Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on The Daily Show and in movies like Bruce Almighty and Anchorman--leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely & Amazing, Being John Malkovich). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. --Bret Fetzer

Some Things Are Worth the Wait..........2007-09-03
"The 40 Year Old Virgin" was a movie that I was on the fence about seeing for a long time. When I saw the trailer for it on TV and in theaters I thought it looked like it had possibilities of being funny, but then I wondered if all the good stuff had already been shown like so many other comedies do in their previews anymore. With that thought I managed to talk myself out of seeing the movie in theaters, opting to wait for DVD instead. The time came for the DVD release and I found myself with little interest in watching the movie, since it had been a while since I had seen the previews, and the desire to see it had waned. However, a co-worker was talking about seeing it again recently, and how funny it still was even after multiple viewings. When I mentioned that I had seen the movie, and what my concerns were regarding how funny it would still be beyond seeing the previews, to which the response was that the previews didn't even show the half of it. So, needless to say that was enough to get my interest back, and I decided to rent "The 40 Year Old Virgin" for the wife and I to hopefully enjoy thoroughly once the kids were asleep.
"The 40 Year Old Virgin" is the story of a man named Andy (Steve Carell), a stock room manager at a tech store who is content with living the life of a single man who loves to collect toys (never opening them from their box to ensure their value), play video games, and just have some good wholesome fun. During a poker night with some friends, the conversation is steered towards their individual sex lives, all of which seem to have some rather exaggerated details included, and when it comes to Andy's turn to share he flubs his way through a story that is so paper thin that it becomes very apparent that he is indeed still a virgin. With this discovery his friends take it upon themselves to solve, what they deem to be a problem, for Andy by trying to hook him up with a woman. However, their methods are not necessarily what's best for Andy, and their tips seem to range from bad to worse. With all this going on in his life, insanity seems like a sure bet, but then a woman named Trish (Catherine Keener) comes along who just might be the perfect woman to bring some stability to Andy's life, so long as his friends don't mess it up too much first.
This is a movie that I must say truly surprised me. Sure it contained the raunchy comedy that I expected from a movie with a title such as this, of course there is plenty of awkward situations (that are hilarious mind you) as his friends attempt to fix him up with a girl, and yes, the moral compass for the film is greatly skewed (for most of the characters anyway), but what I didn't expect was the endearing goodness and sincerity of Andy that serves as an anchor for all of the outlandish hilarity that ensues throughout the movie. Steve Carell's character, though he struggles with the temptations that his friends thrust upon him, he manages to hold on to his virtue of being a virgin (though this wasn't purposely done on his part, just a victim of circumstance), and in the end chooses to wait for the love of his life rather than have a meaningless fling. Having the main character be someone like this, who ends up having a strong moral compass, in this type of movie was a very welcome change of pace, and one that probably made this movie be better than it would have been allowing it to stand out from the rest of the crop.
The cast comprised of very talented comedic actors, such as; Seth Rogen ("Knocked Up"), Paul Rudd ("Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy") and of course, the star of the show Steve Carell ("Evan Almighty"), each of whom brought their characters to such hilarious and memorable life. The talented cast would have been nothing if not for the direction of experienced writer/producer, but relative newcomer to directing, Judd Apatow. Apatow, who also helped co-write the movie with Steve Carell, brought a freshness to the adult comedy genre opting to have more hilarious scenes, jokes, and even some drama, rather than relying on gratuitous nudity to carry the movie.
"The 40 Year Old Virgin" is very much an adult oriented comedy that is not at all safe for children, but it is without a doubt a hilarious movie filled with innuendo, sometimes raunchy comedy, and even some sweetness that is definitely worth watching, and is even one of the few of its kind that is even remotely original.
"The 40 Year Old Virgin" is available in rated R and unrated editions, both contain language, sexual references, and nudity.
Love this movie!!.......2007-09-03
I love this movie! It was one of the funniest movies I've seen. All the actors did a great job. Some of the people who have reviewed this movie on Amazon are way too uptight. If you didn't enjoy it, you had the option of not watching it! No one put a gun to your head and forced you to sit through it, sheesh! Anyway, as I said, I thought it was way funny!
Great Fun!!!.......2007-08-16
I loved this movie the first I saw it.I feel this HD DVD Version is worth the money. The features are incredible you will be completely entertained.I believe the story line is very unusual fact of life in the world we live in.Rent it before you buy it!!! It's So Worth It!!! If you loved this film "Knocked Up" will rock your world on HD DVD.
not your typical movie.......2007-08-14
As a virgin myself, I found the 40-Year Old Virgin absolutely hysterical. This film contains the kind of humor that starts off quite normal and inoffensive, then as the plot rolls along some very adult-like jokes are surprisingly thrown into the mix. Definitely not a movie for children. However, the acting is quite phenomenal, and the story of how a man goes from being single all his life to suddenly finding the right woman was done really well. I also liked the ending a lot and the right song was definitely playing (an old instrumental from the 70's). That was the right song because I can only imagine the moment after losing your virginity, you become temporarily speechless and therefore, a vocal melody wouldn't work. Perfect choice! Great movie overall. Definitely a movie where the humor is more interesting and intelligent compared to all those typical teen movies people keep comparing this movie to.
Actually Kinda Gross.......2007-08-03
After reading all the hype about how funny and amazing this film was all I can say is YUCK. Steve Carrell stars as a nerdy 40 year old virgin who works at a Circuit-City style store. After agreeing to play poker with some co-workers his newfound friends discover he is a virgin and decide to help him get laid.
Okay, It could've been funny with a premise like this, but the characters resorted to cheap shots. The asian-hair removal place, the drunk chick throwing up on the hero, the drag queen etc. This was just puerile gross-out humor. When he finally does find the 'woman of his dreams,' the romance is predictable and boring. Also was it neccessary to show so many saggy-chested silcone enhanced topless women? Gross.
This movie seemed cheap and tacky and I didn't laugh once.

Best of two worlds.......2007-09-16
This dvd is an awesome buy. If you like Daft Punk and Anime, get it. If you like either one, get it. If you don't like either, this may change your mind.
When Daft Punk was morking on their album 'Discovery' the contacted one of their idols in animation, Leiji Mastumoto. Matsumoto is famous manga like 'Galxay Express 999' or anime 'Space Battleship Yamamoto". They wanted an animated story told through thier music. There is no spoken dialog during the whole film, just Daft Punks unique style of elctronic music and their lyrics. This pairing seems to work exceedingly well.
I actualy make fan music videos for some of my favorite anime an must say that this is very brilliant seeing somthing similar so professionaly done.
I call this best of both worlds because not only does it pair good elctronic music and great classic anime. It also joins some culture across the globe, Paris and Tokyo and gaining ground in the USA
Check it out, its welll worth it.
Ideal Symbiosis of Music and Anime.......2007-09-15
Director Kazuhisa Takenochi and Daft Punk have created a must-see video that combines the disctictive style of Daft Punk with eye pleasing Japanese animation. By themselves, each would hold their own in entertainment value. Together, it's a wonderful mixture of sci-fi and techno-pop. Must see (and hear).
Anime Daft Punk.......2007-09-11
This is one of my favorite movies I own, the DVD is the Discovery album set to animation with a really good story to go along with it. The entire movie just uses Daft Punks music there is no dialog or any other kind of music. The story, for the most part, is easy to understand if you just watch the movie from start to end. This really is a great buy if you're a fan of Daft Punk. To be honest I put this DVD on almost every night, it's great to watch and if you fall asleep you still have the great music of Daft Punk
Great movie... BRILLIANT SDTK!.......2007-07-29
Daft Punk is one of my favourite artist ever. they changed the game in house/dance music. DISCOVERY is one of my favourite LPs of all time. there was such a variety of music on the LP ranging from house to r&b to rock to funk that you cant label it just dance. when i saw the first 4 videos i didnt kno they were part of a movie. i finally bought the DVD and watched the entire thing and was hooked. there is no dialogue but you get so attached to each song/scene as the movie plays.
its just great how each scene going with the music that keeps you on the edge of your seat. my favourite song on the LP and my favourite scene in the movie is 'superheros'. i just love the was that they had the orchestra and the hero swooping down to save the aliens.
the only thing i did not like about the DVD is that the special features are hard to understand since they dont label them. so if you wanna watch the features then you HAVE to watch all of them just to know which one is which...
i recommmend this movie to anyone that loves a great anime with excellent music.
5 stars out of 5
Freedom from oppression and the power of Love - what more can you ask for?.......2007-07-03
As an adult who dislikes both anime and Techno music, I was vastly surprised by Interstella 5555. I viewed the first few videos on a popular video-sharing website, almost by accident. By the time I got through with installment 4 ["Digital Love"], I was completely and totally HOOKED. "OMG he CRASHED, oh no!... what now?!" One of the things that sets this DVD apart is how much and how quickly it makes you care about the characters. When was the last time you cared what happened to a character in a music video? I was doomed; I simply had to find out what happened, not to mention I wanted to see it in a more appropriate format, so I bought my own copy.
This saga of a kidnapped alien pop/rock band and the fan trying desperately to rescue them, no matter the cost to himself is a beautifully-done DVD with images that you will not quickly forget, people you will love and music that will stay in your head for days - if not weeks, and in this case, that is a positive thing. I think "brilliant" is not too strong a word for this project... and remember, that's coming from someone who has always hated anime. Highly recommended.

Previously criticized for her marginal acting skills, Sofia Coppola made her directorial debut with The Virgin Suicides and silenced her detractors. No amount of coaching from her director father (Francis Coppola) or husband (Spike Jonze) could have guaranteed a film this assured, and in adapting Jeffrey Eugenides's novel, Coppola demonstrates the sensitivity and emotional depth that this material demands. Surely the pain of youth and public criticism found its way into her directorial voice; in the story of four sisters who self-destruct under the steady erosion of their youthful ideals, one can clearly sense Coppola's intimate connection to the inner lives of her characters.
Played in a delicate minor key, the film is heartbreaking, mysterious, and soulfully funny, set in a Michigan suburb of the mid-1970s but timeless and universal to anyone who's been a teenager. The four surviving Lisbon sisters lost a sibling to suicide, and as its title suggests, the film will chart their mutual course to oblivion under the vigilance of repressive parents (Kathleen Turner and James Woods, perfectly cast). But The Virgin Suicides is more concerned with life in that precious interlude of adolescence, when the Lisbon girls are worshipped by the neighborhood boys, their notion of perfection epitomized by Lux (Kirsten Dunst) and her storybook love for high-school stud Trip (Josh Hartnett). Unfolding at the cusp of innocence and sexual awakening, and recalled as a memory, The Virgin Suicides is, ultimately, about the preservation of the Lisbon sisters by their own deaths--suspended in time, polished to perfection, and forever untainted by adulthood. --Jeff Shannon

Desert for Cinema.......2007-07-30
The Virgin Suicides is a movie for kids about kid's world.
Five unjustifiable suicides are added to give a thrill and make the adults consume too.
Cecile's suicide is the only enigmatic one. For the others, why not wait to become eighteen? Lux was seventeen less than one year older and she could leave home.
What I wonder is what made americans turn the book into a besteseller!!!!
Sofia Needs a Challenge.......2007-07-28
The reviewer who characterized this film as a "two-hour tampon commercial" put it so aptly that I have little to add. It's understandable that a woman director should be inclined towards women's stories but enough already with sultry and girlish emotions! Break away! Make some movies. A couple of ideas: Biker Chicks from Mars! Or, Granny Got Her Gun! This will be my last Sofia Coppola film for a long time.
Weak and thrown together........2007-07-20
The Virgin Suicides. When I think about the name of this movie and the actors/actresses who play the lead characters, a different sort of plot comes to my mind. I pictured a silly high school comedy. Instead, I got a supposed "deep" film about suicide.
No, Josh Hartnett and Kirsten Dunst aren't playing their normal roles. Fans of theirs will be shocked to see how different this movie is from the rest. However, this isn't a good thing.
What's The Virgin Suicides about? I'd attempt to tell you but there's a lack of a consistent plot. While watching the first 20 minutes or so, you hear the narrator say clear and concisely what is going to happen at the end of the film. Which leads to absolutely no climax nor surprise. So now that we know how the movie ultimately ends, the writer must then fill preceding scenes with important events in order to keep the audience entertained, right? Not so much. I knew before watching this film that it was based on a book and it is incredibly obvious considering it seems as though the majority of the scenes were randomly picked from the book, regardless if they were important or relevant to the storyline or not.
I was left with the impression that you have to be one of those artsy people who love to analyze things (poems, books, movies) in order to think this movie was any good. Let's get one thing straight. You don't need to have sex, attractive actors/actresses, bad jokes, a great lesson, thrills, or a beginning, middle, and end to make a great movie. What you DO need is to try to pull in the audience and attempt to tug at their emotions (whether you want them to feel scared, sympathetic, happy, or whatever). And when there is a lack of evolved characters (as there was in this movie), there are no emotions. No emotions, just questions. Like were there other secret meanings behind certain scenes that appeared to be completely irrelevant? Was I supposed to feel sympathy for the girls for killing themselves when there was not only a huge lack of character development but also no valid explanation for why it was done? Was I supposed to understand why the boys were so infatuated with the girls? Was there a point to this movie?
Bottom line, if the idea of a movie about 4 girls killing themselves because their parents punished them for missing curfew sounds bad to you, skip this movie. In my opinion, the 5 star reviews that were given for this movie came from people who read the book and/or people who try to make the movie deeper than it actually is. As a movie based on a book, this movie can in no way stand on its own.
Sensual and tragic.......2007-06-12
I've been hypnotized by this film from the moment it came out, and by the book before it.
Eugenides' novel reads like a series of glimpses into the mystery that is (or was) the Lisbon girls. I think Sofia Coppola does a wonderful job of transferring that humid, dreamy atmosphere to film.
There is a danger that because the film is so delicate it may float away, but the soundtrack keeps it anchored; in particular, the use of Heart songs throughout the Lux and Trip love affair.
Kathleen Turner is great as Mrs. Lisbon, making her human and making the audience feel for her even as she puts her four daughters in lockdown.
Kirsten Dunst, of whom I am a fan, is pitch-perfect as Lux, struggling with womanhood in the stifling atmosphere of the Lisbon household. I think it is best expressed when Lux conducts various affairs on the roof. She rebels even though she is virtually tied to the house. Kirsten Dunst pulls it off with a subtlety one can also see in films like Interview with the Vampire and Marie Antoinette, another film by Sofia Coppola.
This film is definitely worth seeing over and over again. Check it out!
The Virgin Suicides.......2007-06-10
I read the book about two months before I saw the movie. I read the book over and over again, asking the same question that the confused teenaged boys did in the story: Why? Now, they never figured it out, and did not intend to, seeing as how the fantasy of the five sisters was more important than the questions of reality. However, unlike the neighborhood boys, I thought I'd missed something. A word, a phrase, a motif that went unnoticed. I figured out that I hadn't missed anything, and was partially put off by the fact that I couldn't find a concrete explanation.
After seeing this film, I understand a little more than I did when reading the book. Ms. Coppola takes direction of an already concrete literary work, and changes perspective so that the things that cannot be explained are at least felt in some manner. The book focuses on the boys perspective ( which is the fantasy focus of the book)just enough to make readers wonder more about the girls. Sofia, shifts that just enough, not to lose the dreamy fantasy quality, but to layer it on top of the reality. We understand and feel the boys' desire becoming something that resembles a dream/fantasy, but we also get into the girls' minds just enough to take the edge off of the desire to know why. We are in the room with all five of them as they listen on the telephone trying to reach out to a world that they've been snatched out of ( in the book, we get more of a view of the condition of the lawn, the fact that no one leaves to go to the store, but has grocery delivered, etc.). We see the sun rise and set as the days go by, knowing that the sisters can only watch from a window. Those small moments, that feed the story from a different angle, make this movie great. Its delicately crafted direction and touch of feminine perspective makes the movie something you can watch without fear of another book-turned-movie catastrophe.

Description
Join the Joie de Vivre club with the maddeningly charming Lola, as she plots to loosen up her fiancé in this exuberant comedy. Everyone is wild about Lola - even, some suspect, her own stepfather
Originally titled "Monella (Rascal)", "Frivolous Lola" has generally been available in censored versions. Here, for the first time outside of Italy, and with Subtitles, is the uncut masterwork of erotica at its most humorous. Long renowned for his work in documentaries and the avant-garde, director Tinto Brass is now famous as the world's premier erotic filmmaker, turning out movies that have bridged the gender gap, earning at least as many ardent female admirers as male fans. "Frivolous Lola" is perhaps his most likeable film yet.

great entertainment.......2007-07-11
i was going to say great adult entertainment but thought that adult would give too much the 'adult' inference. this is a fun, ribald, humourous, risque and adult flick. not porno, just adult in its moods, humor and visuals. a type of flick not made anymore, just adult fun.
Get stuff low tec adult fav.......2007-05-25
Great, loved, and fun too. This film nice to watch when there's nothing you got in your DVD Adult collection.I'm a big fan of Tinto Brass it's to bad some of Hollywood movie machine studio don't pruduce the guy film, but thank god they don't his film are really racey.I'm being kind by saying that.I lot of other filmmakers try to follow this guyd film and some filmmaker sucseed and some failed badly.
Cheeky is a good film for adult lots of nudity and sex.
For thoughs who like soft core film this is it
I say buy it.
You Rascal You.......2007-02-15
This is a waste of film. Tinto Brass probably wanted to make a tease-flick, but this is just a shame. The young lady who can't keep her skirt down flaunts her desire for sex before marriage in such a way as to embarass the viewer - especially shameful is the bar scene where she keeps displaying her crotch to a table of soldiers in order to get her boyfriend jealous. Too bad this went too far. The Italian title, "Rascal," is a better fit for this one.
Whatever Lola Wants.......2007-01-13
It seems to be a leading lady in a Tinto Brass film you must:
* Be young and attractive
* Have an exceptional sensuous body
* Not be shy about nudity
* Exude a cheerful, lighthearted persona
* Act loveably naughty.
That has been the case in the previous Brass films I have watched and reviewed and Frivolous Lola is no exception. Rumor has it that the inscrutable producer of erotica met the vivacious young actress, Anna Ammirati while examining her body. The body of her car that is, after being involved in a traffic accident with her. It doesn't matter whose fault it was, the outcome was inevitable - Anna gallivanting around with little or no clothing in his next movie. Anna is reputed to have entreated the enigmatic director to feature her in his next movie and a enchanting match was born.
The Plot
Lola is a carefree lass in an unnamed village in Italy of some notoriety and gossip. Her mother who grew up there, left years before but returned with a handsome paramour, Andr'e and a vibrant sexually precocious teen daughter, Lola.
Lola is a virgin a condition she dislikes. She is engaged to the son of the village baker, Masetto, whom she wants to deflower her. Masetto would like to wait for their wedding night and this frustrates Lola.
A sub plot of the movie is Lola's relationship with her alleged father, Andr'e. They both find each other and find each other attractive.
The Story
The story revolves around Lola's efforts to get Masetto to make love with her and thus take her virginity. She tries various tricks, including making him jealous by coming on with other men. There was even a scene in a tavern where she is jitterbugging with three soldiers, sans her panties, with flashes of her genital folds and pubis.
Lola's alleged father Andr'e fascinates her. He is somewhat of a leach with prurient instincts and she is drawn to and fanaticizes about him. She makes a couple unsuccessful attempts to seduce him.
In the end Lola does trick Masetto into deflowering her - her term and at their wedding the next day a scene takes place between Lola and Andr'e where you are left wondering, no believing that they also have sex.
In hindsight it may be a take on that old song of the fifties, "Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets."
Conclusion
Lola is indeed frivolous and afew other adjectives ranging from adorable to bratty. Her self-centered thoughtless behavior is nothing short of tawdry. If there are women that behave so flippant, I wouldn't want to be engaged to them. Yet, as a viewer there is something winsome about her frolicsome, lighthearted, even compelling behavior.
As with other Brass movies I have viewed a typical theme permeates Frivolous Lola. Nothing is shameful to her. She with the overactive libido was born to enjoy life and she resents anyone that wants to rein her in, while her man is supposed to go along with her indiscretions
Frivolous Lola is an exercise in exhibitionism. The movie seems to be a memorial to Lola's or is it Anna Amirati's shapely figure with voyeuristic peeks at her genitalia. The story seems incidental, it is merely a vehicle to attain the desired effect.
I do not mean to sound like this is bad. Contrary, it is good. I found the movie to be funny entertaining and stimulating - one of his best and one of the better erotica movies available.
The lovely Anna Amirati was uniformly naughty and loveable. Her body was adorable and her acting endearing. Supporting actors, Packtrick Mower and Mario Parodi did well too.
The film was shot in what appeared to be the Italian countryside. The sets and costumes were colorful and the cinematography was first rate. Rating 4.6 stars
Save your money.......2006-11-10
Soft core porn masquerading as art, I didn't even make it through the first half hour of this film. Lola's cute, but it's still not worth the effort.

A "let's get laid" favorite from the teen-comedy trend of the early 1980s, The Last American Virgin is beloved enough to earn its own fan-driven website, and it's still lots of fun. While tapping into the same zeitgeist that popularized Fast Times at Ridgemont High (which was released just one week earlier), this above-average sex comedy mixes high-school high jinks with the real anguish of unrequited love, as a nice kid named Gary (Lawrence Monoson) falls for Karen (Diane Franklin), a cute classmate who won't return his affections. Gary delivers pizza, leading to the comic highlight when his horny pals (Steve Antin, Joe Rubbo) deliver more than pizza to a lonely Latina bombshell (Louisa Moritz). But Gary wants his "first time" to be special, and director Boaz Davidson smartly avoids the obvious by denying Gary of the thing he wants most. Intended as the first in a series of remakes of the Israeli "Lemon Popsicle" comedies of the 1970s, The Last American Virgin offers abundant nudity, a recycled soundtrack of '80s hits, and plenty of hair mousse, but it's genuine hormonal angst that's given it a lasting reputation. --Jeff Shannon

Reality in a Hollywood movie?.......2007-04-11
The ending made this movie. Its not often that you can say a Hollywood movie reflects real life so spot on. This movie sums up the poor decision makeing (men and women) that is rampent when love is involved. It's no wonder 50% of all marriges end in devorce. Smoke and mirrors and refuseing to see the facts
I love this movie.......2007-04-01
I have loved it ever since I saw it in 1991( I was 10 at the time). It came on Tv. and I was hooked ever since. It was so so hard to find this movie. I always wanted to rent the movie, but the video stores never had it. I found it on amazon, so I had to buy it. I am now the proud owner of this hard to find movie
This is your teen movie you have to see. The ending made me cry, well almost. Karen totally did Gary dirty, after all that he did for her, when she got pregnant by his friend, who didn't want to claim the baby.
Gary was to nice, but he was in love with the girl. But I don't know if I would talk to my friend who did something like that to me. especially since he knew gary liked Karen.
Deconstruction of the fictitious "American dream".......2007-03-01
After failing miserably in "The Karate Kid," unable to convince moviegoers that he could ever be a winner, here Ralph Macchio plays a more believable sap. And his girlfriend, far from cheering him on while he incapacitates his adversaries with "The Swan," turns out to be no more than an abortion-happy tramp in a pretty package. So true, so true. She basically dumps him for the sensei's testosterone-chewin' pet protege and from then on, Ralph is nauseated by the thought of having sex ... with girls anyway.

Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore is one of the staples of the comic opera repertory. The plot hinges on whether earnest but dim-witted Nemorino will snag Adina, the flirtatious heroine. She's a tease who takes up with Belcore, an army sergeant, to make Nemorino jealous. After numerous (and humorous) plot twists that include a phony love potion, it all ends happily. Adina and Nemorino declare their love for each other, Belcore is dumped, and the fraudulent Dulcamara does a landslide business in love potions. It's all a fast-moving bundle of fun, especially with the star-filled cast of this 2005 Vienna State Opera performance.
The leads are magnificent. Rolando Villazón as Nemorino exhibits a real gift for comic acting, manipulating his rubber face into dozens of hilarious poses, flawlessly turning stock comic gestures into laugh-out-loud moments, and even juggling apples with the panache of a circus performer. More important, he uses his lyric tenor to sing the part with impressive subtlety, suggesting Nemorino's desperation while singing of his love for Adina. His big show-stopper, "Una furtuva lagrima," features melting pianissimos and a breathtaking decrescendo in its final phrase. It literally stops the show, the audience forcing a welcome encore. Netrebko's Adina is every bit as good, with deft acting and a lovely lyric soprano voice that makes you understand why she's the only girl for Nemorino. Dulcamara is Ildebrando D'Arcangelo, whose ample bass joins a stage presence that puts him at the center of his scenes. His famous duet, "Venti scudi," with Villazón, is the highlight it should be. Veteran baritone Leo Nucci is Sergeant Belcore and while his singing tends to the dry and effortful, he's convincingly sleazy, adding to the laughs. Smaller parts and the chorus are fine and conductor Alfred Eschwé efficiently keeps the music bubbling along.
Otto Schenk's production, with sets and costumes by Jürgen Rose, dates from 1980 but still looks fresh with a village square dominating the picture-postcard view of a provincial Italian village. The costumes are realistic, with predominantly pastel colors for the villagers, bright colors for Belcore and his soldiers, and relatively nondescript outfits for the others, though Netrebko can't help exuding glamour no matter what she wears. The video direction smoothly focuses on singers and the stage action, but the sound recording is overly resonant, with inconsistent dynamics and the chorus' words obscured. Still, this is the preferred L'Elisir d'Amore. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful, except for..........2007-09-11
I agree with all the good comments here. But am I the only one who finds that there's something wrong with the miking? The recording mikes seem to be too far from the singers, so that the orchestra and soloists are sometimes out of balance. I keep having to adjust the volume level. Other than that, it's gorgeous...netrebko and villazon are wonderful...
A L'elisir for the ages........2007-08-06
Buy this DVD! Rolando Villazon is one of the great tenors of the past 100 years, something that I feel is safe to say even though he has barely reached mid-career (the fates be willing). He is in rare voice throughout this performance and his performance and encore of Una furtiva lagrima are as fine as you will hear of this aria, even from Caruso or Gigli -- the first time he sings it as a tenore leggiero and the second time as a spinto. You can pick and choose which version you like better, but you can have both. Netrebko is outstanding as Adina. While she has her critics, I find her voice and her acting to be irresistible in general, and this role is hardly "too big" for her voice. She gives the role plenty of character, too. The rest of the cast does the buffo business very well. This is a must have performance.
laughter in country love.......2007-06-17
Yes the acting of Rolando was out there but in opera if you are to see the smallest nuances you need to act big .TV and DVD home in on these parts which do look hammed up close but from the back of the theatre I am sure they are just right.I truely loved this opera it was so much a bright up beat production. There is little enough in opera repetoire for the singers to have fun and this is one where the lighter side and sillier side has its day.The addition of the live donkey reminded me of a programme with Birgit Nielsen doing the Ring cycle and lustily singing for her horse ,the look on her face when the stage hands brought in a real horse was worth its wieght in gold.(needless to say she didn't stop until the horse returned that was it she gave up !!)So who cares if caterpillar eyes are over the top I personnaly found this whole production to be a brilliant piece of musical entertainment with a wonderful cast and some really funny moments
Anna, call me? haha blushes.............2007-06-15
The major culprit here is Villazon, who never stops moving and mugging for a single moment. With his Harpo Marx hair and caterpillar eyebrows, he's a walking cartoon, and he plays the character less as an open, uncomplicated bumpkin and more like the village idiot. One longs to tie his hands behind his back and yell "Don't just do something, stand there!"
what?! haha oh man that's HILARIOUS! I nearly soiled myself haha yea that's entertainment for ya, its vison oriented, sometimes way out funny, but pick one music genre that isn't vision oriented? Country, rock, etc etc, we like to see as well as listen, or buy the cd. People do not support, mostly they don't, fat and or ugly performers, but people like good looks and or characters.
And the bottom line, in life is, Villazon has got more money than any of us or most people, and gets more chicks than us, and most people, so who is having the last laugh huh? That is the bottom line in life eh? Look at history, so that's not my opinion
Now Anna, what it must be like to be her, think there is a man around that is man enough for her? Not me that's for sure, and I can't think of many either. What a stunning woman. Is she married? Nothing on her Wikipedia spot
No I couldn't give her even half of what she deserves. How many can?
What man in the entire world wouldn't mind hearing her as his wife listening to her sing while she is moving about the house while he reads and smokes a pipe in his den? Sigh
ANOTHER STUNNING L'ELISIR.......2007-06-07
Some operas live charmed lives both on DVD and CD. This is one of them. We have the Met/Pavarotti-Battle DVD and the Scotto-Bergonzi DVD. We also have several great casts on just CD and almost everyone of them presents an accurate presentation of what the composer asks for. This is not as easy as it sounds. Many Traviatas fall short of our expectations; just to name one opera that gets over recorded and not always well. Now let me be honest and say I don't always enjoy or get into much comic opera; Don Giovanni being an exception. It's really a comedy, tragedy and old fashioned morality play all rolled into one. Absurd plots and many farces just don't cut it with me. I took a risk on this DVD just to see and hear Netrebko and Villazon. I am not disappointed! This entire cast and production do Donizetti and this opera full justice. Netrebko is enchanting. Villazon is unique and special. He's almost Groucho Marx with a great voice. His entire face and body is an actor's dream come true and he can sing while being so physically flexible. His voice strikes my ear as having a little bit of Domingo and DiStefano in it. The aria "Una Furtiva Lagrima" has to be encored and is even slightly better the second time. After all his comic posturing his straight forward singing here is just a perfect contrast to all that came before. This DVD should be added to the Battle/Pavarotti and Scotto/Bergonzi if you already own them. Like I said I'm not the biggest fan of comic opera; yet, this production completely won me over. This is an enchanting evening for eye and ear with some glorious melodies by Donizetti. ENJOY!!!

A Welcome Addition to the Bowie Catalog.......2007-08-17
This dvd confirms what I long suspected: The conventional wisdom has always been that Bowie had creatively dried out during the mid to late 1980s, and, though there's some truth in it, this dvd confirms that there was still a lot of passion in him. Certainly "Tonight" and "Never Let Me Down" rank among the lowest in his full catalog, but Loving the Alien and Blue Jean are classics, and "Never Let Me Down" (the album for which Bowie was touring at this time) has always struck me as underappreciated. Given the time-period and Bowie's propensity for theatricality, some of this concert veers too far to the bombastic and, at times, the cheezy, and sometimes the 80s synthesizer comes in when it really shouldn't - but get past that (or appreciate it as part of the package), and there are some real treats here.
I particularly enjoy watching the dvd alongside the Spiders from Mars, Serious Moonlight, and Reality Tour dvds, as it's great to hear these songs played in different eras, with the arrangements reflecting the time period.
Of interest with this version of the Glass Spider dvd is the inclusion of two cds of concert material. A number of the songs on the cds do not appear on the dvd (Scary Monsters, '87 and Cry, All the Mad Men, Time Will Crawl, Beat of Your Drum, and Big Brother). A pair of songs from the dvd do not appear on cd (White Light/White Heat and I Want to Be Your Dog). In truth, those songs aren't missed. White Light/White Heat was done better on other of Bowie's live albums, and I Want to Be Your Dog just doesn't quite work for me. So, trading those songs for Scary Monsters and Big Brother suits me just fine.
If you're not already a big fan, there are probably better places to start out (like the Spiders from Mars or Reality Tour dvds). For those who like Bowie's 80s output, though, I certainly recommend this.
Finally.......2007-08-11
I have the VHS of this show. To this point I have been longing for a DVD release. When I saw this coming out along with a live cd, I placed my order. Finally, live David Bowie on CD. With the exception of the Ziggy Stardust soundtrack and a handful of dvd's including The Reality Tour, what else is there? The sound is impeccable, great mastering. I originally recorded the audio off the VHS to a cassette tape so that I could listen to it in the car, pretty pathetic. Now I have the cd's and am very impressed with the sound. The track selection differs slightly between the dvd and the cd, different shows. My only complaint, and it's minor, I wish the blistering version of Lou Reed's White Light White Heat was on the cd. Otherwise this is 5 stars. What else could it be? This is live David Bowie.
Sequencing problem with songs on CD.......2007-08-09
I remember seeing this tour in Philadelphia and it rocked super hard. Love Bowie and how creative he can be. The staging for this Glass Spider tour was his best ever. Love the music and visuals but I'm very disappointed that the sequence and labeling of some songs on the CDs are wrong. When I loaded the CDs into my iTunes library songs are mis-labeled so the first version of "Hereos" is something else. You'd think with how cutting edge Bowie is he'd let the production of this package go out in such bad shape. Anybody else find this issue?
Love The Music, Not The Stage Production.......2007-08-05
Ah... the infamous Glass Spider. My very first Bowie show back in 1987. This tour's stage production took a lot of knocks back then: over the top, too many dancers, Bowie's hair and the ridiculous costumes... but hey - it was the 1980s...
If you can get past all the criticisms, however, you can enoy a pretty good career overview of Bowie's music... all the hits are there but we also get great version's of 'Absolute Beginners' (rarely played live)... a wonderful duet with Peter Frampton on 'Sons of the Silent Age'... a funky 'Young Americans'... a dramatic version of the Bowie classic 'Time'... and 2 smoking cover tunes Iggy Pop's 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' & Lou Reed's 'White Light/White Heat'...
Enjoy this dvd as it appears that Bowie might have started his retirement and all we have to enjoy is what he has done in the past.
No, it's not Bowie's best, but I'm still thrilled to have it!.......2007-08-02
The infamous "Glass Spider" tour was the first time I saw Bowie live. The popular myth is that it was a grandiose and overblown. To be honest, this is true. What is not true, however, is any claim that the musical element was somehow lacking.
Even if you don't love the songs from Bowie's then-current album "Never Let Me Down," though I do quite like many of them), there were more than enough gems from the deep in the Bowie canon to satisfy all but the most curmudgeonly. Rarities like "All the Mad Men" and "Sons of the Silent Age" mesh surprisingly well with (what were then) newer songs like "Loving the Alien" and "Time Will Crawl." Throw in strong renditions of favorites like "Heroes" and Young Americans," and the fact is you've got quite a show.
The great thing about this release is that it's a CD and DVD set. If you don't like the visuals of the show, pop in the CD. If you're a Bowie fan, you're sure to find at least a few reasons to be glad you did. Now, if they'd only release something from his 1995 tour with Nine Inch Nails.

Exotic locales and famous monuments! Adagios and waltzes! Spectacle and bombast! A didgeridoo and an orchestra too! Yanni's amazing hair!! All this and much more make Tribute a feast sure to be eagerly devoured by the Greek composer-keyboardist's legions of fans--and it's not hard to understand why, as it is an impressive achievement. The DVD chronicles Yanni's 1997 concerts at India's Taj Mahal (the first concert staged there) and Beijing's Forbidden City (the first-ever performance there by a Western artist), and these splendid settings are certainly shown to good effect throughout this well-directed, great-sounding program. As for the music, well, that's all a matter of taste; what might be schlocky to one person will be beautiful and majestic to another. But regardless of one's musical leanings, no one can dispute that the 90-minute concert, combining numbers from both locations, provides a healthy and representative dose of Yanni's New Age-cum-classical-cum-world music sounds, and they are well played by the international cast of nearly 50 musicians and singers (violinist Karen Briggs and guitarist Pedro Eustache acquit themselves especially well among the soloists).
And that's not all, as the DVD is loaded with bonus features. Principal among them is "No Borders, No Boundaries," a beautifully photographed, hourlong film narrated by actor Christopher Plummer; part documentary and part travelogue, it contains musician profiles, Yanni biographical material, some Indian and Chinese history, and information about how the concerts came about. Other features include a lengthy Yanni interview and discography, as well as audio options. In the end, Yanni detractors are unlikely to be converted, but then, they can always put on their Limp Bizkit CDs instead. --Sam Graham
From the Back Cover
A remarkable, unprecedented project, and a PBS special, Tribute was produced during the first concert staged at the Taj Mahal, and the first performance by a Western artist at the Forbidden City. In the midst of these global treasures, Yanni debuted his first new works since 1992. Also included, as a bonus, is the 56-minute companion to the PBS show, No Borders, No Boundaries, narrated by Christopher Plummer. This is a unique film journal describing the extraordinary effort, purpose, and achievement of these groundbreaking performances. Tracks: Deliverance, Adagio in C Minor, Renegade, Waltz in 7/8, Tribute, Dance with a Stranger, Nightingale, Southern Exposure, Prelude, Love Is All, Niki Nana (We're One), Santorini.

My Most Frequently-Played Disc Over The Years.......2007-09-09
There is no concert I have watched more than this one since I first bought the VHS tape and then acquired the DVD when that came out. After many, many viewings of it, its still great stuff - especially that first 50 minutes.
The music is a little bit more diverse than on Yanni's first concert DVD: "At The Acropolis." This concert features India's Taj Mahal and China's Forbidden City, In addition to the music, we have stunning color added;a great mix of purples, yellows, blues, pinks, etc. The concert stages - particularly in China - are bathed in these colors.
For most of my many, many viewings of this I would have the opening song, "Deliverance," and the title tune, "Tribute," are my two favorites.
Although many of Yanni's band members from the first concert were not with his group any longer by the time they did this one, they have been replaced by people are even more talented in many cases. It's hard to find a more talented musician that Pedro Eusteache, who plays a number of wind instruments and excels, of course, in all of them. I'm also in awe of new keyboard player Ming Freeman. These two are still in the orchestra today.
Violinist Karen Briggs is as animated and talented as ever and, along with Eustache, is the feature musician in the band. When the two of them alternate solos, playing off each other in "Renegade," it's about as entertaining a few minutes as you'll ever find on an orchestral stage. I'm sorry Briggs is no longer with Yanni's band.
Ten years after first seeing and hearing this for the first time, I can still safely say music doesn't get much better than this, unless, perhaps, Yanni''s latest: Yanni Live!
Yanni's the Greatest.......2007-06-08
Tribute is one of the Best Concerts Ever. Yanni is the best musician ever and his Tribute album is GOLD. Some of the best pieces of music that Yanni has created are in this album. Performing this great music in front of the Magical Taj Mahal and Forbidden City makes it an unforgetable EVENT
A Must See - Very Powerful.......2007-05-12
When I first saw this video years ago on PBS, the concert was broken into segments of music clips and PBS soliciting for funds, which did it absolutely no justice. Truly the magical power that is embedded into this concert increases as you move through it in a continuous fashion. One can feel the powerful energies of the Taj Mahal as you are embroiled into the music of this concert. It is a masterpiece of talent from around the globe and imparts to the viewer a peaceful energy of love, appreciation and oneness for all the people of the world. It brings one into a space of happiness, joy and spiritual reverance. I can not say enough good things about this concert. It is a must to own for anyone who is awakening to the powers of the Universe.
YANNI - UNIQUE, TALENTED & INSPIRING.......2007-03-17
GIFTED AND TALENTED COMPOSERS LIKE YANNI ARE LIKE RAINBOWS, 'RARE & BEAUTIFUL'. THE FACT THAT HE CHOSE TO SHARE HIS INNER BEAUTY AND INSPIRATION IN THE FORM OF MUSIC WITH THE WORLD ONLY SHOWS YET ANOTHER OF HIS GIFTED QUALITIES, HIS LOVE AND COMPASSION FOR LIFE AND HUMANITY. IF ONLY WE HAD MORE PEOPLE LIKE YANNI, THIS WOULD BE A MORE PEACEFUL AND SERENE WORLD. THANK YOU YANNI.
Yanni: Tribute.......2007-03-15
Of course, it all started with Yanni: Live At The Acropolis. The intoxicating mixture of upbeat and romantic/nostalgic moods with that catchy Greek rhythm. A soundtrack for any life with all its highs and lows, happiness and sadness, triumph and tragedy. And then Yanni realizes that all cultures have music to offer and that music transcends languages and barriers of all types, as well as ages! And so along comes Tribute, enhanced by the souls and instruments of different cultures inhabiting the world of today as well as ages long past and almost forgotten. And as exciting as the concert is to watch; both the performers and the audience, it only whets the appetite to have an opportunity to see a live performance. To be part of that whirl of humanity and to drop all mental and physical barriers so that you can be part of that collective world dance that celebrates life and its gifts.

Description
As The Virgin Queen begins, a young Elizabeth is imprisoned in the Tower of London by Queen Mary, charged with conspiracy and treason. Both women are daughters of the ruthless and oft-married Henry VIII, who plunged England into turmoil by breaking with the Roman Catholic Church. Mary wants to reunite with Rome, while Elizabeth is determined to stand by her Protestant faith--a potentially fatal choice. But Elizabeth's life takes an unexpected turn when Mary dies, leaving no heir to the throne. As the new queen, Elizabeth discovers the harsh realities of ruling a religiously divided nation and must learn to outwit her enemies and charm those who conspire to their own ends.
Soon under pressure to secure a politically advantageous marriage, the coquettish Elizabeth rejects a string of eligible royal bachelors from abroad, openly preferring the burning affections of her childhood playmate, the athletic, handsome--and married--Robert Dudley. But is she toying with him as she is with her other suitors?
Starring Anne-Marie Duff (The Aristocrats, The Magdalene Sisters) as the shrewd and captivating queen who defended her throne amidst an atmosphere of plotting and intrigue, torture and murder, The Virgin Queen is a riveting drama that explores the fascinating 44-year reign of Elizabeth I.

fantastic work of art reaching the highest levels of excellence.......2007-09-02
at first i thought this was some mushy love story but the resemblence of mrs duff to the queen intreaged me. the awsum detail in costume, loacation and acting tells the story well of one of my favorite queens this woman lived with treachery, deciet, and plots of assasination around every corner and though she looked like a frail little girl she could be as vicious as a tiger and from time to time she was . this is as much of a work of art as the mona lisa in my book .watching this makes you feel like your there and the musical score was haunting but worked very well wish they'ed put it on cd
The most true movie I have seen.......2007-05-15
I have watched several movies and read several books on Queen Elizabeth and this is by far the most accurate movie available. Although I love all movies about Queen Elizabeth I have found this one to be the most historicaly correct.
Elizabeth Queen of England.......2007-05-13
I enjoyed the story very much. Besides being a fasinating story, I felt that it also was historically accurate. I highly recommend it.
Delightful to watch and watch again..........2007-04-10
Five stars. And five stars to the reviewer "Buck Bauer" whose review pointed me to Amazon.co.uk as a source for the soundtrack. It seems that folks either love or hate the music. I ADORE it and am thrilled to have finally obtained a copy. I was really struggling with the lyrics of what I believe is the first song in the movie. On watching the Helen Mirren version of Elizabeth I on HBO I connected the lyrics to the poem by Elizabeth I "On Monsieur's Departure"
It's hardly worth comparing the various portrayals of Elizabeth I. All versions are interesting and stand on their own. And I agree with another viewer who feels that Tilda Swinton (outstanding in "Orlando" - another film with a haunting soundtrack) would perhaps make the best Elizabeth I yet.
Trust me.......2007-04-09
I wrote up a rather length and detailed review of this excellent series and then the computer crashed. Divine intervention!?
Suffice it to say that this is a marvelous drama for both new and old fans of the English history genre. Anne Marie Duff and a stellar supporting cast (Tom Hardy and the magnetic Derek Riddell deserve special recognition) make it even more compelling than the celebrity-driven versions more well known. Forgive some erratic direction, phony looking glue-on facial hair, Essex's hyped up Oedipal complex and frequently too on-the-nose dialogue and just enjoy the performances, production values and even soundtrack. While it curious that this UK-filmed miniseries seems strangely devoid of any rain maybe Gloriana was so named for the weather!), it is a first rate work well worth the 4 hours' viewing.
