The surprising truth about Disney's 1982 computer-game fantasy is that it's still visually impressive (though technologically quaint by later high-definition standards) and a lot of fun. It's about a computer wizard named Flynn (Jeff Bridges) who is digitally broken down into a data stream by a villainous software pirate (David Warner) and reconstituted into the internal, 3-D graphical world of computers. It is there, in the blazingly colorful, geometrically intense landscapes of cyberspace, that Flynn joins forces with Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) to outmaneuver the Master Control program that holds them captive in the equivalent of a gigantic, infinitely challenging computer game. Disney's wizards used a variety of cinematic techniques and early-'80s state-of-the-art computer-generated graphics to accomplish their dynamic visual goals, and the result was a milestone in cyberentertainment, catering to technogeeks while providing a dazzling adventure for hackers and nonhackers alike. Appearing just in time to celebrate the nascent cyberpunk movement in science fiction, Tron received a decidedly mixed reaction when originally released, but has since become a high-tech favorite and a landmark in special effects, with a loyal following of fans. DVD is a perfect format for the movie's neon-glow color scheme, and the musical score by synthesizer pioneer Wendy Carlos is faithfully preserved on the digitally remastered soundtrack. --Jeff Shannon
Description
A masterpiece of breakthrough CGI ingenuity, Disney celebrates the 20th anniversary of TRON, a dazzling film at the flashpoint of a continuing revolution in its genre. This special collector's edition showcases an epic adventure inside a brave new world where the action is measureed in microseconds. When Flynn (Jeff Bridges) hacks the mainframe of his ex-employer to prove his work was stolen by another executive, he finds himself on a much bigger adventure. Beamed inside by a power-hungry master control program, he joins computer gladiators on a deadly game grid, complete with high-velocity "light cycles" and Tron (Bruce Boxleitner), a specialized security program. Together, they fight the ultimate battle with the MCP to decide the fate of both the electronic world and the real world!

Smeared.......2007-08-17
I held off on watching this icon product until my wife would watch it with me since it was before her time. I just placed the disk in (carefully) out of the box into my player and took off. Short story, it skipped repeatedly until I just stopped it and walked off. Turned out the back side was soiled and difficult to clean. I've not tried to watch again.
From elecTRON comes forth TRON!.......2007-08-15
"The Last Starfighter" was the first film to really introduce the new CGI computer graphics in 1984; but before that movie, came Tron.
The charm of this film goes without saying. The music score was done by the rock group "Journey" adding a lifting spiritual ambiance to the great costuming and early computer graphics. The premise of this story follows revelations found in Hindu, Buddhist and Christian teachings. The concept deals with the Universe existing inside the God of the Creation who is both Creator and creation.
This Universe within a Universe is made only all to clear as you enter the world of Kevin Flynn, played by Jeff Bridges. Kevin, who should be key executive of the company he works for, had his greatest electronic games stolen by one of the company's partners, played by David Warner. Kevin must find the evidence inside the computer, if he is to redeem his true status in life. However, he takes a bad turn one night with the MCP who transports him into the world Kevin Flynn helped create, as the MCP turns Kevin, a human, into a computer program.
In the end, Kevin plays a Messiah type figure, who takes on the MCP by sacrificing himself to the MCP to free the system from its evil and make the system a free system in the end. How he reaches his destiny, which also returns him to the real world with the evidence he needs to regain his throne in the corporation, makes for great fun and entertainment as the story unfolds.
Since he has "Christ like" powers as a "user" or "creator" of the system, while in the system; he is even able to "raise the dead" when it comes to one program in particular he falls in love with. He's also able to do things, we only dream about in the real world, in his new environment. It's a cute film to watch and very uplifting once you see the premise it was written from. Great for the whole family.
Excellent "old school" FX film.......2007-08-08
I was 11 years old when I first saw Tron at the theater. Wow! The big screen was definitely the way to go.
Back in 1982, this movie was THE cutting edge in special effects. Nothing else like it had ever been done before. I beleive that most of the naysayers of this film are of a younger generation that grew up watching movies where CGI effects were the norm rather than revolutionary.
Also, the "computer age" was just beginning to emerge from the hands of scientists and big corporations and into the hands of the common man. If you were around back then and old enough to understand what was going on, it was an exciting and scary time. No one really knew what was going to happen in our new "computerized" society, so there was a bit of apprehension and even a bit of paranoia when it came to these big, bulky machines that people were shelling out thousands of dollars for and setting them up in their living rooms and dens.
Tron addresses that apprehension and fear of the future. Of course, computers today are not scary at all and most people give no more thought to using their PC than one would give any extra thought to using a telephone or television. In that respect, Tron may seem dated and silly, but if you remember the computer revolution of the early '80s, Tron was a timely allegory of man's fear of losing control of his life to technology.
Ok. Enough of that.
This is a great DVD packed with LOADS of special features. I especially appreciated the "roots" of Tron and how the characters and ideas developed (as well as the special effects).
Give this movie a try if you're into early '80s nostalgia or if you're curious as to what the common man's outlook was like 25 years ago in regards to the future and technology.
Disney/BuenaVista - TRON.......2007-08-05
Starring Bruce Boxlightner, this movie is now considered a sci-fi classic. It's great entertainment and has a breakthru story for the time period. I think everyone should see it at least once. Features stunning backdrops and sound. I was the first time, I saw it 25 years ago. It's destined to become a legend. Enjoy!
A great movie, though I do have a couple of pet peeves.......2007-07-15
Another perfect example of why today's over-engineered cgi flops look stupid when you compare it to this classic. Most of the scenes are amazing, and flow real well, but there's that occassional misstep. They're easily forgivable, and the grand vision of the movie really makes one think.
Product Description
Something rotten is brewing beneath the industrial mecca known as Raccoon City. Unknown to its millions of residents, a huge underground bioengineering facility known as The Hive has accidentally unleashed the deadly and mutating T-virus, killing all of its employees. To contain the leak, the governing supercomputer, Red Queen, has sealed all entrances and exits. Now a team of highly-trained super commandos including Rain (Michelle Rodriguez - The Fast and the Furious, Girlfight), Alice (Milla Jovovich - The Fifth Element) and Matt (Eric Mabius - Cruel Intentions) must race to penetrate The Hive in order to isolate the T-virus before it overwhelms humanity. To do so, they must get past the Red Queen's deadly defenses, face the flesh-eating undead employees, fight killer mutant dogs and battle The Licker, a genetically mutated savage beast whose strength increases with each of its slain victims.

Marilyn Manson worked on the soundtrack, so it's no surprise that Resident Evil is best enjoyed by headbangers, goth guys, and PlayStation junkies. Like the interactive game it's based on, this horror hybrid pits a small band of SWAT-like commandos (including Milla Jovovich and Girlfight's Michelle Rodriguez) against a ravenous hoard of zombies, resulting in a gorefest that only sociopaths could love. The tenacious heroes are trapped inside the Hive--an underground complex where an evil corporation conducts illegal research with a deadly virus--and the zombies (reanimated corpses of sacrificed employees) are fodder for endless rounds of gunfire. It's utter nonsense (not unlike director Paul W.S. Anderson's previous Event Horizon), so your best defense is to wallow in it or avoid this trash altogether. A few cool sequences are borrowed from better films (that slice-and-dice laser is cribbed from the 1998 Canadian shocker Cube), but if you're in the mood for heavy-metal carnage, this movie's for you. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
This is a GOOD horror/action movie!.......2007-08-29
Yes, it's based off of a video game. Yes, the plot is thin. Were you expecting effin' Shakespeare? This is the best video game to movie adaptation there is. Also, one of the better zombie movies. It's a hell of a lot better than 28 Days Later. And, for my money, better than the remake of Dawn of the Dead. Which was good. This is a movie for people who want to see things shot, blown up, etc. That's why people make/watch these. If you expect more, then you only have yourself to blame and shouldn't trash the movie because of it. All in all this is a great movie as well as the sequel.
Quite possibly the worst film ever made.......2007-08-14
You watch an Ed Wood film, it's bad, but it's fun. It's fun because the director cared, and despite the fact that Ed Wood wasn't a good director, his personality and care is evident in his films.
Resident Evil is made by Paul Anderson, and he quite obviously doesn't care.
Forget what all of you are saying about 'It's another silly zombie movie' or 'It's from a game so I suppose it was always going to be bad'.
The reality is, the games are extremely well executed, as are George A Romero films (G.A.R being the original guy who was to direct this.)
A great story is in the telling, this story was not told well. It could not have been told worse. This guy, quite obviously, has no idea of how to tell a story or direct a film. I trusted him due to Mortal Kombat and Event Horizon, but after Resident Evil and the appauling AVP, it would appear that those first two films are only as good as they are due to good producers and scripts.
Stay away, stay well away.
An absolute travesty in every sense. To think of the millions of lives you could save with the money that was wasted on this garbage.
A very bad joke for fans of the game!.......2007-08-14
This movie is a real nightmare. I'm still hoping to wake up one day and realise that it was just a bad dream. That Paul Anderson never made this movie or that it was made by somebody who actually respected the work of the game creators and the devoted fans. I don't understand what was so hard. The characters and the story were already there. Why did he have to change it completly? Too simple? Even better. S.D. Perry made a good book out of the game. Anderson could have taken some ideas from the book but, noooo! That would've been too easy! Simply change the name of Umbrella, take out the licker and the dogs, then change the name of the movie and nobody will notice that it was suppose to be the adaptation of the game Resident Evil. I hate to admit that it is an entertaining movie but, it's not RE.
Resident Evil Reigns in Action/Horror!.......2007-07-29
This 1st Resident Evil movie directed by AVP director Paul W. S. Anderson was actually pretty darn good. Much better than the next movie in this trilogy, Apocalypse. (But the next one, Extinction, looks the very best!)
But this 1st movie was a thrill ride with solid acting and good action sequences, some never seen before, which is always a good thing. And it ends with a shocker! Leaving the movie watcher wanting more.
Milla Jovovich does her best acting thus far in this movie, carrying the movie that most action women can't do. She didn't do the 2nd movie justice, and didn't look as good either. But then, the whole 2nd movie was a mess. Bad B movie.
This is a B-movie that looks and acts like a grade A movie.
And the third one - Extinction - coming out this September looks like the biggest and best one thus far. Looking forward to it.
The best adaptation.......2007-07-06
I am about ten years from retirement to give you an idea of my age. And yet I enjoy many of the new horror movies if they have something besides all head banging music and tons of gore. This movie will rock your world no matter what age you are. Many adaptations of games do not make it in my replayable list. This one excels there. This is one you will find yourself regularly popping in the player for a revisit of the haunting music, great acting, and scary as hell zombies and other creatures. This is by far one of my favorite horror movies. Well thought out screenplay, excellent directing, and super music score. I give it a high recommendation. I haven't owned a console game since the first Nintendo, but this movie has tempted me to buy a new one even though I prefer the PC versions. By the way I did not care for the last Final Fantasy movie, but I'm sure game console gamers may. This movie although possibly not as appreciated by those with game consoles, will definitely be appreciated by Horror/SciFi movie fans. I recommend the sequel as well. Although not quite as scary, still quite good in the action department.

Laurence Fishburne helped shepherd this Emmy Award-winning exposé from American medical history books to the small screen. Anchored in the 1973 Senate inquiry into the infamous Tuskegee Study, the film uses a flashback structure to take us back 40 years as Nurse Eunice Evers (played with honest conviction by Alfre Woodard, who also earned an acting Emmy for her powerful performance) describes how a program designed to treat syphilis among blacks in the South was twisted into an inhuman study. Evers's conscience is torn between leaving her position on principle or remaining to give the dying men what comfort she can while they are systematically refused life-saving medicine at every turn. Fishburne costars as Caleb, a easygoing but ambitious young fieldhand who discovers the cold reality of the study while courting Miss Evers. Adapted by Walter Bernstein from a play by David Feldshuh, the film rises above the TV Movie of the Week mold with a complex moral structure that eschews (if you'll pardon the expression) black and white polarities for shades of gray as the doctors' initial compromises become a lifetime of lies. Ultimately that tone becomes the most disturbing facet of the drama: doctors and nurses so enmeshed in what is tantamount to a conspiracy they can find no way out, and a government that searches for scapegoats for its own cold-blooded research. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Based on the shocking true story, Miss Evers' Boys exposes a 40-year government backed medical research effort on humans which led to tragic consequences. It is 1932 when loyal, devoted Nurse Eunice Evers (Alfre Woodard) is invited to work with Dr. Brodus (Joe Morton) and Dr. Douglas (Craig Sheffer) on a federally funded program to treat syphilis patients in Alabama. Free treatment is offered to those who test positive for the disease included Caleb Humphries (Laurence Fishburne) and Willie Johnson (Obba Babatunde). But when the government withdraws its funding, money is offered for what will become known as "The Tuskegee Experiment", a study of the effects of syphilis on patients who don't receive treatment. Now the men must be led to believe they are being cared for, when in fact they are being denied the medicine that could cure them. Miss Evers is faced with a terrible dilemma-to abandon the experiment and tell her patients, or to remain silent and offer only comfort. IT is a life or death decision that will dictate the course of not only her life, but the lives of all of Miss Evers' Boys.
Customer Reviews:
Miss Evers was not a victim of the white establishment.......2007-07-26
"Miss Evers Boys" is very difficult to watch. At times, you may have to stop the movie to regain your composure. One scene in particular shows a victim screaming in awful pain. This HBO made for TV story is too sympathetic towards Miss Eunice Evers. As matter of fact, it goes so far as to hint that she was a victim of the white establishment. Nothing could be further from the truth. The woman was truly a vile human being. She freely chose to betray her friends and neighbors infected with syphilis. Her constantly reiterated rationalization that "the doctors know best" is laughable to say the least. At the end, we learn there were never any indictments handed down regarding these Nazi like experiments. Why weren't Miss Evers and Dr. Broadus arrested? Was it because it might damage the politically correct narrative describing them as victims?
SAD TRUTH.......2007-05-10
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR TRUTH AND CAN STAND IT WHEN YOU SEE AND HEAR IT, HERE IS SOMETHING FOR YOU TO WATCH. MASTERFULLY DONE....
black guinea pigs.......2007-05-07
i think all people of african descent should see this movie. this movie gives the true yet tragic story of how the u.s. government treats its african-american citizens. how dare the government feel that it has the right to use live human-beings in a experiment to study the effects of a disease. the very thought of giving a deadly disease to an innocent, unsuspecting group of people. this movie lets you know just how far the government of the u.s. will go to get what it wants.

all young adult men and women need to watch this movie. it was a Great Movie.about things that happen in life.that is not your fault.
Miss Evers' Boys review.......2007-01-11
The movie was an assignment for school. I still found it very interesting and well done. It's a great example of the importance of laws governing the use of human subjects in research. Good information on an ugly piece of US history. Hopefully the lessons reach further than dealings in our own country.

Suffering from the extreme bad luck of being released at the same time as the low-budget The Blair Witch Project, this adaptation of The Haunting of Hill House attempts to update Shirley Jackson's psychologically terrifying ghost story to the era of big-budget, computerized special effects. Does it work? Well, let's just say that showing isn't exactly the same as telling. A prime example of bloated studio filmmaking, The Haunting telegraphs all its frights so blatantly that it forsakes any of Jackson's subtle horrors for the remedial scares of a clunky carnival ride. The story remains basically the same, with four people called to an old mansion for experiments in the supernatural, but instead of getting inside the heads of its main characters (as the 1963 adaptation by Robert Wise did so well), Jan DeBont's film deserts character development for the huge, glorious set design provided by Eugenio Zanetti (Restoration). Thus, instead of a well-drawn story you get... a well-drawn house, one that four very talented and underutilized actors--Lili Taylor, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Liam Neeson, and Owen Wilson--wander around in endlessly (as Zeta-Jones puts it, the house is "sort of Charles Foster Kane meets the Munsters"). Taylor, as the hypersensitive Nell, is the unknowing lynchpin in the battle between good and bad ghosts and gets saddled with most of the expository dialogue of the mansion's gothic backstory. Zeta-Jones (showing some spark) and Neeson (showing none) are sadly reduced to providing reactionary shots of the film's disastrous climax, which mixes hapless new-age affirmations with computer-generated effects of ghosts and exploding windows, walls, doors, etc. For this haunted-house story, take a quick tour of the breathtaking rooms, but definitely don't stay the night. --Mark Englehart
Customer Reviews:
Was this suppose to be scary?!.......2007-09-16
This movie fails in multiple areas but the only area I really care about is the horror. This does not qualify as a horror movie in any way.
Three subjects are suffering from insomnia. They are taken to a haunted mansion to cure their illness. They soon find out they are actually taking place in a study on fear. This movie trys to be scary but for me came off as pretty fun at times and lame. The spirutal special effects aren't too bad and could spook some people. Overall this movie is a rental at best. I didn't find it too boring due to the suspense. But this isn't something I'll watch again on my own free will.
Disgrace.......2007-09-06
Shirley Jackson's novel The Haunting of Hill House is the greatest haunted house story ever written, and the 1963 film version is one of the finer examples of the horror genre ever committed to film, but this illegitimate 1999 re-make is a disgrace to the memory of the author, an inferior descendant of the original movie, and an all-around bad (bad bad bad!) motion picture. Alternating between groaningly, achingly terrible and downright silly, 1999's The Haunting loses its threadbare plot in a special effects quagmire, obliterates any of the greatness it could easily have inherited from this predecessors, fails to make use of the magnificent understated creepiness of the novel, and squanders a talented cast. Not only is it offensive to witness what was done with Shirley Jackson's work, this is just a rotten waste of time to see.
Surprisingly excellent movie and special effects.......2007-08-15
I was very surprised at just how good this movie was. Since, it was made many years ago, I was expecting some less than good special effects. So, I was very pleasantly surprised at just how good the special effects were. The story line is good and the actors all did an excellent job in their roles. I will definitely watch this movie many times.
updated version of 1950's movie.......2007-07-25
I thought this one was okay, up to a point. But if there were a couple of glitches than it would be with the person that they got to play Eleanore in the movie since they got the other three characters spot on, but with Nell it became a total pain after a while especially when they thought that she was losing it. The other was with the house and the issue with the kids souls since that also got annoying after a while too. The first hour was good and spooky, but the 2nd was completely stupid. If you want to see the movie, than you're going to want to see the orignal before you see this one.
This house is haunted.......2007-07-25
I first rented THE HAUNTING after its release in 1999 and was extremely impressed with the state of the art special effects. It managed to capture the essence of the original movie released in 1963 based on Shirley Jackson's novel, THE HAUNTING ON HILL HOUSE. I recently purchased it and somehow was not impressed as the first time (somewhat like a roller coaster ride, it's always the best the first time around), it seemed somewhat dated and lost in translation but still retained many other fine qualities. Lili Taylor did a believable job as the neurotic, insecure, and hypersensitive Nell but let's face it, no one could ever compare to the superb performance of Julie Harris. As the saying goes "it was an evil house from the beginning, a house that was born bad". Dr. Marrow (Liam Neeson) conducts a number of experiments involving the supernatural by using 3 subjects, Nell (Lili Taylor), Theo (Cathrine Zeta Jones), the condescending, superficial fashion plate who's clairvoyant, and Luke (Owen Wilson), the boy nextdoor who's in it for the ride (a spooky one). Nell is particularly drawn to the house, summoned by the very spirits who inhabit the house. She holds the key which will unlock the mysteries to Hill House, forbidden to the outside world. This adaptation could never compare to the original movie which has more atmosphere. There is something about black and white and low tech movies that captures the essence, the marrow itself. Hill House is alive, breathing, morphing, you can feel its very blood flowing through the walls, the pipes, its very foundation, the uncontrollable evil that thrives on good. So prepare yourself, be scared, you've been warned.

We can hardly imagine how shocking this film was when it first broke into the film scene in 1968. There's never been anything quite like it again, though there have been numerous pale imitations. Part of the terror lies in the fact that it is shot in such a raw and unadorned fashion that it feels like a home movie, and is all the more authentic because of that. It draws us into its world gradually, content to establish a merely spooky atmosphere before leading us through a horrifically logical progression that we hardly could have anticipated. The story is simple: Radiation from a fallen satellite has caused the dead to walk, and hunger for human flesh. Once bitten, you become one of them. And the only way to kill one is by a shot or blow to the head. We follow a group holed up in a small farmhouse who are trying to fend off the inevitable onslaught of the dead. The tension between the members of this unstable, makeshift community drives the film. Night of the Living Dead establishes savagery as a necessary condition of life. Marked by fatality and a grim humor, the film gnaws through to the bone, then proceeds on to the marrow. --Jim Gay

George Romero's classic 1968 zombie-fest (shot in black and white) offers some disturbing images, even decades later. In a Pittsburgh suburb people are being stalked by zombies ravenous for human flesh. In a house whose occupant has already been slain, two separate groups of people unite and board themselves in, hoping to fend off the advancing ghouls. Through radio and TV reports they learn that radiation from outer space is thought to be responsible for the wave of zombie attacks all over the eastern United States. Once the humans are trapped, Romero shifts the focus to the internal feuding between them as they decide how to handle their dreadful situation. What unfolds is an examination of human nature, and of the fear and selfishness that keep many citizens from getting involved in the world's problems. Appropriately, both the zombies and the authorities who later hunt them are equally soulless. This film could also be read as a criticism of white males--it is not merely a coincidence that the film's two most rational, constructive characters are a woman and a black man. It is also no coincidence that the sequel takes place in a mall infested by the undead--a perfect analogy for consumer culture. --Bryan Reeseman

Romero's direction is outstanding --- His ability to take a small budget and turn it into a stratospherically giant film is unparalleled.

Romero produced the film on the small budget of $114,000, but after a decade of theatrical re-releases it had grossed an estimated $12 million in the United States and $30 million internationally --- Night of the Living Dead was strongly criticized at the time of its release for its graphic content, but three decades later the Library of Congress entered it into the United States National Film Registry with other films deemed "historically, culturally or aesthetically important."
The culture of Vietnam-era America had a tremendous impact on the film --- It is so thoroughly laden with critiques of late-1960s American society that one historian described the film as "subversive on many levels." --- While not the first zombie film made, Night of the Living Dead influenced countless films and is perhaps the defining influence on the modern pop-culture zombie archetype --- The film is the first of five Dead films (completed or pending) directed by Romero --- It has been remade twice, in 1990 and in 2006.

Okay sorry, I'm jacking around with this review, but I assure you this movie is no joke. It does have a level of humor, ("they're coming for you Barbara!") but it's a far cry from Shaun of the Dead. It shows some extremely brutal scenes, zombies devouring human flesh and a young girl zombie getting crazy with a shovel. The ending is also a disturbing suprise, especially for a film made in "68.
My horror collection feels more respectable now that I've added this to it! The gorehound led me to gory glory.

This is the movie that turned me into an obssesed horror fan. My friend told me about it and let me borrow it and I had no idea this movie would effect me the way it did. Ever since Iv'e been trying to get my hands on any old/underground horror flick I could find. At the beginning of the movie I was thinking "oh god, this is going to suck" and by the end I was convinced that this was one of the best horror films ever made.(*Spoilers*)The idea of somebody making a movie where a little girl eats her mother in 1968 was unbelievable to me. The extremely ironic ending was the icing on the cake and IMO is one of the best endings in horror history. My favorite in the "dead" trilogy by far.
When I first seen this colored version on Amazon I thought it was a disgrace(this movie is made to be watched in B&W and should be watched that way for the first time)but when I realized it contained both versions I had to have it. The commentary is pretty annoying and very insulting to fans of the movie(its done by the guy from "mystery science theater" and he doesn't take the movie seriously at all,it really pisses me off)but if your a fan of the movie and always thought "I wonder what color barbara's shirt is,what color is the car" ect.,ect. I highly recommend this version. If you've never seen this movie I still recommend this version but WATCH THE B&W VERSION FIRST, I repeat WATCH THE B&W VERSION FIRST, its the way it was meant to be seen for the first time.

An ultracreepy blend of horror and fantasy (think of it as Beauty and the Bugs) from Mexican director Guillermo del Toro (Cronos) about giant cockroaches in the subway tunnels beneath Manhattan. Like its DNA-altered spawn (the title refers to the way some insects evolve to resemble their predators), Mimic is not your everyday bug picture, but a more poetic (though quite gruesome) sort of film, literally crawling with bizarre, striking images. In this case, the mutant bugs are not the result of evil atomic experiments (as in Them!), but are the unexpected side effect of work done by an entomologist (Mira Sorvino) and her Center for Disease Control officer husband (Jeremy Northam), who, in a last-ditch effort to control a roach-carried disease epidemic that was killing children, released a genetically altered form of sterile cockroaches beneath the city. They stopped the virus, but... Also starring Charles Dutton, Giancarlo Giannini, F. Murray Abraham, and Josh Brolin. --Jim Emerson
Description
This electrifying thriller features sexy Academy Award(R)-winner Mira Sorvino (ROMY AND MICHELE'S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION) and screen favorite Charles S. Dutton (A TIME TO KILL, ALIEN 3). Their creation has taken on a horrifying life of its own ... able to mimic and destroy its every predator -- even man! And now, it threatens to wipe out an entire city ... unless they stop it in time! A stylish, acclaimed hit featuring riveting performances from a superb cast, MIMIC delivers heart-pounding thrills that never let up!

Mimic (1997).......2006-01-01
Director: Guillermo del Toro
Cast: Mira Sorvino, Jeremy Northam, Alexander Goodwin, Giancarlo Giannini, Charles Dutton, Josh Brolni, Alix Koromzay, F. Murray Abraham, James Costa.
Running Time: 105 minutes
Rated R for terror/violence and language.
"Mimic", like all great genre pictures, exists comfortably in two spheres: on the simple level, it speedily entertains as a gory fright film imbued with mordant humor; on the more difficult level, it provides symbolism and thematic undertow. Best of all, these two levels often work at the same time, such as when an old priest gets tossed off a building by one of the creatures, plummeting past a neon "Jesus Saves" sign, and crashing to a gory death on the pavement. A little while later, the creature drags the dead body into the gaping black maw of an open sewer. The latter is what "Mimic" is really really for: the importance of breeding and offspring. The movie's surreal opening, with its rows of linen-canopied hospital beds all in a row like so many little coffins, shows us sick children, gasping for air because a cockroach-borne disease is carrying them off. The battle lines are drawn in the first few moments: Us versus Them. Scientists Mia Sorvino and Jeremy Northam glean the cure for the dread disease by concocting a genetically-altered bug whose secretions kill off the diseased cockroaches; "Judas Breed", as it's called, will be the only true breed this couple will engender: Sorvino fails pregnancy tests at home, while their creature, supposedly unable to reproduce, grows apace underneath Manhattan's fallopian sewers. It merely seems like "nature's way" that the Judas Breed has mutated to the size of six feet, and can mimic standing upright like their human prey, It's also fitting that these creatures instinctively hone in on the vulnerability of children: they viciously rip apart two kids, and befriend another who has managed to communicate with them by clicking soup-spoons together.
This is an atmospheric thriller from Guillermo del Toro, director of "The Devil's Backbone" and "Cronos", who manages to mix great direction with good old fashioned monster horror to great effect. The concept itself is clever, even if the idea of bugs evolving to look very like humans is a little fa-fetched; however, once the action moves to the subway the fact that the bugs are clearly lethal no matter what they look like, makes this less important. The film is quite short and makes the action come quicker and seem more urgent. Several people get killed by the bug that wouldn't usually get killed in this sort of horror (children for example), this is very effective as it is quite scary to see the unexpected happen. The mood is dark throughout and Del Toro uses the sewers and subway to great effect, creating a real sense of claustrophobia, like the humans have entered the bug's world and not the other way round. The bugs are shown early on in the film - usually not a good idea (keep it hidden in the "Jaws" way), but here the special effects are good enough to make the bug really believable, yet the horror is not in seeing the bugs but in they way they hunt and kill, but the fear is in what could happen. The cast are great, Sorvino especially is very good in the lead. Jeremy Northam and Charles S. Dutton are good in support and Abraham Murray adds a bit of cameo class (though his role is quite unnecessary). The director is the real star, adding some genuine scares and real mood to a film that could have easily been just another creature-feature that goes straight to video and straight to the back of your mind. Overall a superior creature horror film.
Smart movie, goes over most reviewer's heads........2005-10-16
Mimic is an extremely smart movie that respects the intelligence of its audience, and that may be its greatest downfall.
I won't go into the atmosphere and effects, allo of which are excellent. The other reviews here pretty much cover that gambit to good effect. It's a great horror flick, crawling with the sort of subtle and interesting touches that give good movies that 'something extra'.
My peeve isn't with the movie itself, but rather with the "dumbed-down" advertising and descriptions that lead to all sorts of miscomprehensions in reviews, not to mention a couple of bad sequels that took off in a very-wrong direction.
If one were to read and accept these reviews, and had any understanding of genetics or evolution, they'd be prone to dismiss the movie off-hand. Don't make that mistake. The story simply went over their head.
This isn't a dumb monster flick. Much the opposite, it's so smart the copywriters and reviewers didn't "get" some of its more intelligent aspects.
Just see it!
Beauty and the Bugs.......2005-07-12
Not bad for a Mexican director I'm impress. This movie has giant mutant cockroaches living in the subways of New York their always killing people cause of them being attractive to human blood if a human put the cockroaches blood all over him they won't attack that human. These bugs are big all cause of an entomologist name Mira Sorvino and her husband. In order to kill all the bugs they have to kill the male he's the king.
Nice concept, Above average movie.......2005-05-16
The idea of a genetic mutation miscalculation which leads to the higher evolution of insects to adopt human ways is not impossible. Del Toro took a very X-file-ish theme and created a very enjoyable sci-fi thriller. The movie was very fast paced and both the horror and suspense elements were done just right, not too little and not too overdone.
A few things I didn't like about this film was some of its more subtle things. Mira Sorvino was playing an entomologist, yet when she studies or investigate specimens, she takes no logical safety precautions. The same recklessness occurs repeatedly for her and every other cast throughout movie. Things like touching bugs that likely carry unknown diseases with your bare hands, or when they go underground to hunt for the roaches without any type of scientific or safety equipments is just very illogical to me. To think that in the beginning of the movie, the city undergone a catastrophic epidemic that were spread by roaches and for them to go on the rest of the movie every time without any planning or taking precaution is just unthinkable. The plot was nicely written and the story flowed well, but the reckless actions from supposedly "experts" just kills it. It doesn't just happen once or twice, but every single time. A number of scenes also seemed very forced and felt like they were put there just so the story can continue the way the director wanted, yet they made no logical sense.
Despite the few imperfections, this movie is still a great watch. I definitely recommend a rental if you are looking for a nice action thriller to kill a saturday night.
Life will Find a Way.......2005-04-24
That quote from JURASSIC PARK always comes to mind in films like MIMIC.
A scientist finds a way to beat a horrible disease crippling and killing children, but the method used is not fully thought through. One senior geneticist is ignored, and the JUDAS bug is implemented. And what they have done is accelerate the genetic process by many thousands of generations in a short space of time ... in a species that was engineered to "die out".
The acting is top notch, casting has people perfect for the role, and this stellar cast delivers in spades.
ENJOY.

Description
A true cult classic - and one of the scariest movies of all time. The dead are walking, and hunger for human flesh. A group of panicked survivors are barricaded in a deserted farmhouse while the army of flesh-eating zombies hovers outside their door.
Now experience the bone-chilling terror in color for the first time on DVD. With a 5.1 surround sound remix, and a hilarious commentary track by Mike Nelson, this is the most fun you'll ever have with the living dead.

Romero --- Early drafts of the script were titled Monster Flick, but it was known as Night of Anubis and Night of the Flesh Eaters during production --- The film stars Duane Jones as Ben and Judith O'Dea as Barbra --- The plot revolves around the mysterious reanimation of the dead and the efforts of Ben, Barbra and five others to survive the night while trapped in a rural Pennsylvania farmhouse.
Under George A. Romero (Director / Screenwriter / Short Story Author / Cinematographer / Editor), Karl Hardman (Producer / Makeup), Russ Streiner (Producer), John A. Russo (Screenwriter), Vincent Survinski (Production Designer), Marilyn Eastman (Makeup), Tony Pantanello (Special Effects), Regis Survinski (Special Effects) - - - - The story line and plot, Zombies represent a slow moving enemy --- It is easy to escape them, just watch out for your own mistakes, as the zombies will capitalize on them --- One of the best aspects of this film is the lead character, as director Romero presents an intelligent non stereotypical black actor in this cult favorite ---. this is one of the best horror films ever.

The Zombie Crunch.......2007-08-06
Okay, I finally reached the mountaintop, the mecca of horror, the zombie garden of Eden, the Brady Bunch of brutality...
It's the story
of some lovely ladies
who were hiding with
some very lovely guys
All of them were f&%#in' scared
and missed their mother
the youngest one will cry
It's the story
of some f%#@in' zombies
who were busy
with appetites of their own
They were once men
dead and buried
now they scream and moan
Till the one day
when the zombies smelled these people
and they knew it was much more
than just lunch
That the undead must get into that farmhouse
That's the way they all
became the zombie crunch
The zombie crunch
Okay sorry, I'm jacking around with this review, but I assure you this movie is no joke. It does have a level of humor, ("they're coming for you Barbara!") but it's a far cry from Shaun of the Dead. It shows some extremely brutal scenes, zombies devouring human flesh and a young girl zombie getting crazy with a shovel. The ending is also a disturbing suprise, especially for a film made in "68.
My horror collection feels more respectable now that I've added this to it! The gorehound led me to gory glory.
The one ,the only........2007-07-14
