Description

Oscar®-winner Ben Kingsley plays the Great Zamboni, a magician with a mysterious secret. He lives alone with his jaguar, Shadow, in the Spooky House, an old mansion rigged with magic tricks and hidden chambers. In spite of all the urban legends about the reclusive Zamboni, young orphan Max (Matt Weinberg) believes he can befriend him. His attempts to charm the magician, however, are met with stubborn resistance. As Max and his friends try to uncover the secret of Zamboni's past, they are harassed by a trio of teenage bullies who work for the town's eccentric crime queen (Oscar®-winner Mercedes Ruehl). When the bullies chase the kids into the Spooky House on Halloween, a night of hilarious magic and spectacular illusions ensues. In this funny, heartwarming story, Zamboni and Max ultimately discover the power of real magic.

I found this one while searching for GooseBumps shows for my daughters loved those, I was pleasantly surprised how I got wrapped up in this show, it is not a 'glitzy' as GooseBumps and definatly not a "spooky" show like GooseBumps but rather a pleasant alternative. Its low buget (like GooseBumps) but I'd say more closely resembling SandLot or Never Ending Story (of which I only liked the first one). I found myself wanting to stop but couldn't, I just had to see what happened next, but then having a professional magician as a father most likely helped too.

I deffiantly recommend this for anyone looking for 'nicer' story of a different type, not high budget, not real flashy, not an 'on the edge of your seat' type of movie but just a good alround family show, with a few funny parts here and there.
But if your looking for 'Spooky', 'Scary', 'High Budget', something you would pay at a theator to see, then keep looking (but be sure to bookmark it for a later date!)

I bought Spooky House for my grandchildren ages 4 and 10. We watched it together three times on Thanksgiving. Then they watched it three more times the next day. It is great entertainment and a moving story for everyone. The kid characters are great. Mercedes is a super comedian. Ben is threatening and then loving. Disney wishes they had made this one!

Produder/Director,William Sachs has crafted a simple storyline and turned it into very charming, funny, and touching tale that is perfect for the whole family.
Ben Kingsley, as Zamboni, "The Spooky Man", turns in a masterful performance in concert with the new, natural, and talented Matt Weinberg as Kingsley's young counterpart and eventual cohort.
Encountering the "bad kids", ably headed by Mercedes Ruehl,
our young group of heroes, lead by Kingsley and Weinberg, send us on a merry chase with magic illusions and a surprise, touching conclusion which wraps up the adventure in a delightful way.
This is a little classic with a big heart that belongs in everyone's video library. And, for once, the price is quite reasonable (for the DVD).

Spooky House is magical fun for the entire family. Award winning Ben Kingsley as the 'Great Zamboni' is true to form as is award winning Mercedes Ruehl as the campy 'Boss'. The kids are adorable. The music will keep your toes tapping and your kids dancing. A winner!

I thought this was a great family film. Ben Kingsly does a fantastic acting job. The story is very moving and a great view for the children. I would recommend this film to any parent with young kids.

There remains an air of somber and mysterious feeling throughout this French movie. It is quiet, lacks an intrusive soundtrack, and occasionally, we see stunning panoramic view of Paris. The film lacks color, but it is not in black and white. This lack of coloring enhances the somberness.

Hungarian, Simon the magician, is summoned by police to solve a murder. The man arrives and with the aid of a translator, and he requires a biologist and some high-tech equipment to analyze the house plant's energy and said the plant will identify the killer.

He solves the murder and tries to escape anymore unwanted publicity, as he prefers to be alone in his work. He also falls into these trance-like sleeps almost anywhere he is at the time.

Meanwhile, Simon, in his mid-to late 50's falls for a very young college girl who was conducting surveys on the street. She appears to be no more than 20 years old. They have a chat for coffee and he cannot understand her but it's clear the two are attracted.

Meanwhile, a rival magician connects with Simon the magician to challenge him to a duel. The two are to be buried underground for 3 days. The rival magician has a system that uses the "bear's brain" technique that will allow him to remain underground in this Houdini type challenge and his plan is methodically layed out as a computer graphic that he shares with Simon.

The two are tested by medical professionals, both put underground and monitored. Then, you will see which one survives, and the outcome of the relationship. ....MzRizz

Very slow story that doesn't deliver in the end. An updated version of the apocryphal confrontation between Jesus and Simon the Magician, this Simon lives in modern day Hungary and comes to France to work with the French police on a murder case. During his stay he solves the crime, falls in love with a young girl and renews an acquaintance with an old rival who challenges him to a test of magical power. They both agree to be buried alive for three days and see who is powerful enough to survive.

You keeping waiting for something to happen but it never does. With such a wonderfully original concept it could have been a great film, but this movie proves that a good idea doesn't equal a good movie.

I love this movie!.......2006-11-25

I taped this mini series off tv in 1984, and every Christmas season my family and I love to watch this. (I bought newer better copies when they became available.) Set in the English country in the early 1930's, it is very charming. A young boy's magical experiences and how he saves everyone, including the town's 1000th Christmas celebration in the Tatchster Cathedral. It's alot like an early Harry Potter, but with the snow and Christmas music. I have found 3 different versions of this movie---depending on how much they edit and shorten it. I prefer the long version, 165 minutes, with all the details, quirky characters, quaint scenery and settings, and lots of charm.

Box of Delights.......2003-12-08

The Box of Delights is a fantastic television programme. As a little girl, I remember watching the programme every christmas in Britain and was a childhood tradition. In Canada, however, it is not available. The show is brilliant, full of magic and myth. Both parents and children will love this programme, I definitely recommend The Box of Delights for anyone who enjoys Arthurian Legend or British/Celtic mythology.
