Cupid & Cate is fast-food drama, but you can't turn away from a movie with a dazzling cast including Mary-Louise Parker, Peter Gallagher, Philip Bosco, Bebe Neuwirth, Brenda Fricker, and Joanna Going. This Hallmark Hall of Fame TV movie features Parker as Cate, proprietor of an upscale, second-hand clothing store. In handy dramatic terms, the shop is a gleaming repository of old memories--memory itself being something like emotional quicksand for black sheep Cate, who blames her domineering father (Philip Bosco) for her sisters' over-achieving ways as well as for the suffering of her late, alcoholic mother. Newly freed from an engagement to a chilly Brahmin type, Cate begins her life anew with the arrival of a near-perfect fellow (Gallagher) who adores her but is in an uphill fight for survival. The patchy script is riddled with unmodulated emotional pitches and incredible resolutions, but, hey, those actors are charm personified. --Tom Keogh

For once, the Amazon reviewer is right: this script is a mess. Boy meets girl, should be easy, right? Every screenwriter should know by now the basic requirements. Well, this one didn't. Must be somebody's friend. The script does not give us any reason to like either the boy or the girl, much less love them, which is what we have to do if a love story is going to work.
To make sure this movie is off-putting, they did a number of Mary-Louise Parker. They turned one of the most beautiful faces in the movies into something almost ugly. And Gallagher, as always, is more effective playing a bad guy or a foil.
Maybe you have to belong to a certain ethnic group in order to appreciate this movie otherwise this movie is dull. I frankly don't know. But be careful with this one.
Don't Miss This One!!!.......2006-03-31
I happened to catch this on the Hallmark Channel and thought by the title is was going to be one of those 'cutsy' movies that Hallmark seems to produce. Well...I was pleasantly surprised! This film was a delight. Mary Louise Parker and Peter Gallagher are just adorable together. The story line is very real, and you could just imagine all the situations happening in your own family. It does not have just romantic overtones, but it is also a family drama. I loved it so much that I immediately got the video as soon as it came out. I now own the DVD as well and I can't count the times I have watched it. I just love romance I guess! If you have the chance to see this sweet film, try it, I think you might like it-
A favorite .......2006-02-27
I enjoy Mary-Louise Parker in any setting, from Fried Green Tomatoes to Boys on the Side. This movie was captivating to me because of her unique mannerisms as always, and also because I enjoyed the vintage clothing she wore and sold.
The story line was bittersweet in parts, but the ending was how I had hoped it would be.
The entire cast was excellent in this movie and very well suited to their images.
I highly recommend it unless family turmoil isn't your thing. Mary-Louise Parker at her best.
Better Than You Think..........2003-06-29
I was not expecting much from Cupid & Cate.
After all, after reading that the 2000 film would be broadcast on St. Valentine's week via the Hallmark Channel, I was subjected to the tortures of endless promos for the "Love and Romance" week.
In short, I was expecting the quintessential, dreaded and demonic cash seeking "Date Movie".
You know the drill, a cute little romantic alleged comedy, starring the likes of Sandra Bullock or Hugh Grant or even worse, Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant TOGETHER.
Even commercials or online descriptions of the film, portrayed the film as something like: "The only thing standing in the way of true love for Cate....is her fiancée".
Hand me the remote.... Survivor in the Amazon is on!
To be honest, the film starts off just that way. It was easily predicted that the well meaning, but dull as watching paint drying fiancée would hit the road before the start of the second act. However, it quickly became apparent that the romantic aspects of the film, although genuinely portrayed by an excellent cast, were secondary. The film is primarily about the strained relationship between a father and daughter and how their experiences parallel one another.
It made for fascinating viewing, with outstanding performances from Philip Bosco and Mary-Louise Parker. After struggling to sit through the nearly banal Mr. Wonderful, where Ms. Parker was given 1 descent scene, here she really shines. One can easily see the development in her art over her performances from the early 90's. As good as her performance was in A Place For Annie, she's even better here. A very tender and above all, real performance. Peter Gallagher and Brenda Fricker are also standouts.
Added attractions to the film are beautiful autumn scenes and Ms. Parker's rather eccentric wardrobe (check out her hat during the christening scene, just stunning).
Cupid & Cate is highly recommended viewing and would actually make a better Father's Day DVD purchase than for Cupid's holiday.
I even forgot The West Wing was on.
Three and a half stars out of four.
Cute, but something's missing.......2000-08-21
Ok, so it sounded like a great plot for a movie--you know, lonely girl meets a great guy who "takes her away" from her life--that is, until he gets sick and, well, you know. Mary Louise-Parker is as charming as ever and can always deliver a line for a laugh. Peter Gallagher is also true to form--he is cute and romantic. Still, something is missing... For you guys out there I would definately call it a chich flick, one for the girls to watch with a bag of popcorn and a few tissues. All in all, not bad but then again certainly not oscar worthy.

250,000 people can't be wrong!.......2007-01-19
OK, maybe they can! Although, I have to say, I loved this one, and still stick it in the video player, crank up the music and enjoy it immensely. There are 250,000+ plus people on that beach... amazing!, and awesome to watch. The crowd is going off to his music and the party vibe and the camera work that captures it is excellent... even though I think some of the camera men have dedicated themselves to picking out the hotties!
Personally, I wouldn't want to watch 2 hours of Fatboy mixing because it's not all that interesting. And yes, some of the criticisms are deserved, if you look at it from the angle of pure DJ mixing skills it ain't that great and ego... we'll, yes, there's bucket loads of it, the old Fatboy might just be his own biggest fan... but what a show though! Everyone's enjoying themselves and the music (even though it's probably not a typical fatboy mix) and what more can you ask for from a good night out than that and in the end, it is all about the music.
The disc also has some great bonus features worth checking out including a production interview, commentary by the man himself, audio track selection and a few games and a documentary (code = 303). Slip this one on, crank up the music and enjoy.
Highly recommended.
The Best DJ movie ever made!.......2007-01-01
Why is this the best DJ movie ever made? Because, it captures exactly what its like to be a part of the Dance Music scene. No, not everyone will like it. Either you "get" dance music or you don't. Electronic music is not slow, static or stationary, its created to get people moving, energized... dancing! So, if you plan on sitting on the couch eating twinkies and cereal you may find yourself slightly annoyed. "Why is everyone ejoying themselves and I'm not?", you may ask. Well, turn the volume up, have a red bull and enjoy the music. Fatboy Slim begs for you to be a part of the party. No other movie in this genre has yet to achieve what Live on Brighton Beach accomplishes.
Yes...One Plane Ticket To The U.K. Please............2006-01-12
well....i just recieved this disk and i had very high hopes...let me say, most were met....but there are a couple things i got tired of real fast...first of all, if i wanted to see that many crowd shots, i would have bought "Dancing Party People: The Movie"....i would have loved to see a disk that was mostly the man himself with the giant screen in the background...that would have been cool...show me what it was like being in the crowd, not the crowd itself.....there is a couple quick shots on Chapter 14, about a min into the chapter that show perfectly what i mean....my other complaint is with the man himself.....he really comes across as having a butt-load full of ego....many, many, MANY instances of him striking the "jesus christ pose"...in all of my years of going to parties, i have yet to see a dj do this as much as he does during this set....other than those complaints, i have nothing but praise for it.....i have not checked out the special features yet, just the movie itself and i truly do dig it...the music is top notch, the quality of the picture and the sound is supurb....although this may not mean much, seeing as how this is my first review, i fully recommend this disk to fans of electronica everywhere.....
wish i was there...!.......2005-02-02

Kick Ass!.......2003-12-07
I think that this DVD was pretty sweet. When I saw it for the first time I thought yea this is pretty goo, but the more I watched it the more I enjoyed it. I definately do not agree with the skeptics that reviewed this DVD before me. I liked it I would check it out.

5 starts for fashion.......2006-10-01
Story is entertaining and Joan Bennet is quite good in her role. BUT I give this 5 stars for that fun and fantastic fashions...lots and lots.
Fashion buffs top choice!.......2006-03-06
"Vogues of 1938"--If you are looking for a movie with a really thick plot, this is not for you. However, if you are really into fashion design (as a doer or as an observer), you are in the right place. "Vogues" is jam-packed with fashions! This movie could be (and probably is) used as a supplemental "textbook" for fashion design classes. There are many beautiful dresses shown in the story. The climax of the movie is a wonderful fashion show. Get your sketchbook ready when you watch this one!
Product placement circa 1938.......2006-02-05
A charming little frou-frou of a movie, VOGUES OF 1938 is an early Technicolor feature starring Warner Baxter as a fashion designer fending off a herd of creditors and Joan Bennett as a spoiled rich girl who, horrors, isn't quite as rich as she used to be. Still, she's headstrong enough to jilt her intended at the altar and yet not too proud to work as a model for the greatest fashion designer around. Throw a bored and self-centered Helen Vinson in as Baxter's wife and you've got all you need for a dependable love-triangle.
Not that plot matters all that much in this one. Oh, it skimmers to the surface now and then, but not so that it intrudes on the main focus of this movie - fashion (wardrobe by Omar Kiam, Miss Bennett's wardrobe by Irene, hats and accessories by John-Frederics and Sally Victor.) In fact, you're forgiven if you mistake VOGUES for a proto-infomercial for the chic set. Everything - plot, music numbers, characters - is shoved out of the way by the endless parade of beautiful women draped in yet another beautiful gown and hat. Since they dressed better then than we do now, I'm not complaining.
In other words nothing really shimmers and sparkles here save for the clothes. The plot is standard issue, the capable and talented Baxter and Bennett are adequate with a lame and dull script. The musical numbers, nightclub stuff for the most part, are interesting. The color palette is pastel, which may be because the film has faded some through the years. It certainly suits Joan Bennett, though, who's nothing less than luminously beautiful. VOGUES OF 1938 is an alright time killer, amiable and unexceptional.
Defies Description.......2005-01-23
Agree regarding the transfer -- not great. But the movie certainly is. Beyond explanation, this silly, contrived and utterly outdated tale defies description. But it is a scream to watch, as the kaleidoscope of scenes unveil themselves in glorious early-Technicolor. The lovely and stylish Joan Bennett plays madcap heiress Wendy Van Katterling, on the eve of her marriage to a man she does not love, well-played by Alan Mowbray. This "madcap heiress" business, prolific in the Twenties and Thirties, gets pretty hard to take as the decades roll by - it was phony then, and it's *especially* phony now, harking back to a time when America was entranced by "The Upper Class." (Then there's that "madcap" business - how come we only hear about madcap heiresses. Why not madcap nurses or madcap streetwalkers?) This theatrical device, hackneyed already by the late Thirties, begs the viewer to wisely suspend any thought of reality, and that suspension *must* occur - just as it does in *The Wizard of Oz,* or the next hour-and-a-half or so will be torture. From the delivery of her wedding gown (in a motorcade down Fifth Avenue, no less, in a ridiculously tiny box) to the closing fashion show extravaganza, this movie can be excruciating or delightful, depending on your point of view. The heiress runs away, since that's what *all* madcap heiresses *do*, and gets a job at the House of Curzon, a Fifth Avenue couture salon. She endears herself to Curzon, himself, who has plenty on his mind already, with a Broadway show he's producing for his two-timing wife. The introduction of this branch of the plot allows for the insertion of a variety of musical interludes that are so unrelated, they appear to have been scrapped from *other* movies, but they are marvelous period pieces that dazzle the eye. Fashion piracy is another theme of the movie, and this piracy spells trouble for the House of Curzon. Then the wife departs, leaving Curzon with a mountain of debt and a faltering business. One thing becomes another and everything works out okay (this *was* made in 1937), culminating in a spectacular fashion show utilizing the gorgeous Miss Bennett, and *hundreds* of others, and all of the fantastic sets that were left over from the Broadway show Curzon was producing. While the movie drags at times, it is a time capsule revealing a particular slice of America that *wanted* to see movies like this - or is it that this was more of the kind of product that movie studios wanted Americans to see? In any case it is sheer fantasy, spewing out delicious costumes and surreal musical numbers lie it was a broken water main. The acting? Mischa Auer, as Curzon's rival-turned-friend, is brilliant.
Steer Clear of This Shoddy Transfer!.......2004-12-26
VOGUES is one of the very best 1930s musicals, but don't let the price tag of this 'Film Classics' issue fool you into thinking this is the DVD release you've been waiting for. The transfer is absolutely awful, like the kind you find in public domain titles in your local supermarket. It's obviously a glorified bootleg, from the region free coding to the shoddy keep-case artwork to the unprofessional liner notes to the homemade on-screen menu. Somehow, this bathtub-variety issue got past the Amazon screening process, which usually vetoes bootlegs. VOGUES OF 1938 is arguably the very best of the 1930s experiments in early three-strip Technicolor. Presenting it like this is lamentable enough, but the nerve of the price tag doubles the amount of poison swallowed. See VOGUES the way it was meant to be seen -- stick with the pristine print shown on Turner Classic Movies and let this 'digitally remastered' sham pass you by.

Comical and Sad.......2006-12-01
This film takes the viewer on a slow yet dramatic sequence of events that portrays the desperation and challenging obstacles that face the youth in Iran today.
Etti, the young girl who talks of living abroad, is approached by a man (Reza Golzar) that desires to help her. There is an obvious chemistry between these two, one that is platonic in nature.
Etti's behavior throughout this film appears innocent at first but one will notice that she has a different agenda in mind, one of desperate hope, a better future as a result of dissatisfaction with daily life in Iran... which seems to be an understatement among the youth in Iran for many years.
Reza feels obligated to assist Etti yet stumbles upon other obstacles between his own job and family life. Reza's character is laid back and introverted to some degree but remains a man that is skeptical of Etti towards the end of the film.
Many Iranian films that are produced in Iran leaves the viewer with a void at the end. Its up to the viewer to fill the gaps and understand the social dynamics between the character's and the consequences of their actions.
The end of this film "Boutique" is a mystery, regarding the fate of Etti. To the casual viewer, with no knowledge of Iranian cinema, this film provides a glimpse into the dark and often sad ending of Iranian cinema.
