Packed with more than 750 dazzling visual effects, this $70 million adventure does more (and less) than give the 1965-68 TV series a state-of-the-art face-lift. Aimed at an audience that wasn't born when the series originally aired, the sci-fi extravaganza doesn't even require familiarity, despite cameo appearances by several of the TV show's original cast members. Instead it's a high-tech hybrid of the original premise with enough sensory overload to qualify as a spectacular big-screen video game, supported by a time-travel premise that's adequately clever but hardly original. It's certainly never boring, and visually it's an occasionally awesome demonstration of special effects technology. But in its attempt to be all things to all demographics, the movie's more of a marketing ploy than a satisfying adventure, thankfully dispensing with the TV show's cheesy camp but otherwise squandering a promising cast in favor of eye-candy and ephemeral storytelling. In keeping with the movie's high-tech appeal, the DVD is a feature-packed marvel, including two audio commentaries, deleted scenes, two featurettes covering special effects and the original TV series (featuring complete biographies and episode guides), the original screenplay, and interactive games. --Jeff Shannon

2 out of 5 stars Good - Not Great.......2007-09-17

It could have been better, just by using story lines that have been used and re-used. That would have been more entertaining. Its based on the 1960's TV show and copies the events of the first episode, so they could have made a sequal that could have been better. The Robinson family launches into outerspace on a pro-longed foyage, only their course is altered because of excessive weight from a stow-away, the infamous, selfish and trouble making Dr. Smith. They wake early from stasis and know only that they don't know where they are. Great concept, just very poor execution.

3 out of 5 stars Would have been a good graphic novel.......2007-09-15

Keeping the same plot and dialog, and done in comic book form, Lost In Space would probably have been very good. Creatively, it had a lot on its side. Its vision of what future clothes and hardware will be like (besides the hyperdrive and the seemingly indestructable Jupiter 2) actually seems plausible and insightful. The time travel storyline may not be entirely consistent, but sets up some intruiging causality violation what-ifs, and the set design and lighting are interesting and occasionally evocative, if a bit too gloomy. The direction is efficient and fun and worthy of imitation and the score is worth buying. In other words, it had potential.

But then you hear the script spoken aloud and somehow it suddenly hits you how implausable large chunks of the story are and how badly the screenwriter's dialog translates to the screen. Also hindering the whole affair is the near ubiquitous bad acting. The only actors who truly do their jobs well are Gary Oldman and the two children. The film's computer generated space effects are imaginative but the technology of the time simply wasn't as good as model work, which is distracting. Meanwhile, the story plays havoc with physics, which is distracting to people who know anything above average about science, though this reviewer is willing to be forgiving with regards to that, simply because one gets the sense that the screenwriter at least thought he was doing the science justice.

Lost In Space isn't a bad movie and its not quite a good movie. So get some nachos, take it for what it is, and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Big Budget Multi-Demographic.......2007-09-06

You have to judge this movie purely on it's own merits. Forget about what it's based on. I liked the actors but not the childish dialogue or the Mimi Rogers speeches. I liked the ambitious tone and look of the movie. The science is plausible tho highly improbable. Hyper space(higher dimensional space) and time travel(to the future) are theoretical concepts and most likely where they'll forever stay. Dr. Smith is an excellent scoundrel given contradictory lines. At first it's political belief and then it's 'evil knows evil'. Like I said, the dialogue in this film is very 'Hollywood'(catch phrases substituting for substance). The movie is too short. It never gives you a chance to savor. The cute little alien is never explained. Where did it come from ? How the heck did it get there ? The primary demographic is the 10 year old suburban kid but in targeting that demographic you also get the rest of the family because the kids can't drive themselves to the theatre. Ofcourse but through all it's obvious flaws, I still kind of like this movie. I also like the way the theme song was remade. Call it a visceral thing if you will but I won't be giving this one away anytime soon.

1 out of 5 stars Lost In The Re-write.......2007-04-12

I assume that at some point this project had a much better script than the final one in order to get William Hurt and others involved. I'll hold that in my mind as the only way they would get into this mess. It has action and special effects enough for 4 movies, but the plot is all over the map and never congeals into anything special. With the talent and money that they must have had this is one poor excuse of a movie.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Under-rated.......2007-03-13

I would give it four thumbs up if I had four hands! The special effects are spectacular, the cast work together, and the storyline keeps you watching. Would love to have seen a sequel to this one....oh, and Penny Robinson is just as cute as she can be.

The main draw of these low-budget horror pictures is their unabashed affection for the great horror movies of the past. In Waxwork, Zach Galligan and his teen friends investigate a wax museum, where they are menaced by the re-animated tableaux. It's about as energetic as a wax dummy. The sequel is livelier, with Galligan now passing through a time portal that transports him to various classic film scenarios: Frankenstein, Dawn of the Dead, Alien, and, briefly and amusingly, Nosferatu (that's Drew Barrymore as one of the virgins cowering in bed). But why no parody of Vincent Price in House of Wax? It goes on too long, but there are weird celebrity guest stars aplenty (Bruce Campbell, David Carradine, Martin Kemp). Director Anthony Hickox helmed both offerings, without quite deciding how much humor was too much humor. In short, genre cultists are pretty much the exclusive audience here. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Great value for money & horror classics too!.......2007-06-04

I was a teenager when I first watched Waxwork and even till today, this is one of my favorite horror movies. It may seem cheesy and campy, but the storyline remains fresh and creatively conceptualized. Six high school friends decide to check out the new waxwork in town, and obtain a special preview invitation one night. The museum pays homage to some of history's more famous monsters, such as Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, The Mummy, even the Marquis de Sade. Two friends, Mark [Zach Gilligan] and Sarah [Deborah Foreman] suspect something amiss when two of their friends go missing after the first private showing. They discover to their horror, that if they step into the area of each exhibit, they will enter into the 'real' world of that exhibit, e.g. stepping into the Dracula exhibit literally transports the victim into Dracula's castle and all the wax exhibits come to life, devouring their victims in their own 'special' way. The plot moves along at a thrilling pace, and the different scenarios add to the fun and thrills. It is great campy fun of the most deliciously horrifying kind, and definitely a classic. Getting Waxwork Two along with Waxwork is added value for money.

3 out of 5 stars Fullscreen Basic Cable Version.......2007-02-28

This movie should be labeled : Fullscreen. Edited for Content. Bandwidth Compressed. It looks like someone taped it from a Basic Cable broadcast on SLP. Some scenes are completely missing, others just edited for content. The movie itself is interesting, just Not the Real version. Not unrated, Not R, maybe PG, though not PG-13. It is now Bland.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden Gem.......2006-10-04

Here is a film that has come onto the scene under the scope of the major hollywood films. A very underrated film that should be a major hit in the US. It is a humorous and horrorific movies that does justice to the genres that they are in. A must have!

5 out of 5 stars TAKE A CLOSER LOOK!!!!!.......2006-08-05

Waxwork and Waxwork 2 are very inovating horror films. Now we can enjoy both movies on one disk!!! Great "POPCORN" movies from the "AWESOME 80's!!! I just purchased this dvd and Waxwork pt 1, is the UNRATED version... so your seeing all the blood and gore, especially in the Wereolf and the Vampire slayer scenes. Waxwork--UNRATED and Waxwork 2---RATED R. Hope this helped anyone. "Steak Tar Tar anyone?" ENJOY!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Waxworks and Waxworks 2.......2005-08-28

I know these movies are a little campy, but I like them. Especially the different scenes of the wax figures and their different story lines. Hollywood could almost make a movie or series about different scary time-travelers every week. The acting is so-so, this movie is a "drive-in" type movie. Waxworks 2 is a little deeper than Waxworks 1, but the story is more involved, and the lead character is the same actor. It doesn't explain a lot of little nuances, but then again, it's not Oscar material. If you want a good semi-scary/ funny movie for a Saturday nite, then these two movies would do it. One more thing, there are a few surprise guest actors in the movies, especially Waxworks 2,like David Carradine (of Kill Bill), and Drew Barrymore, among others.

The sad fact faced by all fans of the BBC's long-running science fiction series Doctor Who is that nearly half of the 200+ episodes are considered lost or incomplete due to improper storage. However, episodes and tantalizing glimpses of "orphaned" stories from the reign of the first Doctor, William Hartnell (1963-66) have been culled together from 16 and 35mm prints and restored for this set. The most noteworthy treasure is "Day of Armageddon," the second episode in the epic 12-part story from season 3, "The Daleks' Master Plan," which has been unseen by the public since its initial airing in 1965. Also among the recently recovered is "The Lion," the first episode of season's 2's "The Crusade." The only other surviving episodes from these stories--episodes 5 and 10 from "The Daleks' Master Plan," and episode 3 from "The Crusade" (audio tracks and narrative links for the second and fourth episodes of this story are also included), as well as the sole remaining episode (#4, "The Final Test") from "The Celestial Toymaker" (featuring veteran actor Michael Gough) round out the disc. The DVD extras include fragments from the lost episodes of "The Daleks' Master Plan" and season 4's "The Smugglers" and "The Tenth Planet," all rescued from a variety of far-flung places; also included is commentary by actor Julian Glover for episode 3 of "The Crusade" and actors Peter Purves and Kevin Stoney, along with designer Raymond Cusick for "Day of Armaggedon," and some 8mm off-screen footage from the Hartnell era. Viewers can also access introductions to and an afterword for "The Crusade" (taken from the original VHS release) by accessing the "Play All" option on the main menu.

As with the First Doctor, a number of episodes and stories from Patrick Troughton's Second Doctor tenure (1966-69) are also incomplete or missing altogether, so The Patrick Troughton Years attempts to reconstruct the "orphaned" stories through episodes and clips culled from a variety of sources. For Who historians, the most important footage here is from Troughton's first appearance as the Doctor in season 5's "The Power of the Daleks," which is missing in its entirety; a rough glimpse of the transition from actor William Hartnell to Troughton is included, along with other surviving fragments. The complete episodes offered here are the sole remaining episode from season 4's "The Underwater Menace" (fragments from this story are included in the extras), episodes 2 and 4 from "The Moonbase," which features the return of the Cybermen (audio from episodes 1 and 3 is featured in the extras), episodes 1 and 3 from "The Faceless Ones," and episode 2 from "The Evil of the Daleks" (which includes commentary by actress Deborah Watling, who played the Doctor's companion, Victoria). Disc 2 marks the only episode from the Yetis' debut in "The Abominable Snowmen" (Watling again provides commentary), two episodes from "The Wheel in Space" (with commentary by director Tristan de Vere Cole and story editor Derrick Sherwin) and just one apiece for "The Web of Fear," "The Space Pirates," and "The Enemy of the World." Chief among the extras is the 1998 documentary The Missing Years, which interviews several of the film collectors responsible for rescuing these lost episodes and fragments (the doc has been updated to reflect the 2004 discovery of two William Hartnell episodes); the supplemental features offer fragments and behind-the-scenes footage from "The Macra Terror" (with a rare clip of the monsters), "Fury from the Deep" (which includes a scene reconstruction), "The Highlanders," and the aforementioned stories.

The William Hartnell Years and the Patrick Troughton Years are also available individually. Either scenario is sure to please the die-hard Doctor Who fan. --Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars Good for those that are Dr. Who fans.......2007-05-21

I think this is a product for those that are Dr. Who fans and you just can't get enough of anything to do with The Doctor. There are complete episodes BUT NO complete story lines, so you kind of have to take that for what it's worth. Some of the Hartnell episodes are sound only. That's a little tough to go through, but still fun. I do not regret getting this as I consider myself a pretty good fan. I'm not overboard, but not a casual fan either. I enjoyed seeing what some of the missing episodes were like and was able to distance myself from having closure on each story line. There are three different versions of these lost, rare episodes available, and this is the best because it includes all of the episodes currently available. There is a copy of each of the first two Drs. Doctor Who - Lost in Time Collection of Rare Episodes - The William Hartnell Years 1963-1966 and Doctor Who Lost in Time Collection of Rare Episodes - The Patrick Troughton Years 1966-1969 and this copy of both combined Doctor Who - Lost in Time Collection of Rare Episodes - The William Hartnell Years and the Patrick Troughton Years. This copy contains everything on both those first two and then a few extra episodes found after that. So, I'd recommend this over the others if you are a fan.

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother buying it........2007-02-24

My husband was VERY disapointed with this collection! Sure there are lost episodes, but they jump around and the whole set of the series isn't there.

I too was very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars "People spend all their time making nice things, and then other people come along and break them.".......2007-02-10

Something about "Doctor Who" certainly inspires dedication in the show's fans. There is not really a single complete storyline in this whole DVD set, just scattered, random fragments of storylines. One or two episodes out of four or six, three episodes out of twelve--merely bits and pieces. And yet we find ourselves watching them with all the enthusiasm of a classical scholar who has come across some stray pages from the Library of Alexandria. Sure, it'd be nice to have the whole archive complete, but barring that, these fragmentary glimpses of the show in its formative years are a treasure.

Different folks will come to this with different preferences, of course. I myself was especially enthralled by the bits from "The Moonbase" and "The Wheel in Space"--both for the vintage early appearances of the Cybermen and for the classic "space age" manner in which the future was envisioned. The long, fantastically involved bits from "The Dalek's Masterplan" were neat for similar reasons, though set in a much more distant future. As someone with an interest in Asian religions, I found the setting of "The Abominable Snowmen" in a Buddhist monastery to be particularly noteworthy. And in "The Faceless Ones" seeing the Tardis materialize on an airport landing strip (of all places) was priceless. These were some of the highlights for me, but the whole thing was enjoyable overall.

Of course, it must be said that this is enjoyment of a very masochistic sort. There you are, getting into the story, mesmerized by William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton's incredible performances, thrilled by the threats of enemies familiar and unfamiliar, following along as the plot thickens and the suspense quickens...right up until the episode's cliffhanger. And that's it. You'll never see what happens next. I found myself shouting in dismay almost every time, as if I didn't know this was inevitable from the start. But for diehard followers of the renegade Time Lord's saga, it's well worth it.

3 out of 5 stars Early Doctor.......2007-01-11

This was interesting in that you get to see the early Doctor. However I didn't know that some of the episodes weren't complete and all you hear is the audio because the film has been lost to time. It would be nice if there was some kind of warning to the consumer about what they were really getting.

5 out of 5 stars WAy Cool Show.......2006-10-31

I can't say enough about this show. It is just so far out and way way cool. I mean like wow. This collection of shows really puts a spin on my brain. Great scripts an cool acting.

My 8th graders had to be kept awake. Avoid this video at all costs.

3 out of 5 stars History of Japan.......2007-01-08

This 50-minute documentary is an overview of Japanese history through the 19th century, with special attention to the samurai and to architectural treasures of Japan.

The filmmakers didn't seem to have a clear sense of what they were trying to do in this film. If you want to learn about Japanese history, this is a decent overview, but you may wish there were somewhat less attention given to the samurai and to individual architectural treasures. If you're particularly interested in the samurai, you'll learn how they fit into Japanese history, and you'll learn about their armor and swords and "the way of the warrior," but you may be disappointed that the samurai aren't actually the focus of the film. And if you're particularly interested in Japanese architecture, you'll learn a bit about that, but again, it isn't the focus of the film.

A better documentary on Japanese history (from the 16th through 19th centuries) is "Japan: Memoirs of a Secret Empire" from the PBS "Empires" series.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent AP World History Review.......2006-11-05

The title "Lost Treasures" may be misleading, but it is a treasure to AP World History teachers and students. The documentary touches on all the major points of Japanese history from Nara/Heian through the feudal period to its opening by America in the 19th century. On the downside, it moves a little slow and does not have a lot of pizazz.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.. But not bad .......2006-06-03

It is an interesting movie I'd have to say.. But it doesn't talk primarily about the samurais of Japan. It talks more about the history of Japan, how it was introduced to Buddhism and Christianity afterwards; it also talks about its most famous surviving architecture. The movie doesn't quite hold its title; it should be called (the history of Japan) or something like that. So if you were like me, looking for more details about the samurais you will not find this one very informative in some sense.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining, although obvious. Many fine actresses........2007-08-07

This is an early 1990s TV movie (hence, it's full screen). It hits all the usual emotional buttons.

As four student nurses fly to a clinic in the Mexican jungle, along with some doctors, one of their three planes crashes. The other two planes land. Then the nurses and remaining doctors must find the group that went down, treat them, and arrange to fly them out to an advanced American hospital.

This film is full of cliches and stereotypes. Poor but noble peasants who are honest and generous with their meager belongings rally to help the doctors who helped them. Corrupt Mexican soldiers and government officials are callously indifferent to the doctors' plight. Evil drug lords lurk menacingly in the jungle, posing a potential threat to the doctors. Banditos rob the downed plane. Mexican-American student nurse Jennifer Lopez visits a local Catholic church, lighting a candle, to the warmly smiling approval of the poor villagers.

One patient "dies." Two doctors declare him dead. But a gutsy, spunky student nurse refuses to accept that, and she manages to revive the patient, proving herself smarter than the doctors! (Give me a break!)

This is a predictable film, and hard to believe it's all true. It's supposedly based on a true story, but I suspect they embellished heavily.

Still, it has many good actresses. Lindsay Wagner is the star; she plays an older student nurse who went back to college after divorcing her doctor-husband. She worries that others think she's too old. Farrah Forke is another nurse. Some may remember her as "Alex" from the WINGS sitcom. And it's always nice to see Jennifer Lopez. She has a small cliched role as another nurse, one who ruminates about her Mexican roots (her poor peasant father had immigrated from Mexico, and she's the first of her family to go into medicine).

Contrary to the DVD cover, Jennifer Lopez's part is small. Although this is an ensemble film, Lindsay Wagner is the lead star; Lopez is a minor supporting player.

An enjoyable TV movie, if you like the actresses and don't mind the cliches.

4 out of 5 stars Jennifer Lopez - The Beginning!.......2005-06-29

While heading towards a makeshift medical outpost deep into the Mexican jungle, one of three planes crashes, stranding a group of doctors and student nurses, some of whom are critically injured. This taut adventure follows the attempts of the others to locate the downed plane and save the lives of the survivors. Once the search party finds the injured medics, their next challenge is to get them to a proper medical facility. One in particular could die any moment. The searchers could have treated them on the spot had not local natives appeared and looted the downed plane of its drugs. A nearby landing strip promises a chance to get the injured passengers to safety, but unfortunately that would precipitate a night flight and recent anti-drug operations laws strictly prohibit flying after dark. One brave doctor volunteers to traverse the jungle to a nearby town in hopes of convincing authorities to make an exception. Meanwhile the rest of the entourage must somehow make it safely to the airstrip by daylight.

A number of episodes and stories from actor Patrick Troughton's turn as Doctor Who (1966-69) are either incomplete or missing altogether, much to the dismay of series fans. However, this two-disc set attempts to reconstruct the "orphaned" stories through episodes and clips culled from a variety of sources. Disc 2 marks the only episode from the Yetis' debut in "The Abominable Snowmen" (Watling again provides commentary), two episodes from "The Wheel in Space" (with commentary by director Tristan de Vere Cole and story editor Derrick Sherwin) and just one apiece for "The Web of Fear," "The Space Pirates," and "The Enemy of the World."

Chief among the extras is the 1998 documentary The Missing Years, which interviews several of the film collectors responsible for rescuing these lost episodes and fragments (the doc has been updated to reflect the 2004 discovery of two William Hartnell episodes); the supplemental features offer fragments and behind-the-scenes footage from "The Macra Terror" (with a rare clip of the monsters), "Fury from the Deep" (which includes a scene reconstruction), "The Highlanders," and the aforementioned stories. As with the William Hartnell disc, the Patrick Troughton Years is available for U.S. buyers as a stand-alone two-disc set and as part of a three-disc box with the Hartnell disc, while U.K. buyers will receive only the box; either scenario is sure to please the die-hard Doctor Who fan. --Paul Gaita

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars For true dr.who fans! Especially Troughton fans!.......2004-12-29

What a great buy. I usually ignore the over priced dr. who dvd's and go for the used vhs editions instead. What little Troughton I've seen has been a joy to watch so this was a easy buy since it seemed to be a well packed 2 disc dvd set. I actually feel lucky to be able to view these gems, both video and audio. TO hear the old 'thud' they used for the Tardis landing and the original (reamstered?) theme is worth the price alone. WHen you see the strings attached to spaceships you know you've come home again :-)

The picture is B&W crystal clear (great job), the episodes are the sci-fi type (no historical stories, yeah!) and the sound is very good considering the time period it was shot. Who knows what condition these episodes were in before they got the treatment.

I think including the audio only for the remaining missing parts is genious. Just lay back n close your eyes and listen. Pray to the gods of Zena or the PTB more of the lost Troughton (and Hartnell) episodes will be discovered, restored, and released. Also I hope the new series is good enough to run a few seasons.

Note to the bbc: lower the prices of these dvd's, you'll get more fans. For what I paid for this set I could have got a complete season of Angel or Buffy.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing Patchwork.......2004-12-14

I was somewat disappointed by this patchwork as it has no complete story at all. While the Moonbase and the Crusade offer Audio for the missing episodes there is no commentary so you are left to wonder what is happening in the silences.

I expected more from the BBC

The episodes that are shown are captivating and do give an insight into the quality and occasional lack of quality that makes up Doctor Who.

The Underwater Menace with its string transported Fish People and exaggerated evil madman was quite amusing.

Yes the Show was great what a shame the DVD production is not.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for collectors.......2004-12-13

This collection is a must for true Doctor Who fans and especially those who like Patrick Troughton, the Second Doctor. As has been said in other reviews, so many of the Troughton and Hartnell episodes were either destroyed or lost. So what we have here is a hodgepodge of existing episodes, clips, and even audio tracks.

There's really only one full story here and that's "The Moonbase." All four parts exist but episodes #1 & #3 exist as audio tracks only. However all exisiting audio & video are presented here. I admire the BBC for putting out the audio tracks of this gem from Troughton's first year as the Doctor but it's a shame that they didn't utilize more of the exisiting photographs to give it a little bit of extra life. It was annoying listening to a 20 minute audio track with just a single picture of a Cyberman staring back from the TV screen.

Along with "The Moonbase," you're getting episodes from "The Faceless Ones," "The Underwater Menace," "The Evil of the Daleks," "The Enemy of the World," "The Abominable Snowman," "The Enemy of the World," "The Web of Fear," "the Wheel in Space," and "The Space Pirates."

You're also getting some BBC promotional clips, 10-15 second clips from scattered episodes, images shot off TV screens, and even a 10 minute 8mm documentary called "The Last Dalek," which showed some of the production techniques used to bring the famous metallic menaces to life.

By far this is a great DVD for fans and collectors but is of little value to the casual Doctor Who viewer.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the price of admission.......2004-11-17

This thing should be selling for about 15 bucks. You are getting about an hour and a half of damaged episodes.
The box and cover make it look like you are getting a complete compilation but the "collection of rare episodes" should say "a collection of footage from missing episodes". This again is NOT a box set of all Troughton episodes, and is VERY OVER PRICED.

If you want the entire doctor who collection go mortgage your home because it'll cost you over $5,000 to do it. Get every Trek episode from all shows and you'll run about $2,500 for twice the viewing time. I think the BBC needs to seriously rethink their pricing scheme.

4 out of 5 stars Lost in time... but worth the find!.......2004-11-08

As most Doctor Who fans know, there are huge gaps in the archives for the black and white era of the show that featured the first two actors to play the role, William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton. Due to a total disregard for archiving material and, criminally, as a cost cutting exercise, there was a systematic junking policy for `expired' TV shows across many broadcast networks through to the 1970's. In many ways, Doctor Who fared better than most with many complete stories surviving either in private hands or more often by happy accidents.

Although anything to have survived is miraculous, in many cases, irritatingly, stories were left incomplete on the archive shelves. Pretty much useless to any broadcaster and indeed seemingly for home DVD or video release. But the bright guys at the BBC have spotted a way to gather up all this stray material and package it together on a collection of three discs featuring not only eighteen complete episodes but a whole myriad of other snippets and gems from the vaults.

As a huge Doctor Who fan, I was thrilled to see all these homeless relics gathered together, but from a wider commercial viewpoint, I don't think it's a particularly interesting project. But isn't it wonderful for fans to be indulged in this way? I'd never seen either episodes of The Faceless Ones before, so this was a real treat, as it was to see the newly discovered gem from The Daleks' Master Plan.

The problem for me is that alone, or even where two or more episodes exist, it's exceptionally frustrating to watch what remains of these stories. If you're watching episode one for example, you're completely hooked by the end and then hugely disappointed that there is no more! For stories that just have the odd episode from the middle of the story, it's enough to drive you barmy. My biggest irritation came from watching episode 4 of The Celestial Toymaker. What on earth is going on? It would have been so, so much better had the DVD contained a synopsis of what was missing to help flesh out some of the material and put things into context. Definitely an opportunity missed. In a step towards this, there are soundtracks included for two missing episodes from The Crusade and The Moonbase, which does help complete those stories, but since photos exist of both missing episodes, why weren't they included? When all there is to hear is music or sound effects, it leaves you bewildered as to what might be happening. A photo or a subtitle would have been so much more effective.

Also gathered from the cutting room floor are many, many short clips (in some cases, don't blink or you'll miss them) from other completely deleted episodes. It's sad that in so many cases these split second clips are all that have remained. There's also a lot of home movie footage, which is really interesting. I believe this to be the only color examples of footage from the era and although short, they are wonderful to see.

We can but hope that as time goes on, some of the missing material will turn up. No one would have thought the complete Tomb of the Cybermen would suddenly reappear in 1992. So hope springs eternal. Until then, here's some classic Who, brilliantly restored and remastered to enjoy.

The sad fact faced by all fans of the BBC's long-running science fiction series Doctor Who is that nearly half of the 200+ episodes are considered lost or incomplete due to improper storage. However, episodes and tantalizing glimpses of "orphaned" stories from the reign of the first Doctor, William Hartnell (1963-66) have been culled together from 16 and 35mm prints and restored on this disc.

The William Hartnell Years is available in the U.S. as a single disc and in a three-disc box with a double disc of rare episodes from the Patrick Troughton era; however, the Hartnell disc is only available to U.K. buyers in the boxed set. Either way, it's a must-have for Doctor Who completists. --Paul Gaita

We became intrigued with the new version of Dr. Who, but when in Britain recently, came upon an exhibit of the original Dr. Who, quite a celebrity there. This DVD brings the viewer back to Dr. Who as it originally was conceived, and is great fun, although I have to say that I prefer the modern version.

4 out of 5 stars A chance to see rare episodes!.......2004-07-25

This release contains six episodes of early Doctor Who, but unlike practically every other release, these are assorted episodes from a variety of stories. The sad fact is that not every episode of the series survived to the present day. Many of the earliest were destroyed, but fortunately, not all of them. As a result, this collection doesn't really contain a complete story, but what it does offer, is a fascinating look at what exists from these incomplete stories. The other postitive thing is that these episodes have never been aired on US television!

    As for the goodies inside:

THE CRUSADE 1 & 3 - A historical story in which the Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Vicki encounter the era of King Richard the Lionhearted, (played by Julian Glover), and his sister Joanna (played by Jean Marsh). A four-part story originally, the second and fourth parts are included on the DVD in audio-only format, so you can experience the complete story as much as is humanly possible. Also, as a bonus, there is a commentary track for the third episode.

THE DALEKS' MASTER PLAN 2, 5 & 10 - These three episodes are all that remain from this epic 12-part adventure, (and in fact the second episode was only just discovered at the beginning of 2004, and has never been seen anywhere since its original transmission in 1965!) This story features the Doctor and his companion Steven, with seldom seen companions Katarina and Sara Kingdom. This story also features the first appearance of Nicholas Courtney, who would gain fame later in the program as the Brigadier. Plus, it has Daleks! Episode 2 also features a commentary track.

THE CELESTIAL TOYMAKER 4 - The final part of a 4-part adventure, featuring the Doctor, Steven and Dodo playing a deadly game against the Celestial Toymaker, (played by Michael Gough, perhaps better known in this day and age as Alfred the Butler in the Batman movies of the 1990's). Great fun this one is.

As if that wasn't enough, the DVD release also features a variety of surviving clips from various other Hartnell stories.

This collection is a real treasure! To be honest, it may not be the best purchase for someone who is just getting into Doctor Who, as these aren't complete stories, but then again, they do offer an appealling assortment of goodies from three very different early stories. As sad as it is that there are episodes missing from the early days of Doctor Who, it is gratifying that these gems to exist to give you a taste of the wonders they were creating for this unique series.

One final note - if you think you might be at all interested in this, consider buying the Troughton set too, which contains a further 12 episodes from that era!

The most flabbergasting remake of Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon ever mounted, Mario Bava's frothy Italian sex farce is a swinging sixties piece of peek-a-boo exploitation set to a jazzy score. Leggy brunette Daniela Giordano struts in miniskirts (and less) as a nice church-going girl picked up by a leering hunk in a red convertible (Brett Halsey). "You try and stay pure and I'll try to stop you. It'll be fun," he exclaims as he chases her around his funky bachelor pad. At least that's her version of the story. When Halsey brags to his drinking chums he's the shy guy taught a few things by his insatiable date, and the peeping tom landlord follows with a complicated tale of a gay nightclub, naked dancing girls in go-go boots, and wild lesbian sex. The "real" story, told by a narrating psychologist, is a let down after all these outrageous sex fantasies. Elegantly shot and sleekly designed in bright, bold colors, it makes for a handsome helping of cheesecake and tame centerfold-style nudity, and Bava employs all the abrupt zooms and fuzzy focus transitions we expect from our hip sixties pictures. It's quite a contrast from his usual baroque thrillers, handsome and even a little kinky, but hardly memorable. --Sean Axmaker

    Description

What happened last night in Tina's apartment? Did she sleep with Gianni willingly, or was she raped? And what was that other couple doing in the apartment with them? Tina, Gianni, Tina's mother, and Tina's peeping tom concierge all have differing opinions in this "shagadelic" sex farce from horror maestro Mario Bava! A spicy Italian variation on the multi-perspective storyline of Akira Kurosawa's "Rashomon," "Four Times That Night" is presented for the first time in the United States on home video, in its correct theatrical aspect ratio and in its original Italian version.

4 out of 5 stars Bava has some fun.......2004-06-05

Italian director Mario Bava (1914-1980) is a giant in the horror film genre. Bava's big break into the field came with his 1960 black and white classic "Black Sunday" starring Barbara Steele. This was only the beginning, as Bava churned out a mix of gruesome shockers and non-horror films over the next seventeen years; his films always promised great style mixed with scenes of murder and mayhem. Perhaps Mario's biggest contribution to the horror genre was his 1972 picture "Twitch of the Death Nerve," also known as "Bay of Blood." It doesn't take too long to realize "Friday the 13th" shamelessly cribbed from this slasher bloodbath. At least two of the murders in the film appear almost unchanged in the first installment of the Jason Voorhees franchise. That's right-Mario Bava gave birth to the modern slasher film. But he also dabbled in non-horror films with the immensely entertaining peplum classic, "Hercules in the Haunted World" and this film, the slightly racy romantic comedy "Four Times That Night." After watching his contributions to the sword and sandal, horror, and romantic comedy genres, I have to express further admiration for this amazing filmmaker; he could make an entertaining motion picture no matter what the subject.

"Four Times That Night" is an interesting film about how different people perceive the same event in different ways. It all starts when Tina (Daniela Giordano) meets a suave ladies man named Gianni (Brett Halsey) while walking her dog. Uncomfortable with the attention she's receiving from this guy in a fancy sports car, Tina runs off through the park only to discover Gianni is following her. After some small talk, she agrees to go out on a date with him. Gianni comes to her house to pick her up and the two head out for a night on the town. Then the fun begins, as we see the end result of the date. Tina returns home very late with her dress torn while Gianni has some suspicious looking scratches on his face. A case of someone not keeping his hands to himself, perhaps? Maybe, but maybe not. Bava has great fun as he shows the viewer what happened from four different perspectives. Even at the end of the film, we're not entirely sure whether to believe the "real" account of what happened. Can we only rely on the perceptions of those individuals involved in the events?

Tina's account of the evening predictably defines events from a woman's perspective. She explains to her mother that Gianni was an animal who took her dancing, filled her with drink, and then took her back to his bachelor pad with decidedly unwholesome expectations. Her dress was torn as she tried to escape from his apartment, and the scratches on his face came about from the same event. Is this the right explanation for the story? Well, Tina did come home late. Perhaps she's only making up an elaborate excuse to explain away her tardiness to a concerned mother. Gianni sees things quite differently. In his version of events, Tina is a woman of voracious appetites. He could barely keep her out on the dance floor for a minute before she started pestering him to take her to his place. Once there, she used her wily charms to seduce our hero. Gianni's version emphasizes his masculine ability to attract women. The security guard working at Gianni's apartment building tells a different story, a story filled with salacious info about Gianni, Tina, and another couple who arrived at the apartment. He was able to see the events, he explains, because he was doing his job and only happened to see through the apartment window. The final explanation is a funny one, from a psychologist at the end of the film who tries to prove how perceptions are often faulty. This account shows, in mundane detail, how events really unfolded.

"Four Times That Night." Four different accounts of the same date between a man and a woman. Thankfully, Bava pulls it all off with great humor and a generous portion of ridiculousness. Even more thankfully, he used Daniela Giordano in the role of Tina. This Italian actress is gorgeous, one of the best looking starlets I have ever seen in an Italian film. Keep your eyes on her and "Four Times That Night" will be an entertaining experience indeed. There's not much more to say about the movie except to mention the hilarious d?cor in Gianni's apartment as well as the hyper psychedelic club where the two go to drink and dance. Did you think the 1970's had its wacky outfits and furniture? Check this place out. Wow. My eyes hurt after watching this movie. It's all done in great fun, though. Bava adeptly handles the changing storylines and even inserts a little dose of farce and slapstick into the mix.

The DVD version of the film doesn't have many extras beyond a Bava biography-standard for any film in the Bava Collection-along with a filmography, some stills, and a widescreen picture transfer. The quality of the feature varies significantly; I saw significant streaks and grain present in the first twenty minutes or so before the picture improved. But what can you expect? "Four Times That Night" is a non-horror Bava film, and thus is not as interesting to his modern day fans as "Black Sunday" or "Twitch of the Death Nerve." I, however, enjoyed this movie. Perhaps you will too if you look beyond this director's proclivity for shrieks and look at his work as a whole.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful visuals - mediocre movie - sloppy release.......2001-08-30

"Four times that night" is supposed to be Bava's, according to
the liner notes obligatory, "blue movie".
Probably in order not to make the movie too flat, the
creators adapted the conception of "Rashomon".
Unfortunately, I haven't seen the latter movie so far,
so that I cannot tell how much Bava copied from it.
Anyway, Bava presents the material, a one night stand
presented from four different viewpoints, as a light
hearted comedy. Though not particularly convincing, I
found the movie entertaining and enjoyed how Bava was
playing with his audience, especially, when the psychiatrist tells his mock version of what "really"
happened. The colourful visual style and the mastery
of the camera added further delight.
As far as the DVD is concerned, it is another sloppy
release by Image - they didn't even take the pain to cut
out those frames announcing the beginning and the end of the break when - being in a movie theatre - you are
supposed to buy your ice cream. Though the transfer is
sharp and colourful, it has been drawn from an extremely
speckled master. The audios are equally damaged.
There is NO bonus material - not even a trailer - worth
mentioning, except for the informative liner notes by
    Tim Lucas.
People interested in Bava's work and intrigued by his
visual style will probably want to buy this DVD which at
least features the original version. To others, I hesitate
    to recommend the DVD.

2 out of 5 stars Just because Bava's name is on it doesn't make it a classic........2001-08-09

It seems that every review I read for a Bava film has to praise his work no matter how average the picture. Even if a critic isn't crazy about the film at hand they find some way to call it great. Why? Is it blind allegiance? Bava made some influential and great films but not everything he touched turned to gold. Four Times... is very dull. Yes it looks good. And yes Bava did a lot with a small budget and short shooting schedule but that doesn't make it a "great" film. It's average at best. I almost couldn't wait for the film to end. The only thing that makes this movie stand out from other professional looking erotic films from this period is Bava's name. According to Tim Lucas' liner notes Bava filmed Four Times...out of fear of being labeled a homosexual director. Pretty silly if you ask me (esp. since the movie did not help his career). His fear explains why the films eroticism feels so forced. If you're a Bava completest you'll want this DVD. Otherwise I can't imagine too many people will find much of interest here. Image's DVD presentation is very nice. The colors are fairly strong. The film looks and sounds as good as can be expected.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Change Of Pace For Bava.......2001-04-16

For those who enjoy Mario Bava's horror films, this movie will come as a surprise. It shows a side of Bava not normally associated with him. This is a wonderful, thought-provoking film that works as a light hearted comedy and as a character study of human sexuality (which was daring for 1968).

John and Tina meet while Tina is walking her dog. They go out on a date which turns into a disaster when Tina reurns home with a ripped up dress and John with scratched on the forehead. What follows are three different perspectives from John, Tina, and John's doorman who spied on them, on what actually happened, followed by a fourth perspective by a psychiatrist on what could have happened (it's up to the viewer to make up their minds).

This subtitled DVD comes with Mario Bava's biography and filmography, good liner notes from Tim Lucas, and a photo and poster gallery.

    Recommended.

    4 out of 5 stars INSATIABLE.......2001-03-19

Almost invisible for 32 years, italian director Mario Bava's FOUR TIMES THAT NIGHT is now presented by Image in the DVD standard. Shot in late 1968, at the beginning of the erotic wave that submerged the B cinema of Italia, Germany and France, this movie didn't make it in front of the italian censorship and was banned from italian and international screens until 1973. It can not be denied that FOUR TIMES THAT NIGHT delivers a certain amount of eroticism due mostly to the sculptural Daniela Giordano, Miss Italy 1966.

Other problematic scenes - for the censors, I mean - include homosexual and lesbian behaviours, mostly verbal and a night in a club for special people. I suppose that the producers of FOUR TIMES THAT NIGHT, if they only had produced it two years later, would have a tremendous success because the cinematography is, as always in Mario Bava's movies, original and innovative. The first story, partly narrated " off " by Daniela Giordano is a little masterpiece that doesn't leave unharmed womanizers nor innocent sex symbols.

The theme of FOUR TIMES THAT NIGHT is well known, the same story is told not from two three different points of view but rather from three different perspectives. A psychiatrist has the difficult task to propose the fourth version which could be or...not the real one.

The copy presented by Image is deceiving if we have in mind the Mario Bava movies that Anchor Bay or VCI released a few months ago. White spots haven't been digitally treated and the colours are very sad. As bonus features, biography and filmography of Mario Bava and english subtitles. Less than the minimum.

    A DVD zone discovery.
