In this astonishing program are ALL the resources you will ever need to understand and live The Secret. For the first time in history, the world's leading scientists, authors, and philosophers will reveal The Secret that utterly transformed the lives of every person who ever knew it... Plato, Newton, Carnegie, Beethoven, Shakespeare, Einstein. Now YOU will know The Secret. And it can change your life forever.

Amazon.com

Not really a movie or documentary, The Secret is more of a video seminar, a presentation featuring a series of authors, philosophers, doctors, quantum physicists, entrepreneurs, and spiritual practitioners expounding on the powers of The Secret (probably the most well-known of the presenters is Jack Canfield, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul and The Success Principles). What is The Secret, exactly? "That principle can be summed up in three simple words: thoughts become things," proclaims writer Mike Dooley, author of Notes from the Universe. Put it another way, it's The Power of Positive Thinking and how it can be applied to attracting more money, better health, and relationships; in short, happiness. (There is a rundown of topics on the DVD Chapters menu).

Most of the material here is given in a straightforward manner, with the presenters simply talking into the camera to address the audience directly, which is good because it avoids the trap of pretense. On the other hand, the quick edits between presenters (would it hurt to let them say more than one sentence at a time?) don't help because it reduces many of their points to palatable sound bites and aphorisms. To many viewers, this may make the program come across as a series of nice ideas not rooted in reality. Plus it's somewhat spurious to claim that The Secret was well understood and practiced by specific individuals like Plato or Shakespeare (it's well known that some of the historical figures noted didn't exactly live happy or even prosperous lives, despite their achievements). But still, the primary message is one of positivity and hope for everyone. So what to make of it? In the end, programs like this generally find an audience that is open to the message, and many will probably find it to be a source of inspiration. Others will approach it with a good deal of skepticism or dismiss it as another way of marketing happiness the masses. It simply won't resonate with everyone, but if it resonates with you, you're likely to enjoy it and get a lot out of it. Those looking for more on The Secret might want to check out the companion book by Rhonda Byrne. --Daniel Vancini

5 out of 5 stars The Secret: Movie synopsis and opinion.......2007-09-14

The Secret (Extended Edition)
The Power of Your Subconscious Mind

Basically it breaks down like this "Like attracts Like". You attract to you what you put out type thing. This movie tries to explain how to use this on a conscious level for achieving what you want in your life instead of attracting what you don't. I love this movie, I love the idea behind this movie. I find it very empowering.

Yes, the movie does emphasize a bit on wealth and gain, however it also speaks of using it (the secret) in Health and Relationships, how it can apply to anything and anyone. I love that idea, maybe the people just need a little faith in something other than themselves. I think of this movie as a gift for the masses, just think it we could all get ourselves together long enough to do something on a deeper level. Also check out "The Power of the Subconscious Mind by John Murphy", it's been around since the 60's. Good luck and keep an open mind.

5 out of 5 stars A good first step........2007-09-14

I hope this movie inspires and uplifts all who watch it.

Few would deny that if you are born into a rich family, one which values financial success, and you are taught to succeed; then you will probably be successful. Being positive will come naturally to you. If on the other hand, you are born into a poor family, one which struggles to survive, and you are taught to struggle; then you will probably not be successful. Being negative will come naturally to you.

Of course, there are exceptions. There are those who succeed despite all obstacles of birth and circumstance. We read about them. We admire them. And it is to those many individuals desiring to be exceptions that "The Secret" aims. And there is no doubt in my mind that positive thinking is a requirement of success.

And there's nothing wrong with being successful. There was a comedian once who said, more or less, "I've been rich, and I've been poor, and believe you me rich is better." I think it was Joe E. Brown who said that, and I agree with him. While I have never been rich, I have been poor. And I did not like it. Making ends meet took all my time. I was too tired to meditate, too tired to read nourishing books, and too tired to spend time with those I loved. But I was not too tired to worry.

Nor is there anything wrong with being positive, setting intentions, and manifesting what you think you want. That is much better than being negative, not setting intentions, and manifesting what you think you do not want.

For those who struggle to send children to college, pay mortgages, and take care of aging parents; this will be an uplifting movie. Life can be hard, and people need hope. But I also imagine that most of those who love the message in "The Secret" know that there is more to life than living the "good" life. And I am sure the contributors to this DVD would agree.

As for me, the good that I seek beyond the "good" life is a state of inner stillness. And, as much as I value abundance and the teachings around it, I cannot manifest this inner state through positive thinking. It is through letting go of my thoughts that I enter into stillness.

We all know that the Buddha advocated the middle path. He neither distained nor desired the riches of this world. He saw that the poor struggled to get money, and the rich struggled to keep money. Therefore he talked about living in balance, first with oneself and then with ones neighbors. To me his words are as wise today as when he first spoke them. And perhaps the real secret is to set our intentions to live in harmony with each other.

Thank you, John C. Conley, author of "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening."

5 out of 5 stars Smallville - all are superb.......2007-09-16

Although I haven't viewed season 6 on DVD yet, I did watch the season on television, so it has to be just as excellent. I own all seasons of Smallville and they are all superb! Smallville is a GEM of a show.

Smallville, Prison Break, CBS's Cold Case with Danny Pino and Kathryn Morris and Supernatural are all excellent shows with extremely talented actors and actresses.

3 out of 5 stars Smallville Season 6.......2007-09-15

I think that Clark and Lois should have more on an intertwining story line. If falling in love is where it is going to eventually lead to, then lets get to it already. Lana is played out. I don't understand why they want the audience to invest hope in a relationship that we know is not going to come happen, well that is assuming the shows intention is to follow the real superman saga. Also Tom Welling is the hottest thing on the planet earth!!!Smallville - The Complete Sixth Season

1 out of 5 stars DC Comics Characters look terrible in Live Action.......2007-09-15

This was the most awful apperance of superheroes in live action ever. Never mind the casting. They all acted wooden and made the kind of acting you see on AS THE WORLD TURNS look like fine art. Then there was the outfits, on the comics page it's colored cartoon underwear, on this show, I will not dignify it with comment, but to say that it's laughable would be too kind.

I knew that this show was a joke, but now I am more convinced then ever that this show, as well as the CW network, DC Comics, Warner Brothers and everyone who work there are among the most untalented fools in Hollywood.

5 out of 5 stars Smallville is still the best........2007-09-11

I just discovered this series last year and now it's probably my favorite show on T.V. When a co-worker told me it was his only "can't miss" show I rented Season One. I was totally hooked and now OWN every season.

Since I watched the whole series in order, the character/plot progression has been fascinating. The relationships and character development really MAKE the show.

Lex and his slow slide to the dark side is more interesting because we see how it happens... how twisted and tragic his upbringing was. Clark's rich relationship with his parents is such a great contrast to Lex and Lionel, (I really missed Johnathan) and his growth toward his "destiny" has been so real (relatable even) and compelling.

Smallville has put it's own unique spin on Clark Kent/Superman and that's ok... In fact, it's been great. It seems like some people are so obsessed with the "Superman myth" they know, that they can't let go and enjoy... Too bad.

It's been a great ride and I want to see where THIS story goes. Clark and Lana have so much on screen chemistry that I'm halfway expecting my T.V. to start smoking every time they're in the same room! Wanting to see them get together STILL keeps me watching. At this point, it's going to be a tragedy if they DON'T wind up together... and knowing the way that Superman's story is "supposed" to go... It's really TOO BAD.

Chloe is a great character that is also unique to Smallville and I love her as Clark's "sidekick" and hope she continues to develop. Lois... is an interesting character too, but as Superman's future soul-mate, she's weak. Clark's relationship and SMOKING HOT chemistry with Lana is so much stronger, I'm really not feeling it with Lois at all. Which is is ok... because this is another unique "take" on the story.

But I'm sure at some point they will feel compelled to force these characters into their traditional roles and I'm not sure how they will get there from here.

Having to stomach seeing Lana with Lex was difficult in season six, but I can't think of one episode that I didn't want to watch again. There are very few T.V. series I can say that about.

3 out of 5 stars It gets a "meh...".......2007-09-09

Smallville is the only television show that I watch on a regular basis that is still on air. Seeing as that is the case, it would be nice if the episodes and characters were consistent. This is sadly not the case in season 6. While there were some very, VERY good episodes in this season ("Zod," "Justice," and "Promise" ["Promise" actually got me to the point of tears it was so good] being the ones that stick out) the rest of the season was lackluster at best. I loved the episodes featuring the Green Arrow - they brought a much-needed alternate perspective of right and wrong, and were just plain cool (nice outfit, man). Other than those few nice episodes, the rest seemed to be repetitive and similar to the "freak-of-the-week" episodes of the terrible first season. I have to say the most dissapointing aspect of this season was the unbelievable, often sporradic character of Lana Lang. She seemed to change from episode to episode, with no real justice to the Lana I used to love from previous seasons. There was also the introduction of Jimmy Olsen who is played by Aaron Ashmore. The acting on his part wasn't too bad, but it seemed that his relationship with Chloe seemed forced at times, and the fact that he only showed up when the writers were in need of a love triangle situation made him seem like a poorly used plot device rather than a fully developed character. The dialogue often caused groans to erupt in the room (from myself AND friends who watch it with me). The poorly developed plot and horrible guest stars (sorry to say, but let's face it, pro-wrestlers aren't great actors and we have TWO this season...) and the hardly bearable change in characters in this mainly character-driven show made this season one of the worst in my opinion. The good episodes were good enough to keep me watching, but the rest either had me laughing at the ridiculous situations and dialogue or groaning at the repitition of it all. All in all, the good ones were really good, the bad ones were really bad, and it just seems to me that there were more bad ones than there were good ones. I still love Smallville, I just really hope that the next season has a little bit of consistency to it...

"I bought a car. Turned out to be an alien robot. Who knew?" deadpans Sam Witwicky, hero and human heart of Michael Bay's rollicking robot-smackdown fest, Transformers. Witwicky (the sweetly nerdy Shia LaBeouf, channeling a young John Cusack) is the perfect counterpoint to the nearly nonstop exhilarating action. The plot is simple: an alien civil war (the Autobots vs. the evil Decepticons) has spilled onto Earth, and young Sam is caught in the fray by his newly purchased souped-up Camaro. Which has a mind--and identity, as a noble-warrior robot named Bumblebee--of its own. The effects, especially the mind-blowing transformations of the robots into their earthly forms and back again, are stellar.

Fans of the earlier film and TV series will be thrilled at this cutting-edge incarnation, but this version should please all fans of high-adrenaline action. Director Bay gleefully salts the movie with homages to pop-culture touchstones like Raiders of the Lost Ark, King Kong, and the early technothriller WarGames. The actors, though clearly all supporting those kickass robots, are uniformly on-target, including the dashing Josh Duhamel as a U.S. Army sergeant fighting an enemy he never anticipated; Jon Voight, as a tough yet sympathetic Secretary of Defense in over his head; and John Turturro, whose special agent manages to be confidently unctuous, even stripped to his undies. But the film belongs to Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, and the dastardly Megatron--and the wicked stunts they collide in all over the globe. Long live Transformers! --A.T. Hurley

4 out of 5 stars These Robots Knock Your Socks Off.......2007-09-16

I was hesitant to see this movie but the trailer really won me over because of the whole cheesy look to it. Man, was I proven wrong. I thought the movie was a lot of fun-- the nonstop action, the storyline, and the appearance of the coolest robots ever in existence.

The robots, the just Autobots and the power-hungry Decepticons, are given a brief prologue and summary of their ramshackle home planet and the war that's waging between the two sides, but we never actually see anything until the near end of the movie. The human characters also aren't very fleshed-out and there are some of the usual archetypes you find in an action flick: the hero who wants to return to his family because he has a child, the government official who doesn't know the entire truth behind what's going in, the nerd who still lives with his grandma, and the teenage boy who's pining for the pretty girl who doesn't even know he's alive. But since this is a Michael Bay flick and some of these archetypes are in his previous films (Armageddon, anyone?), I think Bay's fans wouldn't really care; Shia LeBeouf, however, gives a pretty decent performance as aforementioned teen who likes the hot chick. If more attention had been focused on the robots, who are the real stars of the show, it would have been a greater movie, but since I had so much fun watching it four times in the theater, I think all can be forgiven. That's what sequels are for anyway, right?

4 out of 5 stars Heads up on the TONS of hd/dvd features on the upcoming release........2007-09-15

As I said this is a heads up of the Hd/dvd features and not a review. I like to know this stuff, so I figure others do. This is the kind of movie that home theater enthusiasts want for sound and picture. This is the information I found on Movieweb, there seemed like a lot of features so I figured I'd pass it along. With the high price of hd perhaps this release might come close to the price they ask.

5 out of 5 stars So much better than I expected!!.......2007-09-15

I'm not a Michael Bay (the director) fan so I didn't expect much out of this film. It turned out great and I've seen it in the theater 5 times! I've only seen one other movie in the theater more than once, Dumb and Dumber, so that says a lot about this film. I grew up with the Transformers so I have just as many complaints as the next nerd. Like Sin City before it, 300 brings Frank Miller and Lynn Varley's graphic novel vividly to life. Gerard Butler (Beowulf and Grendel, The Phantom of the Opera) radiates pure power and charisma as Leonidas, the Grecian king who leads 300 of his fellow Spartans (including David Wenham of The Lord of the Rings, Michael Fassbender, and Andrew Pleavin) into a battle against the overwhelming force of Persian invaders. Their only hope is to neutralize the numerical advantage by confronting the Persians, led by King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), at the narrow strait of Thermopylae.

More engaging than Troy, the tepid and somewhat similar epic of ancient Greece, 300 is also comparable to Sin City in that the actors were shot on green screen, then added to digitally created backgrounds. The effort pays off in a strikingly stylized look and huge, sweeping battle scenes. However, it's not as to-the-letter faithful to Miller's source material as Sin City was. The plot is the same, and many of the book's images are represented just about perfectly. But some extra material has been added, including new villains (who would be considered "bosses" if this were a video game, and it often feels like one) and a political subplot involving new characters and a significantly expanded role for the Queen of Sparta (Lena Headey). While this subplot by director Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead) and his fellow co-writers does break up the violence, most fans would probably dismiss it as filler if it didn't involve the sexy Headey. Other viewers, of course, will be turned off by the waves of spurting blood, flying body parts, and surging testosterone. (The six-pack abs are also relentless, and the movie has more and less nudity--more female, less male--than the graphic novel.) Still, as a representation of Miller's work and as an ancient-themed action flick with a modern edge, 300 delivers. --David Horiuchi

Description

The epic graphic novel by Frank Miller (Sin City) assaults the screen with the blood, thunder and awe of its ferocious visual style faithfully recreated in an intense blend of live-action and CGI animation. Retelling the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, it depicts the titanic clash in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and his massive Persian army. Experience history at swordpoint. And moviemaking with a cutting edge.

Do not expect it to be a documentary about Thermopylae, remember it's Frank Miller we're talking about! The facts are twisted in order to bring the most spectacular story possible. If you like action and epic movies you will not be dissapointed!
Special features include: Additional Scenes, Frank Miller's vision realized on Film, 300 Spartans - Fact or Fiction?, Who were the Spartans (how the actors built their characters based on spartan customs), Webisodes (go on set with the cast and crew) and Commentary by Director Zack Snyder.

5 out of 5 stars Not as good as the hype........2007-09-16

The fight scenes are spectacular. BAR-NONE. Some of the rest was a little to drawn out for me. I know that was kind of the point, but it still was a little boring.

3 out of 5 stars Superb Action, But a Far Cry from the Graphic Novel.......2007-09-15

Long before this film came out, there was Frank Miller's superb graphic novel (still in print, by the way, and well worth the read), and I was a great fan of it. Thus, when I caught wind that a motion picture version was coming out, I was quite excited. Naturally, I expected the film to deviate (as so many comic book films do) from the original source material. While 300 keeps the tone (and the look, by golly!) of the graphic novel, it takes too many liberties with the source material to make it a reverent adaptation.

Taking place in 480 B.C., 300 tells the tale (as retold by Frank Miller) of the battle of Thermopylae, in which a small confederation of Greeks (including 300 Spartans) held off the army of the Persian emperor Xerxes for three days - the largest army of its time. In the end, the Spartans stayed behind at the site and were all slain. Miller's graphic adaptation was an artistic and narrative triumph, creating a great deal of care for the characters and setting the work in a golden, rocky version of the Greek countryside. Much of Miller's artistry is reproduced here - costumes, colors, even individual panel illustrations are featured with loving care and dazzle the eye. Additionally, the fight scenes are brilliant and rival any previously filmed. 300 seems to have been filmed in a manner similar to Sin City, and thus digital wizardry abounds, to good effect.

However, the film delights too much in violence and we find that we have no care whatsoever for the characters. Gerard Butler, who is the spitting image of Miller's rendition of the Spartan king Leonidas, while he cuts an impressive figure, cannot make the dialogue (much of it taken from the graphic novel) poignant and simply spits the lines out through bared teeth. Additionally, a tacked-on and pointless sub-plot with Leonidas' queen, Gorgo, goes nowhere and seems to have been added simply to pad out the time. Overall, a fine action film, but it falls far short of the grandeur of the graphic novel.

4 out of 5 stars Basically a good review, but with some caveats.......2007-09-16

A friend had given me the plain edition of Serenity knowing I loved all things Whedon, so I didn't mind paying for the souped up edition. However, I shouldn't have bothered. Not that the extras aren't fine, but they aren't worth a second purchase if you already have the original. Nonetheless, it's still a remarkable pleasure to watch any version of this film.

5 out of 5 stars Serenity Collector Edition.......2007-09-15

So many things good here:

One of the TRULY great films and hardly anyone even knows about it. My highest recommendation for this edition or the original. For this edition:

1) A package so much better than the original release.

2) Bonus material above and beyond the original release.

Still worth getting if you have the original release - I have MULTIPLE copies of BOTH.

5 out of 5 stars Great new edition of one of the best movies ever........2007-09-14

Anyone who hasn't seen Serenity and Firefly, the TV show that preceeded it, doesn't know what they are missing. Really well developed characters, great dialogue, great story, great acting. Joss Whedon writes some of the best female characters around. No idiodic portrayals of a woman dying of a broken heart and leaving her twin babies motherless like someone in a more famous sci-fi movie. These people could be real and they are all characters that are flawed, but have a lot to be admired for too.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Sci-fi movies to come out in years!!!.......2007-09-14

Whether you have seen Firefly or not, I think there is something anyone can enjoy about Serenity. I actually saw this movie before watching the Firefly series. I was so intrigued by the story I wanted to see more and believe me, I was not disappointed. Firefly is now one of my favorite TV shows of all time with Serenity being on of my favorite movies.

If you have seen Firefly, there probably won't be any need to tell you how good this movie is. I'm sure you will buy it anyway. But if you are a hardcore fan, there are more extras in this collector's edition that I'm sure you won't want to miss.

For those of you who are just looking for a decent science-fiction film, look no further. This movie has great action, humor, and special affects and it truly cares about its characters. Please please please see this movie!!!

5 out of 5 stars Now for the sequel...........2007-09-14

I loved the show and the movie so now watching the deleted scenes and getting the background information (which were amazing, BTW) I just have to say this: "Joss push for a sequel!" I know that this will never happen, but I can dream. Or I can really genie it and hope that the SciFi channel will come to its senses and re-up this show. Ah yes, back to Firefly.

Anyone who even liked the show has to get this version of the movie! It is a must have for any DVD collection. And don't forget to watch it with the commentaries on.

If this five-disc, 20-episode, tenth season set really is the end of Stargate SG-1--and considering the number of reprieves the show has already had and the rumors of various movie spin-offs, not to mention the fact that the final installment is entitled "Unending," who knows?--then the folks responsible for this durable sci-fi series can be proud that they finished it off in style, with a run of episodes that are for the most part highly entertaining, exciting, and fun, offering resolution if not complete closure. And if sharks were jumped, at least they were small ones. As was the case in Season 9, and to a large extent in Season 8 as well, original series star Richard Dean Anderson is little in evidence here. Portraying Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell, Ben Browder, who came to Stargate SG-1 from the underrated Farscape, is now entrenched as leader of SG-1, the Stargate project's ace team in the field, joining series veterans Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, and Michael Shanks (as Samantha Carter, Teal'c, and Daniel Jackson, respectively). Most notably, fellow Farscape alum Claudia Black has an ever-expanding role as Vala, whose cheeky wit and irreverence bring a consistent spark to the proceedings. The big, bad villains known as Ori are back as well. We still can't see them--they are, after all, "ascended beings," represented by the blind, monk-like Priors, who roam the universe intoning "Hallowed are the Ori" and ensuring that all will submit to their will (the element of scary religious fanaticism remains as relevant as ever). But the Ori are also still the most implacable, irresistible force our heroes have ever encountered; nothing less than the fate of the entire galaxy is at stake (again)! And now there's an added twist: the Ori have a frontwoman, if you will, whose powers make the Priors look like pikers. Known as Adria (or "the Orici" to believers), this beautiful young woman (played by Morena Baccarin) also happens to be the daughter of Vala, whom the Ori chose to bring their demon seed into the world; the uneasy (to say the least) Adria-Vala relationship provides many intriguing moments. On the minus side, the show tends to break its own rules (for instance, for a character who's supposed to be invincible, Adria often seems awfully, well, vincible), and the commingling of Arthurian legend, Greek, Roman, and Egyptian myth, magic, and other sources is occasionally over-the-top, even for this franchise. Some episodes are plot-heavy, bogged down by too many characters (past bad guys like the Goa'uld, and Ba'al reappear, as do several Stargate Atlantis principals in one episode) or excessive techno-rap about time dilation fields, flux capacitors, and something called the Clava Thessara Infinitas (don't ask). Episodes in which the writers move away from the central Ori theme are less than stellar; "200" exists mostly as an opportunity to make fun of the TV business and is as irrelevant and silly as "Citizen Joe," the worst episode from Season 8. And finally, without revealing details, suffice to say that "Unending," which offers a possible fate for our heroes before totally pulling its punches, may frustrate some longtime adherents. By and large, though, Stargate SG-1 has all the elements--humor, action, great effects, good story-telling and acting, characters you care about--to more than justify its ten-year run. It will be missed. Special features are again bountiful, including audio commentary on all episodes, various featurettes, and five "directors series" entries devoted to particular episodes. --Sam Graham

Description

The final Season comes to DVD! In season 10, Vala, a former Goa'uld host turned freedom-fighter, joins SG-1 in their battle to defend the galaxy from the holy war of the Ori. Meanwhile, relations between the Jaffa and Earth continue to be strained. It all comes to a sizzling end on the finale.

4 out of 5 stars Final Season 10 Stargate SG-1.......2007-09-17

I thoroughly enjoyed season 10. Lots of great stories, plenty of action and charactor growth. Stargate SG1 should have gone another season as your left with a few loose ends like the Ori threat. I felt they rushed the fate of the Asgard. On the special features they say we have two 2 hour dvds to look forward to.

5 out of 5 stars Good "tee up" for DVD movies to come.......2007-09-15

Outstanding "last" season. It doesn't tie up any loose ends because the series will continue in DVD movie format which is outstanding. I will miss the weekly new adventures but will be first in line to buy each DVD movie that comes out! The last episode "Unending" is truly that. A tear jerker in some respects. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Stargate SG-1 Season 10: good work but not the best.......2007-09-15

(Be warn there are some references to what happens in a couple of episodes.)
The final season of Stargate SG-1 was a good season though I did feel a little let down in the way that the season was done. The final episode of the season was emotional and gave that feeling of what is like to end such a great long running series that is until the upcoming movie in 2008 but I feel like it only added nothing and took out one of the greatest group of characters in the series. Yet I had also had to wonder what was the point of the sixth episode other than to make references to other science fiction shows and make a reference to the long running time of Stargate SG-1. I admit that I was laughing but in the overall story I saw no point of it other than to say that we can do it because this is the last season.
I admit that the reason I bought the tenth season of Stargate to have the entire series though I feel like I could have waited to get the movie to possibly see the final demise of the Ori and its followers which I was expecting to see in the tenth season. Yet the season still has plenty of action and it does answer some questions about the Ancients and Merlin.
If a person could possibly wait I would recommend that a person wait until the price of the season comes down a little more before spending their money of wait until they can buy the season with the upcoming movie in 2008.

5 out of 5 stars Stargate SG1-Season 10.......2007-09-13

1 word...Fantastic!!! I hated to see the series end, but anxiously await the movies to be released.

5 out of 5 stars Final Season of a great Series!.......2007-09-12

Stargate SG-1 was a great and original sci-fi series. The combination of great writing, quality special effects, and an unusually well-balanced cast playing beleivable characters you cared about, made it truely unique. Season Ten did a good job, I think, given the cast and bad guy changes along the way, in concluding the series. In one way, it left you feeling that the end was ready to happen, and in another way, you wanted some more - and it gave one both. Well done!

Still, this turned out fantastic!!

The Ultimate Gift is a tale of one man's tumultuous journey toward personal growth and fulfillment. Surrounded in life, and death, by avaricious family members fueled by a sense of entitlement, billionaire Red Stevens (James Garner) wants to bequeath at least one member of his extended family "the ultimate gift": something he perceives as immensely more valuable than material wealth. Red's arrogant grandson Jason (Drew Fuller) holds a deep-seated hatred for his newly-deceased grandfather, so he's surprised to learn from his grandfather's friend and lawyer Mr. Hamilton (Bill Cobbs) and assistant Miss Hastings (Lee Meriwether) that he's been mentioned in his late grandfather's will. Far from a straightforward gift of cash, land, or stock, Red's bequest comes in the form of a series of mysterious recorded instructions, the first of which requires Jason to hop on a plane for Texas the very next morning without a hint of the trip's purpose or the nature of the gift that awaits him. Dropped into a life of hard physical labor on a ranch in the middle of nowhere, Jason's bad-tempered fury eventually turns to resignation and he finds himself engaged in, and even taking pride in, the first real manual labor he's ever done in his life. Unbeknownst to him, his journey toward claiming the ultimate gift has only just begun. When he returns from Texas, Jason finds his home cleared out, his car confiscated, and instructions to produce one true friend. While Jason is reduced to sleeping in the park, a young child name Emily (Abigail Breslin) and her mother Alexia (Ali Hillis) make his acquaintance and lead him to re-examine his personal prejudices and perceptions of what's truly important in life. Jason's journey of self-discovery continues throughout a series of other trying experiences and, in the end, Grandpa Red's "ultimate gift" of life lessons profoundly and permanently improves the quality of Jason's life. What's more, Jason's new perspective of his place in society has a very positive affect on the larger community. This very powerful film is funny, heartbreaking, and intensely thought-provoking. --Tami Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars warm & fuzzy.......2007-09-16

This is one of those movies that leave you with something positive, and with a warm, fuzzy feeling after watching it. James Garner is doing more of this type of movie. Other movies of his you might also enjoy are "The Notebook" and "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood".

5 out of 5 stars Sweet movie..........2007-09-16

A family movie for everyone. Not only is it entertaining but tries to give a reason for watching the movie. A young man that seems bent on doing nothing that isn't in his best interest comes head to head with his dead grandfather. Through a series of "gifts" he learns to care about other things than himself. Funny with just the right amount of drama.

5 out of 5 stars A movie for all ages........2007-09-15

The Ultimate Gift is a wonderful movie. How refreshing, to watch a movie which is not only entertaining, but is appropriate for people of all ages to watch. There's a good lesson to be learned here. I dare anyone to watch The Ultimate Gift without getting teary eyed one minute and bursting out in laughter the next.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible Gladiator Ripoff.......2007-09-17

First this movie is so long and boring, I almost turned it off twice! It focuses more on the slow motion kill scenes and the back drops than the acting or story line, which is weak anyway. This movie tries so hard to be another Gladiator! Even down to the wife and child in the wheat field at the end of the movie! Totally inaccurate historically and downright dumb. Only a few would enjoy this type of movie. Honestly this movie just sucked. Very disappointed in the acting and the story. Only one star. Avoid! Don't even rent it!

4 out of 5 stars Great action film........2007-09-16

I can see some blockbuster films going to be released in spring, and yes, they get a DVD release in the summer, when school is out. Maybe it's because the filmmakers didn't really care about releasing it on DVD in December, or they may have enough money to avoid that kind of stuff. Or maybe, the filmmakers want an action film for everyone to watch on DVD during the summer in order for it to be more entertaining.

"300" has lived up to the hype as much as summer blockbuster films go. This talks about the Spartans, the Persian Empire, and a totalitarian country. When this movie came out in theaters at the time, I was learning all about Sparta. I'm not yet capable in seeing R-rated films at the movies, but watching "300" was really interesting when I saw it on Movies OnDemand.

I have to admit that "300" was a bit much like last spring's release, "V For Vendetta." They both talk about totalitarian governments, have plenty of action sequences for a Global History movie. And yes, they're both rated R. I also can consider "300" to be like "Sin City," which also is a pretty cool movie. For that hype, I enjoyed "300" as much as I enjoyed "V For Vendetta."

In "300," King Lenoadis (Gerard Butler) faces against many of the 300 Spartans in order to fight for freedom and peace. The 300 Spartan warriors want to fight against the million-strong Persian army on an eve of an invasion. It is based on a true story, but it's also a comic book movie. It's highly intense for a true story to be turned into a comic book movie, so you'll be entertained with the story.

I also have to admit that "300" is much like a superhero movie. Not a superhero movie like "Spider-Man," more like "Sin City" and "V For Vendetta." With Zack Snyder, the director of the "Dawn of the Dead" remake. He utterly fits well into directing an action film like this. The story is much better than bizarre movies that are made by Robert Rodriguiz or Queen Taratino.

The cast is filled with unknown names, who I hear are B-listers. But Gerard Butler was easily one of the bests in the market. He makes an excellent Lenoadis. Lena Heady is really good as the Queen, and some of the other actors definitely fit for the Spartans for this movie. Director Zack Snyder, director of the "Dawn of the Dead" remake, takes a good look into making the film, and that's what totally puts him onto the right track.

"300" has lots of action. It's very bloody, and I'm nowadays mature for bloody violence. But if you like bloody violence, you should fit for this movie. However, if you are not into this type of bloody violence with heads chopped off and too much bloody sword fights, this isn't the right thing for you. It's pretty entertaining, but the bloody violence wouldn't be seen from my eyes too many times. However, it does fit well for a 2 hour movie, and has a great story with all the action and bloody sequences.

Overall, "300" is the definite version for an epic movie. If you want to see a really good epic movie, you should then enjoy "300." It will definitely work for you, so you should see it. It's got plenty of action and a whole lot of fight sequences that will keep you entertained for 2 hours.

5 out of 5 stars The movie 300.......2007-09-13

Stirring epic which brings to gut-level view the heroic resistance
of 300 Spartans against the Persian hordes, led by colorful Xerxes
himself. The comraderie, discipline, fighting skills, etc. exhibited
are truly wonderful; so too is the background story: the festival
days preventing the sending of the entire Spartan army; the pain
of Leonidas' wife as she acknowledges her soon-to-be widowhood.
The special effects too are extraordinary and must be seen to
be believed. I could go on. Just watch the movie!!

2 out of 5 stars Another misrepresentation of history?.......2007-09-13

I really thought I would like this but sadly did not.If it was not a film about something that suppose to of happened it might of been better, say a film of fantasy? No it was still flat.No character development,I did not have any feeling toward anyone in the film.Truth turned into myth, yes.I have to disagree with another reviewer,in that I liked Braveheart a lot better. At least it brought out my emotions more. This would make a good video game, that is about it.Maybe I just wasn"t in the right mood at the time?Heck-I liked King Arthur with Clive Owen better than this. This is only my opinion.

3 out of 5 stars Good Story, Horrible Visuals.......2007-09-11

"300" tells the amazing story of how an informal Spartan army of only 300 men held off the massive Persian military force until they were betrayed and decimated by King Xerxes. The story was incredible, and told very well. Several of the battle sequences really whet the appetite of the armchair war tactical strategist. But the flat, fake, chrome-like colors of the film (which make this almost look like a comic book), really take away from the experience. The slow-motion photography also detracts from the credibility of the film - I can only guess that this technique was used to simulate a 3D effect, which it accomplished to a certain degree, but not enough to make this movie visually appealing. Also, the "look" they chose for King Xerxes was awful! From the research I've done on this individual, I don't believe the costume to be historical - perhaps this was just another of the filmmaker's surreal visuals for shock value?

Description

Times change. Dangers remain. 10 years after he became President of the Interstellar Alliance, Sheridan prepares for a fateful Babylon 5 reunion that could prevent Earth's impending doom...if he will also compromise his core principles. Meanwhile, commander Lochley confronts an unexpected interloper on the way station - a being whose presence makes the B5 freeport the crossroads between heaven and hell. In Voices in the Dark, Series creator J. Michael Straczynski reunites with stars Bruce Boxleitner and Tracy Scoggins in two richly imagined stories set after the events of the original series. Richly imagined, too, is Straczynski's vision of the 23rd century (including a dazzling New York City) - a vision made more spectacular via filmmaking technology unavailable during the original series.

Great to see some fresh stories from this underated science fiction series. And pleasantly surprised to see the original actors back.
Excellent SGI, high quality production. Only complaint would loved to have seen longer stories and more of the original cast.
