Description

One of the most controversial Italians films of the 80s, DEVIL IN THE FLESH takes Raymond Radiguet's classic novel and updates it to modern times. Dealing with the legacy of Italy's "leaden years" and the aftermath of the social struggles headed by the extreme left wing revolutionary groups, DEVIL IN THE FLESH caused a critical uproar upon it's release due to its highly-charged political and sexually frank subject matter. Marushka Detmers (THE MAMBO KINGS) stars as Giulia, a young woman engaged to marry Giacomo, her fiancée who's sitting behind bars because of his political activity. Restless in her appetites and inner turmoil, she meets a young student named Andrea and a passionate affair quickly ensues. But when the day arrives in which she has to face whether she wants to share her life with Giacomo or not, Giulia takes a surprising decision…

Boldly directed by Marco Bellocchio (GOOD MORNING, NIGHT) and featuring superb cinematography by Giuseppe Lanci, DEVIL IN THE FLESH is a powerfully erotic film that deserves to be discovered and appreciated without preconceptions. With it's mixing of political and sexual issues, Bellocchio retains the strength and relevancy of the classic text and makes a strong contemporary statement in favour of absolute artistic and political freedom. As controversial as films get, DEVIL IN THE FLESH remains one of the most important Italian films of our time.

NoShame Films is proud to present DEVIL IN THE FLESH for the first time on DVD in its original widescreen aspect ratio, digitally re-mastered from the original negative, uncut and uncensored.

4 out of 5 stars "Media" and Antigone.......2007-03-10

Bellocchio refers to this as a mainly political movie, a description of the revolutionary movement in Italy, but that seems more metaphor than reality. Well, almost everything in the movie seems like metaphor. The revolutionaries, of whom we see and about whom we learn very little, might as well be mafiosi. Out with the old and in with the new.

Andrea's Papa, a psychoanalyst, seems to stand for the usual traditional bourgeois values -- morally upright, unperturbed, clean and tidy, thoroughly ritualized.

Giullia, the girlfriend of a revolutionary, seems to represent what can happen to someone who needs very badly a cause to support but is unable to muster up the kind of devotion such a commitment demands. (I'm guessing here.) Andrea, the adolescent boy, seems to be the only guy in the movie who is not in some unquiet way "upatz." He's respectful of his father but disobedient too. He loves Giullia, or so we assume, although he's not really old enough to have learned how to manage his reflexes optimally, but he leaves her in order to show up at school and complete his final exams. His course between these contradictory lifestyles could be described as "media." He's the man in between, who knows the meaning of gradualism, who can keep his cool while those about him are screaming.

Most of this is summed up during the oral part of his finals when he is asked to translate and comment on an excerpt from "Antigone," which contrasts the traditional authority of the gods with the notion of secularity and free will.

That brings us -- by no particular course that I'm aware of -- to Marushka Detmars. She brings to mind a New Yorker cartoon of a few years ago. Two hippos are neck-deep in the river, staring at a gazelle drinking from the bank, and one hippo says to the other, "I hate her." She's a good actress. (Let me get that out of the way.) But so is everyone else in the film. She carries with her, in her speech and manner, the rich glitter of outright lunacy. And it all comes from the actress too, not from directorial aid. Detmars isn't nuts the way Catherine DeNeuve was nuts in "Repulsion." The walls don't turn to rubber and grow hands. Instead, we see her animated -- sometimes TOO animated. And she gives us shocking jolts when her mood abruptly changes and becomes threatening the way a looming thunderstorm crackles with lightning.

A critic described her as sultry, but that's probably not the word he was searching for. She's compellingly beautiful with her fluffy brown hair, her wide white ready grin, her impulsive giggles. And her eyes are like the eyes in the paintings on the walls of ancient Egyptian tombs. The sexy parts are pretty erotic, not so much because one of them is explicit, but because we've gotten to know the characters involved. (It's more interesting to spy on the honeymoon couple next door than go to a skin flick.) Actually there isn't THAT much sex. There is only one scene of simulated intercourse but the director lets it play out in what seems to be real time. At least real time for an eighteen-year-old boy.

The young man who plays Andrea is fine too, which is a necessary thing, because the film depends almost entirely on him and Giullia. They have to carry it and they do. If it were not for their performances, I'm not sure this would be as interesting or as admirable flick as it is. It could easily have been turned into a rather slow, boring romance.

Worth having.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst films ever!!.......2006-07-10

I bought this DVD hoping that it will be a good one but it turned out to be awful and trashy. There is no story or plot to it, so I ended up throwing it away. I really regret buying it.
If you're into sex, then this film is for you but let me tell you this, it is boring like hell.

2 out of 5 stars depends on what you want.......2006-07-06

Each scene is one shot, and that shot goes on and on and on, sometimes staying with the same act or lack of action. This film is pretension personified, but that's okay. Many people can't tell the difference between pretension and art. The music too is full of squeaks and squawks. In case you didn't know, that means that the music too is high art.

There is no story. Boy and girl see each other, and without preliminaries hit the sack. We see boy & girl here, there, in the sack, here, there, in the sack, etc. Occasionally we get a shot of some of the other characters.

Because of the lack of dynamics, the film is not effective, either as drama or as eroticism. Ironically, "The Summer of '42" was much more erotic even without any nudity (which would have helped).

The vaulted sex scenes are three in number, chest and shoulders, and they last about three minutes each. The much-touted fellatio scene is actually surprisingly good, more convincing than the "love" scenes.

There are also a few brief full-frontal scenes of the star, who has a gorgeous body (hence, the two star rating).

Bottom line: the only reason to see this movie is the nudity and the sex. But there are many better movies for that. So, only if you need the pretentiousness in order to permit yourself to see a sex movie should you see this.

4 out of 5 stars a controversial release.......2006-07-06

i liked this movie. it is a story of a girl who is very mischievious and full of fun. she is bored and gets into trouble. it has a scene of explicit sex and is not for children. i would reccomend it.

4 out of 5 stars O.K... Am I the only one who got it?.......2006-06-16

This is a film about the power of erotic love. He's young and naive and doesn't care how hopeless and destructive his affair with this older woman might be. She's older and fully aware of the danger, but not totally at the helm of her own ship; given to bouts of melancholy and psychosis.

Check out the film's last scene: He's there being examined by his professors, and she's there watching him in a growing state of emotion. Watch the expressions on her face (God, what a performance!) and you'll see that she realizes just how much she'll lose by falling in love with this young man but, simulataneously, just how powerless she is to resist the passion, love, lust, self-destruction. I love this film.

A cold blooded killer who killed her grandmother and her dog. She stabbed a teacher she has a crush on, she also killed her parents. It should be on Closed Captions.

4 out of 5 stars Forget Rose McGowan; Look at Sherrie Rose.......2007-04-23

Everyone keeps going on about how wonderful Rose McGowan is in this film. I thought maybe I would have a chance with the shower scene but no luck. Is there an unrated version of this film? Anyway the one to look at in this film is Sherrie Rose. She is stunning. Come on, why are you watching this movie? The bedroom scenes were great and well worth having to put up with a disappointing McGowan, as pretty as she may be.

5 out of 5 stars One of Rose's Best Films .......2007-03-18

This is a cool film. It's a dark story, not really horror, but it has the feel of a horror flick. Rose just plays this role really well. It's teen angst gone too far with a demented twist. And the film's main character gives it to the type of poeple most of us all dispise= hypocritical religous freaks, dumb blonds and jocks (But I hated the part when the main character kills her religous freak grandmother's dog). It's a film that is great to watch, with decent dialogue and acting. And the best thing about it? It stars ROSE MCGOWAN. 'nuff said!

4 out of 5 stars I love Rose Mcgowan!.......2004-06-24

This movie could best be described as being in the middle of a really bad movie and a really good movie. I think the difference is all in the film quality and lack of character development. There are no hollywood recipes for success here which makes it all the better.

This is not the type of movie that most people would pay attention to, but if you apreciate bmovies and the like, you will apreciate this one. It's like a well made bmovie, yea, thats it.

4 out of 5 stars YET ANOTHER ''FATAL ATTRACTION'' WANNABE. BUT, THIS WAS GOOD.......2004-05-07

A DEMENTED TEENAGER [ROSE MCGOWAN] FALLS IN LOVE WITH A TEAHCER. ONLY PROBLEMS; THE TEACHER IS MARRIED, SHE'S A STUDENT OF HIS, AND SHE WILL GO ALL OUT TO HAVE HIM. BASICALLY, THIS IS JUST ''FATAL ATTRACTION'' FOR TEENAGERS. BUT, UNLIKE MOST OF THE OTHER IMITAIONS OF THAT MOVIE, THIS WAS ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD. IT'S FUN TO WATCH, IT'S SUSPENSEFUL, AND IT HAS SOME PRETTY GOOD ACTING. A TREAT FOR PEOPLE THAT LIKE TO WATCH A GOOD THRILLER. FOLLOWED BY A SEQUEL.

1 out of 5 stars O'keefe Wasted on Idiotic Film.......2005-01-22

Caught this film on HBO the other night, I'd never heard of JL O'Keefe. DAMN is she hot...I was blown away by her beauty. She's an ok actress that didn't really portray menace and anger all that well. But hey, I'm a guy...I'm thinking about dropping $10 on this just to check O'Keefe out again.

To summarize:

movie: WEAK (see other reviews for detail)
O'Keefe: Incredibly Hot Babe (she should star in some better roles)

2 out of 5 stars WOULD'VE BEEN BETTER IF ROSE MCGOWAN CAME BACK.......2004-07-15

THIS TIME, DEBBIE STRONG [THIS TIME, BEING PLAYED BY JODI LYNN O KEEFE] BECOMES OBSESSED WITH A COLLEGE TEACHER. MOVIE'S QUITE OK TO WATCH SOMETIMES, BUT, I CAN'T DENY THE FACT THAT I DON'T LIKE THIS NEW GIRL. I REALLY THINK ROSE MCGOWAN DONE BETTER AND IF YOU WATCH THIS MOVIE IN ITS ENTIRETY, YOU'LL SEE WHY. BUT, AT LEAST IT WAS REMOTELY ENTERTAINING. I THINK IT'S AT LEAST WORTH 1 RENTAL. NOTHING MORE.

4 out of 5 stars worth giving a try.......2004-04-20

I didn't even know there was a sequel to Devil In The Flesh (which I own on DVD) until I was at the video store recently in the thriller section and spotted it. I looked at it and rented it just because if I have seen and liked an original if there is a sequel I have to see it. But there has been several sequel disasters (ex: the prequel to the hilarious movie dumb and dumber called dumb and dumberer, the most stupid movie I have ever seen and an insult and embarrassment to the first I love all kinds of movies) and plus I tend to be skeptical when a movie is from a company I haven't heard of and the sequel is a different main character than the first cause it makes it less believeable.

But I was familar with Jodi Lyn O'Keefe and thought it didn't look that bad so I rented it anyways. I was pleasantly suprised I thought I may think it was okay but I didn't expect to like it a lot more than the original.

Although I like Rose Mcgowen who played the same part in the first movie and thought she did with it, I actually liked Jodi Lyn O'Keefe's portrayal of it better. I find her more attractive than Rose and more believeable bitc*y than her as well. She also has a much better taste in clothes than Rose does but all of this doesn't make for a good actress. Which I was delighted to find she actually is a good actress although she doesn't really get the chance to prove it since Jodi always gets stuck with the beautiful but bitc*y roles (ex: She's All That, Whatever It Takes) but in this one she's not really bitc*y just decieving.

Jodi plays Debbie Strong who escapes from the mental instution she was sent when she murdered her mother grandmother and attempted to murder her obbsessive crush on her english teacher in the original. She also murdered several others in the original including her best friend and a boy from school who had the hots for her. She escapes and steals the car, money and idenity of a girl she met by in a way hitchhiking. The girl was really rich and realuclantly off to college but was very dopey. Deb doesn't even have to murder her before she can she accedently murders herself.

Her original plan was to take her intuition money and go to mexico and be crazy but while getting the money she runs into An english Professor at the college Mr. Deckard (who is so much cuter than the guy she was obbsessed with in the first movie and he takes it much farther than the other guy did) and immeditely becomes smitten so she decides to go to the college instead of mexico.

She meets and effects several people besides Mr. Deckard including her geeky inexperienced roomate Laney, a total jock jerk who even though Deb constantly embarrasses him in front of his friends and mouths off to him he won't take no for an answer (just like the jerky jock that wouldn't take no for an answer in the first one. Also note that they look alike except in my opinion this one is uglier and more stupid than the other guy) and lots of other people.

As the movie progresses Debbie gets more obbsessed more insane and more dangerous. When Debbies roomy and new best friend leaks on to her disturbing past she's a goner. When the RA of the floor takes her mouthing off to far guess what she's a goner. When a drunk won't leave her alone guess what he's a goner. The number of bodies count up through the movie. When she really gets insane is when she fills Sam up with too much wine and the two end up getting hot and heavy in his office. When he suddenly feels guilty about his actions he of course breaks it off and that is when her character becomes dangerously obbsessed. Again like the original, the teacher has a blonde girlfriend who has had problems with the relationship. When his girlfriend becomes pregnat and she spys on the two also getting hot and heavy in his office that is when she goes after the girlfriend just like the character did in the original.

All in all this movie has funny moments, creepy moments, dramatic moments, etc. etc. I didn't find it scary and I don't see why it was in the thriller section it could be labeled more of a drama than a thriller at least to me (but also note it takes a great deal to scare me) but it is an amusing movie and worth taking a look at. Jodi Lyn O'Keefe steals the movie and I wish she was given more main parts in movies.

5 out of 5 stars You people need to lighten up!.......2003-12-09

Anyone who suggests that better acting could have made this a better movie is taking the film far too seriously. Come on, this movie is a joke. It can barely be classified as a horror film. Not that thats a bad thing, this is a great movie, but its only a great movie if its taken lightly.

I mean really, there are only two cops in the entire town, and they happen to be father and son? I'm supposed to take this seriously, and consider it, and rate it, as a serious film? Give me a break.

Although, this movie had made a major contribution to film. The board with the nail death scene (anyone who has seen the film knows what I'm talking about) was "borrowed" for the movie, Kill Bill vol. 1. So I guess that gives the movie some credablity.

Whatever. Enjoy the movie, but don't take it to seriously. If you try to critique movies, and point out their faults, thats when moviegoing becomes a drag.

1 out of 5 stars Horrifyingly bad........2003-08-13

This film is in need of an actress like Maruschka Detmers (who starred in the 1986 Italian version). While the Italian version was far from a great film, Detmers gave the uninhibited, feral sexual-predator performance needed to drive the concept. In Devil in the Flesh 2, what we get is the American homogenized version: A bad campus soap opera desperately trying to be an erotic thriller. And when you marry the worst elements of Felicity with Poison Ivy, expect the worst.

And you get the worst. She may be good-looking, but Jodi Lyn O'Keefe is unable to project real threat and sensuality: Her over-the-top makeup job doesn't help and in fact makes her look like a mockery, a parody of a dangerous woman. And you can literally see her actors' contract pass through your eyes when you hit the sex scenes ("No nudity...no nudity..."), where director Marcus Spiegel whips out all the worst cliches: Airy music, dissolves, body doubles with their heads cut off, and...oh! Those painful stop-motion slow-mo shots! If a soft-core stripper video is what they wanted, they certainly succeeded. This character is supposed to be the sexy, uninhibited, dangerous woman who shakes up everybody's world, and the obvious fakeness of the sex scenes just destroys her credibility. At least try to hide the body double, folks!

The directing and editing are just miserable, with the death-by-phone-wire scene being especially laughable. Shoot it three times from similar angles and use all of them -- great way to make the audience notice the stunt woman! I know this film was made for cable, but did they have to flaunt the low production values and bad taste at every turn?

A flick deserving of the utmost contempt and ridicule.

    Product Description

With MICHELINE PRESLE, GERARD PHILIPE. Directed by CLAUDE AUTANT LARA. Back in the 1950s, Gerard Philipe was one of the hottest actors in French cinema. Sadly, he was soon dead of a heart attack at the age of 36. Nonetheless, his talent shines through brightly in this, the film which made him an international star. The time is the last days of World War I and Philipe plays Francois, a high school student whose interests are way beyond girls his own age. Francois becomes instantly smitten with Martha, an older woman who arrives in town to assist her mother as a nurse at the hospital which is next door to Francois school. Soldiers who have been wounded in battle are brought to this hospital directly from the front. As Francois and his classmates observe them, they are well aware that if the war continues, they too will soon be finding themselves among the wounded and the dead. At the same time, Francois zealously pursues the sensitive and tenderhearted Martha, even though she is engaged to marry a soldier. The boy does not let up even after Martha marries her fianc and he returns to battle. The story follows the evolving relationship between Francois and Martha and the result is an impassioned and deeply felt love story, a classic tale of tangled emotions and heartbreak. Because they place their feelings above all else, are Francois and Martha weak and selfish? Or should they be commended for attempting to cling to love in time of war and chaos? You decide. The story was re-made in 1987 as an X-rated, non-pornographic film, but was not nearly as moving as this version. Look for JACQUES TATI in a bit part as a soldier! One of the many highlights is a sensuous love scene by a fireplace, which director Claude Autant Lara partially repeats near the films finale - but for an entirely different effect! Dubbed in English. 121 minutes.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Debbie is.......2007-06-30
