Director Spike Lee's When the Levees Broke is the definitive document of he unmitigated disaster that was, and is, Hurricane Katrina. It's also a contemporary manifestation of an ancient tradition: an oral history, told by the people who lived it, with no narration and only the occasional use of archival cable and broadcast news footage in addition to Lee's own film. And a grim tale it is, an "American tragedy" subtitled "a Requiem in Four Acts," each of them about an hour long ("Act V," appearing on the third of the set's three discs, is a lengthy epilogue with new material not included in the original HBO broadcast) and focusing almost exclusively on New Orleans, as opposed to the Gulf Coast region in general.
Act I sets the scene; as the hurricane nears the Crescent City, some residents leave town, while others stay behind, figuring they'll just ride the storm out (Mayor Ray Nagin's "mandatory evacuation" order rings fairly hollow, as there's no public transportation provided for the many who don't own vehicles and thus couldn't get out even if they wanted to). The real problems begin after Katrina makes landfall on August 29, 2005. Displaced New Orleaneans crowd into the Superdome, soon to become a living hell for those stuck there; the incredibly poorly engineered levees break, flooding some 80 percent of the city; and people start dying by the hundreds, victims of drowning, lack of food, water, and medicine, and other causes. And so it goes. Act II finds the survivors struggling to keep it together while the federal, state, and local assistance they've been promised fails to show up; Act III traces the dispersal of these so-called "refugees" (as one man puts it, "Refugees? You mean they took away our citizenship, too?") all over the country, not knowing where their families, friends, and neighbors are, or even if they're still alive; and Act IV deals with the slow rebuilding of the city while insurance companies refuse to pay claims and money keeps going toward the Iraq war effort instead.
Several themes predominate here. One, of course, is the appalling performance of authorities on nearly every level, who ignored specific warnings about the levees and then professed ignorance after the fact; Lee doesn't have to go out of his way to make George W. Bush, FEMA chief Michael Brown, and other members of the Bush administration (not to mention his own mother) look bad, as they do an excellent job of that themselves. Another is the shameful ineptitude of the response; it's hard not to be disgusted when it's pointed out more than once that while we were able to provide supplies and assistance to Indonesians within two days of the 2004 tsunami, American citizens were virtually ignored for five days or more. Most of all, When the Levees Broke (which includes optional commentary by Lee for all four acts) leaves us feeling the sheer rage of the poor and dispossessed of New Orleans, where the population is 70 percent African-American. Confronted with the ignorance, arrogance, and callousness of the people whose job it was to protect them, they can point to just one cause: racism. --Sam Graham
Description
One year after Hurricane Katrina decimated New Orleans, director Spike Lee presents a four-hour, four-part chronicle recounting, through words and images, one of our country?s most profound natural disasters. In addition to revisiting the hours leading up to the arrival of Katrina, a Category 5 hurricane before it hit the coast of Louisiana, When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts tells the personal stories of those who lived to tell about it, at the same time exploring the underbelly of a nation where the divide along race and class lines has never been more pronounced.

Hurricane Katrina.......2007-09-15
Spike Lee's documentary on the Hurricane Katrina victims is heartfelt, informative and a do not miss! If the US Government didn't see it, they should to see just how embarrassing they really are. It should make them wonder how they can sleep at night & call themselves Americans!
Watch this....
Spike Lee Gets It!.......2007-09-12
This is the most awesome account of the people who were (and are) victims of Katrina and the US Government. Spike Lee speaks to people of all races and socio-economic groups in this film. He also documents some of the heroes who did what they could while trying to get around governmental interference.
Props to Spike!
Stark, Subjective, Personal and Overwhelming.......2007-09-03
To me this was the definitive documentary on the personal tragedy in New Orleans. Forget the spin, THIS is what happened to the people of New Orleans - just the existential experience of levees breaking and flooding an ancient city, the facts told from a very personal viewpoint. Put the camera in their face and let them talk.
I've always enjoyed Spike Lee's keen camera eye and the stories in his films but this 3-CD set is overwhelming and in a tragic way, very beautiful.
SPIKE LEE IMPRESSIVE.......2007-07-31
THE COVERAGE ON HURRICANE KATRINA IS VERY INFORMATIONAL AND BRINGS THE VIEWER INTO CONTACT WITH THE DEVASTATION FELT BY THE VICTIMS. A GOOD FILM FOR REFERENCE OF A HISTORIC DIASTER
Impressive.......2007-07-25
A very impressive documentary which keeps you wondering: where was and is the federal government and what does New Orleans look like two years after?

Not great, but still a good family movie.......2007-09-10
Evan Almighty is a big summer comedy with a big budget and so it must be judge by summer blockbuster standards. It obviously didn't make as much money as its producers hoped, and the movie does have a lot of shortcomings, BUT I thought it was a delightful comedy that is just perfect for familes looking for wholesome entertainment. Evan Almighty is a sequel to Bruce Almighty. In Bruce Almighty, Jim Carrey was the star. He made the movie great. He was given the powers of God and hilarity ensued. Evan, played by Steve Carrell, had a small but funny part in that movie. Carrell, now a major star in his own right, headlines this movie. In Evan Almighty, Evan doesn't get to play God. Instead, he gets to play Moses.
God, Morgan Freeman returning as the amiable God as a man, appears to Evan and tells him to build an Ark because a flood is coming. This is a problem because Evan has just been elected to Congress. As a freshman Congress, Evan has a lot of pressure to uphold his campaign promise to "change the world." Of course, God has other ideas. You've probably seen it in the commercials. No matter what Evan does, animals keep following him and his beard keeps growing. Eventually Evan gives in and builds the arc.
Aware of the history behind the movie, I really enjoyed it. While not as good as its predecessor, this movie still has a strong Christian theme and should be enjoyed by all but the most cynical. The cast is for the most part decent. Wanda Sykes is hilarious as Carrell's assistant. Jonah HIll plays a congressional aide without using any swear words. John Goodman plays the evil congressman in the movie (don't expect a civics lesson, this movie plays fast and loose with how the Congress works). Lauren Graham plays the beautiful, suffering wife.
The whole family should enjoy this movie. It doesn't have the wide-ranging appeal of the original, but is still a lot of fun.
Evan Almighty put a delightful twist into established biblical scripture..........2007-09-08
With Jim Carrey and Jennifer Aniston both declining to reprise their roles for the sequel to Bruce Almighty. Returning Director Tom Shadyac goes in a different direction by paired up Steve Carell (The 40 Year Old Virgin) with Morgan Freeman. (Both Freeman and Carell are reprising their roles from Bruce Almighty).
Evan Almighty put a delightful twist into established biblical scripture. It was also good to see Shadyac remain true to scripture (With God (Freeman) holding true to his promise never to flood the world again) but at the same time, he allows his audience the opportunity to expand their personal views on the concepts of prayer and making a difference in the lives of others.
God (Freeman) mentioned the following:
"If someone prays for patience, you think God gives them patience? Or does he give them the opportunity to be patient? If he prayed for courage, does God give him courage, or does he give him opportunities to be courageous? If someone prayed for the family to be closer, do you think God zaps them with warm fuzzy feelings, or does he give them opportunities to love each other?"
Lastly, Evan's ARK does play a significant role, other than being the film's signature vessel. A-R-K is the acronym for a single Act of Random Kindness...which is the first step that one must take in order to make a difference in the lives of others.
Delightful Family Film.......2007-09-05
I saw this film with 5 of my friends from varying religious backgrounds and we all loved it! I was worried that it would be shallow and stupid, but, it surprised me with it's warmth. I especially loved the message at the end of the film. The special effects were top-notch and I laughed and found the message of "It's the little things that count" spot on especially in today's world where money and "things" have replaced love and video games "raise children" that are jaded and used to violence by the time they are 11. Evan Almighty "gets it." I wish there were more films like this one.
Great Family Movie!!.......2007-09-03
I loved this movie, too often there is so much sex or violence that you have nothing to take your kids to that is just fun. People who think it is boring are jaded because no one gets murdered and there is no violence.
I'm in my 50's and I thoroughly enjoyed it, so it's not just for families with children.
Nonsense.......2007-08-31
Let's see... what will you get when you see this movie? Pretty basic gags, some minor sexual double sense jokes, corny dialogs, all messed up (mashed up) with biblical stuff, which I don't think is wrong but here is forced to the limit of incredulous.
I'd only recommend this movie only if you want to spare some time and don't have anything more important to do. Forgettable.

The love life of a woolly mammoth--handled with G-rated delicacy--drives this sequel to the first computer-animated romp in the age of prehistoric mammals. While the first Ice Age took a delightful premise and suffocated it with a formulaic plot--in which a mammoth named Manfred (voiced by Ray Romano, Everyone Loves Raymond), a sloth named Sid (John Leguizamo, Moulin Rouge!), and a sabre-tooth tiger named Diego (Denis Leary, Rescue Me) helped an abandoned human infant return to its tribe (basically, Three Mammals and a Baby)--the sequel takes the now-familiar setting, gives it a shapeless, episodic storyline, and yet somehow becomes pretty darn entertaining. Faced with the threat of a flood from melting ice, our heroic trio are on the run to escape from their blossoming valley. On the way, they meet a female mammoth (Queen Latifah, Bringing Down the House) who thinks she's an opossum and get menaced by some freshly defrosted carnivo! rous fish. Add into the mix a herd of lava-worshipping mini-sloths, some Busby Berkeley-style vultures, and more ingenious slapstick featuring the acorn-crazed Scrat, and Ice Age: The Meltdown will amuse even jaded adults. -- Bret Fetzer

An entertaining follow-up.......2007-08-05
This movie doesn't-wow you or even pull any heart strings, but there is an good message about facing your fears. The whole save our race segments really didn't do anything for me-mainly because Manny's other side kicks weren't extactly looking for mates either-so why was his loneliness more poignant? Crash and Eddie were interesting additions and Latifah did a decend job as Ellie. The final segment with squirrel reaching the pearly gates was cute, the other short skits were a little played out because we've seen them all before. Still, this is an entertaining animation that the kids should enjoy.
Dumb & Disappointing.......2007-07-18
First off I would like to ask forgiveness for this review; because I know it will not be very detailed. I saw this movie when it was a New Release, and while I remember exactly how I felt about this movie I can't recall a great many details.
Basic Plot: Ice is melting; causes big problems for animals. Manny gets a mate.
The first Ice Age had morals like the value of friendship; serious moments dealing with grief; and of course innocent comedic moments like the cooing of an adorable baby. Ice Age 2, however, lacks the greatness of its predecessor. The comedy in this movie was much dumber; with Queen Latifah's character an absentminded and seemingly retarded mammoth that Manny falls for after many series of bad impressions. I had hoped that the people from the first Ice Age would play a role here; but they were absent.
Parents and older children won't enjoy this movie. A lot of kids movies seem to have baser humor these days; so the little ones might enjoy it but why have your kids watch this movie when there are so many great family movies? Skip this film.
Funny and Touching from Start to Finish.......2007-07-13
Animated features seem to get better and better through the years, but even the best ones always seem to be less than desirable for the adult audience. Not this movie. This is one of the funniest animated films I have ever seen. Also, you forget that you are watching a "glorified" cartoon and you really start liking the characters. They certainly went all out in this film and it's really a hoot from beginning to end. The movie has everything; comedy, drama, romance and even music. I enjoyed it totally all the way through and you will too. Could of sworn that I heard a couple of swear words though, but probably nothing the kids haven't already heard. Both younger and older kids will love the movie. This is one of the best movies made that all ages will enjoy. Even grandma and grandpa will probably find it a "hoot". If you are only going to see one animated feature this year, make it this one. Well worth owning so you can watch it again.
Ice Age the Meltdown.......2007-07-12
Could watch this movie again and again without being bored. Delivery of product was very timely.
Wonderful.......2007-07-10
I just wanted to add my 5 stars to this movie to offset the negatives from the Hellspawns that seem to populate our poor planet.
This is wonderful family entertainment for everyone to enjoy. I am a middle-aged man and I watched this with my teen-aged son and we both laughed out loud throughout the whole movie.
Believe all the good things about this film. Take with a boulder of salt all the negatives. Buy it. Enjoy it.
Highly recommended.

Evan's Ark.......2007-09-09
It's hard enough being a rookie congressman with a campaign promise to change the world, but when God himself shows up before you even settle in and commands you to build a really big boat in the middle of a Virginia housing development; well that takes it to a whole new level.
Like George Burns before him, Morgan Freeman has a hard time convincing his chosen one to do as he's told, and it takes a boat load of divine intervention to make Congressman Baxter (Steve Carrell) trade in his power suits for sackcloth and get started measuring cubits.
Amidst the ensuing shenanigans and slapstick, I'm pretty sure he may have been humming the tune of "Fixing a Hole" by the Beatles, and muttering something like:
I'm building an ark ere the rain gets in
Can't keep my mind from wondering
Where it will go
I'm hauling the planks that make up the floor
To keep my mind from wondering
Where it will go
And when finally the work was over, he may have been saying to himself:
I'm filling my ark in the biblical way
And when the sky is thundering
There will I go
And it really doesn't matter if I'm wrong
I'm right where I belong
I'm right where I belong
Silly people run around
They laugh at me and always ask me
When the rain will start to pour
Kids will probably like this movie, and if you're an adult who can appreciate the miracle of CGI you may like it too. Funny in places, overdone in others, but with a message for taking the time for a number of things that weren't important yesterday.
Amanda Richards
*1/2 = Evan Not 2 Almighty.......2007-09-08
I would like to say that Steve Carell is one the funniest men in America ever to hit the silver screen. So, when hearing about a sequel to a Jim Carrey movie for his own, I was very impressed with a movie like "Evan Almighty." But whatever the whether, I didn't think it could be appealing to critics, because unfortunately, there is no Jim Carrey in it.
I have to say that "Bruce Almighty" is my favorite comedy with Jim Carrey. Now, we're 4 years away from the year 2003, when it was released, and now, instead of Jim Carrey being the star, we got Steve Carrell instead. It's because Jim Carrey doesn't like doing the same roles twice, but he should give it a shot, though. I bet it wouldn't be that bad.
"Evan Almighty" opens up with Evan Baxter (Steve Carrell) alongside with his partner, Susan Ortega on the news hereby congratulating Evan Baxter for being Congressmen of Washington D.C. He was done being a newsman in Buffalo, NY and went from newsman to Congressman. In the second shot, we are seen with Evan, his wife, Joan (Lauren Graham) and his 3 kids, Dylan, Jordan and Ryan (Johnny Simmons, Graham Phillips and Jimmy Bennett).
On the first night when the whole family are in Washington D.C, after Evan hears that his 3 kids prayed to God, Evan prays to God by himself. But as soon God (Morgan Freeman) appears under his skin, instead of giving Evan almighty powers, like he gave Bruce in the first film, he tells Evan Baxter to build an ark, because a flood is coming. (The good message to this movie is that everyone should do an act of random kindness. And that's a good thing, and that's what Evan Baxter learns on in this story.)
God is right that there's a flood. It's a flood of a corney, unrealistic plot and quirky characters. Well, at least the kids shake up a bit as Evan's sons. However, they are one of the best parts in acting for this movie. Steve Carrell does shine again as Evan Baxter only in his own movie. But keep in mind, this is not Bruce Nolan's movie. In fact, he doesn't have anything to do in this movie.
But however one piece of acting that is totally not new is Morgan Freeman as God. And yet, Morgan Freeman is a very good actor. He does shine a little as God. He's a good part of the movie industry.
However, I couldn't manage to get through most of the corney dialogue throughout the movie. It's totally unpredictable and unbelievable to me. How could you just manage one corney dialogue, two corney pieces of dialogue at the same time. Could director Tom Shadyac every take his down-town directing and give the actors their down-town acting for one chance?
Overall, should I manage to look at a movie like Steve Carrell's "Evan Almighty?" For the most part, sorta, but maybe. "Evan Almighty" tries and tries to be like "Bruce Almighty," but it ultimately fails. Apparently, I'm sure the Almighty series should be done now. Too bad that Jim Carrey doesn't want to do too many sequels of the same character.
One of the worst movies ever made!.......2007-09-04
I am a HUGE steve carell fan and was really looking forward to what i was sure was going to be a hilarious adition to his already great career. Movies like Anchorman, 40 year old virgin and little miss sunshine demonstrated how talented steve carell is in both the comedy and drama genre, but clearly he made a mistake in chosing this film. First of all the movie has not one funny moment in the entire film, even Steve's unique comedy style could not save this film's pourly written script and lame dialogue. Secondly the storyline makes no sense, and has so many horrible plot problems that it makes you angry just watching it. And thirdly the most annoying black woman of all time (Wanda Sykes) is so annoying that she makes you want gouge out your own eyes and especially your ears with word that she utters. This movie really has no redeaming features and deserves 0 out 5 stars, lets hope that steve's next project the remake of get smart hits the mark - as this movie in one word is terrible.

Amazon.com essential video
One of the greatest screen biographies ever produced, this monumental film runs nearly three hours, won seven Academy Awards, and gave George C. Scott the greatest role of his career. It was released in 1970 when protest against the Vietnam War still raged at home and abroad, and many critics and moviegoers struggled to reconcile current events with the movie's glorification of Gen. George S. Patton as a crazy-brave genius of World War II.
How could a movie so huge in scope and so fascinated by its subject be considered an anti-war film? The simple truth is that it's not--Patton is less about World War II than about the rise and fall of a man whose life was literally defined by war, and who felt lost and lonely without the grand-scale pursuit of an enemy. George C. Scott embodies his role so fully, so convincingly, that we can't help but be drawn to and fascinated by Patton as a man who is simultaneously bound for hell and glory. The film's opening monologue alone is a masterful display of acting and character analysis, and everything that follows is sheer brilliance on the part of Scott and director Franklin J. Schaffner.
Filmed on an epic scale at literally dozens of European locations, Patton does not embrace war as a noble pursuit, nor does it deny the reality of war as a breeding ground for heroes. Through the awesome achievement of Scott's performance and the film's grand ambition, Patton shows all the complexities of a man who accepted his role in life and (like Scott) played it to the hilt. --Jeff Shannon
Description
A critically acclaimed film that won a total of eight 1970 Academy Awards (Including Best Picture), Patton is a riveting portrait of one of the 20th century's greatest military geniuses. One of it's Oscars went to George Patton, the only Allied general truly feared by the Nazis. Charismatic and Flamboyant, Patton designed his own uniforms, sported ivory-handled six-shooters, and believed he was a warrior in past lives. He outmanuevered Rommel in Africa, and after D-Day led his troops in an unstoppable campaign across Europe. But he was rebellious as well insight and poignancy, his own volatile personailty was one enemy he could never defeat.

Classic.......2007-09-02
This movie is a classic. Patton died soon after the war ended.

He'll Never Fade Away. .......2007-08-15
I've been watching Patton about every other year since I was a child and have to say that the movie never gets old. As far as performances go, George C. Scott exceeds all expectations in this role. You get the feeling while watching him that the actor indeed thought he was his character during his time on the set. His Patton is the epitome of passion, desire, will, and honor. Of course, true to life, he was a complicated figure and the film displays this aspect of the man as well. He was vainglorious and rash--attributes often expected, and forgivable in a general. Scott's impressive but so is the script. One of the nice things about this DVD is that Francis Ford Coppola gives a short intro in which he shares that he was the screenplay writer and also fleshes out a few circumstances around the making of The Godfather. His perspective adds to one's appreciation of the film. Patton also has some great action scenes such as the initial battle in the desert against, who he thought was, Rommel. The German General Staff scenes are speculative but unquestionably entertaining. I find Patton to be a fun and noble flick.

An awesome movie about one of the Greatest Generals of our time. Even though the movie is set during World War 2, you can see how the politicians still managed to muck up what needed to be done for the sake of political correctness.
a great war movie .......2007-07-18
these is one of my Dads favorite movies he really enjoys it
he would rate these movie very high
"...It's only important for me to know.".......2007-07-16
This movie only gets better with age and, apparently, with re-mastering. What a beautifully done film. Everything from George C. Scott's portray of an extremely complex man, to the soundtrack, and epic scenery contribute to one of the most complete film's of the last forty years. Add Karl Malden's equally superlative performance as Omar Bradley and what you have is one of the most complete and evocative biographical sketches ever to grace celulloid.

Customer Reviews:

Let's be honest: this 1995 epic isn't nearly as bad as its negative publicity led us to expect. At the time it was the most expensive Hollywood production in history (it had a Titanic-sized $200 million budget), and the film arrived in theaters with so much controversy and negative gossip that it was an easy target for ridicule. The movie itself, a flawed but enjoyable post-apocalypse thriller, deserves better. Waterworld stars Kevin Costner as the Mariner, a lone maverick with gills and webbed feet who navigates the endless seas of Earth after the complete melting of the polar ice caps. The Mariner has been caged like a criminal when he's freed by Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and enlisted to help her and a young girl (Tina Majorino) escape from the Smokers, a group of renegade terrorists led by Dennis Hopper in yet another memorably villainous role. It is too bad the predictable script isn't more intelligent, but as a companion piece to The Road Warrior, this seafaring stunt-fest is adequately impressive. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Amazing movie!!!.......2007-09-05
Wow, maybe you shouldn't even watch movies, because I don't see what separates Waterworld from other huge Hollywood movies. If you're a fan of any far flung futuristic fantasy (that means cheesy to some of you I guess) definitely watch this movie!!! I just watched it last night on regular DVD in High Def and the picture quality is amazing. I can't wait to get the HDDVD. I'd give this movie of the year. If you're tired of the rest of uncreative teen movie garbage thats currently being churned out, watch this!!!
Review Excerpt:
"4. The pace of the movie was TERRIBLE, and I read IT WAS CUT DOWN! WOW ... for an action movie, this REALLY trudged along at a snail's pace. I would have cut another 1/2 off, minimum. If the story's going to be a little weak..."
The story, weak!?!?!? If this isn't a blast of fresh creativity in the vein of The Road Warrior, I don't know what is. You won't find any corny acting here either. The movie is near perfection, especially the story. Waterworld is a thrill ride in an alternate future that's really quite believable. I was so pumped when it was over that I couldn't even sleep for 4 hours.
If you're too stuck in reality to enjoy something like this, go watch Lord of War, American Pie, or some other movie with small amounts of creativity anchored to boring, normal life. If you like stuff like Mad Max, Star Wars, He Man, Road Warrior and all those other futuristic 80s movies (yeah, most of those are older than that), then watch this! Top Notch and with a 200M$ budget you can't deny it!
amazing HD edition.......2007-09-02
This HD version will amazed you with a pristine picture quality and with a perfect surround sound.
I don't know about previous non HD version but here we are talking of real High definition .
This is a piece of material to demonstrate your HD equipments.
By opposite Mad max road warrior is very far from this for which i gave 2 stars.
So buy it without hésitate.
Extended Edition Please.......2007-07-27
With so much other crap being released these days for a quick buck, can we PLEASE get this re-released as a decent DVD version complete with the Extended Edition that's shown on cable and television from time to time. I would love to spend my money on it. Who is with me?
The earth covered in water.......2007-06-03
Some people say there is dry land some where, a little girl has a map on her back to show the way, but nobody can read it.
Nitpicker's delight.......2007-05-20
If you take every movie seriously this movie deserves negative stars...it is that bad. Every aspect of the movie is ill-conceived and poorly executed.
However, if you and perhaps some of your friends enjoy nitpicking terrible movies, this movie is prime for the (nit)picking. Mystery science theatre 3000 watchers rejoice (if only they had used waterworld for the feature length MST3k)!
This is especially true for anyone who has any understanding of basic science. It takes seconds to travel from one glaring flaw to another! What hack wrote this POS? Who decided to pay for it without doing ANY fact/feasability checking! I don't think this movie left any natural law unviolated!
Have you ever smoked a decades old cigarette? Have you ever tried to use a shell that has been near salt water for who know how long (corrosion is pretty well ignored in every way)? Have you ever tried to fuel your jetski with CRUDE oil? Does a diving bell with a flexable surface maintain a constant volume as the pressure increases? Can you grow anything in salt-water soaked soil? I won't even touch how completely Kostner's special 'gift' violates every premise of evolutionary biology. Ever want to see someone floating in a turd shaped derigible?
I laughed the whole way through...maybe you will as well.

Product Description
"Filled with heart and humor" (The New York Times), Mystic Pizza charts the lives and loves of three unforgettable waitresses in a little town called Mystic. Starring Julia Roberts (Erin Brockovich), Annabeth Gish (Beautiful Girls) and Lili Taylor (The Haunting), Mystic Pizza "has all the right ingredients of a main-course favorite" (Video Movie Guide). For sexy Daisy Araujo (Roberts), her sensible sister Kat (Gish) and their wisecracking friend Jojo (Taylor), the summer after high school is a summer they'll never forget. Slinging pizza at a local restaurant, the three girls share their hopes, dreams and plans for escaping their small town. And when Daisy is swept off her feet by a wealthy young man named Charles, they all think she's found her ticket out. But when the girls learn that Charles isn't the man they think he is, they discover that with friendship and self-respect, not only will they find real happiness (and a way out of Mystic)...they just might find themselves!

A sweet and sassy comedy about the bonds of sisterhood, Mystic Pizza offers the opportunity to see some solid young actors early in their careers. Three sisters of blue-collar Portuguese descent work in a pizzeria in the coastal town of Mystic, Connecticut. Each has her own unique romantic entanglements. One is the fast girl in town (Julia Roberts), who falls for a rich kid but wonders if she'll ever be accepted; one is the lifelong local girl (Lili Taylor) in love with her fisherman boyfriend (Vincent D'Onofrio) but scared of what marriage will do to their sex lives; and the youngest sister (Annabeth Gish) dreams of going to Yale but during a summer of baby-sitting has an affair with a married man. Through it all each sister depends on the others regardless of the complications. It's the alluring charm of the three disparate leads that makes Mystic Pizza the delightful experience it is. --Robert Lane
Customer Reviews:
Mindless way to spend a Sunday afternoon.......2007-07-16
Despite the fact that Julia Roberts' face is displayed predominantly on the cover of this DVD, it's not a vehicle just for her. It maybe set her on the way to stardom, but she's in no way a great actress in this. She's the 'pretty' one of the film.
I picked this film for dead cheap months ago, and have never been in the mood for watching it. Until a couple of days ago, I put it in the DVD player and discovered a sweet film which reminded me slightly of Steel Magnolias and has possibly influenced a lot of other films in recent years. It's a predictable story, about two sisters and a friend, waitressing in a pizza place, caught in the summer after leaving school, and what to do with the rest of their lives.
You know where it goes from here. We've got the one who loves her boyfriend very much, but is so scared of commitment that she faints at the altar, played wonderfully by Lili Taylor. She's the friend. Then one sister who babysits only to fall for the kid's dad, played by Annabeth Gish. And then what could politely be called as the 'woman about town', by Julia Roberts, who falls for a rich guy, and makes an embarrassment of herself in front of his snobby parents.
It's a pretty much uneventful film, big hair, big clothes, big eighties film. There's not much to comment on, unless you spot Matt Damon in a family scene, given one line, for one of his first film roles. Apart from that, it's good enough to waste some time on a very lonely weekend.
DVD REVIEW.......2007-05-13
Excellent choice, one of Julia's earlest...this made her. Speaks volumes for early career. Great movie...witty...
Heartwarming Story.......2006-11-18
There is something magical about this film in its simplicity in examining the needs of the human heart. It is a comedy light in nature but handles its subject very well. It never fails to entertain and continues to draw you in with repeated viewings. Romance can be beautiful and charming and dear to the human spirit.
Once upon a time under Connecticut sky, there was a slice of heaven named Mystic Pizza!.......2006-08-06
This is one of these movies that exudes a distinguished freshness, that touch our hearts and spirits, making us to think about the singleness and kindness of the human nature.
Two sisters: Daisy (Julie Roberts) and Kate ( Annabeth Gish); a beloved friend Jojo (Lili Taylor) work at Mystic pizzeria. And this delightful picture elapses between the lives and times of these three adorable women; each one of them with her dreams and love affairs; someone of them fortunate; others simply a beauty illusion.
As you may guess this summer breeze picture has all what you wish to seduce you. Enrapturing landscapes, spontaneous performances, splendid script and a delirious scent to pizza hard to forget.
This is an invitation for you to make reservation around this magical and adorable tour. A superb artistic feat of Donald Petrie.
A Movie Worth Watching With a Comfortable Feel to It.......2006-07-02
Watched the 1988 movie "Mystic Pizza" today. It was one of the first movies for the female leads Julia Roberts , Annabeth Gish (native of Cedar Falls, Iowa), and Lili Taylor. Interestingly, Gish's name appears before Roberts in the credits at the end. Gish has gone on to a productive career, mostly in television, Taylor has moved into a career in more independent, quirky movies while Roberts has gone on to...well, you know.
I read Roger Ebert's review and he gave the movie 3 1/2 starts (out of 4) when it came out. I wouldn't rate it that high (maybe 2 1/2 or 3 out of 4), but the movie has kind of a comfortable feeling to it and gets better as it goes along. You don't see many movies about work & work environments these days and I think the scenes in the Mystic Pizza Parlor are pretty good. The romantic storylines are pretty standard and as Ebert says, "The movie isn't really about three girls in love; it's about three girls discovering what their standards for love are going to be." All-in-all I liked the movie. Oh, and watch carefully for Matt Damon in his big-screen debut!
