William Steig's delightfully fractured fairy tale is the right stuff for this computer-animated adaptation full of verve and wit. Our title character (voiced by Mike Myers) is an agreeable enough ogre who wants to live his days in peace. When the diminutive Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) evicts local fairy-tale creatures (including the now-famous Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and the Gingerbread Man), they settle in the ogre's swamp and Shrek wants answers from Farquaad. A quest of sorts starts for Shrek and his new pal, a talking donkey (Eddie Murphy), where battles have to be won and a princess (Cameron Diaz) must be rescued from a dragon lair in a thrilling action sequence. The story is stronger than most animated fare, but it's the humor that makes Shrek a winner. The PG rating is stretched when Murphy and Myers hit their strides. The mild potty humor is fun enough for 10-year-olds but will never embarrass their parents. Shrek is never as warm and inspired as the Toy Story films, but the realistic computer animation and a rollicking soundtrack keep the entertainment in fine form. Produced by DreamWorks, the film also takes several delicious stabs at its crosstown rival, Disney. --Doug Thomas

The Start of a Great Saga.......2007-08-29
This is the first in a great series of fairy tale parodies! A must buy!
"What kind of knight are you?".......2007-08-18
The answer to the question is that Shrek is one of a kind. Mike Myers is the voice behind the best-known ogre in the movie industry. Shrek lives in a secluded area of the forest, but when Lord Farquaad resolves that all the fairy creatures need to live in this area, Shrek's peace is seriously affected. Thus, he focuses on scaring everyone away, even though at heart he is a big teddy-bear. One day, he sees a regiment from the kingdom of Far Far Away capturing fairies. Lord Farquaad, the leader of the oppressors, thinks that the talking donkey deserves to be incarcerated, but Shrek cannot help himself and rescues the poor thing.
This is not the last Shrek and Farquaad will see of each other. The latter decides that he would like to marry Princess Fiona, but there is a small obstacle in the way. She is held hostage in a castle defended by a fierce dragon and many have succumbed in their rescue attempts. Therefore, Farquaad organizes a tournament to decide who should go to bring back his wife-to-be. You can take a guess as to who the lucky winner is.
This is not your typical fairy tale, and it is definitely intended for an audience a little more mature, but it is an enjoyable one. There is one word that defines this movie to the T: humor. The actors selected to give voice to the characters of Shrek (Myers), Lady Fionna (Cameron Diaz) and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) are perfect for their roles. The writers also did an excellent job in picking the jokes and the funny comments throughout the production are something to cherish.
There is also a wide selection of extra features in the two-disc DVD; including an area designated as Dreamwork Kids that allows you to select you favorite scenes, watch two music videos (Baha Men and Smash Mouth), and play interactive games and trivia. My favorite extra feature was the one that discusses the technical aspects of the animation, because this is one of the most amazing aspects of this film. Nowadays there are many examples of animation of this quality, but when "Shrek" first came out, it was one of a kind. Finally, the music completes the total package, since it blends perfectly with the different parts of the plot and it is catchy and enjoyable. Overall, a great effort that cannot be missed!
Alright Shrek, you and me, bring it on!.......2007-08-02
I've had a bone to pick with Shrek for like, what...6 years now? It's time to settle the score. The Patriarch way!
Shrek is supposed to be a kid's movie. Thus it is filled with bathroom humor and other crude jokes supposed to appeal to a five year old. Also, as with every other "kid's" movie made today, it's filled with jokes only adults would understand. This is what makes the film popular with children as well as adults. This is just wrong though, a lot of these jokes aren't appropriate for children. For example, at the end of this movie, during the credits, an anthropomorphic cat licks it's genitals. This is sick. Having an animal with the attributes of a human lick itself is the same thing as having a human lick itself.
How about the morals this movie teaches. Shrek is a crude, rude, disgusting ogre. A human example of him is that guy that drained your septic that one time and had no qualms about using foul language and farting around you. Or Michael Moore, take your pick. The moral of this story is to see past his grossness and see the good person inside. If it's all the same to you, I don't want my children hanging around with hobos, drug addicts, and trailer trash because this hokey film told them to. In the end of this movie, the princess becomes a disgusting ogre too. So this is supposed to tell my kids, what? That people that look nice on the outside are really disgusting inside? The Shrek generation is going to be so messed up.
I wanted to ignore these grievances, honestly I did. But when they release sequel after sequel, and no matter where I look is Shrek!, I can't hold it in any longer.
I haven't seen the other Shrek films in this series, so I can't review them. I can only imagine how much worse they are however. Shrek 3 apparently has shrek and Fiona having an ogre baby together. Great. Now my kids are going to learn the facts of life from a movie about ogres.
PS: Okay, everybody reading this. I am making this clear-I just coined the phrase, "The Shrek generation." I am going to have this copyrighted. If I ever see a book or movie or documentary, that uses the phrase, "The Shrek Generation" I am going to sue you and demand royalties of some kind.
PPS: This also applies to any variation like, "Generation Shrek" or "Star Shrek: The next Generation"

The lovably ugly green ogre returns with his green bride and furry, hooved friend in Shrek 2. The newlywed Shrek and Princess Fiona are invited to Fiona's former kingdom, Far Far Away, to have the marriage blessed by Fiona's parents--which Shrek thinks is a bad, bad idea, and he's proved right: The parents are horrified by their daughter's transformation into an ogress, a fairy godmother wants her son Prince Charming to win Fiona, and a feline assassin is hired to get Shrek out of the way. The computer animation is more detailed than ever, but it's the acting that make the comedy work--in addition to the return of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, Shrek 2 features the flexible voices of Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins), John Cleese (Monty Python's Flying Circus), Antonio Banderas (Desperado), and Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous) as the gleefully wicked fairy godmother. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
Not fun, but good animation........2007-07-16
I honestly never laughed while watching this movie, maybe a chuckle or two, it isn't really a fun movie, it's more drama than fun.
I felt like I was watching some soap-opera.
Fiona was cool and had a fun attitude in the first movie, here she is too emotional and whines about everything.
Shrek is annoying, self-absorbed and don't care about her feelings.
How in the world could these two be in love with each other?
They argue like little kids and never try to resolve their argues, they just rely on the other to "give in" and accept the other persons complaint.
Or try some magic potion, ask a fairy godmother for help... I mean, come on - Talk it out!
Oh, and add the King who wants to kill Shrek. WHAT?!
The plot of the movie is soooooo bad and it dosen't really feel like they ever solve any problems, rather "cover them up".
"Puss in Boots" is a new character that joins the cast, I feel however he didn't get enough screen time.
He is cool, has attitude and a really hot voice...
So instead of his cool character, we get to see the childish drama between Shrek and Fiona.
The DVD is annoying, the DVD tries to force you to watch 2 trailers - of two movies I've already seen!
They lock out "Menu", "Chapter Skip", so you "shouldn't" aviod the trailers.
By pressing "Title", then choosing "English" again, I did get into the menu, but this shouldn't excist at all. (and this was on the Scandinavian release, so I don't know if this works on the US release)
I mean, it was bad enough when you had to fastforward the trailers on a VHS, I mean, the reason I buy DVD is to GET RID of the trailers in the beginning. Trailers should be a BONUS, not try to lock out people so they can't watch the movie they paid for.
The movie has nice animation though, that is the only reason I watch it. I wish they had skipped out on the modern music and added more original songs to the movie, because I loved the scene where Fairy Godmother sings, great animation and the song is cool. The modern music made the movie feel more like a music-video than a movie.
Equal to or better than the first.......2007-07-03
This movie was very hilarious. It had the same gags as the first one did, but with many more characters and with a much deeper plot.
This time, Shrek and Fiona are married. They get an announcement from "mom and dad." (That being FIONA's mom and dad) that compels them to journey to the land of "Far Far Away..."
Donkey's back, as is Gingey and the whole crew. Here, we meet Puss, Fairy Godmother, Prince Charming and we get a glimpse into Fiona's true heart.... a glimpse that makes Shrek question his own existence. Honestly, this movie is very well done. The animation is sharp and bright. The motivation and the plot are both believable, even amid the backdrop of purest fantasy.
Who is Fiona's true love? It's no secret that, by the end of the movie, we learn that Shrek is just THA MAN! (Or is that THA OGRE?)
I really enjoyed this movie. I think it has something for every age.
Shrek 2: Possibly the Worst Movie in History (and I didn't even see it).......2007-07-02
Shrek 2 is one of the worst movies in world history, possibly the worst ever. The jokes, parodies and gimmicks were boring, dumb and retarded, and I wouldn't even let myself fall asleep to this movie because I wouldn't want to have a dream about it, God forbid--watching it while awake is bad enough.
Oh, btw, I didn't actually even see this movie--I just knew that it was awful, so I was intent on never, ever seeing it as long as I live.
I liked the reviewer who suggested we should lock this film up in a secret government facility and away from the outside world. A better idea might be holding a special witch trial and burning the Master Print at the stake.
Btw, I HATED the first Shrek, which I actually did see, and I already HATE Shrek 3 and Shrek 4-1000, or 4-1,000,000, or however many of these monstrosities they force on us.
The main reason I hate Shrek so much is the ridiculous premise of the movie--that "looks don't matter", it's all about "love" and "character". Yeah, right. As if 99% of everyone on Earth doesn't marry partly for looks and attraction (as long as you're not living under the Taliban or The House of Saud)??? Duh! OF COURSE looks matter, they've mattered since Helen of Troy, Cleopatra, Marie Antoniette, Greta Garbo, Rita Hayworth, right up to Scarlett Johanssen, Julia Roberts, and "the girl next door".
The moronic, retarded, absurd idea that it's somehow "bad" to like women because they're beautiful strikes me as everything that's wrong with America today--this society is all about denying Reality and living a lie, all for the sake of "getting along", and not "offending anyone". I find the idea that feeling thinking human beings should be prevented from being offended or made to "like people" they don't, by force, to be terrifying. It's literally Orwellian.
The fact that millions of Americans fall for this lunacy, this illogic, frightens me. What is this country coming to?
Please, save us from Shrek, the people who make these sick films, and all the other body snatchers running loose.
THE GREATEST!.......2007-06-28
This Shrek production is FABULOUS! You simply can't improve on PERFECTION. The script, the animation, the MUSIC -- all great. Although I'm not a kid, I thoroughly enjoyed the child-like balance of animated characterizations that took me back some years, but an excellent story line, as well. This is a definite Collector's Item. Everyone, young and old and inbetween, should own SHREK 2. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give it a "12"!
Very funny and well composed story line.......2007-06-27
Love this one too although I think the first one is a little better but this one has a tons of fun also. Watched several times.

Fairy tales and contemporary satire collide in Ella Enchanted, based upon the enormously popular young adult novel by Gail Carson Levine. Ella (Anne Hathaway, The Princess Diaries) received an unfortunate fairy gift in her cradle: No matter what anyone tells her to do, she's compelled to obey. Despite this, Ella grows up to be a headstrong young woman who refuses to swoon at the sight of a charming young prince (Hugh Dancy). To get her gift removed, Ella braves a forest packed with ogres, elves, and giants to find her fairy godmother (Vivica A. Fox, Kill Bill, Vol. 1). Much like Shrek, Ella Enchanted is sprinkled with comic modern references; for some, this will make the whimsy too cute, while others will appreciate the snarky jabs. Also featuring Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride), Minnie Driver, Joanna Lumley, Eric Idle, and many others. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Anne Hathaway, the delightful star of THE PRINCESS DIARIES, is Ella in the charming fairy tale adventure ELLA ENCHANTED. On the day of her birth, Ella is given a gift by her Fairy Godmother -- the gift of obedience, which is also a curse. Under no circumstances can Ella refuse anything she is asked to do, no matter how wicked it may be. Tired of being taken advantage of, Ella, with a talking book as her companion, leaves home to find her Fairy Godmother and return her unwanted gift. This simple errand soon turns into an amazing journey filled with ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, elves, and the plotting of Prince Charmont's evil uncle who wants to take over the Crown and rule the kingdom. Bursting with colorful characters, music, wit, and whimsy, ELLA ENCHANTED is a truly enchanting and heartwarming tale that will captivate the entire family.
Customer Reviews:
Cheesy and, well cheesy........2007-09-09
This has almost no redeeming aspects except for the fact that Anne Hathaway is a FABULOUS actress and she makes almost everything at least a teeny bit better. This does the book NO justice whatsoever, and the "Medieval Teen" really pushed it over the edge for me. Disney went too over the top trying to make this a cutesy fairy tale and so they "cutesy"ed it up way too much. And all the good songs they ruined by singing and dancing to them? Not worth it. Girls around 7 [before they read the book and/or are too cynical] might like this movie. But boys of any age, will not.
Total Waste of TIME!!!.......2007-08-17
First of all, I must say that Ella Enchanted has been my favorite book since about the third grade. This movie has nothing in common with this charming and witty story except for some of the same character names. I don't understand why this movie gets any good reviews at all. There is no depth in the plot and Ella is a single-faceted character. The only thing this movie is successful at is turning people off of a wonderful book and kill brain cells. Parents who claim this book is so cute and energetic really must not value their child's intelligence.
Daughter LOVES it.......2007-07-25
My daughter saw this before we bought it and she loves it. She sings and dances during the whole movie, I recommend this movie for any little girl she will enjoy it.
The book is five star, not the movie.......2007-07-25
I like my movies as good as my books and this one fell depressingly short. I had really high hopes for this movie but, I was wrong for it. It doesn't matter, though. After accepting that the movie would never be as good as the book, I shook the thoughts of the book from my mind and decided to see the movie again, without bias. Again, I was disappointed. The script just wasn't good. There was nothing that drew me in and made me feel as though I was experiencing it. I say you save yourself some money and buy a copy of the book. Reading will take about two times more time than watching but you'll get twice the enjoyment out of it.
fun, looney with a point.......2007-06-14
What would life be like if you obeyed literally everything you were told, even accidently, like "spill the beans"? You'd have no choice if someone found out your secret and used it against you. That's the case here, which gives some food for thought, but with lots of silly stuff, a great song and dance by Hathaway, and, of course, a happy ending with a handsome prince. Purely for fun.

Made for a fraction of the cost of Oliver Stone's similarly themed Natural Born Killers, Gregg Araki's The Doom Generation is more persuasively outragous in its cultural satire, scarier in its violence, and more profound in its vision of a hate-fueled, media-drunk America seemingly determined to eat its young and dwell stupidly on their vengeance. Rose McGowan (Scream), James Duval (Nowhere), and Johnathon Schaech (That Thing You Do!) star as a trio of friends (Schaech's character actually being a complete stranger who steps into their car and into their lives one club-hopping night) who end up on a sex-and-crime spree that draws the fixed stare of television coverage. Araki makes a case for their continuing innocence in a society whose anti-outsider malevolence is barely disguised in the media but is quite naked out in the heartland, where a punishing level of bigotry is not unknown. Araki's jokes and techniques are crude yet forceful, and his anger is absolutely clear where Stone's was obscured and overreaching. The climax is among the most shattering and enraged scenes of '90s cinema. The DVD includes cast information, a theatrical trailer, and French and Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Very homoerotic!!!.......2007-08-07
I loved this movie from start to finish. It is a mixture of male nudity and homoeroticitism and a "very different" story of "serial killers" all in one. It is a story of a "het" couple traveling and picking up a hitchhiker that pushes them to their limits emotionally and physically. If you are a James Duvall fan, you will love this movie. It does cast him in a "very different light" and some "nice views" than most of his roles. The acting was very solid and very believable!!! See this movie for yourself. I highly recommend this one!!!!
Really Boring. Dont waste your money.......2007-07-14
The most boring movie I've ever seen. Enough has been said around here. Dont waste your time or money. Supposed to be shocking. It isn't, its just plain.
surprise ending.......2007-06-18
didn't like it, blood didn't look real, i'd pass
I love this film.......2007-05-16
I must first admit that I picked up this film because James Duval is a total stud, but it turned out to be a really good and interesting film.
good cult flick.......2007-05-16
This was a good film although a bit disturbing with the nature of the actors in the movie. I did enjoy the somewhat constant "fear" of the main character being caught and the loss of innocense.

I don't watch many animated features but I did watch Shrek and I thought it was an excellent movie. The actors brought the characters to life and I really liked the movie. In fact we bought the other two Shreks.

A French prisoner of war, Abel Tiffauges ends up in far away East Prussia. He experiences the land and its life as a romantic adventure whether as factotum for the Reichsjagermeister, the Imperial Master Hunter Goering or as the minder of over 400 young men in Kaltenborn Castle.
Description
Black Demons Finally, the seldom seen 1991 zombie film from Umberto Lenzi arrives stateside, uncut, digitally re-mastered, and in English for the very first time. The Black magic rites and powers of Voodoo and the Macumba are used to reanimate the corpses of zombified, revenge-seeking, black slaves. Acting out of retribution, the zombies tear, rip, and bite anyone in their path of vengeance. The Ogre Cheryl, an American author, goes on holiday with her husband and young son to an ancient, cursed Italian villa. Cheryl slowly and shockingly begins to realize that an evil, demon-like creature that haunted her childhood nightmares is real and alive; inhabiting the dark, cavernous cellar of the old mansion they are living in! The Other Hell When a brutal series of murders plague a convent, a priest is brought in to investigate the tragedies. As the remaining nuns become increasingly disturbed, he must wonder if this is the work of a psychopath, or that of the devil. Bruno Mattei, of Hell of the Living Dead and Claudio Fragasso of Zombi 3 unite again to ensure this tale of "nunsploitation" and possession rises above the rest.
