Petula (Rachel Weisz) meets Dorothy (Susan Lynch) when Dorothy smacks a lead pipe into the head of Petula's boyfriend, who was strangling Petula at the time. Thus begins the darkly comic thriller Beautiful Creatures--a little bit Thelma & Louise, a little bit Alfred Hitchcock at his most sardonic. When Petula's boyfriend dies, she and Dorothy cook up a scheme to extort money out of the boyfriend's rich and vicious older brother--a scheme that would probably have fallen to pieces until an investigating police detective named George starts to help it along for devious reasons of his own. Soon Dorothy and Petula are coping with a bitten-off finger, Dorothy's own nasty boyfriend, a salesclerk with a bondage fetish, and more. Fans of movies with a similarly deadpan tone (like Bound, Fargo, and Pulp Fiction) will love the film's caustic humor, and both Weisz and Lynch are delightful. Fast-paced and unpredictable, Beautiful Creatures is a witty thriller that deserves attention. --Bret Fetzer

Humorous, startling and entertaining film.......2007-05-31
Two beautiful women meet by chance when one is being throttled by her boyfriend in an alley. The other also suffering an abusive relationship picks up a pipe to aid the woman and accidentally kills the man. The women concoct a kidnapping to cover up the murder but nothing goes as planned in this dark Comedy of Errors meets Thelma and Louise; except with a happier ending... at least for the women. It is a humorous, startling and entertaining film with a lot of evil men who like to threaten, control and abuse women. The women are meek and compliant in the beginning but really come into their own by the end.
Like a celluloid `little baby nothing' .......2006-07-10
Rachel Weisz's vulnerable intensity steals almost every scene and is loaded with pathos. As with Jude Law in `The Talented Mr. Ripley', the assumption that every character and viewer will fall slightly in love with her is the crux of the film, and because of her performance its justified. 'Beautiful Creatures' is set against a shattered urban backdrop that is oppressive in its ugliness, and Weisz's beauty offers a powerful contrast to this, and consequently creates a powerful bond between her and the audience which causes the viewer to be rooting for her as she tries to fight off the onslaught of male aggression. There is a disturbing undercurrent of sexual violence in the film, and the possibility of her being somehow violated is returned to with alarming frequency. You can't help but feel caught up in her plight and constantly rooting for some kind of revenge on the male perpetrators. I'm not sure if there was a feminist agenda to the script- the notion that pornography leads to violence is also revisited. The presentation of the male actors was extremely thought provoking and powerful. Although the ending might seem obvious, I felt it was satisfying and it broke the mould of many postmodern films which leave the ends untied in order to retain an air of mystery.
A Great Dark Comedy And Ms. Weisz Is So HOT!!!.......2005-09-24
This movie is about two women who are caught in bad relationships until certain events occure to free them of their domestic shackles. These two ladies might be abused by their men but are in no way "Profesional Victims' as so many women in Hollywood movies are portrayed.Ms. Weisz is beautiful as always and has a very sexy English accent and a great flair for comedy which is why I give this movie 5 stars.
Sans Brad Pitt--still the better film.......2005-04-25
Two young women, one exceptionally beautiful, are involved with highly abusive men. They seem unable to extract themselves from these indiviual violent relationships until events pull them apart. In spite of the violence, this is actually a darkly humorous movie, laugh out loud, and well worth seeing. There are no decent men in this picture, all are twisted or corrupt and violent. That is too bad. A sense of balance here would have been better. The acting is very good and the background of Glasgow is a pleasant change. There is a Thelma and Louise quality to it without the attributes of Brad Pitt. That said, this is the better film.
The movie has style.......2003-10-23
Sometimes the plot is not important and sometimes neither is acting. I actually found the acting in this movie quite mediocre. Nonetheless, all this is not important. The movie has style and you can see this from the start. It is quite rare and I value this very much.

Not so much a feminist twist on the bloody British gangster thriller as a vision of innocents in thugland, Beautiful Creatures offers a pair of birds at the center of this traditionally bloke-driven genre. Think of it as Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels by way of Bound. Susan Lynch and Rachel Weisz are Dorothy and Petula, gangster girlfriends desperate to escape the Scottish underworld of scumbags, violent gang bosses, and corrupt cops.
The familiar details are all here--a dead body that won't go away, an uneasy balance between sadistic violence and black humor, and a tightening web of conspiracies and revenge plots that converge in a messy climax. But director Bill Eagles and writer Simon Donald temper the runaway plotting and cutthroat conniving of alpha males with moments of female bonding and giggly girl talk. Unfortunately they never quite overcome the brutal misogyny inherent in the genre. Still, there's a real joy in seeing Petula's self confidence blossoming under Dorothy's encouragement and trust, and you can't help but want the giddy girlfriends to triumph over the big, bad underworld. --Sean Axmaker
