50 Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong .......2006-03-28
The above is the famous ad tag for Danielle Darrieux's American debut, noting her enormous popularity in her native France. They were right. THE RAGE OF PARIS is one of the greatest romantic comedy "screwball" films Hollywood made during the 1930's yet is surprisingly little known, probably because fans of the classic romantic comedies tend to stick to the queens of the genre (Colbert, Lombard, Arthur, Loy, etc.) and most of the actresses who made only one romantic comedy are pretty bad at it (ie: Crawford). Danielle Darrieux, on the other hand, is divine! The great French star came to America with much fan-fare to make this movie and went back home to France within months being homesick. It certainly was the American's screen loss because Mme. Darrieux certainly proves she could have been a major rival for Claudette Colbert's throne as the queen of romantic comedies. Danielle is every bit as enchanting here as that other French coquette and unlike Ms. Colbert she does not go for an Americanized personality, retaining a thoroughly French sensibility. Nobody can touch Claudette in this genre as far as I am concerned, but Danielle shows she might have come close. She certainly settled with a very nice consolation prize going back home and becoming the greatest female star in the history of French cinema and still active on the screen today (2002's EIGHT WOMEN) some seventy years after her screen debut!
The Rage of Paris.......2006-03-15
If you enjoy old movies and the innocent fun they provide, then you should enjoy this. It's sweet and funny.
delightful 30s screwball comedy.......2005-11-19
THE RAGE OF PARIS was ingenue Danielle Darrieux's official American film debut following years of being one of the top stars of the French cinema. A delightful film tailor-made for her talents, in which she plays a penniless model, Nicole de Cortillon, looking for work in New York, scooped off the streets by a pair of opportunists and used to ensnare a millionaire. Fine performances from a uniformly-strong cast including 30s screwball stalwarts Mischa Auer and Helen Broderick; and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. as the love interest for Darrieux. And yes, that's a very young Mary Martin in a bit-part. Another fine release from Alpha (taken from a decent-quality print).

Another Good Daniel Craig Performance.......2006-11-24
This is a strange movie indeed. Although it is marred by a story line that is hard to follow, the film is redeemed ultimately by the acting of both Greta Scacchi (Agnes MacDonnell) who at times resembles Emma Thompson and Daniel Craig who plays a character named James Lynchehaun. Much of the action takes place in Ireland in 1896 and indeed is about both love and rage. MacDonnell, a well-to-do restless woman has a torrid but ultimately devastating affair with Lynchehaun, a passionate man beneath her station.
The plot has many strange and unlikely twists and turns; the print-- at least in the DVD I rented-- is almost impossible to read; and the film needed a better editor. On a positive note, however, in addition to the fine acting by Scacchi and Craig, the scenery is exquisitely photographed and a joy to behold.

But business is booming, thanks to a ongoing mob war between two families. This war isn't helped any when hitman Rocco kills three opposing family members, unknowingly witnessed by Louise. To protect Rocco, his brother Alberto (Burt Young) fakes Rocco's death, then starts arranging for him to be moved out of the country. Until then however, Rocco needs somewhere to hide out. And where better then Mario's funeral home?
So 'cousin Albert' comes to stay with Mario. Of course, there are soon problems: Mario fancies Rocco's 'Widow' Maria (Kari Wuhrer), Louise fancies the false beard wearing Rocco, a bord Rocco makes a play for Louise, while Mario tries to woo her back.
Just when you think it can't get any worse, hot-headed Maria lets her temper get the better of her in a big way. So Mario rushes to help her, otherwise she'll need his professional services!

Like any good documentary, Speedo finds layers of meaning beneath its simple, entertaining story. With genuine affection for his subject, filmmaker Jesse Moss aims his camera at the wild and wacky blue-collar life of Ed "Speedo" Jager, a gas-station mechanic from Long Island, New York, who's determined to become the demolition derby champion of America. As he bolts together his latest wreck for demo-track competition, Speedo's raw language and homespun wisdom reveal a man who's uneducated but sharply in tune with his goals, desires, and responsibilities as a father. Moss's camera captures it all, from the volatile aggression of pit-lane competitors to the disapproving wrath of Ed's soon-to-be-ex-wife and punk-rock aspirations of his teenage son, who yearns for a wreck-worthy car of his own. By the time Ed finds a supportive new girlfriend, Speedo reveals a perfect match of family man, good-hearted woman, and the pursuit of happiness on the demo-derby circuit. Without a hint of condescension toward his working-class hero, Moss has crafted a memorable portrait that's purely American and yet universally appealing to optimists of any class. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Winner of audience and jury awards at film festivals across the country, SPEEDO is an original American love story set amidst the dangerous, bare-knuckled world of demolition derby. Hailed as "highly enjoyable" (Variety) and "an instant cult classic" (Film Threat), SPEEDO kicks up the dirt surrounding Ed "Speedo" Jager, one of the nation's top "demo" daredevils. A Long Island garage mechanic by day, the lanky-haired Speedo spends his free time at work, compulsively rebuilding his pieced-together wrecks before each competition: "It's an addiction," he says, "like nitro-methane through your veins." But as a hobby turns into an obsession, Speedo's marriage of twenty years begins to deteriorate like a junkyard Cadillac, which only fuels his raceway rages. Will a developing crush with a female track official finally bring peace to this hell on wheels? With a riveting vérité style, director Jesse Moss compassionately captures Speedo's collisions and confrontations on and off the track during one tumultuous year. From the fiery thrills of the metal monsters in action to the intimate dramas between a dysfunctional family and a budding romance, SPEEDO is what you'd call a high-octane crowd-pleaser!

If only I could give zero.........2006-06-04
I've been burned so I've learned: don't buy indie gay movies - rent them.
This movie, aside from being the reason I lost 2 hours of my life, is a mess. The characters are tired cliches and are poorly portrayed by an amateur cast. As one other review noted, the only 'attractive' guy in the whole cast was the one who was supposed to be the ugly guy the 'hot' one settled for .. add in a truly messy ending that comes from nowhere and adds nothing and you've got a total waste of 104 minutes.
Have the directors never SEEN a romantic comedy? Regurgitating tired stereotypes and cliches on a low budget is something we can all do at any given gay bar on any night of the week.. save the celluloid for things worth seeing more than once.
Lots of Promise, But No Delivery.......2006-01-03
I wanted to like this movie. I ordered the DVD hoping it was a controversial satire on the superficiality of the gay ghetto, as promised. What I got was a mildly amusing comedy, with nowhere near as much punch as I expected from the premise.
There were problems immediately. Although he has a perfect body, John-Michael Lander as Christopher portrays a character so unlikable, it's not possible to warm to him at all, let alone develop an interest in what happens to him as the plot progresses. Some may find him irresistibly attractive, but frankly I wouldn't have given him a second glance no matter how much he masked what a creep he is - perfect abs and all. A bigger problem to me was the character played by David Vincent. The film's premise - the brunt of the "hard-hitting satire" - is the fact that Christopher's boyfriend is supposed to be the opposite of what we've been "conditioned" to find attractive because (gasp!) he doesn't work out in a gym and actually has love handles (horrors!). He also doesn't have a glamorous job (I mean, really, who knows any gay men like that?) and - now here's the most shocking thing I could imagine in a satire on gay values - he sleeps in PAJAMAS! Now I know a few guys in Chelsea who might find this impossible to believe, but despite the love handles and the pajamas, the "out-of-shape, chunky, under-employed geek" turns out to be the most attractive man in the whole film. Somehow I think that some of the people this film was intended for won't quite get that.
I liked what this picture was trying to say - Christopher is shallow, superficial, vain and annoying, and more or less gets what he deserves in the end. It's not his promiscuity that bothers us, but the way he treats his conquests, refusing to ever have a second date, and finding the most ridiculous faults imaginable in each potential suitor. But the telling of the tale just isn't very interesting, or very funny, and if they really wanted to make it a satire, it should have been far more merciless to maintain my interest.
Maybe I'm just old enough to remember when gay men didn't spend all their time in a gym, staring at the mirror to confirm their own beauty. I seem to recall that when I first came out in the early 70's, gym bunnies were few and far between in the gay male community. In those days, you were either skinny, fat or average, and if people judged you by your looks, it was solely on the basis of whether or not you had a pretty face. The main things we used back then to attract people were wit, charm, personality and intelligence, along with keeping ourselves reasonably well groomed. Now all I hear and see everywhere is stats, stats and more stats - numbers for waists, chests, arms, and thighs, together with demands that everyone have a perfect body, perfect clothes and a perfect career, or forget it. I was hoping that this film might raise some serious objections to such values, but when the final credits were rolling I felt I hadn't really seen or heard very much to either provoke meaningful discussion or challenge these attitudes, which is what I expect a good satire to do. Some may find it quite enjoyable, and feel it delivers on its promises, but I was less than satisfied when it was over.
Stereotypical Gay Characters.......2005-11-15
This movie reminded me of the series QAF, with characters that you love to hate. Some of the things they have in common:
Stereotypical gay characters, lead egocentric characters, over the top drama, and typical bar behavior.
In addition this movie adds overbearing gawd-awful music and unrealistic camp in almost every scene.
Why did I give it 2 stars? Even though I thought the confrontational ending was a bit over the top, I liked it. The message got through to the audience. I did ask myself, however, why the confronting person felt that he was morally superior when he himself was still lurking in the bar's dark corners.
Denial of reality all around here but still worth 2 stars for providing us with *some* hope.
Not the worst I have seen.......2005-08-25
I am sure that lots of people will never like this movie becouse of cheap acting and cheap budjet. Charectors very boring I think this movie had lack of the good director and better screen-writer. Don't waste your money and time on this one.
Just plain mean.......2004-11-30
This movie starts out as a romantic comedy and then does a 180 in the last ten minutes. The movie turns into a really bad drama complete with a performance worthy of a true drama queen. The ending is just plain mean to the viewer!

The DVD is 60 minutes (one hour for you retards out there) and it barely shows anything. I thought to myself before buying this, wow, uncensored sex tales with cool bands, thats gonna be awesome. It turns out that there are a bunch of bad bands no one cares about also. If you wanted to see porn, buy a porno, this is really pointless. the only reason i gave it 2 stars is because it had ICP in it. No one needs to spend 8 bucks on this, get it on netflix or something.
