It has not taken long for Without a Trace to emerge from the shadows of CSI and become a ratings force in its own right. Jerry Bruckheimer produced both series, and both feature the-face-is-familiar character actors with extensive and diverse resumes who have been catapulted to primetime stardom. Jack Malone, head of a crack FBI missing persons unit, is the Australian-born Anthony LaPaglia's breakout role after years of portraying enough Italian mobsters and criminals to populate a season of The Sopranos. LaPaglia was a surprise Golden Globe Award-winner for this inaugural season. Without a Trace is instantly arresting. "The clock is ticking" in each episode, as Malone and company race against time to find a missing person. "After 48 hours," Malone explains to the rookie member of the team in the series pilot, "they're gone." To solve each baffling case, Malone and fellow agents Samantha Spade (Poppy Montgomery), Vivian Johnson (Marianne Jean-Baptiste of Secrets and Lies), Danny Taylor (Enrique Murciano), and new guy Martin Fitzgerald (Eric Close), must work from the inside out. "Once we find out who she is," Malone says of one victim, "odds are we'll find out where she is."

Among the inaugural season's most wrenching episodes are "Between the Cracks" and "Hang On to Me," both featuring Charles Dutton in his Emmy Award-winning performance as a father whose son has been missing for five years. The powerful season finale, "Fallout," presented in this four-disc set in a "creator's cut," concerns a man who lost his wife in the 9/11 attacks. The riveting episodes mostly stand alone, but some cases do return to haunt Malone, as witness "In Extremis," a case that ends tragically and leads to an internal investigation that threatens to subvert the close-knit unit in the episode. "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been?" Sharp writing, authentic procedurals, taut direction, and effective use of music make Without a Trace a series worth finding on DVD. --Donald Liebenson

3 out of 5 stars I guess you either like it or you don't........2007-09-10

I'm one of those people who likes to buy tv on dvd movies without having watched the show on television before buying it. I like to watch the show on my own time, sometimes one episode a week, sometimes 3 episodes a day. When I was looking for a new series to watch, I settled on Without a Trace because I'm going to school to study some form of criminology. After watching just a couple of episodes, I felt slightly disappointed.

Obviously, every person has different interests. Having only watched clips of Without a Trace while flipping through the channels, I wasn't sure whether or not I'd completely like the show but the topics interested me. TV shows are much like movies. You have to have a beginning, middle, climax, and an ending. Without these things, you don't have a good movie, or a good show in this case. This review is not meant to critique the show, rather I'm reviewing this particular season as well as the actual dvd (bonuses, etc.).

But let's talk about the positives first. First, the main characters seem to be pretty likeable. And of course you need to have likeable characters since they're considered to be the "good guys". The show revolves around a group (the "good guys") who are part of the FBI's missing persons unit. In each episode, the group must find a missing person, each with different circumstances, and different surprises. One thing I'd like to point out is that the endings are far from predictable. I like that each episode and each case is completely different with completely different characters and completely different endings.

In terms of the actual dvd, there are a ton of great bonuses and behind the scenes footage to keep any Without a Trace fan content. Some episodes also have deleted scenes, most aren't anything new and interesting, but some would have changed the episode if they weren't deleted.

And now for the negatives. The one huge negative that turned me off from the show is something that (according to some of the reviews on Amazon) some people like about the show. As I said above, the endings are far from predictable. And when I say far, I do mean FAR. It's to the point where I was thinking "where did THAT come from?". I don't want to spoil anything so I'll come up with my own example. Say a woman is missing and her husband is the prime suspect. Without a Trace will obviously not allow the husband to be the suspect but they will have the husband's uncle's friend's girlfriend be the suspect. And the worst part is the husband's uncle's friend's girlfriend will not be mentioned even once throughout the show until she is found to be the suspect. Another thing that annoyed me a bit is a lack of additional storylines. Yes, there are a couple of little side storylines but they're not completely developed and throughout the whole season, I was craving SOMETHING to break up the traditional storyline.

As far as the actual dvd, the episodes are printed on both sides of each disk. And it's hard to figure out which side you've watched already since the disks contain no images to differentiate between them. Also, if you're not very careful, double sided disks can scratch easily (and in my case, I only watched each disk once and I managed to scratch a couple disks just by placing them on top of the table).

Look, if you're a fan of the show, my review isn't going to influence you to not buy it, but for those who, like me, enjoy buying tv on dvd movies without having watched the show on television, keep in mind the negatives I pointed out. It's not a bad show but I certainly will not buy season two.

5 out of 5 stars The best out of all those crime/missing persons/CSI themed shows.......2007-05-26

Anthony LaPaglia, who plays serious yet caring Agent Jack Malone, is easily one of the most underrated actors on television today. He is just superb in this series. His scenes in this season's episode "Suspect" with Conor O'Farrell, who played dean Graham Spaulding, left me with chills. There are so many great moments and episodes in season one of Without a Trace.

The finale is extremely suspenseful, but the episode "Suspect" has stuck with me all these years. It's just done so well, especially afterwards when Jack Malone has to vomit. It's just haunting and shocking all at the same time - the music, the lighting, the rain going on in the background, basically just everything leaves you cold but at the same time completely in awe of this scene. Yes, I am a tad in love with Anthony LaPaglia due to his acting in this series. Can't ya tell? ;)

The supporting cast is also really great. All the characters are very interesting and the mysteries always have you guessing.

I like this show because it focuses more on the actual mysteries, instead of who's sleeping with whom. That goes on in this series, but the actual missing children/people take precedent over any intimate relationship plot line.

4 out of 5 stars Without a trace Season One.......2007-05-15

I've only gotten through the first disk so far. There was one spot that "stuck" and I had to just go to the next scene. Other than that, it's great!! I love the series.

5 out of 5 stars Gritty, Believable Drama of the First Order.......2007-02-25

Without a Trace is gritty, realistic (it profits from the extensive input of a former FBI agent), the personal lives of the five main agents, never in the foreground, but always running through the series like a red thread, make Jack Malone and his crew human and believable, and yes, invariably one of the agents will come into the scene and say "I have a lead on the car (or phone number). I'm going to check it out." That's real life in a unit like the Missing Persons Bureau of the FBI, a lot of it is routine and repetitive stuff. The scripts are taught and fast-moving (the extra scenes you get on the DVD release of The Complete First Season show how every episode is honed down to a fine edge, eliminating everything that slows down the plots. The acting is flawless, these are five different people with different profiles and characters, and I personally can believe every one of them. This is a first-rate series, action-packed yet focusing on the human beings and the plight they are in, riveting and quite addictive.

1 out of 5 stars What do people see in this show?.......2007-01-26

I purchased season 1 and thought it was so-so but then as I started watching repeats of seasons 1 and 2, it dawned on me that this was one terrible show. I think the acting is poor (but that could be the fault of the scripts and/or the directors). Speaking of scripts, could the dialogue and scenes be any weaker? Invariably, on each show one of the agents will come into the scene and say "I have a lead on the car (or phone number). I'm going to check it out." Exit scene.

I just can't believe that real FBI agents act like this quintet. LaPaglia's hair is long, then regulation, then long, then . . .well you get the idea. If there is an actress more sorry than Marianne Jean-Baptiste in a lead role, I have yet to meet her. Also, why are these two so argumentative with the relatives or friends of the missing person. I'm thinking especially of the father of the autistic boy who went missing in a museum. And if it is a husband or wife who went missing, then invariably the question is "Was he (she) having an affair?" and "Are you having an affair?"

Poppy Montgomery, an FBI agent? Come on. First, she has an affair with her supervisor (LaPaglia). Then she jumps into bed with one of her co-workers (Eric Close). Not in any FBI that I know.

At least Close and Enrique Murciano look and act like agents (and so does Montgomery, when she is out of bed) but they are handicapped by weak scripts and direction.

There are better series out there. Buy those. Don't buy "Without A Trace."

"You can't save everyone, Jack," a child molester taunts FBI Agent Jack Malone before hurling himself out a window. But the tireless efforts of Malone (Anthony LaPaglia in his Golden Globe-winning role) and the members of the elite Missing Persons Squad to do just that are what make Without a Trace so compelling. Each episode is a race against time to find a person who has mysteriously vanished (their slow fade from the screen has lost none of its unsettling power). In some of this sophomore season's most gripping cases, people and events are not what they seem. In "Confidence," the task force discovers that a missing wealthy socialite has a seriously shady past and keeps "bad company." The past haunts the present in "Risen," in which Vivian (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) gets a new lead on a four-year-old case (Kirstie Alley is excellent as the missing girl's distraught mother), and in "Copycat," a sociopath with a grudge against Jack (see "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been" from the first season) is involved in a disappearance with disturbing similarities to a 12-year-old case.

The procedural aspect of Without a Trace is fascinating as Jack and company employ advanced profiling techniques in their investigations. Over the course of the season, episodes also deftly flesh out the characters. Samantha (Poppy Montgomery) struggles with the psychological repercussions of being shot in the season 1 cliffhanger. Taylor (Enrique Murciano) is revealed to have a brother who is in jail. Samantha, who had an affair with Jack, is drawn to Martin (Eric Close). Jack learns that his father (Martin Landau in an Emmy Award-winning performance) has Alzheimer's. He also weighs a move to Chicago to save his rocky marriage. Fulfilling the promise of the auspicious first season, Without a Trace has established itself as among the best-written and -acted (not for nothing did the series earn a Best Casting for TV award from the Casting Society of America) hours on television. And without commercials to break the tension, it's an even more intense experience on DVD. --Donald Liebenson

WITHOUT A TRACE IS MY FAVORITE TELEVISION SERIES, IT IS GOOD DRAMA, BUT NOT EVERYONE ENDS UP DEAD AT THE ENDING. I CAN NOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT SEASON TO COME OUT ON DVD.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars. Not as captivating as season one, but still enjoyable........2007-06-13

I don't know if my expectations were set too high for the second season of this series due to the fact that I loved the first season, or if it just wasn't done as well as the first. Maybe a sophomore slump took place?

Not to say that it's boring- believe me it's not boring at all, it makes really great television. It's just that some elements that made season one special were missing from the second season in my opinion.

The missing person's storylines grew darker in this season and there is a lot more about the characters personal lives and quirks. These are somewhat enjoyable add-ons to the second season, but at some points the writers weren't bit hard enough by the "follow through" bug. Some of the mysteries are left unanswered or just left for you to assume your own conclusions, which is annoying because these aren't about the main characters - but about the missing people. I thought these stories might be picked up in the later episodes (like season one did), but I was mistaken and left somewhat annoyed and wondering what happened to certain missing person's.

The acting is still great; the stories are still interesting, and the show as a whole is the best missing person's/CSI/etc themed show out there in my mind.

4 out of 5 stars Without a Trace-Second Season.......2007-05-23

I have enjoyed this show since its debut and hope they will put out all seasons on DVD. Strong writing and excellent cast that balances character development with intrigueing stories and manages not to go down the slippery path to becoming another prime time soap opera. There is a good reason that it has had strong and respectable ratings for several seasons.

5 out of 5 stars dvd.......2007-05-16

I really like this television show. I hope you will have Season 3 in the near future. My order was sent out in a timely manner.

This is every parent's nightmare: Your kid goes off to school one morning--and never comes back. Based on the case of young New Yorker Etan Patz, who disappeared in the early 1980s, this film casts Kate Nelligan as the distraught mother who lashes out at the police (in the person of a relentless detective played by Judd Hirsch), who make her and her husband suspects, even as she hounds them to find her child and drives away her husband (David Dukes) and friends (including Stockard Channing) with her intensity and single-mindedness. The first film by producer Stanley Jaffe, all of the goodwill he earns two-thirds of the way through is squandered on a Hollywood ending that doesn't square with the real case: Etan Patz was never found. --Marshall Fine

Description

One morning, six-year-old Alex Selky got dressed, waved goodbye to his mother and set off for school. Somewhere along the short two-block walk, he disappeared. Now for his mom Susan (Oscar®-nominee Kate Nelligan of THE PRINCE OF TIDES - 1992 in a performance The Los Angeles Times hails as "superb"), life becomes a sudden nightmare of police and reporters, panic and suspicion, despair and fear. But as the hours become days and months, can Susan convince her friends, her estranged ex-husband (David Dukes), the media, and the overworked detective in charge of the case (Oscar®-nominee Judd Hirsch of ORDINARY PEOPLE - 1981, and A BEAUTIFUL MIND) that a mother's hope must somehow survive? Stockard Channing of THE WEST WING co-stars in this stunning drama about a woman who refuses to give up her fight to find the truth - no matter how heartbreaking - behind how her only child could vanish WITHOUT A TRACE.

I have had this movie on video for several years - I love it!. I lent it out and lost track of it. I ordered the DVD and am very satisfied with ease of ordering. the quality of the product, and the delivery process. I am a repeat customer. Thank you!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-05-07

I first saw this movie years ago, and was thrilled to find it again. There is so little I can say that will not give away the plot, but this is Kate Nelligan at her absolute best.

5 out of 5 stars Every Time.......2007-03-12

Still cry EVERY time that I watch this film. As a child myself in the 80s and as an adult today all I need are the first few notes of the "Bringing Him Home" music and I start to sob. It's nice to watch a film that I describe as "bare bones" acting and to be as moved as you are watching this film. Too bad there aren't more films like this today!

4 out of 5 stars Moving.......2007-01-09

I originally watched this movie on television and found it to be so moving and such a model for programming with a positive outcome that I wanted to purchase it. Kate Nelligan gave a terrific performance and I had never before seen Judd Hirsch in a serious, dramatic role. I enjoyed both.

5 out of 5 stars A Great 80's Movie.......2007-01-09

Excellent acting and a great ending that will bring tears to your eyes every time you watch it. One of my favorite oldies.

4 out of 5 stars "This Stuff Only Happens On the News".......2005-10-06

Jack and Elizabeth live the perfect suburban life with their 13 year-old daughter Cathy and their two young sons. One day Elizabeth comes home to pick Cathy up for soccer practice, and she is nowhere to be found. All the things we have seen repeatedly on the news in these cases takes place; the neighbors helping to search the surrounding area, the mother's plea to the media, the police doing their best, and coming up with nothing. What "Vanished Without a Trace" realistically depicts is how this horrifying situation impacts the family, with the 2 little brothers confused and missing their sister, and the terrible stress it places on the marriage. Imagined guilt also plays into the scenario, because Steve had a fight with Cathy over the clothes and makeup she was wearing a few hours before she went missing, and is also looked upon as a suspect by the police.

Shelly Long does well as the desperate Elizabeth, and William R. Moses is fine as Jack, with Cathy played by Julie Berman. Also good in the cast are Jennifer Jostyn and Joshua Peace, as close neighbors and friends Karen and Scott, and Nigel Bennett as Detective Davis. The direction by Douglas Barr keeps the feel of the domestic drama plot authentic, and the film is quite well paced, with no scenes that lag or seem out of place. Filmed on a low budget, "Vanished Without a Trace" is one of those TV films that make the most of every dollar spent, and is more entertaining than some of the million $ big screen offerings from Hollywood. Total running time is 85

Aurelia is a single mother who ditches her factory job and drug-dealing boyfriend, and Ana is a smooth-talking smuggler of a fake Mayan artifacts fleeing a corrupt cop. When they cross paths at a truck stop in the dusty Mexican bordertown of Ciudad Juarez, the two decide to travel together to the Yucatan in search of freedom and friendship. Winner of the Latin American Cinema Award at the 2001 Sundance Film Festivial. This is a smartly-written and visually-sumptuous road movie about two women on the run. Written and directed by Maria Novaro (Danzon, The Garden of Eden). A hit at the 2002 San Diego Latino Film Festival!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An excellent film for students of Spanish.......2006-10-09

Other reviewers have sketched the plot, and this looks at the broader aspects of the film.

Although it's a road-adventure story, the heart of the film is the relationship between the two women. Most of the weight of the film rests on the lead actresses, and their ability to keep the viewer interested in them and their perils. Tiare Scanda and Aitana Sanchez-Gijon both give marvelous performances and are completely convincing in their roles.

For those learning Spanish, the DVD has English and Spanish subtitles, and the Spanish subtitles are an accurate transcription of the words spoken. If you can't follow the dialogue, you can peek at the subtitles to learn what the words are. That's a big help in picking them out and becoming accustomed to how they sound in normal speech.

Some of the lines are delivered rapidly and none too clearly, which is normal in real-word speech. Compared to the other Spanish DVDs in my collection, though, this one is quite easy to understand. Some Mexican slang is used, but not much. The film is aimed at an international audience and sticks closely to standard Spanish.

Most of the characters speak with a Mexican accent and vocabulary, but according to the story, Ana was raised and educated in Spain. She has a pronounced accent of Castille, which the Mexicans find quite amusing. Mendizabel and Aurelia both poke fun at her accent, and the look on Ana's face is priceless. She has heard it all before, and is mighty weary of it.

3 out of 5 stars "Telmita y Luisita".......2005-12-02

When first released, Maria Novaro's film was understandably poked fun as "Telmita y Luisita" by the press. To be fair, there is more to the movie than what that remark suggests, and there lie its virtues and defects. Like Novaro's "The Garden of Eden" (also on DVD), the film tries to link Mexican gender and politics. In "Sin dejar huella", Novaro tackles drug-dealing and the rape and disappearance of factory workers in Mexican border towns, by weaving together the stories of two very different women: a sophisticated art smuggler and an uneducated factory worker (played by two excellent and attractive actresses, Spanish Aitana Sanchez-Gijon & Mexican Tiare Scanda). The leads are lovely to look at, the film has a great soundtrack, and there are gorgeous shots of Mexican landscapes, but by the time the two women start their cross-country journey running away from drug dealers, the film degenerates into a conventional road movie that never really pays off in its premise. It's no "Thelma & Louise" or "Y tu mama tambien", but still, its decent enough for a rental.

5 out of 5 stars excelente.......2005-01-10

I bought this movie not knowing what to expect from it, but simply wanting to gear up for taking spanish next semester..... I ended up loving this movie, love love love. Tiaré Scanda and Aitana Sánches-Gijón are both excellent actresses, and this is the kind of script that really needs great actresses to carry it, since the focus is almost completely on them. It's a simple film, but I don't mean "simple" in a bad way. It lets the audience into the psychology of the characters without being too dark or dramatic. The scenery is beautiful, and the soundtrack is great. I highly reccomend it!

3 out of 5 stars Mexican road trip film.......2004-06-07

"Without a Trace" from Mexican director, Maria Navaro, is a road trip film, but the difference here is that the story centres (as one would expect with Navaro) on women. Ana/Marilu (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon) is intelligent, educated and has some nefarious doings with fake Mayan art. A border patrol officer is more than a little interested in Ana, and that interest is personal. He drags her into his office for questioning, and lets her leave after he's finished drooling on her. The other main character, Aurelia, (Tiare Scanda) is a single mother of two. Aurelia works in a sweatshop in Ciudad Juarez where more than 250 murders of women remain unsolved. Her narcotics-dealing beau makes the mistake of leaving a stash at her place. She cashes in this little nest egg, and hits the road with the proceeds. Ana heads back to her fake Mayan art counterfeit centre, and Aurelia heads for Cancun where she hopes to get a job in a hotel. The two women meet in a roadside cafe, and a relationship begins as they decide to travel together.

The relationship between the two women is the great interest here. They are two different types--Ana is constantly mis-identified as Spanish, and she's quick to correct everyone that she was born in Mexico but educated in Spain. Ana receives both deference for her Spanish looks and derision from others who tend to see her as an outsider. Aurelia is tough and determined, and yet Ana is beyond her experience. The two women need each other, and they silently accept that fact--along with the idea that it's better not to travel alone (look what happens to women in Juarez, for example). As the two women travel together, Aurelia sees new country for the first time, and she marvels at the sumptuousness of it all. To Ana, it's nothing new. The film starts off very strongly, and degenerates into standard fare as the two women travel towards Cancun and are pursued by the annoying men in their lives.

"Without a Trace" is a visually stunning film and worth watching if you're interested in Mexican cinema. The male roles are--dare I say it--token stereotypical types. There is nothing terribly new here, and the ending is disappointing. That said, I have to add that Mexican cinema is enjoying an energetic renaissance, and I'm reaping the benefits as often as I can. Flawed though this film may be, it still beats most of the pap churned out from Hollywood. Director, Navaro is to be commended for the making of "Without a Trace" for the film brings attention to the huge numbers of women raped, mutilated and tortured in Cuidad Juarez. The victims are mainly young sweatshop workers who disappear forever from their families--a fate Aurelia wishes to escape--displacedhuman

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Road Movie!.......2004-05-31

Ana, an educated art historian, and Aurelia, lone mother of two, are two women in trouble, one with the law and the other with drug trafficking thugs. Their paths cross as Ana asks if she can get a ride with Aurelia to Cancun as both attempt to escape their pasts. This is in the backdrop of a vicious serial killer that has murdered over 250 women and haunts all women in Mexico. Without a Trace is a wonderful road movie about the two women as they try to change their lives on their own in the shadow of a patriarchal society. Novaro creates a motherly environment as mother Aurelia breast feeds and nurtures her little baby, but also a tough femme fatale atmosphere with the women drinking beer in different bars. These two aspects of the women are brought to the screen with strong drama and comedy as the women venture for something better. In the end, Novaro creates a wonderful cinematic experience that both entertains and enlightens the audience.

Description

For the student, it's a chance to hear the contrasting accents side-by-side.

This has become one of my favorite films in any language, and I highly recommend it.
