Best Titanic film.......2007-07-31

This is the classic film about the Titanic--a rendering of William Lord's book of the same name. It is a beautiful Black and white print with "pristine digital transfer with restored image and sound". It focuses on
the complete Titanic reality, rather than a fictional romantic story.
Often reality is more gripping than fiction; that is true with this film.
The final death of the Titanic is absolutely stunning.

One of the Best Titanic Movies.......2007-06-08

If you are interested in the Titanic, this movie is highly recommended and a must own. While not a documentary, this drama is about as close as you can get to one (there is some dramatic license.) The script is right out of Walter Lord's brilliant book "A Night to Remember." The sets are very close to the the actual ship. The dialogue is pretty much what was said that night. Watching this dvd, you will see many instances where James Cameron pays homage to it in his "Titanic". The audio commentary on this film is really good and the bonus documentary "Making of" is a good watch too. It's filmed in B&W, which gives it a historical feel. A bit pricey, but splurge on it!

Cold hard facts,thrilling movie.......2007-03-13

There isn't any "heart will go on" , no lovers from different class levels , and other than the mistake(before the wreck was found)of having the ship go down in one piece, this movie hits all the right notes. With just the known facts, and a cast of British actors that are not that well known this super black & white movie pulls you into the story and never treats you like you are stupid. the fact that Walter Lords book is used as the guide helps get the history right and still gives you a thrilling and heart breaking movie of "if only " and "could have been's". this a first rate movie that belongs beside "titanic" in your collection.

It's business as usual for Mystery Science Theater 3000 in this sixth volume of episodes taken from the archives of the long-running television show, which is nothing but good news for MST3K's many adherents--and with four discs and six hours of content, neither longtime fans nor newcomers to the series will be shortchanged. The formula is the same as ever: having been sentenced by mad scientist Dr. Clayton Forrester to watch unspeakably bad movies (all part of the doc's wacky plan for world domination), janitor Joel Robinson (portrayed by series creator Joel Hodgson, who would later write for Jimmy Kimmel's variety show) and his robot buddies Crow and Tom Servo sit aboard their spaceship, the Satellite of Love, and do exactly that. Their own skits and interstitial shtick are mildly diverting, but as always it's the wisecracks our heroes direct at the screen that dominate the proceedings far more than the movies themselves. By turns genuinely witty and groan-inducing, their nonstop riffing, laden with puns, sarcasm, and cultural references (from poet Allen Ginsberg's "Howl" to atrocious pop songs like Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods' "Billy Don't Be a Hero," all in the space of a couple of breaths), usually drowns out the dialogue in the films. That's not a bad thing, of course, when the movies are turkeys on the order of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Vol. 6 lineup, which comes from episodes first aired between 1990 and 1994. They include Attack of the Giant Leeches (boasting perhaps the least convincing movie monsters ever created), Gunslinger (a Western that drags on interminably), and the self-explanatory Teenagers from Outer Space. Disc 3 contains six shorter films, and may be the best of the lot for that reason alone.

With Mystery Science Theater 3000 having departed the airwaves in 1999 (it began in '88), the show lives on primarily by way of these DVD releases. And while some would argue that a little of this stuff goes a fairly long way, Rhino's typically fine packaging and presentation (even without any bonus features) make this and the other MST3K sets a collector's treat. --Sam Graham

As much as I am a huge fan of MST3K, this set is easily one of the strongest DVD collections that Rhino has put out. With three episodes from the Joel/Comedy Central era and a disc full of "shorts", this set will keep you occupied for so long, what with repeated viewings and all.

"Attack of the Giant Leeches" is first on the list, and, well, hardly any attacking ever occurs. Joel and the bots have a good time with this film, although it's not really their best work in the 4th season. 7.5/10

"Gunslinger", one of Joel's last episodes, is a pretty slow-paced Roger Corman western that adds good fodder for the trio to riff at. It stands on the same level of the Giant Leeches film, though. 7.5/10

"Mr. B.'s Lost Shorts" happens to be a great compilation of selected shorts from certain episodes. They're all gems here, but the best is undoubtedly "Mr. B. Natural". As dull and retarded as an educational short can get, lost of hilarious riffs occur with this one, such "Joel, I'm scared.", or "Hey, leave my father out of this!" Seriously, this is really funny stuff. 9/10

This set goes off with a bang as "Teenagers From Outer Space", from the start adds great riffs from the trio. One of the best host segments occurs with the hosts explaining through illustration what happens in movies and in real life. 9/10

Well, that's it. I don't seem to like this set as much as Volume 7 or the Essentials, but this set still is a lot of fun. Worth the money, period.

MST 3000---JUST AS I REMEMBER IT........2006-03-19

The MST 3000 Collection, Vol. 6 was as I hoped it would be (that
is, just as when I saw them the first time, I laughed through-
out each episode). The Collection has made certain B-movie bombs I would not watch a second time, make me want to go back for re- runs.The Sci-fiers "ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES" and "TEENAGERS
FROM OUTER SPACE" were made more watchable than many big bucks
horror flicks, contemporary and recent. It brings back to mind
again; why was it ever taken off the air?

Two greats and two not so greats.......2005-09-12

Overall I'm really happy with this collection because of the inclusion of Teenagers From Outer Space and the Lost Shorts disc, but I would not have chosen to include Gunslingers, one of my least favorite episodes, and while Attack Of The Giant Leeches isn't bad it's not all that great either.

Teenagers From Outer Space is a new favorite of mine since getting this collection. Aside from being a hilarious episode it's suprisingly watchable as a movie, with a fast pace and a story that actually mostly makes sense, as well as some real emotion too. Of course it's cheesy in the way that all fifties space operas were, with goofy "space" suits, rayguns and a forced-perspective lobster for a monster. Seriously, it's a dead lobster. Not even a puppet. Just a lobster. "The high council will sentence you to TORCHA!!"

Mr. B's Lost Shorts is another gem, with the hilarious and wacky Mr. B Natural leading the way, followed by some old and grainy educational films about driving safety and marriage and a crazy acid-trip of a car commercial from the fifties.

Gunslinger is a poorly-made western which would be unbearable without Joel and the Bots to riff on it, and even with the jokes it's slow and agonizing. It's my second least favorite episode next to Catalina Caper and I wish something like Night Of The Bloodbeast had been included instead.

Attack Of The Giant Leeches is okay, but not a great episode in my opinion. It's drab and boring and the riffing does a lot to liven it up but not enough. The leeches themselves look like guys wearing garbage bags and silly string, so that's funny. But the episode in general disappoints.

All in all, the good makes up for the bad, so it's worth the money to me.

Another great Joel collection, and Mr. Bs shorts for a bonus.......2005-08-10

This is a great selection for fans of the Joel era. You have one of the funniest shorts ever in "Undersea Kingdom" In which a group of sailors and a bratty little kid named Billy, and find the sunken continent of Atlantis. The reguallar movies on this selection are Top Notch, "Attack Of The Giant Leeches" is borefest that only J&TBs can cure when a cheating wife and her husband's best friend go missing, leave to jerky wildlife mnagement expert to save the day, (or at least find the bodies). Teenage Aliens, where bleeding heart rebels against his alien peers, and decides to not cause an apocoliptic lobster ruin planet earth. The shorts are always a bonus, Mr. B Natural is always a good one to use in order to turn a chum into a misty.

top ten horror classic .......2007-08-26

This film not only stands the test of time it transends most withcraft films (exception haxan ). Dana Andrews plays a doctor trying to disprove black magic and the supernatural in the modern world.
During a trip to England for a symposium on debunking such myths he crosses paths with Julian Carswell (played superbly by the underrated Nial Mc Guiness ). Carswell tries to disway the doctor from the scrutiny placed on Carswell and the devil worship cult he leads .
A curse is placed on Andrews and he is given two weeks till a demon from hell with kill him . The story then begins to take Andrews down a dark path where science and reason dont stand a chance .
Slowly the good doctor realizes that he is doomed and that only Carswell himself can spare him a horrifying fate .
This film is without a doubt one of the greatest horror films ever made and a must in every horror fans colection . A MUST IF YOU DONT OWN IT BUY THIS TODAY !!!!!!

A classic chiller.......2007-08-17

Night of the Demon/Curse of the Demon is one of the greatest films of the 1950's. A cult classic that holds up to repeated viewings. The film is based on the M R James story 'Cast the Runes' and features Dana Andrews as John Holden, a sceptical psychologist who scepticism begins to ebb away after he meets Dr Julian Karswell.

Karswell is played brilliantly by Niall MacGinnis and there are a number of marvellous scenes between Holden and Karswell. Perhaps the best being a scene in the London Library. Of the remaining cast Maurice Denham is deserving of mention for his small but crucial role at the start as Professor Harrington. There is a marvellous scene at the beginning of the film when Harrington visits Karswell. Its beautifully written and played by the two actors.

Although it is often quoted that the director Jacques Tournier did not want the Demon shown in the film at all, but bowed to pressure from the producers, the Demon when it appears is a remarkable special effects creation for 1957. Tournier was probably right but it doesn't spoil the film that much.

This double bill DVD version contains two different versions: The American cut called 'Curse of the Demon' which ran to 82mins and the British cut 'Night of the Demon' which ran to 95mins. Both are very good but the longer version is the better. This is a film that improves with every viewing.

The best made horror/mystery ever!!!!!!!!!.......2007-08-15

Don't be fooled by the title. This movie has it's horror moments
but it's a great mystery movie. The opening with the demon in the
smoke is awesome. Dana Andrews is great as the skeptical doctor
but Nalls McGuiness makes the movie as the mild but evil devil
master. The scene with Andrews in the woods with the smoke chasing
him is outstanding. Finally the ending with the beast destroying
McGuiness is unforgettable. Highly recommended.

Great Film!.......2007-08-08

I have loved horror films ever since I was a small child. I was always sneaking downstairs on a Friday or Saturday night after my folks had gone to bed to get the crap scared out of me. Three films have stayed with me to this day and I am 50yrs old. "The Innocents", "The Haunting" and "Curse of the Demon". All three are just about as creepy as you can get, And far scarier than the gore-fests they seem to make now. Filmed in black and white and with minimal special effects and not a drop of blood, I was never more scared by anything in my life! I saw the extended version "Night of the Demon" and it is by far the better of the two. Not being much of a film expert I was unaware that there were two versions. I just thought that it had been cut up for TV, like they do. But they are all great and all three still give me the willies. And for those of you who are familiar with The Haunting, how long was it before you were able to sleep with your hands out from under the covers?!

This is a very suspenseful story. Although I have viewed it multiple times it still keeps me on the edge of my seat. In addition the quality of the film is superb.

I found myself laughing where I should have been cringing and perhaps I shouldn't even be admitting to enjoying the movie (smile), but Pat was a well written comedy with thought provoking points hidden deep within the storyline... VERY DEEP.
For those who like pulp and cult fiction, this is a good one to add to your TBW (to be watched) list.

Worst Movie Made..........2006-03-05

This movie is an abomination of a film. How can people enjoy it? The whole thing was worse than a train wreck (pardon my cliche).
I saw it on TV a while back. I admit to being sucked into the mystery of Pat's gender. However, as soon as I googled it and found out that the truth was never revealed, I immediately turned the film off. There was no other incentive for me to keep watching.
The so-called "evolved" humour is nothing more than one lame joke. I actually cringed quite frequently at some of the gags, which were very immature and not funny in the least.
This film may appeal to adolescent males and permanent frat boys, but no one else. For anyone looking for a intellectually stimulating film, I would certainly not reccomend this one.

A memoriable film that soothes the heart and touches the soul. ITS PAT! is one of the first films to put a gender confused he/she into the spotlight. The only thing holding this movie back from the prestigious 5 star rating is the frusturation I felt after leaving the theatre... Alright you got me it went stright to VHS, but still i felt angry and confused while rewinding my copy of Its Pat.

Good Flick, Excellent Aerial Photography.......2007-08-07

Steve McQueen does his best to bristle up his character in this movie. The basic theme is solid and perhaps its defects are only apparent to military (or ex-) aviators.

The plot would have been better cast in a fighter squadron rather than with B-17's. The beauty of those big birds and the excellent images of them flying goes a long way toward carrying the movie. It is just plain difficult however to portray McQueen as a "hot shot" when the mission generally doesn't offer much opportunity for it. McQueen is restricted to disobeying orders in order to sneak below and overcast and drop his bombs anyway (something that would have given the AA gunners a field day) and buzzing the tower (admittedly a beautiful thing to see).

McQueen is thus relegated to emoting his role and that is not his forte. He does a good job though and except for a bit of brittleness toward the end he carries it off well. What he does very well is portray the essential loneliness of a man whose self-identity must continually be proven, both to the world and to himself. The "warrior" self can only be fulfilled in war - something that George Scott famously portrayed in that scene from "Patton" - when,upon surveying the hideous reality of a battle field, said "God help me, I love it." McQueen is no George Scott and "Buzz" is no Patton, never the less, this is a great flick for war movie addicts.

One man's war.......2006-05-04

For those war film buffs who can't get enough of "12 O'Clock High," this is the next best B-17 film, WWII, in the books. In fact, you would think it was just a sequel, another chapter,from that other film. The cast is nearly as impressive: Steve McQueen, Robert Wagner, even the gawky, future Phantom Of The Opera and Shirley Anne Field. Adapted from the John Hersey novel, this is authentic to the details. On-location footage in England, stock air-to-air combat realism, interior footage make this real in every way. Every war had its off-beat hero, probably every platoon, a guy who takes every death-defying mission, even to spare some greenhorn, yet does his glorious best. The camaraderie, class elitism on base is accurate to the letter. Custer had it coming, and he went anyway. This is the way it was, catch a ride.

An Overlooked Gem.......2004-12-29

McQueen's portrayal of a hotshot B-17 pilot is brilliant. This is a guy who loves the war because in it, he's somebody. Without the war he is a nobody-- a misfit without a purpose. The character development of Rickson is superb; his cruel streak gradually becomes visible to his crew and his drive to "win" overrides his loyalty to his co-pilot.
The look and feel of this film reeks of authenticity-- how many other war movies show a planes machine guns being test-fired on the way to a bombing mission. At the end, the B-17 is almost impossible to control and you can almost feel the plane bucking and vibrating as it gradually disintegrates. This story could not have ended any other way.

Three B-17s were flown to England..........2004-07-25

Three B-17s were flown to England in 1963 for this production, which was a project in itself. The flight was chronicled in a book by Martin Caidin, who flew as one of the pilots, engineers, and firemen. Yes, they encountered a number of emergencies, suspicious characters, and thus the book makes for a memorable read, and the movie spectacular for use of actual flying aircraft rather than a cockpit section mounted on a mattress frame (as in the TV series of 12 O'Clock High). The acting isn't bad either...

My favorite B-17 movie.......2004-06-18

This has always been my favorite B-17 movie because of one scene, when McQueen buzzes the CO's office with his bomber because he's angry about being sent out on a leaflet drop mission. The rest of the movie is also great but the B-17 scenes are awesome, rivalling that other B-17 classic "12 O'Clock High". If you liked that one, you'll like this one.

As a fan of the "Terry McCaleb" series by Michael Connelly, I didn't have a problem with Clint Eastwood portraying the F.B.I. profiler. Though there might be an age difference, I thought Eastwood captured the character of the no-nonsense, tough-as-nails McCaleb perfectly. In the film version of the novel, Blood Work, McCaleb has a heart attack while chasing a vicious murderer known as the Code Killer through the back allies of Los Angeles. The movie then picks up two years later and sixty days after McCaleb has finally had a heart transplant. Still recovering from the operation, McCaleb is approached by Graciella Rivera (the sister of the donor, Gloria, whose heart was given to him) to find the man who killed her beloved sister. Perhaps out of guilt at being the receiver of the heart and against his better judgment, McCaleb agrees to look into the case. He really doesn't expect to find out much, knowing that the police have probably taken the case as far as it can go. All of that, however, changes as he starts to put the pieces of the puzzle together. What had seemed at first to be a routine homicide ends up being something far darker and more violent than even our retired profiler could suspect. He soon discovers a connection between Gloria's death and the murder of a man that happened just two weeks before hers. This leads him to eventually believe that the Code Killer is back and that Gloria was killed so that he might have her heart and once again enact the battle between good and evil as the serial killer refers to it. You see, the Code Killer hasn't finished with McCaleb and wants him back in the game. The only thing the Code Killer hasn't figured into the equation is that though McCaleb's fragile, he's not as nice as he used to be and intends to put this asshole down the hard way with everything he's got. The ending isn't going to be pretty.

As the director and star of Blood Work, Clint Eastwood proves that he's still at the top of his game. He keeps everything simple by casting good actors (Jeff Daniels, Angelica Huston, Wanda De Jesus, and Paul Rodriguez) who know exactly what to bring to a performance, getting each shot with just one or two takes, and playing Terry McCaleb as a real character who's in his senior years with a serious health condition. The pace of the movie may be slow, but that's to be expected. Neither Eastwood, nor McCaleb, are exactly young men in their prime. Eastwood plays the role the way it should be done, taking it nice and easy, until the final confrontation occurs and he can do a "Dirty Harry" on the bad guy. I love it at the end when the Code Killer thinks that he's won the game and walks confidently away from McCaleb, only to be shot by our slightly tarnished hero. That's definitely something Dirty Harry would do. Though there are a couple of things that aren't explained in the movie such as how the killer is able to tap into the organ donor's website to get the necessary information or how the killer is able to be parked down the street from the convenience store for the shotgun shootout when he's actually supposed to be doing something else, which I can't give away without telling you who he is. The shootout was great, but the timing wasn't right and left a big plot hole for me to wonder about. It makes me think that a scene was cut out of the movie. Still, Blood Work is an excellent, suspenseful film with Eastwood doing what he does best. It's one I can watch again and again without getting bored, and that says a lot for a movie.

Not the Book.......2006-12-21

Don't expect Connelly's Blood Work in this movie. The story starts out nearly word for word from Connelly's book, however the Eastwood McCaleb is probably a good 30 years older than Connelly's McCaleb - what a disappointment. I cringed every time I saw Eastwood run or fire a gun. At one point in the movie, McCaleb and cop Winston recklessly blast out all of the windows of a speeding car for no apparent reason and then act as if nothing happened. Huh? Somewhere along the line, the movie diverges drastically from the book to the point where the real murderer turns out to be a completely different character. Too bad so much of the original book was lost in translation.

A strong Clint Eastwood movie, where retired FBI agent Terry McCaleb must deal with his new heart and a psychotic killer.......2006-08-27

Blood Work is a clever and satisfying mystery, in my opinion, with one drawback: The killer isn't all that hard to spot. On the other hand, the "why" of two of the killings is appalling, the police procedural aspect is interesting and it has the star quality of Clint Eastwood to power things along. More specifically, it has Eastwood taking full advantage of his age to play a retired FBI agent who has had a heart transplant, who is unwell, who keeps touching his chest in an uneasy awareness that what's there isn't his, who has to gulp pills and plot his temperature, and who often looks clammy and exhausted. At 72, this is the smart Clint Eastwood who some time ago decided to make his advancing years work for him, and not pretend to be an artificially preserved action hero.

Terry McCaleb (Eastwood) was an older FBI agent on the trail of the Code Killer, a psycho serial butcher who leaves number clues next to his victims. McCaleb nearly catches him once during a hard chase through L. A.'s alleys. And then he has a heart attack. Two years later, McCaleb has retired and is living on his boat in the Long Beach marina. Beating in his chest for the last 60 days is the heart of a young woman who was murdered in a convenience store hold-up and who happened to have a rare blood type that matched McCaleb's. Her sister (Wanda de Jesus) has discovered McCaleb was the recipient and talks him into investigating the crime. He reluctantly agrees. His cardiologist (Anjelica Huston) is furious. The two detectives on the case want no part of him. His only allies are his former FBI partner and a neighbor on the next boat, a laid-back aging surfer dude (Jeff Daniels). Painstakingly, McCaleb slowly begins to find a pattern that is intensely disturbing.

For me, the movie works for three reasons. First, even though through the process of elimination the killer can be fairly easily spotted after the first 40 minutes or so, the reason behind the recent killings is well disguised. I didn't catch on until just before McCaleb did. There is a certain ick quality to the killings that made it worth hoping that the killer would have a painful death. Second, Eastwood's acceptance of his age brings a lot of resonance to his recent movies, including this one. Eastwood looks his age. Although most 72-year-olds probably wish they had Eastwood's bone structure and weight, there's no disguising the turkey wattles of his neck. He doesn't try to. Third, McCaleb's concern about his health after his heart transplant is believable. I think it would take some getting used to having a donated organ in your body. I'd be constantly aware that the body's rejection could happen anytime and could be fatal. McCaleb has to haul around a carrying case full of his medications and water. He has to track his temperature for any signs of a fever. He takes a lot of pills. We're with him twice when he has to undergo a catheter inserted in a neck artery and threaded into his heart. It's uncomfortable and exhausting. McCaleb may be a smart FBI detective, but he's a man with a damaged body he has to come to terms with.

As with most Eastwood movies, there is a strong woman for his character to interact with. Graciella Rivers is the sister of the woman whose heart is now beating in McCaleb's body. She's a waitress in an upscale restaurant and bar; she's taken charge of her sister's young son; and while she's concerned about McCaleb's health, she wants her sister's killer caught and punished. When a relationship slowly starts to develop between her and McCaleb, it's very much one between two adults.

The climax of the movie takes place at night in a deserted, half-sunken freighter which had run aground in the middle of the Long Beach harbor. There are plenty of rusting, dark stairwells, steel doors and compartments filled with oil-slicked water. What makes the action work for me is that it is believable. There are no improbable stunts and flashy explosions, just a wounded killer and McCaleb, and McCaleb is pushing himself too hard. It takes a little assistance from Graciella to finish the killer off.

The DVD transfer looks very good to me. There are few extras, including a couple of puff-piece "How we made the movie" features.

Another gritty cop thriller from Clint!.......2006-03-21

This suspenseful police drama suceeds on many different levels--as a gritty serial killer chase, a portrayal of transition to retirement for a high achieving senior, a re-discovery of love and life and a portrayal of obsession. Eastwood excels at choosing great stories. His direction and acting are also superb.

Enjoy another high quality cop thriller from Clint Eastwood!

David Decoteau brings terror to a new level. The acting is sporadic, but the visual quality is very good, and there's lots of great looking guys in this film, for women (or men) who would find that fact appealing. The "special effects" could be better, but they serve their purpose. Continuity is fairly good (only a few things caught my eye). Enjoy it for what it is, if you're into the genre. ~ Leeches

Ok, the "leeches" are rubber leech-gloves on someone's hands, the swimteam is a collection of non-descript male models who cannot act or afford shirts, and the females are utterly useless. Yes, the plot is imbecilic and the dialogue is horrific. Still, I've seen worse. I have seen FRANKENSTEIN ISLAND, my choice for the movie most worthy of total annihilation! So, LEECHES is only painful, not deadly! However, that doesn't mean it's any good either! This is a movie you would only share w/ someone you hate...

This movie is hilarious. I'm just going to assume it's supposed to be bad. At one point I actually saw the string that was pulling the leeches along. And in the scene where the guy takes a shower, his skin colored shorts are clearly visible in several shots. The guy who I thought was the main character, I guess, wasn't because he was killed off about two-thirds of the way through. The main character is the nerd who looks like a super model and dresses in a tank top and 3/4 shorts. He looks like he belongs on a runway instead of a lab.
My FAVORITE scene is when one guy tells another guy to take some pills and the other guy says "How many" and the guy says "The whole bag." LMAO! And then the moron shoves a handful of pills down his throat and washes it down with some liquor. LMAO! I mean...this movie MUST have been made to make people laugh at how stupid it is.
I loved it.

Unusually Strong Cast for a TV Movie.......2007-08-26

"A Handful of Dust," (1988), based on Evelyn Waugh's famous novel by the same name, a jazz-age satire, was made by London Weekend Television, which invested in an unusually strong cast for a television movie. Perhaps as a result of this, the film received theatrical distribution, by Miramax, in the United States.

The film stars James Wilby as Tony Last, so involved in trying to live a nineteenth century lifestyle, and keep his estate Hettam afloat, that he fatally fails to notice his wife Brenda (Kristin Scott Thomas) is bored silly. Rupert Graves appears as John Beaver, (he's what they used to call a bounder); Brenda mistakenly turns to him for solace and fun. (And, of course, by doing so, she gives London's bored silly smart set something to gossip about.) Dame Judi Dench plays Mrs. Beaver, John's opportunistic, shop-owning mother. Anjelica Huston appears as the helpful Mrs. Rattery; Stephen Fry as Brenda's callous brother. Alec Guinness turns in a bravura performance as Mr. Todd, a man you don't want ever to meet. But it can truthfully be said that each of the actors makes the most of his/her part.

The movie is beautifully filmed on location, in Brighton, East Sussex, and London, England. Carlton Towers, Selby, in the north of England, North Yorkshire to be precise, stands in for Hettam. "Dust" then moves on to what's supposed to be the Brazilian jungle, though it's actually filmed in Venezuela, around Angel Falls, the world's third highest. (Of course, we're to understand that this jungle is only slightly more bloodthirsty than that of London society.)

As is fairly well-known, movie and book are based, in part, on the breakup of Waugh's first marriage, and Waugh surely gets the last word on that (although the understanding is that Brenda's supposed to be stupid, as well as selfish, and Scott-Thomas is too smart, and observant, to be able to play stupid). Waugh then, it's said, was at a loss as to how to finish this work, so he combined it with a previously-published short story set in the Brazilian jungle: because of legalities, he was actually unable to use this ending when the book was published in the States, and had to come up with another.

"Dust" is handsomely filmed, and costumed, its cars and interiors are a treat, and it's got its author's flashes of mordant wit. The acting can't be faulted. But it's ultimately a downer, as is Waugh's book: these characters give us little to admire, and sure won't live happily ever after.

Beautifully Filmed But For Me A Waste of Time.......2005-01-27

I recently saw Brideshead Revisted which I found completely wonderful. It was perhaps one of the most enjoyable and captivating films I've ever immersed myself in.

So, hungry for more Evenlyn Waugh (whose books I read in a college course that was based exclusively on his work), I found "A Handful Of Dust" at my library and figured I'd give it a try. Since the same author wrote it and the film was made by the same film people as Brideshead I was filled with anticipation.

My wife and I watched the first hour or so one night and while it had some good moments, and was certainly beautifully filmed, we were left cold by it. But we figured maybe after that the movie would develop.

So we decided to continue it the following night. Big mistake!

I only wish I could get back the time I wasted on it. While I don't expect "Happy endings" in a film (Brideshead certainly didn't have a "Happy ending") the ending in this story left me in disbelief.

Since I didn't read this particular book by Waugh and didn't know its ending, I was completely unprepared when the credits started rolling that the movie ended as it did. I was amazed by the stupidity of all I had just witnessed.

I thought the story would have been much more interesting to see if Tony would "toughen up" a little, transform and grow from the circumstances of his "captivity" rather than just look like a pathetic fool.

Perhaps the only redeeming aspect of the movie was watching Brenda get what she deserved, still it wasn't enough to justify watching this film.

This film was basically a "series of unfortunate events", with myself feeling most unfortunate of all.

My wife to her credit fell asleep during the last part of the film and used the time more wisely than I did.

Compared with a film like Brideshead Revisited, where the characters really developed throughout the story and took on a tremendous amount of depth, This story, was full of one dimensional characters. Dressing these characters up with beautiful costumes and scenery, well written music and excellent cinematography still didn't save the story from being like a bad "twilight zone" episode.

If you look up my reviews, you will see that I don't go out of my way to give bad reviews, but I was so annoyed by the time I wasted I felt I need to share this. Of course I have just wasted more time in connection with this film by now writing this review, but I felt maybe I could spare someone else the wasted time.

If "Requiem for a Dream" were a period peice film ..........2005-01-20

I will admit, I was not a fan of this film during the first fifteen minutes when it nearly went into the "Period Film Sleeping Bag" category, but after you get through this first hump (which is to wean out the naysayers) this is a very disturbing and thoughtful film. In fact, I loved it. It took me awhile to think about it after the first viewing, but I was very impressed. Not only did this film break the boundaries of the dreaded "Period Piece Snore-fest", but also the standard of some films dating after 1988. When I watch films from the 80s, I normally do not see this caliber of writing and intensity. While it may have been around, most films were not ready to dive headfirst into it yet, but apparently Charles Sturridge has no fear. Instead, he gives us a biting story about social decline and satire, while all the while luring us deeper into this very depressive world. Amazing actors, an extremely powerful story, and an ending that will knock your socks off, A Handful of Dust was an unexpected, yet much needed, surprise.

Feeling like a combination of Requiem for a Dream and Angels & Insects, this period piece film offers more than just torrid love affairs and snobbery, it gives us this brief, yet powerful, glimpse into a world turned upside down by the squandering of a woman. I don't mean to sound sexist, but Sturridge does paint a picture where Kristin Scott Thomas' portrayal of Brenda does not paint a pretty picture of the perfect marriage. When Tony is left time and time again with John Andrew while Brenda is off gallivanting around London with John Beaver, our emotions are not placed within Brenda's arms, we care about Tony and his reaction if he were to ever discover the truth. Unlike other period piece films, we sympathize with the husband in this case, and ultimately open so wide to him that when the dramatic, and bizarre, ending occurs, we are left flabbergasted. It almost doesn't compute, but then you think about it and realize that Sturridge is a brilliant director using techniques well beyond his time.

Kristin Scott Thomas does a great job with the material that she is given. Her puppy-dog eyes seem to flutter and keep James Wilby's Tony at bay. I think that is what fascinated me about her character was that she portrayed this feeling of innocence, yet she was in complete control of the situation. That is why I think Rupert Graves' character was the most underappreciated of them all. While some will see him as the villain of his film, I saw him as just a random person that happened to fall in love with a woman that reciprocated back, and happened to see the advantages of falling in love with her. He wanted to get rich quick, and this was his answer. Thomas could have stopped at any time and went back into the arms of Tony, but she chose not to, even with all of her innocence. Guinness surprised the daylights out of me with his role in this film, well, I guess he always does. Then there was Wilby, the most multi-layered character of the film. He showed us all the true love does exist, and that good husbands do as well. He did nothing wrong during the course of this film, yet somehow felt life hit him the most. The events that happen during this film continually to the ending happened directly to him, not really to anyone else. That surprised me. Here was a man that had all the money in the world, a gorgeous house, and a family, but found that luck was never on his side. Together, these three powerful plays hurdle through a tough film to give some genuine thought-provoking performances.

Then there was Sturridge who did his homework secretly in the darkness of his own basement to help bring this film to the silver screen. Most of Hollywood would have probably changed the story to bring about some final satisfaction. This is not the case with Sturridge who keeps the mood and themes of the film in constant view of us. We consider these people high society, with their hunting moments and huge houses, but the reality of it is that they face the same troubles that we, the normal person, do daily. They may have money, but they are human, and that is what Sturridge keeps with us during the course of the 118 minutes. He captures your attention with the characters, throws in some Twilight Zone scenes, and allows your imagination to work overtime. Anytime that a director pulls your mind into a film, the battle is already half won. This was my kind of film.

Overall, I was very impressed. This film broke me of my feeling that all period piece films were bad and dull, and had me drooling for more. While I know that not all will be like this, I cannot wait to see what other directors will dive headfirst into this untapped pool. The cinematography was pure 80s, the actors did their parts, and Sturridge brilliantly colored the themes and satires. I was surprised (and still shocked) by this film and cannot wait to show it to others ... now that is the true test of a great film.

Brenda (Kristin Scott Thomas) and Tony Last (James Wilby) live at Hetton--the magnificent ancestral home of the Last family. Tony dotes on their only child--a son--James Andrew. Life at Hetton is fairly predictable, and Brenda is clearly bored by it all, and yet she doesn't display her boredom except to bemoan the demands of another hideous local event and the tedious rounds of weekend guests who descend upon them regularly. One weekend, Tony invites a young man named John Beaver (Rupert Graves). Beaver's arrival is so innocuous that Tony even forgets that he's been invited, and so the task of entertaining Beaver falls to Brenda.

Brenda, up to this point, has acted like the perfect wife and mother, moving automatically from one role to another, but the arrival of Beaver sparks some dormant desire. With a cold deliberation, Brenda manipulates Tony into allowing her to take a flat in London. Under the pretense that she's studying economics, Brenda begins to indulge in an affair with the shallow Mr. Beaver. Everyone knows about it, but Tony remains blissfully unaware until a tragedy forces Brenda's affair to the surface.

Tony Last is indeed the 'last' of his kind. He represents tradition and gentility that will be swept away by up and coming demands of the more avaricious aspects of society. Beaver is a hanger-on. His mother owns a shop, and supports her darling, precious Beaver, and now he's grown accustomed to a certain lifestyle. Beaver couldn't possibly work hard enough to earn adequate money to enable him to live as the Lasts do, so he contents himself with becoming an eternal guest--staying at other people's splendid mansions. The affair with Brenda is all fun and games--until he is faced with the possibility of actually supporting her in the manner to which they have both grown accustomed. With supreme selfishness, Brenda and Beaver--two unpleasant characters--decide they 'deserve' a large share of Tony Last's money. When faced with being stripped of everything, Last finally refuses to comply, but this action sends him spiraling off into the jungles of Brazil.

There Once Was a Young Man From Limerick.......2007-08-18

"Cowboys and Angels," released in 2005, is a mild, pleasant little comedy-drama, a semi-autobiographical Irish coming of age tale if ever there was one, set, unusually enough, in Limerick,-- yes, that Limerick-- a place we've seldom seen onscreen (save for the film of Frank Mc Court's "Angela's Ashes--" that sure didn't make it look like a pleasant place to be.) But the city looks much more presentable in "Cowboys and Angels." The film stars Michael Legge, who played the teenaged Frank Mc Court in "Angela's Ashes," and may possibly, therefore, be Limerick's leading young actor, as Shane Butler, geeky suburban kid, dressed by Mom, come to town to work in a dull civil service job.

Interestingly enough, the film's written and directed by David Gleeson, who once worked in the exact same Department of Agriculture office, with some of the exact same people, as does his protaganist. At any rate, here we have young Shane fresh in the city, looking for affordable lodgings. He decides to room with Vincent Cusack (Allen Leech), a guy he knew in school, now attending the local art college, and a way out there gay wannabe fashion designer. Thence hangs the tale. Amy Shiels plays Gemma, Vincent's hot, close friend: Shane yearns in her direction, but he's too geeky to consider until taken in hand by Vincent. Frank Kelly turns in a touching performance as Jerry, an older worker in Shane's office, who doesn't realize until too late that it wasn't the best way to spend his time. There are some regrettable interludes where Shane gets into drug smuggling: but how else is he to pay, someone must have thought, for his new wardrobe, and his new directions in life?

As often happens in works about gays and straights, much more attention is paid to the love life problems of the straights, rather than the gays, but Vincent is respectfully treated. The film, by and large, covers familiar territory, but it did win five awards, and it's set in a part of the world we don't often see.

Refreshing.......2007-06-11

How come all the good gay-themed films are from europe? This is a refreshing story of a gay student and a young straight man; the gay man takes the straight 'lost and lonely' young man under his wings, as does a drug dealer. The plot is well tied together is at some points a little thin. The acting is good, especially the young straight man. His story is what drives the movie and the dialouge is well placed.

This was such a good movie the characters are interesting and charming. It does a good job showing what its like being on your own for the first time and in the city; and the unlikely trouble and friends you can find along the way, and when your really lucky you might find yourself as well. Don't miss this movie! It is well worth the price and share it with someone special friend lover or family they will thak you for it

Cowboys and Angels is an engaging Irish dramaedy with somegreat acting and great accents. Nothing too novel in the plot, but it's still a well done movie (especially from a new director) A pleasure to watch.
