C.S. Lewis's classic novel The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe makes an ambitious and long-awaited leap to the screen in this modern adaptation. It's a CGI-created world laden with all the special effects and visual wizardry modern filmmaking technology can conjure, which is fine so long as the film stays true to the story that Lewis wrote. And while this film is not a literal translation--it really wants to be so much more than just a kids' movie--for the most part it is faithful enough to the story, and whatever faults it has are happily faults of overreaching, and not of holding back. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe tells the story of the four Pevensie children, Lucy, Peter, Edmund, and Susan, and their adventures in the mystical world of Narnia. Sent to the British countryside for their own safety during the blitz of World War II, they discover an entryway into a mystical world through an old wardrobe. Narnia is inhabited by mythical, anthropomorphic creatures suffering under the hundred-year rule of the cruel White Witch (Tilda Swinton, in a standout role). The arrival of the children gives the creatures of Narnia hope for liberation, and all are dragged into the inevitable conflict between evil (the Witch) and good (Aslan the Lion, the Messiah figure, regally voiced by Liam Neeson).

Director (and co-screenwriter) Andrew Adamson, a veteran of the Shrek franchise, knows his way around a fantasy-based adventure story, and he wisely keeps the story moving when it could easily become bogged down and tiresome. Narnia is, of course, a Christian allegory and the symbology is definitely there (as it should be, otherwise it wouldn't be the story Lewis wrote), but audiences aren't knocked over the head with it, and in the hands of another director it could easily have become pedantic. The focus is squarely on the children and their adventures. The four young actors are respectable in their roles, especially considering the size of the project put on their shoulders, but it's the young Georgie Henley as the curious Lucy who stands out. This isn't a film that wildly succeeds, and in the long run it won't have the same impact as the Harry Potter franchise, but it is well done, and kids will get swept up in the adventure. Note: Narnia does contain battle scenes that some parents may consider too violent for younger children. --Dan Vancini

Description

Prepare to enter another world when Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media present C.S. Lewis' timeless and beloved adventure. With the stunningly realistic special effects, you'll experience the exploits of Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter, four siblings who find the world of Narnia through a magical wardrobe while playing a game of "hide-and-seek" at the country estate of a mysterious professor. Once there, the children discover a charming, once peaceful land inhabited by talking beasts, dwarfs, fauns, centaurs, and giants that has been turned into a world of eternal winter by the evil White Witch, Jadis. Aided by the wise and magnificent lion Aslan, the children lead Narnia into a spectacular climactic battle to be free of the Witch's glacial powers forever! Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF FANTASY AND MAGIC!!!.......2007-09-07

how could anyone give this film a low rate. what?? i don't get it. excellent picture i absolutely loved it. it had a huge dose of magic, tons of fantasy, and a tad bit of reality. this is for both children and adults, and very enjoyable by both. the story is great, the whole setup, the animals, everything was beautiful. their imagination really went out of the roof with this one. it had four young children, a magic wardrobe, talking lion, icy witch, the cutest beavers, and just about any other imaginable animal you can think of. it's good against evil, and the prophecy will be fulfilled. if you have not seen it, it is a must see. this story just makes you want more of it. i expected good, but not great. and this sure greatly exceeded my expectations. it's okay to escape reality every now and then. first there was neverland and now there's narnia. it's movies like this that make you wish these place really exsisted. just a short 135 minute escape from the real world.

5 out of 5 stars Well done........2007-09-04

I was hesitant to put too much confidence in this movie, as I have been disappointed by book-to-movie translations in the past. However, this movie was very well done, keeping the points in the movie that the book emphasized. and doing a good job with it. There are no digital effects that look hokey; they are all well done.

I highly suggest all families see this movie. The message of one person laying thier life on the line to save others is strong, especially for kids (and adults) that live in our self-centered world.

Get this movie, and watch it over and over.

5 out of 5 stars A Picturesque Fairy Tale.......2007-08-28

This has all the elements of a classic fairy tale: the entry into another world through the wall of a closet, a witch who was power to freeze everyone, monsters, animal-like warriors, and the like.

Little Lucy finds a magic entrance through the back of a wardrobe. Not surprisingly, her older siblings scoff at her and say that she is living in a little-child's fantasy world. But they soon find out otherwise.

The initially frozen world of Narnia is graphically shown. Imagine living in a world that used to have seasons but is now a world in which winter never ends!

There is irony in this tale. Lucy and her siblings, who had been sent to live with a relative in the countryside in order to avoid the war (the German bombing of British cities) instead find themselves right in the middle of the war going on in Narnia.

The author, Clives Staples Lewis, intended a spiritual application for his tale. The parallel between the deaths of Astlan the Lion for rescuing the people from the power of the witch, and of Jesus Christ for the rescue of the world from Satan, is obvious.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Version of TLTWATW.......2007-07-26

This is an excellent version of "The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe". It is in wide screen format and includes additional scenes. The additional scenes in the battle were very well done, although the scene where Peter skewers a harpy in flight with a spear while riding at a full gallop stretches even this fantasy a bit - but it looked great!
The additional features were also very good. I especially liked the biography of CS Lewis. All in all, this was a wonderful package.

Dakota Fanning--the elfin star of Uptown Girls, The Cat in the Hat, and Man on Fire--trades in her blond locks for a semi-gothic brunette do in Hide and Seek. Fanning plays Emily, a young girl whose mother commits suicide. To help Emily through the trauma, her father David (Robert DeNiro), a psychologist, takes her to an isolated house in upstate New York. But instead of healing, Emily gets dark circles under her eyes, mutilates her favorite doll, and develops an imaginary friend named Charlie. In no time at all, things get spooky and David suspects this imaginary friend isn't so friendly. Hide and Seek owes a lot to The Shining, but whether the creepiness is borrowed or not, there's a decent dose of it (though the twist at the end is unlikely to surprise many viewers). DeNiro does his job with professional gloss, but Fanning carries the movie; she's got the kind of charisma that goes beyond acting ability--that ineffable glow that makes an audience want to watch her. Hide and Seek also features Famke Janssen (X-Men), Elisabeth Shue (Leaving Las Vegas), and the ever-dependable Dylan Baker (Happiness). --Bret Fetzer

Description

Robert De Niro and Dakota Fanning keep pulses pounding and hearts racing in this chilling horror hit about a troubled father and daughter tormented by someone - or something - named Charlie, a malevolent entity who may or may not be "imaginary" but is definitely the stuff nightmares are made of!

3 out of 5 stars JUST ENOUGH TO KEEP YOU INTERESTED!!.......2007-09-08

the best things about this movie is robert de niro, and dakota fanning. de niro, excellent actor, great in all kinds of films, especially mafia films. love him in those. in hide in seek he did what he does, and that was not a disappointment. as for dakota fanning this little girl sure knows how to act better than some adults do. the girls got talent, and she brings it out in all she does. she can be cute, adorable, and smart, but she can also be dark, scary, and weak. beautiful work. the movie overall was good, but it was pretty predictable. but there were some tid bits that you didn't expect, and the ending was pretty good.

2 out of 5 stars Wait! I've seen this before..... a lot!.......2007-08-26

If you've not seen Angel Heart, or Secret Window or Fight Club stop reading. You'll enjoy it.

I figured the whole story out watching the previews. I went to see this movie hoping I was wrong. I wasn't. This "surprising twist" has been done before. Robert Deniro was in Angel Heart. Did he just cash the check without reading this script?

I do applaud Dakota Fanning for doing the creepy child role so well.

2 out of 5 stars Predictable and overall unimpressive.......2007-07-25

Why do people want to watch scary films? What is the reason for the popularity of Horror films? The usual conventional wisdom suggests that it is most often a desire for experiencing heightened evocative sensations in a safe and harm-free environment (the best of both worlds, so to speak). Others will say that they are interested in some `artistic' facet of the film itself. As I have often stated, horror film fans have very high expectations and a demanding threshold for everything from gore to special effects to - lacking a better term - scariness. Those who have been hardcore fans long enough might have already begun to acknowledge the realization that they probably won't be scared by most films out there. However, there are some trade-offs that can be made: good pacing, solid direction, capable writing, original story premise, and failing these - FEMALE NUDITY - which can sometimes offset a lack of gore and flashy special effects. Acting is not usually deemed a critical aspect, but is welcomed when it does indeed come through with solid performances.

One thing I have a fair certainty about is that people generally DON'T watch horror movies just because Hollywood tosses a couple of big names on the marquis. The presence of "A-list" celebrities (an arbitrary, often temporary, and generally meaningless designation) is no substitute for a good plot and lively pacing, or at least capable special effects. But what if the cast is really good, filled with talented and even exceptional actors? As proven by the film HIDE AND SEEK, it still isn't adequate by itself.

The cast features Robert DeNiro and Dakota Fanning in principle roles, with Dylan Baker and Elizabeth Shue and Famke Janssen in supporting roles. Pretty solid performers all. However, the story is easily predictable early on and the film never really generates the kind of suspenseful tension that grips the audience. Although DeNiro is recognized as one of the preeminent actors of his generation, and can play some roles better than anyone else can, his range is more limited than some will admit. Even his talent can be offset when cast in the wrong role and not given the right direction - as is the case in this film. Dakota Fanning was terribly directed in the dismal WAR OF THE WORLDS, and although she does a good job in this film, she can't save it from its unoriginal premise and formulaic structure.

So as not to seem aloof in my observations, I rented this film because the trailer seemed pretty good, and I too like the challenge of finding a Horror film that will make a positive impression. Many of you have indicated that our (yours and my) insights and opinions regarding movies are somewhat parallel and occasionally similar. In this case, you will most likely be unimpressed and somewhat disappointed. Deserves 1 star for misleading trailers which exaggerated its horror value, its bland and lackluster atmosphere, and its completely predictable plot; gets 2 stars for competent production and my own rare generosity.

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Time, Your Money, Your Brain Cells, And Spare Your New Media Room Sofa Two Excruciatingly Misspent Hours Worth Of Wear.......2007-07-10

I can only assume great bulging bags of money were dangled in front of a lot of stars because I can't think a plot this vapid would coax this much talent in on its own strengths. This pretends to be a horror movie, then reveals itself to be a psychological piece, and never once scares, surprises, thrills, or engrosses anyone I personally know who has seen it. It's sadder than it is suspenseful, and in the end such a painful waste of time I was astonished that it ever got made, let alone made with the participation of the big names it lists in a sallow (s-a-l-l-o-w) effort at validation.

So thinly plotted was Hide and Seek that it can be sketched out in haiku form, condensing two irretrievable hours of viewing time to five seconds.

Ready, kiddies?

Mom--tub-based death scene;
Dad and girl move to country;
Playmate---real?---kills lots!

Yep, that's about it, folks....

1 out of 5 stars Hide & Seek? No thanx. I dont want to play.......2007-07-04

Hide and seek is one of the many films that tries (and fails) to emulate films of a much greater value. The over hyped Dakota Fanning is useless throughout the film and has about as much presence as an ice cube in an igloo. Sure Deniro is showing a slightly better persona here than he did in Godsend, but where Godsend had atmosphere, decent chills and plot development and dread throughout, Hide and seek is a bland mish mash of ideas used throughout the horror film library and it does nothing particularly well. Camera angles are either way off the mark or too much in your face. The pace is so slow during the first half of the movie, I actually got up twice to get snacks and to go to the bathroom, having not paused the DVD, and I missed nothing. Slow pacing is fine if you are telling a story or building up care for the characters onscreen by giving us vital information about their lives, but that is not the case in Hide and Seek. With Hide, it just seems to be a way to waste time until the audience starts to question why they decided to watch the movie in the first place. The third quarter involves a lot of warning signs that horror movie veterans were already savvy enough to have figured out in the first 20 minutes of the film. The last quarter of the movie is of course the inevitable finale that is more predictable than Punxatawny Phil. Here the director threw the kitchen sink of horror hijinx at us as if to apologize for our bad treatment in the first 3/4ths of the film. Yet the director still misses the mark in what appears to be a ripoff of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. Deniro does his best work of the film here, and you almost feel bad for him having to take part in such an obvious display of "me too" horror play. The film also has 4 alternate endings that I had absolutely no interest in seeing. I was just glad the movie was finally done when the credits started rolling. All in all, Hide and Seek is a borefest of epic proportions that is bested even by the worst direct to DVD horror shlock. Advice for Deniro: When you sign on to act in a horror movie, do it with people who have a track record of giving us real winners, not stinkers.

Mom--tub-based death scene;
Dad and girl move to country;

Shuhei Morita's 25-minute Kakurenbo (2004), which has received favorable attention on the festival circuit, is a moody film, appropriate for Hallowe'en. In a corner of modern Japan stands an empty, demon-haunted city where children who play hide and seek disappear. Eight children enter its portals one night: Hikora and his friend Yaimao are looking for his lost sister; the other six are looking for excitement--which they find. Daisuke Sajiki's designs for the mechanical-looking monsters and crumbling buildings are striking and effective. But the characters remain ciphers, with no recognizable personalities. Morita, who co-wrote the script, uses long, slow camera moves for mood, but ends almost every scene with a blackout. Kakurenbo feels more like an exercise than a finished work, especially its weightless CG figures and weak ending derived from the Matrix movies. Like Makoto Shinkai's Voices of a Distant Star, Kakurenbo suggests that it's becoming possible to create small, personal CG films in Japan. (Rated 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon

Description

In this beautiful mixture of cutting-edge CGI and traditional animation, a young boy joins a game of hide-and-seek to find his missing sister. Along the way, he encounters grotesque demons and a terrifying fight for his very soul.

4 out of 5 stars Unique Anime based child game.......2007-07-02

This Anime is a little hard to find, but is beautifully done. Was originally shown on Cartoon Network around Halloween of 2005. The Anime itself is based on a game of tag with a supernatural twist. Overall the movie is worth seeing at least once. A great addition to any Anime-lovers library.

However it is not exactly for those with young children, as it deals with themes that may be either scary or slightly adult in nature.

I found it entertaining and its a good blend of artwork and story-telling. A little disappointed with the ending, but its a minor fault in an otherwise decent movie such as this.

5 out of 5 stars Old School Story, New School Style.......2007-01-12

Did you ever read or hear those stories where, whatever it took to defeat a particular monster, the main character just didn't have it? Did you ever wonder whether the monster would eventually be defeated or just fade away as science and reason spread?

Yeah, neither did I, but it feels like that's the antagonist in Kakurenbo: demons who, like any good predator, evolved with their prey. Watching this short but effective tale of literal mechanical monstrosities come to life never fails to leave me creeped out and wondering "what if".

5 out of 5 stars Finally A Succinct, Well Worth-It Anime DVD.......2006-01-04

Kakurenbo is an anime feat--a film that incorporates the latest technology with the richness of Japanese, with some mixed in Chinese, culture.

For those who are actually interested in Japanese cultural nuance and storytelling, stories that leave room for imagination and beautiful artistry, this DVD with TONS of at-length interview and extras is a breath of fresh air from the oversexed, exceedingly lengthy and expensive "filler" anime of recent years.

If you are a fan of Mani-Mani, or even Memories, you will appreciate this DVD--it is a MUST.

If you are a fan of run of the mill, spoon-fed anime chosen by financially coerced and well paid network executives, then you may as well skip it and save up for some other box set.

This is classy anime at it's best.

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2005-12-30

For a 25 miniute short film, I thought it was really good. I loved the graphics, and the story was quite origanal and very provoking. If you hear people complain because it was too short, that the characters had no personalities, that the animation was bad... That is their view, my opinion for such a short film, I thought it was really good. But don't listen to us here, watch it yourself and form your on opinion

5 out of 5 stars Quick Chills and Plenty of Eye-Candy .......2005-12-22

Kakurenbo, like Makoto Shinkai's Voices of a Distant Star, was created by only a few people yet stands a cut above a lot of anime of the same type. It presents unique ideas that would never have been tried by any of the more mass marketed anime. While the emphasis of Kakurenbo is the horror story, it still has plenty to offer outside of that, like stunning visuals, plenty of atmosphere, and a haunting soundtrack that plays well as the story unravels.

Kakurenbo is about eight children who dare each other into playing a game of hide and seek (Kakurenbo) in a city that's become a kind of urban myth among the children. Following specific rules, including following road signs, wearing fox masks, and going in with seven children, will trigger the city into life, or so the myth goes. The children follow these rules down to one, and that is they actually go in with eight. But the city comes to life anyways, and their game turns into a struggle, and all the while one boy attempts to find his lost sister who played the game before him.

The creatures that come to life in this short anime are drawn from Japanese mythology, and are made to fit into a more modern world, giving them a unique appearance that's successfully terrifying. When placed in the dark setting, these monstrosities do their job. And with relish. By the end, once all the monsters, or demons, are revealed, and twists play themselves out, you should be left with a disturbed feeling of horror in you stomach, especially when you realize what lights the city....

This is one of those films that just don't compare that easily with others. It's too different. Yet it's still great and worth the money. The DVD contains more special features than most anime DVDs have, and this makes up for the shortness of the film. Plus, had the film been longer, the effect would have been lost, I think. I'd recommend this to hardcore anime fans who don't mind a little difference from anime to anime.

1 out of 5 stars its just a bad movie...plain and simple.......2007-07-22

if your one of those people who expects whats happening in a movie to be somewhat possible and/or realistic, and for characters in the movie to have at least a shred of common sense as to what to do in the situations at hand, than i would not recommend seeing this movie. it will simply frustrate you to watch the victim continually ruin each chance she has to escape, such as calling her husband rather than the police when she finally gets to a payphone, which apparently took her six hours to get to yet later is revealed to be 100 yards or so from the house, usually i wouldn't include facts like this that give away certain parts, but in this case im just doing you a favor by lowering your expectations, although i do think jennifer tilly plays the psycho role rather well

4 out of 5 stars Not as Bad As It's Made to Be.......2006-07-04

Hide and Seek" is a movie that most people will never see and that's not only because it's now going to be confused with the Robert De Niro-Dakota Fanning film of the same name. The reason I saw this movie was because I'm a huge fan of Vincent Gallo and wanted to see more of his acting work (I've seen his two directorial efforts, Buffalo 66 & The Brown Bunny, and two other films he acted in called Palookaville and The Funeral). I'm not positive, but I think this movie was straight-to-video; I heard someone say that, but it doesn't have the "direct-to-video" feel to it. That's not to say it's not a bad movie, because it kind of is...But, whatever. The movie stars Daryl Hannah and Bruce Greenwood as a happily married couple named Anne and Jack who desparately vie to have a baby. It seems they've succeeded, but the clinic tells them that they're not pregnant. Jack goes on a business trip, leaving Anne alone and in the middle of the night she's kidnapped. When she wakes up, she's handcuffed to a bed in the basement of a house. At first, Anne is confused, not really noticing she's handcuffed and an odd woman named Helen (Jennifer Tilly) is trying to get her to eat. When she starts reacting, Helen's husband Frank (Gallo) comes downstairs and explains she's been kidnapped. Frank then calls Jack and asks for ransom. The latter is merely an excuse to make the movie longer, because Helen reveals that they're holding her to have her baby, so they can take it for themselves. Frank works at the clinic where Anne had a pregnancy test and he forged it and then faked her death so no one would be looking for her. When Jack returns to discover his wife missing/dead he doesn't believe it and goes looking for it, hence...Hide and seek. The plot of the film and Tilly's character owe a lot to the movie "Misery." In that movie, an insane woman takes an injured writer hostage in her house. In this movie, a man takes a pregnant woman hostage for his insane wife. Helen is very childlike and annoying and, we later find out, pretty sadistic. This movie tries for some chills and thrills, but the only thing remotely disturbing is Gallo's demise in the movie. If you are a Gallo fan (and most people aren't), you can feel OK passing this movie up. I am giving it four stars, because it wasn't dull. It did keep me entertained for the 100 minutes, but it was a pretty stupid movie. Why does it never occur to these characters to just adopt? Who does it seem that Helen runs Frank's life? Why does Vincent Gallo look like a hippie? There's a lot of unanswered questions left with us. If you're looking for a movie you're going to enjoy and recommend, I'd see something else. But if you, for some odd reason, have this movie in your house; It's not a complete waste of time.

5 out of 5 stars Horrid thriller!.......2006-06-17

The generated anguish for having a baby, will make a couple break the rules of the ethic or sanity, to get by all their means, this goal. And their immediate objective will be to kidnap a woman at the eve of become a mother, in order to steal her expected creature.

A sensible and awful drama that will not let you disappoint you. Sidney Furie directing , Jennifer Tilly and George Gallo as the desperate couple and Daryl Hanah as the kidnapped pregnant work out in superlative grade.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2005-08-29

not really that scary but the story line was brilliant and thrilling. Dakota fanning is definately the most talented in this movie

5 out of 5 stars Very Underrated Dark Comedy.......2005-07-13

This is a fun movie to watch with your sicko friends. Jennifer Tilly's performance was an absolute scream, and it looks like the actors had a really good time making it.

If you're the kind of person who gets the humor behind obsurd cult movies like Sam Raimi's Evil Dead 2 or Peter Jackson's Dead Alive, you'll probably get a kick out of this one. Don't listen to the humorless simpletons who took this one too seriously and berated it in their reviews for the wrong reasons ("bad acting", etc.) Just because they didn't get it, doesn't mean it's not a great movie!

BTW I can't believe how some people could be dumb enough to sit through this and not figure out that it was *supposed* to be over-the-top. Kinda makes me feel superior somehow! :-)
