 stars because I think they could have done more with the background , props etc . Also there were a few dry spots where too much time was spent just telling the story . Maybe the actors should have found a better way of presenting the story , or maybe someone should have used a different way of getting the information across to the audience . Other than that , good movie .I think I will go watch it again .
