Charge your micro-mini cell phones and whip up some orange mocha Frappuccino, 'cuz Zoolander is on the runway, and you're gonna laugh your booty off! Based on a sketch created by writer-director Ben Stiller and cowriter Drake Sather for the 1996 VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards, Zoolander is a delirious send-up of New York's fashion scene as epitomized by male model Derek Zoolander (Stiller), a dimwitted preener who's oblivious to a Manchurian Candidate-like plot to turn him into a brainwashed assassin. Tipped off by a reporter (Christina Taylor), Zoolander teams with rival model Hansel (Owen Wilson) to foil the poodle-haired fashion designer (Will Ferrell) who's behind the nefarious scheme. The goofy plot's only half the fun; with roles for Stiller's parents (Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara), dozens of celebrity cameos, endlessly quotable dialogue, and improvisational energy to spare, Zoolander is very smart about being very stupid, easily matching the Austin Powers franchise for inspired comedic lunacy. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Almost a classic.......2007-09-10

This movie is 6 years old and I'm just watching it now. I never really had much interest in seeing it b/c I didn't think that it looked very funny.... Well I have rented sooooo many Amazon unbox videos that I had run out of options so I decided to take the plunge and rent it. I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. It definately was much funnier than I thought and I had a few good laughs. The costumes and hair are hilarious and Vince Vaughn as Zoolander's coal mining brother who didn't say a work cracked me up. There is a great many "cameos" that make the movie worthwhile and even has Paris Hilton in it 2 years before she bacame famous. Will Farrell does an expected funny job as does Owen Wilson. I'd recommend it for when you are sitting home alone or with a buddy w/nothing to do on a weeknight. It isn't "American Pie" or "Blades of Glory" funny but it is definately worth renting.

2 out of 5 stars Confused satire.......2007-09-06

This is colourful but lightweight satire on the inanity of the fashion industry and male models in particular. Unfortunatley the makers apparently regard the film's audience as itself lacking critical faculties and intelligence, so the satire is obvious and inane rather like, um.... the notional male model.

5 out of 5 stars Did you ever think there might be more to life than being ridiculously good looking?.......2007-08-04

Because there's not.

I love this movie more than I can say. Where to begin. Okay, Ben Stiller plays Derek Zoolander, a male supermodel and recipient of the Male Model of the Year Award for three years in a row. The movie begins with Derek being profiled by a TIME magazine reporter the same night that he's going up for his fourth nomination against newbie Hansel, played by Owen Wilson. Now, that Hansel, he's SO hot right now, but Derek is a household name. Who takes home the honors? The newbie. Of course. Then, to top things off, Derek's best friends and roommates die in a freak gasoline fight accident. Crushed and depressed, Derek decides to leave the world of male modeling and go back to his roots. But how long will that last?

Beginning with the MTV awards right down to the final runway walk, this movie is hilarious! First of all, it's so full of celebrity cameos you can't blink or you might miss one. This includes the outrageous (and fantastic) cameo and a half put in by David Bowie. If you wonder why it's a cameo and a half, you'll have to watch to find out. Secondly, I have never seen a satire so completely willing to go anywhere and take any risk while completely making fun of itself at the same time. I mean, Ferrari, Le Tigre, Blue Steel... what more could you want in a male model? I thank TBS for reintroducing this movie into my life, and Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Will Ferrell for being so hilarious. When you're in the mood for a laugh, Zoolander will never steer you wrong.

This movie is hysterical. I bought it for my sons 13th birthday because they had all caught it on TV a dozen or more times. He and his friends, both girls and boys, quote it and think it is the funniest thing. It is no braniac of a fim but if you are looking to escape and watch something fun and silly this is it.

Chazz Palminteri wrote the script for this excellent story of an Italian American boy (Lillo Brancato) who grows up in the 1960s caught between the strong influences of his blue-collar, straight- arrow father (Robert De Niro) and a Mafia chieftain (Palminteri) who is his all-purpose mentor. De Niro makes his directorial debut with this production and, except for a little stiffness, does very well by the characters and their world. The story does not go precisely where one might expect it to go: Palminteri knows better than to force the central figure to choose between the two most important men in his life, and he doesn't fill time with stock drama about crime or family conflict. Joe Pesci makes an extremely effective and uncredited appearance at the end as a man who doesn't have to do more than speak softly to communicate how dangerous he is. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars I Love This Movie.......2007-09-15

My daughter and I watch A Bronx Tale at least twice a week. I have loved this movie every since I first saw it on AMC. Chazz Palaminteri and Robert De Niro both did great jobs, as well as all of the other actors. Robert De Niro plays a bus driver named Lorenzo Anello. He and his wife Rosini and their nine year-old son, Calogero are living in the bronx. Calogero is fascinated by mobster, Sonny, who is a fixture in their neighborhood. Lorenzo is trying to keep his son away from people like Sonny, but the young boy ignores his dad and befriends Sonny. Calogero witnesses Sonny doing something that he refuses to admit to the police. A bond is thereby created between the young boy and the mobster.
I like how Sonny teaches his young friend, Calogero, who he gives the nick-name of "C" to not try and live the same life that he is living. He tells him to stay in school, stay away from bad company, and know who your real friends are. Calogero loves his father, who is also teaching him to be respectful and hardworking, but he also looks up to Sonny, and picks up a lot of "street smarts" along the way.

4 out of 5 stars "We asked you to leave, now yooz can't leave,".......2007-09-10

"You open the car door for her and then you walk around the back of the car to see whether or not she unlocks the car door for you, that's how you tell whether or not she's a good girl." That may not be the exact quote, but you get the gist. If you didn't know that was the world's perfect litmus test before seeing the movie, you have the most amazing ah ha moment when you first here it explained in the movie. And when you start to think about it, that's when you remember, he's right. This a great movie!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-07-17

This is one of my all time favorite movies! My friend made me watch it and I wasn't too thrilled about it. I read the back of the case and thought it just wasn't my kind of movie. Totally wrong! This movie is pretty much amazing!!! Now all my friends have watched it and not one can say they didn't enjoy it. Watch it! I swear you'll like it!

5 out of 5 stars A Bronx Tale.......2007-07-11

Adapted from a one-man show written and performed by Palminteri, De Niro's directorial debut resembles another coming-of-age New York mafia drama: "Goodfellas." But "Tale" is more nostalgic and less brutal than Scorsese's film, telling the simple story of a teen whose respect for his father's principles conflicts with the allure of a gangster's swaggering charm. Anchored by two excellent performances from De Niro and Palminteri, the film examines issues like family bonds and loyalty in the context of the socially turbulent '60s, when racism and xenophobia were rife--all underscored by C's fledgling romance with a black girl (Taral Hicks). De Niro has a real feel for period details, too, which gives additional lift to this absorbing character study.

5 out of 5 stars If you love Goodfellas!.......2007-06-15

You'll love A Bronx Tale too! A little less shoot em' up and drug laced. But a great coming of age a la' mafia style flick!

One simple question, people: Do you know where you're goin' to? And furthermore, Do you like the things that life is showin' you? These questions are posed in the unavoidable theme song (a huge Seventies hit) from Mahogany, a splashy, diva-sized vehicle for Diana Ross. Miss Ross was hot off her unexpected and critically approved starring role in Lady Sings the Blues when she embarked on this musical, a rags-to-riches saga of a Chicago girl who dreams of being a fashion designer but becomes a supermodel instead. Original director Tony Richardson was replaced behind the camera by Motown founder and puppetmaster supreme Berry Gordy, who knew something about turning Ross into an idealized vision of femininity (for more on their relationship, check out the fictionalized version in Dreamgirls).

Ross looks a little overwhelmed by the plot machinations, which take her from the orbit of a regular-guy activist (Billy Dee Williams) into the glam world of European fashion--the latter courtesy of a cranky, unstable photographer played by Anthony Perkins. Perkins is sky-high fun in this thing, as though he suspected the movie was in trouble and decided to let the tics and nerviness fly. These days Mahogany is treasured either as a fond childhood memory or as a ripe camp-fest, and that's probably about where it belongs. Still, it looks positively restrained next to the other big diva musical of the same historical moment, Barbra Streisand's 1976 A Star is Born. --Robert Horton

"Flash that baby grand of yours you call a smile," Diana Ross coos at Billy Dee Williams in Mahogany, the one about the goody-two-shoes ghetto girl who becomes a supremely jaded jet-set celebrity (gee, Diana, anyone we know?). You can guess what you're in for from the opening scene, when top clothing designer Ross (yes, named Mahogany) receives a standing ovation from the fashion press (!) for a parade of dresses that are kimonos trimmed with lit neon tubes. (Talk about your Method acting: to get into her role, Ross personally designed every costume in the movie, which is one thing, but took credit for it, which, once you've seen them, is another thing altogether.)

Early on, Ross is happy so she dons a rainbow-hued gown and dances among bare white department store mannequins; later, Ross is sad, so at a Roman orgy she drips hot white candle wax onto her tawny bare skin.

This film (with a line of dialogue that instantly entered the annals of kitsch back in '75: "Success is nothing without someone you love to share it with") was the beginning of the end of Ross's brief movie career (The Wiz polished her off). It had no less than three directors: one died during production, one was fired, one came in late but took all the credit (no one really came out ahead).

Anthony Perkins gives a loopy kick to his line readings as "Sean," a control-freak fashion photographer who makes, then wants to break, Ross; he literally tries to drive her crazy, trapping her in a speeding sports car as he shoots photos of her hysterical fear, until the car crashes. From her hospital bed, Ross coolly eyes the 8 x 10 blow-ups of her face in terror, muttering dryly, "Sean wanted to see death -- and he did." (If you miss that throwaway line, Perkins just seems to... disappear.)

Ross reforms before the end credits roll, so the social climber gets a social conscience -- and Billy Dee Williams, too.

keeping it simple...if you are in the right frame of mind, this movie is wonderful in it's simplicty and positve message. if you are feeling cynical and negative, there is plenty to complain about, get over it, and enjoy a wonderful fairy tale about love and dreams and success and failure.

4 out of 5 stars Mahogany is not a musical, it's a drama..........2007-09-05

I generally read reviews for items I want, not items I own, but for some reason, I read some of the Mahogany reviews.

Someone referred to this movie as a musical, but it's not. It's an interesting drama. It is the "rags" to riches story. I put quotations around "rags" because, truly, Tracey Chambers was not in rags, she was just in the wrong line of work.

She did become a fashion model, but along the way, fell in love with a politician and the crux of the movie is the struggle for her to gain her own career and not become the silent supporter of her man's career.

In the end, she chose to come home and be with her man because she realized that "success means nothing if you have no one to share it with" which is what Brian, her man, says to her.

This is one of my favorite movies, but also a movie that pisses me off because Brian, the politician, spends a lot of time demeaning Tracey's choice of work and her career ambition, only to tell her that his job is more meaningful.

Surely even the French, with their legendary love of all things Jerry Lewis, will be sated by the Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis Collection: Vol. 2, a three-disc package containing five comedy-musicals released on DVD for the first time. It would be a supreme stretch to call any of the five films in question (You're Never Too Young, Artists and Models, Living It Up, Pardners, and Hollywood or Bust) a classic, but then, anyone looking for challenging storylines and deep characterizations probably wouldn't be here in the first place. What the films offer instead are various breezy diversions, in the form of Martin, the suave, smooth talking cad and crooner; a parade of lovely young women (Dorothy Malone, Anita Ekberg, Janet Leigh, and Shirley MacLaine among them); some terrific musical numbers that are the highlights of their respective films; and, of course, the antics of Lewis, whose capacity for slapshtick and mugging is apparently inexhaustible. By this time (the mid-1950s), the two had already fit comfortably into their respective personae, with Lewis as the naïve, ingenuous rube and Martin right there to take advantage of him. In Artists and Models, Martin's aspiring painter cops ideas from the frenzied dreams of his comics-obsessed roommate (Lewis, natch) and creates a hit comic of his own, a simple story that's derailed by an absurd and unnecessary subplot involving the U.S. government and some enemy agents. Living It Up, adapted from an earlier musical called Nothing Sacred, finds Lewis cajoled by Martin, his doctor (talk about a stretch!), into pretending that he's suffering from radiation poisoning so they can both enjoy a lavish trip to New York courtesy of a newspaper trying to boost circulation by playing up the "dying" man's plight. Hollywood or Bust, a combination road picture and gentle spoof of the movie biz, casts Martin as a gambler and con man accompanying film fanatic Lewis on a trip to Tinseltown, while Pardners is a Wild West romp ("Jerry Lewis as a gunslinger" about sums it up) and You're Never Too Young puts Lewis totally in his element as he impersonates a 12-year-old boy in order to escape bad guy Raymond Burr. The plots are thin, at best, and the songs are hardly Oscar caliber. Still, the two stars have an undeniable chemistry, and the musical set pieces are highly entertaining, most notably a sort of pas de duh (sic) between Lewis and MacLaine in Artists and Models and an eye-popping, show-stopping dance number in Living It Up. In the end, it all basically comes down to one's capacity to endure Lewis' manic mannerisms (it's worth noting that by Hollywood or Bust, the pair's last collaboration, he's pretty thoroughly upstaged by a Great Dane). If even this cornucopia isn't sufficient, perhaps a move to France is in order. The set contains no bonus material. --Sam Graham

Product Description

LIVING IT UP: The 1954 Martin-and-Lewis romp Living It Up is an amusing remake of the 1937 comedy classic Nothing Sacred. More specifically, it is the film version of the Broadway musical Hazel Flagg, which was based on Nothing Sacred. The heroine of the original undergoes a sex change to become feckless Homer Flagg (Jerry Lewis), who is led to believe that he's dying of radiation poisoning. Manhattan newspaperwoman Wally Cook (Janet Leigh), hoping to improve circulation of her paper, convinces her boss, Oliver Stone (Fred Clark), to fete Homer as a hero with an all-expenses-paid trip to the Big Apple. Meanwhile, Homer learns from local doctor Steve (Dean Martin) that he isn't dying at all. But Steve talks Homer into taking advantage of the celebrity treatment bestowed on him by Wally, and a good time is had by all — until medical specialist Dr. Egelhofer (Sig Rumann) insists upon examining Homer. Highlights include a hilarious bit at Yankee Stadium, and an energetic jitterbug number featuring Jerry Lewis and Sheree North. The handful of songs retained from Hazel Flagg include "Every Street's a Boulevard in Old New York."
YOU'RE NEVER TOO YOUNG: You're Never Too Young is a slapstick-with-songs remake of the 1944 Ray Milland/Ginger Rogers vehicle The Major and the Minor. Dean Martin plays the Milland part, while Ginger's shoes are filled by...Jerry Lewis? Lewis plays an apprentice barber who inadvertently crosses a homicidal jewel thief (Raymond Burr), and equally inadvertently hightails it out of town with the crook's jewels in his possession. Desperate to escape the crook's clutches, and lacking the necessary funds for a train ticket, Lewis disguises himself as a 12-year-old boy so he can travel half fare. He latches onto Dean, a music teacher heading for an all-girls school. After innumerable routines sparked by Lewis's adolescent disguise, the jewel thief catches up with him, leading to a rollicking climactic speedboat chase. Dean Martin has plenty of opportunities to serenade leading lady Diana Lynn (who'd played a supporting role in The Major and the Minor), while Jerry Lewis is in peak form doing his usual "waah-waah-waah" schtick. The original Billy Wilder/Charles Brackett script for The Major and the Minor was reshaped into You're Never Too Young by future bestselling novelist Sidney Sheldon.
ARTISTS AND MODELS: Bearing very little relation to the 1937 Paramount musical of the same name, Artists and Models is a lavish, girl-filled vehicle for the popular team of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Martin plays Rick Todd, a comic-book artist who is under fire from his publisher (Eddie Mayehoff), who complains that Rick's work isn't gory enough. Lewis plays Eugene Fullstack, Rick's roommate, who while asleep dreams up elaborate comic-book plots and garishly costumed superheroes. Eugene's nightmares help Rick become a success; meanwhile, our two heroes romance their luscious neighbors, artist Dorothy Malone and rambunctious model Shirley MacLaine (who during one song wrestles Eugene to the floor and sits on his chest!) Eugene's overworked imagination somehow attracts the attention of a group of Russian spies, who attempt to abduct Eugene during the annual Artists and Models Ball. Director Frank Tashlin uses Artists and Models as an excuse for some of the wildest sight-gags seen in a mid-1950s film. At one point, the director contrives to stuff a gag in Shirley MacLaine's mouth. Tashlin also exhibits his ongoing fascination with female breasts and legs by giving ample screen time to the natural attributes of co-stars Anita Ekberg and Zsa Zsa Gabor. One of the best of the Martin/Lewis efforts, Artists and Models suffers only from being about 20 minutes too long.
PARDNERS: This Dean Martin-Jerry Lewis romp is liberally based on the 1936 Bing Crosby film Rhythm on the Range. Set around 1910, the film stars Lewis as the pampered son of female tycoon Agnes Moorehead. Yearning to return to the Wild West where his father was a famed peacekeeper, Lewis purchases a prize bull, destined for the ranch inherited by rodeo star Dean Martin. It so happens that Martin and Lewis' late fathers were "pardners", so Martin takes it upon himself to protect Lewis from the various and sundry tough hombres in the region. Through a series of bizarre plot convolutions, Lewis gains a reputation as a rootin' tootin' gunslinger, and in his hubris he decides to round up a gang of outlaws headed by Jeff Morrow. As a result, he nearly gets himself blown to smitherines, but Martin shows up in the nick of time to rescue Lewis and help him capture the bad guys. Lori Nelson and Jackie Loughery supply the film's peripheral romantic angle. Pardners ends with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis turning to the camera and promising that they'll keep on making pictures for their faithful fans; ironically, the team was breaking up even while the cameras were turning.
HOLLYWOOD OR BUST: Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis made their last joint film appearance in the girl-filled musical Hollywood or Bust. The thinnish plot finds inveterate film fan Jerry making a cross-country journey to Tinseltown for the purpose of meeting his favorite screen star, the buxom Anita Ekberg (the film's title, need it be added, has a double meaning). Dean goes along for the ride, hoping to expand his bankroll during a Las Vegas stopover. The boys are joined by a third traveller, an enormous Great Dane named Mr. Bascomb; along the way, the trio becomes a quartet when pretty Pat Crowley hitches a ride. The finale takes place in Hollywood, naturally, as Jerry wreaks havoc at a film studio which looks suspiciously like Paramount. All reports indicate that Hollywood and Bust was an unhappy shoot, with Jerry Lewis behaving so obstreperously that director Frank Tashlin ordered him off the set and told him to go home until he learned to behave himself; to this day, Lewis cannot bring himself to watch the film. Happily, the animosity between the two stars never comes across on screen, and as a result Hollywood or Bust is a most enjoyable diversion.

4 out of 5 stars Fun but a little creepy.......2007-06-04

I was led to this DVD by a book (How Not to Look Fat), which recommended viewing the first season for tips on walking the runway. After reading the DVD reviews here, I was intrigued enough to give it a try.

I enjoyed cycle 1, but I couldn't help feeling a little queasy by the vitriol spewed by some of the competitors in that little red room and elsewhere. Didn't these women remember they were being taped 24 hours a day? I realize the show was edited for mass appeal, but most of those people were not shown in their best light, so it was hard to care who won in the end. And the judges -- Tara was wonderful, but one judge made me feel like I needed a very hot and soapy bath after every episode. In all, this series was fun (loved when they went to Paris), and I am sorry you can't rent or buy the other seasons.

I was happy for the winner; I'd been rooting for her from the start, but I wonder if her career wasn't as stellar as had been promised. I don't recall seeing her in any fashion magazines in subsequent years.

5 out of 5 stars One of the better reality shows.......2007-05-27

America's Next Top Model is a successful reality TV show because the bulk of the show has the contestants doing different things, and what they do is interesting. Creator and host Tyra Banks is out to prove to the world that modeling isn't just about smiling and looking pretty. She has the girls compete in every possible arena related to modeling - which includes weekly photo shoots, acting, public speaking and publicity appearances, and traversing non English speaking cities alone with nothing more than a map and a dictionary. The show is a crash course in modeling 101, and each week one model fails to pass. Voting is based on competitive challenges and a panel of judges who evaluate the girl's best photo of the week. The weekly photo shoots appear loosely based on past photos taken of Tyra. She relishes making the girls "suffer" the life of a model by freezing on the top of a skyscraper in bikinis in the winter, and suffering with a smile while posing with snakes and other creepy critters. The show gets particularly interesting when the final five contestants are flown to Paris to prove they can make it as European models. The insight into the modeling business is quite appealing as the girls audition with real Parisian clients (called "go-sees") and the final two participate in a real life runway show.

It is entertaining to watch a group of average looking girls transform on film, through training and lots of makeup, into real models. The characters in cycle 1 are so diverse that the interpersonal segments- "life in the house"- are fairly interesting. The final five breaks down into the bible belt vs. Adrian and Elise. Adrian speaks as if she is on heroin, and Elise makes the show because she's actually very intelligent. Elise's educated ranting on the painfully stupid other girls is very entertaining (although despite being smart enough to make it into Med school, she is obviously anorexic). Particularly interesting is the episode when the bible thumping model wanna-be's refuse to pose nude. Cycle 1, lacking the budget, sets, and pizzazz of future cycles of the show, is perhaps the best of all of them. Tyra has yet to go over the top with her challenges (like making the girls pose in drag or as murder victims), and the cast was diverse enough to be appealing to more than 14 year olds. [...]. If you like reality TV, America's Next Top Model Cycle 1 will be a pleasant diversion.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-19

Very interesting...and entertaining. The bikini wax session was a little much...and watching them lying there nude while having their vagina painfully waxed was a little over the top. I don't think the show really cared about the models...they were just trying to make money. The models seemed like nice people and the show was interesting.

4 out of 5 stars ok.......2007-02-25

I channel surf a lot and sometimes i watch the rerun marathons on MTV. What i can't stand is Miss J. So freakin' gay. This guy/girl dresses like a woman with bands in his hair. When he's not on America's Next Top Model he's(or she) is on the E Channel for the fashion police. He criticizes all these female and male celebrities about how bad they dress and he dresses 100 times worse than the celebrities. I'm gay and out of the closet but this Miss J gives gay men a very bad name. Not all gay men are girly or queeny. And seeing Miss J dress like a woman on every show is pathetic. Every time i see him on the show i just want to punch his face in. Bring back Janice Dickenson. Oh yeah. She was too good for the show and left. Thank God! Who wants to sit next to Miss J.

Does it really matter what's true or false in Domino if the movie's so deliriously hard to resist? Tony Scott's dizzying film about his late friend, former model and famous bounty hunter Domino Harvey (1969-2005), is more tribute than biography, riffing on Harvey's action-packed exploits and brief reality-TV celebrity in a fractured, manic style that's so visually over-stimulating that it could throw vulnerable viewers into grand mal seizures. Scott's barrage of audio-visual hyperactivity is ultimately exhausting, and Richard Kelly's fragmented screenplay does nothing to discourage Scott's relentless MTV "style" (and we use that word oh-so-loosely here). And yet, with Keira Knightley so ferociously alluring in the title role, and Mickey Rourke (as her boss and bounty-hunting mentor, Ed Mosbey) serving up a second dose of his Sin City comeback, Domino grabs you by the throat and never lets go. Scott's embrace of nihilism is typically facile but it propels a vision of wretched humanity that pulls you in with train-wreck intensity. The movie's bracing humor also makes fine use of a large supporting cast including Christopher Walken, Jacqueline Bissett, Dabney Coleman, Edgar Ramirez, Mo'Nique, Delroy Lindo, Mena Suvari, Lucy Liu, and former Beverly Hills 90210 stars Ian Ziering and Brian Austin Green (the latter two poking good-sport fun at themselves as "celebrity hostages"). The accidental overdose death of the real Domino (daughter of The Manchurian Candidate star Laurence Harvey) in the summer of 2005 threw a sad shroud of irony over this movie's theatrical release, but for all its reckless indulgence, Domino is a fitting eulogy for a troubled woman whose credo ("Heads you live, tails you die") is reflected in Scott's fictionalized rendition of the dangerous life she lived. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Gripping Storytelling.......2007-09-15

Many reviewers complain that this story parts from reality, which certainly is the case, but then what is the reality of a drug addicted bounty hunter?

All criticism aside regarding fact vs. fiction, this film is both refreshing and gripping in its storytelling. The gritty editing, use of color and music and non-linear plot all work together to make this a solid film. Lots of fine acting too!

4 out of 5 stars HEADS YOU LIVE...TAILS YOU DIE!!!!!!.......2007-09-08

come on this movie was off the chain (great). man i still can't get over all this action. left my heart pounding, and my pulse racing, no doubt. i loved this movie for real, one of the best. so many good actors appeared in this film, but that made it even better. you had kiera knightley, this girl is superbad. in just about every film i've seen her in she dominates, and let's give it up she's one talented female. no doubt. and in domino she's excellent. there's no words for her role in this movie. wonderful job. then we have mickey rourke, this man is very cool. something about that voice of his that makes you watch. that edgar ramirez with that accent, and that dialect man. let's not forget his acting skills. good guy. then we had mo'nique, lucy liu, christopher walken, and delroy lindo. all terrific in this movie. they all brought it to make it the action and suspensful film that it was. a trio of bounty hunters who have a mission to accomplish, things get crazy, people get killed, bullets fly, and things get messy. this is my kind of movie there's violence, danger, and love in the air. the story is well told, and the fact that this is based on reality makes it even better.

5 out of 5 stars Who needs Tarantino..........2007-07-03

Another great, stylish and out-there flick from Tony Scott, the master of visuals and pacing. This is one of the greatest rollercoaster movies ever made, and is so full of energy and ideas its just a joy. Go see this movie!!!

1 out of 5 stars What A Wonderful Opportunity...LOST/WASTED.......2007-06-06

I don't want to denigrate Tony Scott as a terrific and talented guy, but DOMINO is probably one of the 10 worst big-budget films I've seen in a long, long time. The story of Bounty Hunter, Domino Harvey, is a very interesting story. Just achingly full of potential for an excellent writer, director, and EDITOR(s) to make a fantastic movie from.
Some years ago, HBOFilms did a movie based on the life and times of the
USA's first supermodel,Gia Carangi. Angelina Jolie played the lead role in this movie ( the title was GIA ). What a GREAT movie. Genres aside, I do believe that Domino Harvey's story--"rich English girl becomes topnotch bounty hunter"--had this potential. It's too bad it couldn't have been done this way!!!

3 out of 5 stars I have no clue what I just saw..........2007-05-25

If you've read Lord of the Rings or watched the first movie the Fellowship of the Ring, you'd know of the quote "I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve". Substitute the word "you" for the movie Domino and maybe deserve sounds too harsh but that's how it feels to me. There's plenty to like in the film but then it does other things that almost ruin it. I say ruin it because this is one of those kind of films where it's fine as what it is but what could've been kind of goes through your mind.

The film is based on the true story...kinda, as it says in the opening, about Domino Harvey, daughter of actor Lawrence Harvey. She's a bit troubled as she's into anti-anything almost and carries around a pair of nunchukus with which she's quite skilled. She falls in with Ed and Choco, 2 bounty hunters and inexplicably they become stars of a reality tv show. The main issue the 3 have to deal with is 10 million stolen from a hotel owner and plus we have an issue with a Las Vegas as well as the FBI.

While Keira Knightley doesn't exactly scream bad*** bounty hunter, she's actually really great and is able to balance an emotional aspect as well as being a tough-as-nails chick. Normally actors who try to be a bit more adult and aggressive almost look unintentionally funny, like a kid who dresses up as a ninja for Halloween. There's also Mickey Rourke playing off his Sin City comeback as Ed, Christopher Walken as a TV producer and even Ian Ziering and Brian Austin Green as the reality show hosts.

Where the problem hits is with the MTV-style editing. It's like the camera can't sit still for 10 seconds without being jettisoned off somewhere with camera trickery or image fadeouts and it kind of robs certain scenes from any emotional impact. There's 2 things that are often repeated, that of echoed dialogue as well as Domino's mantra of "heads you live, tails you die". Both are fine and don't appear much but you still wish they didn't have it so much. The only real scene that shows off the hyper-kinetic style is a big hotel shootout which easily beats the one in Smokin Aces but not as good as Tony Scott's own True Romance shootout. Oh well, close enough.

The pacing though is nicely handled as there's a lot of story to get through without getting too slow but when the story is filled with double crosses are believed-to-be double crosses, it might make your head confused. There's at least some comic relief provided by the 90210 boys and I always love how Rourke says god**** for some reason. The film as a whole though is strangely accessible like even though you may not like the style of the film, there seems to be enough to make it watchable and most films don't even have that.

If you were expecting anything less from Tony Scott, well that's your own fault. Known for Days of Thunder and Deja Vu, this is the kind of film you'd expect from someone like him: it's frantic, frenetic and maybe a bit schizophrenic but there's something watchable about the whole mess.

I'd already seen Head over Heels on cable (several times), and wanted my own copy. This movie is different, a little kinky, but good, romantic fun for lovers of romantic comedies.

2 out of 5 stars Meh..........2007-03-19

All the beautiful people in this movie --and there are plenty of them-- can't make this movie attractive. "Rear Window" as a comedy is a great idea, but the film is hobbled by a lame screenplay, full of cliches and lacking in laughter, and bad acting. Yes, Freddie Prinze Jr. is very cute, but he can't act to save his life.

5 out of 5 stars US Men's Soccer Team Should Be This Gutsy.......2007-06-12

First, let me state that I'm Greek-American; therefore, I am a soccer nut. Soccer is the original football and, in Europe, it's rarely called soccer - it's called football. The game is 90 minutes with a 15-20 minute halftime. Hands are not used - only the legs, feet, head, and shoulders. There are no downs, no outs, no tangle of bodies. A beef with a ref will get you a yellow card and another beef will get you a red card, meaning you will sit out the next 3 games and your team must play 1 player short. The US Men's team needs to be as gutsy as these women - they kick for goal 50-75% downfield, and their teammates go after that ball. They take 200% more risks than the men - and they're better.

However, the core of this documentary, aside from it being the departure of several members at once because of injuries, age, and "it's time", is their genuine camaraderie, love of the game, and love for one another. They mentor the new players and cheer them on. They truly LIKE each other and you don't see petty rivalry. One demonstration of their feelings for one another is when Mia Hamm lost her older brother to cancer and was with her family when a major game was being played. Every one of her teammates came onto the playing field wearing a black armband as a symbol of their mourning for her loss.

Babies come to soccer practice while their moms are getting back into shape and other team members take care of them. Those who retired, retired at the top. The new team, with still some of the older members, has learned the meaning of friendship from these women. They really do like one another, and that's what makes a good team. In fact, I can't even recall any players ever receiving a yellow or red card, or a foul.

I love European men's soccer and watch it all the time, especially the teams I really like. Men (especially the US Men's team) take heed - you can learn a lot from the US Women's team. THIS is how soccer should be played.

5 out of 5 stars Great inspirational true story! .......2007-01-05

Well-needed, long overdue story, very inspiration to all young people involved in soccer today.

5 out of 5 stars best movie about soccer ever! .......2006-11-04

This is the best movie to show ANYONE how Woman's soccer has evolved! It also shows how the soccer players are really people, not celebrities! It's amazing to see how far they've come as a team and hear many different people talk about different events (the players themselves, coaches, new reporters ect.) I would highly recomend this for anyone!:)

My family really enjoyed this DVD. It was informative and interesting listening to the players perspective of the sport. Our daughter has been playing soccer for the last 14 years and we have followed the U.S. Women's team. We really enjoyed this DVD.

The Lifetime cable channel made TV history with this ambitious, acclaimed original miniseries on the horrifying phenomenon of human trafficking, or sexual slavery. It follows the fictional cases of young women around the world, lured or abducted, sometimes right off the street, into a world of unspeakable brutality--which the filmmakers show in almost overwhelming detail at times. Mira Sorvino and Donald Sutherland star as American government officials bent on exposing and stopping the phenomenon, and both are more than serviceable in their roles. But the revelation is Robert Carlyle, the Scottish star of The Full Monty and Trainspotting, who here is transformed into a ruthless criminal mastermind behind his own trafficking network. Even his Eastern European accent is spot-on and blood-chilling. The supporting cast of women and girls is strong, and in some cases, truly heartbreaking. And while sometimes almost unbearably harsh, the film serves as a reminder this terrible situation still exists and thrives; and told through the characters, is also a well-paced thriller. --A.T. 2 out of 5 stars some fine actors in a script written by hacks.......2007-07-01

Mira Sorvino, Donald Sutherland, Robert Carlyle--solid actors with a history of excellent work to prove it.

My probelm here is with the jerky camera (like watching a car commercial), weak direction and weaker writing.
Is it necessary to show someone shedding tears every ten, fifteen minutes or going on some hysterical jag to keep reminding us how dire the situation is?

(Overacting is no fun to watch. Director's fault, that one.)

Yes, something should be done about the problem of human trafficking, and I hope governments of all nations have had their eyes opened up a bit, but the way things are presented here literally make you cringe.

Flick is abundant with cliches and implausabilities. Good stories are character-driver, as opposed to plot-driven.
So much here is idiotic and lacks credibility. Sorvino's background is absolutely sloppy writing (not to mention lazy) and not needed. Her bickering with her (husband? boyfriend? Not sure) was not only ridiculous, but annoying as hell.

Here she is this U.S. government-trained I.C.E agent, right?--but the (primary) reason she is able to relate to one of the females (who had been abducted in the Check Republic and smuggled into the U.S. and forced into prostitution) is because she, herself, had been molested by her (FAVORITE) uncle years before at age 12.

Come on. (I say by merely Sorvino's agent being a decent human being, with a need to do the right thing, would have taken care of that, without the writers resorting to this contrived background tale that stuck out as such like a sore thumb.)

Not only that, she ALSO happens to be Russian as well (by birth), who was raised in the U.S. (therefore giving her EVEN MORE CREDIBILITY with all these females who had been abducted in various countries overseas).
Also, later on in the film, she passes herself off as a Russian mail-order bride wannabe. Wait a minute. Are you kidding me? ARE YOU SERIOUS? (she does this to go undercover.)

REALLY? Don't you realize you're insulting the viewer?
HOW MUCH RESEARCH DID THESE WRITERS ACTUALLY DO--IS WHAT I'D LIKE TO KNOW.

SPOILER AHEAD:

At some point in the film, one of the victims, having been freed and given protective custody, is being shown her hotel room where she will be staying for a certain duration. While her "protector" Agent Sorvino is chatting on her cell phone, the said female (in protective custody) steps out on the balcony to take in the view below.
Guess what happens next? Said "PROTECTED" female is chilled by a sniper --- to Agent Sorvino's horror and dismay.

Sure. You call this writing? Tell me another fairytale. Better yet, learn your movie cliches (so that you might avoid them when you write your next HBO special, folks.)

This is what I mean by hack writing. And there are so many other situations that reek of cliche and/or WAY TOO FAR-FETCHED and/or SEEN IT BEFORE WAY TOO MANY TIMES in other weak flicks.

I'll end this rant by saying this is not the definitive take on the topic. I hope a real writer with some serious talent writes a screenplay about trafficking in humans, and that a genuinely talented film director handles the reins.

4 out of 5 stars Close, but no cigar.......2007-05-24

This is a good docudrama, but it could have been so much better. First of all, I'm amazed at the reviewers who label this a "brutal" depiction of the slave trade. It's very, very tame. I guess it had to be that way to be shown on TV, but if I can easily imagine more brutal and effective means to this sickening end, I'm sure the professionals involved day in and day out are far worse. Apparantly, these reviewers have never even glimpsed the underbelly of society. (Lucky for them.)

This is a real problem. It was real a thousand years ago, and it will still be real a thousand years hence. If TV producers were as concerned with the reality as they were about staying several yards behind the PC line, "Human Trafficking" might actually have had a modest impact.

There was no problem at all with Sorvino's performance. The acting in general, was very fine. What was needed to propel this movie to greater heights was better music, tighter editing, and a "vision" to coordinate the story-line. I'd love to see Scorsese cut his teeth on a subject like this. So many of his films seem to glorify violence; this could be his chance to turn his mastery of that style to a more noble purpose.

4 out of 5 stars Human Trafficking.......2007-05-16

The story of a world wide human trafficking ring that sucks vunerable girls into its grasp and the struggle of one FBI agent to battle against it.

2 out of 5 stars Donald looks better now than he did when he was younger,.......2007-05-14

this movie is way too long. Not nearly brutal enough, to show how horrific it really is for those children sold into the sex slave business. The lucky ones die fast. Too many excuses are made by all governments that "deal" with this problem. The real problems is the goverments don't care and these children aren't important, because they're not connected or related to some big politician or movie star. Very sad.

5 out of 5 stars Rebound Movie.......2007-09-12

This movie was both heart warming & intriguing. It tells the story of his childhood, his rise as well as his fall to fame, and how he over came his demons & addictions. Never a dull moment, I highly recommend this movie to all basketball buffs as well to anyone who loves to learn about real people & real stories!

5 out of 5 stars For all Don Cheadle Fans.......2007-09-11

I saw this movie when it premiered on HBO years ago. I was impressed with the acting talent of Don Cheadle then, and my admiration for him has increased with his other works. A good movie, especially since it is based on a true story/person. Picture quality is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Rebound.......2007-07-13

Originally aired on HBO and directed by actor Eriq La Salle, the tight, gritty "Rebound" recreates an incredible, little known true story with authentic period detail and a top-flight cast, including James Earl Jones as Earl's college mentor, and Forest Whitaker as an early role model who nurtures Earl's gift. Cheadle makes a magnetic Earl, as you'd expect. "Rebound," which features rampant drug use, is a worthy inspirational drama, but decidedly not for kids.

I have been looking for this movie for the longest, I am glad to get it brand new. I should have looked here first.

Thanks
