1 out of 5 stars Buy the DVD version instead - until Disney re-release it........2007-09-08

Disney will be re-releasing this version as it contains 9 minutes of incorrectly framed footage. In this Blu-ray version people are being decapitated, and not by pirates! For those 9 minutes, the framing is about 12% lower than it should be.

The DVD version is framed 100% correctly - so buy that one until Disney issues a new Blu-ray release of this title.

1 out of 5 stars Buyer beware! Heads lopped off!.......2007-09-05

There is a serious framing problem for 9 minutes of the movie, where the frame is lower than it should be. So you will be looking at groins and torsos instead of full faces.

1 out of 5 stars Misframed for 10 min.......2007-09-03

About 9 or 10 min of this film is framed incorrectly. The sequence in question is the sword fight between Jack Sparrow and Will Turner in the blacksmith's shop. The image is shifted down so at some points the actors are actually delivering dialog with their heads cut off. I would avoid ordering this title until Disney issues a corrected version.

1 out of 5 stars Big framing problem on Blu-ray version.......2007-08-30

Disney made some mistakes on the Blu-ray release and some scenes are misframed. The original film was shot using the Super 35 process (1.85:1) and cut to a 2:35:1 ratio for theaters and home release. Some scenes that required framing at the top of the film image were center cut instead, so heads are cut off, and there are numerous revealing mistakes such as exposed floorboards when they should be fighting on rafters 10 ft off the ground! I would wait for a corrected version.

1 out of 5 stars Problems with Playback.......2007-08-25

I have a Samsung BDP 1000 - in the BD package from Disney you get 2 disks, one special features and the game and the movie itself. The movie is unplayable even with the latest firmware update for the player but strangely the Special features disk is fine. Unfortunately I am returning these 2 disney Pirates BD's

You won't need a bottle of rum to enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, especially if you've experienced the Disneyland theme-park ride that inspired it. There's a galleon's worth of fun in watching Johnny Depp's androgynous performance as Captain Jack Sparrow, a roguish pirate who could pass for the illegitimate spawn of rockers Keith Richards and Chrissie Hynde. Depp gets all the good lines and steals the show, recruiting Orlando Bloom (a blacksmith and expert swordsman) and Keira Knightley (a lovely governor's daughter) on an adventurous quest to recapture the notorious Black Pearl, a ghost ship commandeered by Jack's nemesis Capt. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), a mutineer desperate to reverse the curse that left him and his (literally) skeleton crew in a state of eternal, undead damnation. Director Gore Verbinski (The Ring) repeats the redundant mayhem that marred his debut film Mouse Hunt, but with the writers of Shrek he's made Pirates into a special-effects thrill-ride that plays like a Halloween party on the open seas. Aye, matey, we've come a long way since Jason and the Argonauts! --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2007-09-16

This is the #1 movie of the centry. Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Elizabeth, and every one else are very beleivable characters that you can hitch your emotional wagons to. YO HO A PIRATE'S LIFE FOR ME!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Swashbuckling is back........2007-09-15

I didn't expect much from a movie that was made after an amusement park ride, but I must say I was more than pleasantly surprised. This is one of my favorite movies. It has everything. A great cast, a great story, great action, and wonderful visuals. You'll believe you are back in time and living with cutthroats. But wait there's more, you also have a supernatural element that makes this like Lord of the Rings meets Black Beard the pirate.
The whole idea seems rediculous, but with Johnny Depp as CAPTIAN Jack Sparrow, he makes it all work. Too be fare Orlando Bloom as Will Turner is the actual hero of the story, but without a doubt Depp is the star. The movie would not work without him at such a great level.
Then there is Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann, who is as lovely as she is adventrous. Knightley really is a great actress and her character is essential to the story so she isn't just another pretty girl in an action movie, though undoubtedly she is absolutely beautiful.
I won't go into the story since others here have already, but I will say that if you love pirate movies or action movies or comedies or romance or horror movies, this movie has it all and it's all top notch. This is a must see and one of the best in the decade it was made.

4 out of 5 stars A nice popcorn film.......2007-09-08

The first of the three Pirates movie was a nice summer popcorn film, which recalled not only the Pirates movies of classic Hollywood but also those great George Pal and Ray Harryhausen stop-motion monster epics of a later time. It wasn't until the second movie, when suddenly the filmmakers decided audiences had been taking Pirates seriously, did the story begin to get bogged down in complicated mythologies and convoluted sci-fi goofiness.

4 out of 5 stars sounded like a bad idea.......2007-09-04

This movie was a nice surprise; any movie based on a Disney World ride is automatically suspect, but this one transcends its bizarre inspiration and ends up being a fun action movie, largely due to the strength of the performances of Depp and Rush. Unfortunately, the other actors in the movie are rather bland compared to those two and the movie feels kind of flat when they are not onscreen.

2 out of 5 stars Depp's big payday.......2007-09-04

I really enjoyed Johnny Depp's mid-1990s work, particularly "Ed Wood," "Dead Man" and "Donnie Brasco." Much has been made of his "Keith Richards meets Pepe Le Peu"-inspired riff in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, but the truth is that Depp is clearly slumming here (perhaps deservedly so after two decades of assiduously avoiding the big payday-style blockbuster).

A lot of other good talent is going to waste at the service of these amusement-park ride driven plots, particularly Oscar-winner Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley (who, if she loses more weight, runs the risk of being mistaken for one of the skeletons on Rush's ghost ship).

Intermittently entertaining but ultimately unsatisfying.

Amazon.com essential video

Riding the strange '50s nostalgia wave that swept through America during the late 1970s (caused by TV shows like Happy Days and films like American Graffiti), Grease became not only the word in 1978, but also a box-office smash and a cultural phenomenon. Twenty years later, this entertaining film adaptation of the Broadway musical received another successful theatrical release, which included visual remastering and a shiny new Dolby soundtrack. In this 2002 DVD release, Grease lovers can also now see it in the correct 2:35 to 1 Panavision aspect ratio, and see retrospective interviews with cast members and director Randal Kleiser. All these stylistic touches are essential to the film's success. Without the vibrant colors, unforgettably campy and catchy tunes (like "Greased Lightning," "Summer Nights," and "You're the One That I Want"), and fabulously choreographed, widescreen musical numbers, the film would have to rely on a silly, cliché-filled plot that we've seen hundreds of times. As it is, the episodic story about the romantic dilemmas experienced by a group of graduating high school seniors remains fresh, fun, and incredibly imaginative.

The young, animated cast also deserves a lot of credit, bringing chemistry and energy to otherwise bland material. John Travolta, straight from his success in Saturday Night Fever, knows his sexual star power and struts, swaggers, sings, and dances appropriately, while Olivia Newton-John's portrayal of virgin innocence is the only decent acting she's ever done. And then there's Stockard Channing, spouting sexual double-entendres as Rizzo, the bitchy, raunchy leader of the Pink Ladies, who steals the film from both of its stars. Ignore the sequel at all costs. --Dave McCoy

Description

John Travolta solidified his position as the most versatile and magnetic screen presence of the decade in this film version of the smash hit play Grease. Recording star Olivia Newton-John made her American film debut as Sandy, Travolta's naive love interest. The impressive supporting cast reads like a "who's who" in this quintessential musical about the fabulous '50s. Grease is not just a nostalgic look at a simpler decade--it's an energetic and exciting musical homage to the age of rock 'n' roll!

4 out of 5 stars Energetic high school musical set in the 1950s.......2007-07-06

Remember those school productions of "Grease" - well this is the film that everyone remembers, based on the long-running Broadway show.

The songs are deliberately cheesy, the acting over the top, the teenagers look about 30, but it's all pretty good fun.

Comparing this to "High School Musical", which has real teenagers one realises that "Grease" is not about teenagers at all but a 1950s that probably never existed. Indeed "Grease" was part of the 1950s nostalgia phenomenon of the 1970s along with "Happy Days" and "American Graffiti" that continued with films such as "Back to the Future" and "Stand By Me" in the 1980s. America was harking back to a kinder, simpler, innocent era post-Vietnam, Civil Rights, and Watergate.

"Grease" still holds up as decent entertainment today.

Some called it a snooze-fest, while others tearfully clutched their Kleenex. In any case, Clint Eastwood was an unusual and (as it turned out) perceptive choice to direct and costar in this lush adaptation of Robert James Waller's phenomenally bestselling novel. Meryl Streep costars as Francesca, the lonely Iowa farmer's wife who is instantly attracted to Robert (Eastwood), the photographer from National Geographic who is in the area to photograph the bridges along Iowa's rural roadways. The two fall in love while Francesca's husband and children are away at a county fair, but the story's passion and lasting appeal derive from their decision to part forever after just a few brief days of intimate connection. Superbly acted with an emphasis on quiet, graceful moments of tender revelation, the film builds to a crescendo of powerful and conflicting emotions. Like David Lean's Brief Encounter (to which it bears marked similarities), The Bridges of Madison County is destined to become one of the classic movie love stories. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful love story.......2007-09-09

When I went to see this movie in the theatre years ago, I was so sure that I wasn't going to like this film. There was a loud rumbling in the romance community about this story being written by a man. At the time there were a lot of them. This one, Message in a Bottle and a Walk to Remember shortly after. So there I was in all my huffy glory, glaring at the screen. But all that nonesense was forgotten as this wonderful story started to unfold. Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep had me smiling and melting in this forbidden love story in no time flat. By the time we reach the scene where Eastwood is standing in the middle of the street during a rain down pour, I was begging her to get out the car. Run, girl. Run to your true soul mate! Ah, amour. So despite my prejudices I fell helplessly in love with this story--and you will too. Highly recommended.

What about'.....Madison County?Who in the world didn't stop to think..this too should be in widescreen..to get the whole pictureSCOPE of this great Romatic future classic.I do have it also on Laser Disc.& it's in widescreen.I just run a print to a blank dvd for now.
Come on you people who sell these movies..if nothing else...put both versions on dvd. They do that you know?

4 out of 5 stars Loved This Movie ,Made Me Cry.......2007-08-25

I wasn't sure I would like this movie since I had already read the book and fell in love with this story.
I'll have to admit Clint Eastwood & Merle Streep did a beautiful job. There were parts that were left out of course but all in all a very good movie, still the book was much better and left me wanting more.

Too bad there cannot be a sequel since both characters are now deceased.

The only part I did not like was the beginning where her children found the story of her love story. I hated the actions of the son or maybe it was the actor.

1 out of 5 stars Crud story, glorifying adultery - disgusting trash.......2007-08-15

This movie makes me sick. Basically it's a movie about a woman who betrays her marriage vows, betrays her husband, betrays her children. It's a movie about a man that commits sin by persuing a sexual relationship with a married woman. The first time I watched this movie (and the last) I found myself hoping the husband would come home and catch the two in the act. He would have been justified in kicking the snot out the filthy no good womanizer. There's no repentance for sin in this movie, no confession of guilt. Heck, for all we know the wicked man gave the married woman a mean case of the herps and then moved on to the next town where he did it all over again (that's the way these people are) How many marriages have been wrecked by this type of thing? And they throw it up on the big screen and package it as a love story? No, it's not a love story. It's a story of human depravity at its worst. If this movie had been advertised as such, I would give it 5 stars for it displays wickedness of unrepentant human hearts in grand fashion. But since this movie tries to pass itself off as a romantic interlude between two lonely adults.. uh uh. It's just horrible, new age agenda laden, anti-christian schlock. Avoid it unless you enjoy throwing up in disgust.

5 out of 5 stars It only takes one love to complete the journey ..........2007-07-22

This review is dedicated to the boy who once slugged his subject line "To the girl who wisely wouldn't date me in the `60s." A road less traveled out of fear for the unknown can seem like your downfall. But, harbor no regrets. In fact there are paths we take to help fill the void. As trite as this may sound, one of those paths can be a great movie. "The Bridges of Madison County" has become both a life-saving tool (a bit dramatic) and an obsession for me. The DVD places its two main characters, brilliantly acted out by Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep, into a state of infinite thoughts that transcend all boundaries. In his novel, Robert James Waller poignantly describes the fuse used to shape a lifetime of bliss in just four days, scenes the DVD expertly portrays and brings to life. Directed by Clint Eastwood, this epic tale is a much-needed time warp to a better place through the eyes of Francesca Johnson and Robert Kincaid, who share a passion for common ground that only comes along once.

4 out of 5 stars Blu-ray improves an ordinary film!!.......2007-09-03

So a film that in standard definition was average at best, is really brought to life and justice is done to it on Blu-ray. The raging battle scene at the end of the film is just awe-inspiring and jaw dropping. A pleasure to watch. Story line was still a bit cheesy, but hey, you aren't buying Pearl Harbour for its stunning war time plot now are you? :P

To call Pearl Harbor a throwback to old-time war movies is something of an understatement. Director Michael Bay's epic take on the bombing that brought the United States into World War II hijacks every war movie situation and cliché (some affectionate, some stale) you've ever seen and gives them a shiny, glossy spin until the whole movie practically gleams. Planes glisten, water sparkles, trees beckon--and Bay's re-creation of the bombing itself, a 30-minute sequence that's tightly choreographed and amazingly photographed, sets the action movie bar up quite a few notches. And in updating the classic war film, Bay and screenwriter Randall Wallace (Braveheart) use that old plot standby, the love triangle--this time, it's between two pilots (Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett) and a nurse (Kate Beckinsale) who find themselves stationed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, during what they thought would be a nice, sunny tour of duty. Then, of course, history intervened.

For the first 90 minutes of the movie, Affleck and Beckinsale find a nice, appealing chemistry that plays on his strengths as a movie star and hers as a serious actress--he gives her glamour, she gives him smarts. Their truncated romance--the beginning of which is told in flashback so we can get right to the point where he has to leave her to go to England--works, thanks to their charm. They're no Kate and Leo from Titanic (a strategy the film strives hard toward), but they're pretty darn adorable in their own right. Hartnett, as the not entirely unwelcome third wheel, squints bravely but makes only a slight dent in the film. Everyone else in Pearl Harbor--from Cuba Gooding Jr.'s brave navy seaman to Jon Voight's able impersonation of FDR--is pretty much a glorified walk-on, taking a backseat to the pyrotechnics and action sequences that keep the three-hour film in fairly constant motion. But when that action does take hold, Pearl Harbor is quite a thrilling ride. --Mark Englehart

Description

History comes alive in the unforgettable epic motion picture PEARL HARBOR, the spectacular blockbuster brought to the screen by Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay. Astounding visual and audio effects put you at the center of the event that changed the world -- that early Sunday morning in paradise when warplanes screamed across the peaceful skies of Pearl Harbor and jolted America into World War II. This real-life tale of catastrophic defeat, heroic victory, and personal courage focuses on the war's devastating impact on two daring young pilots, Ben Affleck (ARMAGEDDON) and Josh Hartnet (BLACK HAWK DOWN), and a beautiful, dedicated nurse, Kate Beckinsale (SERENDIPITY). PEARL HARBOR is extraordinary moviemaking -- a breathtaking reenactment of the "date which will live in infamy" and a heartfelt tribute to the men and women who lived it.

4 out of 5 stars HOW MUCH YOU LIKE THIS MOVIE DEPENDS ON HOW YOU LOOK AT IT!.......2007-09-17

I think the negative reviews of this movie are a little harsh. This movie deserves 3 1/4 stars, but because of all the bad reviews I gave it a 4 star rating as the DVD release is quite good. I do not think this is a fastastic movie, but it is not all that bad either. It depends on how you look at it. The story starts like a cheap five & dime romance novel, but this is to give us some characters to care about. Well.....we end up caring, but not about the character's as much as what these sneaky M.F.er's did to us! These kind of movies really make Americans mad and by the time the attack on Pearl Harbor was over I was ready to go bomb these M.F.er's myself! I guess this is why they show the American's first strike back at the Japanese....to give us some redemption in this picture.....It wasn't enough for me and I would have liked to see them dropping the big ones on these sneaky S O B's! It's no masterpiece, but it is a pretty good movie once it gets going with some excellent special effects. After watching the movie I watched a documentary on the attack(included on the DVD) and I was impressed how accurate the war scenes in the movie were done. The 2 disc 60th ann. set is very good with an excellent transfer and many extras. Try to keep and open mind and remember, it's not a documentary, it's a movie!

1 out of 5 stars Terrible, just terrible...........2007-09-08

No wonder almost half the reviewers here gave this flick 3 stars or less...
Shallow plot, way over romanced, and farfetched (how on earth could the fighter pilots have gone to bombers - carrier bombers at that - in that kind of timeframe is beyond me. This includes a stint fighting alongside the RAF in England).
This movie rates with "U-571" on an accuracy level.
It also does no justice to the two pilots Taylor and Welch (real guys who fought at Pearl Harbor) which is a real shame.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely the WORST war movie ever made. .......2007-09-06

This thing is utter and complete garbage from beginning to end. It has absolutely NO historical accuracy whatsoever except that the Japanese did in fact speak Japanese. Other than that, pretty much everything's pure poorly researched fantasy. This is not only a terrible waste of time and money, the fictional story it tells isn't any good either. It's rubish.

1 out of 5 stars If the WHOLE movie was just a black screen with no sound, it would have been a better movie.......2007-08-10

This film contains everything and only everything that's wrong with America today:

Glaring discrimination in favor of attractive people.
All the "heroes" are astonishingly attractive men and women. While I don't have anything against attractive men and women, it's just so obvious that that's the reason why they were chosen for those roles. The real heroes in Pearl Harbor didn't come from Entertainment Magazine. They were made of common clay. Some maybe attractive, some maybe not so attractive.

Not history so much as propoganda:
They make it seem like before Pearl Harbor America was the only reason Britain was still standing on two feet. Sort of like America was fighting the war before it started fighting the war. Now I'm an American and am proud of our nation's accomplishments, but I'm not proud of the distorted image of history that this movie falsely suggests. There were indeed some American pilots who volunteered to help Britain before Pearl Harbor. But these were few and far between. Like every other nation, America was in it to advance its own interests. And that involved squeezing Britain by trading British bases in the Caribean in return for giving them some, yes, crucial war supplies.

Nothing original (let me amend that: nothing original that is good).
We've seen this type of love story in the movies so many times and it has been done oh so much better. Even though they're attractive, it's ironic that the bad chemistry makes it just painful to watch.

Off the top of my head, I can think of one movie that I dislike about as much as this one: Armageddon. But at least Armageddon knew that it wasn't portraying reality and didn't expect its audience to think it reflected reality.

Simply dreadful.

1 out of 5 stars Stick to Transforming Robots Mr. Bay...........2007-08-06

What a awful disgrace of history on film. To take one of the most tragic days in American history and distill it down to a tepid romance is shameful. Just because a film is 3hrs. plus doesn't make it a epic and the miscalculation to spend the first third of the movie away from Hawaii is just bad storytelling. Why not begin with the men on the ships and get to know some real characters that we actually care about instead of some cheesy 3way love triangle, that way when the terrible attack occurs we feel real sympathy for the men instead of blasting us with mind numbing sound and effects. This could have been a great film about a important day if Spielberg or Cameron had done it. The finished film here will be remembered only as a national embarrassment.

Grease

Grease 2
Too often, sequels to popular films simply rehash the original film; call it the carbon-copy syndrome. Grease 2 suffers from no such malady, having almost nothing to do with the original film. Sure, it focuses on teens at Rydell High, the imaginary school from the first film, which starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. But other than a few of the teachers, all of the characters are new and so are the songs--and more's the pity. By the time Grease hit the big screen, it already had had almost a decade as a theatrical musical, more than enough time to hone its mock-rock & roll score. But this sequel, which stars among others a then-unknown Michelle Pfeiffer, Maxwell Caulfield, and Lorna Luft (Judy Garland's daughter), has music that's neither fish nor fowl, neither rock nor Broadway. Meanwhile, the plot is a reversal of the first film, in which a cool guy fell for a square girl. In this one, the square is newcomer Caulfield, who catches the eye of tough girl Pfeiffer and her Pink Lady gang. The appearance of such pseudo-stars of the '50s, like Tab Hunter, is supposed to lend a nostalgic kick, but let's just say that Grease 2 slides almost instantly into obscurity. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars Grease, Great, Grease 3, not so . . . .......2007-07-31

Excellent digital sound and remastered videoes. Crisp, sharp, a pleasure to watch and listen. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in "Grease" were at the top of their game, dancing, singing, romancing. Fun!

The other actors in Grease gave steller performances, and in most instances, they still do in movies and TV shows.

However, "Grease 2" didn't capture the magic of "Grease." A mediocre film, with mediocre . . . well, you get the idea.

5 out of 5 stars We Go Together 2 DVD-Pack (Grease/Grease 2 ).......2007-05-26

I already have the United Kingdom DVD's of Grease and Grease 2 but when I saw them as a two-pack I thought I must get them as Grease is a different version than the UK one.

Grease is one of my favourite musical films ever which was released in 1978. I love Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta and the love story storyline and of course the fantastic soundtrack including Summer Nights, You're The One That I Want, Sandy and Greased Lightnin'. It brings back so many fantastic memories of my childhood as I was only [...]at the time.

Grease 2 was released in 1982 and all though it is not up to the standard of the Grease storyline it is a great movie in it's own right and didn't get the recognition it deserved. Maxwell Caulfield, Michelle Pfeiffer and Adrian Zmed star in this very funny love story. It has a great soundtrack with songs such as Reproduction and We'll Be Together.

If you like musical films then Grease and Grease 2 are the ones you should have in your DVD collection. Also the soundtracks to Grease and Grease 2 are a must have for your CD collection to.

The Fox and the Hound marked the last collaboration between Disney's older artists, including three of the "Nine Old Men" (Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, and Woolie Reitherman), and the young animators who would make the record-breaking films of the '90s. Based on a book by Daniel P. Mannix, the film tells the story of a bloodhound puppy and a fox kit who begin as friends but are forced to become enemies. Tod and Copper barely establish their friendship before Copper begins his training as hunting dog. Unfortunately, neither character develops much of a personality, which makes it difficult to care about them. The screen comes alive near end of the film, when Tod and Copper have to join forces to fight off an enormous bear. It had been years since Disney produced a sequence with this kind of feral power--and years would pass before they surpassed it. The Fox and the Hound ranks as one of the studio's lesser efforts, but it suggests that better films were soon to follow. (Ages 5 and older) --Charles Solomon

4 out of 5 stars Good movie, but watch some of the messages.......2007-07-21

This movie as the ingredients, conflict/challenge and overcoming the odd friendship between a fox and a hound. I thought they demonstrated it quite well with a well written story. However, my daughter isn't old enough to ask questions, and I'm concerned that I have to explain why people would hunt or kill something so sweet as a fox or other animals. Maybe it's not a big deal, but not sure I want her to see it for awhile.

3 out of 5 stars Sad Movie.......2007-07-09

I like this movie, but I don't love it. I thought it sounded horrible that Tod and Copper weren't suppose to be friends. It hurts when you want to be somebody's friend but can't. It turned out that Widow Tweed had no right to keep a fox like Tod for a pet and had to make him live in the forest, although Amos Slade still wanted to shoot him. The only happy moment in this movie was when Tod found a relationship with Vixey.

I also want to add that it sounded more than appropriate for Jack Albertson to provide Slade's voice because Slade almost looked like Jack Albertson himself.

5 out of 5 stars AMIGOS PARA SIEMPRE!!.......2007-06-30

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming.......2007-06-08

The Fox And The Hound is a charming story about two friends who should be enemys. This is a movie for the whole family to enjoy. Everyone should see it. One of Disney's best.

5 out of 5 stars Remembering What I Never Knew.......2007-04-11

I know I saw The Fox and The Hound back in the day. I even sorta could conjure up the plot outline, if hazy around the edges. Seeing it again made me realize, this is a great family movie. The animation is classic, and the story is without fail. I am so glad we bought it, so we can see it again and again. Thanks to Disney for reaching into the vault to bring us this gem.

It's not too surprising that Shag flopped on its 1989 release but found a devoted cult following on cable TV and home video. This featherweight comedy looked like a waste of space on the big screen, but it plays very cozily on the tube, where it lends itself to popcorn breaks and pajama parties. (The lousy title must have had something to do with the movie's initial failure, a problem worsened by the film being marketed as Shag: The Movie, a truly dumb idea.) Shag is in the tradition of Spring Break pictures, a thoroughly formulaic stroll through the conventions of the minigenre: beachside romance, a wild party, one tender deflowering, and lots of rock & roll. The time is 1963, as three gal friends trick their soon-to-be-married pal (Phoebe Cates) into one final all-girl fling in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Cates is engaged to a local well-bred stick (Tyrone Power Jr.), but soon she's tempted by a beach boy (Robert Rusler) bound for Yale (mm-hmm). The so-so material is buoyed by lovely Annabeth Gish, as the supposedly pudgy one in the group, and Bridget Fonda, as a prematurely sophisticated sexpot. After a while it's easy enough to relax and enjoy the girls' breezy adventures, which are served up without the soap opera melodrama of the similarly tooled Where the Boys Are. Oh, and Austin Powers notwithstanding, the title refers to the dance, not something else. --Robert Horton

Great movie. The movie was based on a weekend at Myrtle Beach. I have visited Myrtle Beach numerous times since I was a small child so I could relate to a weekend with the girls at the beach. That made to movie even more special for me. Loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable........2007-01-31

This is a favorite for my family. We've had to buy it about 3 times due to others borrowing the move and never returning it. It takes place in South Carolina which is where I am from. It is a fun movie with good beach music and dancing. Although it's an older movie, it's still a great one.

1 out of 5 stars 1 star for the DVD, five stars for the VHS!.......2006-10-02

I guess I was lucky enough to get my hands on a VHS copy of this movie with the original music, which did not include any Chris Isaak or K.D. Lang songs. If this is a period movie (and it should be), then period music should be used in all the versions. It sounds like they couldn't get legal clearance to use all of the original music for the movie, so they replaced songs like "Another Saturday Night" by Sam Cooke with a song by K.D. Lang, who was probably still in diapers in 1963. That's where the movie took a dive for me in a big way on the DVD version and it only got worse as the movie went on. Other songs were swapped out and music was added in scenes, like at the Carnival and the "Wild Night" scene, where the original version had no music.

Maybe if enough fans of this movie complain, MGM will blow the dust off their checkbook and pay the original artists (or their estates) to get the rights to use their music. Some bonus features would be nice too. The least they could do was to allow 60 Minute Man to finish playing in the credits, like it did on VHS. If you are lucky enough to own an original VHS copy, you'll notice MGM did not run the full credits like you would normally see in a movie, which would include the music credits.

You wouldn't think a movie could look like a Vermeer painting, but Girl with a Pearl Earring is filmed with an amazing range of luminous glows that evoke the Dutch artist's masterworks. Of course, it helps that much of the movie centers on Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation, Ghost World), whose creamy skin and full lips have a luminosity of their own. Johansson plays Griet, a maid in the household of Johannes Vermeer (Colin Firth, Bridget Jones' Diary, Fever Pitch), who finds herself in a web of jealousy, artistic inspiration, and social machinations. Though the pace is slow, Girl with a Pearl Earring genuinely conveys some sense of an artist's process, as well as offering many chaste yet sensual moments between Firth and Johansson. Also featuring Essie Davis as Vermeer's bitter wife and Tom Wilkinson (In the Bedroom) as a wealthy patron with eyes for Griet. --Bret Fetzer

2 out of 5 stars Ugh!.......2007-08-09

I can't imagine watching this movie without having read the book first because the movie explains nothing about what is going on! People, the book is not that long, you didn't have to change so much or leave so many things out!

Scarlett got on my nerves because I felt like she was just an actress not completely into her part. I never bought her as Griet. None of the other characters got enough time to become interesting and so the beauty of the book is really lost.

I would pass on this movie if I were you and just read the book.

2 out of 5 stars Enough, Scarlett, enough!.......2007-05-21

Am I the only person on the planet who's sick of this actress doing this silent-brooding-staring-into-space-or-at-the-floor-routine? Good lord, honey, lighten up. Let me know there's life in there. Is this all she knows how to do? I know this role doesn't call for "perky," but couldn't she give some indication that she has a pulse?

5 out of 5 stars Light emerging from darkness........2007-05-21

In this movie a young woman, Griet, is forced to leave home and find employment as a maid. She finds herself in the home of the painter Vermeer and his family. The setting is 17th century Holland, and the historically authentic sets and brilliant photography relentlessly drive home to the viewer the physical harshness of life in that time. Even people of means must contend with cold and damp, filth, cramped living spaces, and a myriad other sources of physical discomfort.

But the film also explores the emotional suffering of the time through its portrayal of Vermeer's family. We see very little kindness in this family, and plenty of resentment, grief, rage, sadness, and downright meanness. Griet comes from a family which is very poor but which seems to have real affection for her. Settling in with her employers, she must learn to navigate the shoals of the bitterness which surround her. Indeed, the Vermeer family seems to be representative of an age when the currency of power dominated human relationships in a much more obvious and raw fashion than we see today. The world outside Griet's family is one of darkness; grasping, cruelty, and ignorance are accepted modes of behavior.

But Griet does not become overwhelmed by this darkness. Instead, she discovers the paintings of Vermeer. Soon, her mind begins to open up to greater possibilities, and a new sort of consciousness seems to take hold in her. As the movie progresses, she becomes caught up in the growth of her interior vision so much so that the destructive energies of the household cannot distract her from this growth. In this way, she is an embodiment of the paintings themselves, which are very much about light appearing in the midst of darkness, and the power of illumination emerging from physical limitation. The photography mirrors this theme, with shots that are lit in the same manner as Vermeer's paintings. Thus the development of Griet's character, the photography, Vermeer's art, and the dynamics of the family conflict all weave together to create one overriding image: light emerging from darkness.

This movie moves slowly. We watch a young woman's enlightenment taking place against a backdrop of rising tension and hatred which are intensified by her presence. But it is the quality of her spirit more than her physical beauty which causes much of the tension within the family. Johansson convincingly portrays a woman who embodies a luminous, interior beauty-- and it is this that thoroughly captivates the artist Vermeer. A beautiful and awe inspiring film.

5 out of 5 stars A Feast for the Eyes and Ears..........2007-05-19

Visually, Girl with a Pearl Earring is absolutely stunning. Viewing the film on DVD, one could actually watch the entire piece with the sound turned completely off and enjoy it just as much...as has been said many times before; the film is like viewing a Vermeer painting in motion.

Based on the novel by Tracy Chevalier of the same name, the story is a speculative exploration into the identity of the model of the famous Vermeer painting. A young woman from a poor family is forced to seek employment and finds work as a maid in the Vermeer household. A tacit love affair develops between Griet (Scarlett Johansson) and Vermeer (Colin Firth) though in a purely emotional and mental sense, as her appreciation of art, due to Griet's father being a painter, intrigues the master, and he begins to teach her about colour and the delicate skill of mixing paint to achieve just the right shade and depth. I loved the scene where Vermeer asks Griet to tell him the colour of the clouds in the sky. She responds with the answer, "white", to then observe more intently, to answer, "Yellow, blue and grey..." Vermeer is pleased with this answer.

It is no wonder that the film won many awards and was Oscar nominated for art direction, set design and costume design because the historical accuracy and beauty in all three categories is simply astounding.

In fact, viewing the DVD with a good friend, she would comment after a particular scene that she was sure she had seen "that" painting before. Going back over the film, one can almost detect past master works of that time. It would be interesting to investigate this further and possibly connect certain scenes with actual paintings of the period.

The soundtrack composed by Alexandre Desplat, also nominated for many awards including the Oscar for The Queen (2006) and the Golden Globe for The Painted Veil and Girl with a Pearl Earring, is both beautiful and haunting.

In itself, Girl with a Pearl Earring is a true work of art. The time spent and attention to detail certainly showed in the final product.

Director Peter Webber (Hannibal Rising 2007) managed a very young Scarlett Johansson to perform with mature restraint, concentrating on her expression, particularly those wonderful eyes.

An absolute 5 star rating...

So many good reviews, what can I add? Just my own experience

I have never seen a movie whose all intension is to find, capture and portrait the scenes the Dutch masters were made famous for.. Just this makes you play with the movie, similar to kids playing "I see".. The production in this sense is flawless,, and the setting of the epoch is so real.. You can feel the tensions everywhere,, and there is this girl, no instructions whatsoever, but she has the gift and the genius to see what the master is doing and to even correct him!! This is what captivates him.. at the end of the movie, I cannot escape the feeling of contemplation of the Art Collector - as he has the painting in front of him, for his joy only- as he admires the painting.. We are to pass, yet we were given a chance to admire.. what else can you do?
