Description
Extremist groups waged a campaign of death threats, arson and riots to stop the production of this controversial film, but director Deepa Mehta would not be silenced. Set against Gandhi's rise to power, Water tells the profoundly moving story of Chuyia, an Indian girl married and widowed at eight years old, who is sent away to a home where Hindu widows must live in penitence. Chuyia's feisty presence deeply affects the other residents, forcing each to confront their faith and society's prejudices.

Water.......2007-07-30
wonderful movie....informative....earthy.....great movie....a wonderful look at life in India from a perspective westerners don't often see.....plus the director is masterful in the telling and delivery of this, I'm sure, politically and spiritually sensitive subject in some of the remoter areas of India
Excellent movie.......2007-07-12
This is a wonderful movie. The acting is powerful, and the directing skillful. Even though it is in subtitles it completely holds one's interest. It is one of the best movies I've seen in the last few years.
An irritating film to watch.......2007-06-10
I realize that this is rather shallow, but I honestly had trouble enjoying this movie as a result of how poorly done the subtitles were. Not only is the default language setting of the DVD set to Hindi, but then even when you do get the subtitles turned on, they turn out to be barely readable and flash on the screen for a second at best. What good is beautiful imagery if you can't understand whats going on?
Beautifully done.......2007-06-04
A beautifully told story. I enjoyed pretty much every aspect of this movie: The cinematography was beautiful, the dialog was entertaining and poignant, the symbolism was clever, and the message was powerful.
Water Review.......2007-05-13
WATER is one of those movies you will not regret seeing or owning. It is a powerful, emotion wringing film that explores the fate of young Indian widows and forms the third in the trilogy - EARTH, FIRE & WATER.
Together, they explore India's social and political history through the individual stories of the protanganists to form a body of work that deserves a wider audience than just the foreign film section of the DVD library.

"Well, how's it feel to be courtin' the prettiest youngin' in the community?".......2006-05-11
According to the `edjumacational' feature Child Bride (1938), there were approximately four main activities to involve yourself in if'n you were a middle aged male resident of Thunderhead Mountain, and they were (in no particular order) making moonshine, drinking moonshine, fighting, and courting underage girls, none of which holds any particular appeal to me, but hey, to each his own. Directed by Harry Revier (Son of Tarzan, The Lost City), the film stars, in her silver screen debut, Shirley Mills, who would later appear in the classic John Ford/Henry Fonda feature The Grapes of Wrath (1940) in the role of Ruthie Joad. Also appearing is Bob Bollinger, in his only feature (no surprise there), Warner Richmond (Huckleberry Finn, The Lost Jungle), and Don Barrett aka Angelo Rossitto (Freaks, The Corpse Vanishes), whom most may remember as the diminutive half of the entity known as Masterblaster from the film Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985).
Shirley Mills plays Jennie Colton, a young, sweet, baby faced, barefoot girl who looks all of about twelve and wears tattered dresses about two sizes too small. Jennie lives with her parents Ira and Flora on Thunderhead Mountain, where her father, in a partnership with a nasty individual named Jake Bolby, runs a hooch mill. Jennie attends classes with her best friend Freddie (Bollinger), both of whom are sweet on each other, in a one room school house with pigeons in the rafters. As I said, Jennie's a good-natured girl (and smart, too), but she's also kind of a nag, not to mention a snitch, especially when it comes to Freddie and his school work (Freddie thinks it's a bunch of hooey). Jennie's teacher, a native of the area who went away to get an education and has since returned, bristles at the common local practice of older men marrying underage girls, and when she's not teaching she's trying to rally the women in the community against such unions (in vain, I might add), which only serves to anger up the men folk. In an effort to put an end to her meddling ways, the men, with Jake as the ringleader, hold a tar and feather party, with the teacher as the guest of honor, but Ira manages to put a stop to things before they get too far. I should also mention Jake was recently forced out of his joint moonshine venture by Ira due to Jake's penchant for abusing the employees, particularly a dwarf named Angelo (Rossitto) and a simpleton named Happy. Jake, who's had his eye (both of them, to be specific) on Jennie for awhile, plots his revenge, and circumstances eventually lead up to him strong arming the Coltons into giving consent for Jennie to be his bride so he can get his pedophilic groove on...
I learned a number of things from this film including (but not limited to) the following;
1. When courting an underage girl, a rag doll is an appropriate gift.
2. Blackmail is an extremely effective way to get yourself a wife, particularly one who is under the age of consent.
3. It's difficult to study in a school where pigeons occupy the rafters due to the constant threat of being pelted with bird droppings.
4. The only decent clothes (i.e. clothes without ridiculously huge, gaping holes or tears) mountain folk seem to possess is that which they wear to weddings and funerals.
5. If a group of men donning potato sacks on their heads come calling in the middle of the night, it's best not to answer the door.
6. Not all nude bathing sequences in movies are erotic.
7. Never cross a dwarf as they can really hold a grudge.
This is one of those films from way back when that, under the guise of an educational feature, claimed its intent supposedly to illuminate a practice the general population would find deplorable (child marriages in this case), but the reality was exploitation pure and simple. You see, due to the censorship laws at the time (this was way before the ratings system was ever enacted), there were a whole lot of things you couldn't show or depict in films, particularly nekidness of any kind. One way around this was to claim your feature was an educational film. As far as Child Bride, it's probably one of the more lurid and creepier early exploitations films I've seen, but then again I really haven't seen that many. The most uncomfortable sequence for me was a lengthy and unnecessary bit involving Shirley Mills disrobing and bathing in a pond. At first it seemed like we wouldn't see much, as due to some carefully positioned leaves on a shrub, our view of her nekkid form is slightly obscured...but then we see a whole lot more as she's swimming around nekkid as can be...with the main antagonist Jake leering on from high atop a ridge. I'm unsure how old Ms. Mills was at the time this movie was made, but she definitely looked the age she portrayed, that of about twelve. Now I'm no prude, and looking at the nekkid form of another human doesn't particularly bother me (especially if that form belongs to someone like Mira Sorvino...homina homina), but gazing upon nekkidness of anyone under a certain age makes me feel uneasy. Another scene that put me off a bit was when Jake came around courting Jennie, presenting her with a rag doll as a present, and talking about how he's going to make her his wife. Talk about things that make you go eww...the funniest part in the film for me comes during a funeral of all things. It seems the recently departed died under mysterious circumstances, but most in attendance seem to have an idea who most likely helped the man along his way to the great unknown. As the minister preaches on, he makes some reference to how the mourners shouldn't fret over the soul of the recently departed, but more so for that of the person responsible, to which a number of people direct their gaze towards the person they believe responsible, all of them looking at the same individual. The acting is pretty much what you'd expect from this `throbbing drama of shackled youth', that being shoddy, overly melodramatic and just this side of amateurish, while the story seems to ramble along happily (or haplessly) from one creepy sequence to another. All in all I found this to be a curious (i.e. sleazy) bit of celluloid that was both repugnant and humorous within the brazenness of its material, and one that will appeal to the more die-hard exploitation fan, but not so much to more general audiences. I gave this film a three star rating particularly because it actually made me feel something (uncomfortable is a feeling) along with providing a few laughs while wallowing around within its own sleaze.
The picture quality on this Alpha Video DVD release is rough at times, displaying a decent amount of obvious wear and tear, but I've seen worse (particularly from Alpha). The audio comes through well enough, given the age of the feature. As far as extras there's really not a lot, except for a handful of previews for a bunch of low budget, independent films.

"I'd put her in boiling oil and watch her fry.".......2005-02-04
It's amazing what you can get away with even when you have censors breathing down your neck. With the Hays Code of film censorship enforced in 1934, a number of films were made which appeared to be moral crusades. In reality, these films gave an excuse for a titillating glimpse at some lurid element. It was also important, in these 'moral crusade' films to include moral statements--usually at the beginning of the film--making it clear that the film is some sort of attempt to expose a wicked social ill, and educate the public about it at the same time. These moral crusade films include such titles as "Cocaine Fiends" and the well-known "Reefer Madness." "Child Bride" (alternate title: "Child Bride of the Ozarks")--made in 1938 falls into the same category. In this case, however, the social ill is supposed to be limited geographically to those regions in America that allowed early marriage.
"Child Bride" is set in the Ozarks, and some seriously bad acting besets the film. Jennie Colton (Shirley Mills) lives with her parents in a squalid shack and attends school with the other ragamuffins. Freddie (Bob Bolinger) is her innocent sweetheart, and the two children spend a great deal of time together. There are several extremely cheesy scenes of Jennie in the pigpen, Jennie at school etc., but the real action begins when the schoolteacher begins campaigning to raise the legal marrying age in the area. Seems the men wear their women out, and when one dies off after bearing a number of children, the widower just selects another pre-pubescent girl for his next victim.
The film includes two scenes that amazingly sneaked by the censors. One scene involves the schoolteacher whose ripped nightgown gets more tattered with every step and is practically falling off by the time the action reaches a crescendo. The other scene was quite startling and involves Jennie swimming nude in a river. Jennie's nudity is observed by the film's wicked villain and salivating Peeping Tom, Jake Bolby (Warner P. Richmond). The film emphasizes the notion of pedophilia when Jake courts little Jennie by giving her a doll. Jennie is a plump cheeked, angelic, sunny little girl, and the idea of her being married has some really sick implications, but this film, amazingly, slid by the censors. With bad acting, and a sappy plot, the film's main value is as an artifact. Collectors and film history aficionados will be interested in the film, but that's about its limit. The picture is a bit grainy, and the action includes a few minor skips, but it's certainly watchable quality--displacedhuman
classic main street film.......2004-11-24
The main street films of the 30s and 40s were made outside the studio system, and meant to exploit all the elements banned by the Hayes Code, which had robbed many Hollywood productions of adult elements. Basically, the independent main streeters gave the public what some of them really wanted: sex, nudity, violence, drug abuse, and generally outrageous/illegal behavior. Most of them showed in run-down theaters in urban areas, where censorship was less intense, hence the term main street. Although a trove of these films was found in LA about 20-25 years ago, only 4 seem to have become readily available. Three are the classic drug hysteria films (Reefer Madness, Cocaine Fiends, and, the best of them, Marijuana: Weed With Roots In Hell). The 4th is Child Bride, which is vastly more sophisticated in terms of acting, set design, direction, and script (remember, this is relative to main street films). The film has some startling moments, and a weird verisimilitude because the star, Shirley Mills, looks the age of her character (about 13, although she was much older when she made the movie). The print seems identical to the UCLA archive print that was available on VHS. It has identical glitches. However, it is genuinely uncut and, overall, in good condition, especially compared to some of the horrendous prints of the 3 drug films that have been circulated on tape and DVD. Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of the film is how many of its elements appear in a classy art-house film like Songcatcher. Maybe the line between art and exploitation is a lot thinner than one imagines it to be.
Given the price and quality of the print, and its historical significance, this DVD is really quite a bargain.

So excited to find this on DVD!.......2007-01-16
I saw this movie when it originally aired on TV. I absolutely loved it, and I loved the two sequels as well (all three are now on DVD!).
Rue McClanahan is wonderful as are Kristy McNichol and Patrick Duffy. For me though, the standout is Anne Bobby. She is delightful in this part, and I just fell in love with her in this movie.
I am so pleased that it is available on DVD from Freemantle Media. The quality is great for a TV movie, and you can't beat the price either!
Description
Starring Christopher Atkins, Diane Lane, Conrad Bain, Helen Hunt, Kiel Martin, Warren Vanders, Joan Shawlee, Dee Wallace-Stone, Alan Nash, Heidi Bohay, Babetta Dick and Robert E. Hartenberger. In July of 1953, Arizona state troopers invaded Short Creek, a remote desert town north of the Grand Canyon. In this village resided a small group of religious polygamists whose lives were ruled by a group of sect elders, 'the Brethren.' Against this backdrop develops the tale on an unlikely, star-crossed romance.
Customer Reviews:
Not exactly a review.......2007-09-05
I haven't seen this and have no idea of whether it's good or not. I'm writing this entirely because the product listing for the DVD release shows it to be 'Unrated', while the film was actually made for television - so potential customers should realize that if it was submitted to the MPAA for rating, it'd be either G or PG (perhaps PG-13) - not what one usually expects in an 'unrated' flick.
Interesting movie........2005-02-23
A girl, a young Diane Lane, is being groomed to be a child bride to a man old enough to be her father. She is unsettled by this because she is in love with her intended's son, Christopher Aiken. She is reluctant to leave her home, until her best friend, a young Helen Hunt, is caught escaping the compound. Her friend is then forced into a marriage as soon as she arrives home. This has the two young lovers making a break to the real world.

great box set!.......2006-09-12
you i know that i love box sets and i love this childs play box set as well the only bad thing is that the 1st inst in it because its mgm,,but thats fine. these movie scared me when i was a boy but know watching it you can really find the dark humor in it. alot of people will dog this movie like Michael "Critical Writing" but what does he know,all the movies he likes all suck anyway,,because honestly how can a lord of the rings nerd talk trash about chucky.... but anyway this is a great buy if you like horror/dark comedies!
A Horror Movie Icon..........2006-04-23
It's been hard to write a review for the Child Play movies since I haven't seen one in a long time. I rented them from Blockbusters and watched them. I thought they were extremely good, but I did think that the 3rd Child Play was sort of dumb. My favorite of this set has to be Bride of Chucky. I just found it hilarious.
to answer the guy before me..........2006-03-20
ok to answer the guy below me who seems to think chucky is better than jason and michael myers..the reason people put chucky down he is to inconsistent in the value of the films..childs play ruled, childs play 2 was pretty good, and
then there isnt a good chucky until seed of chucky which is sub par... so to answer your question why do we put chucky down but hold jason and michael high...in short they kick ass chucky got soft..kk..im out buhbye
You Can't Keep A Good Guy Down.......2006-03-16
First off I was a lil disappointed that the first one wasn't in the box.. But I picked it up brand new for $5 so it wasn't that big of a deal. Child's Play 2 was fairly decent. 3 However... Well let's not go there. I haven't sat thru that one since I saw it in theaters.. I'll give it another watch eventually. Bride of Chucky wasn't a great movie but it was fun. Chucky and his comments make the movie worth watching. Jennifer Tilly's not bad either ;)
I want to know why people really feel the need to bash Chucky? I think he's better to watch than Michael Myers (Halloween), Pin Head (Hellraiser) & Jason Vorhees (Friday the 13th)
Chucky = ratings.
Don't .... with the Chuck.......2005-10-05
I love Chuckie! He's such a great character that I never get tired of watching! This is a great collection with 3 great movies. In order from the best to worst: Child's Play 2, Bride of Chuckie, Child's Play 3. If a movie had a horrible plot, if you put Chuckie in it, I would be willing to watch it... Chuckie just adds this sort of funny yet scary and evil combination that adds humor and greatness to any movie. Whatever you do, just don't .... with the Chuck!

Huh?.......2004-05-30
Buy the Childs play pack that includes part 3 rather then this. I dont know why part 3 isnt included here, or why they would group 2 and 4 together?
Instead of this, buy Childs play 1. and "The Chucky Collection"(bride of chucky/childs play2/childs play 3)
The two best Childs Play movies in one cool collection.......2003-02-20
Who could forget precious memories from CP2- the teacher ruler bashing scene, or the painful 'dad on the stairs scene' I was totally blown away by these movies when i was a kid and still love them today.
Bride of chucky is the best, being the most dark, gothic and edgy out of all the CP movies.
If you like good horror movie classics, or just want to see a doll trying to kill a little kid (or two dolls having sex, as in the cas of BOC) you have to get this collection. Commentaries on the BOC disk are fascinating.
I only have to grumble about the lack of features on the CP2 disk, thats why im giving it 4/5
~~~*BRIDE OF CHUCKY*~~~.......2002-08-21
For ten years the tortured soul of serial killer Charles Lee Ray has been imprisoned inside a child's doll. Chucky is reborn when his old girlfriend, Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) rescues his battered doll parts from a police impound. But Chucky wants his new playmate cut down to size, so he transforms his blushing bride into a stunning little terror. Who knows what will happen next when this dinamic dual hits the streets!
WHERE IS CHILD'S PLAY 3 ??????????.......2001-06-21
I absolutley adore the child's play movies. Both of these movies are great. In Child's Play 2 Andy Barclay is now living with foster parents and you guessed it Chucky has found him, what follows is murder, chucky funny one liners and good entertainment. In Bride of Chucky, his girlfriend (when he was a man) ressurects chucky and they end up going on a wild, gory road trip with two teenagers, Who are heading where chucky needs to go to get the amlet of his dead corpse of charles lee ray. Both movies are great and already in my collection, but My Question to UNIVERSAL IS WHERE IS THE GREAT CHILDS PLAY 3 ON DVD ??? PLEASE , PLEASE RELEASE CHILD'S PLAY 3 ON DVD UNIVERSAL.
