Fairy tales and contemporary satire collide in Ella Enchanted, based upon the enormously popular young adult novel by Gail Carson Levine. Ella (Anne Hathaway, The Princess Diaries) received an unfortunate fairy gift in her cradle: No matter what anyone tells her to do, she's compelled to obey. Despite this, Ella grows up to be a headstrong young woman who refuses to swoon at the sight of a charming young prince (Hugh Dancy). To get her gift removed, Ella braves a forest packed with ogres, elves, and giants to find her fairy godmother (Vivica A. Fox, Kill Bill, Vol. 1). Much like Shrek, Ella Enchanted is sprinkled with comic modern references; for some, this will make the whimsy too cute, while others will appreciate the snarky jabs. Also featuring Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride), Minnie Driver, Joanna Lumley, Eric Idle, and many others. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Anne Hathaway, the delightful star of THE PRINCESS DIARIES, is Ella in the charming fairy tale adventure ELLA ENCHANTED. On the day of her birth, Ella is given a gift by her Fairy Godmother -- the gift of obedience, which is also a curse. Under no circumstances can Ella refuse anything she is asked to do, no matter how wicked it may be. Tired of being taken advantage of, Ella, with a talking book as her companion, leaves home to find her Fairy Godmother and return her unwanted gift. This simple errand soon turns into an amazing journey filled with ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, elves, and the plotting of Prince Charmont's evil uncle who wants to take over the Crown and rule the kingdom. Bursting with colorful characters, music, wit, and whimsy, ELLA ENCHANTED is a truly enchanting and heartwarming tale that will captivate the entire family.

1 out of 5 stars Cheesy and, well cheesy........2007-09-09

This has almost no redeeming aspects except for the fact that Anne Hathaway is a FABULOUS actress and she makes almost everything at least a teeny bit better. This does the book NO justice whatsoever, and the "Medieval Teen" really pushed it over the edge for me. Disney went too over the top trying to make this a cutesy fairy tale and so they "cutesy"ed it up way too much. And all the good songs they ruined by singing and dancing to them? Not worth it. Girls around 7 [before they read the book and/or are too cynical] might like this movie. But boys of any age, will not.

1 out of 5 stars Total Waste of TIME!!!.......2007-08-17

First of all, I must say that Ella Enchanted has been my favorite book since about the third grade. This movie has nothing in common with this charming and witty story except for some of the same character names. I don't understand why this movie gets any good reviews at all. There is no depth in the plot and Ella is a single-faceted character. The only thing this movie is successful at is turning people off of a wonderful book and kill brain cells. Parents who claim this book is so cute and energetic really must not value their child's intelligence.

5 out of 5 stars Daughter LOVES it.......2007-07-25

My daughter saw this before we bought it and she loves it. She sings and dances during the whole movie, I recommend this movie for any little girl she will enjoy it.

1 out of 5 stars The book is five star, not the movie.......2007-07-25

I like my movies as good as my books and this one fell depressingly short. I had really high hopes for this movie but, I was wrong for it. It doesn't matter, though. After accepting that the movie would never be as good as the book, I shook the thoughts of the book from my mind and decided to see the movie again, without bias. Again, I was disappointed. The script just wasn't good. There was nothing that drew me in and made me feel as though I was experiencing it. I say you save yourself some money and buy a copy of the book. Reading will take about two times more time than watching but you'll get twice the enjoyment out of it.

4 out of 5 stars fun, looney with a point.......2007-06-14

What would life be like if you obeyed literally everything you were told, even accidently, like "spill the beans"? You'd have no choice if someone found out your secret and used it against you. That's the case here, which gives some food for thought, but with lots of silly stuff, a great song and dance by Hathaway, and, of course, a happy ending with a handsome prince. Purely for fun.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone can find peace in a garden.......2007-01-19

Who wouldn't like this movie: great cast, great music, and the most beautiful flowers I've seen in a long time! Most people are only paying attention to Helen Mirren and Clive Owen, but I really enjoyed the performance of Warren Clarke and the actor who played Raw.
For people who liked Helen Mirren as the two Elizabeths, this movie is a sure hit.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, Sweet and Inspiring.......2006-11-24

Ever since The Full Monty, the British have become the main producers of quirky, unusual comedies about ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. Of course, some of them work better than others; Greenfingers works very well indeed. The plot is funny, the writing avoids predictable turns and cliches, and Helen Mirren and Clive Owen lead a wonderful cast. That this movie is inspired by a real story only makes me want to recommend it even more.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but tries a little too hard to be cute!.......2006-05-29

Greenfingers is a story of redemption by horticulture. Clive Owens does a good job of portraying a man imprisoned since he was 18 years old for murder, who ultimately is redeemed by discovering that he can foster life in the garden. At times Owens is too cold and distant--his portrayal would have been better if he had brought a little more variation in his emotional state.

The supporting cast of British character actors do a nice job and are charming and sympathetic. Mirren plays the English matriarch with aplomb but overdoes it a little--just like the screen play which tries a little too hard to be cute at times. The major problem with the movie was a poor soundtrack--it was not well matched with the emotional content of the scenes.

This was a movie that had a lot of potential that did not quite become fulfilled.

5 out of 5 stars The gardening: a point of honor!.......2006-03-07

From time to time the British Cinema shows us treasured pictures where the superb inventiveness of solid and original script shake hands with the British scent and the glamorous visual seduction.

It `s useless to talk about the prestigious level of acting. The most notable feature of this engaging movie resides precisely in the ambiguity of their characters. It is far to be a lineal story; you may realize every one of them is absolutely persuaded and even convinced of the secure triumph in this unbalanced handicap at the moment to establish originality and presence.

The whole weight of the anecdote is what bestows it this diamantine profile. Elegant, seductive and fabulous cinematography support a sensitive and simple story. Helen Mirren once more, steals the show, Clive Owen is superb and Natasha Little is a young promise to take into account in next films. Do not forget her name.

5 out of 5 stars 2 Green Thumbs Up.......2005-12-04

It was very sweet and funny. I think what I loved most about it (besides Clive Owen) is that it is based on a true story. It even had moments that made my boyfriend laugh out loud (rather rare for a chick flick).

Originally made as a two-part TV miniseries, this umpteenth adaptation of Johann Spyri's novel is exceptionally easy on the eyes. Jason Robards plays the grumpy grandfather who tends for the orphaned Swiss girl. Jane Seymour chews up the scenery as the governess to a spoiled, rich city girl whom Heidi is forced to visit. The adults think the invalid Klara (Lexi Randall) needs companionship, but wise old grandpa knows she needs good mountain air and independence. Noley Thornton is sweet enough in the title role and Robards's performance provides depth. This Disney production brings little to the story, but is worth watching for its stunning Alpine vistas. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Description

Heidi, the dispossessed orphan who wants only to love and be loved, ends up charming her embittered grandfather and falling in love with the beautiful mountain he calls home. Heidi is soon uprooted and sent to Frankfurt where she befriends a young girl confined to a wheelchair. But the big city drains Heidi's spirit, and she must struggle with her memory of life in the Alps. In time, she follows her heart and finds a miracle. Starring Jason Robards and Jane Seymour, HEIDI is a triumph of love, friendship, and forgiveness that will capture everyone's heart.

This is the most wonderful version of Heidi. I ordered it as a gift for a child.

1 out of 5 stars A sad adaptation.......2007-08-19

If you know and love the original story (and I mean the unabridged book version) you will probably not like this adaptation. Heidi is one of our favorite family read-alouds--in fact, we read it for the third time last summer while living temporarily in the Swiss alps. This movie is radically different in spirit from the book, which is really a redemption story. In this version, the grandfather is cruel and cold and you really don't see him change too much, except for the obligatory "hug Heidi" scene at the end. Klara is a selfish, manipulative girl who winds up shouting at Heidi, calling her a liar, and telling her she hates her and never wants to see her again. (My children all agreed that they wished Peter had sent the wheelchair down to its doom with Klara sitting in it.) The grandmother dies. There is a quasi-happy ending, but let's just say that it doesn't leave you with a lump in your throat or tears in your eyes. The scenery is gorgeous (although entirely shot in Austria rather than Switzerland) and the beauty of it made watching the movie endurable for me, but I'm very glad I tried it out at Blockbuster first since it's definitely not one I care to own.

Once again I'm left scratching my head as to why the writer and producer thought they could improve on an already near-perfect story.

1 out of 5 stars Heidi.......2007-05-21

We have read the book to our children, and have all listened to it on audio cassette, and love the original story. We also understand that stories have to be changed somewhat to fit time formats, etc. However, the extent to which this movie has been adapted is beyond reason. The somewhat horrifying first scene is a complete Hollywood fabrication, which does nothing but detract from the overall story. Heidi's Grandfather is no longer the grumpy-on-the-outside, but loving-on-the-inside man of the book. Here he is just a mean old man, with no redeeming qualities at all. Heidi's initial life on the mountains, and her subsequent removal to the city are fairly close to the original story - again, except where the Grandfather is involved. However things really start to fall apart about half way through the second act. Pretty much all of the heart-warming third act of the book, where Heidi returns to the mountains she loves, has been lost to idiotic plot twists and ridiculous melodrama. Time after time, as this movie played, we looked at each other in astonishment, wondering what had happened to the story we know and love.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding movie which makes you cry and laugh!.......2007-05-02

I watched this movie last year and it never drepeived my heart until now. It almost made me cry in the end. Jason Robards did an outstanding job as Heidi's grandfather and Noley Thornton's performance was wonderful as Heidi. Lexi Randall must not be missed because her passionate performance touched me so much. I felt quite scared when she suddenly lost her breath the first time by sobbing uncontrollabaly when Heidi told her that she would go home soon. But anyway Klara's illness was never specified. I liked Patricia Neal's and Jane Seymour's perfrmance a lot too. I really am so happy that it came on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars A Lovely and Hearwarming movie suitable for the whole family! .......2007-04-12

I have watched this movie dubbed in sinhalese because it's our language and I'm a Sri Lankan. All the actors and actressers did a wonderful job especially Lexi Randall, Noley Thornton, Jane Seymour and Jason Robards.Out of these people the person whom I like the most is Jason Robards. He is such a lovable person and his performance as the grumpy grandfather was outstanding. I too would like to accept him as my grandfather just as one of the other rewiers had said. The movie goes a bit slower until after Heidi visits Frankfurt. But anyway every bit was so enchanting that I have the desire to watch it again and I will have it bought by my aunt in USA this year.

Adam Sandler takes a shot at critical respectability with Punch-Drunk Love, a movie by director Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia). Sandler plays Barry Egan, a lonely small businessman who calls a phone sex line one night, only to find himself the victim of an extortion scheme the next day--the very same day on which he goes out on a date with the woman who may be the love of his life (the utterly delightful Emily Watson). Barry is a lot like Sandler's popular comic characters--socially maladept, prone to violence, always on the brink of embarrassment--but here Sandler plays it real; the result is both off-putting and sympathetic. Anderson's writing skills, unfortunately, are not as strong as his visual sense. Punch-Drunk Love has many strengths (including great supporting actors Philip Seymour Hoffman and Luis Guzmán), but ultimately fizzles out. --Bret Fetzer

Wow....what a waste of Adam Sandler's considerable talent. As a diehard Sandler fan, I can safely say that when I saw this 'film' I decided it was time to stab my eyes out with a rusty fork. Fortunately, someone nearby took pity on me and turned the DVD player off, sparing me my sanity and my eyesight. Poor Sandler. This must have been a hard blow; while he did great with what he was given for a script, the movie itself packed no PUNCH, blew chunks like a DRUNK, and I would LOVE to ask whoever's idea that was, "Just what in the hell were you thinking?! How am I supposed to get that two wasted hours of my life back?!"

5 out of 5 stars Took Time to Grow on Me...But This is a Great Movie........2007-08-24

Paul Thomas Anderson is like Quentin Tarantino in the way that he's able to design his own world and the characters in it and convince you that this place might actually exist. He's taken us into the world of porn stars and into a town where frogs fall from the sky; Now he takes us into the world of "Punch-Drunk Love" the only Anderson movie I didn't enjoy upon my first viewing. I loved Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, and Magnolia immediately...But when I first saw "Punch-Drunk Love" I turned off my television with so many questions running through my head. Even as I write this, having now seen the film 5 times and loving it,
I still have questions. Anderson's energetic, anxiety-filled, almost ADHD world doesn't seem realistic for a minute. His protagonist Barry Egan (played by Adam Sandler) is either odd, insane, or retarted. Anderson presents us with Barry but makes no judgement about him and leaves it to the audience to decide. Barry obviously has a lot of problems, but whether he's mentally disturbed or mentally challenged is never quite approached. In many moments, I wondered if maybe the events were just occuring in his head. I'll get to that in a moment. The basic plot structure breaks down like this: Barry is a business owner who is enjoying a cup of coffee outside his wherehouse when there is a sudden car wreck and a taxi appears, dropping off a small piano. Barry takes it into the wherehouse and begins working on it. Meanwhile, he finds a marketing campaign with a big marketing error in it, that he begins using to his advantage. After Barry calls a phone-sex line, he finds himself being harrassed by the girl he talked to...At the same time, he meets Lina (Emily Watson), who may be the girl of his dreams. We learn early on that Barry has extreme anger problems. He's got 7 sisters who continually, ceaselessly harrass him. When he goes to a party with all 7 of them present, he ends up kicking in the sliding glass door...Which apparently he already did earlier in life with a hammer, although he frequently claims not to remember although it's obvious he does. That's what makes Sandler's performance so brilliant. He completely buries himself in this character. While Barry has the same violent outburts that we've seen come from Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, and Dave (from Anger Management); This is hardly the same Adam Sandler we've seen since SNL. Just like a person knows when their friend is lying or tired or getting angry, we sense when it's happening to Barry. This has to do with the combination of two things. Sandler's performance and the way Anderson directs the scenes. By the time Barry kicks in that sliding glass door, you're ready to kick in your television set. Anderson is amazingly skilled at creating a feeling of anxiety or anger for his audience. Since his films are either love it or hate it, this talent goes two ways. It either makes you FEEL the anxiety and anger of the character or it makes you act it out. The big question about this film that still plagues me is whether this is all or mostly occuring in Barry's head. The car wreck scene in the beginning looks like a pretty serious wreck, but there's no sounds of anyone reacting and it doesn't seem like anyone points it out later. Later in the film, Barry rips a phone headset out of the base and appears in Utah with the phone still in his hand. Did he run to Utah? And back!!!??? This is not a structured plot at all; Much of it is meant to be taken metaphorically, so maybe what's actually happening and what's not is irrelevant. "Punch-Drunk Love" is a film that has grown on me. I hated it the first time around and love it now. It's a love story/dark comedy that strays far from convention is a brilliant piece of filmmaking.

5 out of 5 stars Different side of Sandler that I like, but others don't.......2007-07-17

This is one of those movies that the actor gets more attention to his casting role then the movie itself. Yes we all should know that when you think of Adam Sandler, you think comedy right away, so maybe that's why so many hardcore "Happy Gilmore" fans didn't "get" this film. They were probably too clouded with how Sandler played his dark, yet quirky characters roll. This movie is certainly not for everyone but I thought it was well written and directed. I admit it was a little slow at the start, but you soon got into the movie and the plot and that's what made it so entertaining to me.

You should watch this movie if: You have an open mind to Sandlers "out of the box" acting past and want to see an unpredictable love story.

You should stay away if: You are looking for the comedian version of Sandler. You won't find it here.

1 out of 5 stars one of the worst movies i've watched.......2007-07-10

i just don't get it. i thought this was terrible. it was boring, uncomprehendable, dull, slow paced. i was wondering if this movie was made as a joke. i watched it for less than 30 mins then left the room (was at a friend's house). adam sandler is not that attractive to look at. maybe if it had a handsome guy or beautiful girl in it i could have watched it more.

2 out of 5 stars Sadistic Sandler...........2007-03-20

This is the only Adam Sandler film I have sat through from beginning to end (I have seen SNL sketches and snippets of his work), and the film is certainly interesting, though it is not as mind blowing as many critics said it was. I always felt there was a sadistic side to Sandler in a lot of his comedy, a love of being cruel and malicious to people. Granted, many comedians are very angry people, but Sandler seems to have a vicious streak in him 3000 miles wide, and this is brought to the fore in Punch Drunk Love. Sandler seems like he could lose it at any moment, with 7 annoying sisters and a horrid job. I think we're supposed to find sympathy for Sandler, but we don't, because he isn't really a nice guy, but a guy who lets people walk all over him, and seems poised to take revenge by going on a shooting spree. The film itself feels disjointed, and as many others have pointed out, one doesn't believe when the Emily Watson character falls in love with Adam's character. She's relatively normal, and he is teetering on complete insanity. If she had been a tad more insane, it may have worked. Sandler's performance, while good, was not Oscar worthy (as critics were screaming "Oscar buzz! Oscar buzz!"). This is an OK film that is really kind of a mess. Sandler gets a point or two for trying something new, but it's still not very good....

5 out of 5 stars Fun intense workout thats over before you know it!!!.......2007-08-06

I bought this workout looking for something to get me past my plateau. I am glad I bought it, because I am finally on my way to losing those last 15 pounds. I already lost 5 pounds in the past 3 three weeks by adding the advanced turbo jam workouts. I didn't buy the first set of turbo jam workouts and when I first viewed this workout I thought oh, my this is too complicated I should have purchased the first set. My friend has the first set so, I borrowed hers to get the moves down ,but found it wasn't much of a help. If you view this workout a couple of times before you do the workout it should help. The more and more I do this workout the moves are easier to pick up. Now that I have almost gotten the routine down it just alot more fun to do. I am glad I didn't give up on this workout!!!! The cues are there if you listen and are focused as you do this workout. Very, very fun intense workout!!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of my absolute favorite Turbo Jam DVD!.......2006-12-12

This is a wonderful high intensity workout. If you haven't tried Turbo Jam, you are in for a real workout treat! Chalene takes what might be boring punch and kick moves and turns them into exciting ab core exercises that really get you motivated and working out! This is one of my favorite workout DVD's in the Turbo collection. She has some wonderful combination moves that are great and get you pumped. I've been doing Turbo Jam for a short while but lost weight and inches (read my review on Turbo Jam Fat Blaster). This is a great workout DVD. The moves are designed to flow with your own natural movement and there is a team member on all the DVD's, Mindy, who always does the modified version for those who need a little boost. For the rest of us, these moves can be pumped higher and hotter to get the best cardio workout. If you don't know about Chalene and her infectious smile and truly inspirational workout spirit, you are missing out on a great thing! This DVD has about six minutes of warm up which starts off hot and moves into the rest of its 48 minutes (total) of hard workout. The end of the DVD has some tubular toning, just a couple of minutes or so. The tube thing is a rubber band with handles to work the deltoids and glutes (butt muscles) to tone. I think it was a way to introduce the tube idea - I'm not so crazy about it. (Producers should let her do what she does best and thats pump, punch, kick and jam). On the other hand, the tubes help you learn balance and coordination which calls for a different use of your muscles.) The DVD ends with about a three minute stretching routine. I do the tube stuff at the end as part of a cool down anyway. My only personal bias is that I wish they would have lengthened the cardio by a few minutes and dumped the tubular stuff. You will however get your total cardio workout and will feel it at the end. It's a great routine by design, it is a total workout and one of my absolute best in my collection. The DVD is about 50 minutes long in total workout time.

4 out of 5 stars Alot Of Fun.......2006-12-02

I exercise alot, every day for at least an hour. Living in New England makes it difficult to do outside activities with any sense of regularity. So I supplement my workouts with dvds and videos. I love Tae Bo kickboxing. And after I saw an infomercial on Turbo Jam I decided to try Chalene Johnson. So I bought Punch Kick and Jam online. And I'm very happy that I did. After having done Tae Bo for a good number of years I'm familiar with the moves, so it only took a couple of tries before I was in the groove with Chalene. This is pretty high energy workout. It's 50 minutes long with about 5 minutes of warming up and then right into the workout. I like that each segment is timed. Chalene has a great attitude and she's fun. Just make sure that you really listen to her for your cues cause she doesn't waste any time. But the cues ARE there. My favorite things about this dvd is that it makes for a fun sweatfest and it's really not your average aerobic workout. I highly recommend it and I will definitely buy more Turbo Jam dvds.

4 out of 5 stars Absorbing and Poignant Australian Movie.......2007-05-15

First and foremost, "We of the Never Never" must be counted as a visually beautiful film, a triumph of cinematography which reveals the Australian outback in all its splendor. Gary Hansen won a well deserved award for the cinematography.

The story (adapted from a true account by "Mrs. Aeneas Gunn") follows an Australian pioneer bride with a budding feminist sensibility as she learns to live in the Aussie wilderness, at the cattle station run by her new husband.

Jeannie Gunn (played by Angela Punch McGregor) is a woman of determination. She refuses to accept the "code of stoic suffering" embraced by the cattle ranchers, nor will she abide their condescension toward the Aboriginal people, who are treated as slaves.

Beyond the highlighted social issues, "We of the Never Never" is a film that becomes powerful in its unsentimental portrayal of death. Death treats the lowly and the privileged equally, and the death scenes in this movie are utterly, tragically believeable. The culminating scene between Jeannie and her husband is very touching. Arthur Dignam, who plays the husband, gives a nuanced performance, the best performance in the film.

As a bonus, there is a beguiling musical score by Peter Best, which features strings, cor anglais, and digeridoo.

CAUTIONARY NOTE: Heavy Australian accents should have dictated that this dvd come equipped with subtitles. It does not, and for that omission I deduct one star.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best films ever made...........2007-03-15

This is one of the most remarkable films ever made. The casting - the story - the cinematography - an all round excellent film. The soundtrack adds a lot to the emotion and excitement of the story line. I would recommend this film to anyone. It has depth of meaning. A very worthwhile film. I am so grateful that is is now available in Region 1. It has been a long time coming and well worth the wait. Buy it sight unseen and you will never regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Absorbing historical movie .......2004-12-31

This is based on a memoir by the pioneer Australian woman ,Aeneas Gunn about her years on a cattle station in the Australian outback around the turn of the last century and is beautiful looking movie .Strikingly shot and with a haunting score by Peter Best it is also wonderfully well acted by a non -stellar cast of Australian performers .
It is an absorbing study of life on the frontier which while slow moving is involving throughout not least for its distinctly Australian feel
It is a movie I unreservedly recommend for its insights into a distant world remote in both place and time

4 out of 5 stars Subtle, but involving.......2002-07-30

I saw this film many years ago and it was unforgettable. I re-watched it recently and I was not disappointed. One of the most realistic views of Australian history and the impact of the white settlers on the Aboriginal culture.

What's wonderful is that there is no real "villain" here -- the characters are subtle (something American filmmakers should learn) and interesting. The ending is a bit flat but that may be merely a typical American need for a big finale. Don't let it stop you from watching this film.

But whatever you do -- DO NOT READ THE BLURB ON THE BACK! It gives away the entire story (including the ending).

5 out of 5 stars An Australian Classic.......2000-07-12

Back in the 70's, the Australian Government generously funded the arts and the film industry, and this film is one of the greats from that period -considered to be the "golden age" of australian filmaking.

If you are interested in knowing more about australian history, and the tragic consequences of white settlement for the aboriginal people, this is a good film to start with.

The moral complexities of the tragedy are reminicent of the recent film "dead heart". I would also recommend the film "walkabout".

There is something about the way the lead aboriginal character holds a certain kind of quiet dignity that is heartbreaking to watch. I do not agree with leonard maltin that this film fails to pack a dramatic punch. This is a beautiful and emotional film, and i would recommend it as part of any film studies course that is dealing with the australian genre.

This is really a review of the film, since I saw it on satellite and can't comment on the DVD's quality or extras, but I feel that this gem is worth your attention since it was not distributed very widely or very well.

It is a film whose themes on the surface (incestual longings, teen hostility, failed relationships, topless women boxers being exploited) might seem off-putting or even sensationalist, but the film, under a sure director and his cast, manages to spin this stuff into real acting gold by drawing out motivations and actions in the characters and letting them unfold gradually rather than telegraphing all its punches.

The DVD release of Newsfront is cause for celebration, as it finally brings one of Australia's most celebrated films to a worldwide audience. The film earned high praise on the festival circuit, and was hailed by many influential critics as one of the best films of 1978, but it remained largely unseen in the U.S. and Europe, even as the Australian film renaissance began to attract international acclaim. With its clever combination of actual newsreel footage and a quintessentially Australian social drama, Newsfront is a valentine to a passing era, spanning the years 1948-58 when newsreel cameramen were chroniclers of truth Down Under, capturing personal interest stories, natural disasters, political rallies, sports events, and other notable occasions for moviegoers in Australia's pre-television era. Len McGuire (Bill Hunter) and his brother Frank (Gerard Kennedy) are cameramen for competing newsreel companies, CineTone and Newsco, and their professional exploits (both mundane and exciting) are played against a domestic backdrop of complex relationships, such as Len's strained and sexless Catholic marriage, or the erratic affair between Frank's neglected girlfriend Amy (Wendy Hughes) and the politically opinionated editor Geoff (Bryan Brown).

As Australia undergoes a series of social and political upheavals and historic events--including a spectacular re-creation of the devastating Maitland flood of 1955--the newsreel creators face the increasingly difficult challenge of defending their own political and ethical boundaries, and Newsfront achieves unexpected depths of incident and character, both sobering and humorous. As directed by Phillip Noyce (who later enjoyed great success with Dead Calm, Patriot Games, and Rabbit Proof Fence), the film brilliantly matches form to content, changing its visual style and soundtrack to reflect the evolution of filmmaking that occurred during the time-frame of the drama (for example, transitioning from black-and-white to color and adapting its cinematography to approximate subtle advancements in filmmaking technique). The efforts of Noyce and his collaborators paid off handsomely: Newsfront won nearly every major Australian film award, and its remarkable production history is fully explored in an exceptional DVD commentary by virtually every member of the film's primary cast and crew. Other DVD extras include "The Last Newsreel" (a featurette about preservation and restoration of Australian newsreels) and extensive DVD-ROM study materials including an in-depth production history, a generous archive of reviews, and a detailed account of Newsfront's DVD restoration. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars The best Australian film?.......2005-11-12

The late 1970s-early 1980s was a time of frenetic activity in the Australian movie industry, one which saw the production of films such as "Picnic at Hanging Rock", "My Brilliant Career", "Gallipoli" and "Breaker Morant". However even against such excellent company "Newsfront" stands out as the finest film of its time, and possibly the best Australian film yet made.

Most Australian films of that time, even the very best, tended to exhibit a slightly self-conscious "Australianness". It was historically a time when Australians rediscovered their "roots" and were keen to present their culture to the world. Consequently many of these films can look a little quaint or provincial, for all their undoubted quality. "Newsfront", in contrast, had a storyline which, whilst it was thoroughly Australian in context, was completely accessible to a woldwide audience.

It also boasted a cast which included some of the best local actors ever to grace the screen, a very strong script, and high production values. The combination of historic newsreel footage studio shots and location photography was perfectly handled, and the score was inspired.

One of the most interesting facets is the way in which the style of cinematography, music and dialogue production change during the course of the film. Just as the story covers a period of great technical change, the film itself evolves during its 110 minutes from shaky black and white handheld shots with an accompanying post war soundtrack to slick colour with a fine orchestral soundtrack. This is not, however just an obvious gimmick - it is a very gradual and subtle change, which may not even be consciously noticed on the first viewing.

A wonderful and rewarding film which is as fresh now as it was on its release in 1978.

5 out of 5 stars When the world was young.......2005-11-07

While Newsfront is not a comedy, it is a delight. The cast is fabulous and leave the audience wishing they were friends with the people portrayed.

The film tells a story about people who made newsreels in 1950s Australia. Today, newsreels are simply gone, passing from tremendous importance to obscurity almost overnight, driven there by television, that arrived in Australia in 1956.

If you have never seen Newsfront, then you are in for a treat. If you have, then you don't need a review to tell you to see it again. Since Newsfront is not well known, it would make a nice gift for a friend who enjoys a good movie.

"When the world was young" is the subtitle that was on the 1984 laser disc release of Newsfront.
