A very enjoyable dvd set. Great matches; excellent interviews and commentary. Unfortunately, it also serves as a reminder of how much more entertaining wrestling used to be--back in the pre-steroid days when guys didn't shave their chests or their armpits.

Mixed reaction..........2007-07-18

I loved the documentary, having grown up in the NWA/WCW Horsemen era (all incarnations). My favorite "stable" was the original: Ole, Arn, Tully, and Ric. Seeing more of Ole on the mic would have been nice, but the full story of the Horsemen is told well. The choice of matches on Disc 2, however, is horrible.

It's also sad to be reminded of how the suits at WCW never really understood the fan appeal of the Horsemen. It's inexplicable. If you didn't already know about him, watch the documentary and see Eric Bischoff at his megalomaniacal, dissembling best.

Paul Roma burns the Horsemen's stale doughboys!.......2007-06-21

A "historical" documentary on this Horsemen DVD seems as endless as Ric Flair's career. Flair and his fellow creaky wrestling comrades, Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard, engage in self congratulatory stories about their questionable antics from another century that occurred both inside and outside the ring. The DVD gives top billing to Flair who, most notoriously today, wrestles at an advanced age and attracts a mocking response from modern audiences when he appears at arenas in his sequined house robes (suitable attire for an old man) accented by an entrance theme from a stale science fiction movie. Flair, Anderson, and Blanchard are just as Has-Been as the "2001" anthem. Finally, a Horseman of much younger vintage and with more true ring athleticism, Paul Roma, rescues the DVD and infuses it with life. Roma stands his ground in the documentary against charges that he was not a team player from molding doughboys Flair and Anderson and their sycophant Triple H. Roma rescued the Horsemen from antiquity in the Nineties and brought both class and renewed audience support to the decaying team. Evidently he did not subscribe to the Horsemen's frat boy rules of conduct, so now they try to punish him with their cheap shots in the documentary. Triple H chimes in as the self proclaimed wrestling "historian" who conveniently forgets that Paul Roma was a solo powerhouse in the ring plus a member of championship tag teams The Young Stallions, Power and Glory, and Pretty Wonderful. During his portion of the interview, Roma responds to the cheap shots with his own observations about his former colleagues that are more accurate and have the targeted power of one of his patented wrestling high kicks. The same can not be said for Flair and Anderson.

Great DVD!!!.......2007-06-02

The main doc. on the dvd is awesome. I recommend this dvd to any wrestling fan, old or young. Also, look for hidden things on the menus, I've found 2 or 3 on the first disc.

`Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti' is an incredible visual document chronicling authentic Haitian Voundoun practices as they've never been viewed by the public-at-large before. Filmed between '47 and '51 by the legendary cult filmmaker and author Maya Deren who was an initiate into these religious practices, her involvement made it possible for her to gain access into its most intimate circles and record songs, rituals and festivals long hidden from the eyes of the unbeliever. The documentary is extraordinary in every way and of immense educational value to anyone in the fields of; comparative religions, anthropology, ethnology, musicology or psychology. 'Divine Horsemen' covers almost every conceivable aspect of the Voundoun experience:

1- Foundational beliefs and the background from which they sprang.
2- Clear explanations of the three Voundoun cults; (Rada, Petro and Congo), their origins and the differences in their practices.
3- Voundoun cosmology, the Deities and their hierarchical positioning.
4- Discussion of the various symbols and signets used to express Voudoun concepts and the different engeries to be released the by Gods.
5- A close up and personal viewing of the rituals, festivals and songs utilized by the various cults to call upon the Deities and the process of possession.
6- Explanations of the various roles acted out by the practitioners and their societal standing.

`Divine Horsemen' is only 52 minutes in length but it packs a lot of information into its allotted time. Definitely not geared for an evening with the family, but certainly an undiscovered gem for those chosen few with an open mind and a receptive heart.

One of the essentials to any library dealing with the realm of the mystical. My Rating: -5 Stars-.

Uraz on Jahil has to battle for control of a headless calf, carry it around a blue flag, and deposit it back in the 'Circle of Justice'... thus signifying that he wins the king's pennant... and remains as the master chapandaz of all Afghanistan... During the tournament, opposing horsemen use their whips to urge on their horses and to hit the rider for the chance to snatch the heavy carcass...

The motion picture turns around five well drawn characters: an angered son eaten up with vanity; a brave father who knew something worse than danger; a nomad woman whose touch defiles; a once loyal servant lusted for an 'unclean woman;' and a wager from the high passes of the East where 'men know how to forge fine weapons and use them well'...

Top 10 movies of all time.......2006-10-04

I had first seen this movie sometime in the mid 80's as a little kid when one of my dad's friends had given it to him. The scenery is simply stunning. I immediately purchased a copy when I found out it was now available in a DVD format. This movie is a true piece of art; it's inspirational and does a wonderful job of portraying the horsemen of Afghanistan. True Northern Afghan culture, tradition, and hospitality is portrayed in this film.
Buzkashi which is a very popular sport among the Turkic people of Afghanistan is represented as accurately as it possibly can. It shows the strong bond a horsemen has with his horse. Heavy weights Jack Palance and Omar Shariff give an outstanding performance. This is an uplifting movie not just about hope, and determination but also the drive to succeed at any cost. After watching this movie you will know why the horse commands so much respect. It forces the viewer to see the beauty of this ancient wonderful sport which is a part of the regions history.

Awesome movie!.......2006-03-22

Like a previous reviewer, this movie impressed me so much that I actually traveled to Afghanistan to experience Afghan culture for myself (pre-Russian invasion). At the time I went (1973) there was only one paved road in the entire country and no rail lines. I entered Afghanistan (via bus) from Iran and spent 10 fascinating days traveling the country then exiting via the Khyber Pass into Pakistan. I just simply fell in love with the country and its people, and wish I could go back. I never would have had this incredible experience if the movie hadn't intrigued me so. The movie plot line is "blah, blah, blah," but the REAL stars are the country's stunning geography and the character of its people. This movie of course was never intended to have any political overtones, but if you want to perhaps better understand Afghanistan and its people, how they look at life and their country, and how they practice their religion--WATCH IT!!

A beautiful adventure.......2003-11-16

This movie, which I saw for the first time in 1971, changed my life forever. From the first moment of the film, I was struck by the stunning Afghan scenery. Over the next three years, I visited Afghanistan three times. It was a fantastic adventure, like a voyage in another time, on another planet. Since then, I have not stopped travelling in this part of the World.

The film is based on Joseph Kessel's (1898 - 1979) novel, "Les Cavaliers," written following his travel throughout Afghanistan in the early 60's. Kessel is, in the tradition of Saint-Exupery, Malraux, Pierre Mac Orlan, and Hemingway, an adventurer, journalist, globetrotter, and great writer, a man who tried to make the novel "the privileged expression" of the "lived" adventure.

The movie, filmed for six months in Afghanistan, and then in Spain, in 1969-1970, was directed by John Frankenheimer. The picture cost $4.5 millions. Screenwriter Dalton Trumbo recognized there was no need to embellish Kessel's fantastic adventure, and faithfully followed the book's story line.

The action takes place on the vast plains around Maimana in the northwest of the country, across the forbidding Hindu Kush, and in Kabul. Although the scenery and characters are timeless, the sight of a high-flying jet during a scene subtly establishes the movie's time period. The drama revolves around the "mad horse," Jahil, with its almost human presence. Uraz (Omar Sharif), son of the great "chapendaz" Tursen (Jack Palance) is to ride Jahil, Tursen's latest prized white stallion, in the great "buzkashi" of the King, in Kabul.

The Afghan national game of "buzkashi" dates back to the time of Ghengis Khan. In this fierce competition, played on the northern steppes by expert horsemen, everything goes. Hundreds of "chapendaz" horsemen independently compete to grab and carry the carcass of a goat or a small calf to the circle of justice, outlined on the field.

If Uraz wins, Jahil is his to keep. How can he not win? "If you cannot win on Jahil, you cannot win on any horse," says Tursen. Uraz, like his father before him, is now the most famous "chapendaz" in the "three (northern) provinces." Nevertheless, his quest for glory seems endless, as an inner demon keeps driving him to surpass both his father and himself. An old lady in the bazaar says of him, "If you wager him for glory, you will lose. If for money, you will win."

At the "buzkashi" in Kabul, Uraz will know defeat. He not only loses the game, but his leg is fractured. His life lesson about pain and hate begins as he returns to Maimana, vanquished, prouder, more resolute, and crazier than ever.

Uraz has the choice of two roads to return to Maimana: the relatively easy road across the terrible Hindu Kush Range, through the Salang Pass, the World's highest pass at 10,000 feet, or the dreadful "old road," running through the Unai and Hajikak passes, both also near 10,000 feet, Bamiyan, followed by more high passes, before finally arriving on the northern steppes. Of course, Uraz chooses the "old road," challenging himself to the limit, in order to redeem himself in his own eyes, and also those of his father. For all his toughness, his father had never traveled that road.

As if the "old road" was not challenge enough, Uraz, whose fractured leg is fast becoming gangrenous, tempts his sais with a pact that involves ownership of the magnificent Jahil.

Following his master, his good "sais" (groom), Mokkhi (David de Keyser), meets with love in the arms of the beautiful "untouchable," Zareh (Leigh Taylor-Young), but also experiences greed, a taste for murder, and a pitiful downfall. Zareh, as beautiful as she is devious, inspires Mokkhi to murder and destruction. She is herself tormented by "the horse": "Do you know, great Prince, what brought me to you that first night?...it was the horse." Along this endless "old road," the trio each confronts the worst in themselves, and arrive at their destination perverted and lost. There is also the mysterious and likable character, Hayatal (Peter Jeffrey) with whom Uraz will eventually continue wandering the steppes.

The stunning cinematography is the result of the collaboration of the disinguished French cinematographer Claude Renoir (of the artistic lineage,) Andre Domage, and James Wong Howe. They give an accurate taste of the beauty of the rugged Afghan country and of its people. In particular, the remarkable sequences of the "buzkashi" of the King, in Kabul, and the flashback of Tursen's "buzkashi" through the great open steppes of the north, are worth the admission by themselves. There are also actual scenes of organized fights between camels, rams, and partridges (the Afghans are big gamblers).

The casting of westerners as principles may seem strange at first, until one remembers that there were neither TV nor movies in Afghanistan, in 1970, and therefore no Afghan actors. Frankenheimer wanted Yves Montand or James Garner for the lead, but learning that he was an expert rider, chose Omar Sarif instead. The "buzkashi" scenes required 25 days of shooting. Of course, Sharif had to appear in some of these scenes, but the "chapandaz," impressed by his superior riding, unobtrusively "chaperoned" him through the most dangerous moments. Omar Sharif gives one of his best, if not the best, performances ever. On the other hand, Jack Palance was not skillful enough to ride in the mayhem of the game, and required an Afghan rider stand-in for these sequences. However, with his both feet on the ground, Palance's presence on the screen is overwhelming. As I traveled through the northern provinces of the country, I must have met two or three Palances, and as many Sharifs. By some extraordinary coincidence, Leigh Taylor-Young also bears a strong resemblance to the now famous "Afghan girl," who appeared on the front cover of the National Geographic Magazine, in 1984. Physically at least, the choices for the leading characters were fortunate.

The renowned French composer Georges Delerue (more than 47 film scores) wrote the music, remarkable in its lyricism and romanticism, which integrates itself perfectly in the film.

"The Horsemen" is a stunning film, inspired by epic adventure and timeless conflicts which, given the present condition in Afghanistan, I am afraid can only now be experienced in an armchair.

I saw this movie in VHS form while living in Singapore. It is truly an amazing and unique story regarding the strong character and will of a father (Jack Palance) and son (Omar Shariff). It is a must for those who study the character and nearly limitless possibilities of man. I put this item on my DVD wish list earlier this year. Finally it is available. I look forward to adding this DVD to my library and being able to enjoy it with friends and family.

For Diehard Biker Film Fans-ONLY!.......2007-07-06

This film suffers the B grade disease: poor production, edited out soundtrack, poor acting, idotic storyline, etc. However, the film should appeal to the classic 60s and 70s drive-in biker film crowd.This film creates the illusion of those classic b biker films, even though this particular film was shot in Sweden back in 1992!!! I understand Davey Allan and the Arrows did the original soundtrack, but due to legal litigation arguments, the soundtrack was pulled! We have some award editin lacking any sound during music scenes. The bottom line is for the one cent I paid for this 85 minute film, it was well worth the money!!!

Not very good, but considering what you can pick it up for, it wasn't a complete waste. There were funny moments, but as a biker myself, I couldn't really appreciate this movie and the idiotic portrayal of all Bikers.

Northern California 1967, Archie also known as Bad Trip is a newly inducted member of a 60's biker gand known as The Cannibals. After stealing a bike from one of the members, Archie is given 30 minutes to escape after which he will be hunted by the gang.

Spike once told me that he had more metal in his body from broken bones then anyone he knew and that he couldn't go through the metal detectors in airports without setting off the alarms. Spike: A Montana Horseman presents Spike as a cowboy and also as a poet - for he wrote two great books and many other pieces as well. There are very few films out there that interview real live cowboys. This one speaks briefly with a fascinating man who really is one of the last living cowboys. Fun and interesting.

It's not that I'm Glenn Ford's greatest fan, but I think he gives one of his finest performances here and is one of the movie's strengths. One doesn't have to be 21 to be a playboy; what he portrays, quite convincingly, is a mature dilletante. Minnelli's direction is typical of his late melodrama period that started with The Bad and the Beautiful. His style is jittery, baroque, and light years away from his airy musicals. The Four Horseman ranks right up there with some of his best later work, like Home From the Hill, Some Came Running, and The Cobweb. He has a particular flair for car scenes which started with his first Gothic, Undercurrent, in 1946. He gets one of the finest performances I've ever seen out of that limited actor, Charles Boyer. His scene with the gifted Paul Lukas where they mourn the deaths of their children is powerful and touching beyond words. My recommendation: SEE THIS GOOD, OLD FASHIONED, REALLY BIG MOVIE. P.S. Vincente Minnelli brought his aspiring "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" to the events of World War II... The new version tries to be 'more' than a war or anti-war film...

The quality of the Argentinean family with its members fighting on both sides (French and German), revealed great nationalism in their habits of thought and expression... They arouse love and ideal even in their attitudes, interests and actions to each others... They put everything at the stake, specifically two important talents, Julio (Glenn Ford) and Heinrich (Karl Boehm), trapped in this entertaining remake of "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse."

Karl Boehm, the ambitious Colonel Heinrich, member of the S.S. envies his cousin's independence... The dinner sequence makes it evident: When Heinrich sees his charming cousin, spending pleasant time with a beautiful woman, he warns General Von Kleig (George Dolenz), not to abuse excessively his rank as Commander of Paris in his own private interest... Decent if you like 30's westerns.......2006-06-17

I confess, I'm an odd egg. A man of 26 who enjoys black and white westerns is just about unheard of, and many of my friends have to be nearly tied down not to beat it out the door when I put something from the Western Classics 50 pack on. Some eventually come around though, and I'm quite glad they don't think me mad anymore. At least not for watching Tex Ritter movies ;) Anyway, there's three of 'em here, and a fistful more on the aforementioned Western Classics 50 pack. "Arizona Days" is the best of the bunch, featuring Tex and his sidekick Grass Hopper as drifters who link up with a travelling stage coach troupe. The obligitory villains burn down the wagons after Tex humiliates them at a show. Tex gets appointed deputy county treasurer and proceeds to make life a little tougher for the bandits, who double as tex cheats. Along the way, the little brother of his love interest gets shot, which kinda shocked me for something made in 1937. Sadly, a big portion of the print is missing, including the vital part where the wagons get burnt. Tex's songs are good. He has a voice that takes a while to aclimate oneself with, but one you do, it's smooth as butter. "Rollin Plains" finds Tex as an undercover Texas Ranger trying to prove the innocence of a land owning preacher framed for murder by the sheep men grazing on his property. Can Tex get the Governor's pardon to the sheriff in time, or will Gospel Moody hang at dawn? "Mystery of the Hooded Horsemen", on the other hand, isn't so hot, with a confusing story about Tex investigating a gang itching to seize control of a lucrative mine. The riders reminded me of Klansmen, and that's not a good thing. The action is pretty subdued in this one, but again, Tex's songs are fine. Want to see Jack Tripper's pop in action? Head over and grab a copy of the Western Classics 50 pack released by Treeline. There's a whole bunch of great stuff in there. Now git!

I bought this one specifically to see "Arizona Days." Unfortunately, this transfer is not only really spotty in both video and audio (I expected that), but it's missing a big chunk of the film, too. Skip this DVD and buy one of the other Tex Ritter DVDs from someone other label.

A good sampling of Tex Ritter B-westerns.......2005-10-02

Katie, bar the door and Annie, get your gun when the sheepmen and cattlemen go to war over the only local watering hole. 1938's Rollin' Plains may still be in the same general mold as Tex Ritter's earlier B-westerns, but there is enough variety here to make it stand out from the crowd.

Tex Lawrence (Ritter) and his fellow Texas Rangers Ananias (Horace Murphy) and Pee Wee (the much-mustachioed Snub Pollard) are headed to Powder Flats, where a local war rages between the cattlemen and sheepmen. The good guys arrive in the aftermath of a major gun battle, making the place look like a ghost town. This leads to some classic comedy in the form of Ananias and Pee Wee exploring the dark, spooky hotel. Tex is all business, though, and he has his work cut out for him when the sheepmen frame John "Gospel" Moody for murder. Gospel owns the land at the center of the whole dispute, and it's up to Tex to clear Gospel's name before the townspeople hang an innocent man and those dirty, rotten sheepmen take his land. Tex ends up using a little psychological warfare this time around, with the help of a cooperative "ghost." You still have a big horse chase across the plains at the very end, but even this ends differently than your standard Tex Ritter B-western.

The film looks great, and the audio quality allows Tex's singing voice to come through loud and clear. Throw in a good, solid plot, some effective comedy bits, and a lovely lady (Harriet Bennet), and you've got one impressive Tex Ritter classic.

Arizona Days (1937) is a little bit different from your usual Tex Ritter B-western. Here, Tex departs from the normal cowboy life, isn't a marshal of some sorts in disguise, and doesn't even wind up in jail for a crime he didn't commit. Tex Malison (Ritter) is tired of chasing dogies all over the range; he would rather sing, and he gets a chance to do just that when he bails out Professor McGill's debt-ridden traveling minstrel show. When a bunch of ornery cowpokes sneak into the first show in Tombstone, Tex adds a little something special to his repertoire - and makes some enemies in the process of Harry Price (Forrest Taylor) and his thugs. Before you can say Wild Bill Hickock, the show's wagons are burning. It doesn't really take a genius to figure out who was behind the fire, and Tex sets out to save the show and bring the bad guys to justice. He lands a job as, of all things, a tax collector; the money's good, the job pits him against Price and his tax-evading fellows, and he gets to stay on the Workman ranch in close proximity to Marjorie Workman (Eleanor Stewart) - and Tex especially likes the sound of that. Price's gang doesn't take kindly to Tex's new duties, and that means trouble is a-brewin.'

Arizona Days is a pretty good film featuring a number of Tex Ritter songs. Salty Holmes' unusual harmonica-playing doesn't do much for me, though. Syd Saylor tags along as Tex's sidekick Claude "Grass" Hopper, but he doesn't serve much of a purpose apart from his funny name. Then there's young Billy Workman, a slightly problematic piece in the film's puzzle. In the end, Arizona Days is nothing all that special, but it is a little different, and that makes it an interesting and enjoyable Tex Ritter classic.

I have to admit I found The Mystery of the Hooded Horsemen disappointing for several reasons. First and foremost is the fact that the print I saw was so dark that I couldn't see what was going on half of the time - and, unfortunately, a good bit of important action takes place at night. The gang of Hooded Horsemen didn't really strike me as master criminals, either. They think they're tough with their hoods and black robes with the skull and crossbones on them, but the big scheme hatched from the mind of the mysterious Boss man seemed to me akin to taking the long way home to ill-gotten booty.

Tex Martin (Ritter) and his pal Stubby (Horace Murphy) are just out riding the range when they come up on one of Tex's old pals; with his dying breath, the poor guy tells Tex it was hooded horsemen what done him in and directs him to a nearby mine. I had to laugh when I saw the sheriff; Earl Dwire, the man usually behind all of the criminal activity in Tex's early pictures, actually plays the sheriff here - and a rather surly one, at that. Tex is determined to get the guys who killed his old friend, so he infiltrates the gang, gets arrested, and then breaks out in order to bring a little vigilante justice to the Old West. There's one little surprise at the end (which is really no surprise at all). By and large, Tex's singing is about the only entertaining thing about this 1937 Grand National release. The lyrics of Ride, Ride, Ride contain more action than the plot of this entire movie.

I met a man who told me he had a large collection of westerns I asked him if he had any of Tex Ritters. His reply was he did`nt rate him as a western star or Roy Rogers, Lash Larue or any of the old Saturday cinema hero`s . I found it difficult to control myself. These were my boyhood hero`s. He only had the major stars James Stewart, Audie Murphy, John Wayne ect. Not that there is anything wrong with these people as they also rate highly in my own collection. But imagine my delight to find this on DVD and to be the first to review it..Don`t expect it to be first class quality as it is not it has scratches, it jumps and in one of the three movies a large piece is missing. But this is how I remember it from those bygone years when I was the front row kid in our local theatre now sadly gone and it is wonderful to see my great hero once again.Any of you who are the right age to remember those days I urge you to buy this DVD and to the people who produced it how about some more. Johnny Mack Brown, Charles Starret, Rocky Lane,Buck Jones and Tim McCOY are names that come to mind.

Description
