Paul Newman gives one of the defining performances of his career, and cemented his place as a beautiful-rebel screen icon playing the stubbornly tough and independent title character in Cool Hand Luke. And before he became familiar as a sidekick in 1970s disaster movies (Earthquake and the Airport movies), George Kennedy won an Oscar for playing Dragline, the brutal chain-gang boss who tries to beat loner Luke's cool out of him. It's a classic rebel-against-the-repressive-institution story in the line of One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest or The Shawshank Redemption. Certain moments have become classics--particularly the hardboiled egg-eating contest, and the immortal line (drooled by Strother Martin, as a sadistic redneck prison officer), "What we have here is a failure to communicate." And don't forget, Luke is also the source of the oft-quoted driving ditty, "I don't care if it rains or freezes, long as I have my plastic Jesus, right here on the dashboard of my car..." He is cool, all right. The digital video disc is in anamorphic widescreen and digital stereo. --Jim Emerson

Too Cool!.......2007-09-10
This is a classic movie that I enjoyed very much. It's one you'll watch over and over. YOu must love Paul Newman, he really is cool........
One of my Favorites.......2007-09-09
This, the story of a Southern chain gang in the post-WWII South, is one of my top ten favorite movies. Growing up, it had legendary status in my household. My dad, my brother, and I quoted from it all the time. Even today, I can break into a Strother Martin impersonation ("When a man's mother dies....") that gets my dad laughing. Simply put, this is just about a perfect movie. It contains the classic eating of 50 eggs scene (where, if you didn't get the Jesus symbolism by then, is made pretty obvious). But the car washing scene is pretty classic, too (even if the woman looks more "60s" than the rest of the movie). The script is fantastic, the locations are evocative of the time and place, and the actors all put in great performances. George Kennedy won an Oscar for his turn as the prison fixture, Dragline; and unfortunately, they don't make them like Strother Martin (dead) and Harry Dean Stanton (still acting) anymore. The cast is so good that Joe Don Baker and Dennis Hopper appear, though only on the margins. And as for this movie's star, well, Paul Newman gives his best performance as Luke, who epitomizes the American rebel. Think James Dean goes to prison and you have Cool Hand Luke. It's hard to believe Newman was around 40 when he made this movie. He looks a lot younger. The book the movie is based on was written by an ex-con safecracker, who had served time on a chain gang. The movie certainly has authenticity (even though it was filmed in Stockton, California, not the Deep South). For me, this is Newman's best movie, a great story about a man's self-destructive rebellion against authority.
Cool Hand Luke.......2007-06-27
"Luke" is a work that transformed Newman from movie star to anti-authoritarian folk hero. Clearly the actor was attracted to the dispossessed, in life and in film. His Luke is two things at once: a loser whose drunkenness lands him on a chain gang, but also a tough individualist equipped with personal courage and a defiant spirit. Top-notch support comes from Martin as Luke's wormy nemesis, and Kennedy, who won an Oscar for his turn as Luke's loyal pal, Dragline.
Yet Another Newman Masterpiece!.......2007-06-23
If you haven't seen this film yet, by all means, go out and rent it today! Hell, you might as well purchase it, because it is definitely worth every penny and I promise you won't regret it. It is a true classic and a movie you will want to see over and over again. God knows I must have viewed this one at least a dozen times now. The acting, directing, writing, score, etc... is top notch. Am I the only person out there who constantly poses this question - WHY DONT THEY MAKE FILMS LIKE THIS ANYMORE? Then again, there has never been, nor will there ever be, an actor quite like Paul Newman. And if ever there was a role in which Newman was born to play, this was it! Seriously folks, could you even imagine another actor playing the part of Luke? It's definitely one of his finest performances ever. The man has charm oozing out of every pore in his body.
Along with the outstanding, understated work of Mr. Newman, this film also contains several wonderful performances by a fine supporting cast - George Kennedy (Best Supporting Actor Winner as Dragline), Strother Martin, Robert Donner, Morgan Woodward, Wayne Rogers, Ralph Waite, Harry Dean Stanton, Dennis Hopper and Jo Van Fleet as Luke's mother Arletta. By the way, the scene in which Luke confronts his dying mother Arletta is one of my favorites of all-time. It redefines the word POIGNANT and I can almost guaranty it will melt your heart.
There are so many famous lines and scenes in this movie that make this film completely unforgettable. I have yet to meet one person (male or female) that didn't thoroughly enjoy this film from begining to end. For those of you who haven't seen it yet, you are in for a treat. I still remember the first time I saw this film and how much I enjoyed it. In fact, the very next day I went to the video store (sorry Amazon, you weren't around yet) and immediately purchased it. Trust me folks, this is one EXCEPTIONAL film.
Finally, I think we sometimes forget just how many classic films Paul Newman has been in - "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof", "The Hustler", "Hud", "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", "The Sting", "Abscence of Malice", "The Verdict", "The Color of Money", "Nobody's Fool", etc... etc... etc... The man is a living legend and one hell of a good human being to boot! At 82 years old, he just announced his retirement from acting. I don't know about the rest of you out there, but I for one feel like I am losing an old, dear friend.
A must see.......2007-05-15
This is by far one of the greatest movies of all times. Paul Newman is amazing, the ultimate rebel. Who else would cut the heads off parking meters because "Small town, not much to do in the evenin."

There's no getting around a simple, basic truth: watching Lawrence of Arabia in any home-video format represents a compromise. There's no better way to appreciate this epic biographical adventure than to see it projected in 70 millimeter onto a huge theater screen. That caveat aside, David Lean's masterful "desert classic" is still enjoyable on the small screen, especially if viewed in widescreen format. (If your only option is to view a "pan & scan" version, it's best not to bother; this is a film for which the widescreen format is utterly mandatory.) Peter O'Toole gives a star-making performance as T.E. Lawrence, the eccentric British officer who united the desert tribes of Arabia against the Turks during World War I. Lean orchestrates sweeping battle sequences and breathtaking action, but the film is really about the adventures and trials that transform Lawrence into a legendary man of the desert. Lean traces this transformation on a vast canvas of awesome physicality; no other movie has captured the expanse of the desert with such scope and grandeur. Equally important is the psychology of Lawrence, who remains an enigma even as we grasp his identification with the desert. Perhaps the greatest triumph of this landmark film is that Lean has conveyed the romance, danger, and allure of the desert with such physical and emotional power. It's a film about a man who leads one life but is irresistibly drawn to another, where his greatness and mystery are allowed to flourish in equal measure. --Jeff Shannon

cinematic masterpiece..........2007-09-06
what more can be said about one of the greatest cinematic masterpieces in film history. The kind of film that could never be made today. Peter O'Toole is astonishing, Omar Shariff is mesmerising, Anthony Quinn amazing. The score by Maurice Jarre is legendary. The bigger the screen the better the viewing. There are some cinematic shots here that will literally take your breath away.
Surprising quality.......2007-09-02
The quality of this DVD surprised me. I did not expect such a long movie to come through so clear and sharp when recorded to a single DVD.
there once was Arab glory.......2007-08-21
When I first saw Lawrence of Arabia in 1962 I was 26 years old. I knew very little about the history of WWI or the Arab Middle East. Nonetheless the movie was riveting. Now seeing it again at age 70, with some accumulated knowledge of both subjects, it is truly spellbinding. This has to be one of the greatest films ever; perhaps, the greatest.
Whatever one's political persuasion about the present turbulent Middle East and The West's role in it, one can gain a feeling, an insight into the people and region from this film that simply cannot be depicted in print.
The modern media images we have of Arabs today are as either fat, bloated Saudi royals, ragged street people in a rage, insane suicide bombers, or down-at-heel scrofulous politicians. We hear of a time when there was an Arab "glory" but it is unimaginable given the present sorry state of the Middle East.
It's difficult to conceive of physically fit, courageous, self-reliant Arabs, not merely surviving, but thriving in their natural environs; the vast and unremitting desert. The film imagery of the agile camel rider Omar Sharif and the robust horseman Anthony Quinn is stunning. This is a new perception, that of Arab as athletic, splendid-looking and master of his domain. Sharif as warrior/dreamer and Quinn as warrior/strongman, in the best roles of their lifetimes, will forever change your image of "the Arab."
I've nothing to say about Peter O'Toole's quirky portrayal other than it doesn't interfere enough with the rest of the production to keep this from being the great movie that it is. I think a perfect companion read would be David Pryce-Jones, "The Closed Circle: An Interpretation of The Arabs." HarperCollins 1991.
What, no sub-titles?.......2007-08-20
This was one of my favorite movies years ago, which proves its excellent worth, for there are no women in it! No love interest! And you don't realize it, you don't miss it at all! GREAT movie!
BUT - I won't buy it on DVD unless it has English sub-titles. Otherwise it is of little use to me in my old age! The description of the DVD says nothing about sub-titles; does that mean there are none, or is their lack of mention merely an oversight??
Susan

Think A Summer Place, and you'll probably be humming Max Steiner's wonderfully romantic instrumental theme song, a hand-holding hit in 1959. The movie itself is similarly irresistible, a colorful soap opera about the passions of a pair of dewy-eyed teens and their straying parents. At an island resort in Maine, Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue (the reigning teen idols of the day) fall hard for each other. What they don't know is that her father (Richard Egan) and his mother (Dorothy McGuire), lovers 20 years earlier, have rekindled their affair. Both, inconveniently, have spouses, which is what makes this a soap opera. Lovers of camp will find much to savor in the incredible '50s attitudes, and in the innocence of supervirgin Dee ("Johnny, have you been bad with girls?"). Yet the sincerity of writer-director Delmer Daves, cowriter of An Affair to Remember, comes shining through the corn; and the grown-up affair anticipates The Bridges of Madison County by 30 years. --Robert Horton
Description
Illicit romance take center stage when a wealthy family set off for a summer seaside vacation.
Customer Reviews:
In most 1950s Hollywood flicks, sex is subtext, but in A Summer Place sex stands front and center at rigid attention. .......2007-09-11
Director Dellmar Daves throws together six people bleary-eyed with lust under the roof of a summer guest house in photogenic Maine. The oldsters include badly married Dorothy McGuire, reduced to taking in renters, and Arthur Kennedy, her blue-blooded souse of a husband, who sets the overripe tone by describing Pine Island as "a perverted Garden of Eden where the pine and the salt air seem to act as an aphrodisiac. Into the mix come filthy rich, equally badly married vacationers Richard Egan and his wife, played to dykey perfection by Constance Ford.
Before one can say "old flames," McGuire's gazes longingly out her bedroom window at Egan -- the ex-lifeguard who deflowered her in her teens but was too poor to marry her, now the humpiest research chemist ever to strain the seams of a LaCoste. In no time flat, the old lovers are stealing away to deserted boathouses. "I'm hungry,"McGuire confesses, "for everything that hasn't been." Teen lust has its day, too. When a teen Sandra Dee whines about the "armor-lated bra" and "cast-iron girdle" her mother buys to hide her budding curves, Papa Egan -- with whom Sandra likes to snuggle in bed to confess "naughty" thoughts -- hurls them into the ocean. Mommy Dearest Ford reasserts her authority by commanding Dee, upon arriving at her room in the inn, to "get the disinfectant and clean this bathroom. And don't forget the toilet seat!" But we know what repression breeds, right? Barely after they have been introduced, Dee and Troy Donahue (the innkeepers' pouty glambomb of a son) dive into a tacky soundstage woods to dry-hump. Although Troy and Sandra strike zero romantic sparks, Max Steiner's famous, lilting theme does the trick.
Dee's mother spies on the young couple ("You can't let him think that your kisses come cheap!"), and after the teens spend the night together, she greets her daughter with a waiting doctor, bellowing, "Take off every stitch and let him examine you!" The director zooms in on Dee for big, fat, hissy-fit closeups. "I want my fatha! I want my fatha!" she screams. Yes, doll, we know, but all you're going to get is pregnant by Troy.
The couple finds acceptance with her father and his mother, now married. The chintz moment supreme, the scene that put the Production Code seal of approval on all the heavy breathing that has preceded it, comes when the director cuts from an exterior of Egan and McGuire's spectacular Frank Lloyd Wright love nest to a living room interior where our four stars, cozily domesticated, talk sex and chow down supper on TV trays. (John Waters and David Lynch, take a note.)
Two love stories.......2007-09-08
Great acting, great story of two couples from different generations. Both couples fight societal convention and thus the conflict that plays out so well in this movie. Lots of ocean and beach scenes. Movie features a Frank Loyd Wright home.
Why did I bother........2007-08-30
Having watched this movie many years ago I thought it would be just as good but I found it dated and boring, except for the music.
One Torrid Summer.......2007-08-30
The theme of "A Summer Place," especially when crooned by The Lettermen, has the ability to conjure up images of beaches and sailboats even in the depths of winter. Schmaltzy but pleasing, it perfectly suits a movie which at first glance is the soapiest of soap operas. The 1959 film, based upon the torrid novel of Sloan Wilson, was scandalous because of the topics of adolescent fornication and pregnancy in an era when teenagers were supposed to be innocent. Set in New England, for the most part, "A Summer Place" debuted in the cinema as Calvinist America stood on the brink of cultural and sexual revolution. The book even more than the movie shows the reaction of the new generation to the Manichean attitudes which tended to flow as an undercurrent in American society. Puritanical repression is as different from genuine purity as ice is from fire; when sexuality is rejected because it is considered dirty or unclean, rather than restrained for the sake of love, then a monster is unleashed.
As the Richard Egan character reacts against his wife's disdain of the marriage bed by rekindling passion with his lost love (Dorothy McGuire), two families are ruined and all hell breaks loose. When the adults break the rules, they open up the way for the adolescents to break them, too. And while the grown-ups are able to piece their lives back together again, the youngsters are nearly destroyed. It is one of the films which best show the effects of divorce and remarriage upon the children involved. In the light of the confusion and torment suffered by the two teenagers, played by Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue, the affair embarked upon by Egan and McGuire appears irresponsible rather than romantic, although one cannot help but pity them for their impossible marriages. When people break commitments in order to find happiness and fulfillment, they must be aware of the high price to be paid, and the one to pay it might very probably be an innocent child.
My Wife's Favorite Film; BUT picture quality Flawed.......2007-08-15
Just arrived on DVD. Amazon experience is always wonderful.
My beef is with Warner Brothers; regarding the print. I have ordered a lot of product from Amazon; both in CD's and DVD's and this is the first that came with a flawed picture. NOT Amazon's fault.
On the upper left hand part of the screen you sometimes see what is a red X. Looks like fluff or dirt. Then you see (I think) more dirt. This time like a green piece of fluff on the lens.
I gather this was taken from the VHS version and not cleaned up. Other than that it is everything my wife could desire. We just got back from Carmel and saw all the shooting locations. We loved it!!!

This 1992 black comedy by Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the Back to the Future trilogy) features some of the most eye-popping special effects of the '90s in its story of a narcissistic star (Meryl Streep) who steals the husband (Bruce Willis) of another woman (Goldie Hawn) and continues her rivalry with her even after death. A magic potion keeps both women going despite the punishment of murderous bullets and fatal plunges, and the joke is that even as they rot they remain vain about appearances. Though he's fashioned a one-note movie, Zemeckis gets a lot of mileage out of such impressive sights as Hawn walking around with a hole in her chest the size of a basketball, and Streep--her head and arms twisted 180 degrees--moving like a broken crab. It's weird, it's sick, it's hilarious, and the stars push the whole project to a classy entertainment. Isabella Rossellini is great as a scantily clad witch who sells the immortality brew. The DVD release has a full-screen presentation, optional French and Spanish soundtracks, optional Spanish subtitles, and Dolby sound. --Tom Keogh

I love this movie. It's dark, funny and the the cast is perfect. The storyline is a little out there, but that and the cast is what makes this movie a big hit in my eyes. I'm a huge Meryl Steep fan! I would also reccommend "SheDevil" with Meryl Streep & Roseanne Barr. Another out there storyline, but it's one of "sweet revenge" movies. Thankfully I was able to purchase this movie from Amazon at an awesome price!!
Hilarious.......2007-07-12
This movie was to funny!!!! It's crazy to see what women would do for beauty!!! Meryl Streep, Bruce Willis, and Goldie Hawn, did fantastic jobs in this movie. I loved the part at the end when Goldie slipped on the spray can and they both fell and scattered into pieces at the bottom of the stairs. To funny!!!!!Everything has a price right!!!!LOL!!!
One of a kind movie.......2007-07-02
I loved this movie. I had no idea what this movie was about and had never seen any trailer of it. I was thinking "another Meryl Streep's melodrama"; but this crazy movie tickled my brain and belly through out the play time. This is one of a kind movie with great star cast and they all are very very funny. Buy yourself a copy because you will never get tired of this movie.

As Rumiko Takahashi's "Feudal Fairy Tale" continues, the main storyline about recapturing the fragments of the Shikkon Jewel recedes and shorter adventures come to the fore. At the end of season 3, Inu-Yasha destroyed the magical barrier protecting his enemy Naraku: the evil demon fled, leaving no trail. Naraku's absence allows dozens of minor demons to emerge from hiding and cause problems that Kagome, Sango, Miroku, Shippo, and Inu-Yasha must undo. An eccentric exorcist tangles with Miroku and the imprisoned spirit of a lovely princess; the demon Orchidayu creates fake Shikkon Jewels in an effort to strengthen his servants. Some of the adventures take a comic turn. When Kagome's younger brother develops his first crush on a classmate, he asks Inu-Yasha's advice about how to approach the girl. (Asking the terminally insensitive Inu-Yasha for romantic advice is about as sensible as asking a vegetarian how to cook a pot roast.) A shape-shifting raccoon spirit impersonates Miroku so accurately, he gets the lecherous monk in trouble with the women of two villages. By this point, the characters in Inu-Yasha have become so familiar, their antics feel entertaining even when they don't really advance the plot. Although this package is labelled Fourth Season Box Set, the opening animation and song change after episode 95, suggesting there's some overlap. The Deluxe Edition (ASIN# ) includes a model of Miroku's prayer beads (a Buddhist rosary) in aqua plastic. (Rated Teen: suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon

Amazon full of broken promises! .......2007-09-15
I pre-order Inuyasha Season 4in June 4th. The expected date to arrived was this month (~Sept 7th). I checked the status and Amazon change the delivery for over 1-2 MONTHS later. Then a friend of mine order the same package on Sept 14th and Amazon is advertising the delivering date for "Tuesday, Sep 18 if you order in the next 65 hours and choose one-day shipping." I am so disappointed with amazon, so much about loyalty!!!!!
Its not all that great to me........2007-09-08
I'm not too pleased with this season at all for several glaring reasons. First the amount of episodes. Only 18 episodes for about 70 bucks?! This spits in the face of the fans as far as I'm concerned. The first 3 seasons had at least 25 episodes each. So this is ridiculous. My other gripes is this. All of these kind of felt like throw away episodes. There wasn't one interesting new character hero or villian. Most of the stories weren't very great either. I'll admit some of the romantic episodes were a bit catching. And it did maintain its level of comedy. But what happened to the greatness that blanketed the last 3 seasons? Where was that seriousness?
This season is so formulaic that it begun to drive me mad. Naraku has vanished and every single demon decides to run amok and terrorize villages. It would be cool once in awhile. But this takes place in just about every episode. And they constantly point out the fact that, the demons are revealing themselves because of Naraku's disappearance. If its not that then it was some type of love situation. At least you get another background story on Naraku as Omigumo. Fans of Sesshomaru. You will be disappointed. You won't see too much of him. But you do get a bit of Koga sweating Kagome.
Since I'm a fan of this series, it was a must that I get it. But I'm very disappointed overall. It felt more like a gigantic teaser for the next season. Being that for episode 96 it introduced a new opening featuring new characters. I'll just wait for season 5 to be impressed. I don't buy the volumes. This set contains eps. 82-99 on 4 disk. If you plan on buying this from your local store, don't trash your receipt. I had to take back 2 copies because the first disk was freezing badly. I just want to give a heads up on that.
ALWAYS 5 STARS !!!!!.......2007-08-18
INUYASHA IS ALWAYS 5 STARS !!!!! TO MAKE IT SIMPLE, JUST ANOTHER OUTSTANDING SEASON OF A TRULY GREAT SHOW. THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND STORY LINES ARE EXCELLENT. INUYASHA IS JUST A PLEASURE TO WATCH. I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THIS SHOW. IF YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN THE SHOW START FROM THE FIRST EPISODE AND YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. YOU WILL BECOME A FAN OF THIS SHOW RIGHT AWAY.

Gold stars to all for this taut psychological thriller based on Zoe Heller's novel that that gets more insidiously twisted as it unfolds. Oscar-nominated for her chilling performance, Dame Judi Dench gives a master class as schoolteacher Barbara Covett, a frumpy, friendless, and flinty spinster who lives with her cat. A formidable presence, Barbara is standoffish with colleagues and not one for students to trifle with (not that they'd dare). Cate Blanchett, also an Oscar nominee and winner of several critics society awards for her impassioned performance, costars as Sheba Hart, the new, overwhelmed art teacher who first becomes enthrall to Barbara after she steps in to help Sheba discipline unruly students. Barbara cultivates a friendship, and insinuates herself into Sheba's chaotic life, which includes her older husband (Bill Nighy), teenage daughter, and a son with Down's syndrome. Then, Barbara catches the reckless Sheba in a compromising position with a 15-year-old student (Andrew Simpson). Seizing her opportunity, the calculating Barbara does not turn her in. Rather, she wants to "help" her. "She's the one I've been waiting for," she writes in the journals she meticulously keeps, and which provide, in voiceover, her corrosive commentary. This all sounds very Fatal Attraction, but no boiling rabbits, please; we're British. Philip Glass's Oscar-nominated score accentuates the growing menace. Though there is little in these characters to admire, (one would think GLAAD would have something to say about the predatory turn Barbara's character takes), Notes on a Scandal is a compelling tour-de-force for its Grade-A cast. --Donald Liebenson

Friendship redefined.......2007-09-12
I was looking forward to this film for the sheer treat of having Judy Dench and Cate Blanchett act together. This film is interesting exploration on human relationships, desires and hurt humans are capable on inflicting to each other. We encouter Sheeba, new high school teacher who seems to have it all: she is married, beautiful and artistic with a possibility of starting a new teaching career after staying at home to raise her son. But then, we learn that her life is not a perfect one: she is married to an older man and the intensity of their relationship is wearing off with her. Her teenage daughter has typical teenage problems (boyfriend anyone?), while her son requires constant attention due to his Down Syndrome. In all that pressure, Sheeba succumbs to the seemingly worry free relationship with the high school student - young, handsome and amazingly manipulative. And as these events are unrevelling, Judy Dench's character seems to see an end to her loneliness. Under pretense to be a friend, comforting colleague on her slippery slope of self-destruction, she is naively plotting to lure Sheeba into relationshiop, only to find out that feelings are one sided. And that is here is all falls to pieces. I would say that while seemingly unremarkable, this is a true story of everyday people's lives. It is a true description of all of our transgressions and how easy it is for all of us to find justificaitons for our own actions. Also the moral of the story - if you are looking to confide to anyone, find a good psychotherapist, your friends and colleagues will find a way to "jump" you for all the petty reasons they can come up with should you be foolish enough to confide to them.
Intense and disturbing...........2007-08-22
My husband brought the DVD home with the warning that "Notes on a Scandal" was supposed to be an intense and disturbing film. Disturbing it was indeed, but not in the way I thought it would be. I assumed that a plot involving a teacher's "affair" with a teenage pupil would be overwhelmed by the unsavory aspect of that dangerous liaison. While events do turn upon the sordid, ill-fated dalliance, it is shown to be the unappealing result of mental aberration on the part of Cate Blanchett's character "Sheba." Sheba is drawn into the affair because she is basically undisciplined and used to living a free life, although she has tried to be a devoted mother to the best of her ability. But when boredom and unhappiness overwhelm her, she is bereft of resources.
The other dangerous relationship in the film is the emotional obsession that an older teacher, Babara Covett, magnificently played by Judi Dench, develops over Sheba. It reminded me of a saying of St Francis de Sales: "There are many virgins in hell, but there are no humble people in hell." With all the overemphasis on the physical, we forget that there are other sins besides those of the flesh, and that pride and covetousness can also lead a soul down the primrose path. Barbara's determination to monopolize Sheba's affections is in many ways as insidious and dangerous as any carnal misbehavior.
Barbara (Dench) is a dedicated teacher who with one word can restore order in a classroom. Her amazing competence and intellectual superiority lead her to despise the world. She is a misanthrope worthy of Scrooge, yet the witty and brilliant reflections as recorded in her secret diary are chillingly amusing. Unfortunately, she has a habit of forming inordinate attachments to other, younger women, attachments which she erroneously idealizes as being spiritual friendships. True friendship has little to do with it, however. Barbara resents Sheba's family and when Sheba puts her children first, only then does Barbara report Sheba's criminal actions.
"Notes on a Scandal" is a revealing glimpse into the souls of two women, each narcissistic and possessed by different brands of lust. Rarely has real love been so starkly contrasted with inordinate affections as in director Richard Eyre's modern yet timeless melodrama.
You can't make a good movie with a bad book.......2007-08-21
Well, I haven't read the book, but it's probably airport trash. Barbara "Covett"? Bathsheba "Hart"? Steven "CONnelly"? We're talking Joan Collins level, or a bodice ripper that Fabio is on the cover of. I'm amazed that two great actors would find anything to give of themselves to this exploitative, prurient stupidity. Only in terms of taboo breaking does this film have any impact. Cate Blanchett makes out with a 16 year old, and Judi Dench is a vampiric, creepy, aging lesbian. Both are teachers at an English high school and Dench lures the confused Blanchett into a bizarre relationship using her knowldge of Cate's teen tryst as leverage. I don't know if these actors are stretching their boundaries or naive, or both, but if you like a good train wreck, oh, baby, is this the right flick for you.
JUDI AND CATE MAKE A GREAT TEAM.......2007-08-20
This movie showcases the superb acting talents of Dame Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett. Ms. Dench is very creepy, very convincing as a chronically lonely, manipulative lesbian. I've seen better acting from Cate Blanchett but even her worst acting is better than what you can expect from most actresses. Bill Nighy also turns in a convincing performance as the cuckholded husband.
I did not find this movie shocking in its content or disturbing, although I cannot understand how a grown woman can find a spindly, scrawny boy sexually appealing. Ms. Dench's acting is what disturbed me. She reminds me of a spider in a web, patiently waiting to ensnare her prey. As a lonely, bitter spinster she successfully runs off every person she befriends with her "intensity". She is obsessive, possessive, grabbing, clawing, but her prey doesn't see it coming. If you appreciate great performances by great actresses, I highly recommend this movie. Dame Dench's performance is one you will not soon forget.
The only reason I gave this movie two stars is because I reserve five stars for movies that move me on an emotional and intellectual level, which this movie did not. I don't believe it was supposed to. Some movies are for entertainment purpose alone, and this is one. Nothing wrong with that. It will definitely entertain you.
What's hotter than an old dike..........2007-08-20
This film is one of those that deals with many so called taboos in our very puckered up butt cheek culture. Sex with minors and homosexuality. The movie was utterly believable and entertaining with stealer acting by dame Judi Dench who plays an old, doughtering lesbian that longs for companionship and possibly a bit more. She has her sights set on friend and colleague Cate Blanchett. There is a twisted love triangle...well kinda a trapezoid actually, anyway you get the idea, I love you, she lusts me, this person only likes this person as a friend sort of thing. The story is superbly written for the screen and the two main characters are fleshed out so well they are reminiscent of people you once knew or still know. The film don't go too far over the top and has lots of little plot twists that keep you glued to your little lazy boy wondering if this old lesbo is ever gonna score. I recommend this film for any fan of Dame Dench or adult themed movies. The only criticism I have for this film is the score was rather annoying at times when I rather thought the acting didn't need a music bed to come off dramatic.

Not my favorite season...........2007-09-09
"Ok, it is difficult for anyone to avoid getting stuck in a rut. My little voice was telling me that we should be doing more interesting or funny back stories. But what could I do? I was a big movie star at the time. After all, Quigley was about to come out."
I love Magnum P.I. I even have some trivia up on my web site. But the shows in seasons five and six kind of bore me. They don't have an edge to them. They're like a pasture or minister. Sure you like happy positive stories some times, but you also want to see the darker side of humanity. I think the biggest problem with this season is that the B-stories or side-stories do not have enough conflict. They're not sexy or nasty enough. For a TV show to be good, you have to have good side stories.
If you like Magnum P.I., read my book or watch seasons one through four or seven and eight. If you love, love, love Magnum then you might as well buy this one too. But I doubt you'll go to this box first when you have an itch to watch a Magnum episode.
Another great season..........2007-06-26
This is yet another great season from the makers of Magnum PI. It is a great addition to my collection. You really need to purchase it to see for yourself.
ups and downs..........2007-06-26
Every show has its ups and downs...and Magnum's downs are a lot higher than the ups of most shows...
-
Best TV Show ever.......2007-05-17
Easily the best tv show ever, every episode is a delight.
I dont mind if some dont like it, but some of the reviews of this by so called fans are nothing short of insane....maybe these people cant recognise quality...let them go and watch Big Brother and find their IQ level there.
Great series, great main actors, great characters...everything is just right...cant wait to get every season on dvd...considering the 8th season is so short...why cant we have season 7 and 8 in one package?!
Not Magnum at its finest hour, but necessary for the collection.......2007-05-15
Beginning with Season Five, the writers of Magnum P.I. began to tinker with the shows format. Something not out of the ordinary when a show reaches beyond the four season mark. While most of season five's episodes work with this new formula, season six tries to continue with this formula, but instead misses the boat more times than not. Gone are the days of Magnum swimming on the beach or hanging out at the club to meet a client. Higgins no longer bargains with Magnum for guest house privlidges, and their customary banter only happens occassionally. This was done perhaps, the emphasize the fact that Magnum was getting older, and several episodes stress the fact that he may soon want to do something else with his life. Even though Magnum is quick to point out how great Hawaii is, one can get the impression at times that he's searching for something with a little more meaning.
Overall, the tone of the season is darker and much more serious. Come to think of it, most episodes of season six are shot entirely out of Hawaii (Deja Vu, Going Home), and several episodes go by where you see no trace of the guest house or estate for that matter. Episodes like the previous two mentioned and "The Way of the Stalking Horse," are some of the year's bright spots. I give the writer's credit for trying to branch out, but Magnum's sharp decline in ratings at this time(Number 8 in 1984 to out of the top 30 by 1985) was an indication that viewers preffered the old formula, and that the show was running out of steam. All is well however, because season seven and eight revert back (for the most part) to the show's old formula. Although I have not seen all of these episodes, the one's I have (Missing Melody, Laura, Little Girl Who) are, in my opinion, some of the best of the series.

Description
After 25 chart-topping hits, the singing star becomes a movie star! George Strait makes his film debut in an entertaining look into the heart and soul of country music from Young Guns director Christopher Cain.
Superstar Dusty Chandler (Strait) is tired of the smoke, the strobe lights and the overmiked sound of his arena spectaculars. One night, something snaps. "I'm just going to take a little walk," Dusty says as he walks out of the empty hall, ditching his beard, ponytail - and temporarily, his career - to reclaim his down-home country roots. But his manager (Leslie Ann Warren) retaliates: a stand-in (Kyle Chandler) lip-synchs his songs in concert. And a romance with a lovely rancher (Isabel Glasser) is on again, off again like a rodeo cowboy. The simple life can be complex, but it's nothing a revitalized country boy can't handle!

Pure Country.......2007-09-06
This is a good movie if you like George Strait as I do. It's a good family movie. I had seen it years ago and was unable to find a copy locally. I received it very quickly from Amazon and am very pleased with the service rendered.
Pure Integrity.......2007-08-23
I am not a Country Music fan. In fact, I don't seriously listen to any music... maybe Mozart and Bach. And this movie was made as a star vehicle for the most successful Country Music singer in our time. It has lots of songs, sung right through, and a hit CD with studio versions. So why have I watched it over ten times since I found the VHS in a remainders bin at the video rental? Why have I persuaded visitors and family members to give it a try with me? Why have I emailed the writer asking about details?
This movie has a tinsel cover, but little of the light that shines out of it comes from the dance hall. It is fundamentally a movie about values. The shining human values of hard work, duty, prudence, loyalty, friendhip, and most of all the meaning of human endeavour. "You don't disturb a man when he is working!" Even the marvelously contemporary and deeply moving love story, with its climax in perfectly romantic lyrics sealed with a kiss, is a layer of Fabergee enamel on the pure gold of what it means to be a North American man or woman of the classic mould. That is: strong, silent, wise, and good. "Follow the roots."
This is a writerly movie. The story and to some extent the script are paramount. The biographical accidents around the time the author wrote the test are relevant. His mother had died. His career seemed empty. And meaning eluded him. Somehow, he managed to pull not only his own life together, but to see clearly through "all the smoke and the lights" into the heart of our culture "the heartland" of our land. [As a Canadian totally identifying with the values, I take references to "America" in the continental rather than the national sense.]
Highly recommended as a beacon of hope in our troubled doubting times.
the music is great.......2007-08-13
I love this movie because it has the song that my husband put on when he propose to me, the story is great too and it is so close to what George Strait life is in real life. George Strait is a great entertainer and he can sign.
Pure Country.......2007-08-07
George is not a award winning actor, but the story line and other actors sure did a knock out job of supporting him. The movie in its self has a great story line.
Country History.......2007-06-28
Pure Country is a wonderful review of history, not because the film is historical in nature but because it is part of the early Strait years and helped to establish what George Strait country music was and would be. The acting is visibly acting and the storyline is classic with little attempt at original plotting. Essentially, the successful artist has lost his grip on where he started, leaves the stage long enough to visit his home, takes the advice and love of the grandmother who reared him, finds himself and a sweetheart, then returns to dismiss the foolish imposter who would like to be in his place, and the ending is happy for everyone with the artist even forgiving his longtime friend for attempting to control and use him; everyone is redeemed to some extint. When you have had enough blood and guts, this is a sweet story with the added presence of a man who has been a sqeaky clean role model for at least twenty five years in the entertainment world. It is okay if you don't cry at the end, just count how many times Strait kisses this actress. This was a refreshing review.

"I made it Dad... why didn't you?".......2007-07-11
OK, so I am not the biggest Magnum P.I. fan to ever watch the show. Sure, I liked it when it was on... but come 1984, my interests shifted over to MIAMI VICE... and they never returned. Oh I still watched.. but to be completely honest, I never really cared that much if the show was on or not.
But...
When the Season Four premier episode entitled HOME FROM THE SEA first aired on 29 September 1983, I - like many other viewers - was treated to one of the most moving episodes of the entire Magnum P.I. series. I must admit that I only ever saw that episode one time... on the day it first aired... but it stuck with me for over twenty-three years. HOME FROM THE SEA was the only episode from the entire series that I vividly remembered for all of that time. It was the one episode that I told anyone and everyone about. It was the one episode that I tried and tried to catch when the show went into syndication. I never found it. So when Universal started releasing the series on DVD, I searched and I waited.
I purchased this boxed set FOR THAT EPISODE AND THAT EPISODE ONLY. And that episode alone warrants the five star rating. I cannot stress enough the impact this one show had on my psyche. I simply never stopped thinking about it. Just watch it and you will understand. I cried and so did my Wife.
I am sure that I will enjoy watching the rest of Season Four, and that may even cause me to want to buy some of the other Seasons. But all I really wanted is HOME FROM THE SEA, and now I have it. It only took twenty-three years for me to find it. I doubt if even Thomas Magnum could tread water for that long. If you are even remotely a Magnum P.I. fan, this is the Season you want because this is the Season with HOME FROM THE SEA.
FROM www.tv.com:
It's the 4th of July, and Higgins is playing in a polo match, T.C. is taking his baseball team to a professional game, Rick is out with his latest girlfriend on the King Kamehameha II yacht, and Thomas is observing his annual Independence Day tradition of a solitary day at sea -- until his surf ski is capsized in the wake of a recklessly driven speedboat and set adrift. Carried off further and further away from land by the powerful Molokai Channel, Thomas relies on childhood memories of his father's training him to tread water to keep himself afloat as he struggles desperately to stay above water and fend off a menacing shark. As the hours pass, Higgins, T.C. and Rick each have a sixth sense that Thomas is in trouble, and they team up to rescue him. Thomas approaches the twenty-four hour mark in the water recalling his wedding to Michelle and his father's burial -- on July 4, 1951 -- as Higgins scoops him out of the ocean, with T.C. in his helicopter overhead and Rick on the yacht nearby.
Magnum P.I. - The Complete Fourth Season.......2007-06-28
Being Magnum fans I purchased the first four seasons as an Anniversary gift for my husband. We are really enjoying the DVD's.
We had them for a few days when a storm caused us to lose power off and on for 3 days...thankfully I had 3 of my four hour batteries charged for our compact DVD player. We spent 4 hours the first night of the storms watching Magnum. We had forgotten that the theme music had been changed, kind of strange at first.
We have been very happy with the quality of the DVD's so far and are anxiously awaiting for season 7 and 8 to be released.
Cheesy from Childhood, But Still Golden.......2007-03-20
How is it that Tom Selleck is still so appealing, despite the clunkiness of an 80s sitcom? It's a cheesy 80s sitcom. But Tom Selleck still makes it appealing.
Spoiled by DVD Quality.......2007-02-10
As previous reviewers have said, 5 stars for the show, and 0 for the DVD's. 3 episodes in my set had serious problems. Thank God Season 5's discs are not double sided. Hopefully, they will be better.

The writing-directing team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers (Father of the Bride) made this sweet satire about a high-powered yuppie executive (Diane Keaton) who unexpectedly becomes a mom and finds she can't successfully integrate the role into her busy life. Typical of the Shyer-Meyers films prior to Myers taking the director's reins on the wonderful Parent Trap, Baby Boom is a little wooden and more sentimental than genuine. But there are entertaining moments, for sure, and Keaton is a delight. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:
This Movie Makes You Want To Watch Over & Over Again!!!.......2007-09-12
Once you watch this movie, you'll know how great chemistry Diane Keaton and the baby Elizabeth (played by Kristina & Michelle Kennedy twins) have. I'm so amazed by how awesome the baby(s) acted. Elizabeth cried, laughed, and smiled at the right part, and interacting with Diane (and also other co-stars) so well. My favorite part (the most touching part) of this movie is when Diane decided to keep Elizabeth. Diane says, "Don't expect too much.", and Elizabeth says, "Ok." with clapping her tiny hands. I just love this movie. If you like a good/heartwarming story with a baby (or a kid), you'll enjoy this movie!
